We all need each other! Dear Editor, Re Michael O’Hanlon’s article of 7th June, he mentions a burnt-out car in the Community Park and that ‘from the condition of the area it had been there for some time.’ He went on to explain that complacency in dealing with such an incident can lead to more disrespect of property where such dereliction remains unattended. However there was no complacency on our part or of nearby neighbours in dealing with this particular situation. I would like to explain that the car, which a young lady parked in the park overnight, was set ablaze by some youths at around 11.15 on Friday night, 25th May 2012. The fire brigade and guards were notified by local residents on Church Road that the car was ablaze. Within a very short period, both Fire Brigade and a local guard were on the scene along with Chairman of our association, Billy Coleman. There was some damage done to guttering and faschia boards of the Community Centre but the Fire Brigade stopped the fire from going any further. Our administrator, Nicola, arranged on the following Monday for the car to be removed the following day, Tuesday. Luckily CCTV footage of the incident recorded the images of the perpetrators and the Gardai are dealing with the incident. The park was locked to the public at the time. There was no time lost in dealing with the situation on the part of the local community on Church Road, the Garda, or the DCA itself. We, like Michael are saddened by the amount of rubbish in the park that particular Sunday morning when he visited. Every Saturday morning, our Tidy Towns group goes out and cleans every part of Douglas, filling on average 8 bins of rubbish every week. The park had been cleared of litter as usual on Saturday morning, May 26; I also visited the park on Sunday morning having been alerted about the car, and was shocked to see the rubbish strewn around. Apparently there were many youths in there on Saturday evening, drinking, having made their way in after it was closed up. Incidentally, our caretaker, Eddie Murphy, cleans up the park every weekday. Youths drinking alcohol in public is against the law, and this is a situation that we cannot solve on our own. Our park should not be a place for young adults to hold drinking parties on week-ends, which can end up as this incident did. Local off-licenses should not supply alcohol to under-age people. We also need closer cooperation with the local Garda, and we do already have in place a Community Forum to help our dialogue with them. Parents of youths involved in these anti-social incidents are always shocked that their children are capable of such damage. Parents should know as much as possible, where their children are hanging out in the evenings. This is a community problem, and we need everyone’s effort to solve it. We are embarking on a huge project, phase 1 of which is to extend the community centre to provide a modern Meals & Wheels kitchen, a social space for the retired and elderly of the area, and phase 2 is to build a second story to include facilities for young people. We need all the help we can get, and we are always asking for volunteers to join our group, as we have a big task ahead of us. Our website will be up and running in a week’s time, and we ask you, the reader, to please take the opportunity to find out what we are doing and how you can play your part. As the old Irish phase goes ‘Ar scath a cheile a mhaireann na daoine’ – we live in each other’s shadows, in other words, we all need each other. Yours sincerely, Helen Fox PRO, Douglas Community Association (DC A)

Funding for St. Fin Barre’s Cathedral Cork South Central Fine Gael TD Jerry Buttimer has welcomed the allocation of €212,000 for conservation works at St Fin Barre’s Cathedral. “The allocation of €212,000 for conservation works at St. Fin Barre’s Cathedral is a welcome investment which will help preserve and enhance a key piece of Cork’s heritage. I am pleased that the Minister for Arts Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Jimmy Deenihan, has recognised the significance of the cathedral to the cultural heritage of Cork. “This funding will now facilitate significant emergency conservation works on the cathedral to proceed. Included in the proposed works are internal conservation measures to the north and south transepts and external conservation measures to the western front, the main entrance to the cathedral. “Works to the North Transept will permit essential repair works to the stonework and plastering eliminating the risk to the organ from dust and falling debris. I am aware that St. Fin Barre’s Cathedral continues to seek financial support to carry out the complete conservation and restoration works necessary for the organ. “The money assigned by the Minister comes from a fund which is specifically assigned for supporting conservation work to buildings which are deemed to be of significant special interest. “The National Inventory of Architectural Heritage recognises the international importance of the cathedral, dating from the 1860s it is an iconic Cork monument. The conservation of significant protected structures ensures that we preserve these important historical sites. “Minister Deenihan has approved over €700,000 to protect vulnerable structures. As well as the money for St. Fin Barre’s Cathedral €500,000 is being allocated to assist with works to safeguard at risk structures in 41 projects across 27 local authority. Other Cork structures which will benefit from this fund include Shandon Tower and Alms House in Glanmire. “Preserving our built heritage is an important factor in attracting tourists to Cork. This funding will enhance some of Cork’s key tourist sites, delivering an improved experience for visitors. In particular it will ensure that the splendour of St. Fin Barre’s cathedral is preserved for future generations.”

Idiot Sighting I was at the airport, checking in at the gate when an airport employee asked, ‘Has anyone put anything in your baggage without your knowledge?’ To which I replied, ‘If it was without my knowledge, how would I know?’ He smiled knowingly and nodded, ‘That’s why we ask.’ Happened in Birmingham

Seen, Read + Heard by Michael O’Hanlon I was going to write about something totally different this week, however an event which took place in Dublin over the weekend made me change my mind, the violent death of journalist Eugene Moloney. Eugene was a well known and respected newspaper man who had travelled all over the world, including covering the Northern Ireland conflict.Apart from doing a job he loved his other great passion was music. His cousin's son was on "LiveLine" today (Monday) talking to Joe Duffy talking about Eugene, their mutual love of music, the last concert they went to was Elvis Costello, and their plans to see Bob Dylan again when he returned to Ireland, sadly that will not happen, the big gentle man who loved music is gone, not because of an accident or natural causes, but of deadly violence.Joe Duffy had other callers on his show and one man in particular hit home when he told Joe that both he and his wife never went into O'Connell Street,Dublin after 9'oclock at night,I got the message "Fear".Think about that, two citizens of the Irish State in fear of walking the main street of their capital city after 9 pm. A few years ago I spoke to a man who informed me that his weekly couple of pints in his local pub in Douglas West was now but a memory, the reason being that he did'nt feel safe walking from Douglas West to Shamrock Lawn at closing time.Today I rang an old friend who was a Garda,he told me something along the same lines,a friend of his would'nt walk from Douglas Village to Donnybrook at night around closing time.I feel that people believe that they are being confined to their homes when the sun goes down and not just here in Douglas, but all over Ireland.I ask myself, where and when did it all begin? The fear of ending up on a life support machine in a Cork hospital, never knowing why.Today in the world in which we live violence, aggression, bad manners,no respect for people or property, the list goes on.Yet it was not always like this, let's go back.In the mid 60's I would walk my girlfriend home from Highfield Rugby Club on Model Farm Road to The South Douglas Road, that was Via The Bandon Road, onto Evergreen Rd. into Douglas Street, onto High St.into Capwell Avenue eventually reaching her home on the Sth. Douglas Road. Then I walked home,Up the Main Douglas Road, onto Ballinlough, through Victoria Avenue, finally home to Blackrock Road. Never attacked, young fellows passed us,some might say"Good

night",some eating chips wrapped in newspaper, one could smell the chips and vinegar as they passed,it was a good smell. In the early 70's I worked in Kincora Carpets Kinsale Road,it was shift work, the evening shift was four to 12 midnight. A few of us lived between Blackpool and Mayfield,so from The Kinsale road to Blackpool and onto Mayfield, never a cross word was said by strangers who crossed our path. That was the way it was then, but not for long. Things began to change in the mid 70's, the Northern troubles, armed bank robberies, the dance halls were gone along with Tanora soft drinks, replaced with fully licensed night clubs, drugs were creeping in,mix drugs and drinks,we all know now what it leads to,this was only the beginning, the 80's,90's,2012 is where we're at now.About two years ago I was standing outside a restaurant in the city centre having a cigarette,I saw him walking on the footpath walking a bike,he stopped, put the bike against the window, approached me and asked"Do you believe in Jesus?" I replied"Yeah,I do" He continued "Do you know you're standing in his place?" I answered" No, I did'nt"(Thinking,Mother of God, how do these fruitcakes find me!!) He came closer and said"You'll have to move or I'll move you" I replied "I'm not moving ".He lounged, grabbing me by my jacket and I noticed that there was no smell of drink but the pupils of his eyes were like saucers,The restaurant staff were shouting at me to come in, I shouted "Ring the Guards!!",the time was 10;15pm.There I was,Waltzing with a CokeHead in the city centre on a Friday night,I tried to trip him,it was like pushing an Oak tree, a Magnum:357 would have done the job.Eventually somebody who was passing and knew him dragged him away. The squad car arrived at 11:50pm,the garda asked me my name and (I'll never forget this,my date of birth!!) I assume they never found the 6foot plus, silver tracksuited crack head walking a bike through the streets of Cork City. Finally,The only way to stop this madness is to reclaim the streets of our cities, take them back before before there are more victims like Eugene Moloney,CCTV does not save your life, a Garda on the beat could. The writing on the doors of the American police cars state "To protect and serve",We could learn from that.R.I.P Eugene Moloney. Until next time, If the good Lord's willing, and the creeks don't rise.

Michael O’Hanlon.

Poetry Corner with Ronnie McGinn

As the fourth of July approaches I am reminded of a poem in the book ‘My Road’ by Marion Rose Horgan, from Cobh, Co Cork, Ireland. If you haven’t already got a copy, email me and I let you know where you can order one. It’s a book well worth having and a keepsake you will always treasure. Marion tells us that her poem ‘Independence Day’ was written to celebrate the birth of her nephew, David Warren Hughes, on the 4th July 2002. It gives an entire new feeling to the occasion. Dave Horgan and his wife Trish were expecting their fifth child in 2002. Dave, who has always been a fan of America and all things American, thought that it would be really special if the baby could be born on Independence Day. Trish, who is the epitome of organization, was more interested in getting the baby into the world on the earliest possible date, but being the dutiful and devoted wife she is, she duly obliged and David Warren Hughes was born on Thursday, the fourth of July 2002, weighing in a sturdy 9lbs. Dave’s sister Marian Rose was icing a chocolate cake to celebrate the baby’s homecoming when these lines came to mind ...

Wanted!

INDEPENDENCE DAY A brand new day, fourth of July, A newborn fills his lungs and cries. A new star’s shining in the skies It’s Independence Day. An eaglet starts to learn to fly, Under his mother’s watchful eye. He’s looking upwards to the sky It’s Independence Day. Life is so short, so let it be, Brimful of opportunity. I wish you deep serenity, It’s Independence Day. Pair winds and fortune may you find, And happiness and peace of mind. Be ever patient, true and kind. It’s Independence Day The cord is cut, now you will be In awe of your great liberty. May you fulfill your destiny, It’s Independence Day. Marian Rose Horgan

Ulster Bank Fiasco Understandably, there is huge anger out there over the Ulster Bank fiasco. This has been going on now for almost a week and if we are to believe the bank, it does not expect matters to be sorted until later this week at the earliest. Ulster Bank through its parent group, the Royal Bank of Scotland, is potentially guilty of breach of duty and statutory duty and the question arises as to whether a breach of contract arises also. Up to 100,000 customers have been affected, including 53,000 social welfare recipients and 38,000 HSE Employees There is huge anger at the continuous missing of deadlines by the bank. People are at their wit’s end because they cannot access their wages or social welfare entitlements. And there has been no real clarity from Ulster Bank or the RBS as to what exactly has gone wrong.

Things They Say After putting her grandchildren to bed, a grandmother changed into old slacks and a droopy blouse and proceeded to wash her hair. As she heard the children getting more and more rambunctious, her patience grew thin. Finally, she threw a towel around her head and stormed into their room, putting them back to bed with stern warnings. As she left the room, she heard the three-year-old say with a trembling voice, “Who was THAT?”

As a gesture, the bank should consider repaying or absorbing some of their banking fees charged charged to the approximate 100,000 customers who are affected by this debacle. In addition, they urgently need to clarify their responsibility in regard to any penalties that may arise from customers not being able to meet standing orders and direct debits, along with any charges that may arise in relation to interest charges due to overdrafts occurring because of a failure by Ulster Bank to transfer funds to other accounts.

Insect bites and stings Signs and symptoms of an insect bite result from the injection of venom or other substances into your skin. The venom sometimes triggers an allergic reaction. The severity of your reaction depends on your sensitivity to the insect venom or substance and whether you’ve been stung or bitten more than once. Most reactions to insect bites are mild, causing little more than an annoying itching or stinging sensation and mild swelling that disappear within a day or so. A delayed reaction may cause fever, hives, painful joints and swollen glands. You might experience both the immediate and the delayed reactions from the same insect bite or sting. Only a small percentage of people develop severe reactions (anaphylaxis) to insect venom. Signs and symptoms of a severe reaction include: • Nausea • Facial swelling • Difficulty breathing • Abdominal pain

How do I handle mum’s Alzheimer’s?

• Deterioration of blood pressure and circulation (shock) Bites from bees, wasps, hornets etc. are typically the most troublesome. Bites from mosquitoes, ticks, biting flies also can cause reactions, but these are generally milder. Although rare, some insects also carry disease such as West Nile virus or Lyme disease.

For mild reactions Move to a safe area to avoid more stings. Remove the stinger, especially if it’s stuck in your skin. This will prevent the release of more venom. Wash area with soap and water. Apply a cold pack or cloth filled with ice to reduce pain and swelling. Apply hydrocortisone cream (0.5 percent), calamine lotion or a baking soda paste — with a ratio of 3 teaspoons (15 milliliters) baking soda to 1 teaspoon (5 milliliters) water — to the bite or sting several times a day until

For severe reactions Severe reactions may progress rapidly. Call 999 for emergency medical assistance if the following signs or symptoms occur: • Difficulty breathing • Swelling of the lips or throat • Faintness • Dizziness • Confusion • Rapid heartbeat Take these actions immediately while waiting with an affected person for medical help: Check for medications that the person might be carrying to treat an allergic

attack, such as an auto-injector of epinephrine (for example, EpiPen). Administer the drug as directed. Have the person take an antihistamine pill if he or she is able to do so without choking. Do this after administering epinephrine. Have the person lie still on his or her back with feet higher than the head. Loosen tight clothing and cover the person with a blanket. Don’t give anything to drink. Turn the person on his or her side to prevent choking if there’s vomiting or bleeding from the mouth. Begin CPR if there are no signs of circulation, such as breathing, coughing or movement. If your doctor has prescribed an autoinjector of epinephrine, read the instructions before a problem develops and also have your household members read them. Tidy Towns Competition Our volunteers were out in force again last Saturday. The streets of Douglas East looked pristine on Saturday morning after their clean-up and fair dues to Cork Co. Council, the new road surface in East Douglas has greatly improved the appearance of the whole street. Tubs are now filled up with beautiful flowers and let’s hope for a bit of sunshine to help continue the flowering. Of course we know that by Saturday evening, the streets will be littered with rubbish again, so disheartening for the volunteers. If Litter Wardens were able to work overtime on a Saturday night in Douglas, they would collect a fortune on fining those responsible. The problem is, there is no deterrent for those who do this constantly. The business people of Douglas give great support to Tidy Towns and we should support them as much as possible. Most of them take great pains to present their premises – planting up window boxes, freshening up the paint, etc. Let’s all get behind the people making a very positive contribution to our village again this year, and it will uplift us all to see our village and environs looking their best.

Know Your Rights: Free Travel Scheme Question: My widowed brother has just turned 66. He wants to travel all over Ireland, including Northern Ireland. How does he get his Free Travel Pass and can I travel with him for free as well (I am not 66 yet)? Answer: Everyone aged 66 and over living permanently in the State is entitled to a Free Travel Pass, under the Free Travel Scheme. Free travel is available on all State public transport (bus, rail and Dublin’s LUAS service) and also on a limited number of services that are operated by private bus transport companies. If your brother is getting a social welfare pension, the Free Travel Pass will issue automatically. Otherwise he must apply by completing a Free Travel application form FT1. He can get this form and other additional information from his local social welfare office or online from the Department of Social Protection website – welfare.ie.

He will only be eligible for a Companion Free Travel Pass (which allows a named companion to travel

with him free of charge) if he is unable to travel on his own. Unless you are his named companion, you will have to wait until you are 66 to obtain your own Free Travel Pass. To travel in Northern Ireland free of charge on all bus and rail services he will need a Senior SmartPass card which he can get by filling in application form FTNI1. It is available from his local social welfare office. It is not available online.

Public Consultation on Douglas Plan Set to Commence As I have previously reported, Cork County Council is currently working on the Douglas Land Use and Transportation Study ( DLUTS ). A second round of public consultation on this process will commence on July 10th and details in relation to making submissions regarding the DLUTS will be publicly advertised shortly, alternatively, details will be available on the Council's website www.corkcoco.ie . This round of public consultation is of critical importance to the overall plan and I would encourage all interested parties to make a submission in the coming weeks. If you would like to discuss any aspect of this process with me, please let me know.

Rochestown Road Improvements Work is due to commence shortly on a number of improvements for the Rochestown road. The roundabout on the Rochestown road, near St. Patrick's Church, will be subject to some upgrade work which is aimed at improving traffic flow. Critically, the Council Engineer has informed me that it is the Council's intention to create a second lane for traffic approaching the roundabout from the Clarke's Hill / Coach Hill direction. This measure should help to alleviate some of the significant traffic congestion in the morning peak time. Furthermore, the Council intend to resurface part of the Rochestown road from the roundabout in the direction of Coach Hill. It is hoped that this work will be carried out during the Summer months while the schools are on holidays.

Chiropractic Really Works If you have ever thought about going to a Chiropractor but have hesitated because you weren’t sure if Chiropractic was right for you, please read on... My name is Dr. Michael Clifford and I practice at Koru Chiropractic in Douglas. Thousands of people have been helped by Chiropractic in this area. They live healthier lives and say they are more productive at work and at home. They have experienced the remarkable results that are possible with Chiropractic care. Unfortunately, most people still don’t realize the life-giving benefits realized with Chiropractic care. If you or someone you know is suffering from: • Migraines and everyday headaches • Lower Back Pain or disc disorders/ herniations • Numbness or Parasthesia in your extremities • Fatigue or lack of energy • Muscle spasms, sprains, strains • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome • Stiff achy joints • Feeling like you are older than old, etc... ...or a host of other problems ranging from dizziness to ringing in the ears, you need to explore the possibility of Chiropractic Care. Fortunately, if you are suffering from any of these problems right now, these problems

will be helped or eliminated by Chiropractic treatments. If you have always wanted to feel and experience a Chiropractic adjustment, this is the time because we are celebrating our 8th birthday at Koru here in Douglas and for a limited time we are offering a free consultation and exam and a detailed report of any findings. Just call us and bring the ad for Koru Chiropractic found in this paper. Does Chiropractic Really Work?

Absolutely! Listen to one of our recent patients success story, as told by one of my patients: Beginning about 6 years ago I had a very painful sciatic nerve problem causing alot of pain when I walked. Three years ago I had to have a surgery to scrape the inside of my vertebrae, it was supposed to stop the pain. IT DID NOT WORK! In fact it got worse, I couldn’t walk more than 10 feet without having to sit down, the pain in my leg was excruciating. Then they wanted to give me injections and I said, ‘Forget it!’ After a few adjustments with Dr. Michael at Koru my pain was gone for the first time in years, without having any more injections or surgery! Two couples went out golfing together. The men hit first from the men’s tee and walked with the ladies to their tee box. The first lady took a mighty swing at the ball, missing it completely, while passing some gas rather loudly in the process. No one commented. She addressed the ball again but this time she passed just little gas as she made contact with the ball, topping it and moving it only a short distance. She said, “I wonder why it didn’t go any further?” One of the men said, “I don’t think you gave it enough gas!”

St. Patrick’s Mills Douglas In the early 18th century the linen industry was established in Douglas and the "Mills" played a major part in the village life for over two hundred years. As far back as 1726 the Douglas sailcloth industry was active. Rope making was another key industry at that time. In the mid-seventeenth century, the area consisted of a small number of large farms or estates with a total population of 308 people. With the arrival of the sail-cloth industry in 1726 (flax being the raw material) Douglas began to take shape as a settled community. This provided much needed employment for the people of Douglas and outside areas. With the decline in the use of sail, the linen industry declined. Some of the mills converted to the manufacture of worstead cloth.

The Mills were still producing cloth into the 1970’s however with the recession of the 1970's, the last two mills closed; bringing to an end a tradition that had lasted 250 years. The old St. Patrick’s Mill site is now a thriving commercial park with numerous outlets offering years of experience in a range of services and goods, with the major advantage of FREE parking for the first hour! and all day parking for €3, The Mills certainly has it all! The Douglas Post has recently moved into The Mills and has found the parking a major advantage not only for ourselves but for our own customers and readers, nowadays with parking such a controversial issue in the Douglas area, we thought it was time to remind our readers on what The Mills has to offer.

Home & G arden Things to do This Week As usual we try to give you a few ideas on what might need doing in your garden this week. Not everything in this article may apply to your garden - but there might be something, if not this week maybe next week.

Flower Garden Start thinking about ordering springflowering bulbs. Lift tulips once foliage has died down, and dry off the bulbs. Sow hardy annuals for autumn colour, in a nursery bed or cold frame. Start taking semi-ripe cuttings of shrubs and root in a cold frame. Watch out for black spot and mildew on roses, and spray promptly with fungicide. Start feeding hanging baskets and other containers 6 weeks after planting.

Kitchen Garden Sow oriental brassicas direct or in a nursery bed. Make a last sowing of a small early carrot variety. Summer prune cherries and plums. Prop up laden plum branches to prevent breakage. Cut dill, fennel and coriander seed heads as they turn colour, and hang up in paper bags to dry.

Lawns & Hedges

If the weather turns hot and dry remove the grass box from mowers and raise the height of the cut slightly.

Greenhouse Pinch out the growing tips of tomatoes in pots and growing bags after four trusses. In hot weather leave the greenhouse doors open, but net against birds if there are fruits ripening inside. Pot up freesias for indoor flowers in winter, and stand pots outdoors until October. Sow more basil if earlier plants look like flowering.

Water Garden

The Last Statue Maker in Cork A new documentary called ‘The Last Statue Maker in Cork’ was screened recently in the Firkin Crane, Shandon. This simple story tells of one man’s life and work. Maurice O’Donnell made things with his hands all his life and would happily spend all his free time doing so. From the little figures of DeValera and Mussolini that he modelled from turf as a small boy during the war years, to large statues that have been exhibited all over the world. It tells how his fascination as a child with Mr Bernardi’s statue shop on Paul St in Cork eventually led to a job there. How his apprenticeship with the Italians developed his skill and how he too went to Italy to learn from the great masters. How he eventually took over the business and continued to make statues right up to his eighties, improving his craftsmanship all the time. The documentary also tells the stories of some of the statues themselves, including the famous ‘moving’ statue of Ballinspittle, which was one of Maurice’s creations. The film is an opportunity to honour a shy, gentle man, who sadly passed away in 2010 and to remember his great hidden talent. The Last Statue Maker in Cork has been produced by Frameworks Films in collaboration with the Cork Mason’s Union for Cork Community Television. It was funded under the Sound & Vision scheme, an initiative of the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland. The documentary is also being broadcast on Cork Community Television which can be seen on Channel 803 on the UPC digital cable package and is also streamed online on www.corkcommunitytv.ie http://www.corkheritage.ie/ http://www.kieranmccarthy.ie/ Kieran’ heritage on facebook: Cork: Our City, Our Town

Young @ Heart by Phil Goodman

Our annual trip to the Naval Base is always that bit special and last week trip was no different ,we were warmly welcomed by Navy Personal who took us on a tour of the base enjoyed lunch ,followed by music song and dance a great day enjoyed by all. Care-Ring phone service will recommence on Monday 3rd of September. Our volunteers take a break for the summer but are always available at any time to have a chat. We also recognise the need for home visitation and hope to begin that service in the coming months. If anyone would like to get involved as a volunteer helping people who sometimes cannot help themselves contact me as each volunteer will partake in HSE training course. If you have a few hours a month to give to those in need of support in our community you will find it very rewarding ,each volunteer will also undergo Garda vetting as part of the training course we strive to make Douglas a great place to grow old in. Thanks to all who have entered the competition to try and find a suitable name for the Young at Heart “BOOK”. Keep the suggestions coming and win a prize of dinner for two sponsored by Home Instead Care, the book will recount stories and events of places we’ve been

and people we’ve met in the past ten years I need a name for the book that will encompass all of that. Where is that summer weather we were promised ? Hopefully we will find it in Derrynane this week. In any case we will enjoy ourselves with a bus full and Dennie ‘Master of Ceremonies’. Hail, rain or sunshine the craic will be good! Suddenly Bill saw a man in the crowd “ Here Tom, do you see who that is?” “ I don’t believe it” gasped Tom. “It’s Phil”. He was quite right. But how did he recognise Phil? When neither brother had ever seen him before.

Euro 2012 by Mark Maher So we have reached the semi final stage, and it’s fair to say that all of the teams that progressed from the quarter finals were deserving winners. Germany were too strong for a Greece side that couldn’t cope with some outstanding passages of play from the German’s. A Ronaldo inspired Portugal eventually broke down a dogged Czech Republic defence thanks to a powerful header from the Real Madrid ace for his third of the competition. Spain were deserving 2-0 winners against a French side that appeared to lack any unity, heart or passion. Xabi Alonso capped a fine performance with a brace on his 100th appearance for La Rioja. England were deservedly beaten at their own game against Italy, as they seemed to play for penalties before going out by them. Italy’s 36 shots (20 on target) to England’s 9 summed up England’s tactical decision to sit back and try break Italy on the counter attack. With players like Rooney, Gerard, Terry and Cole England should’ve took the game to the Italians who had a makeshift defence consisting of Barzagli and Bonucci (after Cheillini was ruled out through injury), but for once England can be accused of actually underestimating themselves and seemed happy to play for penalties against a beatable Italian side. Andrea Pirlo pulled the strings in midfield, completely bossing the game and his sublime penalty summed up an outstanding individual performance. With Montolivio missing first in the shootout, England were in the driving seat only to see Ashley Young hit the bar before Ashley Cole’s tame spot kick was saved by Buffon, giving former West Ham player Alessandro Diamanti the chance to win it for Italy. England now have lost 7 penalty shootouts from their last 8 attempts! So in the semi’s it’s Germany v Italy and Spain v Portugal. Italy who will be tired after playing over 2 hours of football just 3 days before the semi’s, also have a list of injury doubts including Thiago Motta, Giorgio Cheillini, Daniele De Rossi and Ignazio Abate, while Germany will have Gomez, Podolski, and Muller all fresh after resting them against Greece. Spain will have a tough task against an ever improving Portugal side. No doubt the Spanish will be favourites, but Portugal – with the likes of Ronaldo, Joao Moutinho, and Pepe, will provide stiff opposition for their neighbour’s. An exciting 2 games lie ahead as the 4 teams look to secure their place in the final on July 1st in Kiev. Sepp Blatter recently describing technology in football as a “necessity” sums up his time in charge of FIFA. After so many controversial errors, there had been calls to introduce technology for years only for Blatter to disregard it saying it wasn’t needed. Even before the last World Cup, FIFA officials had a chance to introduce it at the International Football Association Board (IFAB) in Switzerland. Here, they studied 13 goal line technology systems like “Hawkeye” – which is used in tennis as a complex computer system that visually tracks

the ball. After discussions, they decided against these ideas even though there were cries from fans all over the world. So for Blatter to finally change his mind over 2 years later and say that it’s a necessity in football, adds to his incompetence. Such blatant mistakes have cost teams and if it had been introduced at that meeting then it could have eradicated decisions such as Thierry Henry’s infamous “Hand of Frog” against Ireland, Frank Lampard’s “goal” in the last World Cup against Germany, and more recently Ukraine’s goal that wasn’t given against England just last week. The next IFAB meeting is on July 5th and it will decide whether to pass the introduction of technology in football. How Blatter was re-elected in the first place was a farce. His only opposition had to withdraw due to bribery charges meaning he was the only candidate running for election, and he will now be in charge until 2015. The English F.A were the only one’s that actually tried to prevent him from being re-elected but they were completely outvoted. His opinions on racism in football, have added further insult to claims that he’s unfit for presidency. How the head of world football can publicly say that there’s no racism in football and that if one player racially abuses another that it should be resolved with a handshake clearly doesn’t give a good image toward anti-racism campaigns. Not just Blatter though, as Uefa’s recent decision to fine Croatia a measly €80,000 for racist chanting compared to the €100,000 they fined Niklas Bendtner (including 1 match ban) for misappropriate advertising during a goal celebration is a disgrace. How can their anti-racism campaign be taken seriously if they won’t clamp down on acts of racism…. One to watch: This week’s one to watch is Spain’s Jordi Alba. The 23 year-old Valencia left back, has filled the void in the one area the Spanish lacked since the departure of Capdevilla, and his consistent performances have led to him being lined up as Eric Abidal’s replacement at Barcelona in a €15 million deal. Nicknamed “El Enano” (The Dwarf), he only had 5 caps to his name prior to the tournament but he has excelled to become arguably the best left back at this year’s tournament. After yet another outstanding performance against France - where he took advantage of a French mistake before delivering an inch perfect cross for Xabi Alonso’s opener, he summed up all his attributes by showing speed, strength and an inch perfect cross. If Alba, who can also operate at left wing, can continue to progress then expect him to become a permanent fixture on the Spanish team sheet for the next 10-12 years.

DOUGLAS GAA Junior “A” Hurling C’ship: Douglas 0-13 Blackrock 0-06

Ballinlough hosted a double header at Ballinlough last Saturday night when both Douglas Junior hurling teams were in championship action. After a bright opening and two Joe Larkin goals, the Junior “B” side were defeated by 1-16 to 2-10 to Brian Dillons in the curtain raiser. However, the Douglas Junior “A” team made amends with a convincing victory over Blackrock. Leading by just a point at the interval, Douglas’ greater strength in depth proved decisive with substitutes Philip Shine and Ray Keating both making important contributions. Others to impress for Douglas included full back trio Adrian O’Connell, Paddy Barry and Shane O’Donoghue while in attack Mark O’Connor’s mobility complemented the experienced Brian Boyle and Gary McLoughlin.

Our Golden Goal winners were Martha Harrington, Pat O’Mahony, and Janice Darrer, our thanks to Frank Kavanagh the extra funds were appreciated. Results:
