Bloomfield Roundabout Dear Editor Full marks for the Council for providing a piece of a second lane at Bloomfield Roundabout, although it’s a pity the did not extend it to catch the feeder traffic down Clarkes Hill. Still, it has eased the situation noticeably, although the roundabout needs to be modified somewhat. D.F. O’Callaghan, Monfieldstown.

Anti Social Behavior in Douglas? Dear Editor In a recent issue of the Douglas Post you published a letter from a resident in Alden complaining about the amount of ant-social behavior in the area adjacent to Alden estate. Honestly I don’t know what that reader has to complain about! That anti-social behavior is taking place in an area next to the estate. The real anti-social behavior takes place on the way into the estate, at the school entrance along Inchvale Road. On a daily basis, especially at school times, we see cars parked on both sides of the road, one can’t even see the double yellow lines they cover them so well and obviously the motorists couldn’t care less, after all they have free parking, and no one says a word to them. On top of that they treat the green area as if it is their own personal halting site. There’s no sense of pride of place on their minds nor have they regard for the local residents or those trying to get to Alden. Could an ambulance or a fire engine get through ? Not a chance! But who cares? I suppose we get what we vote for! Regards Frank Merken, Douglas

A pearl of Scottish wisdom: Alcohol does not solve any problem, but then neither does tea or coffee.

Irish solution to an Irish problem? Dear Editor, Times have changed for the better in Ireland in some ways, but what hasn’t changed is our penchant for the nod and wink Irish solution to an Irish problem. This is brought home to me by a statement contained in the Report on State involvement with the Magdalene Laundries. Amid the mass of words and heart-wrenching revelations in the report, a journalist’s anecdote really caught my attention. In his statement he refers to an incident recounted for him by his father, who was a Garda Sergeant at Shandon Garda Station in Cork in the early 1970s. One evening, a nun phoned the station to say that two women had escaped from a Magdalene Laundry. The senior Garda on night shift duty assured her that a car would be sent out immediately to recapture them. But after leaving down the phone, the officer said to his colleagues in the station: “Ah, we’ll just have a cup of tea first. We’ll let the girls make the boat”. A boat was scheduled to depart from Cork docks to England in the coming hours. Fast forward to Ireland 2013. Abortion is a criminal offence, even in the most extreme circumstances such as when a woman or young girl is brutally raped. The law clearly states that anyone who has an abortion could receive a life sentence in prison. We all know this. But sure, isn’t there a way around everything? The Irish State effectively does the same as the Guard back in that darker xenophobic Ireland where ultra-Catholic thinking held sway. It says in effect (in a national whisper): “Now listen here to me. We can’t have that carry-on here. This is a pro-life zone where abortion is anathema. It’s a crime. So what ye’ll do is this. Get on the next boat or plane to England.” So the problem is solved. There is of course a difference between the action of the Shandon Garda officer and the present day exporting of the abortion issue to Britain. He acted in the only way he could in the circumstances to help the escaped women. His was a Schindler-like humanitarian gesture. Today the State is acting as it does because of political cowardice, with only Clare Daly and a handful of other TDs committed to significant reform of the abortion laws. The failure to legislate one way or the other on abortion is compelling thousands of Irish citizens to opt for the same solution as those two women who, in another time under cover of approaching darkness, had to quietly exit their native land. There may be tensions within the coalition government on this issue, but the politicians need to find the courage that so often evades them and face up to their responsibilities at last. It’s no longer good enough, with due respect to that honorable policeman of four decades ago, for the State to say: “We’ll let the girls take the boat”. Thanking you, John Fitzgerald, Lower Coyne Street, Callan, Co. Poetry Corner with Ronnie McGinn

We got quite a shock last week when we heard of the sudden death of our friend Kevin Gregan. Kevin was the husband of our esteemed colleague Marie Piper Gregan in the Douglas Post. On behalf of all of us here in The Douglas Post may I offer our condolences and our sincerest sympathy to Marie and to their sons Daren and Gary, their grandson Ryan and to the entire Gregan and Piper families. Kevin was a good husband and a good family man, an excellent carpenter, loved sport, didn’t drink or smoke, but he knew how to enjoy life, and to me he was a good friend – always in good humour - he even used to jibe me about this column - often passing comments like “What do you know about poetry ?” Rest in Peace Kevin!

Health & Beauty

Different types of Chiropractic? I thought it was all the same… There are a number of difference types of chiropractic techniques. One technique is not better than another - it very much depends on your symptoms, your age, your physical shape and what suits your body. But, regardless of the technique a chiropractor uses, we are all dutybound to provide the best possible care to our patients. As a McTimoney chiropractor myself, if that best possible care is not with me, then I will refer you on to another health practitioner.

The different techniques What of the different chiropractic techniques... well, some people prefer a firmer approach and like to

hear the ‘cracking’ of joints as they are adjusted, which often gives the indication of instance relief. Others are put off by this - especially with neck adjustments - and like a gentler approach. While some chiropractors use instruments to adjust the spine, others concentrate specifically on timing and sequencing with supple, light movements and more treat the muscles that control the spine. But rest assured whatever technique your chiropractor uses, we are all trained professionals and have one goal in common: to adjust bones in the body to maintain correct alignment of the spine (and joints), to ensure the body’s nerve supply works efficiently.

McTimoney Chiropractic What is new to Cork is McTimoney chiropractic. It is an effective, lowforce, gentle, whole-body, technique suitable for all ages and all physical abilities. It is a hands-on treatment with many of the adjustments based on the unique torque-toggle-recoil technique used only by trained McTimoney chiropractors. The adjustment is based on speed and dexterity of individual spinal segments which makes it more precise and accurate than the conventional block thrust approach which is often used. McTimoney chiropractors undergo extensive training to perfect this adjustment and are often trained in

other modalities, such as Physical Therapy. So not alone can they make adjustments, they can also treat soft tissue injuries. This fits perfectly with the whole-body approach to chiropractic treatment advocated by McTimoney chiropractors who believe that it is necessary to address the whole spine - which starts at the base of the skull and ends at the tailbone. As compensatory measures often occur in other areas, McTimoney chiropractors make adjustments to the skull, face, arms, hands, legs and feet to correct joint dysfunction. So next time you are in pain, think about what type of treatment best suits you...

Getting over a cold Being sick with a cold virus for a week or two doesn’t mean you have to be miserable. These remedies may help:

Fluids Drink plenty of liquids. Water, juice, clear broth, or warm water with lemon juice and honey can help loosen congestion.

Saltwater gargle To relieve a sore or scratchy throat, gargle with 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon salt dissolved in a glass of warm water.

Saline nasal drops and sprays These nonprescription products combat stuffiness and congestion.

‘For Help with your Health’ 12 - Thur 21 February ’13

Unlike nasal decongestants, saline drops and sprays used over the long term don’t cause symptoms to get worse once use is discontinued (rebound effect).

Nasal decongestants Limiting use of nasal decongestant products to no more than three consecutive days generally provides symptom relief without the rebound effect.

Chicken soup The soothing qualities of a steaming bowl of soup may be due to its possible mucus-thinning and antiinflammatory effects.

What doesn’t work? Worth noting are antibiotics, which destroy bacteria, but are no help against cold viruses. As for zinc, a recent analysis had mixed results and stopped short of recommending it until more research is done. These days, taking care of yourself is a necessity of life. We make it our mission to provide practical, easy-tounderstand information on topics of interest to people like you! Katie Taylor Master Tactician By Denis Coffey To be very honest my first impression of Women’s Boxing was one of mixed feelings. My curiosity terminated, when, in March 1996, for the first time I saw a few clips on television of Ireland’s Deirdre Gogarty V Christy Martin at the M.G.H Grand Hall in Las Vegas. In my opinion Gogarty outclassed Martin for the six two minute rounds, and I was hooked. Katie Taylor was born on 2nd June 1986 in Bray Co Wicklow. She started boxing at 12 years of age and from the beginning was coached by her father, Peter (Pete) Taylor, a remarkable skilled amateur boxer in his own right. On my first meeting with him, I could see the sincerity and passion he had for the sport of boxing. It left a profound effect on me. Katie has two brothers Lee and Peter and a sister Sarah. Katie’s other sporting interest is Gaelic Football which she played for her local club. She also played in the Women’s Soccer League in Dublin, and lined out for Ireland. My first impression on meeting Katie Taylor was a very humble experience; her good humour and humility as we talked, one could feel the air of relaxation, what more could one ask for! In my opinion Katie Taylor was born with a natural instinctive talent. In the ring before any fight starts, one must pause, accuracy and timing are vital, no time to be impetuous, one careless move can have catastrophic consequences. Great trainers know their fighters almost as well as the fighters know themselves. The trainer will sense when things are right and when they are not. We all remember the great Angelo Dundee, hand and glove trainer, of Mohammad Ali, need I say more, a boxer must • Dennis Coffey with Katie Taylor

have a very close relationship, and absolute faith in his or her trainer since they will entrust their future in their hands. Katie and her father Pete have a winning combination that’s the criteria for success. Katie personifies the hungry fighter in her now fabulous career, which began in 2005 at the European Amateur Championships where she got her first Gold Medal win. She now has a huge reputation in Euope and her winning ways are acknowledged all around the world. Her parents have every right to be proud of their daughter. To say she is a household name in Ireland would be putting it mildly. The reception Katie received in Dublin after the 2012 Olympic Games in London, the generosity and goodwill of the people of Ireland was very evident, generations to come will still be talking about that wonderful day. To say Katie Taylor is a proud Irish woman doesn’t even begin to sum up her passion for her country and of course the fans, and the local people and friends of her home town Bray, Co Wicklow. Katies achievements in the sport of boxing seem to me unsurpassed and surely unsurpassable when she accepted the Gold Medal in the 2012 Olympic Games her speech afterwards was unforgettable and still stirs the soul. Her Trophy Cabinet I would say is fairly crowded. Her high standards and hard training are unequalled and a testament to he continuing success as the world’s greatest Woman Boxer in our time. We as a country will be with her as she returns to the ring on Sunday February 24th! Best wishes always Katie Dennis Coffey

Think You’re Having A Bad Day?… Fire authorities in California found a corpse in a burned-out section of forest while assessing the damage done by a forest fire. The deceased male was dressed in a full wet suit, complete with scuba tanks on his back, flippers and face mask. A post-mortem test revealed that the man died not from burns, but from massive internal injuries. Dental records provided a positive identification. Investigators then set about to determine how a fully clothed diver ended up in the middle of a forest fire. It was revealed that on the day of the fire, the man went diving off the coast, some 20 miles from the forest. The fire fighters, seeking to control the fire as quickly as possible, had called in a fleet of helicopters with very large dip buckets. Water was dipped from the ocean and emptied at the site of the forest fire. You guessed it. One minute our diver was making like Flipper in the Pacific, the next, he was doing the breast stroke in a fire dip bucket 300 feet in the air. Some days it just doesn’t pay to get out of bed.

Reservoir RenewablesThe HEMERA Tired of handing over excessive amounts of money for ever increasing energy bills? Reservoir Renewables have the long term solution that will alleviate extortionate electric, gas or oil costs and banish the somewhat inefficiencies of some renewable energies. See your energy bills diminish before your very eyes with Reservoir Renewables and our innovative technology.

Our team would like to present to you our revolutionary hot water system, The HEMERA. With the HEMERA, there is no longer a need to waste costly energy to power your electric shower, or turn on your immersion or boiler for hot water, our system will do it all. The HEMERA will provide you with 100% of your hot water requirements, 365 days a year and is completely non-reliant on weather conditions. The HEMERA has been developed to operate in the Irish climate and those which experience much colder weather. The HEMERA cylinder simply replaces your existing hot water tank and is then connected to all existing pipework. It then takes the integration of just two ducts, which will run to and from the cylinder, to complete installation. All this is done with no mess and no disruption. In just a matter of hours, your unit can be fully functional in your home or business.

only activates when water is drawn off and so when coupled with its low energy consumption, running costs are kept at a minimum. The HEMERA has been tested and installed throughout Northern Europe and so to operate effectively within the Irish market. Reservoir Renewables system provides convenience, comfort and cost savings. Why not give Adrian or Karl a call today on (087) 6027713 to see what Reservoirs Renewables, innovative heating and water systems, can save you. Cllr Kieran McCarthy

McCarthy’s Design an Adventure Playground, Art Competition

How it Works

In simple terms, the HEMERA system utilises a small portion of energy in the form of air which is otherwise lost from a building. The air is brought back to the unit where its energy is extracted via a process most simply described as reverse refrigeration. This energy is then passed into the water in the inbuilt tank. The HEMERA constantly holds a volume of water whether it be 200 300 or 500 litres at your desired temperature, up to 60*C. The unit

Cllr Kieran McCarthy invites all young budding engineers and architects to participate in “McCarthy’s Design an Adventure Playground”. Interested students are invited to draw a plan for a proposed c.5 acre adventure playground on the Marina. The project is currently being explored by the tourism department of Cork City Council as an attraction for visitors and locals to get use. “Design an Adventure Playground” builds on previous art competitions by Cllr McCarthy. It offers students an opportunity to present ideas of how public spaces may look from a user point of view and will be viewed by the engineer responsible for drafting the new design. The competition is run in association with Lifetime Lab ‘Meet the Engineer’s” Free Family Fun Day to celebrate Engineer’s Week 2013 on Saturday 2 March 2013 (2-5pm). Entry is free of charge with prizes awarded for best design, best drawing and best concept. There are several age groups, 4-6, 7-9, 10-12 and Junior Certificate and Leaving Certificate for secondary school students. Cllr McCarthy, who is heading up the event, noted: “The new adventure playground will be one of the most exciting additions to the wide ranging amenities available in Cork City. I am encouraging creation, innovation and imagination amongst our young people, to think about what should be in the playground”. All entries should be forwarded to Lifetime Lab before Tuesday 26 February 2013. Drawings can be made on A4 or A3 sheets. They can be mounted if the student wishes. It is the intention to display all drawings on ‘Meet the Engineer’s Day’ and have the winners marked. Prizes will be awarded to drawings that are of a high standard and in particular, which demonstrate colour, creativity and imagination. On the back of the drawing, the name, age, teacher and school of the student should be clearly marked. A rough plan and guide to the c.5 acre site and more information is available at www.kieranmccarthy.ie under the blog section and community events. Students should be encouraged to think about how the different parts of the land could be put to use. Further information can be attained from Kieran McCarthy, email: info@kieranmccarthy.ie or 0876553389.

Paper-Eating Dog A Priest delivered a sermon in 10 minutes one Sunday morning, which was about half the usual length of his sermons. He explained, “I regret to inform you that my dog, who is very fond of eating paper, ate that portion of my sermon which I was unable to deliver this morning.” After the mass, a visitor from another parish shook hands with the priest and said, “Father, if that dog of yours has any pups, I want to give one to my priest.”

“Cooking with the Pro’s” The Tourism and Hospitality Department at Cork Institute of Technology once again hosted an initiative that aims to educate teens with Diabetes about healthy food in an informal environment. The Time to Talk support group, for teens living with Type 1 diabetes, is organised by the southern branch of Diabetes Ireland. This event took place during mid-term break in February 2013. The College is particularly suited for the project since it has extensive specialist culinary and tourism education and training facilities and has been described as one of the finest such facilities in the country. Fifteen Teenagers with Type 1 diabetes spent an afternoon cooking a range of healthy and tasty dishes prepared with the 2nd year Bachelor of Business in Culinary Arts students under the direction of lecturer/course co-ordinator Catherine O’ Mahony. The session concluded with all participants sitting down to enjoy the extensive menu that had been prepared. Ms Shirley Beattie, Paediatric Diabetes Dietitian at Cork University Hospital was on hand to guide the teenagers and culinary students in making the right choices from a range

of recipes from Diabetes Irelands website. The dishes were drawn from the large range of recipes available from www.diabetes.ie. Mr. Adrian Gregan, Head of Tourism and Hospitality Studies said, “We are delighted to offer our facilities to host such an event, we recognise that our graduate culinary students need to have a full understanding of the role of food in contributing to better health. This is an ideal opportunity to showcase our state of the art culinary facilities and lecture theatres that offer an optimal environment to meet the educational requirements of our future learners.

A Bit on the Light Side Sean and his wife, Aoife, had been debating buying a new car for weeks. He wanted a pick-up-truck. She wanted a fast little sportslike car so she could zip around through the traffic in town. He would probably have settled on any old pick-up-truck, but everything she seemed to like was way out of their price range. “Look!” she said. “I want something that goes from 0 to 200 in just a few seconds. Nothing else will do. My birthday is coming up so surprise me!” Sean did just that. For her birthday, he bought her a brand new bathroom scale. Nobody has seen or heard from him since.

Young @ Heart by Phil Goodman

We forever strive to improve the quality of the lives of our older people and with that in mind we plan to have a home visiting service here in Douglas, our volunteers will visit people who live or feel alone and would just like someone to talk to. Volunteers can provide friendship, social contact and opportunities for participating in community activities if this interests the older person. As a regular visitor the volunteer can contribute to improving the quality of life of an older person. During the visit they have a chat and inform the older person of local services and activities which are taking place in the community, this sharing can enable a greater involvement of older people in the community. One in 10 older people in Ireland suffer from depression and what is alarming is that depression among the old is sometimes viewed as a natural side effect of ageing; Depression is not something that should be accepted as an unavoidable consequence of growing older. Maintaining social contacts, involvement in activities in the community, people who are physically and mentally active are less likely to become depressed. Life is full of stresses and changes that can lead to people feeling isolated and lonely. Loneliness is about feeling separate from others or a sense of being alone in the world. “Physical pain and social pain have a lot in common” if you would like to volunteer for the home visitation and commit to one hour a week you can contact me on 4363867 for further information. All volunteers will be Garda vetted and HSE trained. Of all people the elderly or infirm living alone are the most vulnerable and need to feel safe and secure in their homes. We recommend you avail of the 100%grant funded personal alarms which enables them to retain their independence and freedom in their own homes, secure in the knowledge that their link to the outside world is always with them, any time day or night 7 days a week 24 hours a day one touch of a simple button is sufficient to summon

help. Within seconds your call will be answered and dealt with promptly. Spring time is a time we see new growth and the bulbs shooting up in the ground, we look forward to Summer with lots of trips and events; we are going to see the Lion King on 28th May in Bord Gais theatre in Dublin stay overnight and visit Trinity College and see the book of Kells on the following day 29th ,anyone interested give me a call. THOUGHT FOR TODAY Evening in the Harvest Field. The last man passes through the gate; the long day’s work is done. The golden stubbles catch the glory of the setting sun. Brighter glows the gleam of lamps behind the cottage panes. Fainter grows the distant sound of voices in the lanes….. Tomorrow they will come again their labours to complete. But tonight how strangely lovely is this field of wheat! On the gathered sheaves a holy silence seems to brood – like the hush that falls upon a praying multitude. New cystic fibrosis drug ivacaftor (Kalydeco) to be made available for Irish patients Ciarán Lynch TD has welcomed the announcement of a new innovative medicine for the treatment of cystic fibrosis (CF) in patients who have the G551D mutation, will be made available for patients in Ireland from 1st March next. The decision was made following a request from the Director General Designate of the HSE, Tony O’Brien for a policy direction, prior to its implementation. Cystic Fibrosis is a genetic condition caused by mutations in the CF transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) protein and Kalydeco is the first in a new class of drugs known as CFTR potentiators. As just over 10% of patients with CF in Ireland have the G551D mutation it is estimated that approximately 120 patients will be suitable for treatment with the new drug. As with all new drugs Kalydeco was assessed by the National Centre for Pharmacoeconomics (NCPE) in January 2013. The assessment acknowledged the benefits of the drug including significant improvements in lung function, increased body weight, improvement in patients’ quality of life and a 55% reduction in pulmonary exacerbations. The assessment did however highlight the high cost of the drug at over € 234,000 per patient per annum and the significant budget impact at over € 28 million per annum. The NCPE recommended against reimbursing the drug at the submitted price but suggested mechanisms such as a risk sharing scheme in addition to a price reduction could enable patients to gain access to Kalydeco. The NCPE recommendation led to follow-up discussions between the HSE Corporate Pharmaceutical Unit and the Company, Vertex Pharmaceuticals. These discussions provided a mechanism where the drug could be made available to patients whilst at the same time reducing significantly the budget impact of the drug. They were considered by the HSE Drugs Group and a positive recommendation was made supporting the provision of Kalydeco for Irish CF patients.

Know Your Rights: Changes to household benefits Question: I’m living alone, aged over 70 and getting the Household Benefits Package. I understand it has been affected by Budget 2013. Can you tell me what the changes are?

Answer: Yes, the Household Benefits Package has been changed in Budget 2013. The value of the Electricity/ Gas Allowance and the Telephone Allowance will be reduced for new and existing recipients from Jan 2013. The Electricity Allowance is being adjusted from a unit-based allowance to a fixed amount of €35 per month. The Gas Allowance was previously paid at different winter and summer rates. From January 2013 it will be paid at a new standard monthly rate of €35. These allowances can be paid either as a credit on your bill or as a cash allowance, depending on your supplier and your payment method. This change does not affect your choice of supplier and you can choose the supplier who can best meet your energy needs. There are various

commercial websites that allow you to compare energy prices. The Commission for Energy Regulation (CER) accredits cost comparison websites if they meet certain standards. You can check accredited websites on energycustomers.ie. The Telephone Allowance is a payment towards your mobile phone or your landline phone bill. The value of this allowance will be reduced from €22.58 to a new monthly rate of €9.50. This will show as a credit on your bill or can be paid as a cash allowance. There is no change to the Free TV Licence, the Fuel Allowance, Free Travel or Living Alone Allowance Know Your Rights has been compiled by Blackrock Citizens Information Service which provides a free and confidential service to the public. €8.3 million to improve availability of sustainable transport Cork South Central Fine Gael TD Jerry Buttimer said last week that an investment of more than €8.3 million will improve the availability of sustainable transport in Cork. “The Government has committed to an investment in Cork of more than €8.3 million to improve the availability of sustainable transport across the city. The areas to benefit include Carrigaline, Crosshaven, Douglas, Passage West and across all areas of the city. “The percentage of commuters in Cork who use public transport and bicycles is very low. The only way we can ever increase the use of sustainable transport is to make it accessible when and where people need it. This funding will make it easier for people to use sustainable transport, improving the walking, cycling and public transport experience across the city. “This funding will provide footpaths and crossings at Cooney’s Lane, Cogan’s Corner and at schools in Crosshaven and Passage West. In Douglas funding is being provided to advance the Land Use & Transportation Study which aims to improve walking, cycle and public transport facilities. Importantly the final section of a bus priority project on Maryborough Hill is being funded by this announcement. “In the South East of the city funding has been provided for the completion of pedestrian and cycle facilities on Boreenmanna Road. At Dennehy’s Cross the operation of the junction will be improved with changes to the traffic signals and adjustments to the road alignment. “All of these projects are at different phases of development, some have been completed and others have not yet begun. I hope that the effect of these initiatives will be to improve the operation of traffic junctions, making it easier for all road users across the city.”

Our Lady of Lourdes School Concert Ballinlough Community Association wish to congratulate Our Lady of Lourdes school on their fund raising concert in the School of Music on Friday night. It was a great concert, what talent passed through the school! The school was opened in 1943, so this year they are celebrating 70 years. There was always great emphasis on singing and drama in the school. The late Miss Lynch founded the Knockrea singers, who came together to sing in the concert. Most of the performers were past pupils. Mary Hegarty the renowned Cork Soprano was to be the ‘star’ of the show, unfortunately she hurt her back, and was unable to perform. Majella Cullagh stood in for Mary at very short notice and thrilled the audience with her singing accompanied by Eleanor Malone the well known accompanist. Other performers on the night included The School Choir, Lorraine Manley, Alex Glennon, Molly Lynch, The Four of Us, Zoe Nagle, Jesse Ray, Richard Lucey, Brian and Hugh Murray. Congratulations to all the great teachers of our Lady of Lourdes school both past and present.

Every Monday night in the Kinsale Temperance Hall women have been dancing the man’s part and they would like some real men to dance with. “They’re not looking for Michael Flately, just some males, young or not so young, that are willing to dance with them,” Fionan Cogan, Dancing Master, told the newspaper. He will be on hand to help you along if you need a bit of guidance in the right direction. You can contact Fionan directly on 087 818 5111 or email ceilifit@ gmail.com. CAROUSEL Brainteazer Last Week’s Teazer:

This Week’s Teazer

Ali ben-Ibrahim was a salt dealer, every day he went to the market with two huge sacks of salt tied to his donkey. One hot day, as they passed along the banks of the Tigris River, the donkey broke free from Ali and plunged into the cool water. When the salt-seller finally got the beast to leave the river, it immediately noticed that much of the salt had dissolved was therefore considerably lighter. After that, no matter how hard Ali tried, he could not prevent the donkey from diving into the river and ruining its load of salt. But when it came to lateral thinking Ali himself was no slouch. One day he loaded up the donkey and, as usual, the animal plunged into the river. Then it learned its lesson and never tried that trick again. What had Ali done?

When the police arrived a man was lying under the car dead. Investigation revealed that although he was not the car’s owner he was the last person to drive it. The car had last been driven that morning but the man’s time of death was established at about 3PM. The car’s owner was discovered in France. Eventually the police and the coroner were satisfied that no crime had been committed. What is the explanation?

Family Ties with Geraldine Blake

Health is everything All this healthy eating is hard work. It’s a case of fail to prepare, prepare to fail. Since January 1st, I am on a less dairy, more omega 3/nuts/seeds and salads regime. I have to eat the salads in the anonymity of my kitchen: there is no elegant way to eat a plate of leaves; it’s like trying to eat a bush with a knife and fork. Every other day I make a healthy soup from scratch. I even went so far as to boil a chicken carcass to make an authentic stock but the resulting soup was so bland that I have resorted back to stock cubes; to hell with the sodium. I had a moan with my super fit work colleague, who runs for an hour every day in her lunch break and cycles seven miles to and from work every day in all weathers, about what a trudge it is to eat healthily. She replied that it wasn’t healthy eating but normal eating. She quoted a magazine article that she had read recently; do not eat anything your grandmother wouldn’t recognise; put lots of colour on your plate and never eat anything from a place where you go to fill up your car. That really caught my imagination. That very afternoon while I was at the filling station and was queuing up to

pay, I looked around and sure enough the shop was filled with sponges, scented window cleaning fluid, plastic floor mats but also an extensive range of bubble gum, fizzy drinks and long shelf life baked ‘goodies’. Every morning I religiously eat my orange (for the vitamin C and fibre) and banana. I was happy to read that the banana contains a chemical beginning with T. that enhances the production of serotonin - the happiness chemical - in the body. Three cheers for the banana. Six weeks on, there have been no miracles but all those hours of hacking vegetables and chomping my way through the leaves and nuts is paying off. I haven’t shed any pounds but I can feel the old fizz coming back and I have more energy. Last Saturday, I went on a thirteen mile hike with two friends along the Kerry Way from Killarney to Kenmare. It was fantastic. I am paying for it now as my body aches from buttock to calf; I walk like Neil Armstrong on the moon but mentally I feel top notch. The pain will pass and when I walk upright again, Skibbereen will be next on our hot list for hiking. Health is everything.

Home & G arden Things to do This Week The first crocuses always take you by surprise. You never seem to see them coming. They spring up overnight. Quite suddenly you become aware of patches of yellow under the trees and flecks of gold along the edges of the path. Soon the whole garden will be fairy-lit with the little crocus candles of ivory and lavender, but it is the bold yellow firstlings that take your breath away. Every year it happens and every year you feel the same old astonishment. So once more it’s time to get ready for the days ahead. We’ll try to give you a few ideas on what might need doing. Now not everything in this article may apply to you or to your garden - but there might be something, if not this week maybe next week.

Flower Garden Start planting anemone De Caen and St. Brigid outdoors for summer flowers. For high quality blooms, dig and manure a trench for sweet peas. Sow candytuft among and around spring bulbs to flower and disguise the fading bulb foliage.

Kitchen Garden Make main sowings of broad beans outdoors. Sow an early pea variety in the open, and repeat every 3-4 weeks. Plant out autumn-sown cauliflowers. Make new mint beds, and divide and replant existing ones. Sow parsnips, salsify and scorzonera, under cloches for faster germination in cold gardens. Dig and manure a trench for runner beans.

Lawns & Hedges

Water Garden

Repair edges and sow bare patches on lawns; cover with net or black cotton to deter birds. Lay turf to make new lawns.

Add new marginal and bog garden plants

Green House

Continue feeding and watering azaleas and bulbs in containers after their flowers

Take soft cuttings of geraniums, fuchsias, dahlias, coleus and winter bE’gon las as their shoots develop. Start begonia tubers into growth on the surface of trays of moist compost. Sow celery and celeriac in gentle heat. Divide canna roots and pot up to start into growth for summer bedding. Bring bags of compost into the greenhouse to warm up before use.

In General

have faded, to build them up for next year. Overhaul equipment such as pressure sprayers, replacing washers and other parts if necessary.

Douglas Hall FC by Finbarr Buckley Umbro U-12 Local Cup Douglas Hall 2 ; Riverstown 1

The Hall edged past the visitors at windy Moneygourney on Saturday morning. After conceding a penalty, the hosts responded by conjuring an equalizer before half-time , when the lively Eamonn Kiely drove a free-kick to the back of the net. The second half was evenly contested as both teams searched for the winner. The deadlock was finally broken by Kiely, who tucked away a through ball from Kevin Collins. Credit must go to both teams for providing such an entertaining game in such difficult conditions. Best for the home side were Eoin Coughlan and a man- of- the- match performance from Jack Ryan. Umbro U-12 Division One Mayfield 0; Douglas Hall 4

The visitors l came away with comprehensive win, Cian Duggan & Evan Donlon ruling the roost in midfield. It was no surprise when the Hall took an early lead when Alan O’Hare finished to the net after good work from Alex Walsh. The Hall continued to press and were rewarded when Eamonn Kiely ran onto a through ball to score before half time, before going on to complete a hattrick with a further two superb goals in the second half. Ross Bailey and Cian Punch also impressed for the Hall. Roy Keane U-13 Premier Douglas Hall 1; Midleton 0

A last minute equalizer gave the Hall a share of the points in a

thoroughly enjoyable encounter at Moneygourney. Umbro U-16 Local Cup Douglas Hall 2 ; Buttevant 3

Buttevant won this cup tie through their determination to never give up as throughout the match they were outplayed by a Hall side who created many scoring chances but failed to convert them into goals. Luis Franco and David Barry scored for the Hall with Eoghan O’Leary and Diermuid O’Mahoney superb throughout. Umbro U-16 First Division College Corinthians 0; Douglas Hall 2

Douglas took the lead mid way when David Barry chased what looked like a lost cause and dispossessed the keeper before hitting the net. With very little between the sides and the home side pushing for the equalizer, Jack Austin was put through by Eoghan O’Leary and easily slipped the ball past the onrushing keeper to double his teams lead. Barry Fitzgerald and Cian Marnane worked tirelessly for their team and contributed in a huge way to this local derby win.

“It is with great sadness that I learned today of the death of a true Irish legend, Seán Óg Ó Ceallacháin,” said Deputy Martin. “Seán Óg was the voice of gaelic games in households across the country for over six decades. College Corinthians With Terry O’Donovan Schoolboys Section Under 12 Premier Division Corinthian Boys win 6 - 0

Adam Callanan and Adam Casey gave Corinthians a deserved advantage at half time, however it should have been 3 to the good when a superbly struck free kick from Donal Maher hit the back of the net only for the ref to blow for half time with the ball in mid flight.

Corinthian Boys started well, playing good football and took the lead after 10 minutes, from a good move down the right. Adam Idah put Mark Hill clear on the right and his cross was headed home by David Fox. Corinthians added a second after 15 minutes, when Adam Idah’s free kick from the edge of the box was blocked, Conor Murphy slotted home. David Fox added a third and his second after 25 minutes.

The second half was a more even affair and in fairness to Crosshaven they piled on the pressure at times. It was a fine team performance with James Adrenian , Dylan Ameed and Daniel Waligora all having chances to secure the result in what was an entertaining second half. The fresh Legs of Oskar Pryzwara and Fintan Cullinane during the second half secured the win.

Corinthian Boys achieved a welldeserved 6 – 0 victory over Lakewood Athletic at home, ensuring they maintain their position at the top of the League.

Corinthians again in the second half dominated the game, playing some very good football. They scored their fourth after two minutes in the second half with a fine left foot strike from Brian Hayes. Brian went on to score a hat trick adding a fifth and sixth goal for Corinthians, with excellent strikes following some very good team build up play. Corinthian Boys played very well, created numerous opportunities throughout the game and were deserving winners. They now have 5 games left to play in the League and have a minimum 6 point advantage, depending on the results of 3 games in hand which Springfield have to play. The team now moves on to play Innishvilla away in the League next weekend. Team: Richard Lombard, Mark Hill 50 mins, Niall Hartnett (David Murphy 35 mins), Scott Philpott, Liam Edwards (Oisin O’Keeffe 35 mins), Adam Idah (Fionn Molloy 35 mins), Conor Murphy, Daniel Harte, Leo Barron (Joseph Harte 30 mins), Jeff Holden (Brian Hayes 30 mins) and David Fox. A somewhat lacklustre game where we were never and were comfortable throughout. Colin O Brien opened the scoring after 8 minutes when he put his head to a Ross Welch cross 10 minutes later good passing between Alex O Driscoll and Ross Welch resulted in Ross scoring from close range.

• Douglas Community School athletes Junior Boys Team

An unfortunate error by an Avondale player put us 3-0 up at half time. The second half was more of the same by Corinthians, on the 50 minute mark Colin O Brien gave a super cross field pass to Ross Welch who’s cross was hammered home by Mark O Leary for his first goal of the season. Right on full time a second o.g. by Avondale made the final score 5-0 All thoughts move to the vital game away to Kentstown being played in Johnstown next Saturday in the last 16 of the National Cup. Team: Stephen Jermyn, Harry Shanahan, Sean Desmond, Alex O Driscoll, Mark O Leary, David O Regan, Chris Og Jones, Ross Welch (Bryan Cotter 53 mins), Colin O Brien, David Nason (James Holland 48 mins), Stephen Fox (Dean Swords HT).
