"WE’VE GOT A REAL IDENTITY IN THE STYLE OF PLAY WE HAVE AND WILL KEEP GIVING OUR ALL EVERY DAY TO ENSURE WE BUILD ON THE RECENT RESULTS"

GRANT McCANN GOOD AFTERNOON AND WELCOME BACK TO THE KEEPMOAT STADIUM. I’D LIKE TO WELCOME DAVID HOPKIN, AS WELL AS THE PLAYERS, COACHING STAFF, FANS AND OWNERS OF BRADFORD CITY. We go into this afternoon’s game in confident mood after last Saturday’s 4-1 win at Walsall which followed the home success over Luton Town. It has been a good start to the season for us, but we’re not going to get carried away as nothing is settled at this point in the year. What we do have is a hard-working group of players who are willing to learn. We’ve got a real identity in the style of play we have and will keep giving our all every day to ensure we build on the recent results.

This was a gesture to show the team’s respect to Jake, as well as Nidge Roe and Scott Richardson who have recently passed away. While we cannot get to the funeral of every fan who passes on, we want everyone in the Rovers family to know we are thinking of them in their rough moments. Whether a player, on the sidelines or at the back of the Black Bank - everyone is a key member of the team. Enjoy the game.

I took the entire first-team squad to the funeral of Jake “Pieman” Power the day before the game at Walsall. Since I’ve been at the club it has been clear there is a real connection with fans, and over the past few weeks we have had to say farewell to some really popular and well-known people.

"IT WAS A REAL SHOW OF DETERMINATION FROM THE PLAYERS AND THEY GOT THEIR JUST REWARDS WITH SOME CRACKING TEAM GOALS AND THREE POINTS"

GAVIN BALDWIN GOOD AFTERNOON AND WELCOME BACK TO THE KEEPMOAT STADIUM AS WE LOOK TO BUILD ON OUR GOOD START TO THE SEASON. Those of you who were at the Bescot Stadium last week could not fail to have been impressed by the performance put in by the lads. It was a real show of determination from the players and they got their just rewards with some cracking team goals and three points.

This is a busy period for staff at Club Doncaster, with today’s game the second of three played at the Keepmoat Stadium this week. The Dons draw their regular season to a close tomorrow by hosting Workington, knowing only a freak result could stop them finishing third in Kingstone Press League One.

Over the past few years we feel the club has built a strong connection with fans, something we have built on under Grant McCann and resulted in him taking the entire first-team squad to the funeral of Jake “Pieman” Power.

That has been a good season of improvement, having finished sixth in the previous campaign, and they look likely to host Workington again a week later in the play-off semi-final. The Dons players have really put in the effort this season and it would be great to see some good backing in the play-off games as they look to get over the line and secure promotion.

We have felt keenly as a club the losses within the support base recently, with the funerals of fans Nidge Roe and Scott Richardson in recent weeks.

Enjoy the game.

Barry Miller, club chaplain, carried out the service and Grant was keen to take the players down after speaking to him. While taking players to funerals is not a regular occurrence, it helps show the players how much the club means to the community and keep that connection going. The gesture was intended to show respect for all those we have lost.

ISSUE 07 v BRADFORD CITY

JOHN S I U Q MAR JOHN MARQUIS HAS STARTED THE 2018/19 CAMPAIGN IN THE FORM THAT ROVERS FANS HAVE COME TO EXPECT FROM HIM AFTER HIS PERFORMANCES OVER THE PAST TWO SEASONS. The No.9 has already notched 46 goals in all competitions in just over 100 appearances since arriving at the Keepmoat Stadium in 2016, and says he is proud of what he has already achieved with the club. “It hasn’t really sunk in yet, it feels like I’ve been here for a long time but then in other ways like I haven’t been here long at all,” he says. “I’ve played a lot of games and haven’t missed many through injury, every game I’ve been fit for I’ve played in over the past couple of seasons. “It makes me proud because I take care in looking after my body to make sure I am available, so to be knocking on the door of 50 goals so quickly is a good achievement for me. “I won’t be sitting back and relaxing because I want to get to 50 goals in all competitions, and then 50 in the league as soon as I can. “I think I’m only a few games away from playing 100 league games for the club which will be another good achievement and I want to kick-on as much as I can. All I’ve ever wanted to do is play a lot of games and improve as much as possible, I feel like I’m an experienced member of the team now.”

With five goals already this season Marquis has been pleased with his own personal form, as well as that of the team in Sky Bet League One. Rovers have adapted to a new way of playing under Grant McCann, with goals from around the team becoming as important as ever.

patient in terms of waiting for the ball to come to him from his teammates. “I’ve played before in a one or three depending on how you look at it, it’s not something that is brand new to me and the manager wants me to play high,” he says.

“I’ve had a good start, five goals in 10 games is good and to keep that average for the rest of the season would be a decent return,” says Marquis.

“I sat down and spoke to him after the Portsmouth game when he asked me to come deeper within the game, and we agreed that didn’t really pay off in terms of me getting on the end of chances.

“It could have been more, I always want to improve and do better so I’ll be looking to add to my tally as soon as I can.

“It wasn’t what we’d done earlier in the season so it was difficult and he wants other people to be creating things and me to be the one getting the goals.

“As a team we’ve done fairly well, there have been games where we picked up more points than we deserve, but then others where we haven’t won when we should have. “The games against Portsmouth and Peterborough were ones we should have taken three points from, but then may have been fortunate to beat Southend and Luton so it’s levelled itself out.” The striker was challenged by McCann at the start of pre-season to make more runs in behind of opposition defences. He feels it has paid off so far, even if he does have to be

“We’re both looking at it in the same sort of way where it will benefit me by staying higher up the pitch and not being tempted to get involved too often. “It can be frustrating because I want to be on the ball as much as I can but I have to have faith in my teammates that they will find me.” Rovers are still working on improving their ruthless edge as a team, after three straight draws prevented them from climbing into the play-off places in the month of August. With the attacking intent already on show this season, Marquis feels it is a case of the final ball needing to be the right one more often than not. “The way that we set up and the manager wants us to play means that we are always a threat in games even if we don’t manage to get the goals we deserve,” he says. “We need to add that last bit of quality in terms of balls into the box and finishing product on the end of them. “I think you create your own luck throughout the course

"WE WANT TO PLAY FREEFLOWING ATTACKING FOOTBALL AND BE SCORING FOR FUN EVERY WEEK BUT SOMETIMES IT’S NOT POSSIBLE TO DO THAT" of the season, as a team the main striker is the one that is expected to win games out of nothing. “We all need to be a bit better, it’s a game of percentages and if we all add a bit more to our game then it will make a big difference.” In four league games at home this season, Rovers have won two and drawn two – in a run where they have conceded just one goal. They have shown a determination not to be beaten, as well as providing moments of quality at the other end of the pitch. “We’ve been really good at home and made ourselves hard to beat, we drew a few blanks but then we’ve been much better in front of goal recently,” he adds. “It was frustrating against Porstmouth but they have started well, in a way when you’re playing like they are the luck seems to go your way. “We want to play free-flowing attacking football and be scoring for fun every week but sometimes it’s not possible to do that, and you have to work harder to break teams down. “Looking at the Luton game, Matty Blair was calm with his finish and then Ben Whiteman side-footed his finish when the ball broke to him. “We drew too many games last season, it’s worth risking a defeat to go all out to win the game because three points in this division is key.”

FOUR TO BRADFORD CITY

RICHARD O'DONNELL TOP STOPPER

01

The Sheffield-born stopper joined the Bantams over the summer following his departure from Northampton Town. O’Donnell began with hometown side Sheffield Wednesday, coming up through the youth ranks at Hillsborough, before making a handful of appearances between 2006 and 2012 for the Owls. O’Donnell became an established figure in goal for Walsall over two years between 2013 and 2015, playing 90 games in the league for the Saddlers, being voted their Player of the Year in his final season. Spells with Wigan Athletic, Bristol City and Rotherham United all followed, before a move to Northampton in January, from which he would make the move to Valley Parade, signing a two-year deal.

JOSH WRIGHT MIDFIELD MAESTRO

44

The central midfielder joined from Southend United over the summer and was immediately installed as captain upon his arrival at Valley Parade. After beginning his career with Charlton Athletic, Wright joined Scunthorpe United in 2009, making 71 appearances over two seasons in the Championship for the Iron. Four years with Millwall followed, before a move to one of Wright’s former loan sides Gillingham in 2015, becoming famous for being the first player to score a hat-trick of penalties since April 1978 against former club Scunthorpe in March 2017. Following a season with Southend United between 2017 and 2018, Wright moved back up north to join up the Bantams on a two-year deal.

14

ISSUE 07 v BRADFORD CITY

O WATCH RYAN McGOWAN DEFENSIVE ROCK

04

The Aussie defender is a man with World Cup experience, having represented his country at the 2014 competition in Brazil. McGowan has travelled around the world in search for football, playing not just in England and Scotland, but in China and the United Arab Emirates, including spells at Heart of Midlothian, Dundee United, Henan Jianye and Al-Sharjah. McGowan made his senior Australian debut in 2012 and has so far represented the Socceroos 20 times, representing them at various international competitions such as the World Cup and the 2017 Confederations Cup. He joined the Bantams in January following his departure from Al-Sharjah.

EOIN DOYLE DEADLY STRIKER

09

Yet another one of the Bantams’ summer signings, the forward signed an initial two-year deal back in August. After spending time between clubs in his native Ireland, Doyle made a move to Hibernian in 2011, before heading down south to Chesterfield after two seasons with the Edinburgh side. He helped the Spireites to the League Two title in his first season, before guiding them to the League One play-offs the following year after scoring 21 goals in the third tier. Time in the Championship with Cardiff City and Preston North End followed, with loan spells at Portsmouth and then last season at Oldham Athletic during his time with the Lilywhites, before his move to Valley Parade this season.

TWO OF THE CONNECTIONS BETWEEN THE CLUBS ARE FROM ARGUABLY ONE OF THE MOST SUCCESSFUL PERIODS OF ROVERS’ RECENT PAST, WITH THE FIRST ENJOYING BACK-TOBACK PROMOTIONS DURING HIS TIME IN SOUTH YORKSHIRE. DONCASTER-BORN RICKY RAVENHILL INITIALLY BEGAN HIS CAREER WITH RIVALS BARNSLEY, HOWEVER, AFTER MAKING NO APPEARANCES FOR THE TYKES, HE MADE THE SWITCH TO BELLE VUE IN 2002, WITH ROVERS IN THE CONFERENCE. Ravenhill helped Rovers to return to the Football League after a five-year absence, playing in the Conference play-off final win over Dagenham and Redbridge in Stoke. The following season would see Ravenhill score his first professional goal, scoring in the 5-0 win over Kidderminster Harriers, with the midfielder going on to help Rovers secure the Division 3 title in 2004. Rovers’ first season back in the third tier almost proved to be as successful as their previous two seasons, with Ravenhill scoring four goals as Rovers finished 10th in League One, just five points outside the play-offs, just missing out on what could have been an unprecedented rise through the leagues. Ravenhill left Belle Vue in 2006, firstly onloan to Chester City, before a permanent move to Grimsby Town, spending half a season with the Mariners, before moving to Darlington on-loan later on that campaign, making that move a permanent one in 2007, spending two years with the Quakers. Two years at Notts County followed that, which included helping the Magpies to the League Two title, before a move to Bradford City, where he was a part of the famous Bantams team that reached the League Cup final in 2013, with City in League Two at the time. He returned to Wembley later on in the year to win his third promotion from the fourth tier with his third different club, helping the Bantams to win the League Two play-off final, with a 3-0 win over Northampton Town. Ravenhill ended his professional career with Northampton Town and Mansfield Town, however he is still involved with the game, playing semi-professional football at Buxton, as well as being involved with the youth academy here at Rovers, working as a coach in the academy set-up. The second connection between the two was a man who captained Rovers to success at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, with

ISSUE 07 v BRADFORD CITY

GRAEME LEE becoming a huge fan favourite during his time in red and white. Lee began with Hartlepool United, making well over 200 appearances during his eight years with the Pools, before making his move to South Yorkshire, though initially with Sheffield Wednesday before his move to DN4. After signing in 2005, he was named captain, and scored the winning goal in their Football League Trophy success over Bristol Rovers in 2007, with his bullet header in extra time securing victory. The following season would see him play a lesser role, as Rovers were promoted via the League One play-offs against Leeds United, however Lee would depart following the end of that campaign. He joined the Bantams following his departure from the Keepmoat, and was instantly made captain, scoring twice in 44 games, before moving to Notts County the following year, linking up once again with Ravenhill. Lee was part of the Magpies squad that lifted the League Two title in 2010, spending a further year with County before signing for Darlington in 2011, where he would close out his professional career. Lee now works as a coach with hometown club Middlesbrough, where he currently oversees the under-23 squad at the Riverside. Alex Gibbings

MEMORABLE MATCH BRADFORD CITY

NOVEMBER 1 2014

Rovers came from behind to beat Bradford City at Valley Parade back in November 2014, as Curtis Main’s stunning winner was the difference between the two sides. It was the Bantams who had much of the ball in the first half, with Rovers’ keeper Sam Johnstone being kept particularly busy in his first appearance since returning on-loan from Manchester United. Johnstone first got down well to James Hanson’s strike which looked destined for the bottom corner, but he got down well to claw the ball away from danger. Main and Richie Wellens would also try to get the game’s opening goal, although Jordan Pickford in the opposite goal was on hand to save both their efforts. Jon Stead would be next to go close for the hosts as he collected the ball from Mark Yeates’ knock-down, but his shot from just inside the area fizzed just wide of Johnstone’s far post, but this would be a mere warning signal to the Rovers defence, who would be set back after Cedric Evina’s lengthy injury, which saw Liam Wakefield come on in his place. Deep into first half injury time and the scoring would be opened, as Stead collected the ball on the edge of the area and took a couple of touches to open

up some space. He set himself up for a curling effort which nestled in the top left corner of Johnstone’s goal, giving the Bantams a deserved lead at the break. Rovers would come out firing after the interval, and sub Wakefield would be instrumental in helping his side to find the equaliser they had been looking for. His dangerous cross was swung in to the area, with Reece Wabara lurking at the back post, and he put the ball into the roof of the net to get Rovers back on level terms, and this would then set Rovers up for an entertaining final 30 minutes.

10 minutes later and Rovers would be ahead, with Main firing in one of the goals of the season. He collected the ball from the right, taking two touches before smashing the ball into the top corner of the goal from 20 yards out on the halfvolley. A Bradford onslaught followed after that, but it would be United loanee Johnstone who would get the better of the Bantams, and Rovers saw out the game to collect a huge three points in what was an exciting Yorkshire derby.

WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?

This result would set Rovers up on a great run of form mid-season, seeing them lose just three times in 17 games, leaving them looking like they might just sneak into the play-off places as they headed into the final stretch of the League One season. However, a poor end to the season saw them fade away from play-off contention, and Rovers finished 13th in League One that year. The Bantams on the other hand didn’t let the defeat affect them, winning six out of the next eight, drawing the other two. They finished in 7th, four points off Chesterfield in the final play-off positions, but they would later reach the play-offs in the next two seasons, losing out to Millwall in the final of the second of those, having lost to them in the semi-final the season before. Both goalkeepers on the day both went on to play much higher in the football pyramid, with Johnstone going on-loan to Aston Villa last season, helping them to the Championship play-off final, where they lost against Fulham. Pickford, meanwhile, has been very successful since his stint with the Bantams, making a move to Everton from Sunderland before the start of last season, and he went on to make Gareth Southgate’s World Cup squad for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

THE

NUMBERS GAME MOST FANS' IDEA OF THE NO. 5 IN A FOOTBALL TEAM IS A COMMANDING CENTRAL DEFENDER, AND CERTAINLY SINCE 2002 ROVERS HAVE HAD A FAIR NUMBER OF THOSE WEARING SQUAD NUMBER 5. HOWEVER, SOME OF THE OCCUPANTS OF THE NUMBER 5 SHIRT HAVE BEEN VERY DIFFERENT TO THAT PARTICULAR STEREOTYPE. The first player allocated squad number 5 at the start of the 2002-03 was DEAN BARRICK, by trade a left-back. When he moved on during the season to join Nuneaton Borough he handed over the number to midfielder JOHN DOOLAN. A strongly built Liverpudlian, Doolan was a key figure during Rovers’ first two seasons back in the Football League, helping the club to the Division Three championship in 2003-04 and consolidation in the higher league the following season. A skilful passer who never shirked a tackle, Doolan was a real crowd favourite and many were sorry to see him move on to Blackpool at the end of the 2004-05 season. The next owner of the number 5 shirt, PHIL McGUIRE (2005-06), often played at right-back and seemed to have difficulty settling at the club. He arrived from Aberdeen and returned north of the border to join Dunfermline Athletic after only eleven league games. The 2006-07 season saw the shirt pass to an authentic centre-back, GRAEME LEE. “Spike” had arrived from Sheffield Wednesday during the 2005-06 season after the departure of Steve Foster and was made club captain for 200607. A no-nonsense defender with an eye for goal his finest moment with Rovers came when he scored the winning goal in extra-time as Rovers beat Bristol Rovers 3-2 at the Millenium Stadium to win the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy in April 2007. Injuries forced him to miss much of the 2007-08 season and he left at the end of that to join Bradford City. Lee’s replacement both in central defence and at No.5 was MATT MILLS, originally signed on loan from Manchester City in 2007. Mills played a key role in Rovers’ promotion to the Championship and in July 2008 he signed permanently for a fee around £300,000 and took the No. 5 shirt. Mills was a regular starter as Rovers overcame a disappointing early season to secure their place in the Championship again for 2009-10. However, by the start of that season he had moved on, joining fellow Championship club Reading for a fee believed to be around £2 million. For 2009-10 the No. 5 shirt was occupied, rather incongruously, by striker BILLY SHARP, signed on

loan from Sheffield United. The following season Sharp signed permanently and moved to the more logical No. 10 berth. Centre-back WAYNE THOMAS wore the No. 5 shirt for 2010-11 and RICHARD NAYLOR, another defender, did so for 2011-12. In July 2012 Rovers signed a player who epitomised the qualities expected from a No. 5. ROB JONES, who joined from Sheffield Wednesday was not only a commanding defender who seldom lost an aerial challenge, he was also a leader of men. Jones was appointed captain and when manager Dean Saunders left in January 2013 to join Wolves he became player-coach alongside caretaker boss Brian Flynn. Jones played a huge part in driving Rovers to the League One championship, secured with a dramatic last-gasp winner at Brentford. Sadly a serious neck injury sustained at Reading the following season meant he made only 14 League appearances over two-and-a-half seasons. He was appointed caretaker-manager after the dismissal of Paul Dickov in September 2015 but left the club not long after the permanent appointment of Darren Ferguson. For the last two seasons the No. 5 has been sported by the talented MATHIEU BAUDRY (201618) and has now passed to young defender JOE WRIGHT. Joe has some tough acts to follow as Rovers’ No. 5. "AT ROVERS WE HAVE A PROUD RECORD OF ACADEMY PLAYERS GAINING PROFESSIONAL CONTRACTS AND WE HOPE THAT THESE BOYS WILL BE WITH US FOR YEARS TO COME"

KIERAN SCARFF TODAY WE WELCOME THE PLAYERS AND FAMILIES OF THIS SEASON’S NEW ACADEMY U9S SQUAD. Prior to the first team game they will be taking part in a tournament on the pitches within the Club Doncaster Sports Village. The winners of the tournament will receive the John Chappell Trophy. John was an avid supporter of the youth department. John left some money to the Academy, and thanks to this generosity we have been able to upgrade our match analysis and education resources at Cantley Park. His daughter Julia and his family have been great in their support of making all this happen and I am delighted that Julia will have presented the cup to the first winners of the John Chappell Trophy. This is another great example of how much this club means to its supporters and why we appreciate their ongoing support. Following the tournament the Under 9 squad will be presented to the crowd at half time so please show them your support

as they enter the pitch today. This experience will hopefully live long in their memories as they join the Academy. They have an action packed day including meeting the manager, signing their forms and receiving signed shirts following a tour of the stadium. Our lead foundation phase coach Tom Sutton and our excellent staff have worked extremely hard with these players. We have only offered contracts to a small number of players this season as we continue our quest to sign the players with the most potential in the area. These boys have displayed over the past few months that they have the talent and dedication to go far within our system.

embark on journey with us. We have and exciting group of players who we will work with to continue their footballing development and education. Academy football is an exciting challenge that all the boys are enthused to meet head on. They will need the constant support of Tom and his coaches as well as from their families to ensure that they continue to progress and we hope to see them all walking out in a few years as members of the first team squad. At Rovers we have a proud record of Academy players gaining professional contracts and we hope that these boys will be with us for years to come. Good luck to the gaffer, staff and players ahead of today’s game.

This is an exciting day for the club as well as the players and their families, and we would all like to wish Sam, Tobey, Harvey, Rylan and Kyle all the best as they

SAFETY Three points is not the only priority today. Making sure everyone goes home safe is the most important result. Over recent months we have been working closely with the police and the EFL to review security at the Keepmoat Stadium. Now we are asking you to do your bit. It is vital that everyone - players, staff and supporters - remains vigilant and reports any concerns to stewards or police. Attacks might be rare, and the chance of you being caught up in one unlikely, but the message is ACT #ActionCountersTerrorism. Rovers safety officer Sam Ramsden said:

AD-105x148-Football Foundation.indd 1

"We want everyone to enjoy today’s game at the Keepmoat Stadium but if you see anything that causes you concern, tell a steward or staff member. Please do not worry that you might be wasting our time. "The stewards are here to help keep us all safe so please be patient and cooperate with their instructions. When it comes to security it has to be a team effort and we are all players." Here's a quick reminder of what you can do to help keep yourself and others safe: • Arrive early, allowing more time for security checks • Minimise what you carry, fewer bag searches will speed up entry to the ground

• Be vigilant at all times and if you see anything suspicious, tell a steward right away • If you see anything that could pose an immediate threat to safety, call 999 • In an emergency, listen to the public address instructions and follow them • If told to evacuate, do so immediately, do not wait around to film events on your mobile • Move right away from the stadium as quickly as possible for your safety and to allow clear access for any emergency vehicles • Once you are safe, follow the local police force on Twitter for updates To find out more, visit gov.uk/ACT or @TerrorismPolice

SUPPORTER LIAISON OFFICER DEAN MEDCALF GOOD AFTERNOON LADIES AND GENTLEMEN AND A WARM WELCOME TO THE KEEPMOAT STADIUM TO THE VISITING FANS FROM BRADFORD CITY. I would like to thank the 496 Rovers supporters who made the journey to Walsall last week. What a fantastic game it was and a brilliant result, I hope you all enjoyed the game and had a safe journey home. On Monday October 8, I have been invited to the annual EFL SLO seminar that is taking place at Ewood Park the home of Blackburn Rovers. These meetings are attended by the SLOs in the northern region and it is a chance for us all to meet up to share ideas and good practice. At each meeting, there are presentations from of the clubs in attendance: at last years meeting, I was asked to do a presentation on how we carry out the SLO role here at Doncaster Rovers. I explained how Sheila and I work on matchdays, how we meet the visiting fans when they arrive, the information I put out to the away fans before games, the blogs I write to pass the information on before we go to an away game and how I communicate with people through social media on a daily basis, plus much more. It is always interesting listening to other SLO’s ideas and how other people carry out their roles and it allows me to pick up ideas to make my role better. I received some really good feedback that day from the EFL and the people in attendance and a lot of them told

me how impressive the work is that we do here. I have also noticed recently that other SLOs who were in attendance that day have started to adopt certain aspects of what we do here, which is always a huge compliment. Also, I am looking forward to picking up the very first SLO handbook that the EFL has created recently. I was again lucky enough to be involved in the production of this as I was interviewed by the EFL regarding how I carry out my role. This is the first of its kind and it will hopefully help all the SLO’s in the country.

I will let you all know how the seminar goes and hopefully, I will pick up some more great ideas to drive the SLO here at the club forward. As always if you have any questions then please contact me on the usual SLO social media accounts, @SLO_DRFC on twitter, DRFC SLO on Facebook or you email me at dean.medcalf@clubdoncaster. co.uk. I hope you all enjoy today’s game. Rovers Till I Die Dean Medcalf Supporter Liaison Officer

FOUNDATION UP

Rovers first-team players were given a talk which could one day help preserve their eyesight by, a representative from Doncaster and Bassetlaw diabetes eye screening programme. Ingrid Thomasson, joint programme manager for the service, visited the first team at Cantley Park with the aim of raising awareness about the condition as well as highlighting the importance of attending screenings to ensure any problems are caught early on. The hope is hey will then pass this crucial information along to fans, friends and families. Ingrid said: “It is important people are equipped with sufficient knowledge about diabetic retinopathy, as it can have severe complications if not closely monitored and treated promptly.

40

ISSUE 07 v BRADFORD CITY

Often brought on by high blood sugar levels, it can be incredibly damaging to the back of the eye, potentially resulting in loss of sight. “Everyone with diabetes, aged 12 or over, receives an annual invitation for retinopathy screening. These appointments are absolutely vital for detecting the condition before it is too late. If you are, or a loved one, are in this risk group, make sure you keep your appointment.” Rovers will be collaborating further with the screening programme ahead of National Eye Health Week, which will take place from 24 to 30 September 2018, with posters in the stadium today and leaflets available. Rovers striker Alfie May said: “I greatly appreciate Ingrid taking

the time to speak with us, as I have family members with diabetes and so this matter is really close to my heart. At first I was frightened to hear that my family could be at risk of losing their eyesight, but when I found out about the screening appointments, I felt great relief. For this reason, it’s very important to me that we get the message out there.” If you have diabetes, then there are a number of things you can do to reduce your risk of sight loss. As well as attending your annual screening appointments, make sure you exercise regularly, eat well and control your blood sugar levels and avoid smoking. If you think you have missed your screening appointment you can call the team on 01302 642596 to arrange another one.

DATE Almost 700 young people from across the Doncaster Borough celebrated their NCS graduation at the annual Club Doncaster Foundation event this week. An evening of awards, memories, music and food recognised a fantastic summer of success for the participants, who have spent three weeks of physically and mentally enduring challenges, along with a 30-hour voluntary community social action project.

“The social action this year has been incredible, 667 young people delivered 21,780 hours of community work and managed to raise £12,473 for local charities, which is phenomenal. “The graduation is a huge showcase of all their hard work for the summer, so we’re delighted that so many guests could be there to help them celebrate.”

Rovers duo Alfie May and Alex Kiwomya were on hand to present certificates and join in the celebrations.

Guests at the graduation at the Dome included Dame Rosie Winterton MP, mayor Ros Jones, Rovers vice-chairman Andy Watson and Club Doncaster chief executive Gavin Baldwin.

NCS Programme manager, Jan Budtz said: “This has been our biggest NCS summer to date, so I am extremely proud of all my staff and participants for making it one to remember.

The NCS summer programme allows young people to escape their comfort zones, embarking on an adrenaline filled adventure in the Lake District. They try their hand at activities such as rock

climbing, kayaking, hiking and archery. They then return home to workshops delivered by Dame Kelly Homes Trust and then finally volunteer in a range of social action projects to impact on their community. 667 participants contributed to 46 social action projects, delivering 21,780 hours of community action and raising £12,473 for charities across the borough. NCS is open to all 15-17 year olds in the region and the Club Doncaster Foundation will begin recruiting in November for the next adventure which takes place in summer 2019.
