"THE ATTITUDE AND COMMITMENT OF THE LADS IS NOT IN QUESTION THEY HAVE GIVEN EVERYTHING IN EVERY MATCH THIS SEASON, WHICH IS WHY WE SIT THIRD IN THE TABLE"
GRANT McCANN GOOD AFTERNOON AND WELCOME TO THE KEEPMOAT STADIUM FOR TODAY’S GAME AGAINST FLEETWOOD TOWN. I’D LIKE TO WELCOME JOEY BARTON AS WELL AS THE SUPPORTERS, PLAYERS AND STAFF OF THE VISITORS I am writing these notes after a narrow loss to Accrington Stanley, it was frustrating to lose our unbeaten run but the difference was they took their best chance of the game whereas we were unable to. Stanley are a very good side who are now unbeaten in nine matches, and I can absolutely see them being right up there among the play-off positions come the end of the season. The attitude and commitment of the lads is not in question - they have given everything in every match this season, which is why we sit third in the table. We will have a reaction today as we look for three points and build on our good start.
I’d like to thank you for your backing recently, with good numbers travelling both to Plymouth and Accrington. Everyone here appreciates the effort put in to back us and will give everything to reward that today and throughout the season. I was pleased to pick up the Manager of the Month award for September, but I’m not that interested in any accolades at this point in the season. We are pleased with where we are in the table, but it only really matters if we are still right up here come May. Enjoy the game.
There will be twists and turns over the season. As much as I’d love us to win every game, it is not realistic to do that and the best teams react and come back strong. That is the challenge for us now.

"NOTHING IS WON AT THIS POINT IN THE CAMPAIGN AND WE SAW ON TUESDAY NIGHT THAT THERE ARE GOING TO BE SOME REAL CHALLENGES IN THE COMING MONTHS"
GAVIN BALDWIN GOOD AFTERNOON, AND WELCOME BACK TO THE KEEPMOAT STADIUM. I’D LIKE TO EXTEND A WARM WELCOME TO THE OWNERS, SUPPORTERS, PLAYERS AND STAFF OF FLEETWOOD TOWN. I have to start by offering by congratulations to Grant McCann and John Marquis after they picked up the manager and player of the month awards for September. They are both well-deserved recognition after a start to the season both can be proud of. John has been magnificent for us this season, though it was great to hear him in his interviews this week saying the trophy was as much for his team-mates as himself. As Grant has made clear, though, nothing is won at this point in the campaign and we saw on Tuesday night that there are going to be some real challenges in the coming months. Rest assured that everyone at the club is working hard to ensure this good start is built upon.
of exciting funfair attractions and entertainment from our partners Trax FM. One addition this year is the Marie Curie Firewalk, with brave participants raising money for the cancer charity. A number of our staff have already signed up, and I am sure we will end up with many thousands of pounds raised for a good cause. Advance tickets are on sale now from the Box Office for £3, or just £2 if you have a DNA Card. Family tickets (two adults and two children) are £6. You can also get them from tickets.clubdoncaster.co.uk. Enjoy the game.
We’ve also confirmed this week that we will again host Doncaster’s biggest fireworks display on Monday November 5 here at the Keepmoat Stadium. We will have two firework displays, along with the usual array

ISSUE 08 v FLEETWOOD TOWN
Y T T A M BLAIR MATTY BLAIR HAD TO BE PATIENT FOR A PLACE IN THE ROVERS STARTING XI AT THE BEGINNING OF THE 2018/19 CAMPAIGN. Injuries to fellow midfielders Tommy Rowe and Ali Crawford created the pathway for Blair to stake his claim for a regular spot in Grant McCann’s side - and boy has he claimed it. “It’s been a very positive start to the season for us, I think there are games where we could have had more points which is a positive way of looking from the position we find ourselves in,” he says. “I think we’ve won the games we have deservedly, the game we lost at Burton and ones we’ve drawn we feel we should have won. “The mentality within the group is one of the main reasons why we haven’t lost too many games, there have been times where we’ve been under pressure but come out the other side. “Goals change games and it can swing the momentum in a different way, if you don’t concede when under pressure and score when you’re on top is so important.” Blair has added goals to his game this season and has struck at key times, putting Rovers in front in games against Luton Town and Plymouth Argyle, as well as adding the gloss to an away win at Walsall. The 29-year-old believes strikes from all around the team could prove to be key if Rovers are to continue their challenge at the top end of the Sky Bet League One.

“I think I’ve done well since I came in to the side, I always give everything and keep going. It was unfortunate that Tommy Rowe and Ali Crawford got injured but it’s given me a chance to stay in the team,” he says. “It’s a squad game and we’re all going to be needed at some point during the season, it’s down to me to impress the gaffer and try to show what I’m capable of. “It’s always nice to score, getting on the scoresheet is very rewarding and I’m in a position that allows me to get around the pitch and be more active in a forward area. “I think it’s an area that demands goals and assists, it’s important that we’re not just relying on our front three to get us goals. “The manager wants us to shoot when we get an opportunity, even if it’s half a chance it can ricochet in to the path of someone else. Having that ruthless edge is massive, they are the fine lines that get you results.” The No.17 has played in several different positions since joining Rovers from Mansfield Town in the summer of 2016. He has been used in a more central role by Grant McCann so far this season, rather than in the wide areas where Rovers fans had been used to seeing him ply his trade.
10
ISSUE 08 v FLEETWOOD TOWN
“Because I’m playing in a more central role it requires more touches in and around players whereas before I was on the wing and was only subject to half the pitch,” he says. “Running beyond people is still required in the position I’m in now and there have been times where I’ve had to adapt and do things differently. “I think everyone including the manager knows that I will play wherever I’m needed, as long as I’m helping the team do well. “We have a lot of competition for places, particularly
"THE MENTALITY WITHIN THE GROUP IS ONE OF THE MAIN REASONS WHY WE HAVEN’T LOST TOO MANY GAMES"
in midfield, so everyone is pushing each other to keep improving and not sit off.” Rovers have added a key element to their game which has been one of the biggest routes to success. They have the ability to frustrate the opposition, whether that be by keeping the ball when in possession or breaking up play when out of it. “Ben Whiteman missed the Plymouth game because of five yellow cards, but he’s been outstanding in breaking up counter attacks from other teams,” he says. “He’s probably made 15 to 20 tackles in games where we look to be threatened, and that is better than conceding a goal at the end of it. “I’ve found myself doing it as well at times, other midfielders like Herbie Kane aren’t afraid to do it either which is good. “The little things in games make massive differences, and it’s being streetwise within the rules of the games at times.” The win at Walsall last month was one of the highlights of four straight wins in September, in a game which
"THE LITTLE THINGS IN GAMES MAKE MASSIVE DIFFERENCES, AND IT’S BEING STREETWISE WITHIN THE RULES OF THE GAMES AT TIMES" saw Rovers end the Saddlers’ unbeaten start to the campaign. “The Walsall game was a different style of game, as a team you can sense when the opposition are getting frustrated,” Blair says. “We just kept doing the things that were frustrating them, which lead to them making mistakes and silly challenges and that cost them goals. “That was another type of scenario we were put in as a group, we knew we had them on the ropes so to speak and managed to capitalise on that.” This afternoon’s game against Fleetwood Town sees Blair go up against one of his former clubs, and he looks back fondly on his time with the Cod Army. “It’s an exciting time for Fleetwood as a football club, it’s great to see them doing well. Joey Barton is a high profile manager and they’ve started well,” he adds. “They’ve brought in some experienced players, it will be a very tough game and we have to make sure we prepare well for it. “The club is a bit of a fairytale when you look at where they’ve come from, they’re now an established league club who are looking to get into the Championship. “It all comes from the people behind the scenes that you don’t hear much from, and then the players are there doing the business on the pitch. “It’s a fantastic set up at the stadium and the training ground, I really enjoyed my time there and I do wish them all the best.”

FOUR T FLEETWOOD TOWN
ALEX CAIRNS TOP STOPPER
01
The Doncaster-born stopper was given the number one jersey over the summer having established himself between the sticks at Highbury over the past couple of seasons. Cairns began his career with Leeds United, although he failed to break through into the first team at Elland Road, instead spending time away on loan with non-league sides Barrow and Stalybridge Celtic. Brief stints with Chesterfield and Rotherham United followed, before he joined the Cod Army in July 2016, where he kept 34 clean sheets across his first two seasons with the club.
KYLE DEMPSEY MIDFIELD MAESTRO
08
The midfielder signed a permanent deal with the Cod Army last summer from Huddersfield Town following a successful loan move the year before. Dempsey came through the ranks at the Carlisle United youth academy, before being spotted by the Terriers in 2015. He featured 24 times for Huddersfield in his first season, scoring once in the Championship, before his initial temporary switch to Fleetwood for the 2016/17 season which would see him help them to reach the League One playoffs. Dempsey played in all but one of Fleetwood’s 46 league games last season, and he is looking to be an influential figure in their midfield once again this campaign.

O WATCH TOMMY SPURR DEFENSIVE ROCK
06
The man on loan from Preston North End needs little introduction to Rovers fans after being a part of the League One title winning side of 2012/13. Spurr joined Rovers in 2011 following seven years with South Yorkshire rivals Sheffield Wednesday. Spurr made 65 appearances for Rovers in the league, initially joined whilst they were in the Championship, before becoming an instrumental figure at the back in their title-winning season in 2013. Spurr left shortly after the win at Griffin Park on the final day, joining Blackburn Rovers on a two-year deal, before making a move across Lancashire to join Preston. The defender linked up with Joey Barton’s Fleetwood over the summer, making a season-long loan move to the Cod Army from the Lilywhites.
PADDY MADDEN DEADLY STRIKER
17
The Irishman signed for the Cod Army back in January and made an instant impact after scoring the winner just six minutes into his debut in a 2-1 victory away at Southend United. Madden is best known perhaps for his time with Yeovil Town during the 2012/13 season, where he scored 22 goals in 35 games in League One as he helped the Glovers to promotion alongside Rovers, via the play-offs, to the Championship. Madden joined Fleetwood from Scunthorpe United, where shortly before his departure from Glanford Park he would enter the top 10 in the all-time scoring records for the Iron.

THREE PLAYERS WHO HAVE PLAYED FOR ROVERS AND FLEETWOOD IN RECENT HISTORY WENT DOWN IN COD ARMY FOLKLORE AFTER BEING PART OF THE SQUAD THAT REACHED LEAGUE ONE FOR THE FIRST EVER TIME IN 2014. Current Rovers midfielder MATTY BLAIR was joined by former loan men JON PARKIN and IAIN HUME over on the Fylde coast during the 2013-14 season which would see Fleetwood promoted at Wembley Stadium via the League Two play-off final, following a 1-0 win over Burton Albion thanks to an Antoni Sarcevic free-kick in the 75th minute. Blair would collect his third winners medal in three attempts at the national stadium in the play-off victory, having previously played and scored in both the FA Trophy final and the Conference Premier play-off final during the 2011-12 season with York City, going on to be named in the Conference Team of the Year after that successful campaign. The now-Rovers midfield man would go on to repeat his League Two promotion exploits here at the Keepmoat Stadium three years later, helping Rovers to seal promotion back to League One at the first attempt, scoring three times and becoming a popular figure amongst the Rovers faithful in the process. Hume would claim his second promotion in two seasons in the win at Wembley, where he would play 86 minutes in the final, following his League One title win with Rovers the previous year. The Canadian international only featured 11 times for the Cod Army following his loan move from Preston North End towards the end of the season, scoring once, but he would prove to be a lucky charm in yet another promotion success for the forward. He played 36 times during his time in DN4, scoring seven goals, and like Blair, quickly became a fan favourite amongst Rovers fans, with many hoping he would make his time in Doncaster a permanent one. Hume was involved in the Rovers squad on that dramatic final day at Griffin Park in April 2013, playing 77 minutes before being replaced by Billy Paynter, who would go on to play a vital role in the title-winning goal. Following the play-off success with Fleetwood, Hume joined Indian Super League side Kerala Blasters, before a move back to England with his first club Tranmere Rovers. Hume has spent the last few years travelling around the world in search of first-team

football, including a spell at Spanish side Ponferradina, before returning to India, firstly winning the ISL title with Atletico de Kolkata, before a return to Kerala. This year he signed for Pune City, also of the ISL, where he looks to add to his individual honours of Hero of the League and a place in the Team of the Year from his previous seasons. Parkin, meanwhile, would play just a handful of times for Rovers, joining on-loan from Cardiff City in 2011, making his debut in Dean Saunders’ first game in charge, a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace, going on to make four more appearances in red and white before his return to South Wales. Loan spells with Huddersfield Town and Scunthorpe United followed, before his move to Fleetwood in 2012, where he would spend two years at Highbury Stadium, culminating with the play-off success, scoring 22 goals in 62 appearances for the Cod Army. Parkin would finish his time at Fleetwood by playing the final 15 minutes of the win over Burton, replacing Blair straight after the goal from Sarcevic. Spells with Forest Green Rovers and Newport County followed, before his move to York City in 2017, returning to Bootham Crescent for the first time since 2004, showing his EFL experience in nonleague with the Minstermen, scoring 41 goals in his first two seasons with the club. Alex Gibbings
MEMORABLE MATCH FLEETWOOD TOWN
FEBRUARY 17 2018
Rovers cruised to victory against Fleetwood Town in a one-sided affair at the Keepmoat Stadium last season. The hosts made a blistering start to the game, and within the first 15 minutes they were ahead, and it was special goal for the player who grabbed the opener. John Marquis’ burst down the left saw him able to slide the ball across goal to Alex Kiwomya, and he slotted the ball under Alex Cairns to give Rovers the lead. It would be Kiwomya’s first goal in a Rovers shirt, and on his longawaited home debut after spending the majority of the season out with an auto-immune disease, meaning that the goal had an added edge to it for Rovers. Fleetwood tried to get a hold in the game after their slow start, and Ashley Hunter went close to pulling the Cod Army level, with a corner only being cleared as far as the forward, but his shot went just wide of the post. Marquis, meanwhile, was again involved as Rovers doubled their lead as the game edged towards the halfhour mark. His free-kick was drilled low and parried out by Cairns, but only as far as Tom Anderson, and he put the ball under the Fleetwood corner and into the net to extend the lead.
Andy Boyle and Alfie Beestin were next to go close either side of the break, with Boyle having a header saved at the back post by Cairns, before Beestin’s onetwo with James Coppinger seeing him free up space to shoot across goal, but his effort would only flick off the post and away from danger. Rovers did get the third they had deserved just 10 minutes after the break, as Coppinger laid the ball off to Tommy Rowe, with the midfielder cutting the ball onto his left foot and crossing into the area. Rowe guided
the ball onto the head of Anderson, who’s diving header nestled in the corner and sealed all three points for Rovers, with 35 minutes of the second half still to play. Marquis tried to get himself on the scoresheet late on as he flashed a shot wide, before Jordy Hiwula found Marko Marosi at his best, with the Slovakian keeper getting down brilliantly to the Fleetwood striker’s low drive, palming the ball away and ensuring that he and Rovers would keep a clean sheet and secure their first win of 2018.
WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?
Rovers faced local rivals Rotherham United the following week, losing in dramatic fashion with the Millers scoring twice in 13 minutes of added time, with the winner coming with literally the last kick of the game. They would bounce back from that however by going on a six-game unbeaten run, which included wins over Bradford City, Blackpool and Milton Keynes. Rovers failed to win their last six games of the season, but did secure League One football for another season after a goalless draw away at Oldham Athletic. Defeat at Doncaster was Fleetwood’s seventh consecutive loss in all competitions, and it resulted in Uwe Rosler losing his job in the immediate aftermath of the game at the Keepmoat Stadium. The Cod Army brought in John Sheridan to steady the ship, and he did a brilliant job to steer Fleetwood away from danger, embarking on a seven-game unbeaten run between March and April, winning four and drawing three. Just before the end of last season, it was announced that former Premier League midfielder Joey Barton would take charge for this campaign, with the job at Fleetwood being his first step in management.

NUMBERS GAME PERHAPS SURPRISINGLY, THERE HAVE BEEN ONLY SIX WEARERS OF THE NO. 6 SHIRT SINCE SQUAD NUMBERS WERE FIRST ALLOCATED AT THE START OF THE 2002-03 SEASON. THREE OF THE SIX GAVE LONG AND VALUED SERVICE TO THE CLUB, WHILE TWO OTHERS WERE MEMBERS OF A TEAM WHICH WON A LEAGUE ONE TITLE. The first man given the squad number 6 was MARK ALBRIGHTON (2002-2006). A no-nonsense central defender ‘Brighty’ arrived from Telford United with considerable experience in non-League football and although hampered by injury he made a solid contribution to Rovers’ return to the Football League at the end of his debut season. His inclusion in the side the following season, as defensive partner to Steve Foster, coincided with Rovers embarking on an excellent run which saw them go top of the Division Three table. Indeed, he became a key member of a miserly defence which conceded only 37 goals as Rovers won the Third Division championship. The following season he lost his place to Nick Fenton, but not before his involvement in an incident which conferred on him legendary status. During a pre-season ‘friendly’ with Kevin Keegan’s Manchester City that was anything but friendly, ‘Brighty’ took exception to a young Joey Barton aiming a kick at a grounded Paul Green. He grabbed Barton by the throat and made it pretty clear that such antics would not be tolerated. He moved to Boston United in 2006 and is still active in non-League football with Bedworth United. The next No. 6 was KEVIN HORLOCK (2006-08) whose time with Rovers was sadly disrupted by a series of injuries. At the start of the 2008-09 season newly promoted Rovers signed JAMES CHAMBERS (2008-12) whose Leicester City side had just been relegated to League One. A versatile player who could operate at full-back or midfield, Chambers was a valuable addition to Sean O’Driscoll’s squad. He was a regular in both 2008-09 and 2009-10, starting in 43 League games in the latter season. Unfortunately a serious knee injury meant he played little in 2010-11 and not at all in 2011-12. He did, however, move on to Walsall where he was able to continue his career until retiring from the professional game in 2015. The next No. 6 was an attacking midfielder acquired from Bradford City in the summer of 2012. DAVID SYERS (2012-14) made 32 League appearances in the 2012-13 season as Rovers won the League One title on the final day in dramatic fashion. Syers had little involvement the following season and after a loan spell at Scunthorpe United he moved there permanently in January 2014. For the following
season, with Rovers back in League One, the No. 6 shirt passed on to JAMIE McCOMBE (2014-15), rather a fringe player by then but when wearing No. 16 a key part of that title winning side of 2012-13. Perhaps the most notable No. 6 since 2002 is its current wearer, club captain ANDY BUTLER (2015-present). He arrived during the 2014-15 season from Sheffield United, originally wearing the No. 16 vacated by McCombe. He began sporting the No. 6 at the start of 2015-16, a season which saw Rovers fall into League Two for the first time since 2004. Doncasterborn Butler, who had made over 400 senior appearances for clubs including Scunthorpe United, Huddersfield Town and Walsall, was a key player as Rovers won back their League One status at the first time of asking in 2016-17. Widely praised and rewarded for his work in the community, Andy Butler has, at the time of writing made 180 senior appearances for his home town club. He will surely come to be regarded as one of Doncaster Rovers’ greats. JOHN COYLE

"THERE HAVE BEEN EXCELLENT PERFORMANCES THROUGHOUT THIS RUN, NONE MORE SO THAN FROM RIEVES BOOCOCK WHO HAS SCORED 11 GOALS IN EIGHT GAMES"
KIERAN SCARFF AS ALWAYS IT IS A VERY BUSY TIME WITHIN THE ACADEMY PROGRAMME. THERE HAVE BEEN A NUMBER OF RECENT HIGHLIGHTS ALONG WITH PLENTY OF THINGS TO LOOK FORWARD TO IN THE NEAR FUTURE. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Tom Sutton, our lead foundation phase coach, for his organisation of the signing day for our new U9s. The day was built around the first team’s victory over Bradford City. All our young players had a tremendous day and will take away many positive memories. We look forward to them having many more. In the youth development phase, Tony Mee is busy providing a challenging games programme for our U13-U16s and we fully expect this to provide the level of opportunity to ensure players continue to develop through large chunks of our programme. I am delighted that Branden Horton has been offered his first professional contract. Branden thoroughly deserves this reward for many years of hard work and commitment. He has real potential and we all look forward to seeing his hard work continue as he strives to fulfil his potential. The awarding of a first professional contract is one that all players remember. I fully expect others to follow and provide further real evidence that we provide a clear pathway and genuine opportunities for our young players.
The youth team have continued their excellent start to the season. They currently sit top of the Youth Alliance with four wins and two draws. There have been excellent performances throughout this run, none more so than from Rieves Boocock who has scored 11 goals in eight games (all competitions) with eight coming in his last three games! This is an outstanding achievement. By the time you read these notes our young professionals will have played their first game in the Premier League U21 Cup, with a Friday night game away at Everton. We have been drawn in a group that also includes Blackburn and Sheffield United. The games will be played home and away and will provide excellent opportunities for the youngsters as they continue their development. Good luck to the gaffer, staff and players ahead of today’s game.

COMMERCIAL GOOD AFTERNOON AND WELCOME TO THE KEEPMOAT STADIUM AS WE LOOK TO EXTEND OUR IMPRESSIVE RUN OF FORM AGAINST JOEY BARTON’S FLEETWOOD TOWN. Last Saturday’s performance was a very pleasing one, and to go down to Home Park and put in such an accomplished display was encouraging, as is the form of John Marquis and goal scoring midfielder Matty Blair. Our visitors today have had an indifferent start to the season, winning three, losing three and drawing four of their first 10 league games of the season. We are honoured to be joined today by our match sponsor, Bawtry Sports Village. The new development is planned for 100 acres of space just off the Great North Road in Bawtry, with the complex intended to have football pitches, a first class tennis club capable of holding Championship standard events, in addition to a range of

other developments including a country club and luxury residential homes. The design brief for the professional planning
consultants enlisted on the works so far was to create a world class location where sport, social life and nature blend in harmony with each other. We wish them the best of luck with their plans and hope that they have a great time with us here today. The season is well under way now and we have a range of ways that you can get involved with Club Doncaster on a commercial level, whether through Official Partnership, sponsorship or advertising.

SAFETY Three points is not the only priority today. Making sure everyone goes home safe is the most important result. Over recent months we have been working closely with the police and the EFL to review security at the Keepmoat Stadium. Now we are asking you to do your bit. It is vital that everyone - players, staff and supporters - remains vigilant and reports any concerns to stewards or police. Attacks might be rare, and the chance of you being caught up in one unlikely, but the message is ACT #ActionCountersTerrorism. Rovers safety officer Sam Ramsden said:
AD-105x148-Football Foundation.indd 1
"We want everyone to enjoy today’s game at the Keepmoat Stadium but if you see anything that causes you concern, tell a steward or staff member. Please do not worry that you might be wasting our time. "The stewards are here to help keep us all safe so please be patient and cooperate with their instructions. When it comes to security it has to be a team effort and we are all players." Here's a quick reminder of what you can do to help keep yourself and others safe: • Arrive early, allowing more time for security checks • Minimise what you carry, fewer bag searches will speed up entry to the ground
• Be vigilant at all times and if you see anything suspicious, tell a steward right away • If you see anything that could pose an immediate threat to safety, call 999 • In an emergency, listen to the public address instructions and follow them • If told to evacuate, do so immediately, do not wait around to film events on your mobile • Move right away from the stadium as quickly as possible for your safety and to allow clear access for any emergency vehicles • Once you are safe, follow the local police force on Twitter for updates To find out more, visit gov.uk/ACT or @TerrorismPolice

SUPPORTER LIAISON OFFICER DEAN MEDCALF GOOD AFTERNOON LADIES AND GENTLEMEN AND A WARM WELCOME KEEPMOAT STADIUM TO THE VISITING FANS FROM FLEETWOOD TOWN. I would like to thank all the Rovers fans who made the recent journeys to Plymouth and Accrington, I hope you all had a safe journey and enjoyed the games. One of the most important parts of my role is creating relationships up with other clubs SLOs and one club that I have built a very good relationship with is the team at Lincoln City. Following Lincolns promotion back to the football league two seasons ago, they were required under UEFA rules to appoint an SLO. I was contacted by former Rovers chief operating officer Liam Scully, to see if I would mind chatting to a few people who he had lined up to take the role on at Lincoln City. I shared a few emails with a gentleman by the name of Alan Long, who was in line to being appointed in the SLO role. I said at the time that he was more than welcome to come across and visit us to see how we did it and it was great that he took me up on that offer. The Imps went on from this and appointed a team of five to carry out the role. With a weekend spare, Alan asked if he fellow SLOs Lyndsey and Heidi could come and visit. When the team arrived we sat down for a chat to discuss how we carry out the role at DRFC and to talk about the issues we have both faced in the role so far. I am in my fifth year as an SLO and I wanted to share my experiences and the challenges that I have faced over
this time. We found that many of the challenges we discussed have at some time been shared by the two clubs, so it was interesting to see how these were faced and what the outcomes were. We then headed outside to have a look around the Keepmoat Stadium, with Lincoln looking to move into a new stadium in the future, Alan, Lyndsey and Heidi were looking forward to seeing the great facilities we have and to pick up some ideas that they could feedback. After the match, we sat down to discuss the day and I wanted to gain some feedback from the team on what they liked about my match day role and if they had any ideas on the ways I could improve. We
had a good chat and the guys really enjoyed their visit and found it very beneficial. It is really important in my opinion to build these relations to help each other out and to pick up new ideas. I remain in regular contact with the team and continue to build the relationship between the clubs. As always I hope you all enjoy today’s game, if you have any questions then please contact me on the usual SLO social media accounts, @SLO_DRFC on twitter, DRFC SLO on Facebook or you email me at dean.medcalf@ clubdoncaster.co.uk. IT’S GREAT TO SEE THE FAMILY AREA ARE SUCH AS SUCCESS, WITH ACTIVITIES SUCH AS FACE PAINTING, PENALTY SHOOT OUTS AND COMPUTER GAMES FOR THE VISITING SUPPORTERS.
We are on a roll at the moment and had a brilliant away victory at Walsall followed by home wins over Luton and Bradford City The notes were written pre Plymouth, so let’s hope the long journey to the West Country was fruitful. Grant has moulded a team into something that is a joy to watch. Thanks to the fans that supported the Supporters Club boat trip along the River Don last Sunday, everyone seemed to have a great time, also to the fans that made the trip to Plymouth for the weekend. If you have any suggestions of any social events you would like the Supporters Club to arrange please ask. Our next away trip is to Rochdale on Saturday October 13. Coaches leave Retford 11.15am, Harworth 11.20am, Bawtry/Rossington 11.30am, Infirmary 11.45am, Waterdale 11.50am and Keepmoat car park one 12noon. Our North Branch also run coaches to most away games, departing from the Askern, Adwick, Campsall and A19 corridor (Sun Inn), please support this coach, contact on 07780-316923, the Branch is also doing a weekend coach to the Sunderland game. The Supporters Club will soon have the Christmas draw tickets on sale, anyone wanting to help sell them on our behalf willbe most welcome. Fans in the West Stand over the past few games, will have noticed that one of the exit’s has been closed, causing problems for fans, but thankfully the authorities have listened to you and overruled their decision meaning the exit is now back open. Thanks to the club for taking this up, after request from the Supporters Board, which works on your behalf, and has members of the Supporters Clubs and VSC within their ranks. If you have an issue, please don’t hesitate to ask. Don’t forget the Supporters Club shop situated in the Club Doncaster Academy has a vast collection of programmes for sale, and you can book your away travel as well. OR phone Paul on 07961727769 or Len on 01302 817347 after 6pm to book seats, cut off is Wednesday night for Saturday games Sunday for Tuesday games. Thanks for your support. Rovers Till We Die Paul Mayfield
VIKING SUPPORTERS CO-OPERATIVE Football is the national game, and football supporters are the lifeblood of the game. While many privately owned football clubs are well run, ours included, there are numerous examples over the years where this model of ownership has failed the supporters of that club, and has led to a number of clubs becoming either partly or fully owned by those supporters. The Minister Of Sport set up the Expert Working Group with the intention of looking at ways to improve engagement and dialogue between clubs and fans, and therefore to improve transparency and trust. The detailed recommendations from the EWG led to the government instructing the EFL and the Premier League to enter into structured dialogue with those supporters, and especially with the supporters trust at that club. As you may be aware the club hold two Meet The Owners events each year which meet the criteria set down by the EFL. On top of that the club have a Supporters Board which meets on a regular basis during the season to discuss a very broad range of topics. Suffice to say that DRFC have not only met the requirements but have exceeded them in both frequency and content, and that is something we can once again be proud of. Martin O'Hara

FOUNDATION UP Club Doncaster Foundation’s Fit Rovers project raised £450 at the Nidge Roe Family Fun Day last Sunday. A day of activity including a football match with Doncaster Rovers legends and a huge DRFC themed raffle were hosted at Armthorpe Welfare to celebrate Nidge’s life after his sudden death in August. The funds raised will go towards the futures of Nidge’s sons Aaron and Ryan, who both played in the 11-a-side game. Fit Rovers course facilitator Scott Copeland said: “Nidge was instrumental to our community and we were all heartbroken by the sudden news back in August: I hope the family fun day was a reflection of what a wonderful bloke he was.

ISSUE 08 v FLEETWOOD TOWN
“It was great to see a host of organisations come together to celebrate his life, I know that he was an important part of all of them. We have to thank Armthorpe Welfare for providing the facilities and Wheatley Wanderers for giving the Fit Rovers lads a good game. “We have to, of course, thank Simon Marples, Tim Ryan, Jan Budtz, Ricky Ravenhill. Paul Green and Leo Fortune-West for their appearances too, they are the heroes for the Fit Rovers generation and they don’t know just how instrumental their support it. It shows what a fantastic family we have at Club Doncaster.” Tim Ryan added: “Doncaster Rovers is a massive part of some people’s lives and the family ethos of the club is evident, it was great to get the
boots back out with them and play for such a fantastic cause. “We’re all really proud of how the community came together and so pleased with the amount we raised for Aaron and Ryan.” Ryan, Marples, Budtz and Ravenhill all played in the large 11-a-side game alongside Fit Rovers participants, who shared their journey with Nidge. They played against Wheatley Wanderers, the side Nidge managed and whom his two young sons play for. Nidge was on the board of governors at Armthorpe Welfare, managed Wheatley Wanderers junior football team, volunteered at Retro Rovers walking football sessions and was a valued member of Club Doncaster Foundation’s Fit Rovers project.
DATE Rovers player Matty Blair dropped into Club Doncaster Sports College on Monday to welcome them into the new academic year. Fresh from yet another stunning goal at the weekend, the midfielder spoke about how he thought this season was going, his best career experiences and his advice for a successful future in a Q&A session with the new starters. This year becomes the third annual Q&A with the CDSC students hosted by Blair, and he explained how he always enjoys the experience. Matty said: “I love giving back to the community just as much as any other part of my job, I think it’s important that the students see that we’re not just about 90 minutes on a Saturday, especially those who are hopeful to carve a career in the sport.
“If I can inspire just one student I’ll be happy. They are all here because they are interested in sport and hopefully they go on to follow fantastic careers and maybe even take on a little bit of my advice.” A hot topic of the Q&A was Matty’s late arrival into the footballing world, which inspired many of the young 16/17 year olds who are aspiring to emulate his career. Matty told them: “I think the main thing that set me apart from the thousands of other non-league hopefuls back before I made it was that my mindset was always strong. “No matter what I did, whether it was 90 minutes on a Saturday or handing leaflets out in the middle of town for a bit of income, I always did it to the best of my ability and I always tried my absolute best.
“It doesn’t matter what you want to do in life or what you want to be, just go be the best at it and always put everything into it.” For more information about Club Doncaster Sports College, visit the website on www. clubdoncastersportcollege.co.uk / 01302 764663.
