Remember when mom would always say, “An apple a day, keeps the doctor away?” Nichole Rich finds out where the saying came from, and whether or not it still rings true today.
appy third year anniversary to us! Yes, can you believe that we are three years old this month!? We certainly can’t! And oh, what a ride it has been! Also, as you know this month we celebrate Mother’s Day and so starting off our May issue, we have Laura Rossi’s brand new segment called Savoir-Faire, where we will talk about all things hot, chic, and funky. For this Mother’s Day, she lists all the cool things you can go get for Momma! We promise she will love you for it!
Another quote we have in this issue is from Benjamin Franklin, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” and contributor Pleshette Vonner writes about how prevention can help our quest for better health
For out Talent Talks feature this month, we bring you our youngest model yet – Makenzie Shea. She’s fun and cute and oh, so adorable. Learn about her love for computer engineering, sports and dance.
For most folks, partying is fun and as summer approaches, our social calendars are filled with them. But how do you plan an event without your blood pressure going through the roof? The collaborative team of LisaMarie Dwyer and McCall Kelly give us some quick tips to plan like a pro. Out on the town last month, the Spring Colors 2015 fashion show was held once again at the Providence Marriott Downtown. There was no shortage of colors, looks and outfits to die for. We recap the overall event for you.
Time once was, when TV consisted of just soaps and sitcoms, news and documentaries. Then a new genre popped up, in the form of reality TV, and has captured the nation’s attention almost completely. So do you have a preference? Reality TV or scripted TV? Jaclyn Pelopida explores the rise of the (not so) new genre, and how it measures up to its scripted counterpart. With winter finally and reluctantly relinquishing its hold on us, spring coming into its own, and summer fast approaching, swimsuits will start to emerge and women the world over will start to think of one thing – hair removal. While shaving is quick and painless, waxing can give you a smoother finish with longer-lasting results. Olga Hawwa teaches us how to get silky smooth the right way. And while we’re at it, do you know your skin tone and type? And do you know how to care for it properly? Contributor Cassie Brewer shows us how to find our one unique shade and how to enhance it. From across the pond, Cinzia Antonelli educates us on the culture, in Italy, of dressing up for dinner, and as you will learn from her piece, it is with a lot of panache!
StyleWeek is getting ready for its second event for the year – a circus themed fundraiser to benefit the student mentorship program. This will be taking place on May 29, at the Arcade Providence.
As we age, we need to keep our hearts healthy. Without it we are, simply, nothing – emotionally and physically. So how can we keep this vital organ in mint condition? Elizabeth Phinney teaches us how to keep it pumping longer and stronger And lastly for this month, we interview Providence based fashion designer Caronah Cassell. A breast cancer survivor, she faced it head on, conquered it and lives each day with a renewed zest for life, and uses her designs to make other women feel the same way. Holy moly, this is a packed issue, but before I leave you to it, I want to take a moment to say ‘thank you,’ dear reader, for sticking with us this long! We would not be doing this without you. YOU have made this journey worthwhile.

When the temperatures start to climb, we start thinking about shorts, sleeveless tops, and bathing suits, and with that comes more attention to hair removal. As my clients know, I am a big fan of waxing. Whereas shaving can be quick and painless, it can irritate the skin and for many, it requires a daily commitment to avoid stubble. Waxing, on the other hand, gives the skin a smoother look and feel and has much longer-lasting results. Most areas can be waxed: face, brows, lip, underarms, legs, arms, back, chest, and bikini. Results typically last about four weeks, but can vary depending on the rate of your hair growth, ethnic origin, and hair type. One of the biggest fears is the “pain factor.” Although the first time can be uncomfortable, subsequent treatments generally get easier because the hairs grow back finer and sparser with repeated waxing.
waxing is safe for you. * Avoid shaving or tweezing between services.
* Be consistent. For best results, wax every four weeks to allow the hairs to be at the same growth cycle.
When you start a waxing program, you can enjoy silkier, smoother skin and more freedom from undesirable hair. The results are WORTH IT!
Here are some tips for a successful waxing service: * Use a numbing cream and/or take a painkiller (not aspirin) about 30-40 minutes before your service.
* Take a warm (not hot) shower and use a body scrub to open up the pores and get rid of dead surface skin cells around them. This will allow the hairs to come out easier.
* Avoid toners, astringents, or ice on the areas to be waxed. They tend to tighten the pores.
* Avoid caffeine and alcohol before your service. They can make the skin extra sensitive.
* Follow the home care advice given after your service. * Make sure the waxer is wearing gloves and is not “double dipping.” Once a stick has been in the wax, it should be discarded.
* Discuss any health issues or medications you are taking to be sure waxing is safe for you.

THE COSMETIC COUNTER
What is your skin type? By Cassie Brewer
U
nfortunately, not every cosmetic company provides a wide enough range of shades to meet the needs of every skin tone. However, some lines do offer a pretty broad selection.
Affordable Makeup Brands with Great Foundation Range. For example, Clinique offers 22 shades of their Superbalanced formula and 30 shades of their Even Better Makeup SPF 15. Mac is another personal favorite, with their Studio Fix Fluid SPF 15 coming in an impressive 30 shades! Finally, drugstore brands like Maybelline’s Fit Me Foundation comes in 18 colors, and L’oreal True Match comes in 33 different shades! 14| Trade Secrets | 2015 Volume 3 | tradesecrets.com | 401.353.4940
Fair/ Beige -- Typically this skin type burns, but on rare occasions, can tan. However, it’s not advisable. SPF 30 daily should be a part of every fair skin routine. Olive -- You probably tan pretty well, but you can still burn. Don’t forget proper sun protection, of at least SPF 15-30. Medium brown -- You tan well and a wide range of colors look great on you--you rarely look washed out. However, don’t forget your SPF 15 to prevent sun damage and premature wrinkles! Rich Brown -- Skin will tan easily without burning. You might have brown or hazel eyes. Even though it may seem silly (you tan so well, you make everyone around you jealous) don’t forget your sunscreen, too! SPF 15 should do the trick. Mahogany/ Espresso -- You never burn, and you can tan very quickly. However, SPF 15 in a moisturizer is important for you.
Find Your Skin Tone
Most complexions can be broken down into the following categories, which encompass a subset of shades: pale, fair, olive, medium brown, rich brown, or mahogany/espresso. If you don’t know where you land on the spectrum, the following guide should help! Pale -- This type burns easily and doesn’t tan at all. Instead, it just turns red and angry. If this describes you, you’re likely to have lighter hair and eyes, although this isn’t always the case. Perhaps you freckle. For this skin type, it’s imperative that you wear a high SPF moisturizer or sunscreen everyday-even when it’s overcast. This will help you avoid sun damage and early signs of aging.

Sunscreen for Everyone!
If you’ve noticed a recurring theme in this article, it’s this: wear sunscreen. Period. Skin tone doesn’t matter... sun damage can happen to anyone. Whether you prefer physical or chemical iterations, find a brand and sunscreen formula that’s right for you.
Skin Type: Oily, Dry, and Combination
If you have oily skin, Neutrogena Dry Touch might be a great option.
Dry skin? Several Aveeno moisturizers contain sunscreen, protecting you from UV rays while nourishing skin with soy complex and other goodies.
Have combination skin? Paula’s Choice might be your answer.
Don’t hesitate to ask your local drugstore or department store beauty expert for recommendations. And if you can, experiment with free samples before you buy. Hopefully, this guide helped! What’s your favorite foundation and/or moisturizer? Let us know your thoughts!

PURSUITS
Waking Up: Caronah Cassell By Emy LaCroix
F
or many people, hearing the word“cancer brings their world to a grinding halt. Feelings of helplessness, fear, and distress can be overwhelming. But Caronah Cassell felt a different sensation - motivation. When Cassell was diagnosed with breast cancer, something within her awoke, pushing her to follow her dreams. Those dreams led to beautiful designs filled with color, excitement, and life. 26 | Trade Secrets | 2015 Volume 3 | tradesecrets.com | 401.353.4940
Her desire to share this zeal for life is shared in her garments - unexpected flashes of color, lively plumes of tulle, and curve-hugging metallics - all to help women feel the same about their bodies as Cassell feels about hers - thankful. While cancer may have been the catalyst for Cassell to push her design company - Caronah Cassell Designs forward, she knew at a young age that she wanted to make clothes. Perhaps this was influenced by her mother, who instilled a mantra she couldn’t forget. TS: Where are you from, and how has your childhood influenced your life and personality? CC: I’m from Providence, R.I., my parents are from Liberia, West Africa - Mr. & Mrs. Ernest & Berline Cassell. Due to my culture and lifestyle, you always had to dress nice and presentable when you leave your house, my mother always said, “Dress for success.”
TS: Tell me about your journey into fashion design. CC: Well, in high school, I had annual fashion shows, and then I went on to college to receive a dual degree in Fashion Design and Fashion Marketing from American Intercontinental Univerisy Atlanta, G.A. TS: Did you always know in your heart that this is what you wanted to do? CC: I always knew as a child. At the age of five, my father bought my first pair of heels, which I used to dress up and walk around the house in. I started to make my own clothes at a young age and loved making dresses and hair bows. When times got hard for Cassell, two things drove her forward: a desire to be a strong role model for her son, and knowing that God was watching over her, helping her along.

TS: How has your battle with cancer and being a survivor influenced your life and your designs? CC: Well, being a breast cancer survivor has made me find my purpose in life, to become one of the greatest fashion designers. When I was first diagnosed, it was four days before my wedding, which was also interrupted by Hurricane Irene, but I still got married. My cancer awoke me; it made me realize what my purpose in life was, being told by my doctor that they caught it in time; I might have had only have two years to live. After hearing those words, it was as if a ticking time bomb went off inside of me. That gave me the drive to be successful. I wanted to teach my son he should always follow his dreams and passion. I do give all my success to God who has blessed me and loves me unconditionally. Her son has also helped inspire some of Cassell’s designs, along with other things she encounters in life. But, it is the fabric she finds that speaks the loudest when designing a new garment. TS: How would you describe your aesthetic, and where do you get your inspiration for your designs? CC: Well, my inspiration can literally come from anything, like a painting, going to an exhibition, or just playing with my son. TS: What does your design process look like? Do you start with an idea, the fabric, etc? CC: I know this might sound crazy, but I start off with the fabric. I let the fabric speak to me. (laughing) When I find the right fabric then my vision flows until I create your masterpiece. TS: Who is your ideal client? What kind of woman wears Caronah Cassell Designs? CC: I make custom clothes for every women, body type, shape or size. A woman who has elegance and class, who wants to make a statement, a woman who just feels good about her size and shape, a woman who has confidence, grace and wants to let the world know who she is... That’s EVERY woman! While Cassell is helping strong women feel good about themselves through her clothing, she has two strong women helping her at home, her
mother and her sister, who have helped make her dream a reality.
TS: How has becoming a fashion designer changed your life? CC: At times it’s been hard balancing career and family; thank God I have my Sister Tracey who picks up my son from school daily and my mother who helps a lot. TS: What has been the hardest part of becoming a designer? CC: I really don’t have anything; but I can say the hardest thing is be unique in your style and creating one-of-a-kind designs. TS: Where do you see yourself five years from now? CC: In five years I see myself on top of the world... laughing...a successful businesswoman! Caronah Cassell wants all women to be able to feel the sense of empowerment that she has created for herself, and she believes that all it takes is a little self-confidence and faith, “My best advice to give to someone looking for their passion in life is to have FAITH, STRENGTH AND BELIEVE IN YOUR DREAMS. IT WILL COME THROUGH AND KEEP YOUR LOVE IN GOD. Only you make your path in this life.” If you want your very own Caronah Cassell Designs original, contact: Cassell on Facebook email caronah@yahoo.com or visit caronahcasell.com, coming soon

Bringing the Colors of Spring
Recapping the Spring Colors 2015 Fashion Show
I
t opened with a very catchy number by Janet Internacional to loud cheers and applause, as she danced, sang and gyrated on the 80 foot long elevated runway. Dressed to the nines. and with no shortage of sparkles, the audience consisted predominantly of Rhode Island’s Spanish community. And that’s how the Spring Colors 2015 Fashion Show began. Produced by Orlando Genao and Martha Villar, the show is in it’s fourh year and has been held at the Providence Marriott Downtown every year. 34 | Trade Secrets | 2015 Volume 3 | tradesecrets.com | 401.353.4940
After a quick wlecome address, by Orlando, the show started with a tall figure cloaked in a black hooded robe, and his face hidden, guarded the runway’s entrance as six similarly clad models, also in robes of different bright colors, measuredly walked down the runway. As the music reached a crescendo, they each whisked open their capes to show their beautfully bikiniclad bodies. Heading back to the top of the runway, they derobed the tall figure to show his well-muscled body in a pair of teeny-tiny swimming briefs, to thundering applause and cheers. | 401.353.4940 | tradesecrets.com | Volume 3, Issue 1 | Trade Secrets | 35
In quick successsion a “Pink Parade featured looks from Gennesis Boutique and Copa Boutique. The looks consisted of a colorful and varied spring collection that included florals, sports wear, one-piece jumpsuits and some swimwear. One formal dress featured was a fitted electric blue, mini dress with a woven cutout that swept around from the back and bore sheer sleeves. There was a beautiful peacock featherinspired dress, an animal print black and white sleeveless jump suit that would be suitable, both for work and an evening out, as well as another sleeveless jumpsuit that included sheer pants with a pair of boy shorts underneath. 36 | Trade Secrets | 2015 Volume 3 | tradesecrets.com | 401.353.4940
Some of the men’s wear from Copa Boutique included a, interesteing array of colorful blazers paired with various denim shorts and ripped jeans. One of the male models donned a dark brown blazer, coral shirt, white dress pants and a pocket square to finish off the look. Also in the lineup were a beautifully fitted baby blue suit and a bright green blazer over orange pants. | 401.353.4940 | tradesecrets.com | Volume 3, Issue 1 | Trade Secrets | 357
Copa’s choices of color were definitely not to the faint of heart, as the audience was treated to such combinations as grey suits paired with a purple bow tie on one look amd a pink shirt in another. Adding little edge was a model in a beige blazer, with his dress pants tucked, at the knee, into a pair of multi-colored striped socks. 38 | Trade Secrets | 2015 Volume 3 | tradesecrets.com | 401.353.4940
The second showing of the evening, featured pieces by Giannina Azar - a stunning lineup that featured bright neon colored swim wear, coverups and dresses with intricate luminous beading. Accesorized by pieces from Rosa de Cristal, the models wore large beaded drop earrings that added an extra element of elegance, and they looked resplendent as they sauntered down the catwalk. While some of the coverups included geometric patterns and sheer flowing fabrics, there were a series of short onesies, bejewelled around the waist, that were reminiscent of Arabian nights. | 401.353.4940 | tradesecrets.com | Volume 3, Issue 1 | Trade Secrets | 39
The final piece, worn by Miss Rhode Island USA 2015, Anea Garcia, was a sheer orange and white floor length gown that flowed and twirled around her long legs as she walked.

The last designer for the night was New Jersey based designer, Palferez Couture. Opening with two all white net-mesh dresses, constructed over a full bathing suit in one and boy shorts in the other, it quickly transitioned to an array of very elegant dresses, each more spectacular than the one before. Many of the dresses, cut to hug every inch of the body, tapered in a pencil skirt around the knee, and compelling the models to move at a very sedate pace. One of the showstoppers was an all black ensemble that consisted of a fitted lace top and a full floor length skirt that demanded attention. Another was a lovely sequin gown in white with a train that trailed deliciously. Overall, this is line a very flattering for any woman’s curves, making her feel sleek and sexy all at once. In all, there was a lot to see, and this fascinating evening had the audience thoroughly entertained.

An Apple a Day,
Does it Still Keep the Doc Away? By Nichole Rich, PhD.

ed Delicious, Golden Delicious, Gala, and Fuji. These might all be common to you but there are actually over 7,500 varieties of apples. It would take you almost 20 years if you decided to try to eat a different apple a day. The popular saying “An apple a day keeps the doctor away can be traced back as early as 1866. Where did this saying come from and does it ring true?

For starters, apples are known to contain high levels of pectin. Pectin is a form of soluble fiber, and as you may be aware, adding fiber is good for your digestive system. Pectin also assists in lowering blood pressure and maintaining healthy levels of cholesterol. Now let’s talk free radicals. These are substances that build up in your system in response to any kind of stress: injuries, illness, emotional stress, and environmental stress. Apples contain phytonutrients as well as quercetin that are helpful for reducing free radical damage in the body. Apples are also known as one of “nature’s dental floss.” It has been said that eating an apple after a meal will help clean out your teeth. If you do not have any store bought floss around reach for an apple.
add into your diet to lower your risk of diabetes, high blood pressure, and some types of cancer, the nutrients from this fruit alone will not serve to cure ailments. Apples are an attractive choice of fruit because they can last for more than 200 days beyond harvest if stored properly. It is recommended that you eat 3-5 apples per week and in addition, you will still need to add in other fruits to round out your nutrition program and to ensure that you are getting all of your essential vitamins and minerals. It’s important to be aware that with an increase in herbicides and pesticides being sprayed on our crops, the nutrients in apples can be compromised. Make your own fruit and vegetable wash by placing your fruit in a bowl of water and adding in 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar. Let soak, rinse, and then enjoy!
So with this nutrition information, is it safe to assume that an apple a day will keep you from making visits to the doctor? While apples are great to

A Healthier You! By Pleshette Vonner
T
here are many well-known quotes that can be applied to our health and wellness. One of my favorites from Benjamin Franklin is, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” So what lessons can we learn from Ben’s words, and how can prevention help toward the quest to better health?
50 | Trade Secrets | 2015 Volume 3 | tradesecrets.com | 401.353.4940
Good health is not just about treating illnesses, it also involves stopping illnesses and diseases before they start. Seven out of 10 deaths in the US are due to chronic disease (such as cancer and heart disease) and almost one out of every two adults has at least one chronic illness, many of which, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, are preventable. Prevention can be woven into many aspects of our lives. Here are some tips that can help you along the way to complement a healthier lifestyle:
To take a Multivitamin or not to take a multivitamin?
Vitamins and nutrients are essential for the body to function properly. Vitamins can be obtained in the foods we eat, however, often times we don’t eat enough to get the recommended daily amounts. Unfortunately the quality of our foods has diminished over the years, leaving our meats, fruits and vegetables even more nutrient-deficient. There is a correlation between present-day farming methods and how they affect the nutrients
There is a correlation between present-day farming methods and how they affect the nutrients in the foods we consume, so the answer is to take a multivitamin.
Everybody dance now!
Find the right exercise for you and get active. Daily physical activity is important for your health, vitality and energy. Get in at least 30 minutes of cardio a day. Go line dancing, go to Zumba, Hip-Hop or ‘Oldies but Goodies’ night. You can also go walking, jogging or swimming. Find a fun hobby that keeps you engaged, fit and active!
No, I don’t want to SUPERSIZE that!
Moderation and portion control are the keys to better health nutrition. Deprivation can lead to frustration, which may lead to sneaking or cheating with the “bad” foods or binge eating. Healthy eating is not all about strict limitations. It has a lot to do with balance, lifestyle choices and planning. Strive to read the labels and know what you are eating. Pack some healthy snacks when

you are on the go and eat lean proteins, fruits and vegetables. Small changes to what you eat can make a big difference.
Did you order a Toxic Audit!
It’s not just what you put into your body but it’s also what you put on your body and what you breathe into your body. Be sure to check the ingredients in your foods, household cleaners and bath and body products. Some can be loaded with preservatives, harsh abrasives and toxic chemicals that may cause major health issues. Audit those cabinets and you’ll be surprised what you’ll find!
Know your Stats!
Stay up to date on annual examinations and recommended health screenings. Know your stats! What are the healthy ranges for your age, gender and weight? What are your weight, blood pressure, cholesterol and blood glucose levels? If those numbers are abnormal, find out ways from your doctor to improve them. Consulting with a nutritionist or fitness coach may also be helpful.
Mind, Body and Soul!
Mental, emotional and spiritual well-being all affect your health! Take time for yourself. Do things that you enjoy. Be ok with saying no sometimes, you can’t do everything. Reduce your stress levels. Take time to be quiet, meditate or pray, and remember, it can’t be all work and no play!
“It is easier to stay well than to get well!”
Let’s get moving to better health and be proactive! I will leave you with this simple quote by an unknown author, “It is easier to stay well than to get well!”

A WINK FROM ITALY
The Culture of Dressing Up for Dinner By Cinzia Antonelli
T
he choice of eveningwear for dinner is a real culture that inspires and excites our imagination so intensely, that we immediately begin to design the most original and dazzling outfit to show off for the occasion.
54 | Trade Secrets | 2015 Volume 3 | tradesecrets.com | 401.353.4940
become indispensable and a valuable support with their many styling tips. But beyond the fashions of the moment, the basic rule for all of us, is to dress in a manner appropriate to the place and context in which we find ourselves, so as not to arouse embarrassing looks if, for example, we choose to wear clothes too extravagant and flashy. The basic rule for a compelling choice, in terms of style and elegance, is always simplicity. We Italians often say “appearances are deceptive,” but the clothing comes to us, brings out our features and our way of living. If we want to be clean, in our style, then we have to follow some of the basic rules of good taste, or as they say in Italian “Bon Ton.” For example, a man is not considered elegant when he displays excesses in his style. Simply choose the right attire, a matching pair of socks and no unnecessary jewelry, out side of the essentials like a wristwatch, wedding ring and cufflinks. For the women, the rule is to enhance the shape of our body, without wearing anything vulgar, or overly sexy. Forget the terrible leggings and avoid an Today, fashion is a kind of redefinition of the traditions of the past, which has been somewhat sanitized through customs that were sometimes rigid in accordance with the rules of a strict dress code for the evening. However being in perfect harmony with our eveningwear is always a great test of our own personal style. It doesn’t matter whether we are attending a cocktail party, a gala, a business dinner or a simple evening with friends, knowing how to choose a dress to meet expectations is, for us, a source of great excitement, but with a dash of concern. Going out in the evening is an occasion when we want to show our conviviality, but above all to show our stylish clothing. This is the time where we get to show the best of ourselves, in some sort of coded message that communicates through our choice, evidenced in the clothes we’re wearing. When choosing how to dress, in this particular context, it is not always an easy task. Often we consult numerous fashion magazines, which have | 401.353.4940 | tradesecrets.com | Volume 3, Issue 1 | Trade Secrets | 55
embarrassing evening. Choose instead, to pay tribute to your feminine touch with elegance and sobriety.
For women, the new maxi jacket, presented by LANVIN Paris is a must, and can be worn as a mini coat on warm summer evenings.
Definitely, with great foresight, you preserve your choice of accessories, such as your bag, and that will surely be a jeweled clutch. The shoes will be high, to slim the figure, and make you feel like the true queen of the evening. If possible, you could match the color of the shoe to the dress. For the icing on the cake, the jewels, showy and glittering, large necklaces in pearls, diamonds and colored gemstones, are combined with bracelets and earrings. Every year, even for this spring-summer season of 2015, all the best designers have made their masterpieces for the catwalks, from which we can draw inspiration. All styles are current, replicated in the updated version, with innovative cutting-edge pieces.
The maxi dress by Roberto Cavalli, is meant for women of spirit. While the dress by Marc Jacobs, is most appropriate. Even on display on the runway for the season, are the square shapes of Max Mara and Versace. Sometimes the rules are broken, and for the lovers of leather, like me, with the black jacket, there is a cleaned-up version that is stylish to wear in the evening by Diesel Back Gold. There is a new desire for freedom, and this summer, the free-flowing spirit can be spotted, wearing fringes for a hippie look - like Dolce & Gabanna’s fringed poncho. For romantic women, the best thing to wear is the beautiful romantic dresses rich in precious lace.

Even for him, the runways of the season are full of valuable masterpieces, to embellish his looks, in all kinds of styles. The male wardrobe for the evening is obvious to the elegant man; discreet, charming, intelligent and over all, fun and modern. While Zegna’s runway represents the elegant and refined man, it also offers a style that is a little more easy, trendy and cool. And in his exclusive dresses, the elegance of Giorgio Armani is always impeccable. In Calvin Klein, the mood is very simple, and where you will find some color here, Prada instead, offers a timeless elegance. The men on the runway are a blast from the past with a style that says, “I’m unique!” At last, we’re ready for our long-awaited evening, surely we’ll be the most beautiful at the party!

THE BUZZ
Reality TV vs. Scripted TV: Who Wins in the Rankings?
By Jaclyn Pelopida
I
t seems like everywhere we look nowadays, reality television has taken over, (partially in thanks to the Kardashian family). Reality TV stars are just as famous as scripted television actors, and usually they’re the ones we read about in the tabloids each week. Whether it’s a story about a jail sentence from one of the women of “The Real Housewives of New Jersey,” or a gay slur heard around the world on “Duck Dynasty,” it seems that reality TV is taking precedence to scripted TV. 60 | Trade Secrets | 2015 Volume 3 | tradesecrets.com | 401.353.4940
Although scripted TV has been around long before reality TV, it would surprise some that reality TV has been around a lot longer than we actually think. “Candid Camera,” America’s original reality TV show premiered in 1948! One of the first reality TV shows that hit airwaves in 1992 brought a whole new meaning to the world “reality.” “The Real World,” MTV’s longest-running show to date is about seven strangers, picked to live in a house and see how their lives change, all on camera, all unscripted. This began the trend of reality TV as it was something new, something controversial, and something that pushed the boundaries of anything else that was on TV at the time. Soon after the success of “The Real World,” (which just wrapped up its 30th season in March), more and more reality shows began to take flight on networks that were primarily showing scripted TV shows. Shows such as “Survivor,” “The Bachelor,” “The Amazing Race,” “American Idol,” and “Celebrity Apprentice,” just to name a few, began edging out the competition on a nightly ranking of all TV programs. The world became fascinated with watching reality TV by the mid 2000’s as more and more reality shows began popping up on cable stations everywhere, (the king of reality shows being MTV Networks).
As reality TV surged in the rankings, pop culture ate it up like it was cotton candy. Tabloid magazines and entertainment news shows were constantly reporting on what was going on in the reality TV world. Reality shows have become so big over the last decade, that celebrities found it was a great way
to keep them relevant and rich. Britney Spears and her ex-husband Kevin Federline debuted a fiveepisode series on the UPN network in May 2005 called “Britney and Kevin: Chaotic.” Thinking at the time, this might have been good idea since Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey had reached a whole new status of celebrity with their reality hit show “Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica,” on MTV from 2003-2005, Spears could not have been more wrong. Critics slammed the reality show calling it career suicide, and that’s exactly what it was. With “Keeping up with the Kardashians,” premiering it’s’ 10th season in March on E! Network, it seems that reality TV is not slowing down anytime soon. Although reality TV might be what everyone is ranting and raving about, scripted TV is far from floundering. Award shows have barely accepted the fact that reality shows can be accounted for just as many scripted shows, as they don’t recognize any reality shows for Emmy’s or Golden Globes Awards, and rightfully so. Scripted shows require talent, hard work, brilliant actors, screen writers, directors, producers and so forth. Hence, the argument that reality shows are just talentless people living their daily lives in front of a camera.
genre that outweighs the other. New scripted and reality TV shows are premiering each season and the ratings remain high for each type of program; showing that neither reality TV nor scripted TV will ever go out of style.
Some of the oldest scripted television shows are still running in their 16th season with no signs of slowing down. Shows such as “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,” and “NCIS,” have all been on the air for well over 10 years. Even with 16 seasons behind them and counting, “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” has held steady as one of the top 10 mostwatched shows weekly. Now that’s something that reality TV cannot beat. According to TV Guide’s Most Popular Shows for the month of March and April 2015, “The Bachelor,” is the only reality TV show that remains in the top 10 weekly. Other shows including, Fox’s newest smash hit “Empire,” and “Gotham,” remain constants in the top 10 most popular shows weekly, as does ABC’s “How to Get Away with Murder,” and “Scandal.”
“Although scripted TV has been around long before reality TV, it would surprise some that reality TV has been around a lot longer than we actually think.”
Although the current battle of reality vs. scripted TV shows might be leaning more towards scripted television for this year, there will never be one 62 | Trade Secrets | 2015 Volume 3 | tradesecrets.com | 401.353.4940
PRIME CUT
Healthy Heart, Healthy YOU
By Elizabeth Phinney | Video by Valencio Small
C
ertainly in this day and age, you have heard the expression, “come from your heart and not your head.” The symbol of love is a heart. “We ‘heart’ New York” is the state’s slogan. When we point to ourselves, we typically point directly to our heart. 64 | Trade Secrets | 2015 Volume 3 | tradesecrets.com | 401.353.4940
“Click the picture to learn about how to measure your heart rate” What is it about the heart that makes it so sentimental? So much a symbol of our emotions? A symbol of who we are? Perhaps, because when it stops functioning, we die within a very short period of time. We need the heart to pump blood throughout our body, which carries all the nutrients and oxygen to our various organs and tissues so that they, too, may survive and thrive. It is the one organ that is literally connected to all the others because of this flow of blood. When the heart is malnourished or sickly, it cannot function at its peak potential. This, unfortunately, is what happens to over 30% of the American population who have been diagnosed with heart disease. And, the saddest part of all is that 80% of these diagnosis are preventable. If your chances of dying of heart disease are most likely preventable, why is it the number one killer of men and women? These facts are directly related to the obesity epidemic we have in this
country, and growing throughout the world. We literally are what we eat and what we are eating is simply not good for us. Therefore, to dramatically reduce your odds of a heart disease diagnosis, you need to maintain a reasonable weight for your height. Eating more vegetables rather than simple carbohydrates found in flour and sugar will certainly help with this plan. Reducing your meat consumption and increasing your fish as protein will also help. The most important thing to remember is that the options are available to you for healthier choices for your heart, but it is up to you to make the commitment to yourself to make those choices. An important fact we often forget about the heart is that it is a muscle. As with all muscles, it needs to be exercised to be strong and stay strong. And, don’t forget that when we lose ½ lb. of muscle tissue every year beginning in our early 30’s, (see Trade Secrets, April article on “No More Stiff Joints!”) the heart as a muscle is in that loss.
| 401.353.4940 | tradesecrets.com | Volume 3, Issue 1 | Trade Secrets | 65
Aerobic exercise is the best way to keep your heart muscle strong for decades to come. According to the American College of Sports Medicine, the foremost authority in the fitness industry, aerobic exercise should be done a minimum of 5 times per week, getting your heart in your own “moderate intensity aerobic zone” for a minimum of 30 continuous minutes each time. Or, for the more vigorous exerciser, 3 times per week for a minimum of 25 minutes in your more vigorous zone. If you need to lose weight, the suggestion is 50 – 60 minutes per day. If you are just beginning, start slow for shorter times. Then, first increase the duration before you increase the intensity. Build up to where you want to be. To determine your moderate vs. intensive heart rate, take your resting heart rate (RHR) before you get out of bed in the morning for 3 mornings to get an average. (Either on your wrist or on the carotid artery, count the number of times your heart beats straight for an entire minute.) Then impose the average RHR in this formula: 220 - your age – your RHR = X. Now multiply X by 50%, 60%, 70%, 80%. To each number you get, add your RHR back on to it. Then, the numbers in the 50% - 60% range are considered your moderate targets. 70% - 80% are your more vigorous ranges. That means, when you are exercising, you take your heart rate after 10 minutes to see how many times per minute your heart is beating. (For this check, just count for 10 seconds and multiply by 6.) That will tell you to either slow down or go faster. You want to check your heart rate every 10 minutes or so, or, better yet, invest in a heart rate monitor!
As for what kind of exercise to do for aerobic exercise, there are many to choose from. Walking is a great way to start, just make sure that your pace is giving you enough of a workout and that your heart is pumping in your preferred range. Running is not recommended unless you are not overweight at all and you begin by walking fast and getting your body into the mechanics of running before you try it. Injury is too easy when you are running and your body isn’t ready to do it. Otherwise, if you research “kinds of aerobic exercises” on the Internet, you will be presented with a multitude of choices. The thing is, you need to find something that you enjoy doing or you simply won’t do it. Remember, aerobic exercise along with healthy food choices will help your heart and your body get and stay much healthier and stronger for years to come.

CINZIA ANTONELLI resides with her husband, Gianfranco DiMarco, and their 14-year-old daughter, Enrica, in the little town of Cassino, Italy. Inheriting her creative and artistic flair from her father, a painter, and her grandfather, a novelist, she grew up with a love for fashion, and a passion for creating costume jewelry.
