Looking for Singers Looking for something to start your week off on a high note as the long evenings draw in? Winter evenings are here and you may be wondering how to fill them. Mad Pride Ireland Mad Pride Ireland workshops are being coordinated by David McCarthy, son of John McCarthy, who started the Mad Pride movement. They will continue to engage the community on mental health issues and these will be held every 2 weeks at Douglas Community Centre as follows: 28th Nov., and 12th Dec. from 7.309. Ballinlough Community News With Mary Cremin Christmas Concert Ballinlough Youth Clubs are busy putting the finishing touches to their programme for the Christmas Concert which will be held this year in the Community Centre on Sunday 9th December at 7.30 p.m. Tickets, at a very reasonable €5 each, offers great value and should be snapped up very quickly. Be sure to buy your’s early! The organising committee have managed to persuade a number of very well known local artists to perform on the night and as in previous years there will be something for everyone - singing, comedy,etc and of course the cuppa, mince pie and chat. Spook Parade Ballinlough Youth Clubs hosted their third annual Halloween Spook Parade on Sunday 28th October. Participants

(all dressed for the occasion) and their parents were entertained by a comedy/puppet act as they waited to register. Very quickly all of the 150 available children’s places were allocated and there were a number of disappointed “would be” participants. The parade left the Canon Horgan Youth Centre and made its way along the route where participants were met by various creepy and ghostly characters who had their stories told. These included Slugworth with the long red hair, the spirit who had her brains eaten, the wife who spent her nights searching for her lost husband, the butcher of Ballinlough, the ghost who could be seen by participants but not by the narrator and many, many more. They also enjoyed an “Images of Halloween” display and the highlight of the parade – a performance of Thriller by members of Junior Youth Club, Nicki’s Dance Studio and Dracula who arose from his coffin! Participants returned to the decorated Youth Hall where they took part in a number of Halloween games - bobbing and snap apple, toss the coin in the pumpkin, the touch and smell game, ring the witches’ hat, piñatas etc., A great night was had by all.

Radical Reform Document for the Health Sector Patients to be placed at the centre of decision making, ensuring faster, fairer service delivery Fine Gael Chair of the Oireachtas Committee on Health, Jerry Buttimer TD, has welcomed the publication of the radical healthcare reform document by the Department of Health. The document, entitled Future Health: A Strategic Framework for Reform of the Health Service 2012-2015, sets out the roadmap for the overhaul of our healthcare services so that value for money and appropriate service delivery can be achieved. “Future Health details 48 actions for reform; it is aimed at delivering a changed health service which meets the changing needs of our population. There are many challenges facing our health service including an aging population and an increasing incidence of chronic illness. This framework outlines how the health service plans on meeting those challenges. “The radical reform agenda being carried out by Minister Reilly will not happen overnight. This Government was handed a health service that was creaking at the seams and which had money thrown at it as the solution to all its problems. The Irish people, quite frankly, deserve better. “It is the Government’s intention to create a single-tier health service which is supported by Universal Health Insurance and where no distinction between public and private patients exists. Outcomes for patients will be improved, free access to GPs will be available, as is the case in other countries, and there will be better management of chronic illnesses. “We have no choice but to do more with less, but that aside, it is high time we had a healthcare system that worked for, instead of against, us. Healthcare staff, consultants and, most of all, the patient, who should always have been at the heart of the system, deserve it. I have no doubt that this intention can and will become a reality under Dr. James Reilly TD.”

Lynch’s app launched into front row Ciarán Lynch, Labour Deputy for Cork South Central, has launched his own app which will enable smart phone owners to communicate their concerns in real time to Deputy Lynch. Deputy Lynch’s app was launched today in Douglas, Cork by former Munster and Irish International rugby star, Frankie Sheahan. Speaking at the launch of his app, Deputy Lynch said: “The idea behind designing my app is firstly to respond to the changing and evolving trends in communications and secondly to better enable contact between the public and myself. “I have always valued the need for politicians to be both available and to listen to the public views and concerns. I would see the use of this app as complimenting the more traditional forms of engagement I have with the public at my on-going weekly advice centres.” Launching the app, Frankie Sheanan said: “I am delighted to be launching this app on behalf of Ciaran today. I believe it is very important that the public feel connected at all times with their local representatives and this app is yet another way for people to make this contact.” The app is free to download and use. It allows the user to report local issues to their representative quickly and easily from their phone. It also links together Deputy Lynch’s social media platforms and website.

The Cork Youth Orchestra is having a Ball this year! As soon as the Remembrance Tree goes up in the shopping centre it reminds us of the essence of the Christmas spirit and also provides a simple yet poignant way of remembering loved ones amid the hustle and bustle of the Christmas season. You are welcome to write your personal message on a card and this will be placed on the tree. It is a time to reflect and a time to remember loved ones in a special and simple way with each card having its own story of love and sadness, you may also write the name of your loved one in a special book, which will be placed on the altar in St Columbas Church and be prayed for at mass, - if you would like to volunteer an hour or two a week you can contact me on -4363867. Next Tuesday 4th December the annual inter-community quiz takes place in City Hall, sponsored by Evening echo and City Council, the main objective of the quiz is the integration of different community groups, last year 32 such groups came together, each team consisted of four people, two older people linked with two secondary school students. The students enjoyed meeting older members of the community in a fun filled atmosphere. The quiz also affords the various community groups the opportunity to meet exchange ideas and contacts and benefit from each others experience and expertise, it is a wonderful social event but very serious as all teams want to win the Magnificent Perpetual Trophy of our own “Corks Echo Boy”, with all members on the winning team receiving Echo Boy bronze replicas. The City council have sponsored beautiful plaques for second and third places with the Cork Coat of Arms inscribed. Ballyphehane are defending the title which they won last year, all welcome to come along on the night and support your team. As an added treat for our Young at Heart Christmas Party - The Kiely -Walsh Dancers will performing for us on Dec 2nd in Rochestown Park Hotel. Don’t miss it ! Winning Time For Christ King School In Sports & Debates November has been a very successful month on the sporting and debating fields for the girls of Christ King Girls secondary school. The school’s Senior basketball Team overcame Coláiste an Phiarsaigh in the Cup and also triumphed against North Monastery in the Senior A League. In another basketball success, Christ King’s Junior Basketball team won their game against Presentation Tralee by 20 points. The Senior football team beat Beara Community College in the Munster cup 1st round and the Junior Soccer Team beat Tramore 11-0 and the 1st Years won the Cork Area Futsal final. Also the Junior hockey team beat Ashton Comprehensive school. Aisling McDonald, Emma O’Riordan, Clara Hurley, Ciara Lynch Róisín O’Halloran and Ciara Hickey were presented with their Silver Gaisce awards at a ceremony in UCC continuing Christ King’s fantastic tradition in these awards. In debating, Angela O’Callaghan and Laoise McGinn, Transition Year, went through to the next round of the Philosoph Debates at UCC while Saoirse Goulding, Laoise McGinn and Angela O’Callaghan won the first round of the Mental Health debating/ public speaking competition.

Juggling it all Early in 1994, I gave birth to my first son. At the time I was the Personnel Manager for a roofers’ merchant company in London. I loved my job and there was no question that I was going back to work after my baby was born. I was so proud being a working mother because I was the 90’s woman; I had it all. I subscribed fully to the ethos of She magazine whose motto was Juggling It All and urged women like me, ‘Yes you can have your cake and eat too’ and ‘Yes your children do know you’re their mother even though they spend less of their waking hours with you than they do with their child minder’ because ‘It is vitally important for your self esteem that you have a career’ and ‘It is important that your children see that you have a life other than them’. But after being back at work a few months, the truth was although I had my feet firmly planted in both worlds, I felt I had half of each and it added up to nothing. In a male dominated work place, I was expected, at very short notice, to attend meetings in Bristol at 4pm which made it impossible for me to get back up to London for 6pm to collect my son.

Neither was I spending any time with my son who slept in the car all the way home and again once he had his dinner. I was miserable. Something had to give but to give up work was to admit failure so I plugged on. When my son was 18 months old salvation came. The company decided to relocate its headquarters to Cambridge, a two hour commute which even I had to admit was ridiculous. Manfully, I accepted redundancy but inside I was jumping for joy: the decision was made for me. I still work but I do it on a part time basis now. And as for the editor of She magazine, I read in a newspaper some years ago that she had a nervous breakdown from juggling it all.

My childminder was fantastic but she had me warned from the beginning that if I arrived so much as a minute past 6pm, she would leave my son out on the doorstep. I didn’t think she’d really do it but she was so moody I didn’t want to take the chance. Eventually I plucked up the courage to challenge the timings of these meetings and make them more childfriendly but I discovered in other ways being a full time working mother is

Home & G arden Things to do This Week Christmas is coming and daylight is in short supply, but a gardeners work is never done, As usual we try to give you a few ideas on what might need doing in your garden this week. Not everything in this article may apply to your garden- but there might be something, if not this week maybe next week

Flower Garden Protect hellebore flowers from frost and snow if we get any, with cloches. Shorten tall buddleia stems by half if snow is likely, and finish pruning in the spring, Check Iris unguicularis regularly for buds, and cut for the house where they last longer than outdoors. Start gathering holly and other evergreens for indoor decorations, and keep cool in a dark shed. In cold gardens mulch nerines, schizostylis, galtonia and other borderline bulbs with leaves, straw or conifer trimmings. Continue taking hardwood cuttings this month whenever the soil is workable. or root in pots in a frame. Dig up well-rooted suckers of sumach, robinia, cotinus and other shrubs, and transplant as new plants. Check cotoneaster, pyracantha and other Rosaceae shrubs for fireblight die-back; prune to clean Wood, and disinfect tools.

Protect autumn-sown peas and broadbeans with cloches, and earth up exposed plants for stability.

On Saturday 1st December from 10.00a.m. – 5.00p.m., Denis O’Sullivan from Ballynoe will return to Blackpool Library with his very extensive GAA collection. Denis has in his possession material relating to the late great Christy Ring, which has to be of the most complete collections in the country held by a private individual. It contains every available detail, photograph, report and newspaper cutting on Christy Ring’s “glittering career”. Also on

display will be another fantastic collection of photographs including hurling & camogie teams from all grades and from all corners of the country. Denis also affords visitors to his exhibition the opportunity to hear radio commentaries by the legendary Micheál O’Hehir, Micheál O Muircheartaigh & John Cashman. In all, his collection comprises of 20 photo albums, 80 audio cassettes of radio recordings, 71 DVDs & 65 CDs. Admission is free & all are welcome.

Dancing in Rathcormac Inn The craic is mighty for the last few Wednesday nights at the set dancing class in the Rathcormac Inn from 8.30pm to 10.30pm. One of the dancers said “I thought that I might have forgotten everything over the summer but Fionan helped us bring it up to the front of our memory again very easily. Gospel Choir Carrigaline Gospel Choir are busy rehearsing and preparing for their Christmas concert in Carrigaline Church on Sunday 16th December, at 7pm. Mens Shed The activities in the Mens Shed are becoming more numerous and full of variety. Last Wednesday 13 members attended the creative writing course given by Afric Mc Glinchey of the VEC. The course continues for the next two weeks and will be followed at the end of November and early December by a two-week course on cookery for men. On Wednesday also two members attended the health and safety course in Midleton organized by SECAD. A big team turned up on Thursday to help erect the Polytunnel and great interest is being shown by many members who are joining the gardening project. Planning for the official opening and blessing on Saturday December 8th is progressing. Meanwhile visitors are welcome Monday to Saturday. The Mens Shed is open to men of all ages who may be interested in or like to work with other men in any of a wide variety of projects. Céilí Mór The atmosphere was electric at the monthly Céilí Mór in |Carrigaline GAA Pavilion on Saturday last with Tim Joe and Ann who were in fantastic form. The Carrigaline Camogie team who were celebrating their successful year in the lounge joined in the fun and created great excitement in the Siege of Ennis. Dancers travelled from all over Munster to the event, in all nine nationalities were represented. The December Céilí Mór is on Saturday 8th. The Hall, which is recognized as being the premier venue in the country, will be specially decorated for the Christmas season and for the celebration of 16 years of the Carrigaline Céilí Mór.

The Gathering Ireland 2013 was launched in May last with the plan to get hundreds of thousands of visitors to Ireland. The country and the people of country invite family and friends home to Ireland. Jim Miley, Project Director of the Gathering Ireland at a recent meeting said “The Gathering Ireland 2013 is a people’s project. It’s all about you, your family, your neighbours, your sports club, your college, your place of work, in fact, whatever community or group you belong to”. He asked people to plan special events to highlight what is great about your town and county. At a promotion meeting in the Midleton Park Hotel representatives from the various parishes in South and East Cork were asked to come foreword with ideas to get people with Irish roots to visit Ireland next year. It has been proposed that Carrigaline should run a festival in 2013. Meanwhile people can be thinking up ideas to get visitors from abroad to come to Ireland for the Gathering.

Scór is the cultural activity of the GAA clubs over the winter months. It gives members who may not be proficient in hurling or football the opportunity to represent the clubs on stage. The Scór competitions comprise of figure and set dancing, solo singing and ballad groups, musical group, recitation, quiz and novelty act. Do you want to scór for your club? If so get involved. The first competition in the Carrigdhoun division is Scór na nÓg i.e. under 17 years on 1st January 2013. The south East final is fixed for the Marian Hall, Ballinhassig on Saturday 24th November. Aifreann Gaeilge Attendances and the responses at the monthly Aifreann Gaeilge are increasing and getting stronger every month. Fr. Charlie Nyhan who has excellent Irish was the celebrant. Aidan Hurley did the readings while six pupils from the Gaelscoil read the ‘Guí an Phobal’. The Cór Gaeilge accompanied by John Paul Tattan added greatly to the liturgy of the Mass. The next Aifreann Gaeilge will be celebrated on Sunday, 8 th December. Cork Camogie Fund Raiser Cork Camogie are holding a Bingo Session at St Finbarr’s GAA Club on Sunday December 2nd at 7.30pm and the night is in aid of the fund raising for the Castle Road dressing room development. A lot of hard work and effort went into getting the Castle Road facility up and running and they are calling on all supporters of camogie to come along to the Barrs and support them with the push to bring the final phase of their plan to fruition. The Camogie board are to be complimented on the superb facility that they have in place at Castle Road and anybody who has played on the pitch agree it is one of the best in the county. Since the pitch opening mid 2008 temporary dressing rooms are in use but the board hope to finish the development by the end of 2013 and County Board

Chairperson Marion Mc Carthy is calling on Camogie and non camogie supporters to come along on the night. “We are eager to get the final phase of our complex completed and make it one of the best camogie grounds in the country, times are tough and money is tight but we have got huge support for all our fund raising ventures so far and once again we hope that we will have the support of everybody. There is huge goodwill towards Cork Camogie and we are hugely grateful to everybody who has and who continue to support us and we are hoping to see big crowds on December 2nd for our Bingo Night at the St Finbarr’s club in Togher. Douglas Community School athletes competed at the 2nd leg of the Munster Juvenile Cross-Country championships held at Waterford IT over the weekend. It proved to be a very tough course with some long hills and mucky patches. Alan O Donovan was one of the stars of the day finishing in 2nd place in the u13 2500m race. The boys u15 team came 3rd led by great runs from John Stout, Sean Barber, Daniel Hurley, Luke Horgan and Richard Santry. Our u17 team won the gold medals with

outstanding races from Liam Harris 2nd, Jamie O Connell 6th, Stephen Cotter 20th and Luke Varian 23rd. Finally the u19 team competed over the 6000m course and finished a superb 2nd led by John Durcan in 6th place and other great performances from Eoin Bourke 10th, Brendan Couch and Leon Domoney. The next races for the team is the All Ireland Cross-Country championships taking place in Rathoath Co Meath on November 25th.

College Corinthians Schoolboys Section Winter Street Leagues Starting in next week the Club will be running Winter Street Leagues for the Under 8 to Under 10 Age groups. The leagues which will take place at normal training times are open to existing members and to anyone who would like to join the Club for the leagues. The leagues will take place on the Corinthians All Weather Pitch. The times for the various Age groups are as follows. Under 8 (2005) Saturday 12.30pm to 1.45pm. Under 9 (2004) Saturday 3pm to 4.15pm. Under 10 (2003) Sunday 10am to 11.30am Under 12 Premier Division Corinthian Boys 2 Ringmahon Rangers 0 Corinthian Boys with a controlled and determined performance recorded their eight successive league victory of the season with a 2 – 0 win over Ringmahon Rangers. Corinthian Boys started well, they could have gone behind early, when following a great chance from a corner, a Ringmahon shot flew over the bar. Corinthian Boys deservedly opened the scoring after 10 minutes, when Fionn Molloy finished a good move with a fine strike, after beating the last defender. Corinthian Boys added a second 10 minutes later, when Adam Idah scored from a free kick with a wonderful strike from 25 yards. They continued to press for the remainder of the first half but failed to score. In the second half Corinthian Boys continued to threaten, but failed to score from a number of very good opportunities created through very good play. They never look in any danger of conceding a goal. Overall, Corinthian Boys were in control throughout the game and constantly threatened the Ringmahon Rangers goal. The team now moves on to play Carrigaline away in a top of the table clash next weekend. Division One Midleton 1 Corinthian Boys A 1 Corinthians and Midleton played out a highly entertaining 1-1 draw despite the strong wind and driving rain. Corinthians took the lead mid way through the first half when David Cotter chipped the keeper from 25 yards. Midleton equalised just before half time with a well struck shot into the roof of the net. Both teams had chances in the second half and Corinthians could have taken all three points after a Ben Lucey volley was brilliantly pushed around the post by the Midleton keeper. Under 13 Premier Division Corinthian Boys Midleton After last weeks defeat in the national cup this weekends game at home to Midleton was a chance for the Corinthian lads to get back to winning ways. From the start the home side took the game to the visitors and were rewarded early on with a goal from Jaze Kabia after some good work by Tony Brophy and Conor Fagen. Corinthians were two up after twenty minutes when a great ball from Colin O’Mahoney found Rory Doyle inside the box and he shot into the roof of the net. The second half started well for Corinthians and they went three Up after forty minutes when Padraig Nash and Mark Cronin combined to put Jaze Kabia in to finish from close range. With some fine defending from Conor Russell, Ger O’Mahony and Patrick Buckley there was no way back for the Midleton side at this stage. The home team finished on a high with a contender for goal of the season, a passing move which involved Jack O’Sullivan,Colin O’Mahony and Conor Fagen saw Daniel O’Donovan chip the ball over the Midleton defence for Jaze Kabia to slot home his third and Corinthians forth of the day.

The game ebbed and flowed for the remainder of the first half with any further goals. 11 minutes into the second half a defense error left Ringmahon back in the game, 3 minutes later, Ringmahon took the lead. Corinthians dug deep and when Harry Shanahan, crossed from the right Colin O Brien, flicked the ball to Chris Og Jones who made no mistake, our tails were up and went looking for the winner, the Ringmahon keeper, kept them in the game with some superb saves, however, with 5 minutes remaining, Colin O Brien, switched play to the opposite side to Harry Shanahan, who passed it to Mark Buckey who let fly with his left foot, to the top corner, give us a deserved win. Glen Rovers Camogie club Glen Rovers Camogie club are organizing a club reunion to celebrate 80 years of camogie in their club and it is also a night to honour the clubs minor county winning championship team who recently took the premier title for the first time in twenty three years and their under 15 team who won championship honours. Many players have passed through the ranks and it is impossible to contact everybody but the clubs is endeavoring to do this and are hoping to contact as many as possible.
