Speak up for the innocent

Cheers! “I feel sorry for people who don’t drink. When they wake up in the morning, that’s as good as they’re going to feel all day. “ ~Frank Sinatra

Dear Editor, In Ireland today a great evil is being orchestrated. Innocent people may soon be “legally” killed in this country. Our leaders are doing just what Hitler and other tyrants did in the past. They are legitimising grave injustice under the guise of feeble excuses. We live for but a moment and then we will be judged. Christ will soon ask each of us, “When I was hungry, did you give me to eat?” If we claim that we never saw Him hungry, He will say, “as long as you did it to one of these my least brethren, you did it to me.” We must be the voice for these, the most vulnerable, the unborn threatened with extermination. Come to the rally for life on the 6th of July in Dublin and do all you can to speak up for the innocent, so gravely endangered at this most crucial hour.

ARTS

Thursday 27.06.2013

Yes, the girl that I met at The Statue became my adorable wife. As we bring up four children together without any bother or fuss, We hope that they’ll follow tradition and continue doing Pana like us. Well, we still like to stroll out together, around by The Lough is our beat, And sometimes we’d do The Marina, such a colourful, peaceful retreat. Then often she’d make a suggestion to visit another terrain, And we‘d take the bus into The Statue, and go back doing Pana again.

Billy McCarthy a founder member of the Douglas Writers Group, who’s first book “Barnetstown to Ballinglanna” , a selection of short stories and poems taken from his earliest experiences in life to the present day, rekindled many a fond thought and lost memory in every reader, is the author of this weeks poem.

Billy McCarthy

Billy is a great exponent of traditional style writing and some of his poems have been set to music. In this poem he takes us back to Cork in the sunny long ago when Patrick Street was the most romantic place in Ireland.

Send your poem to ‘The Poetry Corner’ / The Douglas Post, Unit 29C, St Patrick’s Mills, Douglas or you can email it direct to ronniemcginn@eircom.net. If possible keep your poem to 20 lines. You may choose any subject you like, in any form you like as long as it’s original. We look forward to hearing from you.

“Doing Pana”

I remember my first date in Pana by appointment at quarter past seven, When I stepped off the bus at The Statue it seemed like I’d landed in Heaven. I slipped her a wink – she responded, with a smile and we strolled hand-in-hand, Down the length of the street and believe me, I felt like a prince of the land. Scarce a word between us was uttered; sure it wasn’t a time for small talk We just window-shopped along Pana, on this beautiful night for a walk. When the length of the street we had covered, as we crossed to the opposite side With my arm round her waist for protection as the street was so terribly wide. We continued our promenade northward at a pace so romantically slow, Sure this was the way we did Pana in those carefree days long ago. Then a stop at The Old Bridge was standard, for a mug of tea and a bun. And many a friendship was made here and many a romance begun. Up one side and down by the other was the custom we knew at the time, As our parents had done so before us, and for them just like us ‘twas sublime. We were hardly aware of the traffic, or others who passed by the way, For we only had eyes for each other, and we kept thoughts of others at bay. Then ‘twas great as we passed the Lee corner and the fellas would stand and they’d stare, I could see they were all green with envy, while me, sure I hadn’t a care, As I knew we were only repeating what others enacted before, And I couldn’t care less so I said to herself “let’s go ‘round and do Pana once more”. Yes, that was the custom in those days; entertainment being scarce at the time, And a walk in the moonlight was heaven for us in the peak of our prime. Though you’d see older folk promenading, her arm linked in his as they strolled, And you’d think to yourself sure when all’s said and done it’s not really so bad being old. Now time is a great educator, so enjoy what you’re handed in life,

My car broke down the other night. It was a typical hectic Monday evening for me; collect the youngest from GAA at 6pm, then head up to Donnybrook for the eldest who finishes soccer at 6.30 and the middle guy, same venue but he didn’t finish until 7.oopm. I brought along my Stephen King book and told them to run around and play until it was time to go. Thank God for long summer evenings. At 7pm, the three boys climbed into the car sweaty, weary and starving for their dinner. I went to start the car. The battery was dead. I rang our insurance company which offered a break down service and help line which must be in Scotland judging by the accent. I told the girl that I didn’t know the name of the hill I was on but that I was in Donnybrook, Douglas. She said that a mechanic would be out in an hour. The boys started whining. I rang my mother and sacrificing Coronation Street; she was out like a bullet and whisked them away leaving me to my fate. I had my book and an unexpected quiet hour, I was content. An hour later, my mobile rang and a thick Dublin accent said, “How’re ya?” My heart sank. I said, “You’re in Dublin, aren’t you?” He said, “Yeah, I’m in Donnybrook, where are you?” Wrong Donnybrook. I told him that I was in Cork to which he replied, “Well I’m no good to you so, am I?!” and hung up. I rang the insurance company again. I was told that I was now ‘Priority’ but that nobody could get to me before 10pm. I explained to the girl that I was in a football ground which was due to be locked up in the next half an hour. Miss Helpful suggested that I find a man to wheel the car out onto the road and to wait there. I went looking for manly assistance. I approached my son’s coach and he and two others readily agreed to push me out the gate. It was comical driving steadily backwards across a field with three men on my bonnet. Once on the road, the coach suggested that since I was near the top of the hill, I should freewheel down and try jump start the car myself by pumping the clutch. I had seen my father do it countless times as a child in our knackered car; the 12 year old thrill seeker inside of me was tempted to take on the challenge of careering through a residential area in an out-of-control car. The three of them were about to launch me when the rescue man suddenly appeared. Mass murder averted. The rescue guy said the break down service were hopeless and suggested that I take up membership with the AA right after I buy a new battery. I’ve actually been very lucky with my breakdowns, they always happen within walking distance of home and on summer evenings when I’m not rushing anywhere. My guardian angel is definitely paying attention!

Best Man – A play by Carmel Winters

Ruaille Buaille Night A traditional night like no other in Cork 7pm Every Tuesday Night till Late

Best Man centres around the breakdown of a family through Ireland’s boom and bust years. The staging of the play is a triumph, with clever use of multimedia projections to create not only a believable space but also an engaging atmosphere. The difficulty though is whether the same can be said about the play itself. There are certainly stand-out performances and Kate Stanley Brennan as Marta and Bryan Murphy as Denis deserve to be singled out for their lively, engaging and emotionally heartfelt acting. The problem however is that a good team of actors is saddled with limp direction and a predictable script. Whilst the play revels in its knowledge of the upper middle class and especially south side Dublin it’s difficult to discern what, if anything, new it actually has to say. Even with its more risqué material the play still seems safe, conventional and lacking bite. The real problem is that the story is told through vignettes which whilst being conceptually interesting don’t allow the audience to form a bond with the characters. Too often the scene ends leaving you waiting for an emotional climax or connection. At times it’s painfully obvious you are watching a fiction and it’s disappointing that the themes the play deals with are not handled with more depth or daring. Occasionally Best Man is excellent, but some great performances and witty lines are not enough to redeem what overwhelmingly feels like a missed opportunity.

On Friday 28 June, Cllr Kieran McCarthy is giving a tour of Cork Docklands leaving from Kennedy Park, Victoria Road at 7pm (free). The tour aims to mark the visit, fifty years ago to Cork, by US President John F Kennedy. On 28 June 1963, he spent the morning in Cork where he received the Freedom of the City. He later left the city by helicopter from Monahan Road and from what in time became known as Kennedy Park. His visit to the city can be explored in the newspapers from the time and in film (google the youtube footage “John F Kennedy in Cork, Ireland, June 28th 1963”). Perhaps it was a message of hope that JFK carried on his visit to Ireland and to cities such as Cork on his way back to the US from Berlin in June 1963. Indeed, he received the freedom of Cork, Dublin, Galway, Limerick and Wexford. President Kennedy’s itinerary meant that helicopter was his means of transport on trips through the country. Half an hour before President Kennedy arrived in Cork, an emergency call went out from the secret service that one of the two open cars to be used in the procession had broken down. Twenty minutes later a Cork firm had supplied a black 1937 Rolls-Royce. As the motorcade progressed towards the city centre the crowds thickened. Again and again his car had some difficulty in getting through and had to stop more than once. At Cork City Hall the Cork Lord Mayor, Alderman Seán Casey, TD, opened his address to Kennedy by noting “You stand for the weak against the strong, for right against might”. Continuing the Lord Mayor noted that Kennedy was receiving the Freedom of the City “in token of our pride that this descendant of Irish emigrants should have been elected to such an exalted office and of our appreciation of his action in coming to visit the country of his ancestors; as a tribute to his unceasing and fruitful work towards the attainment of prosperity and true peace by all the people of the world, and in recognition of the close ties that have always existed between our two countries”.

Wisdom to make you smile Last week, I stated this woman was the ugliest woman I had ever seen. I have since been visited by her sister, and now wish to withdraw that statement.. - Mark Twain

Young at Heart

We had a great reaction to our Digital Door Viewers last week. Thanks for all your enquiries regarding our product. This week we are going to talk about the threat of bogus callers in our community. Bogus callers are “professional” at what they do. They pry on all people in our community, especially the vulnerable in our area. They will target a weakness that you may have. Perhaps a roof slate is missing or gutters need to be cleaned. They can operate in a number of ways. They can call to your door and tell you they are doing work in the area and will offer you a “good” price for a job. They may carry out the job and then tell you that there was more work, so therefore the price has increased. They will let you believe that you are almost lucky they arrived to your door! The other scam that is popular is that they will agree to clean your gutters and ask for money upfront to buys cleaning materials. It may be small money (€10). They will take your money and never come back to you. If they managed to get 5 of your neighbours in your neighbourhood, that’s €50 for an hour’s work! The most important thing to remember when it comes to Bogus callers is never be embarrassed that you have been caught out. Some people are too ashamed to report it to the Gardai or a family member. Remember that the faster you report the caller, the faster they can be caught and prevented from conning someone else in your area. If you have a Digital Door Viewer fitted, you will have photograph of the person to show to your family or Gardai. There are so many reputable companies in Douglas and the surrounding area who will be happy to do work for you. They will always give an invoice and will have identification with them. Ask your friends for recommendations for local companies. If you are in doubt about someone who calls to your door, ask them to call back when you have a member of your family with you. If they call back, they are probably legitimate, if not, you may have had a luck escape from a bogus caller. If you feel that you are a victim of a bogus caller, let a family member know or contact your local Garda Station. Next time, we will be featuring “From the Eyes of a Burglar”.

Parking Restrictions during Building Phase in Park

We will have to close the car park to the general public for the duration of the construction phase. We do apologise for any inconvenience that may arise, however we do feel that this action is in the best interest of all those who will continue to use the facility while work is ongoing. Pedestrian access to the community centre and the park will remain in place from both Church Road and Church Street. Cork Co. Council have provided public parking at Lion House, Church Rd. and at the back of St. Patrick’s Woollen Mills for €3 per day. There is pedestrian access from the Mill through to Galway’s Lane to Douglas West. Please note that on-street parking is free for the first 10 minutes, is 20 cent for 15 minutes and 80 cent for an hour.

Preparing for the egg and spoon race at the recent Summer fun night at Willow Park

This service will continue at the centre. In relation to members of the public who need to visit the Community Welfare Officer, our caretakers will man the gates for the duration of this service and will facilitate parking where possible.

Douglas Tidy Towns Update

Literally dozens of planters have been filled and planted with flowers all over Douglas which will delight the eye of motorists and passersby and give us all a lift. This group of people are a great example of J.F. Kennedy’s advice: ‘ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country!’ They all have busy lives and still they get out there at least once weekly on Saturday mornings from 10-noon. During the summer season and coming up to the Tidy Towns Competition, they are often out a second night in the week. Watering the planters is a very onerous task expecially when we have several days without rain and high winds. So if anyone who lives near one of those areas with a planter would water them doing a dry spell, it would be most appreciated. If you’re keen on gardening, or if you would like to learn and have a ‘can-do’ attitude, please join us at the Community Park every Saturday morning from 10 to noon where you will be welcomed with open arms.

Send your community event news to frontdesk@douglaspost.ie before 5 PM on Mondays.

Kinsale focus

Kinsale: Jewel Beside the Sea

By Frank J. Hannover With the Kinsale Arts Festival www. kinsaleartsfestival.com a becking between July 6th and 14th, Cork minds often turn at this time to the desire of good weather allied to the plethora of fine dining and interest that Kinsale, Cork county’s ‘jewel beside the sea’ perhaps more than any other place represents. A short hop from the city whether you travel by car or utilise the daytime bus service, Kinsale offers everyone activities and events that make for the creation of enduring memories of good times but that’s as true of early July as it is more generally at any other time of the year. Kinsale is beautiful, historical, charming as well as cultural and it begs engrossment throughout its laneways and streets as well as its townlands and headlands regardless of the traveller’s age. It oozes intrigue, maritime fascination and a seemingly endless number of perspectives with which to view this resplendent slice of Cork life. As ever, the Festival presents a great diversity of art and culture and hits the sweet spot of interest for people of all ages in its bill of fare. Everybody from Sinead Cusack to DJ Kormac plays this year’s festival and getting onto the website facilitates the purchase of tickets while it whets the appetite for the sheer variety of event on offer. The much hoped for weather that July is apparently to bring therefore marks Kinsale out as a must-go-to destination for everybody seeking glimmering delights. Page 14

Monty’s: A Cut Above in Midleton By Frank J. Hannover

Ross and Sophie of Monty’s in Midleton -find them online at www. montyssandwiches.com as well as at Monty’s of Midleton on Facebook- are really cutting a remarkable dash with their elegant emporium which comprises a wonderful sandwich bar and a delectable shop on site that facilitates those whose palates discern the delicious ingredients offered. Says Ross, “At Roxboro Mews just off Main Street, our attempt is to establish a gourmet sandwich bar, one that offers the most delicious and locally sourced fillings while at the same time offering the range of Badger & Dodo coffees from Fermoy.” Monty’s use Jack McCarthy’s meats and of course Arbutus bread in what is fast coming to be recognised both online and by word-of-mouth as an exciting departure for this style of menu in tranquil surroundings that offers easy access to all that Midleton presents. It’s unsurprising that Monty’s is coming to be celebrated in that everything; the sandwiches, salads and cakes are made on a daily basis thereby guaranteeing nutritional excellence and delight for the taste buds. Ross adds, “to be honest sandwich bars are often pricey and we seek to come in that bit below in price”, so the good value that’s so important to people nowadays especially around the purchase of lunch practically demands that it’s well worth your while to visit Monty’s of Midleton as soon as you can. Monty’s is really a cut above anything similar.

75th Anniversary of Our Lady of Lourdes Church

Local historian Kieran McCarthy is penning a book on Ballinlough to mark the 75th Anniversary of Our Lady of Lourdes Church. Over a hundred people have been interviewed to tell their memories, history, and stories of their childhood growing up in Ballinlough. The book is now at an advantaged stage. It is the first time a book of this content has been undertaken in the South side of Cork. Six months of interviews, travelling, and research has been undertaken by Kieran. The book will be launched in September to coincide with the Anniversary of the Church. This book will be snapped up quickly, as already people are enquiring about it, especially from families that have had a family person interviewed, and will feature in the book, also from people that wish to send it to members of their family’s living abroad.

€6.4 billion investment fund delivers on key commitment Chairman of the Oireachtas Finance Committee, Deputy Ciaran Lynch, has welcomed the publication of the NTMA (Amendment) Bill 2013 to establish a €6.4 billion Ireland Strategic Investment Fund (ISIF). €6.4 billion of the National Pension Reserve Fund’s discretionary portfolio has been allocated to the Strategic Investment Fund. This will allow for investment in key sectors and infrastructure aimed at growing jobs and attracting economic investment. “This is the first time that a fund specifically to support job creation and economic development has been established in Ireland. “It clearly delivers on a key Labour election commitment to establish a dedicated strategic investment programme targeted at job growth and generating economic activity. “I would like to strongly commend my colleagues Ministers Brendan Howlin and Pat Rabbitte for their work in establishing this important new job-creation fund. “Since entering government, Labour ’s overriding focus has been on jobs and on getting people back to work. The most recent CSO figures indicated that the unemployment rate had fallen to 13.7%, the first time since 2010 that the figure has dropped below 14%. This continues the very positive downward trend in the jobless figures and I hope the new Strategic Investment Fund will now play an important role in driving the jobless rate down even further.” The rates of payment are €100 for children between the age of 4 and 11 years and €200 for children between 12 and 22 years.

Litter League

Despite the Trojan work the Tidy Towns volunteers do sweeping the streets three times a week Saturday morning, Sunday morning and Wednesday night the news of the Litter league results were greeted with consternation. The Tidy Towns committee cannot be blamed for this it is the litterlouts on Sunday night can take full blame for the poor results; cigarette butts and small litter were the main offending items. The village was never cleaner than it is this year. Some 50 staff members of Pepsi Cola did a litter blitz and worked at cleaning and enhancing the town centre for a full morning earlier in May. Volunteers meet every Wednesday evening at 7.00pm they would welcome more people to help out. Carrigaline got 5th place in their category in week 1 with 917.5 marks and joint 7th place in week 2 with 887 marks: this was judged on Monday 17th June.

Douglas Pay Parking €450,000 In The Red Independent councillor David Boyle has obtained figures that show that the Douglas pay parking regime has lost €450,000 after the first year of operation. Douglas pay parking has been in operation for a year and was implemented at a cost of €370,000 to the tax payer. This included the cost of upgrading the long term car par in the Woollen mills, security monitoring and the cost of the on street parking machines. The total cost of the pay parking regime was €293,479 for the first year. This includes the cost of leasing the car park in the Woollen Mills and the contract with private company tasked with managing the on street parking regime. The income was approx €210,000 which means that pay parking lost over €80,000. If you include the Initial start up cost of €370,000, this means that pay parking so far after one year of operation has lost over €450,000. It has also come to light that over 3,580 tickets were issued in the first year of operation. Cllr Boyle says, “From recent figures that I have obtained it is clear to me that pay parking is failing. There are approx 7,400 households in Douglas which means that there has been a ticket handed out for nearly every second house in Douglas. This is a truly astonishing amount of ticketing. I am sure that anyone who gets a parking ticket in Douglas complains to a least five friends and family members. This further compounds the image problem making Douglas a less desirable place to come and spend money. With over 3,580 tickets handed out the damage to Douglas is clear”. Cllr Boyle continues,”I believe that pay parking has failed at every level. It has damaged the image of Douglas as a place to do business. It has failed economically. It has failed the tax payer. It has failed from a policy point of view with Douglas the only town in the ward with full pay parking. It has been a total disaster for Douglas. Damage limitation for the businesses of Douglas needs to be the priority. Cork County Council needs to recognise that it needs to prioritise the welfare of these businesses. Cork County Council has a duty of care to them and I believe that it has failed with this pay parking regime”.

southlink Masquerade Ball for Autism

Hi all, Jon and Karen here we decided to post up the info and the list of equipment we hope to buy out of the money raised by Masquerade Ball Cork this year with all our fundraising events and finishing with our ball on the 5th of October. Our aim this year was €10,000.00 or over to support children and their families with autism at the “South-Lee Services Marian House”. We received an, OT wishlist and have given ye an idea of how much the equipment is costing. Vat will be included in the final bill given to us at the end for the final order to go in. The swings will have to appropriately and safely supported and are specific for ceiling installation into the beams and certified by and engineer so different swings and bars can be hooked on and off when needed allowing space to work with other equipment. The padded soft play area and the ball pool area will have thick padding on the walls and floor so it will cope with all ages and last long term and also keeping the children safe. We hope this answers as to where and what the money will go toward. Jon and I are personally overseeing and dealing with the ordering and paying for the equipment as well as organising the delivery and installation of everything to Marian house. We are confident that in some way this will help in a big way the Occupational therapists, Speech and language therapists, Psychologists, Social workers, Home support workers and early intervention teachers to work with the overwhelming demands on them and large numbers of children and families needing their help. Not forgetting the help they give with schools and units and also helping parents to learn at courses like Earlybird programme, láimh, Hanen talkablility to name a few as well as workshops and talks and information nights at places like Marian house, Haysleigh house, Deerpark ect…. As parents of a child with ASD we hope this helps in some way to give those of you who know little or nothing about the services and how important the equipment will be for them to help all our children on the spectrum ranging ages 3-18. Thank you and please support any of our upcoming events aswell as our ball and know that you are helping so many children and their families From the hardworking and devoted group at Masquerade Ball Cork. Buttimer welcomes replacement of bus shelters in Douglas and Rochestown Cork South Central Fine Gael TD, Jerry Buttimer has today (Friday) welcomed the replacement of bus shelters in Douglas and Rochestown. Deputy Buttimer was commenting after the National Transport Authority approved the replacement of 10 bus shelters in Cork and 31 nationally.“The National Transport Authority has today (Friday) approved funding to replace ten bus shelters in Cork. Following a request from Bus Éireann it is expected that these shelters will be replaced during the course of this year. I am very pleased that one third of the total national approvals are to be in Cork. “In the Douglas and Rochestown areas the bus shelters being replaced are at Monswood, The Borough, Lansboro and at Endsleigh on Douglas Road. These will greatly benefit all those local residents who rely on bus services both to and from work and when going to the city. “If public transport is going to be a viable alternative to private cars then we must make it as easy as possible for people to use. This requires buses running on time, information being readily available to passengers and proper facilities for people who travel by bus. These new bus shelters will improve the facilities available and provide increased protection against inclement weather while people are waiting for busses. “The Minister for Transport has previously approved the roll out of real time passenger information on certain bus routes. This live information has greatly improved the experience for many bus users, they can now wait on a bus knowing approximately when it will arrive. “We must continually invest in public transport to make it a viable alternative. I hope that these new bus shelters will be just one part of Minister’s on-going commitment to improve bus services across Cork.”

Graves’ disease Graves’ disease is the most common form of hyperthyroidism, occurring when your immune system mistakenly attacks your thyroid gland and causes it to overproduce the hormone thyroxine. This higher thyroxine level can greatly increase your body’s metabolic rate, which may affect you in numerous ways, from your moods to your physical appearance. Symptoms Graves’ disease symptoms may include: Anxiety, Irritability, Difficulty sleeping, Fatigue, A rapid or irregular heartbeat, A fine tremor of your hands or fingers, An increase in perspiration, Sensitivity to heat, Weight loss, despite normal food intake, Brittle hair, Enlargement of your thyroid gland (goiter), Change in menstrual cycles and Frequent bowel movements. Causes Doctors don’t know what causes Graves’ disease. Normally, your immune system uses naturally occurring proteins (antibodies) and white blood cells (lymphocytes) to help eliminate viruses, bacteria and foreign substances (antigens) that invade your body. In Graves’ disease, your immune system mistakenly attacks your thyroid gland, but instead of destroying the gland, an antibody called thyrotropin receptor antibody (TRAb) stimulates the thyroid to make excessive amounts of thyroid hormone. Tests and diagnosis To diagnose Graves’ disease, your doctor typically uses these procedures: • • •

Physical exam. Blood sample. Radioactive iodine uptake.

Coping and support If you have Graves’ disease, make your mental and physical well-being a priority. Eating well and exercising can enhance the improvement in some symptoms while being treated and help you feel better in general. For example, because your thyroid controls your metabolism, you may have a tendency to gain weight when the hyperthyroidism corrects. Brittle bones can also occur with Graves’ disease and weight-bearing exercises can help maintain bone density.

Wear and tear” of the spine explained Have you had an MRI recently only to be told by your G.P. you have “wear and tear” of the spine and “bulging discs?” If so, you are not alone as this is a very common occurrence. “Wear and Tear” of the spine affects the bone, discs, joints and ligaments and in the medical world is called Spondylosis. In everyday language, it is a form of Arthritis. Contrary to common belief, it is not necessarily associated with old age. “Wear and tear” can arise amongst those who do heavy manual work, play contact sports, do repetitive daily activities for hours on end, and even those who lead a sedentary life style. It can be seen on an MRI in those as young as teenagers and so back pain should not be ignored. It would seem too, that genetic factors play a role in “wear and tear” and so if you remember your parents complaining of back pain, then there is a possibility that you may inherit familial patterns. “Wear and Tear” is also common in the neck and is not confined to the low back area. All of us will have “wear and tear” as it is part of the aging process, however not all of us will suffer from pain. What causes the pain? As “wear and tear,” or “degeneration” as it is also commonly known sets in, swelling on the bone adjacent to the discs, and also on the hinge joints at the back of the spine (Facet joints) occurs which can put pressure on the spinal canal and verve roots. The bony swellings are called “osteophytes” and are little bony nodules. As “degeneration” develops, the disc itself looses height and as such, the individual vertebrae move closer together. This again gives rise to nerve root symptoms such as Sciatica and caused “bulging discs”. Ligaments in the spine can thicken and calcify too and give rise to what is called Spinal Stenosis. Symptoms here are felt when walking or standing upright and are typically relieved by bending forward or sitting. Patients find they can often ride a bike for kilometres without any pain, but can only walk a few hundred metres. It is entirely possible to have a mixture of these conditions, such as a “bulging discs” and “wear and tear”; or “wear and tear” and myelopathy (compression of the spinal cord).

Things to do this week: As usual we try to give you a few ideas on what might need doing in your garden this week. Not everything in this article may apply to your garden - but there might be something, if not this week maybe next week.

Flower Garden Start thinking about ordering spring-flowering bulbs. Lift tulips once foliage has died down, and dry off the bulbs. Sow hardy annuals for autumn colour, in a nursery bed or cold frame. Start taking semi-ripe cuttings of shrubs and root in a cold frame. Watch out for black spot and mildew on roses, and spray promptly with fungicide. Start feeding hanging baskets and other containers 6 weeks after planting.

Kitchen Garden Sow oriental brassicas direct or in a nursery bed. Make a last sowing of a small early carrot variety. Summer prune cherries and plums. Prop up laden plum branches to prevent breakage. Cut dill, fennel and coriander seed heads as they turn colour, and hang up in paper bags to dry.

Lawns & Hedges

If the weather turns hot and dry remove the grass box from mowers and raise the height of the cut slightly.

Greenhouse Pinch out the growing tips of tomatoes in pots and growing bags after four trusses. In hot weather leave the greenhouse doors open, but net against birds if there are fruits ripening inside. Pot up freesias for indoor flowers in winter, and stand pots outdoors until October. Sow more basil if earlier plants look like flowering.

Water Garden Aerate ponds with a hosepipe if fish are seen gasping at the surface

In General Mulch wall plants and others in very dry positions, after rain or a good watering after summer showers / storms, check for scorched shoots, signs of fireblight, on Rosaceae shrubs such as pears, pyracantha and cotoneaster.

Wills and when a will can be challenged

Thursday 27.06.2013

issue #925- 926

Taking a dog to France on holiday

In this my final article in my series on Wills I am looking at the main grounds for challenging a will. They are as follows:Succession Act requirements: The Act sets out a number of formalities for the making and signing of a will. For example the will has to be signed by the person making the will in the presence of two independent witnesses. If these are not met the will can be challenged. Capacity: Did the person who is making the will have full mental capacity to sign the will or were they suffering from any illness or condition which meant they were not “of sound disposing mind”? If the person who has made the will is deemed not to have been of sound disposing mind at the time of making the will then the will can be challenged. Contents of Will: Did the person making the will approve of it’s contents? If not the will can be challenged. Undue Influence: Was there any duress or undue influence? The person making their will should be free to dispose of their assets as they wish. They should not be under pressure from any third party to dispose of any asset in any particular way. A Will may be challenged if there is a suspicion of duress or undue influence. Children: There is no automatic right for a child to benefit under their parent’s estate but they do have a right to apply to Court for provision out of their parent’s estate. They will succeed if they can prove that their parent failed in their moral duty to make proper provision for them in accordance with their means whether by will or otherwise. Children have 6 months from the date of the Grant of Probate to take an action to the Court. Spouse: Spouses/Civil Partners/Co-Habitants: Can all bring an applicati on to Court for provision to be made for them. This is knows as the “legal right share”. If there are no children the entitlement is one half. With children the entitlement is one third. Fraud: If the execution of the will was obtained by fraud the will may be challenged. It is important to obtain proper legal and tax advice in relation to your estate planning. However it is very important to have a valid will in place for the reasons I have outlined in this and my previous Articles. In my next Article I am going to focus on the first time buyer and the issues he or she needs to be aware of when buying their first property.

My husband and I are going to France in our caravan this summer for three weeks and want to take our dog with us on holidays. Will I need any special documentation to get him into France and back into Ireland on our return? Since 1 January 2012, every pet (dog, cat or ferret) that travels between EU Member States must have an EU Pet Passport. The Passport system is designed to protect citizens from the threat of rabies and certain other diseases. The Pet Passport is issued by a private veterinarian directly to you. To travel throughout Europe, including France, your pet requires a Pet Passport detailing: • •

Its microchip number Its rabies vaccination, which must be administered at least 21 days before travel (make sure your dog is microchipped first or the vaccination is invalid)

Contact your vet some weeks before you travel, so that you can make the necessary appointments. Planning in advance will ensure you have enough time for your pet to get microchipped and vaccinated. When you get the Pet Passport from your vet, check that all entries are legible and correct, as any errors could lead to your pet being detained. Note that before re-entry into Ireland, dogs must be treated for tapeworm not more than 120 hours (5 days) and not less than 24 hours (1 day) before they arrive in Ireland. Treatment must be administered by a vet and the details entered into the Pet Passport. Treatment for ticks is not compulsory but it is advisable to get it at the same time as the tapeworm treatment. Boxing clever? Two boys were having a boxing match in the school hall. One of the boys was swinging punches like fury but not landing any. At the end of the round he asked the games master how he was doing.`Not very well,’ said the games master. `But carry on with what you’re doing he might catch a cold from the draughts!’
