A distraught senior citizen Phoned her doctor’s office. ‘Is it true,’ she wanted to know, ‘that the medication you prescribed has to be taken for the rest of my life? ’ ‘Yes, I’m afraid so,’ the doctor told her. There was a moment of silence before the senior lady replied, I’m wondering, then, just how serious is my condition because this prescription is marked ‘NO REFILLS’.’

Festival funding will help Cork Gatherings Fine Gael Cork South Central TD, Jerry Buttimer, says that Fáilte Ireland funding for festivals will help make The Gathering 2013 a success. “Minister Ring has announced Fáilte Ireland is to provide €59,000 in funding for festivals across Cork. This funding will help to continue the success of these festivals and it will continue Cork’s reputation as a festival city. “The festivals which will benefit from this funding include Cork’s St. Patrick’s Day Festival, the Ocean to City festival and Cork Craft Month. Each of the festivals which will benefit have a strong reputation and are key drivers of economic activity, bringing people to Cork for social and recreation activities. “The Gathering 2013 is an initiative designed to particularly help increase tourism across the country. This festival funding from Fáilte Ireland will assist in delivering key events to attract visitors to Cork. “Locally, there is additional funding available from both Cork City and County Councils for Gatherings which will attract at least 10 overseas visitors. Each Council has access to €30,000 for local projects which, if they meet the criteria, can benefit from grants between €500 and €2,500. “The government has also secured funding from IPB Insurance which can be used for up to three flag ship events in the county. I hope that these initiatives will enable communities to participate in The Gathering and to ensure that, in Cork, it will be a success.”

Poetry Corner with Ronnie McGinn

Our poem this week vividly and immediately identifies with its subject and maintains a balanced if somewhat humorous aura throughout each verse. The poem does not rely on hackneyed expressions and the author has breathed new life into our understanding of Christmas as we may choose to look at it from a modern prospective. The choice of form and style blend perfectly with the mood of the poem. The originality of the poem puts it in a class of its own. It has always been my contention, whether it’s original or not I’m uncertain, that attention to detail is the difference between success and failure. Marion Horgan of Cobh, Co Cork, Ireland pays a lot of attention to detail in her writing. Not just in the big details but in the little ones that are obvious to us yet we never seem to pay them much attention. This comes across beautifully in her book ‘My Road’. Everyone should have a copy. Mine is never far from my bedside. If you have any problem obtaining a copy, please fell free to contact me and we’ll organize something. This week Marion has given us a very seasonal poem

said he put a motion to the Council on this issue and discussed it with the Manager who he hopes will set aside money for the necessary fencing. The community guards, Dan Cowman and Paul Riordan were highly praised for their efforts and the hot-line we now have to the gardai is very valuable.

Our AGM took place on Monday 26thth Nov. at 8 p.m. at the community centre. Paudie Martin, Coordinator of the Building Project, chaired the meeting as Chairman Billy Coleman is recovering from surgery. Paudie read out the 2011 AGM minutes and updated the attendees on the building project, explaining that one phase of the project had already been completed, which was the building of a firewall isolating the pre-school from the rest of the centre and upgrading of the pre-school facilities. A Pobal grant had been provided for this. Paudie encouraged people to come forward as volunteers as we have many events planned for the new year and we need people who can give of their time and talents, so that the work can be shared, and no-one need feel overburdened.

Tidy Towns Report: Brian Cassidy of Tidy Towns praised the result of Douglas 2012 Tidy Towns, who scored 266 points, a modest increase, but a good result when considering the damage to buildings in the village and havoc created by the terrible flooding at the end of June. As a reference point, he said Ireland’s tidiest town, Abbeyshrule, scored 312 points. He said Douglas scored over 70% in key categories like residential areas, landscaping, built environment and general impression. Low scores below 60% included wildlife, litter control, waste minimisation and road/streets/ back areas. He praised the work of our 20 active volunteers, drawn from several nationalities, including 2 from Ryan’s Supervalu, who rain or shine, come out each week to do clean-ups, and work on projects such as tree & shrub planting, painting of unoccupied buildings, removal of graffiti, repainting of old buildings. He welcomed new developments such as McDonald’s adoption of the Fingerpost roundabout and servicing of its landscaping. He also raised the issue of littering and how much of Tidy Towns volunteers time was taken up with collection and removal of same.

Financial Report: The financial report was read out by Michael Twohig, Auditor, and he praised the high standard of the accounts, adding that 98% of the receipts were vouched. He praised the work of treasurer, Nuala Keating. Reports from the various groups that operate from the centre were given. Many public representatives attended, Senator Deirdre Clune, Councillors Jim Lombard, David Boyle, and Seamus McGrath.

Vandalism/Anti-Social behaviour: Serious issues of concern were raised, such as the continuous issue of vandalism in the park, and the need to protect our centre and proposed new building from such acts. The Church Lane side of the Community Park needs fencing on the perimeter wall so that would-be intruders can be prevented from entering the park area after hours. Cllr David Boyle

Absence of Litter Warden: Brian said the absence of a Litter Warden was a serious problem; Cllr David Boyle suggested the Traffic Wardens may be able to double up for Litter Warden Duty which could alleviate the problem. Helen Fox said with the amount of litter being deposited on the streets of Douglas at present, fines for littering could provide a lucrative income for the council. Whooping cough Whooping cough (pertussis) is a highly contagious respiratory tract infection. In advanced stages, it’s marked a severe, hacking cough followed by a high-pitched intake of breath that sounds like “whoop.”

Symptoms Once you become infected with whooping cough, it takes three to 12 days for signs and symptoms to appear. They’re usually mild at first and resemble those of a common cold: Runny nose, Nasal congestion, Sneezing, Red, watery eyes, A mild fever and a Dry cough. After a week or two, signs and symptoms worsen. Severe and prolonged coughing attacks may: Bring up thick phlegm, Provoke

vomiting, Result in a red or blue face, Cause extreme fatigue and End with a high-pitched “whoop” sound during the next breath of air.

Causes Whooping cough is caused by bacteria. When an infected person coughs or sneezes, tiny germ-laden droplets are sprayed into the air and breathed into the lungs of anyone who happens to be nearby. Once inside your airways, the bacteria multiply and produce toxins that interfere with your respiratory tract’s ability to sweep away germs. Thick mucus accumulates inside your airways, causing uncontrollable coughing.

Diabetes, what do I do now?

Risk factors Whooping cough is thought to be on the rise due to the fact that the whooping cough vaccine you receive as a child eventually wears off, leaving most teenagers and adults susceptible to the infection during an outbreak.

Treatments and drugs Infants are typically hospitalized for treatment, because whooping cough is more dangerous for that age group. Treatment for older children and adults usually can be managed at home with Antibiotics. Antibiotics kill the bacteria causing whooping cough and help speed recovery. Family members may be given preventive antibiotics. Cough relief. Unfortunately, not much is available to relieve the cough. Over-the-counter cough medicines, for instance, have

little effect on whooping cough and are discouraged.

Prevention The best way to prevent whooping cough is with the pertussis vaccine, which doctors often give in combination with vaccines against two other serious diseases, diphtheria and tetanus. Doctors recommend beginning vaccination during infancy. Because immunity from the pertussis vaccine tends to wane by age 11, doctors recommend a booster shot at that age to protect against whooping cough (pertussis), diphtheria and tetanus. B.A., M.Phil. INDEPENDENT COUNCILLOR, CORK CITY COUNCIL South East Cork City

Cllr Kieran McCarthy’s new book enitled Cork City Through Time comprises postcards from then and pictures of now. The book is co-written wwith Dan Breen of Cork Museum. Cork City, Ireland’s southern capital, is a place of tradition, of continuity, change and legacy, a place of direction and experiment by people, of ambition and determination, experiences and learning, of ingenuity and innovation and a place of nostalgia and memory. The pictures within this book provide insights into how such a place came into being and focuses on Cork as a place one hundred years ago.

Cork’s urban landscape or textbook is throbbing with messages about the past. As a port town, Cork was and still is strongly connected to the outside world – the international and small city ambitious in its ventures linking to a world of adventure and exploration. The city’s hills and troughs have created different perches for some of the city’s elaborate structures to stand on and for photographers to capture the city’s urban space. Cllr McCarthy noted: “The buildings and streets shown in the pictures give one access to the imagination and efforts of the people. The photographs within are key to understanding the human experience, sense of place and pride in the city, one hundred years ago. Views of streets, public spaces, churches, the docks, and an international exhibition all show the energy and drive of a city, the legacies of which still linger on the southern capital of Ireland”. The launch of Cork City Through Time in on Thursday 13 December, 6.30pm in the Cork Museum in Fitzgerald’s Park. All are welcome. The book is available to buy or order from any good Cork bookstore.

Festive Family Fun Run in aid of the Children’s Unit at Cork University Hospital The CUH Charity will hold a 7k family fun run, walk or crawl on Saturday, 15th December at 11am, along the Lough Mahon walk, leaving from and returning to the car park down from the Blackrock Castle. This fundraising initiative is in aid of their appeal to raise €1.5m for the Cork University Hospital (CUH) Children’s Unit. Entry to the walk will be €20 per adult, while children go free. All participants can register on the day and will receive a free Santa hat to ensure a fun and festive atmosphere at this worthy event. This event is a great opportunity to get all the family, including the four legged members, out and active while raising much needed funds for Munster’s largest and busiest hospital. All money raised will go directly to refurbishing the existing Children’s Unit, which will include the addition of isolation rooms, en-suite rooms and comfortable folding chairs for parents.

“We have just kicked off our fundraising appeal for the Children’s Unit and this walk/run is an event which we hope will be a bit of fun and something for everyone to enjoy. If you can’t make it, why not consider organising a walk with your friends or colleagues in aid of the appeal. We need people, businesses, schools and organisations to keep our appeal in mind for any events they may be organising coming up to Christmas.” said Joe Browne, Fundraising Manager of the CUH Charity. The Children’s Unit at the CUH caters for kids from 2 days old to 16 years of age and impacts families across Cork and the surrounding counties. The Children’s Unit currently has an annual intake of 9,000 patients and has not been updated since the 1970s. A good idea that can be made better the price of all property sold in Ireland since the 1st January 2012 is now available to the general public at the click of a button at; www. propertypriceregister.ie. The creation of this Property Price Register has lead to greater transparency in the property market, adding to the normalisation of house prices. The establishment of the Register is not just another promise fulfilled from the Programme for Government, but is also something that I, and the Labour Party have been calling for for years. Its creation has no doubt dispelled much of the uncertainty around buying property, particularly for first -time buyers, as they are able to buy a home armed with knowledge of the true value of the property. While the availability of more accurate information is to be welcomed, I believe that this register can be improved further. Currently it is not possible to decipher from the register the property size, number of bedrooms or type of property, e.g. apartment, terraced or detached property. It is very difficult to judge the relative true value of a property without this information, and the addition of these details would add greatly to the register. It could also be easily done, as all this information is made available at the time of sale for conveyance purposes. Realistic property prices are essential if we are to restore confidence in the property market so that people wanting to buy a home can do so, and I will continue my calls for the improvement of the Property Price Register- a good idea that can be made better.”

What an eventful week it has been, the launch of the Young at Heart book was the highlight of our week. It is a book you can look at and read over and over again. The dinner was superb, the highlight of the night was the Kiely-Walsh Irish Dancers, what a performance from the Boys and girls! If you put Strictly Come Dancing and Riverdance together they would not come close to the performance we witnessed on the night. Huge credit must go to our own local man Miah Walsh and his wife Maria who have the best dance academy we have ever witnessed. The school is based in Douglas and Carrigaline. Pavement Paradise Not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted. Albert Einstein

Flit, flit, flit. My thoughts run randomly across my consciousness until they cascade into a freefall. My body relaxes as the cool breeze from the car air-conditioning brushes against my face. Both kids are taking a nap in the back seat.

Carrigaline & District Lions Club Present Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind with the Proceeds of their Carrigaline to Croshaven Walk Over 300 people participated in this year’s Carrigaline & District Lions Club charity walk from Carrigaline to Croshaven which was a fun filled family day out. Before the start of the walk staff from Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind face a dog handling presentation. The event was kindly sponsored by PepsiCo. There was a great atmosphere as groups of friends and families walked the beautiful walkway, some

taking their dogs with them for this Sunday afternoon event. A host of free entertainment kept adults and children amused including face painters, clowns and a fire engine and there was a certificate for all participants. IGDB would like to extend a massive thank you to everyone who took part in the walk, to PepsiCo for sponsoring the event and for the ongoing kind support of the Carrigaline & District Lions Club.

My mother runs inside the grocery store, and I lay my head back for the most rejuvenating part of my vacation. This trip is about refocusing, relaxing, refueling. In a car two thousand miles from home, there are no dishes, no conversations and no commitments. I am taking sanctuary where I find it. Oddly enough, where I’m finding it is in a parking lot, surrounded by pavement and the perpetual movement of strangers coming and going. You see, I have a problem, and I believe it is not exclusive to me. My life is insane, and there are days I like it that way. In fact, I actually search out projects to fill my life. I can’t say no, and I rarely pass up opportunitiesthe curse of so many modern women. But with a three-year-old and a new baby, I am feeling lost, overwhelmed, drained. Because it is tax time-my

accountant husband’s busiest time of year-I packed my bags and made my annual trek. Home. To my parents. I vowed to find myself again. And finally encased in a car with no worldly pressures, I find the asylum I so desperately need. Left with nothing more than my own quiet thoughts, I realize my depression is a mild case of baby blues and will pass, and that sometimes a pavement oasis is as good as a hammock on a tropical island. An hour later, my mother emerges from the store. When I tell her about my parking-lot paradise, she smiles slyly and replies, “Isn’t it wonderful?” It’s then I realize she let me sit there so long on purpose. After all, she recognizes my need to escape. She knows what it means to serve as mother, wife, bookkeeper, friend, manager, dreamer, sister ... all the roles of fulfilled womanhood. Even more, she understands the need to replenish to meet those demands. Rachelle Hughes

This Week’s Teazer

In a run-down saloon in a small town in the Wild West, One-eyed Pete and his gang sat playing poker. There were 5 men round the table. After several games one of the men eyed the dealer narrowly and drawled “I says you’re cheating”. It was an unwise comment. The dealer whipped out a gun and shot the offender dead. Naturally someone sent for the sheriff. However, even though the incident had been witnessed by everyone in the bar, he was unable to attest any of the men who had taken part in the Game. Why ?

Sue Sugar had a toothache. She went to the only dentist in town where she was greeted by Dr.Molar and Dr. Bicuspid, the partners. She noticed that where as Dr. Molar had a wonderful mouthful of teeth, his partner’s teeth seemed in urgent need of attention With which partner should she book an appointment ?

A marquee has been specially hired in for the event. The Mens Shed was a hive of activity during the past week with men working in the computer room, the woodworking shop, the mechanical section and in the polytunnel. On Wednesday 13 men were given one of

two demonstrations on ‘Cookery for Men’ by Catherine Foley of the VEC. She taught them how to make parsnip and apple soup, chicken and bacon main course and Tiramisu for desert. It provided a satisfying meal for all after the class.

Art O’ Neill Challenge Carrigaline man Andrew O’Farrell with three others Deirdre, Mary and Kevin are doing the Art O’Neill challenge on the 11th January. It entails running the first 20km and then trek 35km across the Wicklow Mountains as far as Glenmalure. The Art O’Neill challenge commemorates the escape from Dublin Castle in early January 1592 of Art O’Neill and Red Hugh O’Donnell and how they made their way over the snow covered Wicklow Mountains to Fiach MacHugh O’Byrnes stronghold in Glenmalure in South County Wicklow. Basically they will be left out of jail at 1:15am and told to make our way to Glenmalure but to avoid the main roads where possible to avoid capture. All proceeds will go to CASA an association that helps people with special needs and sick people. Andrew is a great champion for CASA he has been helping and fundraising for CASA all his life. Just two weeks ago he organized a collection of used clothes and bric a brac at all Carrigaline masses for the CASA shop on North Main Street in Cork.

Introducing… ONLY

Things to do This Week The huge trumpet flowers of hippeastrum, often called amaryllis, are sure to brighten up the dark days of winter. You might get one as a Christmas gift, but it’s also worth treating yourself to one (or more!) of the massive bulbs which are available in a wide range of colours. And they couldn’t be easier to grow. Not everything in this article may apply to your garden - but there might be something, if not this week maybe next week.

Flower Garden

Lawns & Hedges

It’s time to clear away annual climbers, like sweet peas and morning glory, growing on obelisks. Pick seedheads and evergreen foliage and mix with fruit such as clementines or limes to make a fresh Christmas wreath. Move tubs of shrubs or winter bedding to a sheltered spot if conditions turn very cold. Take root cuttings of oriental poppies and other perennials. Look for early-flowering snowdrops to pot up and bring into the house. Prepare soil well before planting new roses. Cover branches of holly berries with netting to keep birds away. Prune overgrown laurel, yew and camellias back hard to rejuvenate them. Wrap straw or bracken around the base of tender shrubs and climbers to protect them the from cold Check stakes and ties are secure on trees and climbers

In a very mild winter, mow the lawn if necessary, only when dry and with the blades set high.

Kitchen Garden Make a composting trench to enrich soil where beans will grow next spring. Make compost from spent crops. Dig over vacant areas. Lift and divide congested clumps of rhubarb. Cut down asparagus fronds and the tops of Jerusalem artichokes. Buy in rotted farmyard manure or other composted green waste. Use cloches to protect winter peas, beans and salads. Lift and pot up chicory roots to force chicons. Plant new fruit trees, bushes and cane fruits. Bring potted bay trees under cover if conditions turn very cold

Water sparingly and aim to keep the atmosphere as dry as possible over winter to reduce the spread of disease. Check dahlia tubers and bulbs in store for signs of rot. Pick off fading or diseased leaves from pelargoniums and other plants. Continue ventilating the greenhouse on warm days. Cut down chrysanthemums after flowering. Prune dormant vines

In General Sow tree seeds and berries such as cotoneaster and sorbus in pots in a frame outdoors; protect against mice. Hang bird feeders in fruit trees and roses to encourage birds that eat insect pests Install or check plastic tree guards where rabbits are a problem. Check new trees and shrubs after heavy frost, and firm if they have been loosened in the ground

South Link COMMUNITY NEWS

Is there a community event or fundraiser in your area? Please let us know and we will be delighted to publish it for you. Email to – frontdesk@douglaspost. ie. To ensure publication your entry should reach us before 5 PM on Mondays Cork People Before Profit Alliance have organised a public meeting to organise opposition to the latest wave of savage cutbacks in the December Budget. The meeting will take place in the Mahon Community Centre, on Wed Dec 12th at 7.30pm. The aim of the meeting is to give various groups in Cork a forum to discuss the latest Government measures to solve the economic crisis. College students, Carers, Home Helps, Unemployed, Householders against the household tax and those against cuts to child benefit are being encouraged to attend the meeting. Speakers at the meeting will be Dr Tom O’Connor, Lecturer in Economics & Social Policy/Social Care at Cork Institute of Technology and Liz Madden, People Before Profit Alliance and activist from the Campaign against Child Benefit Cuts. The meeting will highlight the abject failure successive budgets, which have followed the austerity policies of the EU/ IMF/ECB troika. Instead of dealing with the mess left by the reckless gambling of the banks and property speculators, they are destroying the lives of the ordinary people around the country. Unemployment has rocketed to 435,000, while last year’s emigration figures show that 87,100 left the Ireland last year. 700,000 people living in poverty, including 200,000 children. 10% food poverty, while 1.8 million household have 100 euros or less. Suicides and homelessness are dramatically on the increase. It is clear that while the government policy of austerity is hurting, it is certainly not working. The strategy of protecting the bondholders, and bailing out banks is a disaster. Growth has slowed to a trickle. Investment has all but dried up, and debt has exploded to 197.5 billion. The meeting will highlight the need for a radically different approach. This will include: • The introduction of wealth tax and financial transaction tax, • Taking control of of the banks, writing down mortgage debt. • Putting in place a policy of Strategic investment, with a well funded public works program. • Halting the privatisation of state companies and giveaway of natural resources. • Fundamentally, we need an Economy that puts human need before profit. The public meeting is part of a growing movement of opposition to the policy of austerity, following the very successful National demonstration on November 24th in Dublin, and the upcoming demonstration in Cork City on Saturday December 8th. All groups affected by the recent cuts are welcome. For more details on the public meeting, please contact Brenda McCarthy on 0868487226

The Sick Poor Society Cork New Members Welcome! This society is probably the oldest charitable society in Cork city. It was founded in 1853 and has it’s roots in the

terrible squalor of recurring epidemic diseases, severe food shortages and widespread misery and deprivation that were rampant during the famine years of late 1840s and early 1850s. Since then, of course, social conditions have improved to the extent that the founding members of the society could scarcely have envisaged. Although the growth of the welfare state has brought about great improvements in modern conditions, people in our community can very often become marginalized due to unexpected circumstances. Families often find themselves under severe financial pressure due to unemployment, illness, bereavement, harmful addiction, separation, unequal access to opportunities and other forms of discrimination. The task of The Sick Poor Society is to reach out to families who are in these difficult circumstances and to provide them with material and other assistance. This work is undertaken on a voluntary basis and consequently, all monies are used solely for the benefit of needy families. Administration charges of the society are less than 1% per annum. New members are urgently required, both male and female, who will be richly rewarded by the satisfaction derived from helping those in dire need “AT The end of life we will not be judged by how many diplomas we have received, how much money we have made, how many great things we have done. We will be judged by “I was hungry, and you gave me something to eat, I was naked and you clothed me. I was homeless, and you took me in.” If you or your family are suffering at this Time, we invite you to contact the society in compete Confidentiality and we will arrange for one of our members To call and visit you in your home and advise you of any assistance we may be able To provide. The society is a REGISTERED CHARITY, Ma, 1389. To contact The society, please write to: The Sick Poor Society, Dunbar Street, Cork ~ Telephone (O87)7549933 or www.sickpoor.com, sickpaorsocieyy@ gmail.com

Schoolboys Section: National Cup: Corinthian Boys 4 Corinthian Boys A 0 In a very sporting contest which was a credit to both sides and their coaches, Corinthians Premier squad proved too strong for their Club rivals in this fourth round National Cup clash. It was a pity that the two sides had to meet at this stage but both sides can take plenty of positives from the match. Corinthian Boys A in particular never let their heads drop and played right to the final whistle. Well done to all concerned. Under 14: Springfield Ramblers 0 Corinthian Boys 2 Corinthian Boys made their way into the draw for the last 32 of the National Cup after a hard fought win over Springfield Ramblers. Their breakthrough came on the 50min when Eoin Murphy fired home from the penalty spot after a period of sustained pressure. Eoin Davis added Corinthians second on the 56min after he headed home from in swinging free kick from James O’Donovan. And Stephen Fox can consider himself unlucky not to be on the score sheet with two great chances. On both occasions the ball took an awkward bonce just as he pulled the trigger that caused him to miss the target. Eoin Murphy could have added Corinthians third from the penalty spot just on full-time only to be

Umbro U-12 Division One: Douglas Hall 3; Springfield Ramblers A 1 The Hall had to come from behind to defeat the visitors at a wet Moneygourney. Despite dominating the firs-half, the found the away keeper in brilliant form as he dealt with everything thrown at him and even found themselves a goal down before the break as a result of poor defending from a corner kick. Eamonn Kiely rounded the keeper to level early in the second-half before going on score his second from a superb free-kick midway through the half. Diarmaid McCarthy was on hand to finish a third to the net after Kiely’s shot was parried by the keeper. Eoin Coughlan and Andrew Cotter impressed. Umbro U-14 National Cup Douglas Hall 3 ; Ballincollig 2 The Hall progressed out of Cork with a best of five goal win over arch rivals Ballincollig in a cracking tie. Twice behind, goals by Jonathan O’Regan & Mathew McAuliffe drew the teams level before Cathal Kenny struck the decisive winner. Aaron Buckley had an outstanding match for the winners. Umbro U-16 Division One Douglas Hall 1 ; Greenwood 1 There was very little between these teams throughout a game in which both defences were on top from the start. With 20 minutes left David Barry bend the ball around the wall to give the home team the lead. The visitors pushed hard for the equaliser and got it with two minutes left to give the teams a point each. Donnacha Murphy and Fionn O’Connor played a very influential role at the back for the Hall. Umbro FAI U-17 Cup – Third Round Douglas Hall 0; Midleton 1 Despite dominating for long periods, the Hall were undone by a well taken freekick goal midways through the secondhalf. In a pacey contest, central David O’Connor, captain Paul Lehane, winger Niall Fitzgerald & sub Dylan Stanton impressed for the hosts. Daly Industrial Supplies U-17 League 1A: Douglas Hall A 1; Carrigaline Utd. 2 Fintan Cadogan scored a neatly worked 20th minute goal for the hosts whose best on the day included Michael Hughes, Shane O’Connell & James O’Donovan. In a super team display, the Hall’s league position doesn’t do justice

to their growing ability. Umbro FAI Youth Cup – Second Round: Douglas Hall 2; Macroom 1 The Hall began a huge weekend of cup football with a hard fought win over title frontrunners Macroom to stretch their unbeaten home run to eleven at Moneygourney. The visitors opened the scoring before sub Mark O’Connor levelled three minutes into the secondhalf. In a tense second-half, Daniel Savage combined with Paul Lehane to edge the hosts in front with fifteen minutes remaining. Macroom’s efforts to draw level were thwarted by heroic defence from Colin Downey, Darragh O’Leary, Eoghan Fahy, Alan Buckley & keeper Ryan Kennedy. Beamish Stout Junior Premier Division: Douglas Hall 1; Glasheen 0 John McCarthy scored the winning goal for Tommy Corcoran’s title chasing charges. Lucozade Sport Munster Junior Cup – Third Round: Greenwood A 1; Douglas Hall 1 aet. ( Greenwood A won 5-4 on pens. ) Ritchie Butler netted for the Hall who lost out in the shoot-out to Premier Division opponents on a heavy surface at Alsaa Pk. Umbro FAI Intermediate Cup – Third Round: Douglas Hall 1; Bluebell Utd. 2 Following a scoreless first-half, the visitors went two in front before Derek Varian pulled one back to set up a frantic closing ten minutes. Despite going close on a number of occasions and hitting the crossbar, the Hall’s brave effort came up short in a good tempered contest. FOOT-NOTE : The Management Committee offers its condolences to U-13 Division One youngster Aaron Buckley on the recent passing of his grandfather.

Under 15: Lakewod Ath. 0 Corinthian Boys 5 A very impressive win away to Lakewood in the National Cup, this superb performance means that Cormac Cotter’s side advance to the last 32 of the Cup for the 4th consecutive season. Corinthians dominated the game from the off, and were awarded for their dominance after 10 minutes when Colin O Brien passed to Dean Swords who made no mistake with a low drive. 10 minutes later and after continued pressure, Dean Swords passed to James Holland just inside the Lakewood penalty area who’s shot sailed passed the keeper. 2 minutes into the second half Dean Swords claimed his second when he rose high to head the ball into the net from a Colin O Brien cross. O Brien was involved in our fourth when his pass found Dean Swords inside the box who shot passed the keeper for his hat trick. Mark Buckley completed the scoring when he headed the ball into the net from a Bryan Cotter cross. Jack Murray was awesome at right back as was Stephen Jermyn in goal. Know Your Rights: Getting ill while on Jobseeker’s Allowance Question: I lost my job some time ago and am now getting Jobseeker’s Allowance. I was recently diagnosed with a serious illness. What other social welfare payments can I get?

Answer: You may qualify for Illness Benefit. To get Illness Benefit you must be under 66 and unable to work because of illness and you must satisfy the PRSI contribution conditions. You must have at least 104 contributions paid since you started work. You must also have 39 contributions paid or credited in the relevant tax year of which at least 13 weeks must be paid contributions. You can also qualify if you have 26 paid contributions in the relevant tax year and 26 paid in the year before. The relevant tax year is 2011 for claims in 2013.

• At the launch of the College Corinthians AFC Super Draw were left, Donal O’ Donovan, Neil Daly and Paul O’ Callaghan (Super Draw committee)

26 - Thur 6 December ’12

People who have been getting longterm Jobseeker’s Allowance (for at least 15 months) and have enough PRSI contributions do not need to have 13 contributions recently paid. If you were getting Jobseeker’s Benefit for a period before going onto Jobseeker’s Allowance, you can include this time in the 15-month requirement.

If you have 260 PRSI contributions or more paid since you first started work you can get the maximum rate of Illness Benefit for up to 2 years (104 weeks). If you are getting a reduced rate of Jobseeker’s Allowance your Illness Benefit payment may be reduced. If you have between 104 and 259 PRSI contributions paid you can only claim Illness Benefit for 1 year (52 weeks) and you may not qualify for the maximum rate of benefit. If you do not qualify for Illness Benefit you can apply for Disability Allowance, which is a means-tested payment. You can only get this if your illness is expected to last for at least one year. Extra benefits are paid with Disability Allowance (such as Fuel Allowance and a Free Travel Pass) so this payment may be a better option if you qualify.
