Pastoral Letter “We must all do what we can to make the Church and society safe for children” - Bishop Buckley Following the recent publication of the findings of a Review conducted in the Diocese of Cork and Ross by the National Board for Safeguarding Children, I again offer my apologies to all who have suffered as the result of abuse by Church personnel. No apology, no gesture of repentance or sorrow can ever make up for the suffering caused to children and their families. I pray that the Lord’s healing power will give them peace. Every single victim has been offered access to counselling support and therapy offered by the Diocese. They were let down by people who professed the Gospel of Jesus Christ. There is no place in the Church for those who would harm the young. The purpose of the Review was to confirm that the Diocese manages all complaints in accordance with the guidelines issued by the National Board. The Board confirms that there was full cooperation and information-sharing with An Garda Síochána and the Health Service Executive and that they have been notified “of all concerns, complaints and allegations against priests that are known to the Diocese of Cork and Ross”. Garda vetting applications have also been processed for all priests of the Diocese as well as many lay people who are involved in Church activities. I welcome the positive outcome to this report and its recommendations which will further enhance our safeguarding service. The review will be a source of assurance to the people of the Diocese and a confirmation that the Diocese is taking its obligations in relation to child protection very seriously. Guaranteeing the safety of children is relentless and ongoing. To do this, we need a strong system of inspection and oversight and demonstrative evidence that the guidelines are being implemented correctly. I commend the National Board for its determination to fulfil the mandate given to it of devising and overseeing the implementation of best practice in safeguarding children throughout the Church. These structures of review and accountability have been proven to work very effectively. Structures have been put in place to reach out to every corner of the Diocese so that people will have full and adequate information on the

safeguarding of children and on what actions to take if concerns arise in relation to child abuse by priests or church personnel. Indeed, our concern for the safety of children is underpinned by the presence in every parish of child safeguarding representatives. All have undergone training in order to fulfil their safeguarding roles in the church. I thank the many people involved in our safeguarding service whose work ensures that all children in the Diocese are respected and safeguarded. Admittedly, safeguarding and child protection is everybody’s business. We must all do what we can to make the Church and society safe for children. The priest is in a very special position of trust and the people expect the highest standards of behaviour from those in whom such trust is reposed. It is our hope that these crimes of a small number of priests will not invalidate the good work of so many hard working priests in Ireland. The vast majority of priests are good men who continue to do their job to the best of their ability and, needless to say, are demoralised by the revelations. The task of repairing the damage and restoring trust and building hope lies with each one of us priests working hard through our priestly ministry. For the Christian community, prayer is an essential part of the journey to healing and renewal. People who suffered have told me at prayer services how much they value the prayers that are offered for them by individuals and parish communities. I am asking you to continue the prayers. My hope is that all our efforts will result in making the Church a safer place for children. We look forward with hope, trying to ensure that this will never happen again. Finally, if there are any people who have suffered in this way, I again invite them to contact me (021-4301717) so that everything possible can be done to help them. Alternatively, I invite them to contact “Towards Healing”, a counselling service which assists those who are victims of child abuse. Their telephone number is Freephone 1-80030-34-16. Praying God’s blessing on you at this time, Bishop John Buckley, Bishop of Cork and Ross

Poetry Corner with Ronnie McGinn
“Vers de société” is the name of a kind of light verse which comments on the social whirl and the various predicaments of individuals who are caught up in it. I believe it was Francis Stillman who said that; “Light and humorous verse are the effervescence of poetry”. Often serious at bottom, they take the comic view of life as opposed to the tragic; they aim to amuse (and sometimes edify) the reader, to make him smile or even laugh. Although the comic muse has apparently been downgraded in recent years, with a concurrent critical tendency to assign “importance” only to modern poetry of serious or tragic significance, still there is always room for a little fun!

What the Waitress Saw The young couple sat at the table, The waitress served them a meal, They looked so happy together, With feelings so hard to conceal, The waitress smiled at the couple, But really she longed for a chance, To be this happily married, And share in a great romance. Then suddenly for no reason, The man seemed to slide off the chair, The waitress but couldn’t help notice, When he was no longer there, And so she rushed to the table, And asked if all was ok? The lady smiled at the waitress, And here is what she had to say: “Please do not look under the table, There’s a reason why he’s on the floor, You see we’re not really married, And his wife just walked in the door.” Ronnie McGinn Send your poem to ‘The Poetry Corner’ / Douglas Post, Unit 29 C, St Patrick’s Mills, Douglas or you can email it direct to ronniemcginn@ eircom.net. Alzheimer’s Disease Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia — the loss of intellectual and social abilities severe enough to interfere with daily functioning. In Alzheimer’s disease, healthy brain tissue degenerates, causing a steady decline in memory and mental abilities. Today, 44,000 people and 50,000 carers in Ireland are impacted by Alzheimer’s disease or related dementia. Although there’s no cure, treatments may improve the quality of life for people with Alzheimer’s disease. Those with Alzheimer’s — as well as those who care for them — need support and affection from friends and family to cope. Alzheimer’s disease may start with slight memory loss and confusion,

but it eventually leads to irreversible mental impairment that destroys a person’s ability to remember, reason, learn and imagine. No one factor appears to cause Alzheimer’s disease. Instead, scientists believe that it may take a combination of genetic, lifestyle and environmental factors to trigger the onset of symptoms. While the causes of Alzheimer’s are poorly understood, its effect on brain tissue is clear. Alzheimer’s disease damages and kills brain cells. Currently, there’s no cure for Alzheimer’s disease. Doctors sometimes prescribe drugs to improve signs and symptoms that often accompany Alzheimer’s, including sleeplessness, wandering,

anxiety, agitation and depression. But only two varieties of medications have been proved to slow the cognitive decline associated with Alzheimer’s. Cholinesterase inhibitors This group of medications — which includes donepezil (Aricept), rivastigmine (Exelon) and galantamine (Reminyl). Memantine (Ebixa) The first drug approved to treat moderate to severe stages of Alzheimer’s, memantine protects brain cells from damage caused by the chemical messenger glutamate. A healthy lifestyle may help prevent or postpone the development of Alzheimer’s disease. Because Alzheimer’s is most common in people over the age of 80, delaying the onset of the disease would increase the probability that people will die of other

Some researchers believe that lifelong mental exercise and learning may promote the growth of additional synapses, the connections between neurons, and delay the onset of dementia. End of Summer Festival The Ballinlough Youth Clubs hosted the “End of Summer Festival” on the 25th of August last. Despite weather worries and the odd shower the sun shone and crowds of people made their way to the Ballinlough Community Park for the day out. The stage was buzzing with activity all day long first with opening live band Vendetta, then to showcase the wonderful costumes for the fancy dress and when Monsieur Gusto performed his daring act of entertainment and escapism he had the whole audience enthralled. The workshops in pottery, card and butter making kept idle hands busy and throw the wellie was great fun to boot! The Super Slide, Buckin’ Bronco and giant obstacle course were a great hit keeping the children bouncing all day long. The OPE Physical Boot Camp was marvellous fun as well as the Karate, Tennis and Bowls workshops. The dog show,
puppet show and soccer skills were festival favourites while the kiddies carousel was a super new addition. The sing-a-long, dance-a-long tea party had people tapping their toes and singing tunes all night long, while the disco had teenagers party-rocking the night away. All money raised from the raffle went to Cork Penny Dinners and Scoil Aislinn. Congratulations to the Committee on another successful event. For information on upcoming events find us on Facebook at ballinloughyouthclubevents.
Belle of Ballinlough An integral part of the End of Summer Festival is the Belle. It has gone from strength to strength over the past 4 years with this year as no exception. 2012 was extra tough for our judges as all of the 12 Belles and 12 Escorts were absolutely fabulous. The competing Belles and Escorts took part in various events over the last month including a BBQ meet and greet, formal interviews at a glamorous social night out and dance lessons to perform at the tea party. Although all Belles and Escorts looked like winners only one could be crowned. The Belle of Ballinlough 2012 was Emma O’ Sullivan representing Escape Spa. The winning escort was Peter. Congratulations!

What would be of great assistance is that if a concerned member of the public witnesses such activity, would they drop in a note to the centre, giving details of the time the activity took place, and a brief description of the event, and those involved. We can then look through our CCTV footage. Cameras were installed last year, and have been a great help in helping us identify those involved and in passing information to the gardai. Mount Oval You and the Bollywood Lounge Frank K Hanover The Bollywood Lounge at Mount Oval village in Rochestown ((021) – 489 5333) is one of the glittering diamonds in Cork’s increasingly more discerned restaurant culture. An authentically diverse Indian cuisine experience, its delight becomes obvious in the kudos that the Bollywood Lounge attaches to the total experience you’ll have when you avail of the opportunity to book a meal and spend a while here. To say that the Bollywood Lounge is Cork’s best Indian restaurant is really to damn it with faint praise so lets consider what it is that you’ll understand for yourself when you try the Bollywood Lounge for a most memorable diningout event. The Bollywood Lounge is an elegant and tastefully laid out circumstance, light filled and airy yet also congenial, the whole effect suggesting that this is a place you can comfortably spend hours at. People have had wedding dinner’s here such is the level of friendly and accommodating service and importantly, the most rigorously applied standards of hygiene. What really sets the Bollywood Lounge apart from many other Indian restaurants however, is the degree to which the menu reflects a genius for understanding the very many regional variations of Indian cuisine and the restaurant kitchen’s ability to understand the herbs and spices particular to each food dialect. The subtly aromatic flavouring of Indian food is at the least subliminally obvious from the moment you arrive at the Bollywood Lounge and the more one visits Cork’s finest Indian
dining experience, the more ones intrigue for subtlety and flavour is engendered. Given the degree to which the diversity of Asian food has become much more prevalent and accessible in recent decades it’s worth the while of pointing out that the array of Indian food alone is of itself an entirely distinctive culinary art form utterly separate from say, Chinese food. It’s this absolute separation and the intensely loving nature that goes behind such dishes as for example aloo ghobi; a scintillating potato and cauliflower starter most typically, or daal which uses the lentil to delicious and subtle effects, or the tandoori (clay oven) style of meat preparation, which give such a number of Cork people -most of whom readily agree that the Bollywood Lounge is the best Indian restaurant they’ve experienced on this island- a delight in the distinction that characterises Indian food from all others.
Best Wishes to The Bollywood Lounge.
The Bollywood Lounge has a full drinks license and is also known as a weekend spot at which whole evening’s may be spent. A hundred yards away from the South Link on the Rochestown Road, take a right at Clarke’s Hill and drive half a mile into the hills above Rochestown before turning right to the shopping precinct at Mount Oval village. Once there you can’t miss the Bollywood Lounge such is its impressive appearance and frontage. After you’ve booked and visited the first time, its practically certain that you’ll come to see the Bollywood Lounge as a most desirable Indian experience.

Next month’s Céilí is on Saturday 13th October with music by the newly formed Ken Kelleher Céilí Band paying their first visit to Carrigaline.

The Miracle Prayer Sacred Heart
When my daughter, Kelli, said her bedtime prayers, she would bless every family member, every friend, and every pet, current and past. For several weeks, after we had finished the nightly prayer, Kelli would say, ‘All girls.’ This soon became part of her nightly routine, to include this closing. My curiosity got the best of me and I asked her, ‘Kelli, why do you always add the part about all girls?’ Her response, ‘Because everybody always finishes their prayers by saying ‘All Men’!’

The Future to Healing. ‘Think of your body’s energy system as being made up of streams, like a river that provides life giving water to its surrounding areas. These channels distribute revitalised energy to the surrounding area of the body,’ says Ger O’ Brien a practitioner in EFT. Emotional Freedom Technique or EFT is a meridian tapping techniques for relief of emotional and Physical pain. Ger continues ‘EFT is an emotional version of acupuncture without needles; the cause of all negative emotion is a disruption in the body’s energy system’. EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) is becoming known to many amazed users as a "modern miracle." It can dramatically relieve emotional disturbances along with many physical symptoms. It often works in minutes, its results are usually long lasting, and side effects are almost always positive. With remarkable consistency, EFT relieves symptoms by an unusual (but scientific) routine of tapping with the fingertips on a short series of points on the body that correspond to acupuncture points on the energy meridians. Where there is an imbalance, there is a corresponding blockage in the flow of energy through the meridian system.

Free mortgage advice will offer a lifeline for distressed homeowners Fine Gael Cork South Central Deputy, Jerry Buttimer, said the provision of free, independent financial advice for those who are in mortgage distress is a welcome development which will help homeowners in arrears to find a resolution to their financial situation. “The stress and anxiety of falling behind with mortgage repayments, and what that might mean in terms of losing the family home, is completely overwhelming. In my clinics I regularly meet people who are out of their minds with worry about how to get on top of their financial situation and to stop themselves from falling further behind with repayments. “The Government recognises the seriousness of this issue and has been working hard to help those in mortgage arrears to get to grips with the situation. The loudest message we have been sending is to encourage those who are experiencing difficulty not to ignore their financial problems, but to talk to their lender with a view to coming to a workable solution. “The announcement today by the Minister for Social Protection, Joan Burton TD, that free, independent financial advice is to be made available to homeowners, with the banks picking up the tab, will come as a welcome relief to many. “Obtaining financial advice will be part and parcel of reaching longerterm resolutions with lenders and will be provided by a qualified accountant, drawn from members of the main accountancy institutes in Ireland. The fact that the debtor is free to choose who provides that advice helps them to remain in control of the situation. “Banks covering accountant fees of up to €250 takes some of the heat off struggling homeowners in their attempts to come to an arrangement that will allow them to remain in the family home. Advice will be available on a county by county basis with 1,000 accountants expected to join the panel which will be available by mid-September. “There is no one-size-fits-all model when dealing with mortgage arrears. That is why a range of options have been worked out with banks and lending institutions, including split mortgages, the mortgage to rent, trade down forbearance and long-term interest only to help those who need it. Detailed information can be found at www.keepingyourhome. ie or through the Mortgage Arrears Information Helpline 0761 07 4050, Monday to Friday 9.30am -5pm.”
The tapping serves to release the blockages that are created when a person thinks about or becomes involved in an emotionally disturbing circumstance. When this blockage is released, the emotions come into balance. Once balanced, the person cannot get upset about the circumstance no matter how hard they try. The memory remains but the charge is gone. ‘EFT works where sometimes nothing else has with everything from trauma, depression, stress to back and neck pain’.

Home & G arden Things to do This Week You’ve got to put your back into the work you want to do and put up with the part of it that is a bore for you. You’ve got to do the drudgery and make the sacrifice. For success in any garden you’ve got to pay the price. Plan for the spring and plant lots of spring bulbs. As usual we try to give you a few ideas on what might need doing in your garden this week. Not everything in this article may apply to your garden - but there might be something, if not this week maybe next week.
Flower Garden Finish clearing summer bedding, stir in general fertiliser and level the ground. Start planting out spring flowers in showery weather, or water thoroughly after planting. Cut back exhausted herbaceous perennials, and divide overcrowded plants. Finish planting daffodils, and start on crocus, fritillaries and other smaller bulbs. Start planting evergreen shrubs and trees. Pull up exhausted hardy annuals; collect any seeds or scatter where plants were growing. Dismantle window box and container displays ready to replant with spring bedding and bulbs. Sow antirrhinums in a cold frame: sow some direct in alkaline free draining sites such as stone wall crevices. Stop deadheading calendulas and leave remaining seed heads to produce early-flowering seedlings. Arrange the dead foliage of peonies over their crowns to protect young shoots from spring frosts.
Kitchen Garden Test apples and pears regularly for picking and storing. Pot up parsley
plants for use indoors over winter. Sow angelica in a seedbed now, and transplant best seedlings next spring. Earth up Brussels sprouts or stake stems if they are becoming top-heavy.
Lawns & Hedges Start planting evergreen and conifer hedges. Cut new lawns when about 5cm (2in) high, and then leave until next spring. Plant drought - and shadetolerant ornithogalums, bluebells and chionodoxas at the base of hedges.
Greenhouse Bring jnside Indian azaleas and replace the top 5cm (2in) in the pots with fresh ericaceous (limefree) compost. Gradually decrease watering Hibiscus rosa-sinensis, and keep at 13 C (550F) over winter Bring In Cinerarias and other spring greenhouse plants. and keep cool in good light.
In General Make sure all tender plants, or divisions of them, are safely undercover. Drain !

Cllr. Seamus McGrath
Rochestown Road Improvements - Update As I previously reported, work is due to commence shortly on a number of improvements for the Rochestown road. The roundabout on the Rochestown road, near St. Patrick’s Church, will be subject to some upgrade work which is aimed at improving traffic flow. The Council expect to start work by mid September on the construction of a second approach ane for traffic entering the roundabout from the Clarke’s Hill / Coach Hill direction. This measure should help to alleviate some of the significant traffic congestion in the morning peak time. Furthermore, the Council intend to resurface parts of the Rochestown road which are in a particularly bad condition. I have been informed that the stretch of road from the roundabout to the bottom of Clarke’s Hill will be resurfaced and also intermittent stretches between Clarke’s Hill and Coach Hill. This work is to be welcomed, however more significant investment is required on this road which carries such as high volume of traffic.
Cllr. Seamus McGrath “If I can assist you with any issue, please do not hesitate to contact me.”

In The Loop with Peter Bowles D.J.
Rams’ Pocket Radio have announced a new Irish tour. Peter McCauley, a drummer, pianist, songwriter and jack-of-all from Lisburn, Northern Ireland is the key ingredient in Rams’ Pocket Radio. McCauley’s personal expression is the motivation of this project and with the works of the 1950’s product designer, Dieter Rams, in mind - purity, simplicity and longevity are the first concerns. For his live performances Peter is joined onstage by friends, and together they promise audiences an extraordinary musical experience. It’s been a busy year for Rams’ Pocket Radio. Initially coming to public attention with debut EP Dieter Rams Has Got The Pocket Radios, RPR performed an acclaimed set at Glastonbury 2011’s BBC Introducing Stage. In June of this year, RPR released a brand new boxed set of his previous 3 EPs entitled ‘Trajectories’ which features the 3 previous releases: Dieter Rams Has Got The Pocket Radio, Dogs Run In Packs and 1+2. Meanwhile, RPR played support slots for the likes of Darwin Deez, tUnE-yArDs and Marina and the Diamonds. RPR supported Snow Patrol on their extensive European tour – taking in Denmark, Sweden, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, Switzerland and France. A UK tour with Get Cape Wear Cape Fly followed, with RPR winning over new fans all the time. 2012 saw RPR playing festivals all over Europe, including Dutch festival Eurosonic, Germany’s Rock Im Park, Switzerland’s Gampel and Greenbelt in the UK. Peter was invited to perform for President Michael D Higgins at Aras an Uachtarain’s Garden Party and is gearing up to embark on a 6 week tour of the US with American band Gungor. During all of this, Peter has been hard at work with producer David Kosten (Everything Everything, Bat for Lashes), putting the finishing touches on his debut album – due for release in early 2013. RPR will be taking to the road in Ireland again, with a comprehensive tour this September which will see them play Cork on the 25th in Cyprus Avenue. Waterford electro-pop gang Solar Taxi are releasing a new single, “Gung Ho” on the 14th Sept. It’s to be single to be taken from their debut album Broken Brother’s Secret Bells (out 21st Sept). The tremendously catchy, bouncy and upbeat Gung Ho is out on 14th September. Solar Taxi released their EP ‘She Dies With Beautiful Teeth’ last year and captured folks’ attention with their musical pop romp, The Fool,

which was licensed for the soundtrack of the U.S. movie Exit Strategy. Since then, the band have been hard at work. They’ve gigged up and down the country. They’ve had the opportunity to share stages with 50 Cent, The Faithless Sound System and most recently Roxette in the O2 Arena in Dublin. But, just as importantly, they have also spent the last year and a half working on their debut album, which will hit the Irish shelves on 21st September. They play the Crane Lane on September 26th. Reformed Dublin punk act The Radiators From Space re-scheduled their cancelled gig last Saturday to play a special show for two fans who had travelled all the way from Japan and California to see them.

The band, who recently released a new album covering classic tracks by Irish beat and psychedelic groups of the 1960s and early ‘70s called Sound City Beat, were due to play their first gig in over five years at Dublin’s Academy venue but had to cancel due to the illness of founding member and Pogues’ guitarist Phil Chevron.
Sat. 15 Sept.
When the band learned that two fans, Carmen Santana from California and Yasunori Hoshino from Japan, had travelled all the way to Ireland to see them, they held a free impromptu gig in Dublin pub The Leeson Lounge and invited the diehard fans up on stage before the encore.
Sun. 16 Sept.
“We’d been rehearsing for the gig and when we heard Carmen and had come all that way to see us we thought f*** it, let’s just hold a gig anyway,” Radiators member Pete Holidai told press. “Carmen and Yasunori actually know the Radiators via their interest in The Pogues. We got them up on stage before the encore and introduced them to everybody. It was a nice moment.” The Rads played songs from their albums 1977’s TV Tube Heart, the Tony Visconti-produced Ghostown from 1979, 2006’s Trouble Pilgrim and Sound City Beat, as well as tracks from Holidai’s solo album The Devil’s Guitar. Also In the audience last Saturday night were former RTÉ newsreader Anne Doyle, Horslips’ Barry Devlin and Jim Lockhart, who works as a producer in 2fm, and BP Fallon. The Radiators from Space, whose lineup also includes U2 album designer Steve Averill (and the man who gave U2 their name), drummer Johnny Bonnie and bassist Paddy Goodwin, currently have no plans to reschedule The Academy show.

True Love As I drove home from work one evening, I suddenly found myself briefly looking towards the sky through my windshield and telling God, “Lord, I’m not getting married.” Afterwards, I felt a huge sense of peace and continued making my way home down Los Angeles’ 101 freeway, feeling sorry for all those other women in their forties who were practically howling at the moon every night because they wanted a husband so badly. Two years later, my life had changed quite significantly. After I had unpacked the last of the boxes, it dawned on me that while I had notified all of the appropriate parties regarding my change of address, I had yet to notify Bed Bath & Beyond. I called and was greeted by a very friendly voice. “Thank you for calling 1-800-GO-BEYOND. This is Jason. Jason proceeded to assist me with my change of address, but couldn’t hold back his response when he heard the name of the street was I now living on. “Screenland Drive? Sounds like you live near a bunch of movie theaters,” he said. I quickly responded, “Oh, actually, I live by all the studios, like Disney, Warner Bros. and NBC.” I’m a freelance writer, but I work a full-time day job for steady income, so I completely understand where you’re coming from. As a matter of fact, if you’re a musician, I can help you with your bio. Jason and I exchanged our DouglasPostAd_Layout 29/11/2011 website information and he1 completed
By Anji Limón Taylor my change of address request. When I got home that night, I had completely forgotten about my promise to check out Jason’s website. “Ah!” I thought to myself, “I forgot to check out that dude’s website.” I typed the URL into the address bar. Alright, so he was handsome and I noticed. Jason also had a couple of Grammy ballot nominations under his belt. Quite impressive, but the guy really did need some help in the writing department. His website was a mess. I responded to Jason’s e-mail and complimented him on his accomplishments. I then closed my message in a businesslike manner, stating that I was looking forward to possibly serving his writing needs in the future. The next night, there was another e-mail from Jason waiting for me. This time, he asked me if I was married with children. I started typing a response. “If you read my bio then you saw that I am studying to become a licensed minister, which is something I take very seriously. So, if these e-mails become inappropriate, I will let you know! I am not a desperate woman.” My keyboard was practically smoking! Then my phone rang. “Hello, Anji. This is Jason Taylor. I went to your website last night, and after reading your bio, I do believe you’re the woman I’ve been praying for.” Jason then began to speak in a language he knew I would understand 11:55 Page“Don’t 1 -- scripture. limit God, Anji.

Blackrock Historical Walking Tour, Saturday 22 September 2012 As part of ongoing research project into the local history of the southeast ward, Cllr Kieran McCarthy will conduct a historical walking tour of Blackrock Village on Saturday 22 September 2012, 2pm, leaving from Blackrock Castle (approx 1 ½ hours, free event). The earliest and official evidence for settlement in Blackrock dates to c.1564 when the Galway family created what was to become known as Dundanion Castle. Over 20 years later, Blackrock Castle was built circa 1582 by the citizens of Cork with artillery to resist pirates and other invaders. In the early 1700s, the prominent Tuckey family, of which Tuckey Street in the city centre is named, became part of the new social elite in Cork after the Williamite wars and built part of what became known in time at the Ursuline Convent. The building of the Navigation Wall or Dock in the 1760s turned focus to reclamation projects in the area and the eventual creation of public amenity land such as the Marina Walk during the time of the Great Famine. The early 1800s coincided with an enormous investment into creating new late Georgian mansions by many other key Cork families, such as the Chattertons, the Frends, the McMullers, Deanes and the Nash families, amongst others. Soon Blackrock was to have its own bathing houses, schools, hurling club, suburban railway line, and Protestant and Catholic Church. The pier that was developed at the heart of the space led to a number of other developments such as fisherman cottages and a fishing industry. This community is reflected in the 1911 census with 64 fisherman listed in Blackrock. Cllr Kieran McCarthy noted: “A stroll in Blackrock is popular by many people, local and Cork people. The area is particularly characterised by beautiful architecture, historic landscapes and imposing late Georgian and early twentieth century country cottages; every structure points to a key era in Cork’s development. Blackrock is also lucky that many of its former residents have left archives, census records, diaries, old maps and insights into how the area developed, giving an insight into ways of life, ideas and ambitions in the past, some of which can help us in the present day in understanding Blackrock’s identity going forward.”

G.A.A. FOCUS By Pat Harrington Pfizer Pitch and Putt Snippets from the local Notes by Brendan Hayes and National Scene Cork Hurling
Are we as Cork people Realistic, defeatist or arrogant? Arrogance is probably an over the top description of ourselves but we have this self belief when it comes to hurling which tells us we are going to win every time the red jersey appears on our “Field of Dreams”. Whilst it is the Tipperary folk who claim to be from the Home of Hurling we Corkonians hold claim to similar thoughts. Since 1966 the longest period Cork has been without an all-Ireland was1990 to 1999. Unless Cork achieves victory by 2013 that gap will again be reached. There is a certain realisation out there that Cork has fallen behind in the hurling pecking order in the last number of years at Senior, under 21 and minor levels. We have experienced a famine where silverware has been seriously evasive. I wonder if one has to be a part of a golden circle to become a selector. It was very noticeable this year at minor level; if my memory serves me right the minor intercounty management was made up of rural people – the team consisting to a large extent of rural representatives. Perhaps we need younger people involved in management with newer, fresher ideas. It is akin to something of a merry-go-round hopping from one selection committee to the next. Finally defeatism comes into the equation. There is strong opinion that the players just are not there and yes, Cork are short of players in some central positions. There is no doubt that there are some very talent players around but there would appear to be a serious shortage of ball-winning players. Winning the ariel duals is vital in today’s game. Lack of goals is a serious issue. Scoring no goals against Tipperary and managing no shot at goal against Galway is far from acceptable. Yes, goals were scored against Offaly and Wexford but these would be considered inferior opponents.
players may not see the red jersey again, though this may in some cases be of their own making, and again perhaps the selectors may simply dispense with their services. Undoubtedly the selectors will be seen at the county championships and I guess we can expect to witness new blood as it is tried out in the league 2013. Douglas
Well done to Douglas junior A & B football teams who both had victories over Nemo Rangers to reach their respective finals. The minor premier hurlers finished level with St. Finbarr’s after extra time. These fixtures took place while I was on holidays so I did not have the pleasure of viewing any of them. I certainly look forward to the minor replay. Congratulations
Congratulations to Douglas Community Games teams and their coaches, trainers and mentors on a very successful season, and on their performances in the all-Ireland series over the last two weekends. While the footballers won gold on the weekend of 18th the hurlers claimed silver this past week. Well done to all concerned. While I’m on the congratulations to Eoin on a superb performance footballers on Sunday, and Douglas man Eoin Cotter named on the panel.

Douglas G.A.A. Report By Seán McCarthy 08/09/12: Douglas 2-14 Newmarket 0-04 (Senior Football C’ship):
After last weeks exit from the senior hurling championship, the Douglas footballers were in need of a lift and the senior footballers duly obliged with a convincing win over Newmarket at Mallow on Saturday evening. Interestingly, it was dual players who were involved in last weeks hurling defeat that contributed most to this weeks football victory as Odhran Mulrooney and Mark Harrington dominated the midfield exchanges while youngster Alan Cadogan was outstanding in attack. It is never easy to predict where Douglas intend to utilise Eoin Cadogan but the decision to play him at full back proved a judicious one as his presence thwarted several Newmarket attacks. Captain Killian Hogan, Alan Cadogan, Finbarr Desmond and Mark Harrington contributed to Douglas’ early 0-05 to 0-02 lead and when Kevin Murphy tacked on another few points without reply before the interval Douglas
were looking comfortable. The crucial score of the game was grabbed by Mulrooney after thirty six minutes when he culminated a run deep into the heart of the Newmarket defence with a cracking delivery to the roof of the net. Late in the game Shane McCarthy scored another Douglas goal but by that stage Douglas had already cemented their place in the championship quarter final against the winners of the Dohenys and Duhallow clash. 09/09/12: Douglas 0-08 Passage 4-11 (Junior “B” Football C’ship Final):
Passage took the honours in the final of the Junior “B” football championship played at Ballinlough on Sunday morning. Passage were aided by the breeze in the first half and they exploited this advantage with early goals. Passage confirmed their superiority with a series of excellent second half scores. Douglas’ scoring contributions were courtesy of Phil Holland (4 points, Colm Lucey (3 points) and Eoin Heffernan (1 point).

Progress or Not?
Without doubt we have seen huge progress – a league final appearance and reaching an all-Ireland semifinal. A number of new players were blooded, giving good experience to a new generation of hurlers. The league was, in my view, slightly misleading. It has not the same intensity as championship hurling. Some players who have appeared very good in the league struggled to find the same form in the championship. The management were careful in nursing the young recruits along. Some of the older

The Hall got their schoolboys era off to a winning start after coming from behind to beat the hosts 3-1 in a hard fought game played in Ballyvolane last Sunday lunchtime. The Hall were left to wonder at the finish how they didn’t get something from this local derby encounter, which saw the hosts lead 4-1 at halftime. Despite Daragh Murphy heading in the opener after fifteen minutes, later in the contest, both Shane O’Connell & Adam Gould struck the crossbar, Joe McSweeney the upright & the keeper tipping a Chris Brennan over the top. In their first league match of the season, Corinthians started with real purpose and after five minutes went ahead when after some great passing involving Patrick Buckley, Conor Fagen and Mark Cronin saw a superb through ball find Rory Doyle who beat his man and finished past the keeper to the net. Corinthians had some great chances to add to their lead but narrowly missed on a number of occasions. This was to prove costly when Ringmahon were awarded a controversial penalty, their second in the game, the first being an even stranger decision which was missed. With the game tied at 1-1 and the home crowd finding their voice, Corinthians redoubled their efforts and after a number of near misses, Jaze Kabia scored with a header from Mark Cronins corner. Corinthians saw out the rest of the game and were happy to collect the points from a very difficult game. Alan Kelleher, Conor Russell, Ger O Mahony, Padraig Nash, and Jack O Sullivan were solid in the defense, whileTony Brophy, Daniel O
Donovan and Colin O Mahony linked well in midfield. Under 15, Premier Dvision Ballincollig 2 Corinthian Boys 2
The opening game in defence of our title was a hard fought encounter, with neither side dominating the game, Corinthians deservedly went 1 up after 25 mins when new signing Chris Og Jones broke down the right side of the penalty box and shot past the Ballincollig keeper, David Dalton (hit the upright) and Colin O Brien (narrowly missed) had chances but it remained 1-0 at half time. Corinthians went 2 up when Dean Swords speculative cross from the left sailed pasted the keeper. Shorty afterwards Ballincollig got 2 goals in a minute, to draw level. A fair result Stephen Jermyn, Mark O Leary (Jack Murray 65mins) Alex O Driscoll, Bryan Cotter, David O Regan, Ross Welch, Chris Og Jones, Harry Shanahan (David Lynch 60mins) Dean Swords, David Dalton, Colin O Brien. Division Two Buttevant 4 Corinthian Boys 3
We gave ourselves way too much to do in the game going 4 down in the first 30 minutes or so. We were severely punished for allowing the opposition space and time on the ball and showing them too much respect. Just before half time Mark O Regan gave us a glimmer of hope with a well placed free kick into the top right hand corner. The second half proved better as in true Corinthians spirit the lads rallied and upped their game considerably. Another Mark O Regan free kick pulled it back to 4- 2 and when Aaron Purcell was fouled when straight through on the keeper, O Regan again stepped up to complete a hat trick from the penalty spot. Buttevant were worried from then on but Corinthians despite tactical changes could not force the equaliser and it was the home team who welcomed the final whistle the most. Best for Corinthians were Mark O Regan, Colm Power, David Smith and Mikey O Doherty.
