Douglas Land Use and Transportation Study - Update Cork County Council is continuing to work on the preparation of the Douglas Land Use and Transportation Study ( DLUTS ). This is a significant study for the broader Douglas area which will set the overall framework for the future development of the area. The study has a completion date at the end of this year and members of the public will have a number of opportunities to make their views known throughout the process. The first round of public consultation was concluded on May 11th, however, a further period of consultation is scheduled to commence on July 10th. This second round of consultation in July will be much more meaningful for members of the public as there will be more information available at that stage in the process. A third and final round of consultation will carried out at a later stage during the year to conclude the plan. There have been many plans and studies carried out in the Douglas area over the years, but unfortuanately, implementation of these resulting in real benefits to the community has been seriously lacking. The challenge for everyone involved in this process is to ensure that a credible and realistic plan is devised which can be delivered over time, resulting in a better living and working environment for everyone. I will update you as this study progresses and if anyone would like to discuss this in further detail with me, please do not hesitate to contact me.

The Old Ball and Chain: Tammy Lee Hinton’s fourth wedding may be her most memorable: after the ceremony in Leoni Township, Mich., the 53-year-old bride was arrested on a two-year-old felony warrant; she allegedly stole her son’s identity to obtain utility services and a credit card. Officers allowed Hinton to pose for her wedding photos, and she then declined to change out of her dress and veil for her booking. “She was not in jail for more than 15 minutes, maybe a half hour,” a police spokesman said. “She was able to bond right out” so her new husband could pick her up for their reception. But when Hinton didn’t show up for a court hearing the next business day as promised, the judge issued another warrant. Officers arrested her again, and now she is being held on $100,000 bond....She did, however, have to lift her veil for the mug shot.

Cllr. Seamus McGrath “If I can assist you with any issue, please do not hesitate to contact me.”

Seen, Read + Heard by Michael O’Hanlon Last Friday night week, I called down to the Rochestown Park Hotel to take a few pics of some old friends attending the Douglas Tidy Towns fundraising Concert night. Not only did I get some great pics, but I stayed for the whole Concert and what a fabulous night was had by all - great music, singers, choirs and not forgetting the M.C. Sean O’Shea. I feel, and hope, that this will be an annual event because everybody had a great night. The following morning, Saturday, I met an old friend Maurice Lynch from Carrigaline, and over a coffee, he spoke to me about the Famine grave site on Carr’s Hill. He told me that as a child his grandmother told him of seeing the horse and butt taking the bodies from St. Finbarr’s Workhouse up the hill to their final resting place. This was when his grandmother was a child. Maurice was up there recently and told me that it needed some work and he offered to help in any way to clean up the area. I promised Maurice I’d look into it and get back to him that afternoon. I rang local Councillor, and eminent historian, Kieran McCarthy and we agreed to check out the Famine grave site on Tuesday afternoon. On Sunday morning I met a neighbour who told me that there was a burnt out car in the Community Park, so I went down with my camera, and sure enough the burnt out car was there and from the condition of the area it had been there for some time. On a related matter, sometimes we assume that the other person will telephone either the Gardai or the Council and at the end of the day nobody does. I walked around the beautiful park and was saddened by the litter cans, vodka bottles. I looked over the wall into St. Luke’s Graveyard, and saw empty beer cans thrown on the graves; terrible desecration and yet this will continue and probably get worse unless we follow the philosophy of one time police chief Bill Bratton who introduced the term ‘broken window syndrome’, which is when a window in an empty building is broken, fix it that day, otherwise more windows will be broken, and eventually the building will become derelict. Then the culprits will move onto the building next door. I remember Minister for Justice John O’Donoghue promising us “zero tolerance”. God help us!!

• Paupers Grave Cross on Carrs Hill

Finally on this matter, the Park could do with a Park Warden, but austerity will probably dictate otherwise and political historians will agree that austerity has never worked and never will. Doom and gloom will follow and Phil Hogan is back on the road again!! Now that I’m on a rant, every week Richard Bruton tells us that there are 20 jobs confirmed for a Call Centre or Google, online betting etc, but the people who built Ireland during the last 12 years are forgotten people, the sub contractors who employed thousands of people who then spent millions on breakfast rolls, petrol, diesel, vans, plant hire etc. Then at the end of the Tiger’s life, a lot of them were caught by the developers who still sail the world on their yachts, live and play golf in Portugal, or get paid €200,000 a year by NAMA to help them with their books. To the victors go the Spoils, to the victims go the Court Judgements. Anyway, on Tuesday Kieran McCarthy and I took a spin up to the Paupers’ Grave in Carr’s Hill. Kieran is a mine of information. He told me that there are thousands of poor men, women and children buried there. This sacred, sad and hallowed ground needs to be cherished, respected, given dignity. It’s a historically sensitive area which needs TLC, and surely if our politicians cannot do much for the living, a grass cutting and clean up is not a lot to expect for our dead. They deserve it and we owe it to our forgotten people. Until next time if the Good Lord’s willing and the creeks don’t rise.

Michael O’Hanlon.

Know Your Rights B: Living with your landlord Question: I am about to rent a room in an apartment and I will be living with my landlord. What do I need to know?

You are not protected by equality legislation which prohibits discrimination on 9 grounds, including age, sex, religion, race and disability

Answer: As you are living in your landlord’s home, you do not have a standard tenancy agreement. Instead, you have a ‘Licensee Agreement’ with your landlord (this also applies if you are living with the spouse, child or parent of a landlord and you do not have a tenancy agreement or written lease). This means you are in the property by the landlord’s consent or invitation and you are not protected under the Residential Tenancies Act 2004. Your landlord is not obliged to register with the Private Residential Tenancies Board (PRTB) and you cannot use the dispute resolution service of the PRTB if a disagreement arises between you and your landlord. You should also be aware of the following:

If you are sharing accommodation with your landlord and are unhappy with the way you are being treated, you could try discussing the situation with him and attempt to resolve any issues between you. If this is not possible you may be able to take your case to the Small Claims Court. This is really the only legal recourse you have as a tenant sharing accommodation with your landlord.

Your landlord is not obliged to provide you with a rent book or a statement of rent paid Your accommodation does not have to meet any minimum physical standards Any notice you may get of the termination of the tenancy is at your landlord’s discretion (although they are obliged to give reasonable notice, the specifics of this notice may vary)

Cork pilot programme shows need for out-ofhours social work services Cork South Central Fine Gael TD Jerry Buttimer has said that a Cork pilot programme shows need for out-of-hours social work services. “The HSE started an out-of-hours social work services pilot programme in Cork in September 2011. In the first eight months there were 29 calls to the out-of-hours services. This is an average of almost three a month and shows that there is a need for these out-of-hour services. “The difficult situations that require intervention by social workers don’t just occur during normal working hours, they very often arise at night and at weekends. When problems do occur it is vital that there is access to the necessary supports. The pilot programme has highlighted this need. “The project is still running and involves the provision by local HSE staff of social work support out-ofhours where deemed necessary by Gardai. As part of the pilot project HSE social workers are on call out of hours to respond to referrals. “The next phase of the pilot programme is a detailed evaluation of the service. The HSE has undertaken an initial internal evaluation and it has also commissioned an independent external assessment of the project. It is expected that the independent assessment will be completed in the very near future. I understand that a decision on progression to a national rollout will be made following evaluation of the two pilot projects and other relevant data. “Throughout the running of the pilot programme social workers and Gardaí have co-operated to ensure the delivery of this programme. I call on the HSE to prioritise the assessment of this programme so that its overall effectiveness can be determined.”

Poetry Corner with Ronnie McGinn

It can be a great feeling to write a poem for oneself or for a particular person. And while one may find it satisfactory to acquire and preserve the good for an individual, writing a poem for a group or for the greater community can offer a finer and more divine emotion of inner reward.

Wanted!

On the other hand trying to practice what one preaches can often be far more difficult. Our poem this week is dedicated to the memory of my late brother in law, Joe O’Sullivan of Waterpark, Carrigaline, Co Cork, Ireland, whose anniversary occurs on 7th June. Joe was a great family man, a good friend, and an esteemed member of the community. We all miss him, May he Rest in Peace.

We’ll Miss You We’ll miss you in the Springtime, When daffodils are new, And hearts reveal, the way they feel, Then we’ll be missing you. We’ll miss you in the summer, When blossoms pave the way, No joy will bless our emptiness, We’ll miss you everyday. We’ll miss you in the Autumn, When leaves begin to fall, As fireside nights bring us delights We’ll miss you most of all. We’ll miss you in the Winter, When Christmas time is nigh, You’ll be there in that somewhere, ’Tween nowhere and goodbye. Through the tapestries of time, We’ll miss what might have been, And in the night when all is quiet, We’ll miss you in our dreams. © Ronnie McGinn Send your poem to ‘The Poetry Corner’ / Douglas Post, Morris House, Douglas or you can email it direct to ronniemcginn@ eircom.net. If possible keep your poem to 20 lines. You may choose any subject you like, in any form you like as long as it’s original. We look forward to hearing from you. RonnieMcGinn

• Audrey Bowman, Proprietor of Zip Yard Cork.

A Turn up in the Downturn In the current economic slump Audrey Bowman, Owner of the Zip Yard on 4 Lavitts Quay is proving to be quite the Recessionista having just opened her second outlet in 3 Morris House, Church Street, Douglas, (0212390300). Audrey opened her first Zip Yard franchise in January 2010 and has never looked back. Founded in 2005, The Zip Yard is the largest clothing and garment alterations company in Ireland, with 21 stores already operating across the Republic and Northern Ireland. People are able to walk into the shop, without an appointment, and where necessary garments will be immediately measured or pinned in one of the large private fitting rooms. Over 90 per cent of work will be completed within 48-hours and a 1-hour express service will also be offered. Once garments are finished an automatic text message is also be sent to customers to inform them that garments are ready for collection. Having gone from strength to strength, Audrey believes she has the measure of success. “Our focus on customer satisfaction and our fresh modern approach to alterations has resulted in steady growth in a time of economic disaster so it felt like a natural progression to branch out to the suburbs of Cork” The Zip Yard is fast becoming known as Irelands Alterations boutique catering for all types of alterations and repairs, doing hems, zips, bridal wear, holy communion dresses, suits, jackets, leather and anything that can basically

fit under a machine. Their concept is simple, great customer service, a quick turnaround and a modern design and fit out. “A lot of people are buying bargain items online and looking to have them adjusted for an event like a wedding or a communion. We also do a lot of remodelling and up styling of vintage wear and good quality pieces found in charity shops or at the back of customers’ wardrobes. Whether its making something the perfect fit or bringing it up to current trends, we are flat out busy” The Zip Yard has created 8 jobs in the past 24 months and has no plan to stop there. Audrey sees herself as eventually managing her stores on a regional level aspiring to open another Cork location in the coming year. So what is the secret to Audreys success? “Hard work, determination and the ability to take a risk & move forward” Audrey highlights the importance of alterations in a time when people really do not have a large disposable income. “Small tweaks can update a garment and make it more wearable. For example, removing sleeves from a dress or changing a top’s V-neck to a boat-neck. Adding beading or a lace trim to the neckline, shoulders or hemline of a plain item will transform it into something special”. The Zip Yard are an alterations boutique, their seamstresses & tailors are expert on the technical side of alteration and will also know what can really bring a garment to life. Visit Audrey’s new store in Douglas & see for yourself what it’s all about.

Acid Reflux Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a chronic digestive disease that occurs when stomach acid or, occasionally, bile flows back (refluxes) into your food pipe (esophagus). The backwash of acid irritates the lining of your esophagus and causes GERD signs and symptoms. Signs and symptoms of GERD include acid reflux and heartburn. Both are common digestive conditions that most people experience from time to time. When these signs and symptoms occur more than twice each week or interfere with your daily life, doctors term this GERD. Most people can manage the discomfort of heartburn with lifestyle changes and over-the-counter medications. But for people with GERD, these remedies may offer only temporary relief. People with GERD may need stronger medications, even

surgery, to reduce symptoms.

Symptoms A burning sensation in your chest (heartburn), sometimes spreading to the throat, along with a sour taste in your mouth Chest pain Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia) Dry cough Hoarseness or sore throat Regurgitation of food or sour liquid (acid reflux) Sensation of a lump in the throat

Treatments Treatment for heartburn and other signs and symptoms of GERD usually begins with over-the-counter medications that control acid. If you don’t find relief within a few weeks, your doctor may recommend other treatments, including medications.

Diabetes, what do I do now?

Initial treatments to control heartburn Over-the-counter treatments that may help control heartburn include: Antacids that neutralize stomach acid. Medications to reduce acid production. Medications that block acid production and heal the esophagus. Prescription-strength medications If heartburn persists despite initial approaches, your doctor may recommend prescription-strength medications, such as: Prescription-strength H-2-receptor blockers. Prescription-strength proton pump inhibitors. Medications to strengthen the lower esophageal sphincter.

Lifestyle and home remedies Lifestyle changes may help reduce the frequency of heartburn. Consider trying to:

Maintain a healthy weight. Avoid tight-fitting clothing. Avoid foods that trigger heartburn. Don’t lie down after a meal. Elevate the head of your bed. Don’t smoke.

Alternative medicine No alternative medicines therapies are proven to treat GERD or to reverse damage to the esophagus. Still, some complementary and alternative therapies may provide some relief from the symptoms of GERD. Herbal remedies. Herbal remedies sometimes used for GERD symptoms include licorice, slippery elm, chamomile and marshmallow. Relaxation therapies. Techniques to calm stress and anxiety may reduce signs and symptoms of GERD. If you would like more information on treating and living with acid reflux, call Garvan at Lynch’s Pharmacy on 4366923.

Enjoy the glorious sunshine, but be aware of the consequences of over exposure to the sun. Sunburn can occur in less than fifteen minutes, and we all know someone who has suffered from Melanoma which is the most dangerous form of skin cancer which is often caused by sunshine and tanning beds. If the Melanoma is recognized and treated early it is almost always curable. The best course of action is prevention, sunscreen alone is not enough so stay in the shade, cover up wear a broad brimmed hat and UV blocking sunglasses. Take these precautions and enjoy the good weather since it tends not to last too long. Sunshine is a source of vitamin D which is essential for strong bones, and also protects against many health problems such as Osteoporosis even depression. Vitamin Dis known as the sunshine vitamin and many older people have high levels of vitamin D deficiency. There are also links to an increased risk of type 1 Diabetes , and also muscle and bone pain. Our trip to Glenstall Abbey is always that bit special with Fr Cuthbert who ensures we really enjoy our visit to the Icon church and beautiful gardens. Mass on the day was offered up for the young at heart and our special intentions. This was followed with a tour of the gardens, Many purchased gifts in the Abbey shop such as medals, rosary beads etc and all of which were blessed by Fr Cuthbert outside in the garden.

The Miracle Prayer Sacred Heart

Next year we will celebrate ten years of the “young at heart”, with many requests to write my book I have decided to do so. We have a rich store of memories of places that we have been too and the people that we have met. Many of you will have a story to tell from the last ten years, and I hope that many of you will contribute by telling what “young at heart” meant to you on your journey. Throughout the last ten years many will recall funny incidents or memorable occasions. Your assistance is needed compiling this book which is for the community about the community, so anybody with a memory contact me on 4363867.

Active Retired The members of the Carrigaline Active Retirement Association really know how to enjoy themselves. Last Thursday week they organized a picnic in the town park. Freshly made sandwiches home baked cakes and buns arrived in abundance. They procured tables and chairs from the Community Hall and laid them out in the green under the trees. In ideal summer conditions all enjoyed their picnic with hot tea and coffee. They were joined by footballer Nicholas Murphy and Brendan O’Driscoll Physical Therapist who complimented them on their initiative to provide the outdoor gym in the park. Nicholas advocated more use of this wonderful facility, which is available free to all in the community. Brendan O’Driscoll explained how all the pieces of exercise equipment were designed so as not to put a strain on the user. The two experts then gave the CARA members a demonstration on how best to use the gym equipment. The afternoon concluded with a sing song and all went home happy. Someone remarked that had they travelled a hundred miles they could not have found a better setting or a more enjoyable afternoon.

Outdoor Gym Demonstration GAA personalities Nicholas Murphy and Brendan O’Driscoll explained

the benefits of the various units of the outdoor gym in the Carrigaline Town Park to the members of the Carrigaline Active Retirement Association on Thursday last. Brendan O’Driscoll who is a Physical Therapist showed them how each piece of equipment should be used to exercise the various muscles of the body. Both himself and Nicholas went through the benefits of each piece of equipment all around the park to a very attentive audience. The Active Retired members asked many relevant questions about the Gym which Brendan O’Driscoll answered in detail explaining every aspect as he went along. The outdoor Gym is available to all members of the community at all times. Also attending the Outdoor Gym demonstration were Robyn Wallace and Claire Hurley from the Cork Sports Council and Kieran Ryan of the HSE.

Cllr Kieran McCarthy

McCarthy’s Forthcoming Community Projects Cllr. Kieran McCarthy’s ‘Make a Model Boat Project’ takes place this Sunday, 10th June, at the Atlantic Pond at 2pm. Aimed at Cork students in primary and secondary schools, it is about making a model boat at home from recycled materials and bringing it along for judging to the Atlantic Pond. The event is being run in association with Meitheal Mara’s Ocean to City Maritime Festival and the Lifetime Lab. There are two categories, one for primary and one for secondary students. There are prizes for best models and the event is free to enter. Cllr. McCarthy, who is heading up the event, notes “I am encouraging creation, innovation and imagination amongst our young people, which are important traits for all of us to develop”. See www.kieranmccarthy.ie under community programme for application form details or contact Kieran. On Saturday, 23rd June, the Friends of St Finbarr’s Hospital will be holding its annual Garden Party from 1pm. As part of a whole series of events planned, Cllr Kieran McCarthy invites the general public to take part in a historical walking tour of St. Finbarre’s Hospital at 12noon (free event, meet at gate). The former workhouse, which opened in December 1841, was an isolated place – built beyond the toll house and toll gates, which gave entry to the city and which stood just below the end of the wall of St. Finbarr’s Hospital in the vicinity of the junction of the Douglas and Ballinlough Roads. The Douglas Road workhouse was also one of the first of over 130 workhouses to be designed by the Poor DouglasPostAd_Layout 1 29/11/2011 Page 1 Law Commissioners’ architect George11:55 Wilkinson.

Top 10 Chart

In The Loop with Peter Bowles D.J.

The Donegal band, The Plea, have recently released their debut album ‘The Dreamers Stadium’ which has been receiving rave reviews from the likes of Hot Press magazine as well as achieving playlist status on Irish national radio station Today FM. Music seems to come naturally to Irish guitar-rock outfit The Plea. After hearing debut album The Dreamers Stadium, it’s hard to imagine a time when you hadn’t sung along to Oh Ah Yay, leapt about to Feel It Ticking, or felt shivers down your spine from the majestic The Glass Waltz. Brothers Denny and Dermot Doherty grew up in Ballyliffin, Co Donegal, which is the kind of place where, according to lead-vocalist and guitarist Denny: “If someone’s born, there’s music. If someone dies, there’s music.” Anecdotally, Denny and his older brother, guitarist Dermot, had a gran who was a promising opera singer. “She had 16 children instead, which put a hitch in that plan, but she still sings in a choir”, says Denny. No such hitches as yet for the Doherty brothers. The Plea have produced such a powerful album of wondrously skygazing anthems, one can almost envisage the rolling hills and majestic landscapes of their childhood haunts. Speaking to them, it’s clear that music has enhanced their upbringing in a big way. “A lot of people in our family play music. Our older brother was first to get a guitar in the house – an electric cream fender copy with a small practice amp. He’s a carpenter now and we’re musicians, but he still can play a mean one string ballad. Then Denny started playing as well. I was in a school band and Den sang with us in a rehearsal one night…it was pretty obvious that he was the best singer of the bunch. We’ve been playing music together ever since” (Dermot). Loreen, the Swedish entrant for last week’s Eurovision Song Contest, has stormed the Irish charts debuting at No. 1 with her song Euphoria. The song received the highest awardable points (12) from Ireland, along with a whole host of other countries to win the contest with 372 points last Saturday night in Baku, Azerbaijan. The song has gone to No.1 in Germany, Belgium, Spain, Greece, Netherlands, Austria, Malta, Cyprus and Switzerland following the competition and is quickly climbing in the UK charts,

expected to be a contender for Sunday night’s No.1 announcement. 28-year-old Loreen shot to fame in her native Sweden when she participated in their television singing competition Idol 2004. Madonna has kicked off her World tour in support of recent album, MDNA, with a huge show in Tel Aviv. The 53 year-old singer called the show “pretty violent” in a recent interview and will embark on 84 shows across four legs spanning North America, South America, Europe and Asia. Jean-Paul Gaultier has created the wardrobe for the entire tour and Madonna praised him saying “he’s a genius”, the French designer has even updated her iconic cone bra outfit. Madonna is also working with Riccardo Tisci of Givenchy on some of the wardrobe. Johnny Depp may be a master of transformation for his various roles, but the actor donned a different hat when he jumped on stage to perform with The Black Keys at the MTV Movie Awards. Depp showcased his musical abilities on the electric guitar at the ceremony, held in the Gibson amphitheatre in California, as he joined the band on stage to strum along to Gold On The Ceiling and Lonely Boy. Depp was present at the ceremony to receive the MTV Generation Award, which was presented to him by Aerosmith musicians Steven Tyler and Joe Perry. The 48 year-old actor joked upon receiving the award that “This is the get out of the business award. Based on watching all of those clips there is clearly something wrong with me”. My old flower, Justin Bieber, is ‘taking it easy’ after suffering a concussion. The 18-year-old singer walked into a glass wall backstage during his concert in Paris last week. The ‘Boyfriend’ performer managed to complete his set on stage, but passed out briefly in his dressing room afterwards. Doctors told press that Justin suffered a concussion, but he has reassured fans that he is fine. He tweeted: ‘Just smacked my head and needed some water. All good. I’m Canadian. We are tough. LOL. It’s all good. Just gotta take it easy the rest of the night. Back at it again for you guys tomorrow. Thanks.’

Marquee to Embrace People Power Frank Hanover The Live at the Marquee series of concerts is to dramatically engage the Republic of Ireland’s three pre-knockout round of matches against Croatia, Spain and Italy at the European Championships in June. On Sunday June 10th, Thursday June 14th and Monday June 18 th at the Football Party nights in the Showground situated near Pairc ui Caoimh, entire families will be able to see and hear the matches vividly and memorably on an extraordinarily vast screen, be entertained musically, have their faces painted, interact with balloon makers, meet a large furry dinosaur and also be fed and watered prior to and after the games. The tickets for the Football Party series -licensed by both UEFA and by RTE for their commentary and punditry- which are interspersed with gigs featuring The Specials and The Coronas during that period, range from 35 euro to 45 euro (www.ticketmaster.ie, or call 0818 719 300) depending on whether you’re a family, or standing or seated. The first hundred children to arrive will be given a spot prize of a football and other spot prizes will follow. Much as you’ll find at any football match there is an ‘away’ section and the organizers are providing for Croatian, Spanish and Italian supporters, food to suit individually national tastes. The hope of the Football Party is in the words of Peter Aiken, that people will retain a lifelong memory that’s “all about family before match time and that’s all about the match once you’re in the arena”. In addition to the massively subscribed sell-out appearances of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Jessie J, Imelda May, Jedward and Olly Murs -who’s sold out two nights- the Live at the Marquee series will additionally feature Christy Moore with Declan Sinnott, Steps and cutting edge French electro-dance-pop duo Justice who open the series on Thursday, June 7th. This is the eighth year of the popular concert series and asking about his primary memories, said Aiken, “It’s been good from day one, the rain falling on the tent for Diana Ross’ appearance in 2005 was not happy to begin with but she hit the stage and from the moment she sang “once I was afraid I was petrified” the show was mind-blowing. Personally, meeting Rod Stewart with Gordon Strachan was a big deal and Brian Wilson’s concert too.” The Marquee goes from strength-to-strength with memories.

Ballinlough Community News With Mary Cremin Congratulations & Cleberations!!!! Congratulations to Martin O’Donovan of Ballinlough on his great win last Saturday night on Winning Streak, a car for €40,000 & €13,8000 totalling €53,800, well done Martin!

Ballinlough Clean Up Last Saturday morning the first ever clean up took place in Ballinough, luck was on our side as it was a beautiful suuny morning. One of our new council memebers that came on board this year at the A.G.M, Paul Conway sugguested the idea of a ‘Clean Up’ he did all the orgaising, and we were delighted with the turn out. All age groups turned up, armed with spades, rakes, shovels, paper pickers, it was all hands on deck. At the end of two hours there was a trailer full to the brim, a saisfactory mornings work. Ballnough Credit Union sponsered light refreshments, which were very welcome. It was a great way to meet new people, the craic was mighty. Bring on the next one!

Ballinlough May Procession The annual May Procession took place last Sunday evening. It left the Community Centre at 7.30 with Canon Michael Crowley and the Butter Exchange band, it took the route through Belmont Park , Somerton Road and Beechwood Park and finished in Our Lady of Lourdes Church where Canon Jim O’Donovan celebrated Benediction. It was lovely to see the first Communion boys and girls, also everyone else that took part in it. Great credit is due to the excellent organisation by the Local Legion of Mary

Ballinlough Writers The next meeting of the Ballinlough Writers Group will be held in John O’Sullivan’s (Board Room), Douglas on Friday 15th June at 5.30 pm. The Ballinlough Writers Group meets on the 3rd Friday of every month at 5.30pm. New members always welcome. We look forward to seeing you there.

Victor Serebriakoff, International President of Mensa, once made up a poem about Hyperbolic Acid, a substance so corrosive that it would eat its way through anything. One day Sir Clive Sinclair, the inventor and UK Mensa Chairman, phoned his old friend with some stunning news. “Victor, you’ll never believe this but I have actually invented you Hyperbolic Acid! Stay where you are and I’ll dash round to your house with a flask of it right now”. Victor replaced the phone and chuckled to himself. How could he tell he was being teased?

wet” continued the reluctant parent. “Oh, no we won’t” said Johnny. “There are sharks down there” said his father. “I know – I’ve always wanted to see real sharks” said Johnny. “Won’t you be scared?” inquired the father. “Of course not they won’t harm us” Johnny told his dad where he meant to go. “OK you win” said the relieved parent. “Let’s go” said Johnny. Johnny and his Dad are not going diving, or taking a trip in a glassbottomed boat. So how are they going under the sea without coming to any harm?

How to Make Babies! A second grader came home from school and said to her grandmother, “Grandma, guess what? We learned how to make babies today.” The grandmother, more than a little surprised, tried to keep her cool. “That’s interesting,” she said, “how do you make babies?” “It’s simple,” replied the girl. “You just change ‘y’ to ‘i’ and add ‘es’.”

Family Ties with Geraldine Blake

Freewheelin’ in Donnybrook My car broke down the other night. It was a typical hectic Monday evening for me; collect the youngest from GAA at 6pm, then head up to Donnybrook for the eldest who finishes soccer at 6.30 and the middle guy, same venue but he didn’t finish until 7.oopm. I brought along my Stephen King book and told them to run around and play until it was time to go. Thank God for long summer evenings. At 7pm, the three boys climbed into the car sweaty, weary and starving for their dinner. I went to start the car. The battery was dead. I rang our insurance company which offered a break down service and help line which must be in Scotland judging by the accent. I told the girl that I didn’t know the name of the hill I was on but that I was in Donnybrook, Douglas. She said that a mechanic would be out in an hour. The boys started whining. I rang my mother and sacrificing Coronation Street; she was out like a bullet and whisked them away leaving me to my fate. I had my book and an unexpected quiet hour, I was content. An hour later, my mobile rang and a thick Dublin accent said, “How’re ya?” My heart sank. I said, “You’re in Dublin, aren’t you?” He said, “Yeah, I’m in Donnybrook, where are you?” Wrong Donnybrook. I told him that I was in Cork to which he replied, “Well I’m no good to you so, am I?!” and hung up.

I rang the insurance company again. I was told that I was now ‘Priority’ but that nobody could get to me before 10pm. I explained to the girl that I was in a football ground which was due to be locked up in the next half an hour. Miss Helpful suggested that I find a man to wheel the car out onto the road and to wait there. I went looking for manly assistance. I approached my son’s coach and he and two others readily agreed to push me out the gate. It was comical driving steadily backwards across a field with three men on my bonnet. Once on the road, the coach suggested that since I was near the top of the hill, I should freewheel down and try jump start the car myself by pumping the clutch. I had seen my father do it countless times as a child in our knackered car; the 12 year old thrill seeker inside of me was tempted to take on the challenge of careering through a residential area in an out-of-control car. The three of them were about to launch me when the rescue man suddenly appeared. Mass murder averted. The rescue guy said the break down service were hopeless and suggested that I take up membership with the AA right after I buy a new battery. I’ve actually been very lucky with my breakdowns, they always happen within walking distance of home and on summer evenings when I’m not rushing anywhere. My guardian angel is definitely paying attention!

Things to do This Week Sometimes it can go against the grain to even mention getting ready for winter or next spring before our summer has really started, unfortunately it must be done, but we’ll try to keep it to the occasional hint. As usual we try to give you a few ideas on what might need doing in your garden this week. Not everything in this article may apply to your garden - but there might be something, if not this week maybe next week. time to fall out, and dress the area with general fertiliser

Flower Garden Start taking soft cuttings of shrubs for rooting under glass. Take cuttings (pipings) of pinks and border carnations, and root in a frame. Prune remaining Buddleia davidli stems this month for late flowers. For top quality rose blooms, remove side buds to leave a single main bud. Prune any large branches from walnuts, magnolias and prunus species, and paint the wounds with pruning compound.

Kitchen Garden Start gathering herbs in quantity for drying or freezing. A batch of small fast carrots sown now will miss attacks by carrot root flies. Water young and leafy crops, and then mulch if prolonged dry weather is forecast. Thin and peg down strawberry runners needed for propagation. Sow perpetual spinach for winter and spring use. Sow dwarf French beans for late crops under cloches. Pinch out the sideshoots of figs to 3-4 leaves. Spray potatoes with a copper fungicide if there are signs of blight. Stop pulling rhubarb this week, feed if not down, and leave to grow unchecked.

Lawns & Hedges

Green House Take cuttings of geraniums, fuchsias, marguerites and other plants to train as standards. Introduce predators if greenhouse whitefly and red spider mites become troublesome. Start thinning grapes as trusses develop. Apply full shading to the glass, if not already done. Check growing bags daily for watering; install an automatic trickle system to save work. Stop large-flowered chrysanthemums now, and again in 6-8 weeks’ time. Stand greenhouse pots on capillary matting if watering becomes onerous in hot weather.

Records Broken at 2012 Cork City Marathon Freddy Keron wins the Cork City Marathon in record time of 2:22:11, while defending champion Angela McCann successfully defends her title in the women’s event Freddy Keron has won the sixth annual Cork City Marathon today in a time of 2:22:11 beating the official Cork City Marathon record by over three minutes. The Kenyan athlete, a first time competitor in Cork, is the first overseas winner of the Cork City Marathon. It was one of the closest races in recent years and saw defending champion Sergui Ciobanu finishing in second place, running a personal best time of 2:22:55 – over two minutes faster than his winning time last year. Huw Lobb was third in a time of 2:28:37. The first Corkman home was Cillian O’Leary who finished fourth in his first ever marathon. Cillian finished in a time of 2:29:52. Completing the top five was Brian Leahy in a time of 2:33:14. In the women’s marathon, Clonmel athlete Angela McCann successfully defended her title, finishing comfortably in a time of 2:53:02. The mother of three shaved almost half a minute off the winning time she set in last year’s race. Anne Curley of Donore Harriers finished in second place in a time of 2:54:35. Next home was Mary O’Leary in a time of 2:59:46, followed closely by Ann Marie Holland (2:59:54). Helen Leonard completed the top five in a time of 3:00:52. The first relay team to cross the line was the West Waterford relay team who recorded a finish time of 2:21:30. The team was made up of Raivis Zakis, Sandis Bralitis, Philip Harty and Brian Murphy. The Garda AC won the inaugural Inter-Services Championships Team Relay, finishing in a time of 2:30:25.

who lined the marathon route to cheer on this year’s participants. The ‘marathon for everyone’ saw individuals of all levels participate – from first timers to professional athletes, with athletes running either the full marathon, half marathon or the relay event as part of a team of up to five people. Athletes travelled from as far afield as Canada, Australia, Malaysia, Puerto Rico and Hong Kong, while 27 counties from across Ireland were represented on the day. Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr Terry Shannon, was on hand to offer words of encouragement to all those taking part. “The Cork City Marathon is one of the biggest occasions in Cork’s sporting and cultural calendar. Each year the marathon grows in strength and this year is no different. It really is a fantastic occasion that not only promotes Cork City as a vibrant and exciting place to visit, but also provides a welcome boost to the local economy by attracting visitors from near and far. I’m really looking forward to the day ahead, and can’t wait to see first hand the great support that the people of Cork are sure to deliver in their thousands.”

Jerry Forde completed the wheelchair marathon in a time of 4:12:35. The Cork City Marathon kicked off on St Patrick’s Street at 9am with up to 8,000 athletes competing in the full marathon, half marathon and team relay. The half marathon began on Skehard Road at 11am. Weather conditions were ideal for athletes, not to mention the thousands of spectators

Finally, 30 years after competing in the first ever Cork City Marathon in 1982, Tom Corkery (50) returned to Cork in an attempt to match his original time of three hours and 49 minutes. Tom eventually crossed the line in a time of 3:59:54 - just 10 minutes off his target time.

The first woman home in the half marathon was defending champion Lizzie Lee who finished in a time of 1:20:34.

Euro 2012 Preview

Douglas GAA Sam Collins Tribute Night:

by Mark Maher With the European Championships starting next week, Irish fans wait in anticipation for their first major tournament in 10 years. This time around, we find ourselves in a tough group with the reigning champions Spain, Italy and Croatia. However, many fans feel optimistic about our chances and there’s no reason why they shouldn’t be. Here’s a review of our opponents in Group C: Spain: If Spain can retain their crown, then they will have to be considered as the greatest international team of all time after back to back wins and a World Cup in between. With players such as Xavi, Iniesta, and Fabregas at their disposal, they play a high tempo passing game that devastates their opponents. However, good news for Ireland is that record goalscorer David Villa has been ruled out through injury along with Carlos Puyol. Also, a reported unrest in the camp between Barcelona and Real Madrid players have shown a decline in results over the past year, losing to England and drawing with Costa Rica from their last 4 games. Italy: The Azzurri conceded just 2 goals as they took 26 points from 30 in qualification. However, they are at the start of a transitional period with the likes of Cannavaro, Del Piero, Totti, Zambrotta and Gattuso all departing from their World Cup winning team. They are always well organised and still have the likes of Buffon, Pirlo, and De Rossi along with a host of talented players such as Montolivo, Marchisio and Balotelli. Trappatoni will know the Italians well and Ireland have a good record against them, winning 2 and drawing 2 of their last 5 encounters. Croatia: Croatia are similar to the Irish, as they are a small country with a population of around 4 million and also share the same passion for football. Tough to break down and lethal going forward, the Croat’s have been touted as dark horses for the tournament. Currently standing 8th in the FIFA world rankings, there’s no reason why they can’t have a successful tournament. With Siminic and Lovren at the heart of defence, Modric, Srna, Rakitic pulling the strings in midfield, and Olic, Eduardo, Jelavic up front – they are not to be taken lightly. A good result for Ireland in the opening game could prove crucial as Croatia are well capable of taking points off Spain and Italy. It’s

worth noting that Croatia have never beaten Ireland, losing 1 and drawing 3 since achieving independence. Groups don’t come much tougher than this, however with the likes of Given, Dunne, McGeady, and Keane, Ireland know that under Trapattoni’s guidance we have every chance of progressing from the group. The boys in green are unbeaten in 11 games winning 7 and drawing 4, conceding only 3 goals – keeping both Italy and Croatia scoreless in the process (Beat Italy 2-0 and drew with Croatia 0-0.) The group stages of the Euros can actually be considered tougher to progress from than the World Cup’s as with only 16 teams there are no easy games. Since 1992, both Denmark and Greece have become shock winners proving that anything can happen at the Euro’s. With talent such as Ronaldo, Van Persie, Rooney and Ribery at this year’s tournament, football fans can’t wait for it to get under way! Group A: Poland, Russia, Czech Republic, Greece Group B: Germany, Holland, Portugal, Denmark

At the time of the foundation of the G.A.A. in 1884, Douglas was a vibrant industrial village with the source of employment primarily provided by the Donnybrook and St. Patrick’s Woollen Mills. It was in this environment that Douglas G.A.A. Club was founded in 1887. Following the outbreak of World War I in 1914, the club struggled but re-emerged as Castletreasure G.A.A. Club and later as St. Columba’s G.A.A. Club. The club rebranded as Douglas G.A.A. Club in 1938 and during the intervening years the Douglas G.A.A. Club has flourished while contributing to the sporting culture and social life of the inhabitants of Douglas. In the 125 years of the clubs existence the late Liam Collins embodied the spirit of Douglas Hurling & Football Club. Affectionately known as Sam, he has been missed by all connected with the club since his passing three years ago. On Friday 6th July, Douglas Hurling & Football Club host a Liam Collins tribute night of Irish ballads, conversation and nostalgia. Master of ceremonies Liam Edwards will welcome musicians Jimmy Crowley, Kevin Beale, Tom Moore, Donie Carroll, Martin Daly, Agnes Dwyer, Cyril Kavanagh and surprise guests. As Douglas has grown from a small village to a thriving suburb during the past fifty years, Douglas Hurling

& Football Club has been fortunate that many talented people have settled locally and offered their experiences to the club. This has produced a melting pot of diverse influences that has had a profound impact on the clubs fortunes. For example, in recent years natives of Milford, Raheny, Skibbereen, Ballyhea and Fermoy have been instrumental in the nurturing of several successful Douglas teams. For people who have made Douglas their home, the Liam Collins tribute night is an ideal opportunity to take a step back in time and find out what Douglas was really like in a previous era. Entry is 10 euro and tickets are available from the social committee or at the club pavilion. Douglas G.A.A. Summer Camp:

For the past twenty years Eddie Murphy has run successful summer camps for local children at Douglas G.A.A. Club. In association with SuperValu, Grange, this years camp runs for two weeks (9th July-13th July and 16th July-20th July). As well as learning the basic skills of hurling and football, participants will get the opportunity to go on an excursion. The fee per week is 65 euro and reductions are available for second or further children from the same family. For further details contact Eddie Murphy on (087) 6461890.

Group D: England, France, Sweden, Ukraine Each week we will have a look at a player that could make a difference at this year’s tournament. First up is Mesut Ozil: The 23 year old creative midfielder is a key player for a strong German side considered one of the favourites. Often underrated, he’s more of a provider then a natural goal scorer and has the ability to unlock defences’ with a magical left foot. Ozil has flourished since signing for Real Madrid and in 2 years he has 47 assists - higher then both Xavi and Iniesta combined. With Germany, his 7 assists were more than any other international during Euro 2012 qualification. His only criticism at club level is his lack of goals, but 8 goals in 32 internationals for his country is impressive for a midfielder. Superb ball control combined with great vision and creativity, the playmaker will be instrumental if Germany are to win the Euro’s for a record third time. On form, he could be one of the outsiders to win player of the tournament.

Cork’s Little All-Ireland

The heading above is the term used to describe the Cork Senior County Hurling Championship. To me the term was associated with the ‘70/’80s when the games involving The Rockies/Barr’s vs. The Glen attracted huge crowds. Such was the rivalry between the big three, and indeed between the northside and southside. Players from these clubs would have made up the majority of the Cork intercounty panel. This was in an era when other sports were not nearly so popular. Of course Sky T.V, was not in existence then. For a county final in the 1970s, Barr’s and Glen attracted a crowd of 36,000 The big three are now but a pale shadow of their former selves. I do not mean any disrespect to these clubs but the power-base has shifted in recent years to East Cork and teams such as Érin’s Own, Sarsfields, Midleton and Carrigtwohill have come to the fore, and lest we forget, Newtownshandrum has won four county titles in the past decade. One should ask the question, are there more distractions in the city? Of course the dual club is another issue. The rural clubs are working on their underage structures and this has clearly borne fruit. The Games Begin

Over the first weekend of the senior hurling championship I witnessed three games. Blackrock and Ballymartle was an interesting encounter. The stickwork displayed by the southeast side was way superior to that of the Rockies. It seemed to me that at times Ballymartle overplayed the ball, whilst the Blackrock backs were caught ball-watching on occasions. In their second year up senior Ballymartle should have scored more goals if they had taken the opportunities that came their way. To their credit Blackrock dominated the game for 10/15 minutes of the second half and had Ballymartle on the rack for that time. Generally Ballymartle were impressive; they displayed some fine ball-skills and have pace to burn. For the fishing village the back door beckons and an encounter with Courcey Rovers. A tough assignment. Glen Rovers vs. St. Finbarr’s

This game served up a poor opening half. The Glen were very dependent

on Patrick Horgan for scores from frees and from play, and when the Blues came more into the game the Glen struggled to make an impression on the scoreboard. The second half produced a demonstration of some excellent scores from the Barr’s while the Northsiders were very wasteful. The Glen on the day didn’t seem to have a game plan. There was little or no direction to their play. I can recall a few years ago when the Glen received a lesson from Na Piarsaigh in the opening round and were made to look a very poor side. They recovered to reach the county final and perhaps they should have won it. A huge improvement is needed if they are to defeat Bishopstown who gave Midleton a bellyful and were unlucky to lose by two points.

Congratulation s to coaches Gary Butler, Martin McCarthy & Jim O’Leary and their dedicated squad of players on winning their final match of the season in style to win the title following a six-match unbeaten run. Cal Sheehy, Ian Dorney, captain Conor O’Leary & Brian Stockle shared the goals for the newly crowned champions who played some fine football to bring the curtain down on a magnificent campaign. Surprise Surp …………?

Using the word surprise when referring to the Douglas victory over Na Piarsaigh will probably get me in hot water. But look at the stats before the game; the bookies had Na Piarsaigh at 3 to 1 on with Douglas at 5/2. The league form showed that Na Piarsaigh had lost just one game. Douglas had a mere 40% success rate in the same competition. From the outset Douglas played with an intensity for which they would not be renowned, displaying clean, crisp hurling. No doubt Piarsaigh will be disappointed with the result. I feel sure the Douglas management and players will stay firmly grounded and level-headed in the face of this victory, but there are bigger fish to fry before the year end. Congrats to the Echo

May I take this opportunity to congratulate the Echo on a wonderful 12 page preview of the county hurling championship. The interesting analysis made for excellent reading. Keep up the coverage.

O’Connell Cup – Semi-Final Blarney Utd. 2; Douglas Hall 0

The Seniors ended the season with a disappointing defeat to relegated Blarney at O’Shea Pk. Following the highs of last weeks cup ties with Wexford Youths, it was always going to be a big ask to replicate recent form.

This game very nearly produced a huge shock when 14/1 on Newtown had to go to extra time to defeat their East Cork opponents.

opener, Chris Fox powered a superb 25 yard strike past Graham Doyle before Brian Wilkinson headed in a Fox cross from close range. After the hosts went close through Croke & Nolan, the latter finally beat Adrian O’Donovan to level on 52 minutes. The Youths had keeper Doyle red carded for handling outside the box with eight minutes remaining only for Nolan to break the visitor’s hearts when he capitalized on a moment of hesitation at the back to O’Donovan for what proved to be the winner with less than five minutes left on the clock.
