Metropolis on Water!

I would like to welcome our new neighbour Michael Mealy and The Kitchen Centre outlet to Douglas. The Kitchen Centre workshop and showrooms are based in Hollyhill and offer a wide variety of top quality kitchens and now also through their new showroom situated opposite Morris House and next to John O’Sullivan’s Pub. Amy Cronin is the is the one with the welcoming smile at The Kitchen Centre (Douglas) and whether you are browsing or buying be sure to tell Amy where you read about it. * * * The hullabaloo is all over for another four years and while, as a nation, we are way down the pecking order in the medal tally, controversy is never far away from Irish sport it seems. Congratulations to our medal winners and their valiant effort in their achievements. However, the hopes of our athletics squad never materialized, our rowers were unlucky and as for our equestrian representation goes – well enough said about dopey horses! I am a sports fan across the board, but must admit I only watched all of 10 minutes of the Olympics coverage and that was the final of the Women’s Volleyball between the USA and Brazil. I guess I didn’t miss much – even Michael Phelps eclipse of Mark Spitz swimming record didn’t break much sweat amongst the worlds press. Maybe I’m just getting old! * * * I was invited aboard the Independence of the Seas berthed in Cobh last Monday for the corporate lunch hosted by the Port of Cork. This is truly a magnificent vessel and presently the largest cruise liner afloat in the world today. Walking down the promenade deck which is totally enclosed, with bars, cafes, restaurants, jewellers and gift shops, I could have been in a modern shopping centre ashore. Pod type glass elevators rise and fall in this metropolis on water giving certain aspects a futuristic atmosphere while the dining room I had lunch in, was adorned with paintings and crystal chandeliers – wonderful. Swimming pools, tennis court, basketball court, climbing wall and accommodation to rival any top class hotel make this and cruising the new big thing in holidays. Dispelled is the myth that cruises are for wealthy retired people, I may even check it out myself! * * * Well done to all involved in the Billy Coleman Memorial Bowls Tournament held at Mahon Community Centre last weekend.

Children’s Rights

Dear Editor The recent suggestion by the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Barry Andrews TD, and others that there are ‘no compelling reasons’ to hold a referendum on children’s rights is misguided. There are many compelling reasons for a constitutional amendment: it is necessary — and the only possible route — to provide express rights in the Constitution which recognise children as individual rights-holders, to ensure all children are treated equally within the Constitution and to ensure that the judiciary and legislature base their decisions in relation to children on the ‘best interests of the child’ principle. Constitutional change is about valuing each and every child in Ireland. And with parents playing a key role in upholding the rights of children in Ireland, parents’ rights and children’s rights go hand in hand. Childhood does not stand still while adults argue for over ten years on the merits of changing the Constitution. There are 116,241 children living in County Cork alone – how many ‘compelling reasons’ do we need? We have heard the rhetoric: now is the time for action. Yours faithfully Jillian van Turnhout Chief Executive Children’s Rights Allian

Dear Editor Just a note to thank you so very much for all your help with our recent fundraiser on the cruise ship the “Norwegian Jade” in Cobh on July 16,2008. The competition that you featured in the magazine helped enormously to publicize the fundraiser and was very successful for us both from a financial perspective and also because it increased awareness of our regional office here in Cork. We wish you continued success with the magazine and look forward to working in collaboration with and your staff at a future date. Yours sincerely, Pauline Lynch Southern Regional Development Officer Diabetes Federation of Ireland.

Riddle Me This ? Dear Editor

R.T.E correspondent George Lee tells us daily that we are slipping deeper into a serious recession. Meanwhile back at the ranch the Cork City Council published a guide on how Developers can play a part in protecting Cork’s Heritage in the Docklands. I quote “ It comes at a time of unprecedented development in Cork, a “Boom” which has seen Cork experience it’s greatest era of prosperity, the boom is expected to continue with €1Bn worth of developments in Cork Docklands” unquote. Pray tell me, who is playing ‘Alice in Wonderland’ games with the citizens of Leeside? Cork Docklands Invites Public Participation in the Preparation of its River use and Management Plan

Cork Chamber appoints BiznetCork Skillnet Network Manager

Thursday, August 21st, 2008. Cork City Council has decided to commission consultants to prepare a River Use and Management Plan for the Docklands area and is seeking the involvement and participation of the people of Cork in determining the main issues which its proposed plan will address. Following feedback received during the preparation of the South Docks Local Area Plan which was adopted earlier this year, it was decided to develop a strategy to anticipate and plan for future changes in how the River Lee is used. A Draft Scoping Report which sets out the main issues to be addressed in the Plan has been prepared. “The River Lee is an integral part of the commercial, social and cultural life of Cork city and has shaped the development of the city. We are anxious that all stakeholders have the opportunity to shape the content of the River Use and Management Plan and to have a say in identifying key issues early in the Plan’s preparation stages,” according to Pat Ledwidge, Director of Services in the City Council’s Docklands Directorate.

Ellenora Lynch has recently joined BiznetCork Skillnet as Network Manager, with overall responsibility for the management and coordination for the BiznetCork Skillnet. Cork Chamber has been a key driver in the success of BiznetCork Skillnet, having identified affordable and quality training as a need within the membership of the Chamber. BiznetCork Skillnet with the support of Cork Chamber has facilitated the delivery of extensive training to its members since its inception in 2003.

Ms Lynch brings with her considerable experience in training and development, having worked in this area for several years. She is also an experienced programme manager who has managed complex projects, both at home and overseas. Ms Lynch has previous experience of Skillnets, having managed the IFA Skillnet from 2003 – 2005. She has worked overseas for the last number of years in the area of programme management and capacity building. Ms Lynch holds a BAgrSc from University College Dublin, and qualifications in Training & Development and Project Management. The BiznetCork Skillnet is funded by member companies and the Training Networks Programme, an initiative of Skillnets Ltd. funded from the National Training Fund through the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment.

Asian

The Draft Scoping Report identifies three key issues: Issue 1: The need to identify the types of activities will take place on the river in the future, how these activities should be managed and who will hold this responsibility.

Furnishings

Issue 2: The need to identify the manner in which the River Lee can play a more active role in the lives of residents and visitors to Docklands in terms of leisure and recreational activities and overall identity and experience.

HOME & GARDEN SELECT HAND MADE PIECES OF ASIAN ART

Issue 3: The need to ensure that the quality of the environment remains paramount in the process of the regeneration of the River Lee.

Some Items at a SPECIAL PRICE!

“We would encourage as many people as possible to have an involvement in the development of the final Scoping Report,” said Mr. Ledwidge. The Draft Cork Docklands River Use and Management Plan Draft Scoping Report is available to download at www.corkcity.ie/docklands and submissions can be made in writing before 5pm on September 19th, 2008 to Evelyn Mitchell, Senior Executive Planner, Docklands Directorate, Cork City Council, City Hall, Cork or by email to: corkdocks@corkcity. ie.

Douglas Writers Group Barry’s of Douglas Competition

with Ronnie McGinn

The Douglas Writers Group, next meeting will take place in Douglas Library on Friday the 12th Sept at 5.30 pm. Congratulations to Frank. E. Lee on winning the Chartbusters Prize for last month. The prize for Aug comes courtesy of Barry’s of Douglas, they are offering a full lunch for two for the winner. So Writers get scribbling and have your poem/ short story ready for the 8th August. New Members Welcome! Meetings held on the second Friday of each month.

In her “Well Worth Having” book ‘My Road’ Marion Rose Horgan tells us that she wrote this poem to mark the anniversary of the death of Jack Doyle. who was a legend in his own lifetime. He was born in Queen’s Street, now Connolly Street. in Cobh. on August the thirty-first. 1913, and spent just a few short years here. before the finger of fame beckoned him onto a wider stage. He excelled in the boxing arena and on the stage, where he mixed with figures of world renown. In his turbulent lifetime, he experienced the heady heights of fame and celebrity but also knew despair and destitution. He died, penniless, on December the thirteenth, 1978 in Paddington and his body was brought back to Cobh. He was buried in the historic Old Church graveyard. just outside the town. His amazing drive and versatility will always be remembered with pride by the people of Cobh.

JACK DOYLE REMEMBERED Oh Gorgeous Gael. you dreamed your dreams, Which later came to be. And many a heart you charmed and won, Through your diversity. Your prowess in the boxing ring, Brought fame beyond our land. And fortune smiled its transient smile On you, so fine and grand. The bright lights lured you on to sing In London’s halls of fame, And Cobh was proud of its fine son, And of his Irish name. Yes, you became a wonder, Of ring and stage and screen, But wonders too, begin to wane As darker times set in.

Your light was quenched before its time, Amid adversity, Far from your home and those you loved, In Queenstown by the Lee. Three requiems were held for you, As you lay cold and pale. In London, Dublin and in Cobh, They mourned the Gorgeous Gael.

You lived each day, and seized your dreams And realised each one, And Cobh will not forget you Jack, Its proud, illustrious son. All fame and glory wilt and fade, Down through the mists of time, But the love and pride will never die, In those you left behind. Learning is Child’s Play with the Academy Network

invest in training means to invest in the future of the business. Speaking on the importance of training to businesses Ellen Gunning, Director Irish Academy, stated “Skills can be described as a global currency for a globalising world. If a company has significant skill capital it will help the business to be innovative, remain competitive and enable sustainable growth. It will improve its productivity and competitiveness. Certainly in the environment we are working in today such skills would be a welcome investment for any business owner. Research among our members has indicated that this training programme is a very welcomed initiative. We are hosting an open evening on September 9th for individuals to learn more about the Academy Network and how we can enable businesses to become more successful through communications”.

Corporate Training Programme launched to support Cork business growth The Academy Network, the national networking division of the Irish Academy, recently launched a proactive and stimulating programme of training courses for Cork businesses. Answering the need for businesses to become more competitive, in turbulent times, these training programmes aim to provide participants with the skills to write business plans, network successfully, communicate key messages and write press releases. It is the first time that the Academy has offered its corporate training courses outside of Dublin.

The first course to be held in Cork, in September, deals with how to write a business plan – vital for any business and for its financiers. In October Networking Queen Tricia Murphy, TiG Alliance, will host a highly interactive workshop on teaching networking skills – how to go to a business meeting and leave with three good business leads. In November the Academy is hosting a conference called ‘Mission Impossible’ which will focus on impossibly difficult messages and how to communicate them and, finally, in

In an increasing competitive market it is important for business owners to acknowledge that training is not a cost, it is an investment. It is less expensive to let employees spend a certain amount of time learning new skills than it is to train a new person to replace an employee. To

December course participants will learn how to write press releases and generate publicity for their business or charity. The Academy trainers are all practitioners who bring the benefit of hands-on experience to the courses. The courses will run over full or half-days. The Cork branch of the Network was launched in May and a local committee has been formed to drive forward membership and participants for training courses. The committee is chaired by David Moran (DMOS Ltd) and the members include Laura Curtin (COMMUNiCATE PR), Gwenda Hughes (McCarthy’s Bar and Bistro) and Billy McGill (photographer). The Academy Network is open to anyone working in the communications industry as a communicator (PR, marketing, event management or advertising) or as a supplier (hotel, photographer, printer, graphic designer, webmaster etc.). Details of all courses are on the academy website www.irishacademy.com/ network.html and members can attend at a preferential, reduced rate.

Ask Dr. Doug

by Dr. Douglas Meckelborg B.Ed., D.C. (Doctor of Chiropractic)

Chris Was Never Told

I would like to share a short story about Chris, a patient of mine who came in to see me 8 months ago. Chris was in trouble and suffering from a chronic neck problem that started shortly after what seemed like a minor accident at work three years ago. He was in desperate pain with his neck and right shoulder and was suffering from a long list of other associated health conditions including headaches, dizziness, pins and needles and loss of strength in his arm. He told me he was losing motivation for the things he used to enjoy and felt irritable, constantly tired and fatigued. His lack of focus and concentration along with the relentless neck soreness were affecting his work and home life. Sadly, even his two small children were becoming more of a burden to him than a joy in his life.

Health & Beauty

On his first visit with me, Chris assured me he “had been everywhere” to try and get this problem sorted and was, of course, skeptical. He had MRI scans that showed nothing, blood tests that came back negative, many courses of medication and anti-inflammatories that made him feel sicker, various exercise and stretching programs that didn’t work and was even told at one point that he needed to take anti-depressants. On the advice of a friend he decided to have his spine and nervous system checked by a Chiropractor. After examining Chris, it was quite apparent that he had a problem in his spine. You could see by his posture that his head was shifted to one side and there was a noticeable tilt and rotation of his head. His shoulders were not level and his head was jutting out from his body. After sending him for x-rays of his spine, it was obvious where his problem was coming from. The misalignments of the vertebrae in his neck were putting pressure on his spinal cord and nervous system

ACNE

Acne can erupt at any age and up to 8% of those who had clear skin in youth can develop this skin disorder as adults. It is caused when sebaceous glands (at the base of hair follicles) secrete too much sebum which backs up, causing blocked pores, lumps, fluid filled cysts and inflamed skin. Sebum overproduction can be due to hormonal imbalances, stress, skin friction, medications, and hormone drugs. And it can be aggravated by certain food intolerances. 3 month treatment: Vitamin B6 50mg each morning: if aggravated by the menstrual cycle or menopause Vitamin C* 500mg twice daily, Vitamin E** 400mg per day, Selenium*** 200mcg per day: to promote the immune system to keep bacteria at bay Zinc 25mg, Copper 2mg per day: aimed at healing skin complaints Wash daily using ordinary soap

and water Eat fruit, vegetables, whole-grains and most importantly fibre to help clear old hormonal residues which can aggravate acne Use oil free cosmetics

and were causing the normal signals and messages from his brain to be interrupted. This was causing many of his health issues. After having a series of chiropractic adjustments to reduce the misalignments and correct the postural distortions, I am happy to say Chris has made a remarkable recovery and is now on the road to a healthier, pain-free body and a full, active life. He doesn’t dread going to work anymore and actually enjoys being around his kids! The sad fact is that Chris had been living with his symptoms for more than 3 years and no one ever told him that his posture could be causing the problems to his health. He was suppressing the symptoms with pain medication and letting the problem worsen with time. Getting to the source of what was causing the underlying problem and restoring normal neurological function allowed his own body the ability to heal and be well. Are you a Chris or do you know people like Chris that have lost hope? Chiropractors are here to help.

gthingsardening to do this week

Crossword

It’s a good time to start planing where to put your spring bulbs.. As usual we try to give you a few ideas on what might need doing in your garden this week. Not everything in this article may apply to your garden - but there might be something, if not this week maybe next week. Flower Garden Lift gladioli as foliage dies down, and dry the corms for storage. Sow crevice plants in wall joints, mixing the seeds with a little clay. Sow hardy annuals in situ or in frames for early blooms next year. Take cuttings of hebes in a cold frame as an insurance against winter losses. Divide and replant winter-flowering Iris unguicularis. Prune weeping standard roses by cutting back exhausted flowering shoots. Kitchen Garden Harvest haricot beans when quite dry and other beans for seed. Start transplanting spring cabbage to final positions, ideally on to old onion beds. Cut out fruited shoots of an-trained Morello cherries, and train in new stems. Cloche perpetual strawberries to prolong the crop. Sow summer cauliflowers in a frame for transplanting next spring. Finish planting new strawberry beds. Lawns & Hedges Continue mowing when the lawn is dry, but raise the height of the cutters. Greenhouse Plant potatoes in pots for Christmas. Pot up Brompton stocks sown in August, and keep in a frame for winter colour indoors. Continue cutting cucumbers, but watch out for mildew and red spider mite Water Garden Take care when feeding fish from now on, and only give high-protein food. Bring portions of pistia, eichorna and other tender plants indoors to over winter in an aquarium. Divide marginal plants before the soil and water cools down. In General Watch out for miIdew on all crops and herbaceous plants as the weather turns cool and damp

Brainteazer Ben Bright was a smart kid. He bet all the other kids in his class that they couldn’t stick a pin in a fully inflated balloon without busting it. He was right, they couldn’t. Each loser had to give him their lunch money and by the end of the day he was quite rich. The other kids insisted that the trick was quite

impossible but Ben did it easily. How? Last Week Teazer Two little boys come out of a movie. “ I liked the bit where that dinosaur ate all those cavemen” said one. “Rubbish” replied his friend” it couldn’t do it”. “But that was Tyrannosaurus Rex, the most fearsome reptile in the history of the world! Of course it could eat a few lousy cavemen”, insisted his friend with maddening superiority. Who was right? Last Week Answer Dinosaurs and cavemen never lived at the same time. So cavemen were never eaten by dinosaurs

Outrage as Cork parents forced to leave county to get TB vaccine for babies

Ballinlough I.C.A. Ballinlough I.C.A. will open on Wednesday 3rd September at 8.00pm in the Community Centre. New members welcome. Unislim Classes Unislim Classes Wednesday’s 5.30pm at the Community Centre.

The Minister for Health and the HSE must take immediate steps to resolve the ongoing denial of the BCG vaccine to Cork babies.

Annual Review of Register of Electors - Ballinlough/ Blackrock/Douglas Road The annual review of the Register of Electors will begin in July/August 2008. This will involve a door-to-door update of households within the city boundaries enquiring as to who is resident at that address to ensure their inclusion in the Draft Register of Electors 2009/2010. Every person who is ‘ordinary resident and over 18 years of age up to and including 15th February next’ is eligible for inclusion in the Final Register of Electors 2009/2010. All persons should ensure that their names are included in the Final Register of Electors 2009/2010 to ensure that they are registered to vote at the Local Elections 2009. Forms for inclusion in the Register are available at Garda Stations, Post Offices and Libraries. Application forms are also available from the Franchise Section, Cork City Council, Tel: (021) 4924107/4924108/4924109/email franchise@corkcity.ie or from the Reception Desk, City Hall, Cork. During the next few weeks enumerators will be in the Ballinlough/ Blackrock/Douglas areas. All enumerators carry appropriate I.D.

Cork parents are now bringing their babies to other counties to get the BCG vaccine which is being denied to them in their own county. I have met parents who have brought their babies to counties like Waterford and Kerry to receive the vaccine. The fact that babies in Cork are denied a vital vaccine solely on the basis of the county in which they were born is totally unacceptable. The BCG vaccine is administered to newborn babies to prevent TB and a commitment was given that all newborn babies in Cork would have access to the vaccine by October 2007. Despite this promise, almost a year later Cork’s newborn babies do not have access to the vaccine and 10,000 Cork babies are now on a waiting list for the TB vaccine. Despite this the Government and the HSE continue to refuse to accept that a serious problem exists because of their mismanagement and refuse to make resolving this a priority. When I questioned the Minister for Health and the HSE in May and June about this problem I was assured that: · a recruitment process was underway; · a neonatal service for newborn babies was to be established in the Cork University Maternity Hospital where the BCG vaccine would be available on request; · arrangements to undertake additional clinics were being made which would address the current waiting list.

St. Michael’s Cemetery Blackrock The Annual mass and prayers will take place on Wednesday 27th August at 7.00pm Our Lady of Lourdes Church Devotions every Tuesday at 7.00pm Mass Times Saturday Night 6.00pm & 7.30pm Sunday 9.00am 10.30am & 12.00noon Catholic papers on sale after all the Masses on Saturday and Sunday

But we are still waiting to see progress on these promises. Minister Harney and the HSE must accept responsibility for this problem and take steps to resolve it. Promises of action will do nothing to help the many parents in Cork who are seriously concerned by the lack of the BCG vaccine. Until the BCG vaccine is available on request to newborn babies in Cork, and toddlers currently on the waiting list are given the vaccine, we will continue to see parents bringing their babies to other counties to receive a vaccine denied to them in their own. I will again raise this issue directly with the Minister for Health when the Dáil resumes next month

Community

young @ heart by Phil Goodman Our summer is almost behind us as the nights are chilly – what summer you might say??? As our summer trips are over, we now concentrate on our Autumn/Winter programme of events. The good news is we have acquired temporary premises, kindly given to us by Mrs. Anne Murphy in St. Patrick’s Woollen Mills. I have been shouting for premises for our seniors for a long time, as there are no facilities to develop a variety of programmes which will improve the quality of life and health of our members, and to also build a sense of community and reduce loneliness and isolation. We hope in the coming months to provide services and skills to assist our members lead a more fulfilling life. I know many of you are very keen to do computer classes. I have hoping to have this in place before too long. Our first project will start on the 15th September at 11.00am with a teacher from the Niche Programme, which is called “Go for life exercises”, which will be of great benefit to us all. Anne will start with joint mobilisation and various different ideas to get our stiff bones working again. We will have this every Monday morning at 11.00am, followed by a cuppa. There is also great interest in Ten Pin Bowling. We also hope to have someone from the Department of Social Welfare come along to let you know exactly what you are entitled to, as there is always confusion in this area. Tony Davis of the Garda Siochana has offered to come and explain about personal alarms etc. We will be sharing on alternative days with Foroige, one of our leading National Youth organisations. Again there are no facilities for the youth of Douglas, and this is much needed. I would welcome your thoughts and ideas for the Autumn/Winter programme. For example is there enough interest in Art, Crochet, Card games etc. Please let me know. We will continue our monthly Socials in St. Columba’s Hall and all our evening activities, as it is a place where our members are made really welcome. Thanks to chairman John White for his continued support. On behalf of the Young At Heart we would like to thank Cllr. Deirdre Forde and Bronwyn Cross for putting a lot of hard work in securing our premises, and also Gardai Paul O’Riordan and Tony Davis. We are very grateful to you all. There will be a Coffee Morning in Douglas Village Shopping Centre on the 30th September with free teas and coffees courtesy of Bronwyn. Music is by that fabulous entertainer Ritchie C, so come along and meet your friends at 10.30am. Thought for to-day: “If you don’t have confidence, you’ll always find a way not to win”

in the loop with Peter Bowles D.J.

Katy Perry has torn up the charts to the number one spot in absolutely no time at all.

Katy is simply put, an American version of Lily Allen or Kate Nash regards wit and style. She tried a career as a Christian artist using her birth name Katy Hudson but this didn’t work out, Kate hooked up with the producers at the Honchos record label and they were able to give her the extra push for mainstream pop. Her single “Ur So Gay” came out just before “I Kissed A Girl” and caused quite a stir in the music industry but because of flagrant lyrics it wasn’t available to a wide audience, on the other hand “I Kissed A Girl” has more socially acceptable lyrics and the production from Dr. Luke is enough to make a dent in the charts. As well as that Jason Nevins has released a club mix which doesn’t differ too much from the original, just the added necessities for a club

environment. Both of these singles show us her song writing ability and originality. Somehow I don’t think this is the last we’ll hear of Katy! Rihanna has made her way back into the charts with her single “Disturbia”. This tune kicks off with an opening riff which sounds like Eiffel 65’s hit, “Blue”. “Disturbia” is on its way to being Rihannas 10th top 10 pop single in the US. It was leaked that “Disturbia” was originally supposed to be sung by Rihannas boyfriend Chris Brown but his team believed it was better suited to her and there you have it, the second new single from the re-release of her album “Good Girl Gone Bad”. Chris didn’t mind this considering the same team provided him with current pop hit “Forever”. Something I’ve noticed is that with every release Rihanna appears more confident and settled in her role as one of the most successful pop singers at the moment. Finally, I went along to check out the Anybodies single release gig in the Pavillion recently. The lads came on stage at 10pm to a young and energetic crowd. They played their new single “Valintine” and followed that up with a fantastic cover of Aha’s “Take On Me”, which really got the crowd going. You can download their single on www. itunes.ie. Oh and just to let you know, as you read this I’m in Spain!!!

G.A.A. FOCUS

Snippets from the Local and National Scene By Pat Harrington

Cork Hurling 2007 – 2008

I refer here to the era that saw Gerald McCarthy and his management team oversee the progress of the Cork senior hurlers. Some comments heard after the Tipp game inferred that Gerald was harsh in replacing Timmy Mac and that Joe Deane should have been introduced earlier. In the wake of the Galway and Clare matches Gerald McCarthy was a hero. My point is that whilst Gerald takes either the heat or the plaudits – depending on results – surely it is the management team that 0makes all the decisions. My friend Ronan believes the manager calls the shots on the field of play. If that’s the way it is then the other selectors need not be there at all. Wouldn’t you wonder why one would put ones name forward to be part of a selection committee? On the other hand I watched the Cork under 21 management team under the guidance of manager John Considine this year. The body language of the three selectors was obvious as they seemed to be clamouring for change. Once again it appeared that John Considine was calling the shots. The changes, in my opinion were made too late.

• Cork young tennis aces battled it out at Sunday’s Well Tennis Club yesterda to scoop one of the prizes on offer at the Cork final of the nationwide KitKat Parks tennis programme. Over the past eight weeks in 16 venues across Cork, tennis coaches have put over 1000 children between 6 and 17 years through their paces in the annual KitKat Parks Tennis Leagues. The programme culminated in a grand slam final, giving Ireland’s next Rafael Nadal or Venus williams the oppportunity to be discovered. Pictured Alex Bahl aged 13 from Rochestown, Cork. Seánie McGrath

In the lead-up to the Kilkenny game former Cork hurler Seánie McGrath maintained that the Cork training games (15 aside) were every bit as intense as those teak-tough Kilkenny sessions. Obviously the Glen man has not attended training sessions at Páirc Uí Chaoimh during 2008. In my humble opinion (having never gotten within an asses roar of wearing the red jersey) what I saw was players with lots of space playing ‘tippy, tappy’ stuff – certainly not championship hurling.

Cork Hurling (continued)

A number of players were introduced in 2007, namely Shane O’Neill and Patrick Cronin – both acquitted themselves well. In 2008 other players were given a chance in the league as well as the championship. I refer to Patrick Horgan, Paudie O’Sullivan and to a lesser degree, Eoin Cadogan. For the most part what we got was the status quo; the impression I got was that the selectors hadn’t much faith in those on the periphery. The Cork hurlers have given great service over the past six years and served us with great enjoyment. It is now time for a new management team. Some players will go, perhaps of their own accord. The new Cork management may or may not like to take further action. One feels it is time to rebuild. If I had a shopping list of the players required I would certainly seek a full forward with pace, strength and height (from my utopian wish list). There is a need for some ball-winning half forwards. I cannot be sure about the full back position; by all accounts Sully had a mighty game against the Cats. Certainly one would have some serious reservations. John Gardiner needs to be moved to midfield. The incoming management should be allowed to make their own decisions in relation to the type of game they want the team to play without interference from the players and other parties. I am aware of the ‘happy families’ scenario that existed at times but the players cannot be seen as dictating policy. The incoming selectors will have an opportunity to see players in the Waterford Crystal. This should give the newer players plenty of scope to display their skills. The difficulty over the last few years was that it seemed to be harder to get off the county team than it was to get on it. During the imminent rebuilding process it is imperative that patience is shown by the selectors as well as the general public. Perhaps the incoming committee should be given two years with the option of a third term.

Cork Minor Hurlers

Well done to Mark Collins on his performance in the minor hurling semifinal played in Croke Park. Mark won a number of frees besides setting up some of his colleagues for scores. Cork were the authors of their own downfall by (a) poor clearances, (b) some of the forwards went on ridiculous solo runs with no particular plan and (c) the three full forwards

were called ashore. To be fair the team made a big effort in the final ten minutes but defeat was their lot.

Waterford vs. Tipperary

I have rarely been as engrossed in a match as I was in this encounter and I was absolutely thrilled for Waterford. They have suffered heartbreak in five al-Ireland semis over the last number of years. Perhaps in the past they didn’t get the breaks; their character in this victory was immense. One has to say that Gerald and Justin McCarthy have done untold good work with Waterford over the years and that should not be forgotten. Well done to the Déise and Davy Fitz. Talk to you next week, Pat.

Double championship delight for Douglas!!

Douglas premier intermediate hurlers defeated Youghal to make it through to the quarter final of the championship on Monday night. The conditions underfoot following the constant rain of the previous week ensured that this game would be very tight. Eoin Cadogan opened the scoring for Douglas from a free followed by a point from play by Willie Coveney. However, Youghal responded with two accurate frees. The entire first half followed the same vein with Douglas edging away but Youghal coming back into it with well taken frees. Douglas received a great boost in the final fifteen minutes of the half with brilliant attacks and well taken scores by James and Stephen Moylan. Alan Barry at full back for Douglas was also very solid. In the final few minutes of the half Cormac Dineen scored a goal for Douglas leaving them with a half time score of 1-11 to Youghal’s seven points. Youghal made the better start in the second half scoring four unanswered points. Douglas eventually scored with a free from Stephen Moylan followed by another score from play by Wilie Coveney who played well. The second half saw little to separate the sides. Youghal free taker Leigh Desmond fired over three frees in the last ten minutes of the half bringing only two points between the sides in the dying minutes. However Stephen Moylan pointed a free in injury time bringing Douglas’ final tally to 1-17 against Youghal’s 17 points. Douglas now go on to face Ballymartle in the quarter final of the championship. Douglas U21 hurlers followed the winning streak by defeating Blackrock by a point in the U21 hurling championship game on Saturday 23rd August in Ballinlough on a scoreline of ten points to nine. Similar to other games over the past few weeks conditions for this game were dreadful. Stephen Moylan opened the scoring for Douglas with a free. Douglas and Blackrock exchanges scores for the opening twenty minutes. The score after 22 minutes was two points each. Douglas then raced into a four point lead at half time which began with a point from Mark Collins. The score at half-time was six points to two. Blackrock got off to a better start in the second and after ten minutes the score was Douglas 7 to Blackrock’s 6 points. In very difficult conditions both sides battled hard and it was a drawn game in injury time. However, Douglas launched an attack with Stephen Moylan scoring a great point from play. Blackrock had a number of opportunities to draw the game in the dying minutes but a solid Douglas defence insured a victory for Douglas.

College Corinthians AFC

The new soccer season is almost upon us and our various adult and schoolboy teams are now back in training. This season the Club will field sixteen schoolboy teams ranging in ages from under 11 to under 16 which makes Corinthians by far and away the biggest schoolboys Club in Cork. Underage Section Our Underage section which caters for the Under six to Under Ten age Groups has also resumed after the summer break. Schoolboys are coached in the basic skills of the game with the emphasis very much on fun and enjoyment. The specific times of the sessions are as follows: Saturday Under Six ( 2002 / 2003 ) - 12.30pm – 1.45pm Under Seven (2001) - 12.30pm – 1.45pm Under Eight ( 2000) - 4.30pm - 6.00pm Sunday Under Ten ( 1998 ) - 10.00am – 11.30am Under Nine ( 1999 ) – 11.45am – 1.15pm Under Six (2001 & 2002) There is always a special welcome for our six’s many of whom are coming up to Corinthians for the first time. For coaching purposes they are split into small sized groups (average ten per group) where they are given plenty of opportunity to participate and enjoy themselves. Later in the year, our Under Six Street Leagues take centre stage and thy are always the highlight of the Underage season in Corinthians, the games are fun filled with the emphasis very much on enjoyment. So if you were born in 2001 / 2002, why not come along, we would love to see you in Corinthians.
