IN CHARGE:
RICHIE WELLENS GOOD EVENING AND WELCOME TO THE KEEPMOAT STADIUM FOR OUR PAPA JOHN’S TROPHY MATCH AGAINST MANCHESTER CITY U21. I’d like to begin by welcoming the Brian Barry-Murphy and the visiting supporters, players, directors and staff from Manchester City to the Keepmoat Stadium. Brian has done a fantastic job since taking over the City Academy team – they’ve won almost every game they’ve played this season so I'm sure confidence will be high among the players. We are expecting a tough test this evening against players who are technically and tactically gifted and who are also used to winning. We will be focusing on ourselves - the match will give our young players chance to test themselves against some of the best players in the country at their age group. Tonight’s match will also allow us to give opportunities to the players who have been working hard in training but haven’t been getting as many minutes in the league. Despite the changes, we will be putting out a competitive team to win this match. We know that if we want to give ourselves a chance of going through to the knock-out stages we have to win our next two group matches and keep the momentum from the league win on the weekend going. Thank you for all your support, Richie

Giving Football Back to Small Business At eBay, we know small business and football clubs used to be like chips and gravy, two peas in a pod – a match made in community heaven. Ironmongers, ship workers, spring makers and cobblers, all formed clubs which decades later are still prospering. But nowadays, you’d think it was all eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues and mega sponsors, detached from the humble origins of our historic clubs.
That’s why eBay are proud to support 300,000 small businesses who help power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be donating our advertising space to a lot of these businesses – on match day hoardings, around grounds and beyond – throughout the coming season, to ensure they can continue to thrive in our local communities. So, join us in giving your support to Small Business Power, because today, they need us more than ever.

IN OPPOSITION:
MANCHESTER CITY MEET THE BOSS:
BRIAN BARRY-MURPHY Cork born, Barry-Murphy started his footballing career with his hometown club Cork City, in 1999 Preston North End signed him and he went on to play just short of 20 years in English football, most notably with Bury where he made more than 200 appearances, before concluding his playing career at Rochdale.
It was at Rochdale where Barry-Murphy got his first management position, when he took over as caretaker at Spotland in March 2019 following the sacking of Keith Hill and was given the full time position the following month. In June this year he resigned from his position at Rochdale following their relegation to League Two and a month later took over as manager for the Manchester City Elite Development Squad.

WE’VE MET BEFORE Only once before have Rovers met Manchester City in a Cup competition and it wasn’t that long ago. 21st September 2005, 16 years ago to the day of this fixture. A night that will live long in the memory for many Rovers fans. At a packed Belle Vue, we met in the second Round of the League Cup having overcome Wrexham in the first round. City were hotly tipped to steam roller Rovers; however, the Sky cameras were there showing the game live to capture an amazing evening that didn’t quite go the way as expected, a game shaped by penalties. After a goalless 90 minutes the game went into extra time, and after 95 minutes, City were awarded a penalty which Darius Vassell put away, a minute later Onuoha was given his marching orders after a coming together with Andy Warrington in the Rovers goal which led to him being stretchered off and replaced by Jan Budtz.
10
doncasterroversfc.co.uk
As the game was coming to an end and with two minutes to go, it was Rovers who were this time awarded a penalty as Distin was deemed to have handled, McIndoe confidently put the ball away to make it one each, which it remained, and it was now down to penalties. City's form deserted them drastically as McIndoe, James Coppinger and Paul Heffernan all scored for the Donny while Vassell hit the bar before Budtz became the hero and saved from Antoine Sibierski and Dunne to take the Rovers through 3-0 on penalties. Doncaster: Warrington (Budtz 105), McGuire, Stephen Roberts, Albrighton, McDaid, Coppinger, Predic (Ravenhill 52), Green, McIndoe, Fortune-West, Guy (Heffernan 81). Subs Not Used: Mulligan, Neil Roberts. Man City: James, Onuoha, Distin, Dunne, Thatcher, Jihai, Reyna (Jordan 90), Ireland, Hussein (Croft 65), Sibierski, Vassell. Subs Not Used: Sommeil, Richards, De Vlieger.
ONES TO WATCH COLE PALMER
Manchester born midfielder who loves to get forward, he’s already appeared in the Premier League this season, coming on as a sub in the opening day victory over Norwich City, add to this a Champions League and League Cup appearance last season. Palmer looks to have a solid future in the game and was also on target for the Under 21s in their previous Papa John’s Trophy Group game against Scunthorpe United.
CONRAD EGAN-RILEY
Another local lad who hass been at the club for over a decade, operating primarily at centre back, however can play right back ack and defensive midfield. A mainstay of the he 2019/20 title winning under 18 side at City, he will be looking to push and make a big name ame for himself
LUKE BOLTON
The Stockport born full back/winger ack/winger has already sampled football tball in the EFL, having had loan spells lls at Wycombe Wanderers and d Luton Town where he has made more e than 30 appearances, last season n was spent on loan with Dundee United ted in the Scottish Premiership, where ere he made 30 appearances in total. Another player to get on the scoresheet in City’s previous game at Scunthorpe

BEN BLYTHE Ben Blythe is one of a crop of young players to have come through the Rovers Academy and into the first-team over the past 12 months.
He slotted in alongside Tom Anderson and caught the eye against a side who had already secured automatic promotion.
The 19-year-old made his league debut against Peterborough United on the final day of last season.
“I had a taste of what the division is about at the end of last season, coming on against Peterborough on the final day,” he says.
He followed in the footsteps of Louis Jones, Branden Horton and AJ Greaves, who achieved the same milestone earlier in the campaign. Blythe believes seeing players he has played alongside at youth team level gave him the confidence that he could settle in quickly to senior football. “As soon as you come in and you already know players it makes things so much easier when you get in the team,” he says. “There are a lot of faces that I’ve known for a long time and we all push each other to be the best we can be. “Being around the lads for so long has helped me massively, I’m usually quite quiet off the pitch but that’s not the case when I’m among the group. “Travelling to away games and being on the bench has brought out a lot more of my personality. “I know I’m still a young lad but I feel like I’m part of the squad, there’s a few lads of a similar age to me. “I feel like I belong here, we all get on and we’re all together pushing in the same direction.” Having experienced playing at Sky Bet League One level, Blythe spent the weeks afterwards reflecting on his performance - both what he did well and where he could improve.
“Although they changed their team around they were still at the top end of the table and it was a good test. “I had an idea of where I need to be and the areas in which I need to focus on to get there.” One of Blythe’s biggest strengths is how comfortable he is in possession of the ball, and his ability to play out from the back. That is something that comes naturally to him, with the emphasis now on the defence to start attacks more than ever. He enjoys having the ball at his feet, and is working on his physicality in the gym to improve himself. “My strong point has always been playing out from the back, I’m not the biggest but that’s something I’m working on,” he says. “I like to get on the ball and play, my game will take care of itself as long as I keep working hard. “I can see a picture that maybe some players wouldn’t, and the pressure doesn’t really affect me. “You have to have a good mix in the centre back areas, with the physicality and footballing attributes to match.
“Ideally eally you want all of your players to be able to do both h but I think you have to mix and match it at times.” es.” With h Manchester City U21s the visitors to the Keepmoat epmoat Stadium in the Papa John’s Trophy on Tuesday sday night, Rovers are set to face some of the bestt young players in the country. Richie hie Wellens is set to rotate his squad with a league gue game coming up at Plymouth Argyle on Saturday. urday. Blythe the says it’s down to the players coming in to take their ir opportunity and put themselves forward for a run in the side. “We’re e’re coming up against a Manchester City team who o will have some of the best young players in the country,” ntry,” he adds. “Obviously bviously there’s a few of us that are the same age as them hem so it’s a really good test of where we’re at. m really interested to come up against their centre “I’m backs ks on Tuesday and see what strengths and aknesses they have. weaknesses e manager doesn’t hide anything from anyone “The and he’ll tell you exactly how he sees it. “If you’re doing well he’ll praise you, and if you’re not delivering to the standards he expects he will let you know.”
