Fine Gael: Keep your pro-life promise!! Dear Editor, A canvasser called to my door the other evening on the issue of abortion. As far as I had been concerned, Fine Gael was a pro-life party with a strong prolife tradition and record, as demonstrated most recently when all its TDs voted against Clare Daly’s Abortion Bill. I commend the party for this. I was shocked to learn that there is a danger that Fine Gael, in coalition with the pro-abortion Labour party, might break its election promise not to bring in abortion. There have been a number of very worrying developments lately. Fine Gael has set up a so-called ‘Expert Group’ to make recommendations under which circumstances abortion should be legalised in this country. Furthermore, there are numerous known pro-aborts in The Group, and the legal counsel for the pro-abortion side in the X-case. It baffles me how a pro-life party could establish a group with such a remit and include appointees who are so blatantly pro-abortion. It would seem that The Group is stacked in favour of abortion. Worse still, The Fine Gael Minister for Health, James Reilly, has indicated his support for abortion legislation. Referring to a call on Ireland by The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) to clarify Irish law on abortion, he said it needed to be “implemented as expeditiously as possible”. This is disturbing. Why has Enda Kenny not had him retract his comments? A number of questions are raised for Fine Gael: Has James Reilly signalled Fine Gael’s intention to break it’s electoral pro-life commitment? Does it intend to attempt go against the will of the pro-life majority in this country? Does it propose to legalise a procedure that is fundamentally wrong, that harms women and butchers babies? I urge all Fine Gael voters, supporters, Councillors, TDs, Ministers and last but not least, the leadership, to be true to the party’s pro-life values by speaking out against any moves to legalise the killing of unborn babies. This will protect women and save babies. Yours faithfully, Lorraine O’Driscoll Goggin’s Hill, Ballinhassig Disclaimer: Any views or opinions expressed in these letters are solely those of the individual author(s) and do1 not necessarily11:55 represent those DouglasPostAd_Layout 29/11/2011 Page 1 of The Douglas Post.

Seen, Read + Heard by Michael O’Hanlon Well it’s been a funny ol’ week, Mick Wallace making the front page of every newspaper in Ireland, headlines on T.V. and radio. Mick has really knocked far more important issues off the papers, tv and radio. Our leader Enda Kenny will not tell the people of Ireland what Frau Merkel told him or what he asked for. It’s probably too complex for the peasants to understand! Mick Wallace is one of 166 in the Dail, yet he created more employment during the boom years than all the other 155 TDs (including the Ceann Comhairle) put together. Yet Mick makes good press, it’ll keep the people’s anger focused on Wexford.

that she can’t afford make-up because Sinn Fein takes half her salary. There’s a joke there somewhere, but it won’t come out at the moment!!! Before I wrap up, does anybody know why George Lee left politics? The man topped the pole in a Dublin constituency and a few months later, he was gone. Fine Gael TD Peter Matthews doesn’t look too happy lately, does he? Time will tell. Until next time if the Good Lord’s willing and the creeks don’t rise.

Michael O’Hanlon.

How many of you remember November 2011 when after the last General Election over €40,000 worth of pre-paid Dail envelopes went missing from the bastion of democracy? An Oireachtas spokesman said “TDs and Senators would be written to or more drastic options would be looked at, including the possibility of seeking refunds”. Do you believe it, a saucy letter to people who stole from the people!!! It’s said that leaders should lead by example. The present government promised us a new broom, a clean sweep, a cap on Government advisors set at €92,000 a year – that didn’t last long. The leader Enda Kenny and the following Ministers broke their own rules, Eamon Gilmore, Simon Coveney, Joan Burton, Brendan Howlin, Richard Bruton who had to call Enda to put pressure on the Department to give Ciaran Conlon a salary which reflected his true worth. Enda said “Mr. Conlon had been chosen by Richard Bruton for the specific purpose of getting people off the Dole. Unemployment figures up, approaching 15%, where are you Ciaran? Back to the other Ministers who sanctioned increases for their advisers, Leo Varadkar, and Pat Rabbitte. Total cost of people telling our leaders what to say and do? Almost €3,500.000 (three and a half million). Mick cancelled his trip to Poland for the Irish match, but did you see Seanie Fitz wrapped patriotically in green at the venue, staying in a €500 a night hotel. How many of you know that Sean was a member of the Aer Lingus board, and has free air travel with Aer Lingus for life? We wonder why Mrs. Merkel won’t lend us more money; she sees our County and City Managers paid more than some European Prime Ministers!!! Two female politicians made the news in the past couple of weeks – Fine Gael TD Aine Collins told us that she found it hard to live on €142,000 a year, that’s only €2730 a week. I think Aine needs to contact MABS. They might help her to budget her housekeeping!!! Another TD Sinn Fein’s Sandra McLellan tells us

• Lysa O’Driscoll, Watergrasshill, Committee Member Aideen Donnelan and Riona Cotter, Tower at the second annual Mercy Universtiy Hospital Foundation Ladies Lunch in the Maryborough Hotel. All proceeds will go to Cancer services at the Mercy Hospital, Cork. Darragh Kane

Know Your Rights Question: How do I find out if I have penalty points on my driving licence? Answer

Penalty points are not physically recorded on your licence. They are recorded on your driving licence record, which is held on the National Vehicle and Driver File operated by the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport. If you have committed a driving offence that incurs penalty points you will get a written notice from the Road Safety Authority (RSA) telling you that penalty points are being added to your driving licence. This notice will include your name, address, date, time and location of the driving offence concerned and confirmation of the fact that you either paid the fixed charge for the offence or were convicted in the court of such an offence. The notice will also contain the date on which the notice was issued to you. This is important as the points will only be added to your licence 28 days after this date. Penalty points have a three-year lifespan. That means they will remain on your current driving licence for a period of 3 years from the start date

(effective date). Any period where your licence is out of date won’t count as part of the 3 years. If you accumulate 12 points and are disqualified for a period of 6 months, the points which led to the disqualification are removed at the end of the 6 months.

Active Retired The members of the Carrigaline Active Retirement Association held a games day in the Parish Centre on Thursday afternoon last. They gave an airing to a number of the games they have gathered over the years. One of the first games on show was the “colourful parachute” which needs careful co-ordination and created great excitement. At the outset of the afternoon CARA was addressed by Community School Chaplin, Mr Kevin Mc Closkey, who was looking for people living alone who may like young people to visit them. This Thursday June 14th CARA will be given a talk on the implication of closing down and replacing the analog

On Wednesday and Thursday 27th and 28th June Cara are off on their last outing before the summer break, they head for County Kildare for an overnight stay. Laya Healthcare approval for PET scanner at CUH Fine Gael Cork South Central TD and Chairman of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children, Jerry Buttimer, has welcomed the decision of Laya to cover the PET/CT scanner at CUH. “I welcome the decision by Laya Healthcare to facilitate its customers using the PET scanner at CUH. This decision will enable Laya customers in Cork to have access to the same facilities that are available in Dublin, Galway and Waterford without having to travel vast distances. This decision means that its Cork customers can now use the new scanner on an out-patient basis. “The people of Cork are still waiting for confirmation from the VHI on whether it will provide cover for the use of the PET scanner. However, I have been informed that the VHI has sought some additional information from the providers of the service and that, subject to this being satisfactory, it expects to be able to enter into an agreement to provide cover for this service for its members. If this transpires it would be a welcome development. “Also, the VHI has indicated to me that it is considering options for providing long-term PET scanning and brachytherapy services in Cork. I would suggest to the VHI that the PET scanner in the CUH should form an integral part of these services. “These commitments by private health insurers are very significant for all patients in Cork who need access to the PET scanner. Already the PET scanner is operating two days a week for public patients; these decisions will now ensure that private patients can use the facility when it is not being used for public patients. “Ultimately there should be just one referral pathway for patients in Cork who need to access the PET scanner. There should no longer be a two-tier system which requires some patients to travel to Dublin. It is important that there is universal access to the PET scanner based on need, not whether someone is a public or private patient. “Universal access to the PET scanner has the potential to benefit the entire southern region. It will help the long term viability of this service and it will also deliver the maximum benefit of the €6.85 million investment in the treatment and diagnostic facility to all patients.”

Poetry Corner with Ronnie McGinn

There are some poems that just grab you. Poems that have a magic of their own leaving you uncertain whether you really understood their full meaning. My mother died seven years ago, she was 94 and had been suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. This week’s poem by Brandon L.Brown of Defiance, Ohio, caught my attention. Brandon works as a nurse and loves writing. He lives with his wife Kristi and daughter, Madison.

Wanted!

My sincere thanks to Margery Snyder of About.com:Poetry for all her help. If you haven’t done so already it’s a web site well worth a visit.

The Woman In Room 808 “She didn’t always look this way,” pulling a comb through her mother’s matted hair. “Just last week she was fine, she was okay,” she said while the woman in bed rattled away about Sammy, her cat, and the snakes on the floor. “She didn’t always look this way,” she said again, the light of day making paste of the face I saw taped to the door. “Just last week she was fine, she was okay. See that picture on the door? See the way She smiles? Daddy put that rose in her hair… she didn’t always look this way. Mama, dear, you need help with your tray, Mama don’t, you’re getting food everywhere. Just last week she was fine, she was okay,” she said while the woman in bed played in her carrots and pears. “She didn’t always look this way. Just last week she was fine, she was okay.” B. Lee Brown Send your poem to ‘The Poetry Corner’ / Douglas Post, Unit 29 C, St Patrick’s Mills, Douglas or you can email it direct to ronniemcginn@eircom.net. If possible keep your poem to 20 lines. Douglas Community Association Planning Permission for our expansion plans at the new centre at Church Rd. has been formally approved! We are currently applying for Fire & Disability access certification. We will then prepare tender documentation and iniatiate tendering porocess in Sept. and hope to commence construction Dec 2012/Jan 2013. This is great news indeed as we have been planning this project on paper for a long time and to finally get to this stage is like having cleared an enormous hurdle. Paudie Martin, project coordinator, has worked tirelessly to get to this stage, and he consulted with all the service providers. With the help of Chairman Billy Coleman and the DCA Committee, he will be pushing the project ahead over the next months.

Tidy Towns Concert Thanks to everyone who attended the recent Tidy Towns Fund-Raising Concert at Rochestown Park Hotel. With a very full house, it was deemed one of the best night’s entertainment ever and great value for money at €10 a ticket! It was nice to see the support that the people of Douglas gave to our very hard-working Tidy Towns group. The variety, quality and entertainment-value of the performances were superb. Sean

O’Shea, who presented each of the performing groups, kept the audience in fits of giggles with his witty anecdotes. Pianist, David O’Sullivan, provided wonderful back-up music for the performances – his boundless energy and musical talent infecting the audience. Douglas Church Choir opened the concert with their four-part choir, sopranos, altos, tenors and base, conducted by Patricia Kelleher, and sang the most beautiful spiritual melodies such as Irish Blessing, I’ll go in the Strength of the Lord and Down in the River to Pray. Tenor Dan Twomey of RTE’s “Ireland – the Voice” fame, looked great and sang wonderfully. Wellknown international singer, Soprano Fiona O’Reilly, had the hair standing on the back of our necks with her amazing voice. Dan and Fiona sang ‘Time to say Good-Bye’ together and brought the house down! After his performance, Dan said he is available for funerals, etc. Sean O’Shea advised him jokingly to use a different marketing approach, and to say he was available for ‘weddings’, etc.! Good advice for such a fine talent, in his prime! The Carrigtwohill Gospel Choir waved and swayed as they sang lovely soulful numbers, moving with the spiritual message of their songs. The Choristors group sang very light-

For the grand finale, a newly-formed band, Re Nua, lead by Tony Breen, they included guitar players (Tony, Liam Shanahan and John Hartnett), drummer (Connie O’Callaghan), accordian player (Liam Maloney), and joined by David O’Sullivan on keyboard. They palyed a great selection of traditional and popular songs and supplied words to everyone in the audience. It was a real Community Sing-Along and was just pure magic, getting the crowd swaying to tunes like great favourite, Nial Diamond’s ‘Sweet Caroline’! I must say people were gobsmacked that they got such a night’s entertainment, in their own town, at Rochestown Park Hotel. Just one more word to thank the hotel management and their staff for all their help with making the event a resounding success. To be repeated next year? Possibly!!! Thank you one and all for making it such a terrific and memorable night. One more mention, it was great to see Michael O’Hanlon arrive with his camera, back in action again, he took fabulous that appeared in last week’s Post. The benefits of the funds raised will be noticed in Douglas Village and its environs as Tidy Towns continue their planting programme and general maintenance at various focal points throughout the area for all of us to enjoy, and to up our chances in this year’s Tidy Towns Competition. Douglas is on it’s way back up!

Ulcerative colitis Ulcerative colitis, an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that causes chronic inflammation of the digestive tract, is characterized by abdominal pain and diarrhea. Ulcerative colitis usually affects only the innermost lining of your large intestine (colon) and rectum. It occurs only through continuous stretches of your colon, unlike Crohn’s disease, which occurs in patches anywhere in the digestive tract and often spreads deep into the layers of affected tissues.

Symptoms Ulcerative colitis symptoms can vary, depending on the severity of inflammation and where it occurs. For these reasons, doctors often classify ulcerative colitis according to its location.

Causes Like Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis causes inflammation and ulcers in your intestine. But unlike Crohn’s, which can affect the colon in various sections, ulcerative colitis usually affects one continuous section of the inner lining of the colon beginning with the rectum.

How do I handle mum’s Alzheimer’s?

No one is quite sure what triggers ulcerative colitis, but there’s a consensus as to what doesn’t. Researchers no longer believe that stress is the main culprit, although stress can often aggravate symptoms. Instead, current thinking focuses on the following possibilities: 1. Immune system. Some scientists think a virus or bacterium may trigger ulcerative colitis. The digestive tract becomes inflamed when your immune system tries to fight off the invading microorganism (pathogen). It’s also possible that inflammation may stem from an autoimmune reaction in which your body mounts an immune response even though no pathogen is present. 2 Heredity. Because you’re more likely to develop ulcerative colitis if you have a parent or sibling with the disease, scientists suspect that genetic makeup may play a contributing role.

Treatments and drugs The goal of medical treatment is to

reduce the inflammation that triggers your signs and symptoms. In the best cases, this may lead not only to symptom relief but also to longterm remission. Ulcerative colitis treatment usually involves either drug therapy or surgery. Doctors use several categories of drugs that control inflammation in different ways. But drugs that work well for some people may not work for others, so it may take time to find a medication that helps you. In addition, because some drugs have serious side effects, you’ll need to weigh the benefits and risks of any treatment.

Lifestyle and home remedies Sometimes you may feel helpless when facing ulcerative colitis. But changes in your diet and lifestyle may help control your symptoms and lengthen the time between flare-ups. Diet There’s no firm evidence that what you eat causes inflammatory bowel disease. But certain foods and beverages can aggravate your symptoms, especially during a flare-

up in your condition. It’s a good idea to try eliminating from your diet anything that seems to make your signs and symptoms worse.

Stress Although stress doesn’t cause inflammatory bowel disease, it can make your signs and symptoms much worse and may trigger flare-ups. Stressful events can range from minor annoyances to a move, job loss or the death of a loved one. When you’re stressed, your normal digestive process can change, causing your stomach to empty more slowly and secrete more acids. Stress can also speed or slow the passage of intestinal contents. It may also cause changes in intestinal tissue itself. Although it’s not always possible to avoid stress, you can learn ways to help manage it. Blackrock/ Mahon Community News A Visit to Spike Island with Dennis Coffey Mr Eamon O’Cuiv officially handed over Spike Island to Cork County Council on what was regarded as a momentous and symbolic occasion. The Minister raised the tricolour over the uninhabited Island’s Fort Mitchell, to a rapturous applause from dignitaries and invited guests. Reminiscence of the occasion on the same date & month of August 11th 1938, The minister’s Grand Father and members of the Irish Government, along with Minister for Defence, Oscar Traynor looked-on with pride as the tricolour was raised when the last British soldiers & many naval ships left the island for the last time. Many people have encouraged me to explain & explore a little bit more about Spike Island’s unique history. I must say a lot has been documented by others about the Island’s rich history, but there is always a bit more. Over

the past two years we have broadcast various historical documents on radio, which had a fantastic interaction from the public. We have been exploring historical islands and sites since 1987. My own passion for archaeological & historical sites led me to the great megalithic tomb of Newgrange in Co Meath. It was a momentous & enchanting sight. I drew a rich knowledge of wisdom & faith from that experience. Spike Island in the shadow of other ecclesial Irish sites & monasteries where pilgrims go which are known to many as holy islands. Spike Island uncovered the eyes of archaeologists & historians who have come to believe that around 630a.d. Saint Carthage miraculous cured local people of their ailments. A king also benefited from this miracle. A monastery & enclosure was built on the island in honour of the saint’s memory. A famous cathedral at Lismore, Co Waterford, is named

family or homeland again. Massive fortifications were built on the Island. Martello Towers were also built by the British on the mainland in Cobh during the Napoleonic wars.

I took the opportunity presented to me in October 1986 to visit Spike Island by boat & I discovered that my historical knowledge was very basic indeed. There are many events synonymous with Spike Island’s history; such as the unfortunate convicts who were transported by our colonial masters to faraway lands. Some were never to see their

Spike Island has surpassed all my expectations, its absolutely incredible history to explore in greater detail in the near future presents a new challenge to catalogue & improve my knowledge. Until the next time I hope you enjoyed this article. Please keep Ireland litterfree. Denis Coffey

Top 10 Chart

In The Loop with Peter Bowles D.J.

This Saturday night at 9pm Kiwi comic, Danny Dowling, takes to the City Limits stage. Admission is €15. Danny has been tearing rooms apart with his version of life in Ireland and a GAA fan that you won’t forget. He was the winner of Come Dine With Me Ireland with the highest score in the series mainly due to 250 custard pies. Danny has started strongly in 2011 working with Tommy Tiernan, The Rubberbandits and touring with Glenn Wool. He was hand picked for the 2010 & 2011 Electric Picnic Main Comedy Tent and reviewed as “The best début at one of Ireland’s best Festivals”. Aslan have cancelled their scheduled 30th anniversary show in the Tallaght Stadium which was due to take place on June 30th, with Kaiser Chiefs and Royseven as support. Last week, the step had been taken to reduce the price of the concert tickets by almost 50%, to enable fans in difficult economic circumstances to purchase tickets, however the move did not yield enough sales to enable the concert to go ahead. Speaking about the cancellation, Billy McGuinness from Aslan said: “We are all devastated, making the decision to cancel the show has been incredibly difficult and we are truly sorry to the thousands of fans that were looking forward to celebrating with us on June 30th. It’s a real sign of the times, we did everything we could to make it work. It costs a lot to run stadium shows, you look around and many of the big shows seem to have difficulty selling these days. People just don’t have the spare cash. We tried our best but it just wasn’t to be. We’d have loved to have celebrated our 30 years in such a huge way, but we will find another occasion to do this with the Aslan fans.” A spokesperson for Raglane added “We regret the inconvenience and disappointment for all those who purchased tickets.” All tickets should be returned to point of purchase for a full refund. Lady Gaga has taken to the stage in Auckland, New Zealand and spoken about the backlash from Madonna on her recent tour. Earlier this month, the 53 year-old singer began her MDNA tour in Tel Aviv, where she performed a mashup of her song Express Yourself with Lady Gaga’s Born This Way, seemingly fuelling tension between the two singers, as critics have

14 - Thur 14 June ’12

constantly compared the two songs. “It sometimes makes people feel better about themselves to put other people down or make fun of them or maybe make mockery of their work. And that doesn’t make me feel good at all. That just makes me feel like I’m not being a good human being” Lady Gaga said recently on stage. In a video recorded at her Auckland show, the 26 year-old singer is filmed giving a speech to the audience mid-way through one of her songs. Speaking about the criticism that she received since the two songs were compared, she added “I learned so much this year about that, I learned a lot about negativity, I’ve learned a lot about people trying to tear you down”. The singer concluded her speech by stating that things have changed over the years, “Can’t I believe in being ‘born this way’?...Things are really different than they were 25 years ago, and that’s what makes ‘Born this Way’ so relevant for me...We’re socially in a different place and it’s OK, we don’t have to all slice and hate each other anymore. Lady Gaga suffered a concussion when a dancer accidentally hit her on the head with a metal pole during her final New Zealand show. The Poker Face singer was performing her hit Judas at Auckland’s Vector Arena when the accident left her “seeing stars”. Gaga later told fans: “I wanna apologize if I’m rambling tonight, but not sure if you noticed, I hit my head earlier and I think I may have a concussion. “Don’t worry though, I’m gonna finish the show.” The singer’s makeup artist Tara Savelo took to Twitter after the show to assure fans that the star was in good shape, writing: “Gaga has a concussion but she is going to be okay. She wants u to know she loves u. I’m taking care of her. Can’t believe she finished the show.” Sure god love her! Take That, George Michael and Emile Sandé have all been confirmed to perform at the closing ceremony of the upcoming London 2012 Olympic Games, concluding on August 12th. George Michael will make his stage comeback at the event, after suffering from pneumonia last November and cancelling all scheduled tour dates. The press reports that the organisers wanted a variety of performers, with international appeal, to showcase British music over the past five decades.

This week’s Teazer

“Let’s go under the sea” said Johnny excitedly. “ But I can’t swim his father protested. “ You don’t have to” said Johnny. “ But we’ll get wet” continued the reluctant parent. “Oh, no we won’t” said Johnny. “There are sharks down there” said his father. “ I know – I’ve always wanted to see real sharks” said Johnny. “Won’t you be scared?” inquired the father. “Of course not they won’t harm us” Johnny told his dad where he meant to go. “OK you win” said the relieved parent. “Let’s go” said Johnny. Johnny and his Dad are not going diving, or taking a trip in a glassbottomed boat. So how are they going under the sea without coming to any harm?

Old Silas Greenfield died and left each of his grandchildren the same bequest. Sam spent all his having a good time. Dave wasted his and Suzy used hers wisely. The old man had been determined to treat the grandchildren equally, and in a way he did, but each got a different sum of money. How?

Family Ties with Geraldine Blake

Geriatric And Able I took up Gaelic Football a few years ago after we moved to Hong Kong. I had no exposure to GAA sports while growing up: my parents followed golf and rugby, my brothers were West Ham supporters and I was the couch potato. My husband, being from Kerry, is of course, a rabid follower of Gaelic football. He played it socially when we lived in Singapore – his team was called ‘The Father Teds’ - and took it up again when we moved to Hong Kong. When the 2003 Asian Gaelic Games were held in Hong Kong, it was on a sunny weekend in early October which ensured a good attendance and a great atmosphere. The family enjoyed the weekend immensely but my husband maintained that, “Nothing beats being a participant.” That thought stayed in my head when the following Christmas, I met the ladies team at the GAA Christmas party and they persuaded me to come down to training. I only made the decision to go once I was absolutely sure that they really were desperate for players, and I also thought it would do no harm to the marriage to have a common pursuit with my husband. I changed my mind several times but I reluctantly honoured my promise and turned up for training on the first Sunday in the New Year. I wanted to run away. I felt such a fraud: who was I kidding? Most women in their forties play civilised sports like play golf and tennis. They don’t go

hurtling around muddy pitches, flinging themselves after balls and bawling out the ref. But I swallowed my misgivings and plodded on. The grandly named 2004 All China Championships in Shanghai was coming up. Hubbie signed up for it immediately and he put my name down too. In the weeks leading up to the tournament, we received daily reminders by email to get our Chinese visa. I dutifully submitted my passport to the travel agency and when I offered to do the same for Hubbie, he waved me away with “Sure, I’m up and down to China all the time. Of course, I have a visa.” However, when the group met on the Friday evening at Hong Kong airport, it was only when he was at the check-in counter that he realised that his visa had expired a week ago. I looked at him in disbelief and said “I’m only going because of you!” Michele from Balbriggan put her arm around me and said “Don’t worry, we’ll look after you but you are going to get an awful slagging over losing your husband.” Our first game was against Shanghai. Katrina, our captain said “First things first, who wants to be in goal?” I said nothing. Silently I wished that it was me but told myself that I mustn’t be selfish. When she asked again and still got no response, I nonchalantly shrugged my shoulders and said, “I’ll give it a go.” The relief on her face told me that clearly nobody ever wants to go in goal.

CAROUSEL HIRE

A Carousel is GREAT FUN

My ‘technique’ was to close my eyes, hold up my hands and rush out at the oncoming opponent. It wasn’t pretty but it worked. After the first ‘save’, Katrina looked at me surprised and said, “Well done!” It was then that I had my Oprah ‘Yes!’ moment’ and from then on I was completely hooked on Gaelic football. I never missed a single training session if I could help it. If Hubbie was running late, I left him behind. At the Sunday afternoon sessions, we would bring down the kids too and sometimes, my 12-year old son would play with us. After one such session, Serena from Co. Meath came up to me and said “Where else would you see it - a mother and son playing on the same team!” The following October, I barely squeaked onto the squad for the 2004 Asian Games. I was a Sub and only got to play for a total of four minutes in the entire tournament. I was fine with that as they were far better players than me available for selection. I suspect that I was only picked because of my 100% attendance record. However, to make my selection for 2005 more secure, I started to attend the twice weekly circuit training sessions as well as normal training. I made the team. I was even promoted out of the goal to a defender. I have no interest in scoring. I have no interest in getting the ball either; I just want to deny my opponents from getting it too. Despite all the training sessions, I couldn’t do a solo to save my life. When I play, I adopt my ‘Jack Russell’ mode i.e. I doggedly and relentlessly chase down my opponent. I was rewarded for my efforts when during the semifinal; a forward from the Shanghai A team kicked me in the shins out of sheer frustration. I was so high on adrenalin; I barely felt it at the time. When the

bruise came up it was magnificent, it stretched from knee to toe and I wore it like a badge of honour. In the 2006 All-China Championships, I was made Captain of the Ladies B team and I hated every minute of it. They only told me of my exalted position the night before the games, when it was too late to go back home. I am not a leader. I am a happy little camper born to follow others. Trying to motivate people and having to listen to their drivel, when I have my own nerves to deal with, is not one of my natural ‘strengths’. I slept badly that night as I struggled with the weight of responsibility that was thrust upon me. I was still on edge the next morning and I even lost my appetite for breakfast. At the warm ups before the games, one of my defenders, Sarah, who has all the grace of a bag of cement on legs, kept making comments like, “Cheer up, Geraldine, we are only going to get crucified”, and, “Give Geraldine the ball somebody before she cries.” I had to bite my tongue because I couldn’t afford to alienate any of my players, even ones as useless as she was. Another lady on the team, who had only travelled up with her player husband so she could have a weekend break away, got roped in because we were so desperate for a fresh pair of legs. She told me in apologetic tones that she wasn’t very fit. “What do you mean you’re not fit”, I barked at her, “sure, don’t you run around after four kids all day.” “Yes”, she replied, “but they don’t run that far.” We were annihilated in every game and it was the only time I ever cried playing my beloved Gaelic football. I still love GAA but now that I’m back in Cork, it’s time to hang my boots up and retire. Sure, who’d have me!?

Home & G arden Things to do This Week As usual we try to give you a few ideas on what might need doing in your garden this week. Not everything in this article may apply to your garden - but there might be something, if not this week maybe next week.

Flower Garden Deadhead basket and container plants, and start feeding regularly. Feed Michaelmas daisies and thin the stems if necessary. Cut sweet peas frequently, and do not let any blooms run to seed. Transplant biennials sown under glass, 8cm (3in) apart in a nursery bed. Inspect hellebores for aphids, which can affect next year’s growth if left.

Kitchen Garden Thin apples and pears when surplus fruits have finished falling naturally. Stop cutting asparagus and feed plants with general fertiliser. Estimate when first early potatoes will be ready, and soak about 2 weeks beforehand to boost crops. Plan winter crops while there is still time to sow them. In hot weather sow lettuce direct in the afternoon, and cover with damp newspaper for 24 / 48 hours to keep seeds cool. Thin peaches and nectarines to about 15cm (6in) apart.

Lawns & Hedges Trim lonicera and privet hedges regularly. Use a rotary mower to cut

the wiry stalks of plantains and other large weeds.

Greenhouse Sow busy lizzies for houseplants in the winter; cut back in March and take cuttings for bedding. Start harvesting cucumbers while still small, to encourage further cropping. Sow cacti and succulent seeds in gritty compost. Start leaving vents open at night regularly, or install automatic vent openers to cope with fluctuations. Most cacti can be stood outdoors now, in a bright sheltered position.

Water Garden Check ponds regularly in hot weather in case they need topping up. Net green algae if it builds up, and add to the compost heap. Mulch the bog garden with straw or leafmould to conserve moisture, or spread pebbles and coarse grit as a mulch.

Sonia O’Sullivan to compete in her first Triathlon in Cork Big-hearted Olympic medallist launches TriMonkstown RUN WITH SONIA is the message from the Irish Heart Foundation and Monkstown Amenity Association, hosts of the 2nd annual TriMonkstown sprint distance event in Cork on 17 June which has attracted star competitor, Olympic and world medallist Sonia O’Sullivan. Famous for competing in 5,000m events, Sonia is up for a new challenge taking on her FIRST EVER triathlon at TriMonkstown in her home county which includes a 750m swim, 20km cycle and 100m sprint. The well-loved Irish athlete said: “Although I have been hibernating in the Australian winter, I have been keeping myself busy training for my first ever triathlon. TriMonkstown was an easy choice for me - just across the water from Cobh set in the beautiful Cork harbour, followed by a unique cycle onto Haulbowline Island and a scenic run alongside Cork harbour. I have been training three times a week in the swimming pool and enjoyed some great hilly bike rides. I just hope my run leg doesn’t let me down! I am really looking forward to getting out and joining in the fun on June 17th.” According to Triathlon Ireland, registration organisers for TriMonkstown, triathlons are one of the fast growing sports in Ireland. Last year, more than 20,000 people of all ages in Ireland participated in a triathlon. Anne Riordan from the Irish Heart Foundation’s Cork Office said: “We are delighted to have Sonia O’Sullivan competing in our event and we hope it will encourage more people to take part for the chance to compete against an Irish sporting legend. At the Irish Heart Foundation we work hard to

promote physical activity which is an important risk factor for heart disease and stroke. Being active can halve the risk of heart disease in adults. So come on, register now for TriMonkstown on 17 June for your chance to beat Sonia! Every registration raises a donation for the Irish Heart Foundation and the Monkstown Amenity Association.” Oonagh Hegarty Chairperson of the Monkstown Amenity Association explained that she represents a group of local volunteers working to enhance the amenities in the picturesque village of Monkstown. Their goal is to upgrade the children’s playground and park on the Glen Road. She said: “With Sonia taking part it will bring this very important fundraising event on to a new level and hopefully encourage more support for our efforts to give children a safe place to play and be active.” This year’s event is sanctioned by Triathlon Ireland and participants can register on www.triathlonireland. com. The route includes a 750m swim followed by a 20km cycle taking athletes on to the Naval Base on Haulbowline Island, offering a unique perspective of the Cork coastline. Finishing off with challenging run along Scotsman’s road with a spectacular view of Cork Harbour on to the river front back to Monkstown. For supporters and families, there will be entertainment and music with the local Sailing Club and navy providing some off-shore colour to the event. Register now for TriMonkstown with Triathlon Ireland: individuals (€50) and teams of 3 (€145) see www. triathlonireland.com . For further information contact Anne Riordan Irish Heart Foundation on 086 8520199 or go to www.trimonkstown.ie

The Euro’s are finally underway, and Russia have set the pace with a scintillating display to beat the Czech Republic 4-1 in Wroclaw. A brace from Alan Dzagoev, with Shirokov and Pavlyuchenko also on target for the Russians, and Pilar replying for the Czechs. In Group A’s other game, hosts Poland were held to a 1-1 draw with Greece. Manchester United target Robert Lewandowski scored the opener for the Poles before Salpangidis levelled for Greece. Both teams ended with 10 men as Papastathopoulos was controversially sent off in the first half before Arsenal keeper Szczesny was also sent off in the second half. In Group B, there was a big shock as Denmark defeated one of the tournament favourites Holland 1-0 in Kharkiv. Krohn-Delhi’s 24th minute strike was enough to see of a below par Dutch side. With Germany beating a resilient Portugal side by the same scoreline thanks to a late Mario Gomez header - it leaves the Dutch with an uphill struggle to qualify. In Group C, in the early kick off, Spain came from behind to earn a point against Italy in a 1-1 draw. Substitute Di Natale gave the Italians the lead in the 60th minute, but it was short lived as Fabregas levelled just 4 minutes later. Both teams wasted good chances to win the game. Moving on to Ireland, a poor performance led to a 3-1 loss against Croatia. It was the manner of the defeat that was most disappointing as for a team that conceded only 4 goals in 12 games, we conceded 3 in 48 minutes - with the goals coming at the worst possible times. We couldn’t have got off to a worse start as we went behind after only 3 minutes, and after working hard to score a deserved equaliser, we gifted them a second goal just before half time. Fair enough, it looks like there could have been a foul on Ward but if you slice the ball across your own box at schoolboy level then you would expect to be punished let alone at the highest level! Whatever Trappatoni said at half time didn’t seem to work either as we never got going again after the break and went further behind minutes after the restart. Lapses of concentration contributed to conceding soft goals and overall it’s fair to say that we were well beaten by a strong Croatian side. Trappatoni has often come under criticism from Ireland fans for strange selections and tactics, and his decision not to bring on James McClean for the ineffective Aiden McGeady at a time when we were being overrun in midfield adds to this. After the game, he announced that there will be changes for the Spain game so hopefully McClean will be given his chance. Looking at some other decisions made by the Italian, he has continued to

overlook players even though they have been impressing at club level. Wes Hoolahan in particular, has had a fantastic season at Norwich, helping them to an impressive 12th place finish in the Premier League. A man of the match performance against Arsenal in May led to his teammates publicly asking why he’s still being overlooked. A versatile player, he can play anywhere in midfield and also tuck in behind a central striker – something Ireland could benefit from against sides like Spain and Italy. Yet he wasn’t even considered for the standby list, opting to go for Championship players like Green, Keogh, and McShane instead. It’s also worth noting that third choice Birmingham City goalkeeper Jack Butland (who was on loan at Cheltenham last year) has made the England squad for the tournament. Compare this to Douglas’ very own Colin Doyle who is currently ahead of Butland in the pecking order at Birmingham, yet has once again been overlooked by Trappatoni. Instead, he’s opted for David Forde, a keeper who can’t even get in at Milwall. However, Trappatoni’s record for Ireland cannot be argued and he has guided us to our first tournament in 10 years while also bringing the country back up to 18th in the FIFA world rankings - our highest in years. Whatever his decisions, he’s done us proud and it’s time to get behind the boys in green for our crucial games against Spain and Italy! One to watch: Alan Dzagoev The 21 year old CSKA and Russian attacking midfielder - who already has over 20 caps, is considered one of Russia’s key players despite his age. With a mix of skill, blistering pace, vision, and an eye for goal, his undoubted ability has led to him being linked to a host of top clubs around Europe including Real Madrid and Man Utd. Ireland fans should remember him as his first international goal came in the Aviva in October 2010, and since then he has continued to impress for both club and country. Dzagoev is one of the brightest talents in world football yet is still relatively unknown to most fans. However, after his two goals in Russia’s opener against Greece, if he can continue this form then expect him to be a household name by the end of the tournament.

G.A.A. FOCUS By Pat Harrington Douglas Community Snippets from the local School Athletics by Steven Macklin and National Scene Street Leagues

Saturday 16th. June is Street leagues finals day – Football. This is an occasion not to be missed. Having watched at first hand the coaches putting the players through their paces I have been very impressed with the skills level. Structures are in place, which call for lots of coaching. This part of their young lives is an education in the different arts and skills of the game. The players will be encouraged to work hard; the work ethic is all about the team and not the individual, but most of all enjoyment. Some parents would be disappointed when their son’s development is not as obvious as others. My answer to that is to make sure the lads continue to practice, and to give them all the encouragement possible. No allIrelands are won at seven years of age. Another very important area is that players get real practical help from parents and older siblings where appropriate, and that the coach quietly explains the correct way to perform the skills. As I have said Saturday June 16th sees the finals of the Street Leagues so come on down and watch another generation of Douglas lads perform; you will not be disappointed. This year we celebrate the 125th anniversary of founding of our club and the occasion will be marked by specially struck medals being presented to the young players. All will meet in St. Columba’s school grounds at 1.00 p.m.

also made reference to the national league final. Yes, Kilkenny go to the edge – they sail close to the wind as it were. Cork try to play an open style of hurling, but The Cats are not going to accommodate the Rebels in this respect. Press comments are not going to change the way hurling is played. John needs to get on with the game and be prepared for a battle, which they clearly are not. I can remember in the late ‘80s the Cork football management whinging about the type of game played by Meath. A team must meet fire with fire. Moaning through the press gives their opponents a psychological boost. We in Cork don’t make the rules; it is time to toughen up!! Gaelic Football

I must confess I do concur with Pat Spillane’s criticism of modern day Gaelic football. As he says, thirteen men behind the ball is not attractive to watch, though many club and intercounty managers believe this is the way the game should be played. Tyrone and Armagh it was who introduced this monster (style of play), and it is the in style at present. Spillane recently came up with some interesting statistics: In 1976 he says there were 111 hand passes, in 2011 – 285 hand passes. The 2012 division 2 final between Tyrone and Kildare – 335 hand passes. Just one little matter, certainly to my eyes in 1976 in a lot of passes the ball was thrown. Marketing

Rebel Óg is the body that is now responsible for underage affairs. Recently I got a copy of a programme for an under 13 final. It was a beautifully prepared four-page glossy production. Well done to the above for the presentation of this fine programme.

I have always said that the G.A.A. does not market its games very well. This organisation of ours appears to take its audience for granted. We in Cork are the greatest example of thinking the man in the street will turn up simply because he always has. More than ever the games need greater exposure through local radio and newspapers.

Niall Scannell

Rebel Óg

I see where intercounty hurler John Gardiner has been quoted in a number of national newspapers regarding his comments on Kilkenny hurling. He stated that when Kilkenny are involved in games referees tend to ignore tackles that would be punished at other times. He went on to say that Kilkenny continuously go to the edge. The Na Piarsaigh man

Congratulations to Niall Scannell who captained the Irish under 21 rugby team to a famous victory over South Africa. Niall played at underage with Douglas G.A.A. as hurling goalkeeper. His grandfather Big Dónal O’Sullivan played full back on the Cork senior football team.
