Seen, Read + Heard by Michael O’Hanlon For the past few years I‘ve been a huge fan of the Waltz King Andre Rieu, the man who has introduced this music to a whole new audience aged from 8 to 80. His concerts outsell most of the big pop stars in the world. The purists are not too fond of Andre, but hey, if Andre can fill a 50,000 concert venue, who needs purists!!! (I call them musical snobs!!) Anyway, the ultimate concert venue for Andre is his home town area of Maastricht in Holland. It’s an open air show in the town square; the Mecca of a true fan. I’m on his e-mail listing and a few weeks ago an email from his site told me that a Cork cinema was going to show it live via satellite. I e-mailed the Omniplex in Mahon, five minutes later a reply – a few tickets left. I called down but the few had turned into a couple, only front seats left. That’s ‘crick in your neck’ viewing. I met the Manager Stephen Moroney who told me that there may be a second showing in another part of the complex. He took my number and promised to ring me. Three days later Stephen rang. The 2nd show was confirmed and two of the best seats were held for me (the second seat for my friend Ger O’Regan, another Andre fan.) I called down and met Assistant Manager Rob Corr. He showed me a plan of the seating and where we would be seated. I was impressed by the professionalism of everybody in the Mahon Point Omniplex. It’s a long time since I’ve met people such as the above mentioned who go the extra mile for their customers. I met an old friend and hurling legend John Horgan last week. I wondered how somebody so gentle and soft spoken could have been a fierce Cork hurling star defender, but the memories came flooding back of the blond hair and the last man standing in defence. The 60s were magic. John is now and has been a Driving Instructor for many years. Some time ago one of my daughters needed driving lessons. I called John and the lessons were arranged. I rang her a few weeks later and asked how it went, she replied “Dad, John’s a gentleman”. Check out John’s advert in the classified section. He didn’t let Cork down, he won’t let you down. I was saddened to hear that my one-time school teacher and old friend Gerry Dunne from the South Douglas Road had passed away recently. The memories came flooding back. As a child I had gone to the Model School in Anglesea Street. It’s now a Court House. To a certain extent it was also a Court House when I went there, children being beaten, in fear of going to school. I learnt nothing there; we were trained monkeys, beaten into submission until we were programmed into zombies.

It was nothing compared to the sexual abuse suffered by children in the Institutions, at least we got to go home at 3.30 every day. The next school was St. Kieran’s College on Camden Quay. There was a bit of violence there also, if one didn’t know the answer to a question, one was beaten. I remember being sent out with classmates to Glasheen knocking on doors trying to sell Fainne pins to householders for half a crown. I got lost and ran home to the security of Blackrock Road!!! The final school was the Cork School of Commerce, a mixed school for teenagers and no violence! It was before it’s time. Mr. Kennedy, reading from a Frank O’Connor novel, putting on different Cork accents for the characters in • Gerry Dunne the books; Mr. Wool who taught us Irish; he didn’t like the word ‘thanks’ and soccer. He would say “Go raibh mile maith agait” and he continued, “Why don’t you say armoured cars instead of tanks?” and soccer? Once again he’d say “How can you play football with your head?” And then there was Gerry Dunne who taught us how to type on the old Remington and Brother typewriters. At Christmas time there was a party with students and teachers interacting, and Gerry Dunne on piano. The ‘Comm’ was a great school. Gerry’s mother played the piano, Gerry played with a Jazz and Swing Band in his younger days in Waterford. His son Cathal still plays all over the place from Miami to Kinsale. His daughter Geraldine played cello with Makem & Clancy, and Liam Clancy and many more. Thanks for the music and the happy memories all those years ago, Gerry, R.I.P. Until next time if the Good Lord’s willing and the creeks don’t rise.

Historical Walking Tour of St. Finbarre’s Hospital On next Saturday, 23 June 2012, 12noon , Cllr Kieran McCarthy, in association with the Friends of St Finbarr’s Hospital, will give a public historical walking tour of the hospital grounds (meet at gate). The walk is free and takes place to support the summer bazaar of the Friends. Cllr McCarthy noted: “St Finbarr’s Hospital, the city’s former nineteenth century workhouse, serves as a vast repository of narratives, memories, symbolism, iconography and cultural debate”. When the Irish Poor Relief Act was passed on 31 July 1838, the assistant Poor Law commissioner, William J. Voules came to Cork in September 1838 to implement the new laws. Meetings were held in towns throughout the country. By 1845, 123 workhouses had been built, formed into a series of districts or Poor Law Unions, each Poor Law Union containing at least one workhouse. The cost of poor relief was met by the payment of rates by owners of land and property in that district. In 1841 eight acres, 1 rood and 23 perches were leased to the Poor Law Guardians from Daniel B. Foley, Evergreen House, Cork. Mr. Foley retained an acre, on which was Evergreen House with its surrounding gardens, which fronted South Douglas Road (now a vacant concrete space). The subsequent workhouse that was built on the leased lands was opened in December 1841. It was an isolated place, built beyond the City’s toll house and toll gates. The Douglas Road workhouse was also one of the first of over 130 workhouses to be designed by the Poor Law Commissioners’ architect George Wilkinson.

Summer Family Festival at Ballyseedy this Saturday! Family run business, Ballyseedy Home and Garden, at Fota Retail Park, Carrigtwohill, Cork, is celebrating its 1st birthday this weekend, with an amazing festival for all the family! In aid of the Children’s Leukaemia Association, Ballyseedy is celebrating its birthday by inviting families to join them for a barbeque and fun and games for the whole family on Saturday 23rd June from 12pm. Live band, The Roaring 40s and Red FM’s outside broadcast will kick off the action packed festival at 12 midday. There will be a barbeque, train rides, face painting, bouncing castle, fairground games, a carousel, pottery making demonstrations and balloon making for children. Parents can peruse the market stalls and as an extra special birthday surprise, there will be an animal road show and pony rides on the day too!

With DJ Philip Bourke playing tunes from 2pm- 5pm, the event promises to be a wonderful day of fun and entertainment where families are free to explore the store and garden centre. With an outside broadcast from Red FM there too, there will be lots of fantastic prizes to give away all day long! Ballyseedy The 30,000 sq ft home and garden centre at Ballyseedy opened its doors last June, 2011, and has a fantastic range of concessions such as Meadows and Byrne, Blarney Woollen Mills and Farrell and Brown, not to mention a spectacular garden centre boasting an impressive array of plants and flowers. Ballyseedy Home and Garden in Tralee has also recently been awarded Five Stars by Bord Bia under the Garden Centre category, the only one in Munster. It also plays host to a Restaurant and Cafe run by

the team synonymous with the iconic Jacobs on the Mall restaurant. Ballyseedy is run by mother and son team Bernie Falvey and Nathan McDonnell. Bernie started the original Ballyseedy garden centre 20 years ago just outside Tralee, and has overseen the expansion since then. Nathan McDonnell, a qualified horticulturist, joined the team to assist with the huge development, which has been successful since its inception in December 2007.

Ballinlough Community News With Mary Cremin Liam Towler honoured by Lord Mayor Liam Towler of Pic-De-Jer Park, Ballinlough was honoured by the Lord Mayor as he received a ‘Civic Award’. Lord Mayor Cllr. Terry Shannon said he was honouring Liam for his commitment and work in the Ballinlough Community Association and to the people of Ballinlough for the last thirty four years. Liam is a native of Blackrock village, from an early age he had an interest in Sport, he played with Ringmahon Rangers F.C. Liam came to live in Ballinlough in 1965. He got involved in Ballinlough Community Association in February 1978, as a representative of Ballinlough Rovers A.F.C. Liam was involved in the setting up of the Senior Citizens Committee in1984. He was a member of the Executive committee, and served his time as Chairperson on it. Liam was elected Chairperson of Ballinlough Community Association on three different occasions. The Indoor Bowls was formed in 1990 by the Senior Citizens committee. Arising out of that the Ballinlough Community Association Indoor Bowls was set up in 2000.

For many years the main fund raising for the Community Association was the ‘300 club’ every month Liam collected from the 100 members he had on his card. Liam is very supportive of all Youth activities, he supported the Summer Recreation Scheme, Ballinlough Youth Clubs, and Ballinlough Community Games. Liam would like to pay tribute to his wife Ann, daughters Olive and Marcella for their support to him through all the years. He would also like to thank the staff of Corporate Affairs in the City Hall for organising the event. The members of Ballinlough Community Association congratulate Liam on his great achievement, it was well deserved.

First and foremost it’s important to have your tyres checked – your tyres are your most important safety feature as they physically meet the road you are driving on. Equally important are your brakes – these should be checked regularly. Also, for night-driving it’s imperative that all your lights are working. The most startling difference when driving in Europe is the obvious one – you will need to drive on the righthand side of the road. But before you board the ferry to leave Ireland it is important to be mindful of the following. You will also need to have your headlights refocused for RH driving. This can be done by

An up-to-date satnav is an invaluable tool when driving abroad as it can give you audible directions – thus reducing your need to take your eyes of the road. It is important also to research the driving regulations in the country you intend travelling to, for example: In France, since July 1st 2008, it is required by law that both a highvisibility jacket and a warning triangle be carried in every car. In Germany, it is recommended that you drive with your dipped beam switched on at all times – even during the daytime. It is also prohibited to use Summer tyres when driving in Germany during the Winter. In Spain, if a driver wears prescription glasses, he/she should carry a spare pair in the car with them. As you can see, each individual country may have particular laws or recommendations that a foreign driver should be aware of. Every car should have a breakdown kit and a first aid kit. If you need help when driving in Europe being well prepared beforehand may well help you and save you time – especially if you are not fluent in any one of the

200 European languages! Having a repair kit, emergency triangle and a mini air compressor might be a huge advantage in getting you off the road and to somewhere where help can be more easily sought. For longer journeys in Europe it be worth noting that the wheel alignment set-up of your car might need to be changed to suit the road-camber of the RHD road system. New England native, Bradley Strahan is a member of the newly Mallow Poetry Group, and recently I received a signed copy of his masterful book “This Art of Losing”. His poetry is magnetic. Searching for words to give his writing a worthy description, on the back cover I found these comments from Susanna Roxman, author of “Broken Angels” and “Imagining Seals.” “Bradley Strahan is a poet whose work unites what you may term American energy—including a keen curiosity about the world— and a certain quiet European sensitivity. He has an unerring knack of describing townscapes, seashores, and other places so that you feel you have visited them yourself. He loves words and handles them with great awareness of their magic. And he possesses an artist’s eye for the telling of detail as well as a profound understanding of the symbolic importance of color. In some ways the verbal equivalent of an Impressionist. Strahan always avoids the superficial, the obvious moral to draw. Instead, he hints at hidden depths of powerful emotions. Garden Fete St. Finbarr’s Hospital, on Saturday 23rd June 2012, the friends of the residents of St. Finbarr’s Hospital are holding their Annual Garden Fete in the Hospital Grounds on the Douglas Road, between 1.30pm and 4.30pm. There will be musical entertainment by Joe Desmond all afternoon with Irish Dancing from the Miah Walsh School of Dancing. Another feature will be the Gold Wing Club of Ireland with their Motor Bikes. Among the stalls will be garden produce, baking, books, toys and many more, in addition to fast food and ice cream vendors. Cllr Kieran McCarthy will be doing historical walks of the hospital starting at 12noon. The residents always look forward to these events

If you and your toddler would enjoy the company of other parents and toddlers, come along to the centre on Wednesday mornings, between 10 a.m. – 11.30 a.m. in the preschool rooms. Parents or whoever is responsible for the toddler on the day have a cup of coffee or tea and a chat while their toddlers play in a child friendly environment. Christ King Students Sign-Off Year With Annual Prizegiving As Christ King Girls School is one of Cork’s largest, there is a wealth of talent amongst its student population and the Annual Prizegiving ceremony is an ideal opportunity to celebrate the achievements of students who excelled in their fields. Teachers and management are very proud to have worked with all of these students and the school community wish them continued success at the ceremony, where Ms Kate McQuinn presided as Master of Ceremonies. Prizegiving was opened by a Quintet playing the glorious music of S. S. Wesley. The guest of honour was past pupil, Fiona O’Reilly, a very talented soprano, well- known, nationally and internationally for her many opera roles and wonderful oratorical performances. Fiona spoke about the fun she had as a student at Christ King and encouraged her audience to follow their dreams and to persevere. Another returning guest was Claire O’Loughlin, who achieved the Best Leaving Certificate Award for 2011, and at the ceremony two Students, Aishling McDonald and Kelly Dwyer were congratulated on achieving 11 As in their Junior Certs in 2011. For the first time an ASDAN award was presented to the very popular Jennie O’Halloran. Youth leadership programme, Meitheal, continues to flourish and the ten Fifth years who gave so generously of their time this year were honoured.

A long list of outstanding Junior and Senior sports prizes were awarded to dedicated, talented and hard working students. As usual, the Students Council did excellent work in the school throughout the year and a special mention was made of Head Girl, Ciara O’Regan and Deputy, Niamh Ferguson. Sports Person of the Year 2012 went to Cathy Dunlea for her passionate and dedicated contribution to organising teams, games and dance. The prize for academic excellence, Student of the Year, went to Caroline Murnane. Nominations for this prize were, Jessica Mac Sweeney, Janica Zambrycha, Áine Collins and Emer Byrne. Nominations for Outstanding Contribution Award were Molly Forsythe, Niamh Ferguson and Valerie Keating. The award was won by Niamh Ferguson both for her commitment to study and her very valuable participation in many areas of school life. Principal Ms Mary Keane paid tribute to all those who won prizes, their families and teachers at the end of the night. Hay Fever Hay fever, also called allergic rhinitis, causes cold-like signs and symptoms such as a runny nose, congestion, sneezing and sinus pressure. But unlike a cold, hay fever isn’t caused by a virus. Hay fever is caused by an allergic response to outdoor or indoor allergens, such as pollen, dust mites or pet dander. Hay fever is common — it affects more than 1 in 5 people. Some people have symptoms year-round. For others, hay fever symptoms get worse at certain times of the year, usually in the spring, summer. Capital Grant for Douglas Childcare facility very welcome Fine Gael TD for Cork South Central, has welcomed the announcement by the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Frances Fitzgerald, that €6 million in capital grant funding has been allocated to 290 childcare settings throughout Ireland, seven of which are located in Cork South Central. “I am very pleased that today’s announcement from Minister Fitzgerald includes Douglas Community Preschool and Playgroup. This community group which operates out of Douglas Community Centre and provides a valuable resource is to receive €37,358. In total seven childcare facilities in Cork South Central will receive funding, which will address a host of issues facing these facilities such as remedial, maintenance and renovation work, as well equipment for early education and childcare services. In total the amount being allocated to childcare facilities in Cork South Central is over €117,000. Families and children in Ballyphehane, Crosshaven, Douglas, Mahon and Monkstown who use these facilities will benefit from this allocation of funding. “With the country’s increasingly high birth rate, there is a huge demand for childcare facilities operating in a safe and secure environment which provides children with the best care and education. More than 4,394 childcare facilities applied for this funding under the Capital Grants for Childcare Scheme with an average application sought for nearly €27,000. “The competition for these grants was very intense and I am delighted that Cork has been well represented in the overall awarding of funding. As a county Cork has received over €930,000 in this allocation. The aim of this investment is to support the services that childcare facilities offer for disadvantaged children and communities. Successful applicants represented the most complete, coherent and precise cases for funding.”

Know Your Rights: Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance Question: What is the Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance? Answer:

The Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance (BTSCFA) helps you to meet the cost of uniforms and footwear for children going to school or college. In 2012 the age limits changed, and BTSCFA is now paid to children aged from 4 to 22. They must be aged between 4 and 22 on or before 30 September of the year that you apply for the payment. Children aged between 18 and 22 must be in full-time education in a recognised school or college. The rates have also changed in 2012. The allowance paid for each eligible child aged between 4 and 11 on or before 30 September 2012 is €150. The allowance paid for children aged 12-22 on or before 30 September 2012 is €250. You (the parent or guardian) must be getting certain social welfare payments or payments for training, employment schemes or adult education for at least 6 weeks between 1 June and 30 September. The scheme operates from June to September each year.

Carrigaline Community News Ballygarvan National School Olympic Week The Cork Sports Partnership Network assisted the Parents Association with seeking advice and support from all the various sporting organisations. The Olympic week has proved so popular that on Wednesday the 13th of June, Olive Loughnane, World Championship Silver medallist and representing Ireland in her 4th Olympic games in London 2012, visited the school to see the children and encourage them to participate in the fun and games of the Olympic week. Olympic week culminates with a school sports day on this Friday the 22nd June, where all the children will receive their “Olympic” medals!

Pastoral Changes Changes in the Carrigaline ‘Pastoral area will result in the Parish of Passage West / Monkstown which also includes Shanbally and Ringaskiddy being transferred to join with Douglas / Rochestown and Frankfield. The Ballinhassig parish coming to join Tracton, Crosshaven and Carrigaline to form a new Carrigaline pastoral area.

Attended Eucharistic Congress Over 100 pilgrims from the Carrigaline Pastoral area travelled to the Eucharistic Congress in Croke Park on Sunday last. Two coaches left Carrigaline on Sunday morning at 7.30 am, they stopped for breakfast at the Gandon Hotel, Emo, County Laois. A number of parishioners were already in Dublin attending the Congress during the week. All joined with thousands of pilgrims from all parts of Ireland and many from abroad for the Mass and closing ceremonies in Croke Park. The Carrigaline pilgrims were overjoyed to be present at such a historic an wonderful occasion. It will always live in their memories. The pilgrims were accompanied by Parish Priest Rev. Bertie O’Mahony and Fr John Newman and retired Arch Bishop Patrick Coveney.

Active Retired The members who attended the weekly gathering in the Parish Centre on Thursday last had a most enjoyable time line dancing with Frankie Brierley followed by a cup of tea and a chat. This Thursday popular Margaret Kelly from Phelan’s Pharmacy is back again to talk about skin care. She will give a demonstration of a facial make up. The following Wednesday 27th June CARA go on their final outing before the summer break. They overnight in Clane, Co Kildare and return home on a sightseeing tour the following day Thurs 28th via Kilkenny, Carlow Wesford wth dinner in Waterford and home.

Men’s Shed More Progress is reported from the Carrigaline Men’s Shed. Last Wednesday they took to the road and did their little bit for Tidy Towns when they cleaned all the roadside litter from Maryville Cross to Foster’s Cross. New benches are being constructed in the workshops and the men will be able to do woodwork and metal work in the weeks ahead. New steps and footpath have been laid to give safer access to the building while the entrance and surrounds have been cleaned and will be planted with shrubs and flowers. Opportunities are there for men who would like to take up gardening as a hobby, new raised gardens are ready to plant and the poly tunnel is also ready to go. Men can grow flowers fruit or vegetables for themselves, for others or grow them for charity. Men over 18 years of age are welcome to join the Men’s Shed. Carrigaline On C103 A Carrigaline group featured on the C103 programme ‘Round the Fire’ on Monday night last. They had singers and storytellers and were accompanied by members of the Owenabue Valley Traditional Group. However there are circumstances where people need access to high quality care in other settings. Nursing homes, Hospice, etc. Whatever the setting people want to live in a place that “Feels Like Home” and our system of health and community care is not complete until those needs are met. Supporting people to age well at home requires the right kind of planning, information and support to make the difference between Independence and Dependence for older people. Gardai are advising older people to report any suspicious activity around their homes in the wake of a number of attacks on isolated older people in their homes. Be sure you have the phone number of the local Garda Station. Write it down and keep it beside your phone and if you notice anything suspicious. use the number to contact Gardai. Older people are sometimes reluctant to call the guards for fear they might be seen to be wasting time reporting suspicious activities. But hopefully they help to prevent crimes of the type perpetrated against older people. Keep the names coming for “Young at Heart” book! Home & G arden Things to do This Week As usual we try to give you a few ideas on what might need doing in your garden this week. Not everything in this article may apply to your garden - but there might be something, if not this week maybe next week.

Flower Garden Deadhead roses regularly, except those producing hips, and give a midsummer feed of rose fertiliser. Tie in dahlia stems as they develop, and thin to 4-5 for extra large blooms. Cut down aquilegias and sweet rocket after flowering to prevent lavish selfseeding. Prune evergreen ceanothus after flowering, cutting back almost to the main branches. Take cuttings of osteospermums and Verbena rigida (V. venosa), both vulnerable to frost and damp later on.

Kitchen Garden Make a last sowing of peas and dwarf French beans for late crops. Protect cauliflowers from bight sunlight by breaking 2-3 leaves over the curds. Sow maincrop turnips for storing. Tuck straw under bush tomatoes and cucumbers to keep fruits clean. As crops are cleared, transplant brassicas to limed positions, and water in well. Sow savoy cabbages in a shaded nursery bed for late winter supplies.

Start using the largest self-blanching celery heads; earth or paper up traditional trench kinds. Sow chervil in a slightly shaded bed, in case plants bolt suddenly in hot weather. Sow a fast beetroot variety for baby beets in October.

Lawns & Hedges Mow lawns twice a week if necessary for a fine finish. Trim privet hedges regularly to maintain a neat outline. Green House Check greenhouse plants for watering daily all this month, and damp down regularly.

Euro 2012 by Mark Maher At the time of writing, Ireland (along with Sweden, Russia, Poland, Denmark and Holland) have unfortunately been eliminated from the tournament. Both Germany and Spain continue to impress, with the former maintaining their 100% record in the group stage (having also won every game in qualifying) and the latter showing the type of form that have made them World and European champions. Even though teams like France, England and Portugal have shown signs of improvement, the structure of the knockout phase draw looks like it could be a repeat of the 2008 final between the two. Along with Ireland, both Holland and Russia have had the most disappointing campaigns of the lot. The Dutch, in particular with star players like Van Persie, Robben and Sneijder were one of the favourites yet failed to register a single point. Russia, who started off with a fantastic 4-1 win over eventual group winners Czech Republic, failed to capitalize gaining only 1 point from 2 games to crash out. So moving on to Ireland, and there’s so many questions still left to be answered. Was it a disappointing campaign or just a reality check? Outclassed in the first 2 games, but is it that much of a disgrace to lose to the teams ranked 1st and 8th in the world? Look at the last campaign in 2008 when Spain won it and Croatia finished top of their group (ahead of Germany winning all 3 games in the process) - whereas we failed to even qualify. Once we made this year’s tournament, many fans expected us to get out of the group with our fighting spirit and heart alone, but this harsh lesson proved that these qualities can only bring you so far. To put things in perspective, against the Spanish they had the squad depth to bring on Fabregas, a player who broke records in his debut season at Barcelona. On the other hand we brought on Paul Green, a player who often looks out of his depth at Championship level! It will be interesting to see what happens after the Euro’s with Trapattoni and Robbie Keane likely to stay on for the World Cup qualifying campaign, but will Given, Dunne and Duff follow suit or will they decide to call it a day? Is it time to start looking to the future with the likes of McClean, McCarthy, Coleman, Clarke and Brady (players that could feature for Ireland over the next 10-15 years) - or are these youngsters even good enough? At this moment in time it’s hard to say but in order for these players to develop, Trapattoni has to start giving them a chance over the World Cup qualifying campaign. Germany are a good example of this, as they were going through their worst period in years just before the last campaign 2008. Then they made the decision to start fresh, completely rebuilding the under-age set up and giving the youngsters a

chance at senior level ahead of many experienced internationals. It looked like a gamble at the time, but it’s paid off as the likes of Ozil, Khedira, Neuer, and Goetze all made an instant impact. Also, many fans are against players that are not “Irish”, but shouldn’t players with Irish descent that are good enough have the right to be considered? Again, looking at the Germans both Podolski and Klose were born in Poland while Gomez, Ozil and Boateng have Spanish, Turkish and Ghanian descent respectively (Boateng’s brother Kevin Prince is even a Ghanian international) - yet they have all declared for Germany. Players like Kevin Nolan, Mark Noble and Jamie O’Hara could all make an impact at international level. Fair enough it could be argued that we should stick to our own but look at the likes of Kevin Kilbane, Sean St. Ledger and Liam Lawrence – all players that we have accepted as our own yet they are as Irish as the previous three mentioned. Our country’s politicians are looking to the Germans in order to save our economy, so should we be looking to them for their methods in football too? As I previously stated, so many questions…. One to watch: Yann M’Vila This week’s one to watch is talented 21 year old Rennes and France midfielder Yann M’Vila. This strong, energetic, and combative midfielder already has made over 110 appearances for his club and 20 caps for his country. It looks likely that Arsenal have won the race for his signature in a reported £16 million pound deal. With comparisons of Patrick Vieira and Claude Makelele, he could provide the backbone Arsenal have lacked since the departure of club legend Vieira. Strong in the tackle, excellent at incisive passes, the former regional cross country champion also has the athleticism and experience for such a young player to make an instant impact in the Premier League. He is credited as never missing a game for his club through injury, so it came as a shock to Le Bleus fans when he got hurt against Serbia just weeks before the start of the Euro’s. However, the country could breath a sigh of relief when it emerged it would only keep him out of the first group game. Since then he has made a substitute appearance against the Ukraine, but once fully fit, expect him to become a central figure in midfield if France are to progress in the tournament.

Cork’s victory over Kerry was a very important result. The Rebels have invariably struggled to overcome their near neighbours just across the county bounds. Cork are in a good place; the one concern I would have is that Kerry created three or four goal-scoring chances. The Cork half backs are big solid players who are very good going forward but there are question marks regarding their defending. After the game the pundits took the Kerry team and management apart, describing them as being in terminal decline. The management were castigated for the type of football which they branded ponderous and lateral. Eugene Magee in the Sunday Independent said both sets of players apent too much time throwing verbals at each other when they should be concentrating on playing football. I concur with his remarks. I reckon the provincial championship is the problem in this case; the teams are meeting too often. As for this year nothing less than an all-Ireland win will suffice for Cork. Cork vs. Tipperary (Under 21 Hurling)

Once again Cork came up short in their quest for an under 21 hurling title. In fact they were beaten in the opening round of the competition by Tipperary. In was a game in which they had control for long periods and in the final furlong they appeared to be home and dry. Both sides made changes in the final ten minutes. Tipp’s substitutions worked out well; unfortunately Cork’s did not. The Leesiders hunted in packs early on

and seemed to be well able to pick up the breaking ball. The pitch was in a very poor state after some very heavy deluges over the previous 24 hours. The one area I found strange was the insistence of players to go on obviously aimless solo-runs. The conditions did not suit such skills. The bottom line is Cork have not won an under 21 allIreland title since 1998. The result was probably down to hard luck on this occasion, just as it was last year. Cork vs. Tipp (Senior Hurling)

Can Cork win this game? Yes, of course they can. The management have a few serious decisions to make, not least the goalkeeping position. Nash would be my preferred choice here. Perhaps the full back position is another area where a change may be necessary. That said I wonder does Cahalane lack experience. Both Gardiner and Ó’hAilpín are very solid players but they tend to struggle when put on the back foot.

Hall EURO 2012 FunDay is enjoyed by all! Academy soccer by Finbarr Buckley The Douglas Hall FC Academy Section held its annual family fun day on Saturday, June 9th last at sundrenched Moneygourney. Over 200 children from the U-7’s to the U-11’s took part in two separate European Championship Tournaments.

Cork will not lack belief when going into the game against Tipperary – they never do. It is difficult to make out this Premier County team; they appear to have gone back. One wonders if the rumours regarding disharmony in the Tipp camp are true. Certainly the performances have flagged and the form of some of the players has suffered. It would be nice to see them recapture the standard that made them the only real threat to The Cats.

The first tournament was a mixture of the Under 7’s and 8’s and consisted of 8 teams. The final between Ireland & Germany resulted with the latter being victorious on the day. The winnig team consisted of Harry Flanagan, Jason Russell, Eanna Mc Auliffe, John Hinds, Steven Slyne, Kieran Slyne, Jack Cahilll, Evan Cahill Murphy & Shane O’Rourke and was coached by Karl Slyne and Joe Mc Auliffe.

There are a lot of questions to be answered by both sides. All will be revealed on the day. It will be down to which team will show the greatest improvement.

The second Competition was a mixture of the U- 9’s, 10’s and 11’s, with the final also ended up between Ireland and Germany, with the Germans prevailed. The winners consisted of Anton Frank, Gavin Foley, Kevin Mc Sweeney, Niall Mc Whinney, Brian Joyce, Kealan O’Mahony, Jack Hallissey and Callum O’Brien and was coached by Vivian Foley.

There was much thought and consideration went into mixing these age groups into two tournaments particularly from a health and safety point of view but after communicating with the Club Child Welfare Officer, Nick Swanton, the coaches and a number of parents it was decided to proceed on the above basis. The theme of the day was “Respect & Fair Play” which the kids lived up to in spades.

On a truly magical day which began at 10am, the players were well supported by their parents, brothers, sisters, grannies, granddads, aunts, uncles and coaches throughout the entire day. The club wishes to pay a special thanks to Andrew Fealy and his crew for preparing the grounds for the day. The grass pitch was better than the Aviva Stadium! Under the gazebos a BBQ which was manned by parents and would like to Brian Foley of ESI Technology Limited (Official Club Sponsor) for sponsoring the facility on the day. Our raffle was a tremendous success on the day with the U-12 ticket sellers assisted by coaches Tony Hanley and Derry Cronin. We wish to thank the following who donated prizes., Purevision (Offical Club Sponsor) ,Nick and Annika Frank (parents of Under 12 player),Gary O’Flynn of Esus Web Solutions ,Keith Hanley of Hanleys Garden Centre, Diane Fehily of Roman House & countless parents. Senior captain Brian Wilkinson presented the medals to the teams at the finish in what was a truly memorable occasion. DEER FARM, MITCHELSTOWN August 3rd to 5th The Indiependence Music & Arts Festival returns to Deer Farm in Mitchelstown on August 3rd to 5th. With possibly their strongest line-up to date, featuring some firm favourites on the Irish and European festival scene. 2manydjs, Beardyman, Maverick Sabre, Scroobius Pip, Feeder and LTJ Bukem join a growing Irish contingent at this year’s festival, featuring Jape, The Minutes, Japanese Popstars, Delorentos, The Frank & Walters, Bressie, Royseven, Ham Sandwich and The Original Rudeboys. New additions to Indiependence 2012 include the Red Bull Bedroom Jam Stage in association with Breaking Tunes, which will give new Irish acts the opportunity to play at an internationally renowned music festival; the Barcardi Oakheart Arena will be a gem deep within the main Indiependence site filled with great music and the odd cocktail; a new family campsite located in a quiet treelined area of Deer Farm – an oasis of calm in the middle of a great festival weekend; Whelans will also be sponsoring the Whelans Big Top Stage this year, which will feature acts such as Japanese Popstars, Scroobius Pip, Beardyman and Delorentos.

Having sold out their Live At The Marquee show over a month in advance leaving thousands of fans disappointed, The Coronas are delighted to announce that they will now be playing INDIEPENDENCE Music & Arts Festival this August. “Its great to be able to do another show in Cork this summer especially after so many people couldn’t get tickets for the Marquee gig and we love playing at Indie so we’re really looking forward to it” says lead singer Danny O’Reilly. INDIE12 organiser Shane Dunne is also delighted; “its great to have the lads back, they are the hottest act in Ireland right now so to be able to add them to the bill for INDIEPENDENCE this late in the day is great. With so many people looking for tickets after the Marquee sold out, the lads really wanted to do another Cork show and we were only too happy to be it”. The Coronas will play at INDIEPENDENCE Music & Arts Festival 2012 on Sunday August 5th.
