ISSUE #1005 - 1006
Support our own People’s Candidates! asks Diarmaid Ó Cadhla. The main issue in the Local Elections is to ensure that our Council represents the people of Cork. None of the Political Parties represent us. Parties hide decision making from the people, they impose policy on us, they bargain with our entitlements - they are no more than Private Member Clubs - self-serving and lining their own pockets. But, it is the people who are entitled to be represented, not Political Parties, any campaign groups or other vested interests. Our money is used to finance the Parties, the monopoly controlled media constantly promotes them, they lie to us, their ‘whip’ is a denial of our rights. So far, eleven People’s Candidates have stepped forward for election in May, they have all signed THE PEOPLE’S CONTRACT and are committed to acting only according to mandate, on an issue by issue basis. Imagine being represented in this way? with it, we can begin to solve the problems we face. A packed meeting at the Metropole on Thursday 23rd heard calls for others to come forward, to contest the elections. Luke ‘Ming’ Flanagan TD asked people to commit themselves to representing their community and not any individual policy or Party ‘whip’. Dr. Liam Weeks of UCC, a specialist in politics, highlighted the possibilities of independent representation, he showed that Parties are not essential to democracy and gave examples where benefits have come without them. We must build this movement of the people - to ensure that we, the people, have the say in Local Government. Let this be the first step towards doing the same thing at the next Dáil elections. It is our duty to stand in defence of our own interests, to insist that we have proper representation!
We must have Representation of the People not Political Parties, Banks or any other vested interests

an enigma. Unfortunately his invaluable contribution was overlooked for years, he worked long unforgiving hours, his unwavering efforts and immense dedication is noteworthy.
AUTUMN IN PARIS TO CHRISTMAS IN ROME By Denis Coffey My extraordinary and emotional journey, this
story was a long time in the planning but we finally got there. Msgr. Hugh O ‘Flaherty embodies the Christian roots of Ireland; he had been a central figure in Rome his standing against Nazism gave tremendous heart and hope to thousands of Jews, the formidable and popular Irish Priest was an inspiring model, and played a significant disruptive role in Rome during the Nazi occupation his herculean bravery cannot be overstated particularly in the face of criticism from some of his close associates. After arriving in Paris my first stop the Irish College, there I met Santé Keel; my interviews with Santé have been of invaluable importance during the compiling of this fascinating 160 page manuscript. Santé had in her possession various testimonials touching and heartfelt letters regarding the Holocaust 1939 - 1945. Santé offered me and intriguing insight and helped in gathering material with enthusiasm and sincerity, her charming antidote to cynicism was to smile; utterly compassionate to my work she put forward suggestions and details verifying Msgr. O ‘Flaherty’s unique charisma, a man of boundless energy and consummate belief in his own ability. He was the primary architect of the great escape, unselfish; he was not one to turn the other cheek. It was understandable why his friends were rather baffled by him and regard him as
The Nazi’s came to power in 1933. In 1935 the Nuremberg laws deprived Jews of German citizenship. On May 22nd 1939, Hitler and Mussolini established the Rome - Berlin axis, after the diplomatic victories in 1938 Eastern European Jews came under Nazi control, systematically Jews were deported to concentration camps. Joseph Goebbels propaganda chief and William Joyce nickname “Lord Haw Haw”, they deliberately gave inaccurate information to the Red Cross saying the camps were tranquil and the people would be sent to new settlements in the near future. By now the Jewish people werebeen killed by mass shooting. A method Heinrich Himmler considered ineffective so the final solution became the gas chambers. In Rome Msgr. Hugh O ‘Flaherty assumed personal control of operations, his loyal colleagues were brilliant at decode and decoy, everyone had to live in a shroud of secrecy, it is said of Msgr. O ‘Flaherty’s compassion and heroism could not be equalled let alone exceeded, he made mission possible. It was now time to for us to leave Paris, I owe a great deal of gratitude to Santé Keel for her stories which were inspirational and heart-breaking and I have to say it left an indelible mark on myself and others. Arriving in Rome at Christmas time to attend mass in Christian Basilica which dates from the fourth century, it is always a privilege, the Pope’s own cathedral as Bishop of Rome. A visit to the graves of O’ Neill and O’ Donnell Teitheadh na Niarlai flight of the earls is historic and always gripping. Hugh O ‘Flaherty was born on the 20th of February 1898, his father a native of Galway, his mother a Native of Kiskeam Co. Cork. His father was a member of R.I.C he resigned in 1909 and got a job in Killarney Golf Club, Hugh had one sister Bride, two brothers Neil and Jim. Hugh a young student at Mungret College Limerick, it was at that time he set his mind on becoming

a priest, later on he was sponsored by the religious authorities to continue his studies in Rome; he was ordained on the 20th of December 1925 by Cardinal Van Russum and said his first mass the next day. Between 19401945 Monsignor Hugh O ‘Flaherty became very aware of the notorious Nazi exterminations camps at Triblinka, over 900,000 Jews were deliberately killed. In Rome the S.S under orders from Himmler and Gestapo Chief Keppler organized routine round ups of Jews, it was soul destroying for those arrested. Another ruthless special police force under Pietro Koch ordered the German army to put up posters warning anyone sheltering Jews or P.O.Wwould be shot, agents were everywhere, their uncharitable barbarism was uncompromising Rome had become a dangerous place for Msgr. Hugh O ‘Flaherty, he had come under scrutiny, his sanctuary in convents monasteries and the Vatican had now become of particular interest to the Gastapo, extra observation posts were set up around the clock, despite a sea of change in attitude towards the Monsignor he remained upbeat . The S.S and Gastapo accused him of sabotage, often under intense interrogation in response he would come up with fully convincing answers, his calm demeanour and tranquil approach gave him the edge, to the annoyance of his interrogators. Pietro Koch Gastapo Chief had his name on the list with others destined to be eliminated when the time was right. The persecution of the Jewish people increased. Msgr. O ‘Flaherty worked around the clock to provide extra adequate protection conspirators would denounce anyone. A very persistent man Msgr. O ‘Flaherty intensified the escape of the Jewish refugees. By the end of the World War 2 1945, and after Mussolini’s death over six thousand Jews and others had been helped to flee Rome and over two thousand people were still in sanctuaries and made their way to freedom. A number of people who survived subsequently converted to Catholicism. Monsignor Hugh O ‘Flaherty died on the 30th of October 1963 and was buried in the Daniel O Connell Memorial Church, Cahersiveen Co. Kerry Catheir Saidhbhin. We do well to remember Monsignor O‘Flaherty belongs not merely to Ireland but to humanity as a whole. Slan Donncha Beanncht De Agat

Poets are the pioneers and explorers in the world of feeling. Wherever you find yourself in that world, a poet may have been there before you. He or she will not have had your precise emotions nor experienced exactly your problem; but the shared experience will have had enough in common with yours for you to feel supported and reassured by what has been written. Our poem this week is a prime example and what makes it special is that it was written by a young girl to her mother at Christmas. Lauren O’Mahony is a member of the Douglas Junior Writers Group and a winner of the Maria Burke short story competition at Christmas. She will be reading one of her poems at The Lennox Robinson Literary Festival in Quigleys at The Douglas Village Shopping Centre on Sunday 2nd March.
Mum My mother is wonderful. My mother is kind and helpful And a whole lot of fun, But for spending time with me She’s no 1. She cleans my socks, she cleans my clothes, And she cleans under my bed But, most of all when I’m afraid She soothes my sleepy head. I love my mum I love my mum I really, really do! And if I am stuck taking them off! She helps me with my shoes. But that’s not all she does and I Could sit here naming things all day. My mother’s not just helpful. My mother’s not just kind She’s even better and in fact She’s all those things combined. I love you mum. Lauren O’Mahony (age 8)

Hand Me the Keys by Ellie Braun-Haley, Alberta, Canada My friend Carin was driving home from a few days in the mountains on assignment. It was 1982, and she was excited to see her family again. She came up behind an erratic driver, and wondered if he was falling asleep, suffering a heart attack, or drunk at the wheel. Then she saw him toss a beer bottle. She drove around him to safety, and put distance between the two cars. Then her conscience nagged, “I can’t just drive away, I need to get him off the road; someone might be killed!” She slowed to move back behind the drunk, never pausing to think about repercussions. As the drunk approached again and passed, her plan took root. She would pull up beside him, honk and motion for him to pull over. When she did that, however, he just looked confused and decelerated. After two repeats, he was driving at city street speeds, but she was no closer to stopping him. One more time... he slowed, and pulled over onto the shoulder. Then she watched in horror as he lost control of his car. The ditch was roomy with gentle slopes. A good driver could drive in and out easily. He skidded in -- and stopped. Was he hurt? Carin dashed down to his vehicle. He sat slumped. She rapped on the window, “Are

you all right?” He nodded yes and rolled down the window. “Give me your keys. I can’t allow you to drive,” she demanded. He stared, reached for his keys and handed them over. “You could cause an accident,” she said, “a death that would haunt you throughout your life.” “I’ve been up all night. I worked late, there was a farewell party... I needed to get home....” he replied, then wilted again. Carin took him to her car, drove his out of the ditch, suddenly realizing she had no further plans. What to do? Back up on the highway, inspiration struck. As if on schedule a car appeared on the horizon. With the stranger leaning against her car to steady himself, she entered the road. She waved her arms, and the car slowed to reveal four male passengers. “One of you must drive this man’s car to his home, as he’s too drunk to drive.” The passenger in the front nodded “yes”. Everyone else agreed. Carin returned to the drunk, told him of the arrangements, and assured him both he and his car would arrive home safely. He took her hand, smiled and said, “ Thank you for caring. No one has ever done something like this for me. I just...thank you.” To this day, more than twenty odd years later, Carin doesn’t remember what she said in response. None of us know what that driver thinks of this incident today. Yet I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that, in addition to perhaps saving his life that night, her one act of kindness made a lasting change in his life.
In Memoriam The date brings to mind the sudden death last year of our friend Kevin Gregan from Crosshaven. Kevin was the husband of our esteemed colleague Marie Piper Gregan in the Douglas Post. Kevin was a great supporter of Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital in Crumlin and the Ronald McDonald House where parents of sick children stay. In honour of his memory Marie renamed their summer fundraiser for Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital as “Kevin’s Day”. Kevin was a much loved husband, father and grandfather, a good family man, an excellent carpenter, loved sport, and he knew how to enjoy life. Everyone misses you Kevin, may you Rest in Peace.

Announcement of up to 500 jobs at Tyco shows Cork has regained its competitiveness Fine Gael Cork South Central TD, Jerry Buttimer, has today (Monday) said that the news that Tyco is establishing a business service centre in Cork with the potential creation of 500 jobs is a great boost for the city and proof that is has regained its competitiveness. Tyco is the world’s largest fire protection and security company. “The possible creation of 500 jobs at this new multinational facility is a fantastic boost for Cork, and further cements the city’s strong reputation for attracting foreign direct investment. Tyco is a huge international company with operations in 1,000 locations worldwide and $10 billion in annual revenues. It is very welcome back to the Cork business community, after it closed manufacturing facilities here in 2007 and 2008. “The company has stated that Ireland’s status as the host of support operation centres for numerous international firms played a significant role in its decision to locate here. It is also clear that the company believes Ireland has become much more competitive, as it cited a lack of competitiveness as one of the reasons for its withdrawal from the Irish market just six years ago. “Tyco representatives say they are keen to build a local talent pool to fill the new roles. I would encourage anyone interested in applying to do so without delay by visiting the company’s local career website at www.tycocareers-cork.com. “The creation of 500 new jobs in Cork will have a positive knock on effect for the local economy, with hundreds of spin off jobs likely to be created in support industries. The Tyco jobs will be created across a range of areas including sourcing and procurement, customer service, research and development, information technology, and finance. “This is yet another positive day on the jobs front for Cork. I would like to commend the Minister for Jobs, Richard Bruton TD, for his tireless work in encouraging international firms like Tyco to bring their operations to Ireland and create jobs here. I look forward to further positive announcements for Cork in the coming months.”

OBESITY
AND IT’S IMPACT ON HEALTH Obesity, and its impact on health, is rarely out of the headlines, especially at this time of year. According to a UCC survey, Ireland’s obesity crisis will be a full-blown epidemic by 2030, with 9 in every 10 adults either overweight or obese by that date. According to a survey Coronary Heart Disease and Stroke will increase by 97%, Cancers by 61% and Type 2 Diabetes by 21%. That is a frightening statistic, just changing what you eat and exercise can be a far more complex task than it soundstaking responsibility for our own health and lifestyle is very important. It is never too late to address it and improve your health. Regular exercise is crucial even if only a short walk. Doing something with a group is always better.

Tidy Towns Report from Peter Hertting
We hope everyone had a nice relaxing festive season and a good start into the New Year. Our volunteers also took a well deserved break and were back in action on Saturday (January 18th). We have many things planned for 2014 and therefore need more volunteers. We normally meet every Saturday morning to carry out clean-ups, painting, planting, etc. But volunteering with us doesn’t mean that you have to come out every Saturday/Sunday. Any Saturday/ Sunday morning in the year would be great. We are also urgently looking for experts in areas such as gardening/art/wildlife who can give us advice and guidance. If you are wondering what we are doing, here are some of the things we achieved last year: - Ongoing lobbying of Cork County Council to

Soon the school hedgehog will wake from his long sleep and the children will discover the wonders of the Spring season as it erupts all around the park! Wishing all the children and their families a Happy New Year. We are currently taking bookings for September 2014 for places in the play school room and for the free pre-school year. Stop Ignoring Your Body’s “Check Engine” Light Dr Stefan Billing, Koru Chiropractic
Tired? Thirsty? It’s Because Your Body Is Trying to Tell You Something…
Each of us is given this amazing, self-healing, self-regulating body. And, thankfully, it takes care of millions of details all by itself without having to give it any thought. We’ll call that your “autopilot” feature, and it gets many of our patients into trouble. It allows you to neglect some of the basic maintenance necessary in regards to health. Don’t let autopilot fool you.
So What’s in Your Owner’s Manual? Exercise (check engine light = lack of energy and strength) Proper rest (check engine light = fatigue, trouble concentrating) Nutritious diet (check engine light = hunger, lack of energy, digestion or weight issues) Hydration (check engine light = thirst, headaches) Neglect any of these basics and your body warns you with hunger, thirst, lack of energy, headaches and more symptoms or discomfort.
Your Check Engine Light Is Your Nervous System What it comes down to is maintaining overall good health, in every aspect of your life. And thus a properly functioning engine, or nervous system, is key. Since it affects everything, it’s crucial to make sure your nervous system is subluxation-free and running smoothly. That’s where we come in.
Who’s the Mechanic? Your local Chiropractor, Dr Billing of Course
It’s exactly why we’re here. To help. Our primary purpose is to rid your body of any road bumps through chiropractic care! By aligning your spine and restoring you nerve communication, we’re helping your body take care of itself, so you get plenty of good miles out of life.
And That’s Why We’re Here…
IPain is your body’s check engine light telling you to see your chiropractor. However, waiting until you have pain is a lot like waiting until you’re starving to death before you eat, or not drinking any water until you’ve had heat stroke. Getting a heat check up after a heart attack, you get the idea.....Don’t wait. Sleep better, feel better, have more energy! We’re here today and we’re ready to help. Give us a call to schedule a check-up and we’ll see how we can help get you back on the road again, running better than you were before.

500 TYCO JOBS BOOST FOR CORK
Labour TD Ciarán Lynch has said the announcement by a major multinational of the potential creation of over 500 jobs is a hugely encouraging sign for the city. “I strongly welcome the announcement by Tyco of this major investment in the city. As the world’s largest company in the area of fire protection and security, Tyco is looking to Cork to locate a new business services centre, which would see the creation of a range of roles across sourcing and procurement, finance, IT, legal, customer service and research and development, among others. “The company is keen to fill these roles using as much local talent as possible, and I would encourage local jobseekers to have a look at the company’s careers site – tycocareers-cork. com – to apply for one of the categories of jobs listed. This latest jobs announcement demonstrates Cork’s burgeoning reputation as a hub for Foreign Direct Investment and highskilled employment, and represents another step forward in terms of job creation locally. VACCINATIONS Primary Course This Course requires your Puppy to be vaccinated at 8 weeks and again at 10 Weeks of age. This course gives your puppy 12 months protection against a number of life threatening infectious diseases. Your puppy/Adult Dog will require an Annual Vaccination/Booster (Once a year for life) to maintain immunity.
CANINE COUGH VACCINATIONS
Canine Cough is also known as Kennel Cough because of the likely hood of catching it when in close proximity to other dogs. Canine cough is a highly contagious disease of the respiratory tract. Dogs of all ages can be affected and signs include a harsh, dry, convulsive cough, much like whooping cough in humans. The coughing can last for several weeks and during this time more serious complications such as pneumonia may arise. Canine Cough Vaccine provides 12 months of Immunity and is administered intranasally. Protection develops within days after vaccination.
MICRO CHIPPING
Micro-chipping is a simple and effective way to make sure that your Puppy/Adult Dog can be easily identified should they get lost or stolen. All information regarding contact details of the owner is registered on a database system for easy access should your pet stray. A small microchip is inserted under the skin on the back of the neck. This chip has a unique code which is linked to your personal contact details once registration is Complete. LAST WEEK’S BRAIN TEASER Young Ben Bright had another good idea. He bet his friends that they couldn’t take hold of the ends of a piece of string and, without letting go, tie a knot in the middle of the string. After they had failed miserably he showed how it was done. What did he do ? LAST WEEK’S ANSWER He folded his arms, picked up the ends of the string, unfolded his arms and hey presto, A Knot!

What was the answer ?
