IN CHARGE:
RICHIE WELLENS "WE HAVE A YOUNG TEAM WHO ARE LEARNING AND PROGRESSING BUT I’M SEEING IMPROVEMENTS ALL THE TIME" Good afternoon everyone, I’d like to begin by welcoming Gareth Ainsworth, and the players, staff, fans and directors of Wycombe Wanderers to the Keepmoat Stadium for this afternoon’s Sky Bet League One match. Wycombe are a very strong team in this division. They’ve shown a desire to bounce straight back up to the Championship and have been going about their business like a team who are more than capable of doing that. They have a very clear identity with Gareth and the way he wants to play football – the stability around the club and the length of time he’s been in charge means that everyone knows their roles and responsibilities. They are a wellcoached side and will provide a tough test for us this afternoon. We are focusing on ourselves. We had a good result last time out and the support from the fans that day really helped us stay in the game and get the late winner
against a very good team. We need that same atmosphere and positivity today as that translates onto the field and helps our players play their best football with freedom and creativity. We have a young team who are learning and progressing but I’m seeing improvements all the time. We’ve been training really well this week, and it’s been great to get a long time with nearly a full set of players – having Jon Taylor back in and around training has been a big boost for everyone too. I will, of course, not be in the dugout this afternoon. I think I’ve spoken about the incident enough now but I got caught up in the heat of the moment and will learn from it. While I'm unable to go pitch side, I’m confident that Hunty, Copps, and Paul Gerrard will do an excellent job in my absence this afternoon. Thanks, as always, for your support. Richie

JOHN BOSTOCK: FOOTBALL, REJECTION AND ME
WORDS: Abi Rodwell
EVERY FOOTBALLER HAS A STORY. JOHN BOSTOCK IS NO DIFFERENT. From 14-year-old 'wonderkid' with a 10-year contract offer from Barcelona, to falling out of love with the game completely, his is a story like no other. Instead of signing a potentially life-changing contract with the Spanish giants, over a decade later Bostock's footballing journey has included 14 clubs in as many years. Having become the youngestever player to play for both Crystal Palace and Tottenham Hotspur, the London-born midfielder tells the club about being labelled the 'next big thing', handling rejection and why he was willing to leave the game behind completely.

Bostock joined Crystal Palace - the club he and his family supported when he was five years old.
I BELIEVE IF YOU LIVE FOR PEOPLE'S ACCEPTANCE, YOU'LL DIE BY THEIR REJECTIONS AND I HAD COMPLETELY LOST MY JOY FOR THE GAME
Naturally talented, technically gifted and a 'wand' of a left foot, Bostock would often play above his age group growing up and it wasn't long before the midfielder's 'wonderkid' label started attracting interest from some of Europe's biggest clubs. "One of those clubs was Barcelona,” he says. "It's something I look back on and think 'wow', it was a huge compliment at the time but we decided that the best thing for me at that age was to continue my development in London." Ten years after attending his first game in the stands at Selhurst Park and while most of his friends we're choosing their GCSE's - he would go on to become the club's youngest-ever player - a record he still holds to this day. "When I was about 12 I thought to myself, 'why can't I be their youngest player?'I even told the club that I wanted to break that record, so that's what I set out to do." And that's exactly what he did. He may have only made a handful of firstteam appearances for Palace, but his debut as a 15-year-old lives long in the memory. "I remember my dad trying to call me at school. "When he eventually got hold of me he told me not to kick about in the playground after school but to come straight home because he had something to tell me. "I got home and he just said, 'Neil Warnock's just phoned. He wants you in the squad for tonight.' It was surreal!
08
doncasterroversfc.co.uk
"Because of my age I wasn't even allowed to change in the same dressing room as the lads, but it was an absolute honour. For the club I support as well, it meant so much. As interest from other clubs resurfaced, Bostock chose a move to north London to continue his development at Spurs, where his competitive debut came in the UEFA Cup against Dinamo Zagreb in 2008. Aged 16 years and 295 days, another record was broken as he became their youngest-ever player too. However, due to strong competition for players the teenager found himself unable to cement a place in the first-team squad and back training with his own age group. "It was really tough because I felt like I'd proved myself at that level but I learned that as a young athlete you've got to continue to prove yourself no matter what," he continues. "I was labelled 'wonderkid' at one point but I wasn't. Every position at Spurs had two or three internationals fighting for that place. "I was playing with the likes of Gareth Bale and Luka Modric a future Ballon d'Or winner. It was a squad full of world class players at the time." And so, with no further first-team opportunities coming his way, Bostock was forced to go out on loan. It was as simple as that," he admits. "I couldn't get in the first team, I was just a kid and I needed to get experience. I had to go out on loan. If I speak to any young player that goes out on loan I just tell them to go out and learn as much as they can to come back a better player." The 29-year-old speaks with a refreshing openness and honesty. Five loan spells later a distinct lack of first-
team football in north London affected his self-belief, his performances and eventually his "joy" for the game. When his contract at Spurs ended he wondered whether football was even for him. "My confidence had been hit really hard. I was playing football for people's opinions and that's when I really fell out of love with it. "I believe if you live for people's acceptance, you'll die by their rejections and I lost my joy for it. I remember praying and saying 'God, if you want me to stop football, tell me right now'. "Ever since I was young I held so tightly onto John Bostock the footballer and I needed to let that go. I was willing to let it go at that point but I believe God took me to a place where my foundation was no longer in sport, but in him and it wasn't until I started to let that go that I found real joy and contentment in the game again." And so with Bostock's change in mentality came fresh opportunity. A move to Belgium's second division was followed by spells in Turkey and France as he began to rekindle his love for football. "Going abroad for me was great, I just needed a chance. Because they were permanent moves I had no safety net to come back to, nothing to fall back on - I needed that. "I needed to play, learn the game and find my joy for it again. I was given that platform and it was like a new beginning. In my first spell abroad in Belgium I was 21 years old and that was the first time I played more than 11 times in a season. From there I really flourished." Now with 14 clubs under his belt and plenty of setbacks along the way, there's nothing the midfielder isn't prepared for in the professional game. "I think I've experienced enough in football to prepare me for everything in both life and football," he jokes. Determined to never live with regrets, Bostock - who moved back to the UK in 2019 - instead uses his experiences to help others who may be on a similar journey. "I don't ever live with regrets, but I know now that the journey I've been on will allow me to help other young players in their careers and I'm doing that. I mentor a lot of players, I'm able to input into their lives and my life experiences have been invaluable because I can relate to what they may be going through. "I may have made different decisions if I had my time again, but knowing what I know I don't regret anything." But what piece of advice would 29-year-old John Bostock give his 15-year-old self? "What a question," he says. "I'd tell teenage me two things; Firstly, I’d tell him to remember why you started to play football and enjoy it, even in the tough times. My second piece of advice would just be to have faith in your ability."

ACADEMY UPDATE ACADEMY MANAGER TONY COOK ON BUILDING A WINNING MENTALITY WITH THE U18S Cook has been working with the coaching staff and James Coppinger to develop a strong mindset among the players in the Professional Development phase. He said: “September was tough. Gary and myself speak regularly about the development of the players and they struggled to win as many games as they would have liked. “We want to win football matches and we want our players to have a winning mentality, but we recognise that we have been playing young teams, which has penalised us a bit playing against teams with older players. “We want them to be braver out of possession as a team. From the development side it has been pleasing in one aspect because we are finding more out about the players.
“A lot of it is mentality, which we’re hoping will be improved through our mentor groups which we have introduced. “We are going to start working with James Coppinger about developing a winning mentality in themselves and help them set personal goals. “A lot of them are living away from home and travelling far and their having to adjust to hard daily training schedule having only just left school. “They have their college work and have to look after their diet, so there is a lot on their plate at a young age, but we support them all the way through this.”
WE ARE GOING TO START WORKING WITH JAMES COPPINGER ABOUT DEVELOPING A WINNING MENTALITY IN THEMSELVES AND HELP THEM SET PERSONAL GOALS
The U18s got October off to a winning start with an impressive 3-1 victory over Oldham Athletic U18s.

WYCOMBE WANDERERS MEET THE BOSS:
GARETH AINSWORTH A former youth player at Blackburn Rovers, the midfielder, who was known for his crossing ability, earned a move to Preston North End in 1992 after impressing at non-league Northwich Victoria. He moved on to Cambridge United, who in turn loaned him back to Northwich Victoria. He returned to Preston North End in 1993, and established himself in the first team during his second spell at the club. Sold on to Lincoln City in October 1995 for a £25,000 fee, his performances at Lincoln earned him a place on the PFA Third Division Team of the Year in 1996–97, and also won him a £500,000 move to Port Vale in September 1997. After being named as the Port Vale Player of the Year in 1998, he was sold on to Premier League Wimbledon for £2 million in October 1998. He was dogged by injuries at the club, and following loan spells with Preston North End and Walsall, he moved on to Cardiff City for a nominal fee in March 2003.
Ainsworth signed with Queens Park Rangers in June 2003, before going on to spend seven years with the club. During his time at QPR he helped the club to win promotion out of the Second Division in 2003–04, and twice served as caretakermanager. He joined Wycombe Wanderers in February 2010, following a short loan period. He was named in the PFA League Two Team of the Year in 2010–11, as Wycombe won promotion out of the division. He was appointed as the club's manager in November 2012, after a short period as caretakermanager. He retired from regular playing appearances to concentrate on his management duties in April 2013, but remained registered as a player. He led the club to promotion from League Two at the end of the 2017– 18 season and then from League One in 2020, securing a place in the Championship for the first time in the club's history.

ONES TO WATCH DAVID STOCKDALE
Experienced goalkeeper who has played in the top four divisions in England, with Fulham and Brighton amongst the clubs where he has spent the most amount of time. Stockdale had a couple of short loan spells with Wycombe before signing permanently in September 2020. He has been called up to two England squads during his career and will be looking to use his experience with the Chairboys as they try and return to the Championship at the first attempt.
JOE JACOBSON
The 34-year full back joined Wycombe in 2014 and has now made over 300 appearances. Club captain and leader, he has twice been named in the PFA Team of the Year in 2016 and 2020. He’s also partial to a goal and has notched over 20 in the last three seasons.
SAM VOKES
The signing of Vokes was seen by many as a bit of a coup for Wycombe, again, another with bags of experience. A Welsh International with 64 caps and 11 goals, he was plying his trade regularly in the Premier League with Burnley just three seasons ago. Having played for Bournemouth and Wolves, Vokes joined Burnley in 2012 and went on to make 230 league appearances scoring 56 goals before joining Stoke City in 2018. The past three seasons were not too fruitful with only a dozen goals in all competitions for Stoke, however he’s started off well for Wycombe with Ainsworth getting the best out of the striker as he does with so many.

Like Rovers, Wycombe Wanderers were formedby working men, although Wycombe’s founding fathers (in 1887) were furniture makers rather than railwaymen. Wanderers joined the Isthmian League in 1921 and spent 64 years there, winning the league title on eight occasions. They won the FA Amateur Cup in 1931 and the FA Trophy in 1991 and 1993. In the latter year they also finished as Champions of the Football Conference, joining the Football League for the 1993-94 season. Wanderers first played Rovers on 25th September 1993 at Adams Park, their home ground since 1990. The home side won 1-0 with a goal by Tim Langford despite being reduced to ten men in the first half. The Buckinghamshire team completed the double at Belle Vue on 19th March 1994, winning 3-0 with first half goals by Steve Brown plus two from Steve Guppy.

1879-2019
Wanderers were promoted in their first Football League season, and did not meet Rovers again until October 2006, in a League Cup 3rd Round tie at Adams Park. Rovers led twice and were pegged back each time, losing the eventual penalty shoot-out 3-2. A decade passed before the teams met again, this time on 29th October 2016 at the Keepmoat Stadium in a League Two fixture. Wycombe took the lead after 19 minutes through Matt Bloomfield but Rovers levelled ten minutes later via Tommy Rowe. John Marquis then scored a brilliant individual goal to put Rovers 2-1
up at the interval. However, Bloomfield had the last word in the 78th minute earning the visitors a share of the spoils. The return fixture was in April 2017 by which time Rovers had already secured promotion to League One. Two goals from Luke O’Nien gave Wycombe a 2-1 victory. Wanderers were promoted to League One in 2017-18 and made their second visit to the Keepmoat on 11th August 2018. Rovers finally recorded a win over Wycombe with Mallik Wilks, Joe Wright and Marquis scoring in a 3-0 victory. The meeting at Adams Park in January 2019 looked likely to go the way of Rovers when they led 2-0 with 20 minutes to go (Marquis and Rowe the scorers). However, Paris Cowan-Hall pulled one back and then in stoppage time Curtis Thompson levelled the scores. With almost the last kick of the game Cowan-Hall scored a dramatic winner, 3-2 to Wanderers. The last meetings between the teams before today took place in the truncated 2019-20 season. Rovers’ hoodoo continued at Adams Park, with a stoppage time penalty from Joe Jacobson giving Wycombe a 1-0 win. On 29th February 2020 Rovers had their revenge with goals from Niall Ennis, Kieron Sadlier and an own goal securing a 3-1 win. Two weeks later the League programme was suspended due to Covid-19. Wycombe eventually won the play-offs and spent the 2020-21 season in the Championship. Despite some fine performances they were relegated and return to the Keepmoat for today’s League One contest.

ON THIS DAY 16TH OCTOBER
WORDS: John Coyle
Four former Doncaster Rovers players were born on this day. Defender STEWART GRAY (born 1950 in Doncaster) came through the youth ranks at Belle Vue and made his debut on 10th February 1968 in a 2-0 home win over Brentford. He was something of a squad player, filling in for absent colleagues, although in 1969-70 he made 39 senior appearances. In September 1970 he joined Grimsby Town where he spent seven seasons, making exactly 300 appearances. He was an ever-present in 1971-72 when Town won the Division Four championship. After leaving Grimsby in 1977 he joined Frickley Athletic but in March 1978 he re-joined Rovers to bolster a flagging defence. His six appearances included only one defeat, after which he returned to Frickley. His overall record for Rovers was 69 appearances, no goals. Stewart Gray
MATTHEW (MATTY) CAUDWELL (b. 1978 in Chesterfield) signed for Rovers, then in the Football Conference, from Hallam FC and made his debut in October 1998. The diminutive winger enjoyed his best season in 2000-01, making 29 appearances and scoring four goals. He was released at the end of the 2001-02 season and joined Worksop Town. His overall record was 96 appearances and seven goals. Also born on this day were NORMAN SYKES (1936-2009), who made fifteen appearances in the 1966-67 season and DUDLEY ROBERTS (b.1945) who made seven appearances in the 1972-73 season, on loan from Mansfield Town. Neither scored for Rovers, although Sykes had the misfortune to score two own goals in a match at Walsall in 1967.
Matty Caudwell
Fifty years ago today, Rovers were at Somerton Park to face Newport County in a Division Four fixture. They included 17-year-old Mike Elwiss who scored two goals on his Football League debut, helping Rovers to a 3-1 win. Elwiss scored thirty-five goals in 106 appearances before moving to Preston North End in February 1974. On 16th October 1982, Rovers played Brentford at Belle Vue. Tony Mahoney put Brentford ahead, but Glynn Snodin made it 1-1 before the interval, after which the real fun started. Three goals in seven minutes from Glenn Humphries, Terry Austin and Garry Liddell put Rovers 4-1 ahead. Brentford also had a man sent off during this spell. Nevertheless, the Londoners fought back and goals from Jim McNichol, Gary Roberts and Bob Booker made it 4-4. Rovers, who had seemed certain of three points found themselves hanging on for one.
Mike Elwiss
Coming to more recent events, in 1999 Conference members Rovers beat Crook Town of the Northern League 7-0 at Belle Vue in a FA Cup Qualifying tie. Glenn Kirkwood scored four times while Mike Newell, Matty Caudwell and Kevin McIntyre also netted. Finally, eleven years ago, Rovers faced Scunthorpe United in the Championship and won 3-1. Billy Sharp scored twice against his former club and Jimmy O’Connor also scored. All in all, 16th October seems quite a good day for Rovers through the years.

Giving Football Back to Small Business At eBay, we know small business and football clubs used to be like chips and gravy, two peas in a pod – a match made in community heaven. Ironmongers, ship workers, spring makers and cobblers, all formed clubs which decades later are still prospering. But nowadays, you’d think it was all eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues and mega sponsors, detached from the humble origins of our historic clubs.
That’s why eBay are proud to support 300,000 small businesses who help power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be donating our advertising space to a lot of these businesses – on match day hoardings, around grounds and beyond – throughout the coming season, to ensure they can continue to thrive in our local communities. So, join us in giving your support to Small Business Power, because today, they need us more than ever.

COMMUNITY NEWS
RESTART A HEART DAY DONCASTER ROVERS HAS TEAMED UP WITH YORKSHIRE AMBULANCE SERVICE (YAS) TO PROMOTE THE IMPORTANCE OF CPR FOLLOWING CHRISTIAN ERIKSEN’S CARDIAC ARREST DURING THE EURO 2020 TOURNAMENT. Swift action was crucial to Eriksen’s survival when the 29-year-old midfielder collapsed during Denmark’s opening game against Finland on 12 June. He was brought back to life with a combination of CPR - cardiopulmonary resuscitation that involves chest compressions - and an electric shock from a defibrillator. As part of the Yorkshire Ambulance Service Restart a Heart campaign which aims to teach CPR, Rovers’ fans will be given the opportunity to learn the life-saving skill at today’s match. Watch out for the CPR Anywhere video on the big screens and check out the players and Donny Dog in their Restart a Heart campaign t-shirts! Ambulance staff will also be teaching CPR to Under 18s players as part of their Life Skills sessions. Jason Carlyon, Community Engagement Manager with YAS, said: “The quick reaction of witnesses undoubtedly saved Christian Erikson’s life, as was the case with Fabrice Muamba, Glen Hoddle and David Ginola who are also cardiac arrest survivors. “But not everyone is as fortunate. In the UK, only 10% of people who suffer a cardiac arrest outside hospital survive, partly because they don’t receive early CPR and defibrillation.

“With only one in three people in England saying they would be willing to perform CPR if they witnessed a cardiac arrest, it’s important that we give people the confidence and skills to save someone’s life in this medical emergency. “More patients will survive if more people know what to do before an ambulance arrives, so we are delighted that Doncaster Rovers is supporting our campaign and helping us to create more life-savers.” Tommy Rowe added: "During the Euros the importance of knowing CPR was brought home to all of us. We all know how important it is to keep your heart healthy but very few of us know what to do if we find someone who is in cardiac arrest. "Raising awareness and teaching everyone CPR could save countless lives - we're pleased to be doing our bit at Doncaster Rovers to ensure more people know how to do this lifesaving first aid."
Ambulance staff and volunteers will visit 109 Yorkshire’s secondary schools to teach CPR to 30,000 students on Restart a Heart Day (Friday 15 October 2021). Find out more, including CPR tutorial videos, at www.restartaheart.yas.nhs.uk The Restart a Heart campaign is supported by the Yorkshire Ambulance Service Charity. Text CPRFIVE to 70085 to donate £5 to support our life-saving training.
