THE MANAGER

THE MANAGER

DARREN MOORE Good afternoon and welcome back to the Keepmoat Stadium. I would like to welcome Joey Barton, as well as the fans, staff and owners of Fleetwood Town. We head into today’s game in confident mood after good performances in our past three games, though we are a little frustrated at not having better results. We certainly came away from Blundell Park on Tuesday wondering how we had lost a game we had controlled for large periods - the stats clearly show us as having two thirds of possession and dominating chances. Their goalkeeper pulled off some great saves and they defended with real determination, and let’s be clear that we already have some very good players at this club. But we know we need more options up front and have been working hard this week to bring a striker into the club. I feel like my phone is glued to me ear when I’m not in training as we look to bring in the players we think can improve the squad. I know supporters are keen for updates, and I get asked the same questions at every press conference, but please trust that every single member of my staff gives their all. Please support the lads out there today, as your backing can really make a difference. I would like to wish the Belles well in their first competitive game of the season tomorrow as they take on Leafield Athletic. Enjoy the game.

THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE

CHIEF EXECUTIVE

GAVIN BALDWIN Good afternoon and welcome back to the Keepmoat Stadium for today’s second home game of the season. I’d like to welcome the supporters, owners, players and staff of the visitors who have travelled over for today’s game. There is certainly plenty of encouragement from the performances in the opening three games of the season, though we’ve been working hard alongside the manager to add to his attacking options. Today marks the annual Doncaster Pride event and Rovers are celebrating by flying the rainbow flag outside the stadium. The newly launched Rovers for All campaign reiterates the club’s dedication to being a club for everyone. Everyone at Rovers, and every area of Club Doncaster, are proud to support our LGBT+ community.

07 competitive game of the season tomorrow when they host Leafield at Oxford Street in Rossington. I’d like to wish them well tomorrow, and for next week when they play on the main Keepmoat Stadium pitch as they take on Sheffield FC. We’ve kept ticket prices low and I hope plenty of Rovers fans consider coming down and giving them your backing. Enjoy the game.

Over the summer we welcomed the famous Belles into the Club Doncaster family - they have their first

REECE JAMES The addition of Reece James in the summer meant that Rovers had brought in someone with plenty of experience at Sky Bet League One level.

Having won promotion from the third tier with Wigan Athletic in 2016, he reached the play-off final with Sunderland in his sole campaign with the Black Cats. He believes that the success in his career so far can benefit Rovers, as he looks to be a key part of a side looking to once again push towards the top end of the table. “There are a few lads who have won promotion from this level before like myself, and it’s important to have that in any dressing room,” he says. “It can help the squad with us having a few young players, when the going gets tough around Christmas you need that experience to get you through.

“I wanted to come here and make the left-back role my own, when I was at Sunderland there were three players battling it out for one position – with one of those being somebody who has played at a World Cup. “It was a tough ask but I went in and played a lot of games, but I felt the time was right for a change and was really excited about the challenge here.” After being signed by previous manager Grant McCann, James came into a club still searching for a new man in charge. The first time he met his new team mates was at Leeds Bradford airport before heading out to La Manga for the pre-season training camp.

“I’ve really enjoyed my time here so far it has been really good, all the boys have helped me to settle in well and that has been really nice to be a part of,” he says. “It was a bit different at first coming in without a manager here, but since Darren has come in he’s been brilliant with everyone. “I’d not really been in that position before so didn’t know what to expect, but meeting the lads to go to La Manga made things easier and I was able to spend some time getting to know them. “Everyone was in the same boat in terms of waiting for the new manager to come in, it was the whole squad who had to deal with it. “There were three of us who were signed but it helped us coming into an enthusiastic group who get on well. “I only really knew Tom Anderson before I came here but I’ve already clicked with the other boys and there is a good mix between youth and experience.” His year with Sunderland helped him to mature as a player and a person, with the pressure and expectation levels high in the north east. Being a part of it was something James enjoyed, but felt the time was right for a fresh start when the move to Rovers came about. “It was incredible to see what it’s like behind the scenes there particularly being the size they are and playing in League One,” he says.

REECE JAMES

“The support home and away was always good, we travelled to Gillingham on a Thursday night and had 5,500 fans there. “I had some really good times there and being able to play at Wembley was a dream come true, we couldn’t manage promotion but my aim now is to do it with Doncaster. “Having dealt with the atmosphere at the Stadium of Light every week it forces you to deal with the pressure and it was a good learning curve for me. “It definitely matured me and helped me to deal with other things that come my way for the rest of my career. Manager Darren Moore has added to his squad in recent weeks as he look to build a squad around the players already here. James believes one key piece of business was keeping Ben Whiteman, who was the subject of interest from the Sky Bet Championship during the transfer window. “Ben is a really good player and he was always somebody who stood out for the club last season especially in the big games. “It’s important to try and keep hold of players like him because he does parts of the game that can sometimes go unnoticed. “We’ve managed to keep him with us and it shows the quality he has got with him being named as the captain.

“We’ve got a god core group of players and I know the manager has worked hard to bring players in, and is still doing so.” Ahead of his competitive debut for the club on the opening day of the season, James faced a race against time to make the starting XI. Nine stitches in an ankle injury suffered in the final pre-season friendly against Hull City meant that the 26-year-old didn’t train leading up to the clash with Gillingham. “I had nine stitches in my ankle before the Gillingham game so I didn’t train at all going into that, which made it even more difficult,” he adds. “It was a big test to get through the game but I felt good once it was done, my foot was sore afterwards but there was no damage done. “It’s hard because just walking around was painful for me, but it was a situation where I was desperate to stay in the team. “I was using the painkillers and trying to manage myself throughout that period, and fortunately I was able to recover quickly. “My first appearance at the Keepmoat was really good, it was nice to sample that atmosphere for the first time. “The fans were great and they’re going to have a big part to play this season both at home and when we’re on the road. Even when we went behind in the game they stuck with us which as a new player is always great to see.”

ALEX

CAIRNS Doncaster-born Cairns started his career in the Academy at Leeds United and came on as a second-half substitute against Blackpool. That turned out to be the only time he would appear at Elland Road as he moved to Chesterfield then Rotherham. Cairns is now settled after joining Fleetwood Town in July 2016. Once breaking into their first-team he made his presence known establishing himself as their No.1 by making 130 competitive appearances for the Lancashire side.

ASHLEY

EASTHAM Eastham is no stranger to the West coast after rising through the ranks at Blackpool where he made his senior debut for the Seasiders during a 4-3 defeat to Premier League outfit Stoke City. From the end of that season he signed a two-year deal with the club after impressing his manager Ian Holloway. After that he accumulated seven loan spells, with one in 2012 being at Fleetwood Town for one month Once he was released from the Tangerines he was picked up by Keith Hill at Rochdale where he spent three years of his career commanding their back-line, then Fleetwood swooped him up after his contract expired.

IN OPPOSITION

15

PAUL

COUTTS He joined Fleetwood this summer fresh off the back after winning promotion to the Premier League with Sheffield United. The versatile midfielder has a wealth of experience under his belt, playing for six clubs spanning across a career which began in 2005. His longest spell at a club came at the Blades where he made 124 appearances for the club which included helping them rise from League One to the Premier League within three years.

PADDY

MADDEN The Ireland international joined Fleetwood for an undisclosed fee from Scunthorpe United in January 2018. During his League One career, Madden has scored 253 goals averaging at a goal every three and a half games. The Iron was where Madden had his most prolific spell as he netted a total of 52 times during his four years at the club. Madden earned a call-up to the Republic of Ireland squad in 2013 where he made a 69th minute substitute appearance against Wales during a friendly.

IN OPPOSITION

CHRIS NEAL GOALKEEPER Former Rovers manager Darren Ferguson drafted Neal into the squad in 2016 to provide competition for Thorsten Stuckmann and Marko Marosi. His loan was cut short by parent club Port Vale who required Neal’s services after their first-choice keeper Jak Alnwick picked up an injury. Neal’s contract at Vale expired in 2016 and he was quickly snapped up by Fleetwood who offered the keeper a twoyear contract.

16

DANNY ANDREW DEFENCE Andrew is now in his second spell at Highbury after initially joining the club in 2014 after they had just enjoyed promotion to League One. After making his way into the first-team he suffered a sucker-punch when broke a knee ligament on Boxing Day in 2014.

SHARED 5-A-SIDE club which led to his season-long loan at Fleetwood in August 2018 where he made a respectable 33 appearances.

The next season was struck off with a thigh injury before going on to spend a year with Grimsby Town in League Two.

MATTY BLAIR MIDFIELDER Blair joined Fleetwood in 2013 from York City. He went on to score against York in the League Two play-off semi-final and that earned him a start in the final at Wembley against Burton where Fleetwood went on to win 1-0.

His impressive form on the left of defence for the Mariners earned him a move to the Keepmoat Stadium. Injury again kept him out for most of his opening campaign, but he bounced back and was a key player in last season’s run to the play-offs.

A season at Mansfield followed for Blair but after one season he rejected a new deal in order to join Rovers who were aiming for immediate promotion from League Two - going on to help his new side secure a top-three finish.

JAMES HUSBAND DEFENCE The 25-year-old is one of Rovers Academy’s most successful graduates after he broke into the clubs first-team picture in 2012. Donning a Rovers shirt professionally for the first time against Middlesbrough where he helped his side keepp a clean sheet on his debut after replacing Shelton Martis in the second half.

He was crowned PFA League One Community Player of the Year in both 2017/18 and 2018/19 and in 2019 after taking up a key role off the pitch at the club.

Following the club’s relegation from the Championship, Husband joined the club he made his first appearance against for Curtis Main and a fee of £500,000. A move to Norwich City followed later down the line but he struggled to make an impression at the East Anglian

ALEX KIWOMYA FORWARD The Chelsea starlet was loaned out to three Football League clubs during his time in the Academy - spending time at Barnsley, Crewe and Fleetwood. Later he was to sign at three-year deal at the Keepmoat Stadium in the summer of 2017 but an almost career-ending injury kept him out of the side during his debut season. He returned to fitness last season and, after a loan spell at Chesterfield, has returned to the matchday squad this year.

IN OPPOSITION

PAST RECORD PAST PASTRECORD RECORD

There is little middle ground when it comes to Rovers’ matches with Fleetwood Town - five clashes ended up with a winning margin of at least two goals, while three encounters did not see either side break the deadlock. From a Rovers viewpoint the highlight was the 3-0 win at the Keepmoat Stadium in February 2017, which had a number of interesting storylines. The first is that it brought Alex Kiwomya’s first senior goal for Rovers as he opened the scoring against his former club. He slotted home from close range after 13 minutes for his first strike after missing the opening period of the campaign with the rare Guillain-Barre syndrome. The second and third strikes came from Tom Anderson, the only goals of his loan spell from Burnley - they remain his only goals here at the Keepmoat Stadium, though he has since gone on to add two more to his tally with efforts at Bristol Rovers and Preston North End last season. Headlines were also made after the match with the visitors sacking manager Uwe Rosler on the evening after the game. Rovers’ only other win over the Cod Army came in August 2015, when James Coppinger and Curtis Main helped seal a 2-1 success.

IN THE HOT SEAT:

DONCASTER ROVERS MANAGERS FROM 1920

DAVID MENZIES (1927-1936) Dick Ray’s successor was a man whose playing career had been modest but who already had sound managerial experience. David Menzies, a Scot from Kirkcaldy, had played without much distinction for Raith Rovers and Bradford City. He became assistant trainer at the latter club before moving to Hull City for seven years, five of which he served as manager. In 1921, he returned to Valley Parade as manager, resigning in 1926 to make way for Colin Veitch. When the Rovers job became vacant in the summer of 1927 Menzies jumped at the chance to return to football management. Menzies inherited an improving team and in his debut season, 1927-28, Rovers finished fourth in Division Three (North), the highlight being a nine-game winning streak between September and November 1927. Tom Keetley knocked in 36 League goals that season and did even better with 40 in 1928-29 as Rovers finished fifth. There were clouds on the horizon: in October 1928 Keetley demanded a transfer and when he threatened to quit football at the end of the season, the board reluctantly allowed him to move to Notts. County. Keetley was not the only player to depart, and although the sales brought in much needed cash, Rovers’ results suffered. Menzies and his team experienced three seasons in the lower half of the Division, with falling attendances at a time of economic difficulties making the manager’s task all the harder.

The fight back began in 1932, when Menzies appointed the long-serving Fred Emery as captain at the start of the 193233 season. The new skipper led Rovers to a much-improved sixth place. Menzies introduced youngsters such as Stan “Dizzy” Burton, Bert Turner and Ronnie Dodd. Fifth place in 1933-34 was followed by Rovers’ first ever Football League Title, when they won the Division Three (North) Championship in 1934-35. Perhaps Menzies’ greatest contribution was to persuade the board to spend money to sign the experienced Reg Baines from Sheffield United. The striker joined when results were tailing off and Rovers were having problems finding the net. Baines netted 21 times in 27 League games and helped secure the title. David Menzies’ charges made an impressive start to their Division Two campaign and they had a spell in second place just before Christmas 1935 before a run of poor results saw them slip back to mid-table. It still came as a massive shock when in February 1936 Menzies tendered his resignation in order to return to his old club, Hull City. He had been offered a substantial rise in salary and a long-term contract as Hull sought to climb away from the foot of Division Two. His departure was a huge blow to Rovers as he was a hugely liked and respected figure at the club. The directors and players both made presentations to him, and he left with a vote of thanks at a supporters’ club meeting. Sad to say, David Menzies’ second spell in charge at Hull did not last long. In October 1936, only months after leaving Belle Vue, he died suddenly from a heart attack. The man who had brought Rovers their first Football League divisional title was only 58, and his passing was greatly mourned in Hull and Doncaster. John Coyle

THE ACADEMY

Paul Stancliffe felt that the good fitness levels of his team played a vital role in the side’s 1-0 win against Notts County last Saturday. Jack Watson’s first-half strike fired Rovers to their second win of the season while Kian Johnson secured his first clean sheet of the campaign. It was another positive result after

demolishing Grimsby Town at Cantley Park a week earlier.

again, they proved to me that that was the right decision.”

Stancliffe said: “It was another really good performance from us. We had to dig deep in the end because Notts County gave a good fight.

The U18s return to Cantley Park today when they host local rivals Rotherham United (kick-off 11am). Stancliffe looked forward to coming up against them.

“Coming away from home in this division is always tough and it asks a lot of the players and our fitness levels shone through because we kept up our tempo all the way until the end.

He added: “Rotherham are a good side who will be a big test for us next week. There is that added bit of desire to do well with them being local rivals.

“It was an easy decision to name the same team that played against Grimsby because they all deserved it and yet

“We will be up for the challenge and beaming with confidence because of the last two results and that is down to how hard the lads have worked.”

Today we welcome the latest batch of young footballing talents to put pen to paper at the Academy as the U9s have signed their first schoolboy terms. The youngsters have been invited to the Keepmoat Stadium for the day, where they will be shown around prior to today’s game against Fleetwood Town. The schoolboys will be first shown around the stadium prior to kick off and the first stop will be the home team dressing room, where the boys will be presented with replica match kits freshly printed with their own surnames and signed by the firstteam staff and players.
They will then be taken pitch side, posing for photos and meeting

the manager before taking in the surroundings where they will one day hope to make their Rovers debut. Finally, as the first team walk out for their fixture, the boys will accompany the team as mascots before being presented to the crowd at half time. The young lads’ contracts will see

them work under the tutelage of the Academy coaches next season as they look to improve their skills and progress to the next level of their young careers. Please show your support at half time to ensure this is a day that the boys will never forget.

Hello everyone! Welcome to our game against Fleetwood Town and thank you all for coming to watch the game with me today. Doncaster Rovers have a one-off special edition custom made sofa signed by the 2019/20 playing squad which will be raffled off, with all proceeds donated to Bluebell Wood. KC Sofas, who are working in partnership with Doncaster Rovers for the current Sky Bet League One campaign, have provided all-new chairs and sofas for Donny Dog’s Kennel. One sofa has been held back with the cushions signed by members of the Rovers squad, which is to be raffled off for Bluebell Wood. The raffle will take place throughout August and the first week of September, with the draw being made on Saturday September 7 with the winner to be announced on September 9. Tickets are priced at just £1 and can be purchased online by clicking here, in store at the Club Doncaster Box Office, or with staff in the Club Doncaster Store. All proceeds of the raffle will go to children’s hospice Bluebell Wood, which supports children and young adults with illness’ and disabilities. To find out more about what they do, click here. Jamie Charnock of KC Sofas said: “This is a really exciting event for us, ever since we released the sofas we have had great feedback from not only the club staff, but also from fans who have said they are a great addition to the Kennel and around the stadium. “We hope that supporters really get behind the raffle and buy a ticket, it is a one-off special sofa and we hope to raise as much money as we possibly can for Bluebell Wood which is such a great cause that we are proud to support.” Fans can now purchase tickets by clicking here or can be bought online at tickets.clubdoncaster.co.uk, from the Club Doncaster Box Office or via the Club Doncaster Store.

SAFETY Three points is not the only priority today. Making sure everyone goes home safe is the most important result. Over recent months we have been working closely with the police and the EFL to review security at the Keepmoat Stadium. Now we are asking you to do your bit. It is vital that everyone - players, staff and supporters - remains vigilant and reports any concerns to stewards or police. Attacks might be rare, and the chance of you being caught up in one unlikely, but the message is ACT #ActionCountersTerrorism. Rovers safety officer Sam Ramsden said:

"We want everyone to enjoy today’s game at the Keepmoat Stadium but if you see anything that causes you concern, tell a steward or staff member. Please do not worry that you might be wasting our time. "The stewards are here to help keep us all safe so please be patient and cooperate with their instructions. When it comes to security it has to be a team effort and we are all players." Here's a quick reminder of what you can do to help keep yourself and others safe: • Arrive early, allowing more time for security checks • Minimise what you carry, fewer bag searches will speed up entry to the ground

• Be vigilant at all times and if you see anything suspicious, tell a steward right away • If you see anything that could pose an immediate threat to safety, call 999 • In an emergency, listen to the public address instructions and follow them • If told to evacuate, do so immediately, do not wait around to film events on your mobile • Move right away from the stadium as quickly as possible for your safety and to allow clear access for any emergency vehicles • Once you are safe, follow the local police force on Twitter for updates To find out more, visit gov.uk/ACT or @TerrorismPolice

DONCASTER ROVERS

SUPPORTERS LIAISON OFFICER

Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen and a warm welcome to the Keepmoat Stadium to the visiting fans from Fleetwood Town. At last week’s game we saw the ugly face of pyrotechnic devices rise its head once again following our equalising goal at Rochdale. Pyrotechnic devices such as flares, smoke bombs and fireworks are dangerous and it is a criminal offence to use these in football stadiums. Last season all 72 English Football League clubs signed up to a chairman’s charter with the EFL to tackle the use of these devices and to punish the people who use these devices. In conjunction with police forces around England, EFL clubs will take strong and decisive action against any supporter attempting to bring one of these banned items into a stadium. If a person is found to have used a pyrotechnic device consideration would be given to a prosecution and this will be followed by a three-year banning order from every stadium in the country being issued. I have spoken to many people regarding pyrotechnics over the years and surprisingly some people do not see any issues with these devices being used in stadiums. Someone has said to me before that no one ever gets hurt by them and I found this astonishing, many people

have been burned because of the use of these devices, including a 15-year-old at a Championship game last season. When having these conversations a story that pops into my mind was from a Rovers fixture several years ago where a smoke bomb was set off: following the game I was contacted by fan that was hospitalised for two weeks after inhaling this smoke, the supporter suffered from asthma and the smoke that was inhaled had a terrible effect on the person’s health and was close to being life-threatening. So just because the effects are not visible does not mean that they are not dangerous and they can even be life-threatening. I would therefore ask please do not bring pyrotechnic devices to games as you never know how it could affect our fellow supporters and everyone has the right to attend a football fixture and enjoy the match in a safe environment. For more information on the pyrotechnic charter please head over to the EFL website. As always I hope you all enjoy today’s game, if you have any questions then please contact me on the usual SLO social media accounts, @SLO_DRFC on twitter, DRFC SLO on Facebook or you can email me at dean. medcalf@clubdoncaster.co.uk. SUPPORTERS CLUB

SUPPORTERS CLUB A big warm welcome to all supporters for the second home game in the 2019-2020 season, let’s hope it’s as exciting as last year. Welcome to all the supporters from Fleetwood who have made the long trip across for today’s game, I hope they enjoy their day out with us and enjoy the Keepmoat Stadium experience.

We also welcome a new manager in Darren Moore, who played for us 22 years ago. His appointment has pleased the fans, and we look forward to having a successful season. Again this season we will be running coaches to all home and away games, the sheet with times and prices on are included in the programme but are subject to change. We have tried to keep the prices as low as we can but had to introduce a travel policy for under 16s who have to have a responsible adult travel with them. Fans who are 16-17-years-old need a consent form from their parents or guardians to travel. These can be downloaded from the Supporters Club website, on the bus or at the Supporters Club office based in the Club Doncaster Academy. Our next away game is at Bolton next Tuesday. Buses depart Retford 3.14pm, Harworth 3.20pm, Bawtry/ Rossington 3.30pm, Punches 3.35pm, Infirmary 3.45pm, Keepmoat Stadium 4pm. Fares are £17 adults and £15 concessions, add

£2 for non-members. Concessions is over 60 and under 18 this season. The next away game after that should be at Bury on the final Saturday of August, buses leave Retford 11.15am, Harworth 11.20am, Bawtry/ Rossington Styrupp 11.30am, Punches 11.35am, Infirmary 11.45am and Keepmoat Stadium 12noon. Prices are £17 adult members and £15 concessions. For fans’ safety we will be picking up on the inner circle adjacent to Car Park 2 this season, so you can leave your car there. You can join the Supporters Club on the bus and get discount straight away, or join online or at Supporters shop located in the Club Doncaster Academy. The price is £7 adult and £5 concessions. Call Paul on 07961727769 or Len on 01302 817347 for more details and bookings. As always we will run the home match bus from Retford, Harworth and Rossington Styrupp and Labour club, times are 1pm (6pm) 1.20pm (6.20pm) and 1.30pm (6.30pm). Times in brackets are night games, and there is no need to book.

Thanks to the fans and management from Rovers who attended the Main and North branch AGMs recently, both were well attended. Enjoy the game. And get behind the team. The Retford Branch AGM will be held from 7.30pm on Thursday September 19 at Retford United’s Cannon Park ground on Leverton Road. We hope to have representatives from the club’s management in attendance. All fans are welcome. Rovers Till We Die Paul Mayfield

VIKING SUPPORTERS CO-OPERATIVE Football is the national game, and football supporters are the lifeblood of the game. While many privately owned football clubs are well run, ours included, there are numerous examples over the years where this model of ownership has failed the supporters of that club, and has led to a number of clubs becoming either partly or fully owned by those supporters. The Minister Of Sport set up the Expert Working Group with the intention of looking at ways to improve engagement and dialogue between clubs and fans, and therefore to improve transparency and trust. The detailed recommendations from the EWG led to the government instructing the EFL and the Premier League to enter into structured dialogue with those supporters, and especially with the supporters trust at that club. As you may be aware the club hold two Meet The Owners events each year which meet the criteria set down by the EFL. On top of that the club have a Supporters Board which meets on a regular basis during the season to discuss a very broad range of topics. Suffice to say that DRFC have not only met the requirements but have exceeded them in both frequency and content, and that is something we can once again be proud of. Martin O'Hara

FOUNDATION UPD

Dozens of Rovers fans and participants from Club Doncaster Foundation got together to support a clampdown on troublesome littering with the help of Doncaster Council. Supplied by the local authority with gloves, litter pickers and bin bags, dozens of willing volunteers donated their valued time and effort to collect several bags of waste. Included in the group were youngsters taking part in the National Citizen Service (NCS) programme, delivered by Club Doncaster Foundation, to help spruce up the surrounding areas of the club’s Keepmoat Stadium home ahead of the start of the 2019/20 football season.

Councillor Chris McGuinness, cabinet member for communities, voluntary sector and the environment, said: “When we heard that supporters of Doncaster Rovers and members of the NCS scheme were undertaking a litter pick, we were only too happy to oblige by providing the equipment and then collect the waste once done. "The stadium sees a lot of footfall right throughout the week and we’re glad to be able to work together – with volunteers young and old – to help rid our community of unsightly rubbish.” Volunteers were rewarded for their efforts with refreshments and free match tickets to a Doncaster Rovers game, courtesy of Club Doncaster.

NCS programme manager for Club Doncaster Foundation Tom Foy said: “We are thrilled to have our young people involved in a project so close to home. "NCS is a programme which aims to benefit the local community and highlights the value of volunteering and making a difference. We would love to be part of the event should the club continue this fantastic community social action.” With plenty more social action projects lined up for the NCS participants, young people across Doncaster will be able to give back to their local community. There are still spaces left on the programme, so book on now at www.ncsyes.co.uk/sign-up-to-ncs.

DATE Club Doncaster Sports College hosted their annual sports awards evening to celebrate another year of success. The evening celebrated the year 12, year 13 and higher education students, as well as the football and rugby academies, all of whom have finished their studies and training for the academic year. Special guests, including WBC International lightweight champion Terri Harper, boxing trainer and promoter Stefy Bull, boxing trainer Jimmy Harrington and professional boxer Jimmy Joe Flint, were on hand to present the awards to the students. Sports College principal Adi Turnpenny said: “The evening is a great opportunity for students to celebrate their achievements together after a year of hard work inside and outside of the classroom. “Everyone enjoyed the evening and we are already looking forward to next year.” With plenty of awards up for grabs, there was tough competition in every category. Ethan Hargreaves and Ryan Beal picked up the player of the year awards for the men’s academy first and second team respectively, while Tom Grinstead claimed the academy development player of the year.

First-year student and MMA fighter Ayesha Dacunha will go into the Youth MMA World Championships on the back of winning the sportswoman of the year having excelled throughout the college year. In the academic presentation, a total of six students were given special recognition awards upon completion of their Bachelor of Science degrees, which were achieved here at the Sports College. Emily Medlock, Kyle Croft, Steven Swift, John Devnil and Louis Thwaites all received their five-year recognition awards, whilst Brandon Burke picked up a three-year recognition award. Many of the students will progress onto positive pathways including a second year of study with the Sports College, higher education, apprenticeships and full-time employment. To round off proceedings the academy second team were presented with their EFL CEFA North West Championship trophy after winning the league in the 2018/19 season.
