Titanic Wreath Laying Comemoration I made a brief return to my navy roots last Sunday morning as I boarded LE Eithne at Cobh for (take out brief) the voyage out of Cork Harbour to the position where Titanic anchored on April 11th 1912. The reason for this short voyage was for a wreath laying ceremony on the anniversary of the liner’s sinking, three and a half days after leaving Irish waters and the sight of ‘Roches Point’ at the mouth of Cork harbour. The invited guests included local dignitaries together with members of the Irish Titanic Historical Society and indeed decendants of some of the passengers of the ill-fated ship. It was a sombre occasion as I noticed many people individually reflect as they watched the wreaths drift on the current after being placed in the sea. While the formal ceremony took place on LE Eithne’s flight deck, I couldn’t help notice that the children who had come aboard for this short trip, were playing in one of the ship’s Seariders (RIB - rigid inflatable boat), blissfully unaware of the occasion being marked and I wondered at that point, if the children aboard Titanic were aware of the crisis around them, as she sank beneath the Atlantic. On a personal note, it was good to catch up with my navy colleagues Cdr. Steve Walsh, captain of LE Eithne, Petty Officer Tom Kennedy and cox’n, Senior Chief Robbie Byrne ,while it was a novelty to sail once more on the ship I was very much involved with as a photographer, from its humble beginnings with the laying of her keel at Verolme dockyard to her launch and fit out, the first helicopter landing aboard, her sea trials and commissioning.
St. Mary’s School Rochestown Many schools locally, were involved in Titanic projects during 100 year anniversary period and St. Mary’s School Rochestown recently commemorated the anniversary of the Titanic’s brief visit to Cork and her sinking in 1912. All classes worked on different areas of the project from the building of the Titanic to the crew and passengers who embarked in Queenstown. Students and staff were delighted to welcome Chief Petty Officer Owen O’Keefe of the Naval Service, who came to look at the exhibition and talk to students about water safety while Principal Mary Conroy presented CPO O’Keefe with a message in a bottle, to mark the occasion.

Policing – lift the recruitment embargo! While the embargo on recruitment has been lifted for the army and navy, the same can’t be said for the Gardaí who have lost 2,000 members over the past number of years due to retirement etc. This has put undue pressure on Garda resources leading to low moral within the force as it loses vital experience. This experience needs to be replaced in order to maintain a high level of law and order at a time when criminality is becoming more sophisticated. We need a police force that is capable of tackling and preventing today’s crime – lift the embargo!
Slán George Thompson Editor
• Garda resources are under pressure with the loss of 2000 members in recent years due to retirement and personnel leaving the force. Garda unions are calling on the government to lift the embargo on recruiting to maintain a high standard of policing.

Poetry Corner with Ronnie McGinn
This month, Cobh, (formerly Queenstown), is in the middle of memorial services and ceremonies for the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic. This tragic event has captured minds and hearts the world over for many reasons, not least of which is the human level. Marion Horgan has written a commemorative poem in memory of the occasion.
The Titanic You sailed away on that fateful day, Departing Queenstown in the cove of Cork. A voyage bound for a world of dreams and new beginnings in New York Alas the dreams weren’t meant to be, For those who perished in that cruel sea. Lives were quenched just like a light, In icy waters on that tragic night. Your maiden voyage was to be your last, And ghosts still whisper of your tragic past. Many wept on a distant shore, Mourning loved ones they would see no more. Marvel of the White Star line, A revolution in design, Alas, your reign was all too brief, And now your grave is dark and deep. One hundred years have come and gone, And still the memories linger on, From weft and weave of history, Your legend lives eternally. Marion Rose Horgan Send your poem to ‘The Poetry Corner’ / Douglas Post, Morris House, Douglas or you can email it direct to ronniemcginn@ eircom.net. If possible keep your poem to 20 lines. You may choose any subject you like, in any form you like as long as it’s original. We look forward to hearing from you. RonnieMcGinn

Anti-Bullying Forum An Anti-Bullying Forum to tackle bullying in schools is due to take place on the 17th of May 2012 at the Clock Tower conference room, in the Department of Education and Skills. The Forum will bring together a range of experts, support groups and representatives of the schools sector including parents and students. The Forum will consider what changes to existing practices and policies in schools may be needed in order to effectively tackle bullying. It will identify practical steps and recommendations that could be taken in the short term to improve how schools approach and tackle bullying. Announcing the event Minister for Education Ruairi Quinn TD said, “Bullying in school can ruin a young person’s enjoyment of some of the most important years of their life. In extreme situations it can also, tragically, lead to a young person taking their own life. It is a problem I take very seriously and I hope that the Forum will provide an opportunity to set out a roadmap on how best to tackle all forms of bullying in our schools.” Welcoming the announcement Ciarán Lynch TD said, “A key element in dealing with this problem is the ongoing development of a school culture of awareness of the seriousness of the issue and having in place a whole school approach to dealing with it.”

Letter of Recommendation Ref: Mr. Michael O’HanIon - Cork Cleaning Services
To Whom it May Concern: This is a personal recommendation for Mr. Michael O’Hanlon and his new business venture. Recently Michael undertook a job to clean the large cobbled area outside the main Conference Centre Area of the Hotel. As you can imagine this area sees a huge amount of footfall on an annual basis and the cobbles had in effect seen better days. To his credit, the job was undertaken in an extremely diligent and timely manner. Due care and attention to detail was the order of the day thus ensuring a high standard of craft and workmanship. The end result was incredible, absolutely pristine and totally surpassed my expectations. l was extremely happy with Michael’s work ethic and would highly recommend him to others. Yours Sincerely, Shay Livingstone General Manager Rochestown Park Hotel

Seen, Read + Heard by Michael O’Hanlon Well, it’s been a long break, but it’s good to be back. The last time I wrote my piece, the Leader (I use that term loosely!) Brian Cowen was telling us about “green shoots springing up”, the financial Regulator Pat Neary telling us telling us that the banks were solvent and remember John Gormley? 13 advisors, one to tell him those candles were cheaper than light bulbs - 13 advisors costing almost one million a year!! Remember pre Celtic Fas when there were quite a lot of unemployed people, annual spend by Fas one billion Euro; then at the height of the Celtic Tiger with virtually full employment, annual bill? One billion Euro. Well, let’s start with Brian Cowen, he left with a wheelie bin full of money and a pension of €153,000, Pat Neary got a Golden handshake of €600,000 and a pension of €1243,000 and Roddy Molloy of Fas got almost €1,000,000 and the company car. Incidentally did they ever find the Fas competition prize car? It’s Sunday night and I just watched “The Week in Politics” and writing this I’ve just realized that I have a very serious problem which I need to share with you. You know those meetings where people to sit in a circle and stand up whey they’re called, well I’m going to form one such meeting. When I’m called, I’ll stand up and say “My name is Michael, I’m a masochist. I watch “The week in Politics”, “Tonight with Vincent Browne”, “Prime Time” and any mention of the word NAMA has me moaning in pain. God the Agony is exquisite!! The next poor soul began “My name is Dennis and Michael Lowry turns me on” I made an excuse and left!!
but that was not the case. Anyway Phil wanted a septic 50 from the rural folks, they said “Go away”, or in the Irish format, two words, the first word begins with f and the second word ends with f, so Phil says “How about a compromise, a €5?” At a later stage the Department head had reached the letter H in the Golden Pages, “That’s it” said Phil, “Household Charge, that’ll raise over one hundred million”. We know from a whistleblower in the Department of Finance that unsecured Bond Holder, gambler Roman Abramovich had been onto Enda looking for about one hundred million to replace the entire Chelsea team and Manager. So now the first battle Phil lost; the second a draw. Now comes the ultimate battle, this could be Phil’s Water-loo!! Finally, some good news, together with my friend Tommy Maher, we have launched the Cork Cleaning Services. Check out the advert in this week’s Edition. Its springtime – time to freshen up your driveway, patio, decking, walls etc. Give us a call for a free quotation. It’s good to be back and hopefully I’ll meet you all on my travels with notebook and my camera. See you next week if the Good Lord’s willing and the creeks don’t rise. Michael O’Hanlon.
On a serious note, whey do we persist in electing a total of 19 Ministers and Ministers of State who collectively have never created a job in their lives? I rang the CSO last year seeking some info on how many self-employed people there were in Ireland. He e-mailed the number – 323,000, almost a third of a mullion. If only 166 of them were running the country, we would have full employment because they create jobs and they know the value of a shilling!! I’m convince that every Monday morning our Ministers go into the Offices of the Department Heads, armed only with a Golden Pages ‘phone book, throw it on the table and say “Alright Paidin, it’s cutting day, you better start on B, skip A, auctioneers, artists and architects are f….d!!! I was glad to read that Phil Hogan found Jesus last week in Carlow. He was in town that day to speak, when he heard roaring and screaming, one of his advisers thought that Jedward were in town. Then Phil noticed there was nobody under 20 in the crowd. Somebody heard a loud voice say “Jesus”, and Phil ran into a Church to seek sanctuary, and hopefully redemption,

‘Dare to Reveal’ Psoriasis Sufferers take to the catwalk Douglas’s Philip Kelly to model at fashion show fundraiser A different side of psoriasis sufferer Philip Kelly will be seen when he models at the Psoriasis Association of Ireland’s ‘Dare to Reveal’ fashion show fundraiser at Cork International Airport hotel on Thursday, May 3rd next. Philip from Douglas, is Events’ Manager at the hotel but decided to participate in the ’Show along with other men and women, all of whom have the skin disease. Proceeds from the show will go towards establishing psoriasis support groups in Cork city and county and nationwide. Mahon Point Shopping Centre is providing clothes for the models and Clarins are doing make-up. Style advisor Dee Kelly Morgan is MC on the night. Tickets are €20 each and are available from organisers Theresa Tierney-Bugler on 087-2210339 and Lisa O’Connor 086-8497485. Tickets will also be available from the Fashion Show Stand in Mahon Point shopping centre on Thursday 26th and Saturday 28th April.
“We are delighted and very grateful for the support from all our sponsors without whom this very important event could not take place. We are all looking forward to a very successful and enjoyable evening and hoping it will be very well attended,” says Theresa from Carrigaline who will be modelling on the night. Psoriasis is a non-contagious, incurable chronic inflammatory skin disease that can appear anywhere on the body, the most common areas being the scalp, elbows and knees. “You can get very down about it, you become very self-conscious and it does impact on your self-esteem. If I am going on a night out I am very concerned about the clothing I wear, and I always try to ensure I am wearing something that covers my psoriasis,” says Theresa. Caroline Irwin, Chairperson, Psoriasis Association of Ireland says: “The condition is often misunderstood and people don’t realise there are varying types of psoriasis from mild to severe. Many people suffer physically and psychologically with the condition.

Other people do not seek medical treatment but suffer in silence. Many don’t realise there are treatments available that can bring relief and clearance.” She said creating more support groups
would provide a platform for people to discuss their individual psoriasis and to learn about new treatments. For more details visit psoriasisireland. ie or psoriasisireland face book page or mahonpointsc.ie

Allergies Allergies occur when your immune system reacts to a foreign substance such as pollen, bee venom or pet dander. Your immune system produces substances known as antibodies. Some of these antibodies protect you from unwanted invaders that could make you sick or cause an infection. When you have allergies, your immune system makes antibodies that identify your particular allergen as something harmful, even though it isn’t. When you come into contact with the allergen, your immune system’s reaction inflames your skin, sinuses, airways or digestive system.
How do I handle mum’s Alzheimer’s?
Symptoms Allergy symptoms depend on your particular allergy, and can involve the airways, sinuses and nasal passages, skin, and digestive system. Allergic reactions can range from mild to severe. In some severe cases, allergies can trigger a life-threatening reaction in your body known as anaphylaxis.
When you’re exposed to the allergen again in the future, these antibodies release a number of immune system chemicals, such as histamine, that cause allergy symptoms.
Treatment Allergy treatments include: • Allergen avoidance. • Medications to reduce symptoms. • Immunotherapy. • Emergency epinephrine.
Causes
Lifestyle remedies
An allergy starts when the immune system mistakes a normally harmless substance for a dangerous invader. The immune system then produces antibodies that are always on the alert for your particular allergen.
Some allergy symptoms improve with home treatment. Sinus congestion and hay fever symptoms often improve with nasal lavage — rinsing out the sinuses with a saline solution.
Diabetes, what do I do now?
We can help you with any health
Household airborne allergy symptoms, such as those caused by dust mites or pet dander, may improve by taking steps to reduce your exposure to allergens. Steps include frequently washing bedding and stuffed toys in hot water, maintaining low humidity, regularly using a vacuum with a fine filter such as a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter, and replacing carpeting with hard flooring. Mold allergy symptoms may be alleviated by avoiding outdoor work in damp weather, wearing a dust mask while working outdoors, and keeping your windows closed at night. Young @ Heart by Phil Goodman
The Bealtaine festival takes place from 1st to 31st May celebrating creativity in older age. Bealtaine showcases the talents of older people, a chance for people to discover a new talent also a chance for a long lost skill to find a new outlet,as his year is European year for active aging and Solidarity between generations it gives a chance to communicate traditions between the generations, pushing personal boundaries, gaining new knowledge, feeling new experiences, taking up a hobby like Painting etc. Introducing painting classes to our members has opened up a new meaning to painting a picture, the involvement in the process of painting increases one’s awareness each time you look out at the sky, you see things you never before enjoyed or experienced. There is so much learning in looking around you, we are very lucky to have such a fine artist in Peg O’Brien who each week encourages her class to look at their work with confidence. We hope to display their Paintings during Bealtaine. The knitting group had on display their beautiful work, scarves, Dolls, jumpers, tea cosies and much more. One of the most popular items to sell was a knitted stuffed memento in the Douglas colours which you can hang in your car, if anyone is interested in having one let me know , Well done to Billy Mc Carthy who gave an outstanding performance in the City Hall in the ‘Over 60s’, even though Billy did not make the final this time he enjoyed the experience and all the supporters especially his grandchildren who were waving the Douglas flag in his honour they can be very proud of their Grand-dad, the best of luck to all the contestants in the final on May 27th ,if you need tickets contact me.

€110,000 in funding for Cork City & County will help tackle litter and graffiti Fine Gael TD for Cork South Central, Jerry Buttimer, has welcomed funding totalling €110,000 for Cork City and County to help tackle the problem of litter and graffiti. The funding has been announced by the Minister for Environment, Phil Hogan, as part of the provision of more than €2 million in grants to local authorities nationwide. “Maintaining the appearance of towns and villages across Cork is not only important for the morale of people living in local communities; it is a key factor in driving economic growth and boosting tourism figures. The funding being provided by Minister Hogan will help local authorities to tackle littering through awareness raising, enforcement and the maintenance of tourist areas. “A total of €70,000 has been allocated to Cork under the AntiLitter and Anti-Graffiti Awareness Scheme. Using this money, local authorities will be able to select projects that promote greater public awareness and education in relation to litter and graffiti. This includes supporting voluntary initiatives run by community groups, which play such a vital role in the upkeep of our towns and villages. “In a bid to ensure that locations that are popular with tourists are kept clean, €40,000 is being provided to Cork under the Tourist Season AntiLitter Grant. This will help with the maintenance of visitor locations such as beaches, scenic areas and approach roads to access points like airports and ferry ports. Litter can leave a very poor and lasting impression on visitors, so we must do all we can to ensure popular locations are kept in top shape. “A further €750,000 is being made available nationally under the new Litter Enforcement Scheme, to help crack down on littering and illegal dumping. This money can be used by local authorities to deploy mobile CCTV cameras and other measures to identify those responsible for these activities. “We all have a role to play in the upkeep of our own communities. Local authorities, community and voluntary groups all do excellent work to maintain the appearance of streets, roads and scenic areas; this funding from Minister Hogan will help to support them in this work.”
Home & G ard e n Things to do This Week Are we in “Gardeners Heaven”? What more could a gardener ask for at this time of year? The weather is improving and everything’s growing. Happy days are here again! Before you start, ask yourself what kind of a garden you would like to be looking out at? Once you’ve decided the rest plain sailing. One could even win the gardening Competition.
Could this be a winner in the Gardening Competition?
We’ll try to give you a few ideas on what might need doing in your garden this week. Not everything in this article may apply to your garden - but there might be something, if not this week maybe next week.
Flower Garden
Greenhouse
Continue sowing hardy annuals wherever there is a need for colour; Sow extra in spare ground for cutting. Mulch lilies outdoors with compost, and feed those growing in pots. Watch out for black fly on philadelphus, elders and other shrubs, and spray.
Remove greenhouse insulation; apply a light speckle of shading to the glass. Start feeding early tomatoes, and continue removing sideshoots. Sow runner and climbing French beans in pots for planting out in 3-4 weeks time. Sow surplus half-hardy annuals for greenhouse pot-plants. Continue pricking out bedding , and move older seedlings to the cold frame to harden off. Keep newspapers handy in case of sudden night frosts. Plant tomatoes in unheated greenhouse if not already done.
Kitchen Garden Tuck straw or special mats around strawberry plants to keep the fruit clean; do this before plants begin to sprawl. Remove grease bands from fruit trees and burn. Cut asparagus spears regularly, but not from new plants. Remove flowers from perpetual strawberries for heavier crops later in the year. Sow kohlrabi little and often, and every 3-4 weeks for young tender crops. Support peas before they make their first tendrils. Erect supports for runner and climbing French beans. Thin out autumn raspberry canes to 10cm(4in) apart, and tie in as they grow.
Lawns & Hedges Continue mowing, twice weekly, for a fine finish if the grass is growing vigorously.
Water Garden Watch out for pondweed starting to multiply in a warm season.
In General In dry weather spray new conifers and evergreens with water or an anti-desiccant. Keep all new shrubs, trees and fruit well-watered in a dry season, and remove weeds to reduce competition. Treat fence panels and supports with timber preservative. When spraying fruit and other plants in flower, do so in the evening when pollinating insects are not about.
Garden Competition Our Summer Gardening Competition, is not that far away and will be open to all our readers. You can win a prize every week from May to September. So get out the hoe and start now for a stunning summer garden. If your garden or any part of your garden is blooming, or just looking good, why not lets us have a photo. We would love to print it. If you have a neighbor with a nice garden who might be a bit shy, why not take a photo for them. Send your photo to Gardening, Douglas Post, Morris House, Douglas. Cork. Celebrity chef Neven Maguire coming to Cork Culinary enthusiasts in Cork will have the chance to see renowned Irish chef Neven Maguire at the Rochestown Park Hotel on Wednesday 25th April 2012. The County Cavan chef has become a favourite with the public over the past fifteen years following a number of successful television series. Neven is a keen advocate of local producers and the public will have a chance to view some of these at his Cork demonstration in a few weeks time. His visit coincides with a photocall at Coláiste Chríost Rí secondary school in Turner’s Cross where he will cut the tape on a new and exciting horticulture project for which he will become a patron. From a very young age, one of Neven’s favourite pastimes was to shadow his mother in the kitchen and watching her cook. His pastime soon became his passion as he began experimenting with ingredients in the home kitchen at the tender age of 10. This intensified as Neven went through his teenage years. No one was surprised in 1992 when Neven enrolled in Fermanagh College, Enniskillen to study catering, where
he received the prestigious Student of the Year Award. Even then, his vision was clear - to share his love and passion for food with as many people as possible. Neven trained in some of the highest profile restaurants in the world including Roscoff in Belfast (Michelin Star winner), Grand Hotel in Berlin (Michelin Star winner), The Lea Linster in Luxembourg (where he cooked for Lady Diana and Tony Blair) and Arzak in San Sebastian. In 2001 Neven took over the family business and transformed a local restaurant into a national phenomenon. Located in the rural village of Blacklion in Co. Cavan, MacNean House and Restaurant has become one of the most talked about and frequented restaurants in the country. At the core of Neven’s philosophy is a dedication to using only the finest local seasonal ingredients. As part of this commitment Neven works closely with An Bord Bia to promote Quality Assured Irish produce. Tickets for Neven Maguire’s demonstration are available now from Coláiste Chríost Rí (021-4274904 or 086-2323940).

In The Loop with Peter Bowles D.J.
The weekend is very busy with gigs but one worth checking out is definitely Mick Flannery at the Opera House this Sunday at 8pm. Mick Flannery will be celebrating this weekend as he has knocked Madonna off the #1 spot in the album charts! Mick, who works as a stonemason when not writing and performing, was finishing a fireplace when he got the call. He left the fireplace undone and immediately went to the pub to celebrate his victory! Mick’s album Red To Blue was released last week. Indiependence festival have announced an initial line-up. Feeder, Jape, Delorentos, The Frank & Walters and The Japanese Popstars are among the first wave of acts revealed to be playing at the Indiependence festival in Mitchelstown this summer. The festival takes place from 3rd to 5th August and tickets will cost €79 for three day non-camping or €99 for three days camping. Many more acts are expected to be announced in the coming weeks, but the announcement of Choice Prize winners Jape, as well as Delorentos and The Japanese Popstars will no doubt delight Irish music fans looking for a cheap and cheerful festival experience in early August. He makes every member of the audience feel a part of the show. On Saturday, 28th April Aonghus McAnally will host the Gala Magic Show which will include some of the top magical entertainers from the U.S., U.K. and Europe. The parish clerk of a West Cork town received a small parcel from Germany addressed to Mr. Alfred White, she checked the telephone directory but could find no one listed under that name. However, when she inquired at the local pub she was told by some of the town’s old timers that there had been an Alfred White and that after World War 2 , he had married a German and settled in Frankfurt. What was in the parcel ?
Last Week’s Teazers. “A hiker came to a fork in the road and does not know the way to go to his destination. There are two men at the fork, one of whom always tells the truth while the other always tells lies. The hiker does not know which is which, though; he may ask one of the men only one question to find his way. Which man does he ask and what is the question?
Last Week’s Answer. Either man should be asked the following question: ‘If I were to ask you if this is the way to go, would you say yes?’ While asking, the hiker should be pointing at either of the directions going from the fork. Its not difficult to figure out that the answer would be no from both men if it’s the wrong direction, and yes if it’s the right direction.

Douglas Hall FC Umbro U-14 Division Five Youghal Utd. 0; Douglas Hall A 3
The visitors were in control from the start and took the lead mid-way through the first- half through Padraig Hickey. Hickey was again on target early in the second before Alan Manning completed the scoring shortly afterwards. It was a fine team performance, there were notable displays from Declan Donovan, Colm Kennedy, Adam McAuliffe and Aaron Sheehan. Umbro U-15 Division One Leeside Knockraha 0; Douglas Hall 2
David Barry swiveled in the area midways through the first-half well to drive the low into the corner. Despite being reduced to ten early in the second-half following a second yellow card offence, Mark Crowley powered a header into the roof of the net as the Hall broke on the counter. Best for the visitors were Diarmuid O’Mahoney, Eoghan O’Leary and Aidan Cronin. Umbro U-15 Division Four Douglas Hall A 3; Mallow Utd. A 3
The Hall’s marvelous unbeaten run continued despite surrendering a twogoal lead to finish with a share of the points. After the visitors took a 25th minute lead, two goals inside a four minute spell by Cal Sheehy helped the home side to a 2-1 interval lead. Conor O’Leary set-up Ian Dorney for a third on 65 minutes, before United rallied with two late goals to earn a share of the spoils. Best for the Hall were O’Leary, Aaron Duggan, Sam Deane, Oliver O’Sullivan & Kevin Burke. Umbro U-15 Division Four Douglas Hall A 5; Blarney Utd. A 0
The Hall title push was revived following a sparkling win at Moneygourney on Sunday courtesy of goals from Conor O’Leary, Aaron Duggan, Kevin Burke, Cal Sheehy & Brian Stockle. Umbro U-16 Premier Avondale Utd. 2; Douglas Hall 0
An under strength Hall performed well in a lively contest at Beaumount Pk. Ben Collins, Ryan McCarthy, Peter McGivern, Stephen Cronin & stand-in keeper Brian Burke shone for
by Finbarr Buckley
the visitors. Umbro U-16 Division Three Douglas Hall A 2; Kinsale 4
In a thoroughly enjoyable tie, the visitors deservedly took all three points with Hall keeper Dara Murphy outstanding between the posts. Daly Industrial Supplies U-17 Division 1A Carrigaline Utd. 2; Douglas Hall 5
Ryan McCarthy netted a fine hat-trick in a comfortable win for the Hall at Ballea Road, with David O’Connor getting two further goals for the impressive visitors. Alex Finglas, Peter McGivern, Glenn Kenny, Paul Lehane & Scott O’Keeffe all shone despite the punishing schedule of five matches in thirteen days over the Easter period. Murphy Youth Cup Quarter-Final Ballincollig 4; Douglas Hall B 0
There was to be no fairy tale ending to this tie for the visitors, as there had been earlier in the season, as the host’s greater premier experience told in the end, despite a gutsy performance by the Hall were went one down at halftime before conceding two late goals at the Landing Field. Murphy’s Stout AUL 1 A Douglas Hall 1; Grangevale 1
Albert Clarke’s last minute headed goal from a Gavin Roche corner salvaged a point for the league leaders after Eric Maher had put Grangevale in front early in the second-half. Despite dominating the match territorially & being guilty of missing decent opportunities in front of goal, the Hall’s unbeaten run keeps them firmly in the driving seat as the season enters its conclusion.

G.A.A. FOCUS By Pat Harrington Snippets from the local and National Scene National League
The national league has been entertaining, competitive and hugely enjoyable. The crowds have come out in large numbers, e.g. Cork vs. Waterford 8,000; Cork vs. Tipperary 10,000; Cork vs. Kilkenny 8,000; Cork vs. Galway (H) Cork vs. Kerry 13,000. The latter two games were played as a double-header. National league games have not been drawing great crowds for a number of years. AS mentioned in a previous article Cor4k has competed well against all teams due in no small way to the recent introduction of new blood such as Darren Sweetnam and Conor Lehane along with the transformation of the centre of defence which sees Eoin Cadogan at centre back and McDonnell at full back. Paudie O’Sullivan has settled in at full forward and Patrick Cronin is the main man in the half forward line. These Cork forwards have displayed plenty of pace and skill. There are some areas where Cork need to show improvement. For instance Patrick Cronin is the only forward to win the high ball on a regular basis. One wonders if the Cork forwards are strong enough or have they got the physicality to mix it when the championship intensity kicks in come the month of June. Not wishing to over-dwell on the forwards, some defenders need to concentrate on closing down their opposite numbers. While they are striking the ball regularly out of defence they are still conceding too many scores. When the championship comes around it will be interesting to see if management will stick with the new kids on the block or will they recall some of the “elder lemons”. Cork now meet Tipperary in the league semi-final. I expect to see more intensity in this game than we experienced in the earlier league encounter when both teams displayed too much respect for each other and stood off a lot of the time. The Premier side were adept at picking out their colleagues with crisply struck 30/40
metre passes while Cork for their part did quite a lot of hand-passing. Yes, both are skilful teams. From childhood we recall the question, “Which came first, the chicken or the egg”? Now we ask which came first, the club or the intercounty structure. I have often said in the past that the club is treated as the second-class citizen in the matter of G.A.A. priorities. Management teams at intercounty level are very demanding and hold excess power over the players. At times they tend to put too much pressure on the younger lads; I refer here mainly to minor and under 21. Recently I was made aware of two similar yet contrasting incidents. A player who was ineligible for an impending intercounty game would not be released to play a game with his club as the club fixture was clashing with intercounty training. Yet the cork intercounty management has practically owned the player since the month of January. Case no.2:
Two under 21 players togged out with their club four days prior to a Munster football final, yet as I understand it panellists are not allowed to play with their clubs at this time. Does this mean that some players may play to their own rules, whilst others must dance to the intercounty manager’s tune? Just recently I met a former Cork player who stated that in his day the club called the shots whereas nowadays the intercounty manager owns all the rights to the player. I hear the clubs are complaining; perhaps they should come together in a meeting with the intercounty managers and demand more time with their players. Congratulations
Congratulations to Alan Cadogan on winning Munster under 21 Medal and Paul Fitzgerald and Jamie Davis for their part in defeating Limerick in the minor football championship.
More next week, Pat.
