Nagle College Sensory Garden The Sensory Garden, which has been under construction at Nagle College Mahon over the past month was completed this week with the help of 15 volunteers from Novartis which is a major sponsor of the garden, together with staff and pupils. The garden is part of the on-going progression of the ASD programme and is designed to encourage interactivity among the students, of all five senses. The garden will provide students with a number of benefits including development of life skills, as each pupil will gain a great deal of plant knowledge while also learning how to maintain the garden over the school year. The sensory benefits of the garden mean that students have a beautiful area for time out, reflection and discussion which can help with emotional well-being. Well known Douglas man Paul Finglas of Second Nature Garden Services carried out all works in relation to planting and design of the garden.

CBC Students Attempt Climb Into Guinness Book of Records Twelve CBC students with their teacher Mr. James Deane, will attempt to climb Mount. Kilijamaro this coming August to raise funds and awareness for two Irish charities - Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital Crumlin and Adi Roche’s Chernobyl Children’s Project. The climb is taking place from 23/08/2012 to 02/09/2012, while the team is also attempting to make it into the Guinness Book of Records with the most people on the summit at the one time. The group will be travelling with an organisation called Kilimanjaro Achievers and further information can be found on their website http://www.kilimanjaroachievers.com Training for this event is ongoing with the team having already conquered The Galtees and Carrantuohill. James Bryant and Corey Cashman from Douglas are two of the students on the team.

Ashton to get new school Congratulations to Ashton School, Blackrock Road on the official launch of building work in relation to their new ‘state of the art’ school which takes place on Thursday morning May 3rd, at 10.00 am . This announcement at a time of extreme austerity in terms of the general economic climate, has created great excitement and enthusiasm for students and staff.

Dana Forbes R.I.P

It was with a sad heart we learned last week of the unexpected death of composer and music teacher Dana Forbes. Dana who originated from Pennsylvania USA came to live in Cork a few years ago. She was for a considerable amount of time involved in the musical production group the I.O.R.C, based in the old Butter Exchange Building in the shadow of the Bells of Shandon., and made a major contribution to many of their shows in the Cork Opera House. Dana who lived in Bracken Court, Douglas, went on to found The Douglas School of Music. Throughout the years many young musicians got to enjoy studying and learning music with her. They learned to appreciate her musianship, her honesty, integrity and her positive spirit. To Dana her students were more than just colleagues; they were the people she enjoyed seeing and working with every day. Dana was an amazing director and leader and every student felt they were lucky to have learned from her. She has left them with many inspiring footprints on their memories. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends and especially by her many pupils. May she rest in peace.

The Minor Sports Grants Scheme (under E.5000) will allow for minor capital grants towards enhancement of premises, pitches etc., as well as allowing for the purchase of non personal sports equipment that will be used for at least five years. The Major Sports Grants Scheme (over E.5,000) will allow for capital grants to develop sport and active recreation facilities throughout the city. Seen, Read + Heard by Michael O’Hanlon The headline on a Sunday newspaper said it all “F.G Pledges to ‘Put the Frighteners” on the Electorate”. Unless I’m mistaken Big Phil Hogan tried that a few months ago. The Electorate are not children! We can’t be cowed, threatened and frightened. We are adults who will make up our own minds on any issue that concerns our present and out future. Phil Hogan was replaced by Junior Minister Fergus O’Dowd who was gentle and friendly, almost having a tear in his eye. You know the scene from the gangster movies “Good Cop Bad Cop”. The old people have a saying “A spoonful of honey is better than a barrel of malt” Speaking of old people the HSE is attempting to close the Abbeyleix Community Nursing Home. The HSE used the word “Unit” instead of “Home” to justify their plans which include; ‘Lack of Funding’ ‘Staffing Problems’ and it foresees problems in meeting HICRA standards. To these elderly residents this is there home where they have built friendships with fellow residents, nurses and carers. It’s at this stage in there lives that the home (not Unit) they now live in will be their last home. Resident Mary McCarthy aged 89 says “It’s like home to me, I’m not going out of here except when they carry me out in a box”. Ned O’Keeffe is in a bit of bother regarding a mobile phone invoice. Did you know that T.D’s are entitled to 729 Euro every 18 months for a new mobile phone and assuming that the government runs the full term, a T.D. can claim 2,754 Euro for a phone. Yet I have a Tesco Mobile which cost me under 20 Euro a few years ago. If I was a TD I would have to ask myself “Would I spend 729 Euro on a mobile phone if it was from my own pocket ?” 166 TD’s get allowance for their phones over 5 years at a total cost = 457169 Euro, and they plan to scrap the ambulance service in West Cork! In Ned’s case a file is being sent to the DDP. The papers tell us that if found guilt Ned could face 10 years in jail! And pigs will fly – probably from Ned’s Pig Farm !!! Dr James Reilly Minister for Health wants to ban smoking on Beaches. A few years ago they introduced a law to muzzle Rottweillers, Dobermans, German Shepard’s, Bulldogs, Pitbulls etc. Ops I almost forgot Rhodesian Ridgebacks. It’s been a great success hasn’t it? Approval to replace prefabs in schools Cork South Central Fine Gael Deputy, Jerry Buttimer, has welcomed the announcement that prefabs in three schools will be replaced with permanent classroom accommodation. “I am pleased that the Minister for Education and Skills has confirmed that three schools in Cork South Central have received approval to replace prefabs with permanent classrooms. Glasheen Boys National School and in Carrigaline both Scoil Mhuire Lourdes and St. John’s Girls National School have received approval. “Scoil Mhuire Lourdes has been approved for four mainstream classrooms. St. John’s GNS will now be able to build 4 mainstream classrooms and 2 resource/learning support classrooms. Glasheen Boys National School will receive funding for 2 mainstream classrooms and one resource/learning support classroom. “The approved funding should ensure that permanent classrooms are built in the three schools by the end of 2012. The new classrooms will improve the facilities available for pupils and teachers, ending the long-term reliance on prefabs. “For too long the temporary accommodation solution of prefabs had been relied on to provide a long term solution for a shortage of classrooms. This initiative by the Minister will end that wasteful use of resources delivering classrooms that meet the current needs of pupils, schools and teachers. “The Minister has approved 78 schools across the country to go ahead with the replacement of prefabs with permanent classrooms, allowing them to begin this work to ensure it is completed during 2012. In total this announcement amounts to an investment of €14 million for prefab replacement in these schools. “In early March the Minister announced a €35 million initiative to reduce the use of prefabs in primary schools. 189 schools were invited to participate in the programme, in addition to the 78 schools which have today received approval another 110 are in on-going discussions with the Department.”

Patrick O’Halloran is a full time college professor at New York City College of Technology. He teaches accounting, marketing and research seminar in the hospitality department. Originally from Kilkishen Village in County Clare he has been in New York City since 1987. and lives in Cold Spring with his wife Tricia and their five year old son, Eamonn. Patrick’s poetry touches on the fleeting nature of human life, its beauty and impermanence. The compressed texture of his words conceals an exuberance for life that triumphs over its nature.

Active Retired The Carrigaline Active Retirement Association holds the annual

Bealtaine afternoon concert in the Carrigaline Library this Thursday May 3rd. A number of popular local musicians will perform and entertain during the course of the afternoon from 2.30 pm. All are welcome. Last Thursday 26th members of CARA travelled to Cobh where they visited the Titanic Experience and the Cobh Cathedral. Some called to the Cobh Heritage Centre. Men’s Shed Progress on the cleaning, painting and refurbishment of the Carrigaline Men’s Shed is continuing slowly but surely. Work on the kitchen cum dining room is now complete and up and running. It is fitted out with a refrigerator, cooker, kettle, table and chairs and all the necessary kitchen utensils. The reception area where members can sit, chat and relax, read the paper, or listen to the radio is nearly finished. On the outside some storm water drainage work is being carried out while a ramp to facilitate wheelchair access is being constructed. Interested men over 18 years of age are welcome to join; the Shed will be open at present every Tuesday and Wednesday from 11.00 am to 1.00pm. Douglas Library Bealtaine Exhibition In the Wild : Pastels and Prints by local artist Gemma Best Friday 4thPaddy O Gorman will present his favourite choice of music at our monthly Gramophone Recital at 11.00p.m. On Friday 11 May we welcome the local Douglas I.C.A. Choir to sing in the library. They have a wide repertoire with Irish ballads and music from the shows, best of all they encourage everyone to sing along so it’s a great way to start the weekend. After the performance the ICA will also give a demonstration of Planting Flower Boxes so all gardeners are welcome to come along as well. On Saturday 19 May the Western Front Association will host a full day for any member of the public interested in the First World War. I see from Phil’s Young at Heart update of last week that this group are now available to make visits to people who would like someone to call to have a chat. They will be HSE approved and garda-vetted. So if interested in becoming a volunteer, please contact phil at 087-2987161.

This service provides approx. 30 dinners every day and has 66 volunteers, drivers and cooks, who support the service. They are always looking for new volunteers. If you could spare some time, please contact 4362289.

Helen Maher, our area rep. for Courtbrack, Donnybrook, who is a member of Tidy Towns and a member of the Executive Committee as an area representative, recently organised a clean-up of her area in Courtbrack, with the assistance of members of Tidy Towns. Date for your Diary! Tidy Towns Concert on Friday May 25th at Rochestown Park Hotel Tidy Towns are in dire need of funds this year for plants and shrubs to spruce up Douglas in readiness for the Annual Tidy Towns competition. With severe financial cutbacks at Cork Co. Co., they must do all the fund-raising themselves, and one of their members, Marian O’Sullivan, is organising a musical evening at Rochestown Park Hotel, on Friday May 25th. The entry fee is €10, and it promises to be a great night, a mix of a variety of individual and group performances, inc. Douglas Church Choir, and sing-a-long with the audience who will be given song sheets. Marian’s husband, David, is a well known pianist and will be performing throughout the evening. Marian will give more specific details in next week’s Post especially as to how and where to get the tickets, but keep May 25th in your diaries as it is going to be a very popular event.

Hall Rental Remember our Community Hall is available at the moment on most week nights, it caters for 90-95 people seated, and there is ample parking of 46 car spaces in our car park, so anybody interested in renting it out, please see contact details below.

Spring is also a time for de-cluttering our home and we would like to remind people that there is a Bring Recycling Centre just inside the main Church Road entrance of the Community Park, which provides recycling for glass and cans.

We are drawing up a list of volunteers who can help us out in our fundraising efforts and would be delighted if anyone with a particular talent or idea could give of their time. Lactose intolerance Lactose intolerance, also called lactase deficiency, means you aren’t able to fully digest the milk sugar (lactose) in dairy products. It’s usually not dangerous, but symptoms of lactose intolerance can be uncomfortable. The problem behind lactose intolerance is a deficiency of lactase — an enzyme produced by the lining of your small intestine. Many people have low levels of lactase, but most don’t experience signs and symptoms.

Traditionally ,old age has been associated with retirement ,illness and dependency .Today most people remain independent into very old age, the majority of people over 65 are well and live healthy active lives in independence in their own homes and communities as long as possible some with the support of family and friends, older people’s lives are changing and as they age the type of information they require change also, this challenge becomes more difficult for people who may be experiencing declining health and need assistance to cope with their problems, many people find it difficult to fill out forms, also been left on hold on the phone for long periods, there are unnecessary difficulties caused to older people when information is not available,we need an information office in the community helping people to access info more easily. As anyone will know who has attended the A&E in CUH you need to be prepared to wait at least 7—8 hours before you are seen, many people have been in touch to say there is also a urgent care centre in the Orthopaedic, the Mercy care centre is open from 8--6 seven days a week and treats broken bones, all sprains and strains, facial injuries, minor burns and scalds, bites cuts, splinters, minor chest pains,etc . The Mercy Centre does not treat children under 10 years old, chest pain, hip fractures. I have got very good reports from people who had reason to go there, full of praise for the staff and the centre and most important no long delays, the number is 4926900 write it down and hopefully you will never need it , The month of May often called “Our Lady’s Month “ is traditionally dedicated to our Lady and is considered the season of the beginning of new life. Cork Slang on Radio Life 93.1FM invites you to join them for “watchamacallit” a complete cork audio dictionary. It is widely accepted that cork has a varied and sometimes colourful vocabulary that is often misunderstood and sends many visitors into confusion, so with each 5 minute episode of watchamacallit Lifefm will take an in depth look in to cork slang words and phrases as well as giving a definition of those words

so that others can come to understand cork people and their slang better. In the programme you will become familiar with such words as bazzer, feen, gat, dodgy to phrases such as story boy, and what’s the craic. With watchamacallit you will also become versed in how to explain things to cork people in their slang such being able to say that you will see them later and ask how to get to Patrick street.

You will hear examples from cork locals young and old as they guide you through watchmacallit’s slang terms. Austerity Leads to Suicide Rate Increase Friday’s Vancouver Sun had a short item, “Suicides up, road deaths down due to recession.”

Many economists, including Nobel Prize winner Paul Krugman, argue that savage cuts to these countries will only make their economies worse, and inflict more pain on their populations.

If one were to extrapolate from this data, one could hypothesize that as more harsh “austerity” measures – including pay cuts and fewer public services in addition to even higher unemployment – are imposed on the Greek people that the suicide rate will grow even higher. One might further speculate that, if such severe punishment is also imposed on Spain, Portugal, and

The Comedy Club at the City Limits will play host to Andrew Maxwell this Saturday. Doors are at 9pm and tickets are €20 with entry to club afterwards. Andrew performed his show The Lights Are On at the 2011 Edinburgh Fringe and was nominated for an Edinburgh Comedy Award for Best Comedy Show for the second time. The show was a sell-out and had fantastic reviews where the show was particularly praised for its pin-sharp and up-to-date material about the Arab Spring and the London riots. Andrew recorded an episode of Sky Atlantic’s eagerly awaited first original comedy series, Morgan Spurlocks New Britannia in January 2012 alongside Shappi Khorsandi and Ruby Wax which aired in April. Andrew also had a four part Radio 4 series commissioned in early 2012 – Andrew Maxwell Public Enemies with producer Sam Bryant. Last September, he presented an authored documentary for BBC3, Conspiracy Coach Trip: 9/11 (with Renegade Pictures) which aired around the 10 year anniversary of the events. In 2011, Andrew recorded his first appearance on BBC One’s legendary comedy show Live At The Apollo which aired on Friday 9th December and was one of the highest rated shows of the series. The bridge is only single track and every morning McLeod the postman drives his van at breakneck speed over the bridge and onto the island. However, every morning the local milkman drives his van at similar speed across the bridge as he leaves the island. Neither could ever bring himself to give way, so why is there never an accident ?

The Omagh bomb was the worst massacre in Northern Ireland’s recent history. On Saturday, 15th August 1998, a massive bomb exploded in the Lower Market Street, Omagh. Thirty one people, including unborn twins were killed and hundreds more were injured. Many local people and visitors from far and near had come to Omagh to shop and enjoy the carnival procession in the town. At ten minutes past three the sound of devastation, mayhem and despair fell on the

county town of Tyrone. Subsequent to the horrible tragedy a Peace Garden called the Garden of Light with a memorial sculpture was erected in the exact location of where the bomb exploded. Also installed was a stained glass window, called Windows of Hope, in the local Omagh Library.

Straight Ahead provides free surgery for Irish children who need urgent operations for severe orthopeadic deformities such as scoliosis, developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) and neuromuscular limb deformity and are currently on unacceptable waiting lists. For some of these the waiting leads to a deterioration of their condition, considerable pain and a huge reduction in their quality of life. Straight Ahead wants to do something about this and are looking to complete 10 such free operations in the next year. Straight Ahead has a fantastic team of surgeons, nurses and other medical staff at Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin waiting to complete these surgeries, many of them providing their time for free. In addition a number of Irish medical device companies have generously provided free surgical implants to ensure that these surgeries

are completed for the lowest possible cost. Normally these 10 operations would cost about €500,000 but Straight Ahead has reduced this cost to €150,000. We have already started doing these life changing operations (see the “before and after X-Rays” on this page from our first operation) but we need your help to reach our target. By giving a donation you can help us reach our goal to change the lives of at least 10 Irish children in the next 12 months.

Ballinlough Community News With Mary Cremin Ballinlough Community Association A.G.M. The A.G.M. was held on Tuesday 24th April at the Community Centre. Among the attendance were Lord Mayor of Cork Cllr.Terry Shannon, Cllr. Laura McGonigle (Chairperson of Ballinlough Community Association) Cllrs. Jim Corr, Des Cahill, Kieran McCarthy & Denis O’Flynn. The Chairperson addressed the meeting, she spoke in praise of the voluntary work done in the community, she thanked her fellow officers, said that Ballinlough was a vibrant Community Centre, and wished it well for the next twelve months. The Secretary’s report was read by Lil Downey. Reports: Meals on Wheels - 220 meals were delivered a week last year, this is all thanks to the cooks who turn up on their rota to cook and likewise to the drivers that deliver them. A recruitment drive drive took place during the year, some new drivers and helpers were recruitment. As the holiday period is approaching, they will be appealing for volunteers, it is one day in the fortnight for a few hours in the morning, if you have recently retired, you might like to help. Call to the Community Centre any morning between 10.30 am to 11.30am. Youth Clubs - It was another a very successful year for them. Membership is very high in the Youth Clubs. The End of Summer Festival was a great success with over 1,300 attending. this year, the Spook Parade for Halloween, the Christmas Soirée was a sell out. Several group use the Youth Centre. The building got a lot of work done this year including a new heating system. I.C.A.: The I.C.A. meet the first and third Wednesday of every month. New members are welcome. Their AGM is on Wednesday 2nd May. Indoor Bowls - They play on Mon & Tues nights at the Community Centre. membership has increased his year. New members are always welcome. 45 Drive - Every Thursday night at 9.00pm, Everyone welcome Other activities include: Ladies & Gents retirement Clubs, Bingo, Computer classes. Lord Mayor Cllr. Terry Shannon addresses the meeting, he said he was delighted to be present as Lord Mayor, he is a member of the Community Association, where he holds the position of an officership.

He praised and congratulations all the people involved in the association, and stressed that everyone involved are voluntary workers. As Lord Mayor he has visited almost every group and area in the city, he said we should be proud of our city, as Cork is one of the Top 10 cities. He also said that we should look at all the positive aspects in our city.

Each of the local councillors spoke on local issues in the area, and said that Ballinlough should be proud of its Community Association. Garda Ger Harrington of Blackrock Garda Station said that Ballinlough is a ‘Model’ as it is a quiet locality. There is sight traffic congestion in some areas. There is a great improvement in the area known as the ‘Japanese gardens’ as it is constantly patrolled by the Gardai. Douglas Swimming Pool: The pool has been refurbished, it also has extended public opening hours Saturdays 1.00pm - 4.00pm The lack of larger Playground in the area was discussed, it was suggested that Ballinlough needs a new Playground which should be closed at night. It was great to see some new faces at the AGM., so hopefully new people will bring new ideas to our community.

Paddy Kearney Memorial Trophy The final of the Paddy Kearney Memorial Trophy was played in the Community Centre last Wednesday 25th April. The competition was sponsered by Lord Mayor of Cork Cllr. Terry Shannon. The Lord Mayor said he was privilged to be here, he praised and honoured the years of work that the late Paddy Kearney did in the community, Mrs Anne Kearney was also present. The Lord Mayor presented the trophies to the winning team of Mossie McGrath, Frank O’Flynn and Jack Healy. Runners up were Liam O’Flynn, Frank Cronin and Denis Murphy. The Trophies for the event were sponsored by Cllr. Terry Shannon in association with Gerard McCarthy Awards & Gifts. The orgainsing committee of Ena Collins, Maura Maher, Maura Olden, Marian Quinn, Michael J. Collins and Liam Towler would like to say a special word of thanks to Vincent Barry and Michael J. With summer at our doorsteps, we’ll try to give you a few ideas on what might need doing in your garden this week. Not everything in this article may apply to your garden - but there might be something, if not this week maybe next week.

Continue sowings salad crops and peas regularly.

Flower Garden Start bedding out the hardiest summer plants such as pansies and Antirrhinums. Prune Clematis montana and other spring varieties to size if necessary. Sow wallflowers, bell is daisies, polyanthus and other spring4lowering biennials. Sow hardy perennials such as aquilegias, hollyhocks, lupins in a nursery bed outdoors. Transfer Indian azaleas outdoors, plunging their pots to the rim in the ground in a lightly shaded place. Dress spring bulbs after flowering with general fertiliser or water with a liquid feed. Cut oft any shoots growing below the heads of standard roses. Finish planting all border perennials before it is too warm and dry.

Everton broke dangerously once after 10 minutes but a superb save from Alan Kelleher kept the shot out. Despite all the possession Corinthians had to wait until 5 minutes before half time to open the scoring. A Mark Cronin corner was sent into the net by a fine header from Jaze Kabia. The second half started with Corinthians again playing great passing football . Adam Gilbride played a great ball to Rory Doyle who finished superbly to the net. Daniel O Donovan shot was deflected to Rory Doyle who beat one man before shooting past the keeper. A good ball from Cian Morgan to Mark Cronin at the edge of the box was sent to the roof of the net. The fifth goal was an OG from the defender under pressure. The sixth goal was a fine finish from Adam Gilbride following a great through ball from Mark Cronin. FOCUS By Pat Harrington I.I.B.A. Short Mat Bowls Snippets from the local Results and Fixtures (Cork Zone) by Michael J.O’Shaughnessy and National Scene Happy Campers The Cork hurling management will have been well pleased at getting another competitive game tucked safely under their belt. Did they worry about the winning or losing? Winning means another game with Kilkenny in the league final. Winning also means that the “auld enemy” Tipp have been overcome once again – though the championship may be a different kettle of fish. The Rebels have had a good league; they surely will not be lacking confidence for the championship. What of Tipp? On the day their touch would at times been frowned upon at junior B level. They also over-played the short passing game. After the 45th minute the Premier County had a brief ten minute golden period where they won a lot of ball in the air, and played more to their previous high standards. The game as a spectacle was dreadful for 45 minutes but it certainly picked up after that. One wonders if both sides were playing mind games. No doubt Cork will be more pleased with the outing. Both sides were short some players on the day. Tipperary will have an extra championship game played should they overcome Limerick – this would be an advantage Kilkenny had their expected victory over Clare without being over-extended. The Cats are short established players through injury at the moment. They will still put up a big challenge to Cork. The last time the sides met in a semi-final was in 2002 – with victory going to The Cats. The Cork dispute occurred later that year. Galway vs. Dublin Galway defeated Dublin in the replayed relegation encounter. On the day the Tribesmen were clearly the sharper of the two. They also made some positional changes. Dublin had two players on suspension as

well as a number of players out through injury. It is said that winning becomes a habit, but Dublin are struggling with two draws and five losses in the league, though it must be said that they were competitive in most games. The burning question is will those long-term injured be up to the pace of the game. The Liffeysiders may not have wanted to win the league but they would have been confident of maintaining their status in the higher grade. Paul Galvin On Setanta recently Paul Galvin was asked about his role in the Kerry team where he is spending a lot of time gathering possession in his own half. Pat Spillane in the Sunday Independent said that Galvan had been in possession on 32 occasions against Mayo. He referred to the legendary Kerryman as a great player who is not creative in the manner of some of the great European footballers. This comment was merely to stress the fact that as Galvin is not a very creative player why give him the ball so often? Referring to the younger players, (minor and under 21) in Kerry Spillane made a further comment saying that these lads were not bulked up enough; a comment with which Paul Galvin agreed. My comment is that these lads are only youngsters. Does Spillane maintain that the G.A.A. should be creating rugby-like players at such a young age? My take on the subject is that there should be a slowdown of this bulking of players so young. Dónal Óg Final may I wish Dónal Óg Cusack a speedy recovery. I may not always agree with the man’s politics but he is a wonderful keeper. Congrats Congratulations to Douglas men Eoin Cadogan and Eoin Cotter on winning National League medals with the Cork footballers last Sunday.

Monday saw the last morning of Coaching for the boys school which was a great success our thanks to Steven Enneguess the National Coach for a job well done.
