Letters to the Editor frontdesk@douglaspost.ie

We’d love to hear from you. If you have any news, views or issues you’d like to see covered, write to the Douglas Post, Unit 29C, St Patrick’s Mills, Douglas West, Cork or by e-mail to frontdesk@douglaspost.ie Please include your name and address and a contact number. Letters may be edited due to space considerations.

Too Much Concrete ? Dear Editor The consequences of having too much concrete poured onto the ground are all too obvious given the recent problems with flooding. Our urban and suburban areas are smothered in concrete without enough thought given to heavy rain water. The fault lies with the planners and local councils who just don’t know when to say stop to development and are content to have us all living in a concrete jungle. Drainage is obvious a huge problem with high rise developments and roads that are built everywhere and anywhere. It is of no advantage to business to come into a place covered in concrete and then have the business wiped out by the failure of planners to deal with drainage. It is counterproductive in the extreme, not to mention residents who are flooded out of their homes— all in the name of insidious progress! Maurice Fitzgerald, Shanbally, County Cork.

Is Ireland’s best neighbour to be found in County Cork? Dear Editor A search to find Irelands’ Neighbour of the Year has just been announced as part of this year’s People of the Year Awards which are organised by Rehab and broadcast on RTÉ One on Saturday, 15 September. This special award, presented in partnership with the Tubridy programme on RTÉ 2fm, aims to honour that special person who has gone to extraordinary lengths to support the people in our neighbourhoods, across the street and next door. It is about acknowledging the importance of neighbours – so often the glue that keep our communities together – and the role that they play in our lives. If you think you know a neighbour who has done something extraordinary, who has made a real difference and who has inspired by their actions, then nominate them now. You can do so by going online at www.peopleoftheyear.com or by getting in touch with the People of the Year Awards at 01 2057260 and a nomination form will be sent to you. Nominees may also be featured on Tubridy on RTÉ 2fm, which airs weekdays from 9am. The closing date for nominations is Friday, 7 September at 12 midday. Who knows but the winner of this year’s People of the Year Awards special category could be a reader of the Douglas Post? Now, that’s something the neighbours will want to talk about! Kind regards Don Delaney People of the Year Awards office, Rehab, Roslyn Park, Beach Road, Sandymount, Dublin 4 Disclaimer: Any views or opinions expressed in these letters are solely those of the individual author(s) and do not necessarily represent those of The Douglas Post.

Poetry Corner with Ronnie McGinn

It was with regret I learned of the recent passing of Redvers McGrath. Four years ago he sent us a lovely poem in which he shared with us his feelings on returning to Garryvoe beach in East Cork after a long absence. The sentiment he expressed struck a familiar chord with many of our readers and we received a great reaction to his poem. His Christian name fascinated me. Apparently in the days of The British Empire it was customary for military personal to name their children after their regimental commander. In this case an Irishman serving in The Boer War stuck to the rules and in good Irish tradition the name was handed down through the generations. To his wife Norna, to their daughters Norna and Anne, to their sons Jack, Redvers and Terence, and to their grandchildren and their greatgrandchildren and their entire extended family we offer our deepest sympathy and our most sincere condolences. May he Rest in Peace.

Wanted!

GARRYVOE MEMORIES I came home from a foreign land to walk my native shore. Where I had left as a boy so many years ago. The memories of those happy days comes flowing back to me. I see my mother on the strand in Garryvoe looking out to sea. My brother and my sister, how plainly I can see Them playing on the stand and swimming in the sea. My father’s boat comes in to view we run to give ‘a hand To drag the boat half full with fish up on to the strand. My mother would come marching down with baskets in her hand And send us off to sell the fish to people on the stand. I walk to where the old folks meet so many years ago. The old thatched cottage, and humped back bridge are gone forever more. And in their place a Grand Hotel stands proudly by the shore. A little boy walked up to me and caught me by the hand Are .you lost sir? he said to me this is Garryvoe Strand. I marvel at his innocence, how could he understand. That I too, long, long ago talked to strangers on this strand. I turn to go but I’m not sad but for in his eyes I see That he some day will come back home to Garryvoe like me. Redvers McGrath Send your poem to ‘The Poetry Corner’ / Douglas Post, Unit 29 C, St Patrick’s Mills, Douglas or you can email it direct to ronniemcginn@ eircom.net. If possible keep your poem to 20 lines. You may choose any subject you like, in any form you like as long as it’s original. We look forward to hearing from you. RonnieMcGinn

Lose 2 stone in 10 weeks! With diet, exercise and metabolism correction The TRUTH is there are 3 keys to a genuine weight loss (real fat loss!) plan – diet, exercise and metabolism correction. All 3 keys interconnect – one will not work without the other! Your metabolism is the most powerful of all the 3 keys – it is the ‘switch’ that controls everything else. In most people this switch is off. Metabolism problems like slow thyroid, type 2 Diabetes, sluggish liver, hormone imbalances, PCOS, Endometriosis, infertility and digestive problems like constipation, IBS and Diverticulitis will limit or stop your weight loss, no matter how much dieting or exercise you do. Work on fixing your metabolism problems for amazing results. Combine this with a reasonable diet (under-eating is worse than over-eating) and a reasonable amount of exercise (too much exercise is as bad as no exercise) and you will get the best, the fastest and the easiest weight loss ever. Our Plan: The System 10 plan includes: • An analysis of your metabolism • Dietician designed highly balanced food plans of normal, natural foods, no pills, bars or shakes. • An exercise plan [home – walk, jog or bike] or gym plan including toning. • Nutritional supplement recommendations to rapidly repair your system. • Private weigh –ins, motivational tips and support throughout programme. • We can guarantee that every pound you lose is a pound of fat [you don’t lose water or muscle like most plans]. You will lose 2-3 lbs every week and because our programme is designed to speed up your metabolism you will keep the weight off when you finish your plan. Programmes available for Men and Women.

Sciatica Sciatica refers to pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve and its branches — from your back down your buttock and leg. The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in your body. It runs from your spinal cord to your buttock and hip area and down the back of each leg. Sciatica is a symptom, not a disorder. The radiating pain of sciatica signals another problem involving the nerve, such as a herniated disk. Depending on the cause, the pain of acute sciatica — which may be quite uncomfortable — usually goes away on its own within a couple of months.

Symptoms Pain that radiates from your lower (lumbar) spine to your buttock and down the back of your leg is the

hallmark of sciatica. You may feel the discomfort almost anywhere along the nerve pathway, but it’s especially likely to follow a path from your low back to your buttock and the back of your thigh and calf. The pain can vary widely, from a mild ache to a sharp, burning sensation or excruciating discomfort. Sometimes it may feel like a jolt or electric shock. It may be worse when you cough or sneeze, and prolonged sitting can aggravate symptoms. Usually only one lower extremity is affected. Sciatica symptoms include: • Pain • Numbness or muscle weakness • Tingling or a pins-and-needles feeling • A loss of bladder or bowel control

Diabetes, what do I do now?

Causes Your sciatic nerve branches from your spinal cord through your hips and buttocks and down the back of each leg. This nerve controls many of the muscles in your lower legs and provides feeling to your thighs, legs and feet. Sciatica may develop when a nerve root is compressed in your lower (lumbar) spine — often as a result of a herniated disk in your lower back.

Treatments For most people, sciatica responds well to self-care measures. These may include use of alternating cold packs and hot packs, stretching, exercise, and use of over-the-counter (OTC) medications. Beyond the self-care measures you may have taken, your doctor may recommend the following: • Physical therapy

We can help you with any health

• Prescription drugs • Lifestyle remedies For most people, sciatica responds well to self-care measures. You’ll heal more quickly if you continue with your usual activities, but avoid what may have triggered the pain in the first place. Although resting for a day or so may provide some relief, prolonged bed rest isn’t a good idea. In the long run, inactivity will make your signs and symptoms worse. In addition to resuming usual activities, try the following measures: • Cold packs • Hot packs • Stretching • Over-the-counter medications • Regular exercise If you would like more information contact Garvan at Lynch’s Pharmacy on 4366923.

Schools to incorporate PE as part of revised Junior Certificate Cork South Central Fine Gael TD Jerry Buttimer has encouraged schools to incorporate physical education as part of the revised Junior Certificate. “Exercise and physical activity plays an important role in ensuring general and mental health. If we are to encourage young people to lead healthy lives physical education must considered as an integral part of their education. “The revised Junior Cycle framework provides that when a student completes the Junior Certificate they should be able to participate in physical activity confidently and competently. In addition to this, as part of the Junior Cycle Review, there will be an opportunity for schools to develop short courses which will be assessed by a portfolio. This provision has the potential to enable schools to include PE as part of the Junior Certificate. “If we are to equip students to lead healthy lives when they leave school then we must promote physical education. Not only will this have clear benefits for individual students it will also have long term benefits for wider society. “Figures from the Institute of Public Health in Ireland indicate that there will be a 30% increase in number of people living with diabetes over next ten years. Research suggests that almost one in ten people over 45 will be affected by the condition. This increase has serious consequences for individuals and society. We must take all possible steps to counteract its impact. “The most worrying aspect the increased incidence of diabetes is that there has been a clear rise in the preventable type II diabetes, which accounts for about 90% of cases. Type II diabetes can be attributable to lifestyle choices, making healthier choices can prevent its onset. Schools are the ideal place to equip children to make healthy choices, incorporating PE as part of the Junior Certificate qualification can have long term benefits.”

An Easy Exercise Class for Senior Citizens Every Tuesday at 10:30 am Re – Opening On September 11th Lion House (behind Daily’s Shop) Douglas

Still time to enroll for Pre-School Playgroup!!! We are currently enrolling for September - please contact Catherine at 086 1217161 for all enquiries. Major renovations have been carried out to the pre-school, so a brandnew, refurbished pre-school will be open for business again in September. There are still some places, so don’t delay in booking in your child, contact Catherine at 086 1217161. All the facilities of the beautiful community park and playground will be available to the children. This part of the building project was planned for a later phase of the overall expansion of the centre, but funds became available from Pobal, and it was made possible for the work

to be done way ahead of schedule. The renovations included a fire-wall which now separates this part of the building from the bigger community centre area bringing it up to the most modern health and safety standards.

Family Fun Day at Tramore Valley Park, Sat. 25th August This was a great success and we were very proud of all our volunteers who participated. It is amazing what plans are in hand for this former landfill and amenity site of 200 acres that is now being developed as parkland which includes plans for a bridge over the south link from Grange to give pedestrian and cyclist access. It is still open for recycling items. There was very good and detailed information provided on the project, and anyone interested should go on the Cork City Council website, and learn about plans for its future development.

Tidy Towns Volunteers Nothing can stop this group of people who are intent on making Douglas the most beautiful village in Ireland. They have been painting eysores,

planting delightful containers full of flowers, and despite the setback of the flood – and the bad weather – are brightening up our living environment here in Douglas. They meet every Saturday morning from 10.30 to 12, and volunteers are always welcome. They will provide you with a high-viz jacket and a pick.Learn more about their work at their website www. douglastidytowns.ie.

The Value of Keeping Your Local Post Office By Frank Hanover When Douglas town centre flooded in the closing days of June and closed the shops at Douglas Village Shopping Centre among the most disadvantaged people affected were the 20,000 people who make their home in Douglas. Probably, you were one such person. A particular outcome of the effectively disastrous flood is that between June 29th and the Post Office reopening almost a month later on the 23rd of July, was that the people of Douglas had no Post Office unless they were in a position to travel by means of the Orbital bus service 219, for example, to Blackrock P.O. If people were Social Welfare customers or pensioners, they lost the advantage of the centre’s free parking while it was shut and the shelter that proved so necessary this summertime, to say nothing of any shopping that might have attended such a trip to Douglas Post Office. Clearly, such an absence of footfall has undoubted implications arising from it in an atmosphere where Post Office closures are the subject of scrutiny and against which backdrop businesses local to the Post Office were pressed to the pin of their collar commercially. There is in fact a consistent attempt on the part of An Post to compete with Post Offices by means of online services accessed remotely and for post offices as well as their agents to be closed down. In this light it seems un-accidental that when you take a trip to Skibbereen on the bus you’ll find a large billboard outside the town of Clonakilty asking the traveller to support the non-closure of the local Post Office in that no less flooded place. All this invites serious questioning; what happens to towns that lose their Post Office? What can people use their Post Office for? What needs to happen in a community so that the amenity a Post Office provides is not squandered or lost to the internet, assuming Post Office customers have access to such remote means and limited personal advice? To answer these questions Douglas Postmaster Bill Jones took time to talk with me about the history of post offices in Ireland and what it is that Douglas Post Office actually does. The services provided by this particularly disadvantaged social service that many agencies and decision makers regard with such ambivalence is an array as impressive as it is exhaustive. At your local Post Office you can pay bills to no fewer than 160 creditors, pay Gardai road traffic and public order offences and fixed penalties, apply for a passport, expedite the acquisition of your passport and buy mobile telephone credit from all popular providers. You can make payments to your AIB or NIB account at the counter, collect your Job Seeker’s Allowance or Disability Allowance or your state pension. You can make International money transfers. You can make investments, buy stocks and bonds as well as buy stamps and post letters. What this implies is that there are minimally two hundred (200) services that your local Post Office provides which may not be accessed unless you go around to myriad individual outlets. What this story taken to heart confirms is the fact that a rearguard action is being fought by local Postmasters that Douglas can ignore at the peril of an even more fractured and divided society or community than is currently the case. So what’s to be done? Voters vote and political representatives respond in an affirmative way if they wish to continue being political representatives. No less, your individual needs should be considered. Your Post Office is yours. Retain it.

Returning to School – Advice for Separated Parents This year many parents will be dealing with the emotional and financial stress of separation as well as preparing their children for the new school year. Parents and children may both feel anxious about returning to school after a family separation and many children will be returning to school this year for the first time after their family has separated. No matter what your access arrangements might be, and whether your separation occurred years ago or recently there is no easy answer when it comes to co-parenting during the school year. Unfortunately it is not uncommon for separated parents to disagree over the care of the children and these disagreements can arise particularly when the children are returning to school. Where there is dispute between parents regarding the care of the children,

access arrangements are usually put in place detailing the specific dates and times that the children are with each parent. These are usually called access and custody arrangements. This is not to be confused with guardianship. Guardianship means the rights and duties of parents in respect of the upbringing of their children. A guardian has the right to make all major decisions affecting the child’s upbringing, including choice of school, medical treatment, religious matters, health requirements and decisions about leaving the country. Guardians are responsible for the welfare of the child. Welfare includes the moral, intellectual and physical wellbeing of the child. Guardianship rights would include the right of each parent to have a say in the child’s schooling i.e. where they go to school and the right to

receive school reports etc. however it does not extend to who drops the child to school. This is governed by the custody and access arrangements between the parents. Where there is a high level of conflict between separated parents, coupled with poor communication, often the cooperation required to resolve issues that arise is completely absent. There are however some steps that you can take to make the return to school less stressful for all involved. 1. Find out if the upcoming school event is scheduled within your access time; 2. If not, attempt to reach agreement with the other parent so that you can attend also; 3. If necessary agree some ground rules with the other parent as to how you will both manage and behave during the event; 4. If such agreement cannot be reached and there is a high level of conflict between the parties then the parent would have to ask themselves whether they felt the event was of such high importance

to them and the child that both parents must attend. If so an application to the Court to vary the access arrangements may become necessary. The Courts are however very reluctant to make these decisions for parents and will use all means available to encourage the parents to resolve these issues directly. Issues around schooling can be a huge source of conflict for parents who have separated. Parents must understand that they have an obligation to the child to ensure that any conflict which they have with the other parent should not be inflicted upon the school and more particularly should not be inflicted on the child, whether at school or at home. A Healing Miracle for Burns: Keep in mind this treatment of burns is being included in teaching beginner fireman. First Aid consists of first spraying cold water on the affected area until the heat is reduced which stops the continued burning of all layers of the skin. Then, spread the egg whites onto the affected area.

SALE

One woman burned a large part of her hand with boiling water. In spite of the pain, she ran cold faucet water on her hand, separated 2 egg whites from the yolks, beat them slightly and dipped her hand in the solution. The whites then dried and formed a protective layer.

Gorgeous range of Mother of the Bride/Groom and Guests outfits

She later learned that the egg white is a natural collagen and continued during at least one hour to apply layer upon layer of beaten egg white. By afternoon she no longer felt any pain and the next day there was hardly a trace of the burn.

Only for the woman who loves BEAUTIFUL CLOTHES

10 days later, no trace was left at all and her skin had regained its normal color. The burned area was totally regenerated thanks to the collagen in the egg whites, a placenta full of vitamins.

Now On!

Home & G a r den Things to do This Week (The summer is about to leave us. Hopefully the weather of the future will be a lot more compatible. As usual we try to give you a few ideas on what might need doing in your garden this week. Not everything in this article may apply to your garden - but there might be something, if not this week maybe next week.)

Flower Garden

Greenhouse

Feed dahlias every fortnight to sustain flowering and build up tubers. Continue spraying roses and Michaelmas daisies with fungicide, as diseases are more likely now. Tie in new stems on climbing roses, arching them downwards to encourage flowering side shoots.

Remove a little shading from the glass as heat levels decline. Pot up springflowering bulbs for early colour indoors. Take conifer cuttings with a heel for rooting in a cold frame. Continue taking cuttings of all tender perennials, indoors and out, as they will root well before winter.

Kitchen Garden

Finish repotting, house and greenhouse plants in the next 2 weeks; after that, wait until Spring. Finish thinning grapes. Feed cacti for the last time, but continue watering in warm weather. Take cuttings of scented pelargoniums in gritty compost.

Make new strawberry beds and transplant rooted runners to new positions. Check sweetcorn regularly and gather as soon as it is ripe. Trim chives and pot up for winter use. Sow a large leafy turnip variety for winter “greens”. Start covering endive with a large pot or dinner plate to blanch the hearts in 3 - 4 weeks time.

Lawns & Hedges Rake lawns in the next week or two to scratch out thatch and other dead or loose material.

• This week's garden Winner Pat and Moira Butler Shamrock Lawn

Congratulations to this weeks winner Pat and Moira Butler of Shamrock Lawn. Pat and Moira win a 50 Euro voucher from Kiernans Garden Centre, Douglas Court. Our Summer Gardening Competition has come to an end for this year. We would like to thank all those who submitted entries, congratulate all the winners and our condolences to those who didn’t make it this time. But there’s always next year! In spite of our poor weather the standard this year was exceedingly high, and trying to choose a winner each week was a very difficult task and there were many worthy entries that time simply ran out on, but rest assured; in today’s climate every gardener is a winner.

Water Garden Start thinning vigorous marginal and bog garden growth, especially where species have finished flowering.

In General Spray new ground with glyphosate for maximum impact. Prepare sites for new evergreens of all kinds • A previous garden winner Jean Rowe Glounthaune

Minister Kathleen Lynch TD visits St. Luke’s Home, Mahon Kathleen Lynch TD, Minister of State for Disability, Older People, Equality & Mental Health paid an official visit to St. Luke’s Home, Mahon(August 01, 2012) for The Home’s annual Family Fun Day.

The event, which is now in its 4th year, is being coordinated by staff of Pepsico Ireland and is a highlight in the residents calendar as it provides an opportunity for them to come together socially with their children, grandchildren, friends and carers to enjoy a Family Fun-filled Day. The day kicked off with 30 volunteers from Pepsico Ireland visiting residents and staff within the five units of The Home engaging in the numerous therapies and activities that take place there each day. Games and activities (including traditional egg n spoon races, tug O’ war, 5 a side soccer and many more) commenced at 2pm on arrival of Minister Kathleen Lynch and continued well into the afternoon. Speaking at the Family Fun Day, Minister Lynch said; “On behalf of the staff, volunteers and those who live at St. Luke’s Home, I want to extent a huge thank you to Pepsico for their contribution to the community in time, participation and support. When we start planning for the future we need to start planning for our future and we need to remember that St. Luke’s Home and days like this are so important.”We don’t always thank large corporations and it’s only fair to acknowledge that on all those residents who will benefit from Pepsico’s involvement.” All the staff, their families, supporters,

relatives and volunteers battled it out in the various challenge events and great fun was had by all. The day culminated in the Great Pepsico Challenge which involved the Pepsico volunteers in a 5 a side soccer knockout competition. Oonagh O’Driscoll, Director of Fundraising at St. Luke’s Home; “At St Luke’s Home, we specialise in the care of older people with Alzheimer’s and other forms of Dementia, a disease which is very much on the increase. Today in Ireland, there are 44,000 people living with dementia, by 2026 this figure will rise to 104,000, so really everyone should have some knowledge on the subject and basic tools on how to cope and care. We would like to thank all the staff from Pepsico who came out today and coordinated this event for the residents at St. Luke’s Home as keeping residents mentally and physically active can help prevent or delay many diseases including Alzheimer’s and other forms of Dementia.” Pepsico is an organisation committed to making a positive impact in the communities in which it is based and the Family Fun Day at St. Luke’s Home is a perfect fit for Pepsico’s ‘Power of One’ Campaign as it aims to demonstrate all the benefits of getting out and about and having some fun with the local community.

A Tiny Handful of Promise By Norris Burkes It was 3 a.m. when the doctors flooded her room with light. Still numb from pain medication, the new mom fumbled for her glasses, squinting to distinguish the blur of white coats. The doctors were saying something about needing some papers signed—now. Twenty miles and twenty minutes away, a high-pitched beep suddenly filled my dark bedroom. Numb from the early hour, I fumbled for my glasses too so I could read the number on my pager. Still groggy, I managed to get dressed while placing a whispered phone call to the maternity ward. “Chaplain, we have a baby who’s not doing well,” the nurse reported. “The parents are asking for you to please come.” Maternity wards are the happiest places on earth—except when they are the saddest places on earth. The contrast in patient stories on the floor can be jagged and capricious. Even as I enter a room of sobbing parents, I often will glance over my shoulder to see other families happily backslapping each other with congratulatory pats. As I stepped to the bedside, the couple told me of their journey through a problem pregnancy filled with frightening neonatal reports. Concerned doctors were seeking parental consent for a birth-day surgery. “Has God just teased us?” the parents wondered aloud. Would it help to baptize the baby? Can you baptize her, Chaplain? Now, you have to understand: in my tradition I don’t baptize babies. I asked the mother if she might have the strength to come with me to the neonatal intensive care unit (the NICU, which staffers pronounce “nick-u”). The NICU is a world of wires, IV bottles, tubes, and back-lit beds that remind me of the scene in the movie E.T. when scores of scientists and doctors examine the little alien. In close quarters, the doctors, nurses, and respiratory therapists squeeze through tangled tubes to deliver highly specialized health care to the tiniest people you’ll ever see. As we encircled the baby, the usually noisy NICU fell silent in readiness for this “emergency blessing.” Mom stood beside her tiny daughter, stroking the baby with her index

finger in an attempt to re-establish the sustaining love of the umbilical cord. Her finger seemed just long enough to maintain a fragile connection between her and this baby of faith. It was an image reminiscent of the fingertip touch between God and Adam in Michelangelo’s painting in the Sistine Chapel. In the E.T. movie, special-effects artisans attempted to recreate the scene using an extraterrestrial with a flashlight finger to deliver a healing touch to a child, but Hollywood could never paint this scene. With the touch of a single finger, Mom was sharing the hopes and prayers of a family. Unceremoniously opening a bottle of sterile water, I placed a drop on the baby’s forehead and asked that God “bless this child in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.” With that, Mom’s whimpers melted into weeping. And as she cried, she took her daughter’s tiny hand and, finding a spot that wasn’t wrapped, poked, or monitored, she placed a kiss in that tiny palm and whispered something into those little, curled-up fingers. Then, as if she had placed a thing of priceless value in her daughter’s grip for safekeeping, she closed it tight. This mother’s love reminded me of the miraculous way in which God whispers his love into the hand of each of us when we are born, placing there a promise that, no matter what, he will never let us go. (Romans 8:38–39 KJV). Even as a minister, I sometimes forget how personal and deep God’s love is for each of us. I often talk about the depth of God’s love, but it took a mother’s heartfelt whisper into a tiny hand to remind me that God is always there to love me, and all I need to do is reach out and accept it. I’ll never know the exact words this young mother entrusted to her daughter’s grip. But in the coming weeks of miraculous procedures and risky surgeries, the real miracle that was witnessed by all who would see it was how this little girl never released the grip of her mother’s promise. Three months after her birth, she went home a healthy little girl.

• Douglas U10 Gaelic Footballers, representing Cork and Munster who were crowned All Ireland Community Games champions on Sun 19th August at the Athlone IT. They defeated Erne Valley from Cavan/ Ulster in the semi final and went on the triumph over Ballyroan / Leinster in the final.

An Emergency Situation A man walks into a store followed by his 10-year-old son. The kid is flipping a coin into the air and catching it in his mouth. As they continue on someone bumps into the boy at just the wrong moment and the coin goes into his mouth and lodges in his throat. He immediately starts choking, and the father starts to panic. A well-dressed middle-aged and very-serious woman in a business suit is sitting at the coffee bar in the market reading her Wall Street Journal and sipping on her latte. At the sound of the commotion she looks up, puts her coffee down, carefully folds her newspaper and puts her purse on it. Then she gets up from her seat and strolls toward the boy, who is now turning blue. When she arrives, the woman takes hold of the boy’s testicles and squeezes gently at first, but then gets evermore firm. After a few seconds the boy convulses violently and coughs up the coin, which the woman deftly catches from the air. She then releases the boy, hands the coin to the father, and walks back to her seat in the coffee bar without saying a word. As soon as he is sure that his son is OK, the father rushes over to the woman and starts thanking her saying, “I’ve never seen anybody do anything like that before! It was fantastic. Are you a doctor?” “Certainly not,” the woman replies. “I’m a divorce lawer.”

Frankfield Boules

PLUMBER

Boules Blitz 2012 at Frankfield Petanque Cork

Boules, or more correctly titled, Petanque, is the national sport of France. It’s the game that one associates with people in black berets playing with steel bowls on the municipal pistes and on the gravel surfaces of the South of France, invariably accompanied by regular snifters of pastis, that wonderful aniseed potion. Apart from its romantic associations, the game of Boules is played competively all over the world. And in Cork, the home of Boules is at Frankfield House, on the hill above the Kinsale Road roundabout. The Boules Blitz is the principal competition event in the annual calendar of the Frankfield Club and indeed the biggest boules event in Ireland with three competitions held simultaneously over the week end of 25 th.26 th. August.

Male and female competitors, this year, came from Sweden, England, Northern Ireland, along with the entrants from Dublin, Kilkenny, Dungarvan and Cork. Winners of this year’s Complete Cuisine Gold Shield were Pierre and Jack di Pizzo, Park Petanque, Dublin and runners up were Patrick and Mary Ruff, Frankfield Petanque. The Frankfield Open Doubles Cup was captured by Paul and Tricia Murray, Frankfield Petanque with Rene and Padraic di Fusco, Dungarvan, in second place.
