Bears San Diego A Social and Fundraising Organization

25th Anniversary Bear Pride Weekend October 19, 2019

Bears San Diego is a club for bears and bear fanciers. We are based in San Diego, California but we have members throughout the United States and even a few from overseas. Bears San Diego was established in San Diego in October 1994 when a need was recognized for a group who did not fit in with the main stream gays. In 2003 Bears San Diego took the next step and began our journey to become a Non-Profit 501(c)(3) charitable organization. We finalized the process in the summer of 2006 when Bears San Diego got it’s final approval from the Internal Revenue Service to do business as a Non-Profit Organization. Bears San Diego’s purpose is to bring together men of common interest on a social basis, providing events at a local bar, den night at member’s homes, outings to movies, restaurants, the zoo and parties with other Bear Clubs. These gatherings give participants the opportunity to actually meet other bears and admirers to create new friendships. Contact Info: Bears San Diego, PO Box 3151, San Diego CA 92163

Jerry Colinard Memorial Community Service Award Jerry Colinard was our first Mr. Bear San Diego in 1999. The contest was intended as a fun event at SunBears Weekend. Jerry took on the title of Mr. Bear San Diego as a way of giving back to the community. He organized events and fundraisers and helped raised thousands for charities, often putting up his own money in the process. Jerry was a long time AIDS survivor and was an advocate for himself and others living with HIV/AIDS. On July 4, 2009, Jerry lost his battle and passed away. Jerry will be sorely missed and will remain in our hearts forever. At BearQuake 2009, we established a Community Service Award to honor his accomplishments and recognize those in the LGBTQ community at large that go above and beyond to give back to our brothers and sisters in need. Isaac Weiner serves as a fully-professed Guard with the Asylum of the Tortured Heart, Inc., otherwise known as the San Diego Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. He currently serves as house treasurer and sits on the Board of Directors, but perhaps his most important job is to keep his “sister wife,” Sister Nora Torious, in check. He has been an activist in the San Diego LGBT community for more than 30 years. He is a proud member of Bears San Diego, and has served as Mr. So Cal Bear 2015-2016 and Mr. Bear San Diego 2013. I am also so proud to be a part of Bears San Diego, this amazing group that has given representation to an oftenmaligned group in our LGBTQ+ community, as well as being such an important and consistent source of funds for good causes. Good luck to all of tonight’s contestants, and congratulations to Bears San Diego on its 25th anniversary.”
