THE MANAGER

THE MANAGER

DARREN MOORE Good afternoon and welcome back to the Keepmoat Stadium. I would like to welcome Kenny Jackett, as well as the fans, players and staff of Portsmouth who have made the long trip up from the south coast today. I had two great years at Fratton Park as a player, they are a great club and I’m sure Kenny will guide them to a really good campaign.

05

We also welcome back John Marquis. Although we did not want to lose John this summer, he conducted himself professionally throughout my time working with him and my staff and I wish him well going forward in his career. He has all the attributes to continue the fine goalscoring form he produced here at Rovers, though of course we hope he does not manage to find the back of the net against us today. Today we celebrate our 140th birthday. It is an honour to be first-team manager as we mark the anniversary, and I give you my word myself, my staff and players are giving everything we can to make the 140th year of Rovers one that we can all be proud of. To have represented Rovers as a player was a special achievement for me, but I’m not sure there are words to describe the pride I feel at being your manager - especially as we reflect on how far we have come since Albert Jenkins got some work-mates together for a game 140 years ago. I had such a warm welcome back this summer, and while there will be many challenges ahead to test us all we feel the hard work being put in by everyone is being rewarded with performances on the pitch. There is so much that goes into making a football club what it is. While you as supporters see the players on the pitch every Saturday or Tuesday, and the coaching staff alongside me in the dugout, there are many more who do not spend so much time in the limelight but are just as important in the running of the club. As you look around the ground today at your fellow supporters or club staff, you can feel a sense of pride that we are all working towards the same goal. Enjoy the game.

THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE

CHIEF EXECUTIVE

GAVIN BALDWIN Good afternoon and welcome back to the Keepmoat Stadium. I would like to welcome the supporters, owners, staff and players of Portsmouth who have travelled up today. I look forward to welcoming back a number of former players as we celebrate our 140th birthday - 140 years (and two days) ago the very first Rovers side played Rawmarsh in a match which finished 0-0. That was the first official Rovers side, having been created by Albert Jenkins and his workmates who decided to form a club after taking part in an informal match against the Deaf Institute. Much has changed over those 140 years, the Intake Ground was replaced by the Bennetthorpe Ground then Belle Vue followed by the Keepmoat Stadium - and in the years since our 2007 move to this ground we’ve seen the most remarkable growth in the club with some famous days - winning trophies at the Millennium Stadium and Wembley, plus days like that one at Brentford. We have developed an infrastructure - both here and at our training base at Cantley Park to compete with the best. We’ve still got a lot of room for growth, but this anniversary is chance to reflect on how far we have come. There has been an incredible growth in our community work as Club Doncaster Foundation and Club Doncaster Sports College have grown into incredible standalone organisations which would barely have seemed possible just 12 years

07

The club has enjoyed remarkable growth since 2007

ago when we left Belle Vue and all its memories behind. Come down to the Club Doncaster Sports Park any evening and you will see a hive of activity. In many ways we still walk in Albert’s footsteps today, and while close to a century and a half has passed since he an his colleagues formed the club there are still nice connections. Albert was a fitter at the Great Northern Railway (who became LNER in 1923) works, and our long history with the railway continues with the famous LNER initials still adorning the front of our shirts.

Rovers are an organisation full of incredible people giving their all and I am proud to come in every day to work with them. I hope we are doing justice to what Albert and his workmates created. I would also like to add my condolences on behalf of the club to the families of supporters Jack Tempest and Roger Hough who passed away recently. Enjoy the game.

FEATURE:

CAMERON JOHN Cameron John has taken to the EFL like a duck to water since arriving at Rovers on loan from Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers in the summer. 08

Despite missing the draw at Coventry City last weekend through injury, the 20-year-old has become a fans favourite given his solid defensive displays so far this season.

After playing the majority of his football with Rovers amongst a settled back four, John has enjoyed learning his trade from the more experienced players around him.

“It’s been a great couple of months so far, I’ve really enjoyed my time here and the amount of time I’ve had on the pitch has been really good,” he says.

He has particularly benefitted from working with and learning from his central defensive partner Tom Anderson both in training and in games.

“The club and the fans have really welcomed me in and that has helped me to settle in quickly which sometimes can be difficult.

“Tom has been great to have alongside me, he gives me a lot of advice and I feel I can learn a lot from him,” says John.

“I probably didn’t expect to play so much so early and thought it would take a little longer with the amount of experience we have here.

“He’s been solid this season and always seems to put himself in a position where he can make a challenge or a block.

“As my first loan it’s a good experience, I’ve had similar players around me throughout the season so far.”

“We’ve had a settled back four which has meant I’ve got used to playing with the same players and that is good for anyone my age.

10 “Having a stable back-line can really progress the team and if we have that all the way through the year it gives us a good chance of being successful. “Us being consistent and keeping it tight at the back means there is a better chance of our flare players winning games for us at the other end of the pitch.” Having already come up against some of the best strikers in Sky Bet League One this season, John feels he has had to show different sides to his game. The belief instilled in him by manager Darren Moore means he goes into every game with the confidence of getting the better of any opponent. “Every game has been a bit different, there are some really physical strikers at this level and others that have a lot of pace,” he says. “You have to be able to adapt and know your strengths in terms of picking the right battle to have, it’s been a good learning curve for me up to now. “Wolves keep in touch a lot and the staff back there have asked how I’m getting on, they come to a lot of my games as well so the feedback is always on hand.

JOHN

F E AT U R E I N T E R V I E W

“They have left me in good hands with a really good manager, he has already helped me a lot and I have a lot of trust in him and how he wants me to play and improve. “He gives you a lot of confidence and has the belief in what we can do, everyone enjoys that and he is a calming presence. “He doesn’t put too much pressure on us but each player knows that the responsibility is on us to go out there and perform for him.” As well as his defensive qualities, John has also chipped in at the other end of the pitch with two goals in a Rovers shirt so far. Strikes against Fleetwood Town and Lincoln City respectively mean he is currently one ahead of fellow Wolves loanee Niall Ennis, although he is in no doubt as to who will end the season on top in that particular battle. “I don’t really score too many goals and before this season I didn’t really go up for corners so that has been new for me as well,” he says. “It’s the first time I’ve been able to show what I can do in front of goal so hopefully that can continue and I can chip in with a few more. “I’m ahead of Niall right now but I know it’s a marathon rather than a sprint and he will definitely score more goals than me this season. “Personally it’s great to see him doing well and even when the goals aren’t

necessarily flowing he has been a real asset to the team. “He has been up there on his own holding the ball up and helping the side, he probably needs a scrappy goal to go in and then he will go on a run. “I feel like being involved in this sort of first-team environment will do myself and Niall the world of good.” With games coming up against teams predicted to be challenging for promotion this season, John says the Rovers squad still have improvement left in them after just one defeat in their opening nine league games. “Our next few games will give us a good indication of where we are at because we’re playing against teams who are fancied to be up there at the end of the season,” he adds. “We’ve had some really tough games to start the campaign off but managed to pick up some good results against some top teams. “We have a system in terms of the way we like to play and the manager wants us to stick to that no matter who we come up against. “We can handle ourselves and I don’t think we’ve been at our best yet, there is a lot more to come and we’re still in a really good position. “You can sense around the club that there is a real belief of doing well this season and improving on last year when they just missed out on promotion.”

CRAIG

MACGILLIVRAY Spells at Stalybridge Celtic and Harrogate Town earned the Scotsman a move into the EFL with Walsall in 2014. His time at the Bescot Stadium was followed by a move to Shrewsbury Town, before joining Portsmouth in June 2018. He made his Pompey debut that August, keeping a clean sheet in a 1-0 win over Luton Town. He featured in Portsmouth’s squad that won the 2018-19 Checkatrade Trophy – saving Lee Cattermole’s penalty in the shootout.

CHRISTIAN

BURGESS

Standing at 6ft 4in, Burgess is not to be taken lightly and has made himself part of the furniture in Pompey’s defensive backline over the last four years. He was one of Paul Cook’s signings when the former manager commenced with his overhaul of the squad which eventually went on to gain promotion to Sky Bet League One alongside Rovers in the 2016/17 season. In the same season Burgess and his team-mate Edna Stevens were confirmed as part of the League Two Team of the Year.

IN OPPOSITION

15

TOM

NAYLOR Captain Naylor has served a number of clubs in his 10-year career but has found a home in Portsmouth. He signed a three-year deal at Fratton Park in June 2018 after turning down a fresh deal at former side Burton Albion. He had to wait nine months into his career on the south coast until he was to score his first goal for the club which came in a 5-1 victory over Bradford City.

BRETT

PITMAN Brett Pitman made a name for himself after he was handed a professional deal with Bournemouth in 2005. Over the course of five years with the Cherries he made 173 appearances, scoring 59 goals along the way. Interest was rife for the forward who joined Bristol City in 2010. After netting 20 times over three years for the Robins he moved back to Bournemouth which was followed up by some time playing for Ipswich in the Sky Bet Championship. Kenny Jackett signed Pitman in July 2017 for an undisclosed fee. On his home debut he started to show his worth scoring in the club’s 2-0 win over Rochdale. He was later named League One player of the month for September 2017 and finished as the club's top goal scorer that season with 25 goals to his name.

IN OPPOSITION

ENDA STEVENS DEFENDER The Ireland international has had two loan spells at the Keepmoat Stadium. The first came in 2013 when he joined on a six-month loan from Aston Villla but moved to Northampton Town on loan in January. He retuned to Rovers’ left side of defence from Villa for the entire season in 2014/15. In 2015 he dropped to League Two to help Portsmouth’s promotion push – and he successfully did so winning the league in his first season. He then returned to South Yorkshire in 2017 signing for Chris Wilder’s Sheffield United. Stevens has now played at all four professional levels of English football with him now gracing the Premier League on a weekly basis playing for the Blades. PAUL DOWNING DEFENDER Downing knows League One like the back of his hand having played in this division for a long period of his career.

16

He guided Blackburn Rovers out of the division and played for them in the Championship. However with him lacking game time at the higher level and Doncaster Rovers requiring cover for defensive injuries he swapped one Rovers for another on loan for the latter end of the 2018/19 season. After guiding Doncaster to the play-offs – and losing out on penalties to Charlton in the semi-finals – he left Blackburn and agreed terms with Portsmouth, signing a three-year contract at Fratton Park. DAVID COTTERILL MIDFIELDER Swansea City loaned Cotterill out to their Championship rivals Portsmouth for a month in February 2011 where he scored on his debut in a 1-0 victory over Barnsley. He later extended his stay until the end of the season. The Bristol City youth product joined Rovers permanently on a two-year deal in June 2012, helping the club achieve promotion back to the Championship at the first time of asking. At the end of this season he was named in the PFA Team of the Year for League One. He scored his debut goal against Walsall which was a long-ranged effort from 40-yards out. When his two-year contract was up her joined Birmingham City.

SHARED 5-A-SIDE MILAN LALKOVIC FORWARD Lalkovic swapped his home of Slovakia for the Chelsea Academy in 2007 and in order to get a taste for men’s football was made available for loan in 2011. Rovers were the first club he played for in England. He made six appearances for the club before returning to Stamford Bridge. When he was released by Chelsea he moved to Mladá Boleslav in the Czech Republic, but was back in the UK a year later when he joined Barnsley. He signed a two-year contract with Portsmouth in June 2016 after moving from Walsall for an undisclosed fee. During his two-years at Fratton Park he made 14 appearances and scored one goal. JOHN MARQUIS FORWARD Marquis is fondly remembered in Doncaster for his goals. He regularly hit the back of the net after joining on a free transfer in the summer of 2016 quickly becoming a key part of the team which won automatic promotion back to League One. He picked up many accolades while living up north including League Two player of the year and the Golden Boot in 2016/17 after scoring 26 goals in 40 league games in his debut season. His form continued in League One and this summer he completed a move to the South Coast where he was reunited with Kenny Jackett, having previously worked with him at Millwall. He scored his first goal for the club in a 3-3 draw against Coventry City in August.

PAST RECORD PAST PASTRECORD RECORD

There have only been 22 competitive meetings between Rovers and Portsmouth, but they have been regular opponents recently as 12 of those clashes have come in the past decade. Rovers have had the edge in these clashes, claiming six wins, drawing four and only tasting defeat twice. Both games last season finished level, with a goalless draw here in August followed by Mallik Wilks getting on the scoresheet for Rovers in a 1-1 scoreline at Fratton Park in the reverse fixture. That 0-0 result last August was more notable than first meets the eye, though, given midfielder Ben Whiteman kept the first clean sheet of his career after going in goal when Marko Marosi was sent off with seven minutes of the match remaining. Rovers had made three changes so were unable to bring Ian Lawlor off the bench, with Whiteman stepping into a position he has thankfully not had to cover again. The past three meetings have all finished level - a 2-2 draw at Fratton Park in February 2018 saw debuts for Tom Anderson and Andy Boyle who were thrown together in the centre of defence owing to an injury crisis at the club - which ended a run of three straight Rovers wins. The most notable victories came in the 2016/17 season when Rovers claimed a double on the way to automatic promotion from League Two. John Marquis, now once again a Pompey player, was on the scoresheet for Rovers in both matches.

ROVERS MANAGERS

IN THE HOT SEAT:

DONCASTER ROVERS MANAGERS FROM 1920

BILL LEIVERS (1964-1966) Rovers had two managers between the departure of Norman Curtis in 1961 and the arrival of Bill Leivers. Danny Malloy was hired as player-manager for the 1961-62 season and although he proved to be a fine player, he struggled to motivate his team-mates. He resigned in March `1962 with Rovers heading for a re-election application. His replacement, the much-travelled Oscar Hold, managed two mid-table finishes despite having the prolific goalscoring duo Colin Booth and Alfie Hale at his disposal, along with the returning Alick Jeffrey after December 1964. The Rovers’ board decided that they wanted another player-manager, and so Hold’s rather underwhelming reign came to an end. A native of Bolsover, Bill Leivers had started his career with Chesterfield before moving to Manchester City in 1953. Leivers was a defender who was equally at home at right back or centre half. In 1956 he won a FA Cup winners' medal with City when they beat Birmingham City 3-1. He had a virtually new team at his disposal when he started his job in July 1964,only ten senior players remaining from the previous season. After a poor start to the campaign, Leivers brought in a number of new faces. He was helped by the fact that Alick Jeffrey had rediscovered his goalscoring touch. The Rovers’ legend, now restored to full fitness, was an everpresent and notched 36 of Rovers’ 84 League goals, the club’s best final tally since the 1946-47 season. The 1964-65 side was entertaining but ultimately unsuccessful but a 9th place finish and improved home attendances offered promise for the future. Leivers himself made a limited on-field contribution, injury restricting him to only 19 League appearances. Leivers’ side began the 1965-66 season with considerable optimism, reflected in two 10,000 plus crowds for the opening

games of the season. Rovers rewarded their fans with two 4-0 victories over Lincoln City and Hartlepools United. One of Leivers’ pre-season signings, centre forward Lawrie Sheffield, scored three in those two games. Sheffield’s partnership with Jeffrey was to be a key factor in Rovers’ eventual success that season. Leivers strengthened his squad by signing Bob Gilfillan, Tony Coleman and the outstanding defender John Nicholson, who became club captain. Despite an FA Cup exit at the hands of non-League Wigan Athletic, and a dip in form around Christmas, Rovers were handily placed in 6th at the start of February 1966. On 10th February 1966, supporters received a shock when it was announced that Leivers was leaving the club “by mutual consent.” Chairman Hubert Bates emphasised that Leivers had neither resigned nor been sacked, while Leivers himself said he had appreciated the support of his chairman. While Leivers took up a new job as a car salesman, Rovers fans were left to speculate as to why a manager who had apparently turned their club around had left so abruptly. Subsequently it transpired that Leivers had left “because of continual disagreement over my team selections.” The smoking gun had at last been discovered, and the hand that pulled the trigger appeared to be that of chairman Bates. Bill Leivers went on to enjoy some managerial success. After a year at Workington he became manager of ambitious Cambridge United. He led them to the Southern League title two years running and in 1970 they were elected into the Football League. Leivers took United to promotion from Division Four in 197273 and after leaving the Abbey Stadium he managed Chelmsford City and Cambridge City before retiring in 1989. John Coyle

THE ACADEMY

Academy education officer Nathan Fawley says that his role focuses on developing Rovers Academy players to ensure they become excellent young men as well as excellent football players. With the help of Academy psychologist Dr Tom Mitchell, a curriculum has been designed to support the Youth Development Phase players (age 14-16) on and off the pitch throughout their time at the football club. Nathan said: “We aim to use an holistic approach with regards to off field training through the use of classroom sessions in which players will focus on a different life skill every four weeks. This culminates in the delivery of classroom-based sessions in which the players discuss and complete tasks around a focused life skill. “We cover lots of aspects such as communication, teamwork and confidence. All follow the theme of the eight pillars programme that has been implemented by Dr Mitchell with regards to his work in sports psychology. “We look at how they can be applied to football but also to other walks of life. All of the pillars have strong links to education.” Not only is Nathan responsible for preparing and delivering lessons, he works closely with the youth team players to ensure that their education outside of the club remains at a high standard. He added: “I help the players ensure that they are on track with their school work, attitude and behaviour and build strong links with schools and parents. “My overall aim is to help the players use the life skills to develop a well-rounded approach to their everyday life and become respected members of a modern day society of which they represent the club at the heart of it. “It helps prepare them with the skills needed for further study and even life beyond football.”

JUNIOR ROVERS

Hello everyone! Welcome to today’s game against Portsmouth and thank you for making the journey. Special thanks to everyone who was involved in the first of my #DD20 celebrations. I did not beat Peter Burrow (at least the team did), but after watching the video I have been shown what I should have done. Thanks Howard for this photo of me in action. I look forward to the rest of our fun packed activities!

Enjoy the game, Donny Dog

DONCASTER BELLES

Belles head coach Zoey Shaw felt the Belles made it all too easy for their opponents after a third away defeat in a row in the FAWNL Division One Midlands. The Belles saw themselves head into the break against league leaders Wolves Women level at 2-2 before the hosts ran away with it in the second half, eventually winning 7-2 at the CKW Stadium, and Shaw wants her side to move on quickly from the defeat.

The Belles are on the road again next weekend as they travel to Division One North side ChesterLe-Street Ladies in the second qualifying round of the Women’s FA Cup, and Shaw feels a shift in focus could be a good thing for her side.

“It was a real game of two halves, we came in at 2-2 thinking we’d done a good job of containing them but then to come back out and then end up conceding five after the break, it’s disappointing,” she said.

“It’ll be a refreshing change for us next week just to have a little break away from the league with the trip to Chester-Le-Street, as a manager you enjoy looking forward to the potential of a cup run, especially in the FA Cup,” she added.

“We need to try and eliminate the little mistakes that we’ve made in our play, we came out in the second half and just seemed to lose all the confidence that we had built up, credit to Wolves because they’re a great side that punished us here. “We made it all too easy for them at times, they’ve shown why they are at the top of the league, but we helped them out a lot here, we need to get back to winning ways and get more points on the board very quickly to move on.”

“It’s an opportunity for us now to go away and reflect once again on where we can do better and what we can do to change things, hopefully the girls can go into next weekend eager to put things right and get an important win. “Of course we want to make sure that we get our league form up to scratch, but if the next game helps to give the players’ minds a bit of a break then maybe a switch in focus could be what the girls need.”

"If the next game helps to give the players’ minds a bit of a break then maybe a switch in focus could be what the girls need"

Good afternoon and welcome back to the Keepmoat Stadium as we celebrate our 140th birthday by welcoming Portsmouth Football Club to South Yorkshire. Our visitors today will be in high spirits following their victory against Bolton last weekend. Sitting just outside the play-offs with two games in hand, Darren Moore’s side are really impressing this season though, with a string of energetic performances. Let’s hope we can see more of the same today as we look to kick October off strong. We are delighted to welcome today’s match sponsor, Official Partner Bidfood. Bidfood is one of the largest food wholesalers in the UK, which is made up of four divisions: foodservice, fresh, processing and logistics. Together, all divisions provide the foodservice and hospitality industry with a complete range of food and non-food products. Linking the distribution of more than 20,000 products to more than 15,000 customers. Also joining us this afternoon is today’s matchball sponsors, the Crown Hotel. The Crown Hotel, Bawtry, Doncaster, is the leading luxury hotel in the Doncaster region. Set in the heart of Bawtry, the beautiful Georgian market town, on the Yorkshire and Nottingham border. We hope both today’s sponsors have a fantastic time with us today in the Jibba Jabba hospitality lounge, and let’s hope for three points to round off the day! You too can celebrate in style with Doncaster Rovers by sponsoring a game, enjoying hospitality with family and friends or learning more about the Official Partnerships here at Club Doncaster. If you would like more information, please contact the commercial team in 01302 764665 / commercial@clubdoncaster.co.uk

SAFETY Three points is not the only priority today. Making sure everyone goes home safe is the most important result. Over recent months we have been working closely with the police and the EFL to review security at the Keepmoat Stadium. Now we are asking you to do your bit. It is vital that everyone - players, staff and supporters - remains vigilant and reports any concerns to stewards or police. Attacks might be rare, and the chance of you being caught up in one unlikely, but the message is ACT #ActionCountersTerrorism. Rovers safety officer Sam Ramsden said:

"We want everyone to enjoy today’s game at the Keepmoat Stadium but if you see anything that causes you concern, tell a steward or staff member. Please do not worry that you might be wasting our time. "The stewards are here to help keep us all safe so please be patient and cooperate with their instructions. When it comes to security it has to be a team effort and we are all players." Here's a quick reminder of what you can do to help keep yourself and others safe: • Arrive early, allowing more time for security checks • Minimise what you carry, fewer bag searches will speed up entry to the ground

• Be vigilant at all times and if you see anything suspicious, tell a steward right away • If you see anything that could pose an immediate threat to safety, call 999 • In an emergency, listen to the public address instructions and follow them • If told to evacuate, do so immediately, do not wait around to film events on your mobile • Move right away from the stadium as quickly as possible for your safety and to allow clear access for any emergency vehicles • Once you are safe, follow the local police force on Twitter for updates To find out more, visit gov.uk/ACT or @TerrorismPolice

SUPPORTERS LIAISON OFFICER

DONCASTER ROVERS

SUPPORTERS LIAISON OFFICER

35 Good afternoon ladies and gentleman, welcome to the Keepmoat Stadium and a very warm welcome to all the visiting fans from Portsmouth. I wanted to take this opportunity to remind you of all of the work that the supporter liaison officers do. The aim of the SLO role is to provide information and guidance to supporters, while also providing a communication link between the supporters and the club management and the club management back to the supporters. I use many different communication links to talk to supporters such as twitter (@SLO_DRFC), Facebook (DRFCSLO), email (dean.medcalf@clubdoncaster.co.uk) and also face to face. So if you see me walking around the stadium at any point please come and have a chat.

through the concourses so again if there is anyways I can help do not hesitate to ask. If you don’t see me then I am contactable by the stewards on the radios you can contact me on Facebook or Twitter and I will come and find you. After the game, I will first be outside the away end to again help and talk to any away supporters as they leave the ground and head back to their transport and make sure that they enjoyed their visit to the Keepmoat Stadium. Following this, you will find me located in the Belle Vue Bar to gather any feedback from fans relating to any issues. Following the game I work with the away fans on social media gathering feedback from their visit to the Keepmoat Stadium, this is something that not many clubs do and it allows me to pass information back to the club to see how we can help improve the matchday experience for everyone.

The SLO role is also here to help the visiting supporters who come to the Keepmoat Stadium. When the away supporter coaches arrive I will be waiting to greet them and to help direct our visitors or help in any way I can.

So I hope you find this brief description of what a typical match day is for an SLO and what we are trying to achieve on match days. As always you can contact me on social media or via email, all of my details are above.

During home games, I will spend the first half located in the South Stand and the second half in the West Stand. At half time you will find me making my way

SUPPORTERS CLUB

SUPPORTERS CLUB A big warm welcome to all the supporters for today’s game, especially we would like to welcome to all the Portsmouth supporters who have made the long trip to the Keepmoat Stadium. A big welcome back to John Marquis, who did so much for the club with his goals, and it was good to see him at our home game a couple of weeks ago. Let’s hope we can match the result our Under 23’s got against Pompey in the Premier League Cup a week last Tuesday A big Happy 140th Birthday to Rovers, from humble beginnings to what a fantastic club we have today. It will be great to see a number of former players back at the game today. The next away game is away at Rotherham in the Leasing. Com Trophy Tuesday October 8. Departure times are Retford 4.45pm, Harworth 4.50pm Bawtry / Rossington Styrupp 5pm, Punches 5.05pm, Infirmary 5.15pm and Keepmoat Stadium Car Park 2, 5.30pm. Costs are £11 adult members, £10 oaps and under 18s, please add £2 for no-members. Followed by Oxford United on Saturday October 12 which leave Retford 9.am, Harworth 9.05am, Bawtry & Rossington 9.15am, Punches 9.20am, Infirmary 9.30am, Waterdale 9.30am and the Keepmoat Stadium at 9.45am. Again this season we will be running coaches to all home and away games, the sheet with times and prices on are included in the programme but are subject to change. We have tried to keep the prices as low as we can but had to introduce a travel policy for under 16s who have to have a responsible adult travel with them. Fans who are 16-17-years-old need a consent form from their parents or guardians to travel. These can be downloaded from the Supporters

Club website, on the bus or at the Supporters Club office based in the Club Doncaster Academy. As always we will run the home match bus from Retford, Harworth and Rossington Styrupp and Labour club, times are 1pm (6pm) 1.20pm (6.20pm) and 1.30pm (6.30pm). Times in brackets are night games, and there is no need to book. For fans’ safety we will be picking up on the inner circle adjacent to Car Park 2 this season, so you can leave your car there. You can join the Supporters Club on the bus and get discount straight away, or join online or at Supporters shop located in the Club Doncaster Academy. The price is £7 adult and £5 concessions. Call Paul on 07961727769 or Len on 01302 817347 for more details and bookings. As in previous years the Supporters Club are having weekend trips away, the North Branch will be stopping in Blackpool for the Accrington game, and the Retford Branch will also be stopping in Blackpool for the last game of the season at Bloomfield Road. Call Paul on 07961727769 if interested. Both trips will be £150, Inc. two nights bed, breakfast and evening meal. Not many places left. To finish on a sad note, we would like to pass on our condolences to the family of Jack Tempest, a lifelong fan who travelled with North Branch and used to travel with his Grandson Tom Gregory. Also to the family of Roger Hough, former chairman and treasurer of the Retford Branch. Our thoughts are with both families. Enjoy the game, and get behind the team. Rovers Till We Die Paul Mayfield

VIKING SUPPORTERS COOPERATIVE Football is the national game, and football supporters are the lifeblood of the game. While many privately owned football clubs are well run, ours included, there are numerous examples over the years where this model of ownership has failed the supporters of that club, and has led to a number of clubs becoming either partly or fully owned by those supporters. The Minister Of Sport set up the Expert Working Group with the intention of looking at ways to improve engagement and dialogue between clubs and fans, and therefore to improve transparency and trust. The detailed recommendations from the EWG led to the government instructing the EFL and the Premier League to enter into structured dialogue with those supporters, and especially with the supporters trust at that club. As you may be aware the club hold two Meet The Owners events each year which meet the criteria set down by the EFL. On top of that the club have a Supporters Board which meets on a regular basis during the season to discuss a very broad range of topics. Suffice to say that DRFC have not only met the requirements but have exceeded them in both frequency and content, and that is something we can once again be proud of. Martin O'Hara

40 Rossington All Saints Academy will not be taking part in the EFL Girls Cup in 2019/20, meaning a new school will represent Doncaster Rovers in the area final in January. The six-a-side tournament, which will take place at the Club Doncaster Sports Park on Thursday October 24, is made up of secondary school teams from across the Doncaster region. Rossington reigned supreme last year, making it to the area finals in Nottingham, where they faced teams from all over the UK. Before the area finals, all the teams in Doncaster compete in a mini league, facing each team once, with the winner of the league advancing through to the area final. The girls, which are made up of year seven and eight students from their respective schools, are given the chance to show off their footballing skills in front of

Foundation coaches and fellow schools. Rossington won all but one of their games on their way to finishing top of the league last year, with only an entertaining draw against Selby High School stopping them from gaining maximum points. A plus 40-goal difference and two goals conceded throughout the tournament was an exceptional achievement, making Rossington deserved winners on the night. But with the sporting school opting not to take part, there is a chance for a new school to try and achieve Wembley glory. Foundation community coordinator for women and girls Heather King said: “Last year was a very high standard of football from all teams that took part. The girls all played so well, we are all looking forward to once again hosting the event. “With the winning team able to wear the Doncaster Rovers kit in

the next round, plenty of teams are excited to take part. Last year, Rossington won the tournament for the first time, hopefully a school will be able to say the same again this year.” The winner of the area final will then move on to the regional final, with the winner advancing through to the grand final held at Wembley Stadium in March 2020. A six-a-side contest, the road to the finals began when the new school term started back in September. Each of the 72 EFL clubs organised a local competition for all schools wishing to take part in their area. More than 6,000 girls are involved in the competition each year, as the EFL Trust look to continue to build on the growing support of the women’s game. For more information, or to sign your team up to the event, please email Kelly at kelly.jackson-powell@ clubdoncasterfoundation.co.uk.

DATE Two football teams made up of Fit Rovers veterans received mixed fortunes as they faced a tough opposition in Barnsley FC’s Fit Reds at Oakwell Stadium. Fit Reds, the men’s health project at Barnsley FC’s Reds in the Community, claimed victory in the nine-a-side contest, while also coming from two goals down to salvage a draw in the 11-a-side game. After the match, players from both sides got together for a bite to eat and a drink, strengthening the relationship between Fit Rovers and Fit Reds. The matches were entertaining throughout, especially the 11-a-side matchup, which ended in thrilling fashion, Fit Rovers holding out for a 3-3 draw. After seeing both a 2-0 and 3-1 lead slip, the men from the award-winning men’s health project in Doncaster survived a late Fit Reds onslaught to gain a muchdeserved draw. Adam Hogg scored the opening goal of the game for Fit Rovers in the second half, before Dave McDonald doubled Rovers’ lead with an excellent finish in the bottom corner. After conceding a soft goal, Fit Rovers found another gear, as Dave Wells-Burr used his pace to run clear and execute a fine finish to restore Rovers’ two goal cushion. As fatigue began to set in, Fit Reds restored parity, scoring twice in ten minutes to level the scores, before a

frantic finish saw Gareth Dawson almost score from the halfway line for Fit Rovers. The 9-a-side game, which was tailored for those who are used to a slower, steadier game pace, saw Fit Rovers beaten by their Barnsley counterparts. The result, however, is not the sole focus of these games. Fit Rovers prides itself on its inclusivity, giving those who would never take part the chance to don the Doncaster Rovers badge and represent Fit Rovers. Mark Johnson, a veteran from the first ever Fit Rovers course, would never have played football if not for the opportunities presented by the health and wellbeing team. Health and wellbeing manager at Club Doncaster Foundation Nick Gillott said: “There were mixed fortunes for both squads at Oakwell, but we are extremely proud of every single player that put a Rovers kit on. “The ethos of the project has and always will be inclusivity, not ability, when it comes to playing football. The result is not important, all we want to see is vets playing football with a smile on their faces. “To other clubs, the win is the most important thing, but here at Fit Rovers we will continue to stick to our principles as long as the project is running." There are still places available on the final Fit Rovers course for 2019, which begins on October 10. Interested? Get in touch with the health and wellbeing team on 01302 764663, or alternatively at fitrovers@ clubdoncasterfoundation.co.uk.
