Joint Christmas Message from the Bishops of Cork: The Most Reverend John Buckley and the Right Reverend Paul Colton Christmas 2012 This remains a time of extraordinary need in our country and in our local communities. Economic uncertainty, commercial vulnerability and people strained to their financial limit continue to be a major concern to us all. Christmas, with the message that ‘God is with us’ brings hope where there may be hopelessness, and light in darkness. The meaning of Christmas, which is both comforting and challenging, can all too easily be lost in a seasonal world of pantomime, party, decorations and festivity. All of those do, of course, have their traditional place at this time of year. Within the Churches, Christians too, over the centuries, have dressed Christmas up in all sorts of ways, such as manger scenes far removed from reality, Victorian carols, and much else that risk concealing the life-changing and radical good news – the Gospel - that, in Jesus, God came among us and shared our human experience. The birth of the baby at Christmas - the Incarnation of the Word of God - altered the course of human history and has been a force for change in society, as well as in the lives of people, in every age and place. In our message this year, as again we personally witness as local bishops to our shared journey of Christian faith, we invite all people of faith to mark out this Christmas as a time of personal faithfulness and witness to the heart of the Christmas message. We can do this by reaching out with friendship and practical support to our neighbours of all religious outlooks; by taking time to reflect again on the Gospel account of the birth of Jesus Christ; by putting worship at the centre of our Christmas celebrations; through acts of generosity and kindness; in the hospitality and service we offer to those in need, whether ourselves or through organisations and charities that we support. In the words of one traditional seasonal blessing, therefore, we wish you and yours the joy of the angels, the eagerness of the shepherds, the perseverance of the wise men, the obedience of Mary and Joseph, and most especially, the peace of the Christ-child for this Christmas 2012 and for the New Year, 2013. Smokelss Coal In August 2012 new regulations came into force extending the “smokeless coal” area in Cork. The area now extends well beyond Cork City and includes Ballincollig, Ovens, Tower, Blarney, Glanmire, Little Island, Glounthaune, Passage West, Monkstown, Ringaskiddy and Carrigaline.
cities in subsequent years. It has led to huge improvements in air quality in the urban areas where it has been introduced. Medical experts estimate that this improvement in air quality has saved over 300 lives per annum in the Dublin area alone. It is quite literally a matter of life and death.
It is now an Offence to sell or distribute any coal, that is not in a sealed bag and marked “Smokeless Fuel”, anywhere in this extended ban area.
Not only is smokeless coal better for the environment, it is also more cost effective. Smoky coal burns more quickly with increased heat loss through the chimney. Smokeless coal burns for longer and it works out to be about 20% more efficient and therefore 20% cheaper in the long run.
It is also an Offence to burn such coal anywhere in this extended ban area. Banned coal is generally sold as “Premium” or “Polish” coal and it is illegal to burn it in the ban area. The ban on smoky coal first came into effect in Dublin in the 1980s and was extended to other towns and

Art Grants 2013, Cork City Council Cllr Kieran McCarthy, a member of Cork City Council’s arts committee, is inviting all community and voluntary groups throughout the south east ward to avail of Cork City Council’s Arts Grant Scheme 2013. Arts grants provide direct revenue funding for groups in support of their core work. Cork City Council will also early next year offer artist bursary awards to individual artists. Commenting Cllr McCarthy noted that: “There are many groups who contribute to the creative arts and culture of Cork city; in the south east ward alone there are several groups involved in providing drama education, dance instruction, music instruction and even perform for our local communities sending out the right positive message in these times. The arts grants provide much needed finance to keep such organisations going. The money is there; please apply for it. Our communities would be less spirited because of your presence”. Applications should be made on the official application form, which is available from the Arts Office, T.E.A.M. Unit, Corporate Affairs, City Hall. Application forms are also available from www.corkcity.ie and by email from arts@corkcity. ie. The Grant is provided to a number of professional arts organisations and community and voluntary groups throughout the city area. Completed application forms, accompanied by the documentation specified on the application form, should be returned to the Arts Office T.E.A.M. Unit, City Hall, Cork, not later than Friday 18 December 2013.

Poetry Corner with Ronnie McGinn
One night in Christmas Week a few years ago I was walking down the South Mall. The spirit of Christmas was everywhere, at the entrance to the Imperial Hotel affluent guests were arriving, a choir was singing and as I passed on I could hear the bells of the City Hall ring. Then I noticed a grey haired old man in a doorway. He was wrapped in a blanket and lying on a sheet of cardboard.
Mother’s Hands at Christmas Time Ah! The Christmas lights, - look cheery, But this pavements cold and dreary, And my heart is worn and weary, Can’t believe its Christmas time... Here, between the sobs and sighing, On this cardboard where I’m lying, I can see beyond the crying, Mothers hands at Christmas time. And the big log fire - a-blazing, The baking - and the braising, Oh my God they were amazing, Mothers hands at Christmas time All the fussing and the preening, Decorating and the cleaning, Ah! they gave our lives a meaning, Mothers hands at Christmas time. Happy Christmas and a Peaceful New Year to all our Supporters We would like to thank the good people of the greater Douglas area, and its wonderful business people who supported us in any way throughout 2012 and to the staff of our community newsletter Douglas Post who do a vital job of bringing our news to you. We hope to get our building project at the centre on it’s way by early Spring and that at least the first phase, which is to build a twostory extension, and have an operating new Meals & Wheels kitchen, will be completed. We have a raft of fundraisers planned for 2013 and we look forward to your continued support. All volunteers are welcomed with open arms. Pre-School Playgroup- One mom’s Report (Shirley O’Shea)
We have heard it said that Christmas is a time for children so, as I’m sure you can imagine, we are very busy here at Douglas Community Pre School at the moment. The kids are preparing for their school concert on the 14th of December and are learning carols to be heard on the morning by very enthusiastic parents and teachers alike. The school closes for the Christmas holidays on the 21st and reopens on Monday, 7th of January 2013. What will 2013 bring ?? Well more activities for the children to get
involved in the community, like a bike/doll and pram walk around the park, which is one of the wonderful amenities in our community and we might squeeze some fundraising in too. Finally, all of us at the school teachers, children and parents, would like to wish your readers a Happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year and thank you for your support in 2012, which we hope will continue into 2013. Bag-Packing at Marks and Spencer We had a very busy week-end 0n 5/6th Dec. bag-packing at Marks and Spencer. This event was organised by Mary O’Leary, helped by Paudie Martin, two of our very busy committee members. Mary invegled and arm-twisted a team of people – young and old - to do hourly duties packing bags over the week-end. At first count, it appears almost €3,000 was made, which goes to our Building Fund. Many thanks to Marks and Spenser for facilitating this fundraiser, and to the people of Douglas, whose generosity, even on the direst week of tax hikes and cut-backs, shone through. The spirit of giving is alive and well in our community. Community Welfare Officer
For people in and around the Douglas area, the Dept. Of Social Protection provides a Community Welfare Officer, who attends at three different venues: Douglas Community Centre, Passage and Ballintemple Health Centres. This service is provided to help people experiencing financial difficulties. 5th class girls from Scoil Bhride, Eglantine are taking part in the Discover Cork Schools’ Heritage Project 2013. The girls have had great fun and enjoyment doing these projects. They have also created superb models as part of these projects. Models include Cork City Gaol, UCC, Jameson Heritage Centre, Pairc Ui Chaoimh, COPE foundation, Fastnet Lighthouse, The Famine, Collins Barracks, Cork 100 years ago, the Forge, Fota, Hickey’s Shop, The Titanic, The English Market and the Lough. Some girls also made films on their chosen topic. These projects have created great interest and enthusiasm among the student and we would particularly like to thank Cllr. Kieran McCarthy for his expertise and support in the development of this project.

The Meals and Wheels team would like to thank all the volunteers, cooks and drivers, who worked so hard throughout 2012. The value of this service really can’t be overstressed, keeping elderly people in their homes by providing them with a nourishing meal and maintaining daily social contact. Meals are delivered every day, bar Sunday. Two meals are delivered on Friday to cover Saturday also. If you would like to avail of the service or if you could volunteer some time as a cook or driver, please contact Mary at the centre at 4894955, or drop in a note. Mad Pride – Mental Health Action Group We have just received a comprehensive list of contacts for people in need of support for mental health issues from David McCarthy of Mad Pride. These include HSE, Addiction groups, community support groups, etc. and are available on our own website or on the Mad Pride Website, www.madpride.ie. Christmas can be a very difficult time for a lot of people particularly with the economic pressures on families and the cutbacks of services and just to know there is help out there for people finding it difficult to cope which can be any one us at any time.

Douglas ICA Douglas ICA is a very active guild and has about 50 members. The Guild meets once a month where members catch up with the news, listen to guest speakers on a range of topics and of course enjoy some refreshments. Members participate in a range of Guild activities which include Choir, Drama, Book Club, Exercise and Craft classes. We also organise regular outings, concerts, plays, gardening workshops, coffee mornings and trips to An Grianan (home of the ICA
Bootcamp TV series) for a week of education and relaxation. The Guild meet on the second Thursday of each month. New members are always warmly welcomed. The Douglas ICA Hall is located on Church Road beside Lion House and opposite the Douglas Community Park.

Ireland must exert political pressure on Uganda to prevent anti-gay law Fine Gael Cork South Central Deputy and Chair of the Party’s LGBT Group, Jerry Buttimer, has said the Irish Government must continue to make its views known to the Ugandan Government on controversial and draconian anti-homosexual legislation, which has become commonly known as the ‘kill the gays bill’. “Last month, the provision for the death penalty for ‘repeat offender’ gays, gay people who are in authority or who are HIV positive was dropped from the Ugandan Anti-Homosexuality Bill. “The Speaker of the Ugandan Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga, recently said that the antigay bill will become law by the end of this month as a Christmas present to the Ugandan people who are demanding the legislation which will prevent the proliferation of homosexual activity. “The bill which broadens the criminisilation of same sex relationships, not only aims to target and victimise the gay community in Uganda, it also contains provision for the extradition and punishment of Ugandans who engage in same-sex relations outside of the country. “The Tánaiste travelled to Uganda during the summer and held meetings with the Ugandan President on this and other matters. I am calling on the Irish Government to reopen the dialogue that was initiated last summer in an effort to prevent this oppressive legislation from being introduced and to help further the cause and human rights of the Ugandan gay community.”

I have spent over 7 years volunteering with a search and rescue canine unit (SARDA IRELAND) training my own two dogs and other members dogs. Ballinlough Community News With Mary Cremin Ballinlough Youth Clubs The Ballinlough Youth Clubs hosted their annual Christmas Concert on Sun Dec 9 in the Community Centre. The event was sold out but lucky ticket holders were treated to a spectacular evening of entertainment. The Ballinlough Junior Youth Club opened the event with a few poems of festive folly, followed by a beautiful version of Silent Night and other Christmas carols. Local actress Marie O’ Donovan had the audience in fits of laughter with her short comedy snippets and cheeky charisma. The first half literally finished on a high note as the audience were treated to the audible delights of Ken O’ Flynn and Amanda Neri. Just before half time the Events Committee presented a cheque to Penny Dinners for €500 which were the proceeds of their raffle from the End of Summer Festival. The second half was superb as Mary Hegarty accompanied by Eleanor Malone performed to an audience completely captivated by her sweet songs and an amazing rendition of “Oh Holy Night”. Jerry “The Liar” Millar had people falling off their seats with laughter at his whimsical life lessons and tall stories. The night finished with the fabulous Memory Lane singing olden goldies and Christmas songs to put us all in the festive mood. It was a great nights entertainment well done to the Ballinlough Youth Club Events Committee.

Finance Committee to question bank Public Interest Directors The Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform has agreed to call on the public interest directors in the covered banks to attend a meeting to discuss their roles and responsibilities. Ciarán Lynch, TD, Chairman of the Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, said: “As part of the Committee’s banking module, members have requested that the Public Interest Directors on the boards of banks which have been bailed out by the State to come before the Committee to discuss their role, responsibilities, duties and functions in these institutions. Among the issues we will want to address with the public interest directors are: what distinguishes them from the other directors on the banks’ boards; how do they invoke and carry out their roles; what are their responsibilities; who do they report to; and what scrutiny do they apply to the banks’ lending policies, such as lending to SMEs in particular to ensure that they comply with the guidelines and options arising from the Keane Report to assist struggling mortgage holders such as split mortgages and mortgage to rent options. The Committee has already met with senior executives in IBRC, AIB and Bank of Ireland where they were questioned on the operations and functions of their respective banks, including the recapitalisation process, restructuring and rationalisation of the banks and examine how this may impact on branch numbers, staffing, customer service and lending.”

Blackrock/ Mahon Community News Remembrance Night in Mahon Wot! Project in Mahon recently held a night of remembrance in Mahon Community Centre. This was an event that united our community in a ceremony of Light and Remembrance for all those whom we have lost. Donations received on the night were divided between Console, Share a Dream and the Irish Cancer Society.As a community we walked from the community centre to the Blackrock walk and released balloons with messages to our loved ones attached in unison. Feedback from the community of the night was that it felt special and symbolic.
Pyjama Day for Crumlin The students and staff of Youthreach Mahon held a pyjama day recently to raise much needed funds for Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children in Crumlin, Dublin. The day took on a Christmas theme as many of the students dressed in seasonal ‘onesies’.
There was Santa pyjamas and elf pyjamas alongside the traditional pyjamas. The staff sported wigs and lost all authority for the day. Classes were held but there wasn’t much work going on. How can you take a teacher seriously when he is wearing his ‘hospital’ pyjamas? The centre coordinator Ms Maura White said that it ‘brought a really good atmosphere to the house’ and is very pleased with the student council that brought the idea to life. ‘We should be very proud of the young people as they have shown concern for others and generosity at this special time of year.’ The students all contributed either cash or a soft toy. All cash goes to Crumlin and the toys were given to the local Vincent de Paul toy collection. Youthreach offers second chance education for young people in the 16 – 20 age group. The Alternative Christmas Dinner Monk Fish Roast Stuffed with Sage and Onion Try something new this year, our sage and onion stuffed Monk Fish Roast is so simple, just add your favourite herbs and roast. Ingredients 1 Monk Fish Tail Sage and Onion stuffing Rosemary sprigs (or your favourite herb) Rapeseed oil Sea salt & pepper
Method: Slice through the middle and gently fill with the stuffing and then roll together and tie lightly with string. Place on an oiled baking tray and insert the rosemary sprigs under the string ties and season with salt and pepper. Roast in a hot oven (180C) for 10 to 15 minutes; remove when cooked. Place the fish on a warm tray. De-glaze the cooking tray with a little white wine and boil away most of the liquid. Add chopped rosemary and fresh cream; blend in to a sauce. Remove any string from the fish and cut in to slices and dress with some sauce. Serve with your favourite seasonal vegetables, and enjoy!

Carrigaline Community News Carrigaline Macra Na Feirme Club News. Monday 31st Dec: Carrigaline Macra New years eve ball will be held at the Cork Airport International Hotel. The Cost is 35euro pp and includes Drinks reception,4 course meal, Late bar and a complimentary sweets buffet sponsored by Auntie Nellies sweetshop and the music is by the ‘Little Creatures’ band and it promises to be a great night. Tickets are available from Niall Nicholson (0877529027) or Catriona Sweeney (0872988296) Following last year’s success the club will be organising a trip to Brussels from the 18th to 20th of February 2013. This event is an educational trip and is subsidised by the European Union. 30 places on a first come basis will be offered and people travelling will have an opportunity of meeting some of Irelands MEPs and will get an insight of what is happening in the European Parliament as well as sampling some of what Brussels Night life has to offer. Art O’ Neill Challenge Carrigaline man Andrew O’Farrell with three others Deirdre, Mary and Kevin are doing the Art O’Neill challenge on the 11th January. It entails running the first 20km and then trek 35km across the Wicklow Mountains as far as Glenmalure. The Art O’Neill challenge commemorates the escape from Dublin Castle in early January 1592 of Art O’Neill and Red Hugh O’Donnell and how they made their way over the snow covered Wicklow Mountains to Fiach MacHugh O’Byrnes stronghold in Glenmalure in South County Wicklow. Basically they will be left out of jail at 1:15am and told to make our way to Glenmalure but to avoid the main roads where possible to avoid capture.
All proceeds will go to CASA an association that helps people with special needs and sick people. Andrew is a great champion for CASA he has been helping and fundraising for CASA all his life. Just two weeks ago he organized a collection of used clothes and bric a brac at all Carrigaline masses for the CASA shop on North Main Street in Cork.
Wren Boys It is all systems go for this years Wrenboy Festival in Carrigaline. Wren Boys have been getting their costumes ready for their annual outing on Main Street, Carrigaline on St Stephen’s morning. The Straw Boys have a set of new suits ready to add to the colourful outfits that the Wrenboys have collected over the years. The Wrenboys Festival is due to start at 11.00 am when Main Street will be closed to traffic. The gig rig with the Musicians will be located by Spar and everybody is welcome to join in the damhsa, ceol agus Craic. This year the organizers are inviting as many as possible to dress up in colourful costumes to add to the festive spirit and give everyone a lift. The collection on the day will be taken up in aid of Marymount and the Irish Motor Neuron Disease Association. The Wrenboys will visit and perform at all the pubs and the hotel afterwards.
The Hunt The South Union Hunt traditional Meet in Carrigaline goes back over 200 years. They meet on St Stephen’s Day outside Rosies Bar at 12 noon. Some 100 horses and riders are expected and they make a wonderful sight as they head south through the Main Street and on for Kilmoney and open country. The Main Street will be closed from 11.00 am to 2.00pm and Gardaí and stewards will be on duty diverting traffic around the town. All car parks will open and accessible. However locals who can walk to the town centre are asked to leave their cars at home.
Christmas Blood Donation The Irish Blood Transfusion Service is holding a special Blood Donor Clinic in the Carrigaline GAA on this Sunday 23rd December from 12 noon to 3.30pm. It gives those who were unable to come to the clinic last week an opportunity to give a Christmas gift of a pint of blood. At last weeks Carrigaline Clinic 259 blood donations were made. Congratulations to all donors.
100 Gospel Voices For Marymount A great night was had last Sunday, 16th Dec, at the 100 Gospel Voices for Marymount concert in Carrigaline, which raised €3,670 for this worthy cause. The three gospel choirs involved, Carrigaline, Frankfield and Castlelyons, would like to extend their thanks to everyone that attended and so generously donated. The church was packed with people from all over the county and beyond, who enjoyed the uplifting and inspiring performances from three wonderful choirs united together for a great charity. “There was great camaraderie between the choirs

Mens Shed Following the successful blessing and official opening of the Carrigaline Mens Shed the members are actually doing advance planning for the year ahead. A plan has been drawn up and discussed by those who are interested in the gardening project. We have a new polytunnel and quite a large area of curtailage where all interested in the gardening project can be catered for. Members will be stewarding at the Christmas Fun Run on the Railway Walk on Saturday 29th December. Mean while visitors and new members are always welcome to call and visit the Mens Shed, which is located just south of Fosters Cross on the Minane Bridge Road. This means that anything sold in a sale must be of merchantable quality, fit for its intended purpose and as described to you. If an item is faulty, your rights do not change just because it was on sale. However, you may not have grounds for redress if you were told about the defect before you bought the item (for example, if the goods were marked ‘shopsoiled’). If an item is faulty, you are entitled to a repair, replacement or refund. The legislation does not specify whether it is the retailer/supplier or the customer who decides which form of redress is offered. Many retailers state which option they offer you at the point of sale. If you have a problem with goods you bought at full price which are now on sale at a reduced price, you are entitled to a refund of the full price (if
the shop is willing to offer a refund rather than an exchange or repair). However you are not entitled to an exchange (or a refund or a credit note) simply because you change your mind about something you’ve bought in a shop, whether this is during the sales or at any other time of the year. The Hall had a comprehensive win over Leeds at Moneygourney, starting well & scoring three times in the opening quarter of an hour through Eamonn Kiely (2) & a rare Cian Punch strike. The hosts spurned several more chances to increase their lead before Alex Walsh added a fourth & Eamonn Kiely having a hattrick denied with his fine shot coming back off the crossbar. Further goals from Luke O’ Keeffe and another from Walsh sealed an impressive win. Overall this was a superb team performance with all players giving outstanding contributions. The Hall & hosts Kilreen played out an exciting nine-goal thriller at Ballyphehane Pk. with goals from Sean Hayes ( 2 ) & Fergus Herlihy giving the visitors a 3-1 interval lead. Celtic narrowed the gap to one before Shane Downey restored his side’s two goal at 4-2. • U16 Munster Cup Winner - College Corinthians
College Corinthians Schoolboys Section Division 1: Corinthian Boys A 2:Springfield Ramblers A 2 Corinthians took a share of the points in a game that they should have won comfortably. Corinthians dominated the first half and created chance after chance, playing some lovely passing football. Andrew Greany broke the deadlock with a well struck shot into the corner of the net and he scored his second from close range from Alexander Harley’s corner kick. Just before half time Springfield’s keeper made a great save from Ruairi Moriarty’s diving header. Springfield came more into the game in the second half and scored two good goals. David Cotter nearly got the winner for Corinthians when his shot beat the keeper but skimmed the crossbar. Best for Corinthians were Alexander Harley and Ben Lucey. Under 14: Premier Division Corinthian Boys Ballincollig Corinthian Boys stretched their lead at the top of the Premier league with a brace of goals from both Eoin Davis and David O’Sullivan against an understrenght but gallant Ballincollig side. Corithians were confortable throughout and were rarely put under any pressure at the back which allowed them to maintain good possession football as they switched and moved the ball around with ease. Corinthians can take a well earned break until the New Year when they face an away game to Leeds, Happy Christmas to all...... Division 3: Kanturk 2 Corinthuian Boys A 5 The boys came from 2 goals down to turn this game around and scored 3 in the last 10 minutes to put the game out of reach. They dominated the game from start to finish but some very poor concentration in the first half allowed Kanturk in for two easy goals, the second in particular from a corner that the boys had a number of chances to clear. David Harrington pulled one back before the break to give the boys a lifeline and they finally came to life in
the second half. With Conor Nash and David Nason in complete control at the centre of the park it was all Corinthians now and David Harrington placed a perfectly struck free kick into the top corner giving the Kanturk keeper no chance. Padraig Nash was introduced with 15 minutes remaining and had an immediate impact with his pace running at the Kanturk back four, it was only a matter of time before he was rewarded for his effort and he put the boys ahead with a fierce shot beyond the keeper. Some great work from Karl Hyde on the right led to a tap in for Padraig’s second and Brendan Powter completed the scoring when the ball broke to him from a corner with minutes remaining. Three well deserved points for the boys who need to kick on from here for the rest of the season. Under 15: Midleton 0 Corinthian Boys 2 Another good win by our lads which sees them go 5 points clear in the league going into the Christmas break. We could have been 2 up inside the first 10 minutes, with Colin O Brien going close twice, and Ross Welch going narrowly wide. Eventually we took a deserved lead on 25 minutes, when Dean Swords cross from the left found Colin O Brien, who’s volley sailed passed the keeper. That remained the score until 15 minutes remaining when Corinthians broke from a Midleton corner and Bryan Cotter’s low shot made the final score 2-0 Excellent performance’s by Stephen Jermyn, Jack Murray. Underage Section. The Underage section which caters for the Under 6 to Under 11 age group takes a break now for the Christmas holiday period returning to action on Saturday January 5th. Tramore Athletic AFC Under 16 Premier Division: Rockmount 0-2 Tramore. (Dec 8) Goals came from Cian Mc Carthy with a powerful header and from a Stuart Murphy tap in. Adam Mylod had a great game on goal pulling off a string of brilliant saves. Brian Barry, Cian Mc Carthy and Jacob Morris all stood out for Tramore. Tramore 2 Mayfield 1 (Dec 16) Tramore raced three points clear at the top with a well-deserved 2-1 win over Mayfield on Sunday Morning. The hosts were quick in to their stride and stand out player Eric Murphy fired them ahead on 15mins with a great shot from outside the box. Just before half time Mayfield equalised from a corner, but in the second half Tramore pushed on and Stuart Murphy struck the winner with a lovely left foot shot across the keeper. Liam Madden and Cian McCarthy also impressed for the winners. U 15 Div1. Tramore Athletic 1 Blarney Utd 2 After a poor start Tramore found themselves two down, but after Rory Quirke threw them a lifeline early in the second half it was all the home side as they peppered the Blarney goal in search of an equaliser. Despite winning 9 corners it wasn’t to be and Blarney held on for a slender victory. James Sheehan, Sean O’Sullivan and Gavin Holland were best for Tramore. U 14 Div. 2 Tramore Ath 7 .Riverstown 3 This result was in the balance until the final 10 mins. Having gone ahead in the first minute scored by Alex Connolly, Tramore struggled to convert their superior possession and paid the price and found themselves level 1-1 at half time. Riverstown started the second half better and the home team trailed 3-1 with 20 minutes remaining. Things improved and with 2 more goals from Alex Connolly, Mark Gallagher 2,Daniel Luxford and, Andrew Turner ,the home team finished the stronger and continue their improving season. Even though this was not the team’s best performance this season, the character shown when 3-1 behind by the 14 players had to be recognised. Der and Ken would like to take this opportunity to thank the parents and GRANDPARENT for all their support during the year and hope that Santa is good to all. Under 13 Div.2 Macroom 1 Tramore Athletic 0 In a hard fought game at town park Macroom, the hosts prevailed by a goal to nil. On a very heavy pitch Tramore looked to dominate from the start and in the first 15 minutes created three clear openings with Andrew O’Connell and Eoin O’Donovan going close. On a rare breakaway Macroom took one of the few chances they had to score on 16 minutes. For the rest of the game it was largely one way traffic as Tramore created chance after chance only to find the Macroom keeper in inspired form. It was a frustrating day for a team who had excellent performances from Joseph Cregan and Emmet Sheehan Under 13 Div. 2: Tramore Athletic A 4-2 Kilnardrish Coachford. In this top of the table clash, Tramore emerged as worthy winners. The game began at a frenetic pace and Tramore

took an early lead after Robert Cregan slotted home from Ben Healy’s through ball. The roles were reversed a couple of minutes later when Cregan set up Healy to make 2-nil inside the 8 minutes. Coachford got a goal back midway through the first half and began to get a foothold in the game before Ben Healy slotted home a penalty to leave it 3-1 at half time. Plenty of chances were created by Tramore in the second half but for all their possession, they failed to convert. Coachford pulled another one back to leave the game on a knife edge but Robert Cregan finished it off with the goal that sealed the win with ten minutes remaining. This was a tremendous, battling performance by Tramore with notable performances form Ciaran O Mahony, Ronan Dalton & Liam Hurley in goal. Tramore Athletic V College Corinthians U12’s Div The second half of the season got underway at Tramore Park in the U12 CSL, Division 1, with the visit of College Corinthians. A near full strength Tramore squad were quick out of the blocks at the kick off and put immediate pressure on the Corinthians back four. In the fifth minute after sustained pressure, Tramore went into the lead after a corner by Killian McGowan wasn’t cleared and McGowan placed his shot into the top left hand corner. Athletic continued to press and could not convert their possession into goals. Indeed it was in the 16th minute when Keeper Conor Purcell was first called into action with a fine stop. The last 10 minutes of the first half saw a flurry of goals. Corinthians equalised on the counter and then Kieran Murphy popped up to put Athletic back ahead. The last action of the first half was another goal by Corinthians and the teams went into the break all square.Athletic started the second half in much the same fashion as the first. Kalem Cashman’srelentless running on the right flank was a constant threat and Cormac Towe at the back was efficient at the back cutting out the rare Corinthians counter attacks. Life FM “Man of the Match” Cathal Crowley,(see photo), was now exerting his authority and joining in with the attack. The full back had a header cleared off the Corinthians line and a ferocious shot from 25 yards pass the wrong side of the upright. And that’s how the game ended, 2 apiece. Tramore can feel disappointed at not collecting all 3 points but nonetheless there were many positives in the overall performance. Tramore soccer tots Training for boys and girls born between 2006 and 2008 takes place in Colaiste Criost ri between 6-7 pm on Mondays and new players are always welcome. Training for those born in 2004 and 2005 takes place in Nemo Rangers indoor hall from 11-12pm and again newcomers are welcome. Training resumes after the Christmas break on Sunday Jan 13th. Crosshaven Pitch & Putt Club With Michael Desmond The end of another year and in the past year while successes in outside Competitions were in short supply we all enjoyed the Competitions and the challenge of playing other Courses. We were honoured by the P P U I.when they held the Final of the Munster Mixed Foursomes on our Course. It was great to see Competitors coming from as far as Tipperary and Waterford to practic in the weeks prior to the Competition and they all enjoyed their visit to Crosshaven. The past year also includid a trip to Spain 29 headed off to the Hotel Agustus in the residential area of Cambrils a short walk from Salou,we played four Competitions on two Courses Club El Vendrell and Club Cambrils everyone had a great time in the evenings we held a Table Quiz with Mick Mc Carthy as quiz master,we also held a Pool Competition which was geat fun at the final we had a singalong ably led by Frank Kavanagh.The Presidents Prize was held in Spain and was won by Ida O Halloran it
was the first time holding it outside the Club.At home Pat O Mahony won the Ladies Captains Prize while Jim Mc Carthy won the Gents the Club Matchplay went to Jamie Owen. We ended the year on a sad note with the passing of Michael Ahern,Michael who only a few years ago was crowned Munser Mixed Foursome Champion with his Sister Martha,he was also a fine Artise and loved to paint pictures of Crosshaven the latest one of our Course which his Family put on a Christmas Card to raise funds for the Club.May he rest in peace.Our thanks to everyone who helped out during the year be it on the Course,Competitions,Club House to Frank for his work on the greens Aiden who looks after the fairways to Austin and Michael who always seem to be there Noreen who looks after the gardens.A final thanks to you the Editor for Publishing our notes every week.
