Lulu Amirault is currently double majoring in Classical Civilization and Communications (a weird combination, she knows) at UMass Amherst, but still considers herself a Providence girl. She has lived in Providence all her life, and loves that it’s currently getting recognized for it’s amazing food, being that food and Providence are two of her biggest loves. In addition to being a communications intern at Donahue Models and Talent, she loves listening to the New Music Friday playlist on Spotify, photography and filmography, and attempting to keep a journal. For some reason, she can’t seem to stop watching The Office or Arrested Development. Lulu really likes keeping up to date in the latest fashion and make up trends through YouTube, and is honestly as obsessed with highlighting as any other make up lover. She really loves traveling; so far Lulu has been to Japan, France, Costa Rica, Mexico, and Canada, but hopes the list continues to grow. In the coming year, she’s most excited for her semester abroad in Mexico with her family. If you were wondering what her Starbucks order is: grande iced caramel macchiato (with the occasional chocolate cake pop). If you were wondering what her Dunkin order is: medium iced latte with skim milk and two sugars (don’t ask her why the skim milk, it was a spur of the moment decision three years ago and she is a creature of habit). Lulu’s friends tell her she is witty, exuberant, and kind, so clearly that means they’re great friends who see the best in people.

n an age where patriotism has become paramount, it is impossible to ruminate upon our freedoms as Americans without reflecting on our past. The liberties we enjoy today were paid for by those who bravely went before us and fought for those rights. In North Kingstown, RI, there are very tangible reminders of history.

Imagine being able to peer into the cockpit of the A4 Skyhawk test model, or stand next to an F-14 Tomcat, just like the one made famous in the hit movie Top Gun. While just the thought may seem fantastical for aviation enthusiasts of all ages, this was indeed possible for many years in Rhode Island. Quonset Air Museum, the location of this shoot, and home of dozens of aircraft that transported our military through both war and peaceful times is no longer open to the public. The building was originally constructed in 1945 as a US Naval Air Station hangar and used in WWII as a paint shop. Dedicated in 1992, the site became a casualty to the record-breaking winter of 2015. After the roof collapsed and made the structure unsound, those at the museum worked feverishly to preserve thousands of artifacts of an era gone by. While the centerpieces of the museum are the various aircraft, many private and commercial collections were also on display. Blueprints, manuals, uniforms and photographs were also housed in this facility to depict the Ocean State’s contributions to aviation history. Unfortunately, time is now running out for where these relics can safely remain. Prior to the condemnation of the building, several pieces were in the process of restoration. A Bell UH-1 Huey, also known as a “Gunship Mike” which saw Vietnam War time, made its way to Quonset and was being refurbished by a family who understood the importance of its preservation. Without a new home to go to, these irreplaceable planes sit helplessly in abeyance on the Tarmac. The directors of the non-profit Air Museum retain a glimmer of hope that they will be able remain in Quonset, perhaps on a nearby parcel of land. Naturally, such a move requires money that the 501 C-3 does not presently have in its coffers. The procurement cost alone of the proposed building hovers around the $4 million mark. To be back up and running as a venue, another $16 million is needed. The directors took their appeal to the Rhode Island legislature last year. Despite visits to the present location and a genuine concern for the perpetuation of the museum, requests for state aid were denied. In a state with a struggling economy and a budget where every penny is counted, non-profits have the very difficult task of pitching 16 - Trade Secrets: June 2016 Edition
their appeals to the discretion of the General Assembly. Without the promise of legislative grants or governmental intervention, the museum is fervently seeking other avenues to raise funds for this now dire situation. The exploration of possibly collaborating with other investors with a passion for transportation history is underway. Perhaps a ‘rebirth’ of sorts would be necessary to create a competitive attraction. If the planes, missiles, and other articles were displayed alongside classic vehicles, for instance, the new museum could in fact become a world-class tourist destination for visitors seeking an opportunity to step back into time. Each year, tens of thousands of spectators flock to the Quonset Air Show, which takes place just steps away. If the directors can raise the needed funds to relocate on Quonset, it would unquestionably be a boom to the local economy. Surely one could envision what a thrill it would be to see history come to life in a building with hands-on exhibits. It wouldn’t take long for schools and organizations from across the region to book educational field trips, and parents would have another option on school vacation days. Nostalgic seniors could come and relive memories... Before any of this can even be conceptualized, however, the museum needs help-- and quickly. Demolition of the building is imminent, and the relocation of the birds is somewhere in the ballpark of $20,000 per plane. Perhaps someone or some entity reading this article will recognize the value of preservation, and have an idea as to how to help. In an age where viral campaigns raise hundreds of thousands of dollars literally overnight for (sometimes questionable) causes, surely an appeal like this wouldn't fall upon deaf ears. If the legislature-- and Congressional delegation-- see a public outcry for assistance, then perhaps they too will be able to take a second look at funding. For more information about the history of the museum and the collection of aircraft, visit www.quonsetairmuseum.com and be sure to check out Quonset Air Museum on Facebook for the latest updates.

The Right Way to Layer Your Skin Care Products
O

ne of the most frequently asked questions I get in my practice is the order of usage when it comes to skin care products. The order matters so that you can get the maximum benefit from the products you have invested in.

CLEANSer Use a liquid based cleanser that can easily wash or wipe off. This obviously removes dirt and excess oil from the skin, but I also recommend doing a “double cleanse” at night.. Cleansing twice ensures the skin is clean, especially if you wear makeup.
Exfoliate This step physically sloughs off dead surface skin cells. Your serums and moisturizers will work harder because they are sitting on live cells instead of dead surface cells.. and your makeup will look better!
Toner Toner rebalances the pH of the skin after cleansing. It also acts like a “rinse cycle” for the skin. If you live in an area where the water is mineral-rich, that “tight” feeling you might get after cleansing could very well be from the mineral deposits left on your skin from your water.
Eye makeup remover Always remove all traces of eye makeup with an eye makeup remover. Hold a saturated cotton square over your lashes for a few seconds. Then swipe down.
Spot Treatment If you use an acne spot treatment for blemishes, dab on the areas and let the skin absorb it for a few seconds.

ng skin care routine takes less than 5 kin and it will reward you by looking iant and youthful!
Serum Serums address various skin concerns. Some are highly active with acids for the repair of the skin for concerns such as discoloration, lines, and wrinkles.. while others soothe and calm irritated skin with ingredients such as green tea. Serums have a light molecular weight to enable quick absorption into the skin which boosts their efficacy. Gently pat onto the skin.
Eye Cream Always use products made for eyes around the eyes. With the ring fingers, dab eye cream on the orbital bone around eyes. The heat from your eyes will draw the moisture where it is needed.
Moisturizer After the serum is absorbed into the skin, apply your moisturizer. Generally speaking, a night cream tends to be heavier because it is designed to be absorbed over the course of the night. A day cream is typically lighter.
Sun Protection Physical sunscreens offer the best protection for the skin. They work immediately so they don’t need to be applied before sun exposure. Physical suncreens work by deflecting the sun rays off the skin. A good way to visualize this: Imagine you are holding a mirror on your face facing the sun. The rays will bounce off the mirror. Look for titanium dioxide and zinc oxide in your sunscreen. Unfortunately, sunscreens in foundations are not considered strong enough for adequate sun protection.

Ways to Look Pretty, Polished, and Professional

N
ow that the warm weather is slowly making its way to New England, it’s time to pull out our shorts from storage. What comes to mind when you think of shorts? Cut-offs? Daisy Dukes? Frayed? Bleached? Distressed? Denim shorts are the core of our summer wardrobe with an easy, casual feel & look good with almost anything, but the diversity goes way beyond denim. Almost every trend out there has taken on a life of its own, creating a twist on every variation & shorts are no different. The choices are enormous, so let’s take a closer look at all the shapes, fabrics & lengths shorts can offer. I was lucky enough to live in Bermuda to experience the beautiful beaches, great weather & a little bit of British life. This is where I was introduced to the “local office suit”. So you are wondering what that might be? Well, it’s in the name. In the 19th century, due to the unbearable heat & humidity, the officers were given permission to snip their trousers just above the knees. The Bermuda short was born & has become the official National Dress Code, so let’s start here! Bermuda shorts are so versatile, easy to style with practically anything & compliment every body type. Since they have a longer length, Bermuda shorts are a perfect transitional piece since it provides a bit more coverage. If you start with a long-sleeve, silk button-down

Of course! They are super flattering & make you look like you have legs for days. Stick to a wide-legged & loose silhouette for added modesty. Choose fun patterns such as polka dots, vibrant florals or super feminine lace. Adding a delicate or nude heel would maximize the elongating effect. Accessorizing Like A Pro by Shereen Russell-Ahmed
Summer is almost here and you recently bought some cute dresses and some lovely strappy sandals. But then you take a look at your jewelry box and immediately look away. You say to yourself, “I don’t know what to wear, I will continue to wear the diamond studs that I have worn every day for a year.” Boring! Wearing jewelry can be fun and jewelry definitely completes your look. As a jewelry designer, I have come to understand HOW to wear my jewelry and wear it well. Here are a few tips that I swear by: 1. Earrings are a must! If you don’t wear anything else, always wear earrings.
2. Don’t over accessorize. – meaning, your significant other bought you a necklace with matching earrings, a bracelet and a ring. No need to wear them all together. Just because they came in the same box, doesn’t mean they have to stay together forever.
3. If your outfit is really busy, then wear a simple chain and simple earrings.
4. Don’t be too matchy matchy (ie: Purple shirt, purple earrings, purple necklace) NO! 48 - Trade Secrets: June 2016 Edition
Out of the Closet
5. Grandma’s pearls don’t go with everything! I love pearls, but pearls are not for every day. Save your pearls for weddings, special occasions, and a last minute addition to your LBD – or Little black dress. 6. GIANT hoop earrings – Not for the work place. – SAVE it for the club girl! 7. You don’t need a ring for every finger (Hello 90’s)
8. If you are petite and have a tiny face, make sure your earrings are no longer than your chin. Don’t get lost in your jewelry.
9. High neckline, long necklace. Low cut shirt, a chunky or short chain will do just fine. 10. Last but not least, keep it classy, keep it simple. Take time to try on different pieces with your outfit. Jewelry should complement your look, not distract from it. Trade Secrets: June 2016 Edition - 49

Deep hues and voluminous silhouettes were the theme (save for a fitted cocktail dress with a gorgeously draped neckline) and untraditional color combinations gave the capsule collection upscale edge. Beautiful textures, including a laser-cut geometric pattern, imbued luxury and elegance.

From the Inside Out
clear out the clutter and dust behind the ears By Lynell Masterson

From the Inside Out
I recently took mindfulness class; it was part of the course curriculum for a degree program I am enrolled in. As usual I was surprised at what I had learned even though my foolishly cocky self secretly thought I could probably teach this class with my knowledge of all things related to mind, body and spirit. After the first class I quietly tucked my ego behind the entrance to the class and I actually sat and listened, that feisty ego comes up at the most inappropriate places. My biggest, simplest learning that changed the whole game for me: meditation or mindfulness is not about attaining clear and quiet minds, it is about NOTICING what is happening in the mind.
Trade Secrets: June 2016 Edition - 73
From From thethe Inside Inside Out Out Eh-hem, DUH. How could I NOT know this? I thought for years that was the “goal, that someday if I got better, I would be crystal clear. Quiet mind, no inner chatter. WRONG Why is this important and how can something as mundane as meditating change your entire life? Well, would you like to: Sleep better? Have less stress? Improve your eating habits to shed excess weight? Reduce pain? Get rid of anxiety? Have better mood regulation, which means feel happy more often? Have an improved focus on your goals? BASICALLY, feel a whole heck of a lot better???? This is where you can start.
74 - Trade Secrets: June 2016 Edition
From Fromthe theInside InsideOut Out The beginning of who we are begins with the way we think we are and therefore if our thoughts or cluttered and messy, most likely we will not outwardly display an organized appearance. Your beliefs become your thoughts, Your thoughts become your words, Your words become your actions, Your actions become your habits, Your habits become your values, Your values become your destiny. - Mahatma Gandhi If we are to clear out the clutter of our past, our so called baggage and also clean house, then we will also be able to live a full happy life. The way we begin to do this is by paying attention to what is in our head. Listening to the feedback loop of background noise. It’s called our subconscious mind and it is the driver of all our actions and beliefs. Often the thoughts we have are so flooded and fast and repetitive that we are not even conscious of what we are hearing. Developing a daily mediation practice helps us to begin to notice and pay attention to what exactly we are telling and believing about ourselves. In meditation we discover our inherent restlessness. Sometimes we get up and leave. Sometimes we sit there but our bodies wiggle and squirm and our minds go far away. This can be so uncomfortable that we feel’s it’s impossible to stay. Yet this feeling can teach us not just about ourselves but what it is to be human…we really don’t want to stay with the nakedness of our present experience. It goes against the grain to stay present. These are the times when only gentleness and a sense of humor can give us the strength to settle down…so whenever we wander off, we gently encourage ourselves to “stay” and settle down. Are we experiencing restlessness? Stay! Are fear and loathing out of control? Stay! Aching knees and throbbing back? Stay! What’s for lunch? Stay! I can’t stand this another minute! Stay! - Pema Chödrön
When talking about starting a meditation or mindfulness practice, most people say they cannot do it because they cannot clear their mind and they have no patience for it. Here’s the cool thing about a practice, it is not about being free and clear of all thoughts. All you need to do is notice and sit there while noticing. It sounds simple, right? IT IS. But it is not always easy; sitting in meditation can be one of the most challenging acts for many people, especially the ones with racing minds, which is probably most of the Western population. So this is why it is called a practice and considered one of the most important daily routines we can give ourselves to happier brighter days. Sitting through the feelings that are hard, the thoughts that are rampant and the sounds that are disturbing is exactly what is needed to learn how to exist and actually really like and enjoy this crazy thing called life. As a parting gift I am offering my VERY complicated instruction to starting your own practice and clearing out the clutter.
1. Sit down 2. Place timer on 10 minutes (that’s all you need to begin) 3. Sit & Notice (noticing thoughts, feelings, frustrations and temptations to bolt) 4. Get up and continue on your day 5. Repeat every day
I can guarantee that if you do this, you will begin to notice all the miracles in your life. (And if you have any questions…I would love to hear from you. Give me a holla. lynellmasterson@gmail. com)

A Wink From Italy
O
ne of the foods loved around the world and who represents us most is, without doubt, the Pizza! This delicious food is tasted in every corner of the earth with its many variants, depending on the place where it is prepared. Its origin is very ancient, dating back to about 3000 years ago when in ancient Egypt was a tradition to celebrate the Pharaoh, eating a kind of bun with aromatic herbs. Among the ancient Greeks were cooked “buns” and “Crush” of various kinds: the historian Herodotus has left us several recipes. In ancient Rome, Virgil, the greatest Roman poet tells in his literary works, that farmers used to grind grains of wheat or spelt. The flour as it was mixed with herbs and salt, forming round disks that were cooked on the hearth ashes. Pizza as well we Italian understand, was born in the early ‘800 in Naples, adding the two fundamental ingredients: Mozzarella and Tomato. The oldest of Naples pizzeria is “Antica Pizzeria Port’Alba” which since 1738 began churning out pizzas for the hawkers that were selling on their stalls, only later became a pizza restaurant with chairs and tables. The official birth of the real Neapolitan pizza came in 1889, when the Italian sovereign the King Umberto I and Queen Mar-

gherita went to Naples, on an official visit. Here the most famous pizza maker Raffaele Esposito, prepared for the sovereign three pizzas: pizza to Mastronicola (lard, cheese and basil), pizza Marinara (tomato, garlic, olive oil and oregano) and pizza with tomato and mozzarella whose colors remembered our Italian flag. The pizza that the Queen appreciated most was the latter, so for this reason, the pizza maker in honor of the queen, named the pizza Margherita. So after so much success the real Neapolitan pizza, won first Italy and then the rest of the world, when the first Italian immigrants in sec. XIX went to the USA. Here the first pizza was tasted in Italian neighborhoods in New York, Chicago, San Francisco and Philadelphia.
“The pizza maker, in honor of the queen, named the pizza Margherita.”
The secret of our piz-
za is the high quality of the products used in its preparation added to the great skill and ability of the real pizza chef, able to create a tasty dish, unique and highly digestible. For this purpose was born in 1984, the Academy of real Neapolitan pizza, which, with its precise rules, protecting the real pizza and original so that it may always be an authentic and certified product. The main rule that a pizza chef must follow regards the pizza dough, which should only be made with soft wheat, flour, yeast, water and salt, letting rise for at least 8 hours, must then be layed out by the use of hands. The ingredients for the dressing preferably come from the Campania region, such as buffalo mozzarella or a mozzarella, tomatoes can be fresh or peeled. type, The oil can be both extra virgin olive oil or just virgin olive oil, then it must be the oregano and basil. Finally for cooking obligatorily must be a wood oven with temperatures between 430-485 degrees for a period of 60 to 90 seconds. The wood used for the furnace must not emit smoke that change the flavor of the pizza itself, then you prefer oak, beech and maple. The pizza is one of the gastronomic products made in Italy, best known in the world, coming from our ancient culinary art and there-

For us Italians go out for a pizza, it has become a lifestyle, at dinner with friends or for lunch is always time for a delicious pizza! From North to South of Italy, there are many places where you can enjoy excellent pizzas, and many continue to be born every day! So in this occasion I’ll be able to talk about very few of the most characteristic. If you want to enjoy a deli-
cious pizza, baked with the best products of the “Campania Felix”, you need to go to the “Pizzeria la Notizia” in Naples, where you will be welcomed in a family environment. A Caiazzo, in the province of Caserta, you are drunk with the flavors, colors and smells of pizza at Pizzeria “pepe in Grani. If you want to eat pizza cooked in the oldest of Capri wood oven, go to the “Pizzeria Mammà”, here in addition to satisfying your palate, you will satisfy your eyes with the beautiful landscape that the island offers.
In the splendid setting of the Amalfi Coast, it stands the “Pizzeria il Convento”, in the village of Cetara where you can enjoy a wonderful pizza rich in Mediterranean flavors. And what about the famous “Pizzeria Sterita” a Materdei, the popular district of Naples! It ‘a piece of history because here was filmed the famous scene of Sofia Loren in De Sica’s film “The Gold of Naples” of 1954. ) For us Italian, Pizza is the real queen of our kitchen, how about ... we almost go out for a pizza?
