THE MANAGER

THE MANAGER

DARREN MOORE Good afternoon and welcome back to the Keepmoat Stadium. I would like to welcome Graham Coughlan, as well as the supporters, players and staff of Bristol Rovers who have travelled up to the game.

05

We were disappointed with the performance and result at the Kassam Stadium last Saturday. Although Oxford scored at crucial times to change the game, awe cannot have any complaints about the final result. We’ve had a good week in training, though, and please get behind the lads today as they look to get a result. Thank you to each and every one of the 491 fans who travelled to Oxford, your support both here and on the road is crucial. The lads, staff and myself really appreciate the backing you have given us throughout my time here. I am pleased to be a patron of Show Racism The Red Card, the UK’s largest anti-racism educational charity. Yesterday they invited

people around the country to wear red as part of their national day of action which encourages schools, businesses their individuals to wear red and make a small donation to help facilitate the delivery of antiracism education for young people & adults throughout England, Scotland and Wales. Many of my colleagues from across Club Doncaster took part in the campaign yesterday, and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank them for their support. Every penny raised from the day enables the campaign to work with more young people and adults across the UK to challenge racism in society. The shameful events in Bulgaria in the week show how much still needs to be done to educate people, and we should not be fooled into thinking

there is not still work to do in this country. On Monday evening we saw a top-level footballer make his England debut, we saw a strong and incredibly mature performance from him against a hostile environment. We saw an England team put on a polished display and bounced back in style from a defeat in their previous game, yet during the week all anyone was talking about was the actions of a small number of so-called supporters. That cannot be right. Enjoy the game.

THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE

CHIEF EXECUTIVE

GAVIN BALDWIN Good afternoon and welcome back to the Keepmoat Stadium. I’d like to welcome the supporters, players and staff of Bristol Rovers who have travelled up to the Keepmoat Stadium today. I’m sure the near 500 of you who travelled to Oxford last Saturday were disappointed with the performance and result, but the fact we have got to mid October before we can really say a display fell short of the standards we expect says a lot about how well the current team have gelled under the guidance of Darren Moore.

There is plenty going on behind the scenes at Club Doncaster

07

There is plenty going on behind the scenes at Club Doncaster, with a number of improvements designed to further diversify our income streams and secure a long-term future for elite sport in the town. Earlier this week we announced the acquisition of Purple Vouchers, which offers discounts at a range of local businesses. This a great example where we can take an established business and add value to develop it, plus offer additional products to supporters. Purple Vouchers and the DNA Card are now established products and the money they bring in will be worth more than £250,000 a year into the playing budgets of our teams, while adding value to some of our own products such as season tickets. We are excited to see how we can develop both the DNA Card and the Purple Vouchers book. A Purple Vouchers book will be added to season tickets from next

season, along with the DNA Card, while those of you who also get a season ticket for the Dons will get one earlier (don’t forget Dons season tickets go on sale from 9am on Monday from our Box Office!). We also have an introductory offer where if you buy a match ticket prior to November 2 you are entitled to a fiver off a Purple Vouchers book they normally retail at £20. We also confirmed the appointment of Martin Rowlands as Rugby League World Cup legacy officer, a role working with us here at the

Keepmoat Stadium which has been funded by a grant from Doncaster Council. I'd like to thank them for their support as we look to create a legacy from getting three World Cup games here at Club Doncaster Sports Park - it is in all our interests to ensure the games held here are a real success and that we have a lasting impact from them. Enjoy the game.

FEATURE:

BEN SHEAF Moving a fair distance away from home is not something that came into Ben Sheaf’s thoughts when deciding to join Rovers on loan from Premier League giants Arsenal in the summer. The 21-year-old’s only previous experience in the EFL was with Stevenage, and he felt he was ready to test himself in Sky Bet League One when Rovers came calling.

“It’s a different environment and something I felt I needed, and with the way the football club is run it made it feel like the right move for me.

He was comfortable moving north for the first time, admitting that his career was at the forefront of his mind when agreeing to join Darren Moore’s side.

“If it hadn’t been for injuries I think I would have made the move a lot sooner, I felt I was better than under23s football a couple of years ago.”

“As long as it’s the right move for me in terms of my career then the location doesn’t bother me and that’s why I had no hesitation in coming here,” he says. “I wasn’t worried about moving up north or anything like that, it’s been really easy and nice to get used to a new area. “Whether it’s north or south, or even abroad if I feel it can benefit me as a person and as a player then I’ll look to do it.

After gaining valuable experience playing in the Europa League for Arsenal, Sheaf was left with the hunger for more. Lengthy injuries halted his progress at the Emirates Stadium, but once back fit he was keen to get out and test himself in the EFL in a side where he could showcase his talents. “I got some good experience playing in the Europa League with Arsenal which obviously at the time was a really proud moment for myself and my family,” says Sheaf.

09

F E AT U R E I N T E R V I E W

“What it did do though is give me a taste of what it’s like to play at that level, and that drives me on to try and reach it again.

10

“It’s like that for any young player, playing away in Serbia with the hostile fans was a really good life experience. Anyone who has been involved in a game like that will benefit in the long run even if at the time it does test your mental resolve. “I remember running out onto the pitch and it being pretty crazy, and that is something that will help me throughout my career. “Even after that though I still get nervous before games, I remember my first one for Rovers and I just wanted to make a good impression. “The more experienced you become the easier you find playing in front of big crowds, every game of football is different and you have to be able to handle that.” Sheaf has only missed one of Rovers’ 11 league games so far this season, and has been impressed with the standard of football in the third tier. He feels the league suits him as a player, with Rovers in particular keen to get the ball down and play on the deck. “It’s been a really good start for myself, I’m playing games and the manager has integrated me into the team really well,” he says.

SHEAF

F E AT U R E I N T E R V I E W

“The way he wants to play is good to be a part of and on top of that we’ve got a great bunch of lads off the field as well. “I had a spell in League Two a couple of years ago and there is definitely a step up in terms of the standard of football on show. “We like to get the ball down and play which is good because a few teams at this level and below tend to try and go from back to front quite quickly. “It suits my style down to the ground and it’s a good challenge for me, I feel like I’m coping with it well though. “When I was at Stevenage the ball would miss the midfield out quite a lot which made it a percentage game in the areas I was involved in. Coming here I knew that the structure was a good one and there is a clear identity on how the team play. “To be a part of that helps me showcase my talent and skills much better than I’ve been able to before.” Rovers have a good mix of youth and experience within the squad, Sheaf feels he is learning a lot from different players. His partnership with captain Ben Whiteman continues to flourish in the middle of the park, with Sheaf keen to gain as much knowledge as he can from the Rovers skipper. “Having a lot of lads here at a similar age to me made it really easy to settle in as we are quite similar personalities,” he adds. “We’ve also got a few senior boys who can help to explain to us what the league is about and different things about the club.

“Playing alongside Ben has helped me already, there isn’t much between us in terms of age but he’s very experienced at this level. “We’re similar types of players and I feel we complement each other massively in games, and as each game goes by we’re getting better. “That has shown with the way we play out from the back and get the team moving, we dominate the ball so it’s key for us to be involved as much as we can. “It’s a very fluent system and I’ve played in a three at the back so I tend to drop in when the full-backs move forward. “Teams are going to come to try and stop us from playing so it’s important that we adapt and find ways to break them down.”

BRISTOL ROVERS:

FOUR TO WATCH ANSSI

JAAKKOLA The 6ft 5in Finland international was a key target for Graham Coughlan this summer after he left Championship side Reading at the end of his contract. He has lived in England for three-years now after his playing career has taken him to places such as South Africa, Czech Republic and Scotland.

OLLIE

CLARKE The 27-year-old is a prime example of what Bristol Rovers’ Academy can produce as he has worked his way up through all age groups at the club before signing a professional contract in 2008. Since signing he spent the following three seasons on loan at non-league clubs gaining valuable experience and upon his return from his last loan at Clevedon Town he became a firstteam regular. He made his debut in May 2011 when he came on as an 88th minute substitute against Colchester, replacing Harry Pell. His long service and commitment to the club has paid off with him being named the club’s captain.

TONY

CRAIG An accomplished centreback with vast experience under his belt at the age of the 34. He is a versatile defender who can play either centre halve or cover at left back. To date his career has seen him only play for clubs in the south of England - featuring for Millwall, Wycombe, Crystal Palace, Leyton Orient and Brentford through his career which started in 2003 after he graduated from the Lions’ Academy.

TYLER

SMITH A familiar face at the Keepmoat Stadium, having spent the second half of last season on loan at Rovers from Sheffield United having impressed in the National League with Barrow in the opening exchanges of the campaign. The bubbly forward was a popular figure around the club, hitting two goals against Burton Albion on his debut. He moved to the Gas this summer, again on loan from the Blades, and has four goals to his name.

15

IN OPPOSITION

STEVE FOSTER DEFENDER Came though the ranks at Mansfield, but after only one season at Field Mill he moved on to Telford. After four-years in nonleague he returned to the Football League with Bristol Rovers in 1997. He played 197 times for the Pirates – the most appearances he made for any club in his 22-year long career. After leaving Bristol he signed for Doncaster in 2002 helping the club reach their first conference play-off final which won them promotion to the Football League in May 2003 after beating Dagenham & Redbridge 3-2. KYLE BENNETT MIDFIELDER Joined Doncaster in 2011 after a complex move from Bury. He scored his first goal for the club on the night that he made his first start during a 3-0 League Cup victory over Tranmere.

16

His first season at the club ended in disappointment after Rovers were relegated from the Championship after four consecutive years in that division. After four years in South Yorkshire Bennett left the club to join Portsmouth in League Two. From there he would join Bristol Rovers in 2018. He remains contracted to the club although is currently out on a season-long-loan at Sky Bet League Two side Swindon Town – managed by former Rovers midfielder Richie Wellens. CHRIS BEARDSLEY FORWARD The striker came into the club fresh off promotion from League Two. In December 2004 – six months after joining the club – he left after not scoring in his single four games he played. He joined Preston in 2012 and was loaned out to Bristol Rovers for the 2013/14 season with former manager John Ward handing him 24 appearances for the club. Currently he is contracted to Burton Albion as a joint player and fitness coach under Nigel Clough.

SHARED 5-A-SIDE PAUL HEFFERNAN FORWARD Heffernan’s five-year spell in Doncaster is always looked back on with great fondness. After playing against Manchester City, Aston Villa and Arsenal in Rovers’ memorable League Cup run, he was then part of the squad that beat Bristol Rovers in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final at the Millennium Stadium. Towards the end of his time in South Yorkshire he was loaned to Bristol Rovers in 2010 until he end of the season where he scored four goals in 11 games. Upon his release by the club he was linked with a permanent move to Bristol Rovers but opted to remain in Yorkshire with Sheffield Wednesday. TYLER SMITH FORWARD An Academy product of Sheffield United, he had enjoyed a loan spell in non-league with Barrow where he scored 10 times for Ian Evatt’s side. The goal return caught the eye of former Rovers manager Grant McCann who signed him on loan for the remainder of the 2018/19 season. He scored on his debut, bagging a brace against Burton. During Doncaster’s surge into the play-offs he featured 14 times. He is spending this season on loan at the Gas.

IN OPPOSITION

PAST RECORD PAST PASTRECORD RECORD

There can be little doubt that the highest profile meeting between these two sides came at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff on April 1 2017 when Rovers famously lifted the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy. Rovers started the game brightly, scoring in the first minute through Jonathan Forte then doubling their lead via Paul Heffernan four minutes later.

The first of those four meetings was a 1-0 victory at the Memorial Ground in December 2017, when a Niall Mason penalty sealed the points.

That was enough for a 2-0 lead at the interval but Richard Walker’s penalty four minutes after the restart gave the Gas a way back into the final.

The reverse fixture at the Keepmoat Stadium went the way of the visiting team, despite John Marquis scoring after four minutes. The Pirates went on to take the points via Ryan Sweeney, Rory Gaffney and Ellis Harrison (now a team-mate of Marquis at Portsmouth).

Sammy Igoe levelled just after the hour mark, with the tie eventually going to extra-time. And it was fitting that Graeme Lee headed home the winning goal in that period, meaning he was the one to lead Rovers onto the onpitch podium to lift the silverware. League meetings between the two sides have been infrequent in the years since, with only six coming in the past 12 years. Rovers, the Doncaster variety, have had the edge in recent meetings with victory in three of the four clashes in the past two seasons.

Last season was definitely one for Doncaster Rovers to celebrate - with a 4-0 win in the south-west followed by 4-1 victory back at the Keepmoat Stadium. And there were some memorable strikes in each game - Marquis sticking one into a top corner from distance at the Memorial Ground and Kieran Sadlier also scoring from long-range in the return fixture.

ROVERS MANAGERS

IN THE HOT SEAT:

DONCASTER ROVERS MANAGERS FROM 1920

GEORGE RAYNOR (1967-1968) Following the sudden departure of Bill Leivers in February 1964, Rovers handed the managerial reins to former manager Jackie Bestall and trainer Frank Marshall. This interim arrangement proved successful and the duo led Leivers’ team to the Fourth Division title, the club’s first promotion since 1950. If the decision to keep Bestall and Marshall in post was justified by events, the decision not to appoint a permanent manager in the summer of 1966 was most surprising. The board merely restructured the existing management team with Bestall designated as “Acting Team Manager,” Marshall named as coach and with Secretary Tom Garnett taking a role in playing matters. However, events conspired to mar the prospects of this unusual arrangement. In early September 1966 captain John Nicholson was killed in a car crash which also left his passenger, Alick Jeffrey, badly injured. Then, much to the disgust of supporters, the Rovers board sold topscorer Laurie Sheffield to Norwich City and winger Tony Coleman to Manchester City. In December 1966 the board appointed Keith Kettleborough as player-manager, paying Newcastle United £12,000 to secure his services. This proved to be a disastrous choice, and Rovers plummeted to the foot of Division Three, conceding a record 117 goals. At the end of the season, Kettleborough was sacked and he was eventually transferred to Chesterfield at a considerable loss. In June 1967 Rovers appointed 60-yearold George Raynor as manager. Born at Hoyland near Barnsley, Raynor had a modest playing career before World War Two but after the war he became involved in coaching. In 1946 he secured a job with the Swedish FA and two years later he coached the Swedish Olympic side to the gold medal at the London Olympics.

After spells in Italy and England he was appointed Sweden’s National Coach and took them to the World Cup Final on home soil in 1958 where they lost to Brazil. Raynor had many of the previous season’s squad at his disposal but results were initially poor, with only three points coming from the opening five games. Raynor decided to make changes and signed goalkeeper Gordon Morritt and defender Graham Shaw. Results began to improve, although Rovers never achieved the consistency needed to trouble the leaders in Division Four. The best run came in February and March 1968 when Rovers won seven games out of nine. Raynor did some shrewd business in February 1968 when he sold youngsters Dennis Leigh and Graham Watson to Rotherham United in exchange for fullbacks Harold Wilcockson and Colin Clish, and midfielder Chris Rabjohn. These three players were to be key members of the 1968-69 Division Four Championship side. 1968-69 began promisingly and after ten games Rovers were in second place on the back of five successive wins. Sadly, things went downhill from there. With Wilcockson injured, Rovers began to leak goals and in November 1968 with Rovers having picked up one point from four games, Raynor offered his resignation. It was all quite amicable, with Raynor offering to remain in post until a successor was found and then taking charge of the youth team. Unfortunately, Raynor was taken ill and the faithful Jackie Bestall had to step in until the new appointment was made. George Raynor, the veteran coach, had done a good job of turning around a dispirited club and he had laid the foundations for future success. Now Rovers needed someone who could finish the task Raynor had begun. John Coyle

Paul Stancliffe praised the shift his players put in to nullify Huddersfield Town’s strengths which enabled them to pull off a 4-0 win. Junior Smith’s hat-trick – coupled with Will McGowan’s strike – fired Rovers to back-to-back victories in the EFL Youth Alliance Division. Stancliffe said: “With all due respect to Huddersfield I I look back at the game and wonder how we didn’t get two or three more, but I can’t get too picky because it is a win. “They are a good team and we expected them to start the second-half well like they did. They are only a good team, however, if you allow them to play. In the first-half we won the ball back in good areas which meant we could apply pressure quicker. “In the second-half they had a little bit more possession, but due to our shape we kept well

together and Ben Bottomley did well in goal when he was called upon.” Captain Ben Blythe was withdrawn out of the team due to illness, while Lirak Hasani missed another game due to further complications with his injury. He added: “Ben Blythe is ill which is why he missed the game. He wasn’t well on Friday and was sent home and he text me saying he was not feeling better, so he ruled himself out. If Ben says he is not fit then he can’t play, he is a player you can trust in that way. “Lirak was in to see the specialist in the week to have a scan for his injury and we will take it from there.”

Hello everyone! Welcome to today’s game. Thank you to Lauren from the Foundation for giving me some lessons on mental health awareness along with my friends Parky The Lion, Erik The Viking and, of course, Alfie May - you can see what we learnt in DDTV on our YouTube channel and website.. I have been sleeping well, eating healthy and spending time with my friends. Remember kids to always speak with family or friends if you too are feeling stressed or unhappy. Sharing match days with you all makes me happy as I always look forward to seeing you all again.

Enjoy the game, Donny Dog

DONCASTER BELLES

Belles head coach Zoey Shaw is relishing time on the training pitch as the club enjoy a mini break in fixtures. The Belles currently don’t have a scheduled game until November 10’s game at home to Bedworth United in the FAWNL Division One Midlands, and Shaw is hopeful this midseason mini-break is a good opportunity to work hard on the basics before kicking on. “We’re on a bad run at the minute and we need to get out of this losing run that we’ve had of late, we can’t afford to take any teams for granted because there are going to be so many more difficult tests coming up,” she said. “We need to regroup and get going again quickly, we have a little bit of time to work hard in training because we now have so long between our next league game, and we want the girls to make sure they kick on after this break. “We have to get back to basics and go again, we need to

figure out some new ways of playing to try and improve the way we work both on and off the ball, once we work that out, I’m sure that we can push on.” The Belles were knocked out of the FAWNL Plate at the first round after a defeat at Bolton which came a week after bowing out of the FA Women’s Cup at the hands of Chesterle-street. “This level of football is so unpredictable and you cannot underestimate anyone, we knew going into the game that Bolton would provide us with a physical battle, and they really moved the ball around well and made it difficult for us,” Shaw added. “I can’t make any excuses, we just haven’t played to our potential recently and we need to make sure we get things right quickly.”

"We have to get back to basics and go again, we need to figure out some new ways of playing to try and improve the way we work both on and off the ball"

Good afternoon all and welcome back to the Keepmoat Stadium.

Like us, Graham Coughlan’s side are lingering around the play-off spots but a home advantage and games in hand could prove vital.

Our last run out on home turf was quite frustrating to say the least as a last minute header earned Portsmouth a scarcely deserved win after 90 minutes of Rovers dominating play. It’s a fantastic opportunity to put things right, today, though as we welcome inform Bristol Rovers.

We are delighted to welcome today’s match sponsors, AE Spink. Spinks are a family company, supplying building, plumbing, heating, bathrooms and kitchens to trade and retail customers and have been working with Club Doncaster as an Official Partner since the launch of the partnership model. They have a

fantastic reputation in the industry and are known for extensive stock and excellent customer service. We hope everyone with AE Spink have a fantastic time with us here in hospitality. If you would like to find more information about match day sponsorships, enjoying VIP hospitality with us or Official Partnerships, contact the commercial team on 01302 764665 / commercial@clubdoncaster.co.uk.

SAFETY Three points is not the only priority today. Making sure everyone goes home safe is the most important result. Over recent months we have been working closely with the police and the EFL to review security at the Keepmoat Stadium. Now we are asking you to do your bit. It is vital that everyone - players, staff and supporters - remains vigilant and reports any concerns to stewards or police. Attacks might be rare, and the chance of you being caught up in one unlikely, but the message is ACT #ActionCountersTerrorism. Rovers safety officer Sam Ramsden said:

"We want everyone to enjoy today’s game at the Keepmoat Stadium but if you see anything that causes you concern, tell a steward or staff member. Please do not worry that you might be wasting our time. "The stewards are here to help keep us all safe so please be patient and cooperate with their instructions. When it comes to security it has to be a team effort and we are all players." Here's a quick reminder of what you can do to help keep yourself and others safe: • Arrive early, allowing more time for security checks • Minimise what you carry, fewer bag searches will speed up entry to the ground

• Be vigilant at all times and if you see anything suspicious, tell a steward right away • If you see anything that could pose an immediate threat to safety, call 999 • In an emergency, listen to the public address instructions and follow them • If told to evacuate, do so immediately, do not wait around to film events on your mobile • Move right away from the stadium as quickly as possible for your safety and to allow clear access for any emergency vehicles • Once you are safe, follow the local police force on Twitter for updates To find out more, visit gov.uk/ACT or @TerrorismPolice

DONCASTER ROVERS

SUPPORTERS LIAISON OFFICER

35 Good afternoon ladies and gentleman, welcome to the Keepmoat Stadium and a very warm welcome to all the visiting fans from Bristol Rovers. I wanted to take this opportunity to remind you of all of the work that the supporter liaison officers do. The aim of the SLO role is to provide information and guidance to supporters, while also providing a communication link between the supporters and the club management and the club management back to the supporters. I use many different communication links to talk to supporters such as twitter (@SLO_DRFC), Facebook (DRFCSLO), email (dean.medcalf@clubdoncaster.co.uk) and also face to face. So if you see me walking around the stadium at any point please come and have a chat.

through the concourses so again if there is anyways I can help do not hesitate to ask. If you don’t see me then I am contactable by the stewards on the radios you can contact me on Facebook or Twitter and I will come and find you. After the game, I will first be outside the away end to again help and talk to any away supporters as they leave the ground and head back to their transport and make sure that they enjoyed their visit to the Keepmoat Stadium. Following this, you will find me located in the Belle Vue Bar to gather any feedback from fans relating to any issues. Following the game I work with the away fans on social media gathering feedback from their visit to the Keepmoat Stadium, this is something that not many clubs do and it allows me to pass information back to the club to see how we can help improve the matchday experience for everyone.

The SLO role is also here to help the visiting supporters who come to the Keepmoat Stadium. When the away supporter coaches arrive I will be waiting to greet them and to help direct our visitors or help in any way I can.

So I hope you find this brief description of what a typical match day is for an SLO and what we are trying to achieve on match days. As always you can contact me on social media or via email, all of my details are above.

During home games, I will spend the first half located in the South Stand and the second half in the West Stand. At half time you will find me making my way

SUPPORTERS CLUB

SUPPORTERS CLUB A big warm welcome to all the supporters for today’s game, especially we would like to welcome to all the Bristol Rovers supporters who have made the long trip to the Keepmoat Stadium. We have had a good set of results both home and away with the Gas, and forged a good bond with their fans after the Johnstone Paint Trophy final in Cardiff back in 2007. Again this season we will be running coaches to all home and away games, the sheet with times and prices on are included in the programme but are subject to change. We have tried to keep the prices as low as we can but had to introduce a travel policy for under 16s who have to have a responsible adult travel with them. Fans who are 16-17-years-old need a consent form from their parents or guardians to travel. These can be downloaded from the Supporters Club website, on the bus or at the Supporters Club office based in the Club Doncaster Academy. As always we will run the home match bus from Retford, Harworth and Rossington Styrupp and Labour club, times are 1pm (6pm) 1.20pm (6.20pm) and 1.30pm (6.30pm). Times in brackets are night games, and there is no need to book. For fans’ safety we will be picking up on the inner circle adjacent to Car Park 2 this season, so you can leave your car there. You can join the Supporters Club on the bus and get discount straight away, or join

online or at Supporters shop located in the Club Doncaster Academy. The price is £7 adult and £5 concessions. Call Paul on 07961727769 or Len on 01302 817347 for more details and bookings. The North Branch also run coaches to most away games, from The Adwick, Carcroft, A19 corridor area. If you wish to travel with them call 07780316923. They are a great set of lads and lasses, and do a lot of raffles to support local charities. As in previous years the Supporters Club are having weekend trips away, the North Branch will be stopping in Blackpool for the Accrington game, and the Retford Branch will also be stopping in Blackpool for the last game of the season at Bloomfield Road. Call Paul on 07961727769 if interested. Both trips will be £150, Inc. two nights bed, breakfast and evening meal. Not many places left. Christmas draw tickets will be on sale very soon, if anybody wants to help sell them for us get in touch with Paul, also if you have any donations of prizes they would be most welcome. Condolences go the family of John Ward, who was a regular on the Retford Supporters coach, who passed away last week, John travelled with nephew Lewis to most away games, and our thoughts go out to all the family. Enjoy the game. And get behind the team! Rovers Till We Die Paul Mayfield

VIKING SUPPORTERS CO-OPERATIVE Football is the national game, and football supporters are the lifeblood of the game. While many privately owned football clubs are well run, ours included, there are numerous examples over the years where this model of ownership has failed the supporters of that club, and has led to a number of clubs becoming either partly or fully owned by those supporters. The Minister Of Sport set up the Expert Working Group with the intention of looking at ways to improve engagement and dialogue between clubs and fans, and therefore to improve transparency and trust. The detailed recommendations from the EWG led to the government instructing the EFL and the Premier League to enter into structured dialogue with those supporters, and especially with the supporters trust at that club. As you may be aware the club hold two Meet The Owners events each year which meet the criteria set down by the EFL. On top of that the club have a Supporters Board which meets on a regular basis during the season to discuss a very broad range of topics. Suffice to say that DRFC have not only met the requirements but have exceeded them in both frequency and content, and that is something we can once again be proud of. Martin O'Hara

The Club Doncaster Sports College academic year is in full swing, with learners enjoying education and sporting opportunities in both further and higher education. This year has seen Club Doncaster Sports College and Doncaster College and University Centre formally enter into collaboration, creating the ultimate learning environment for students looking for a career in sport. The partnership enables students from Doncaster to study qualifications in sport across both the Doncaster College Hub Campus and the Keepmoat Stadium at Club Doncaster Sports Park. Students have the opportunity to study BTECs and degrees in high-quality educational and professional

sporting facilities as well being able to have full access to the support services provided by both Colleges. Club Doncaster Sports College has just celebrated its 10-year anniversary and the relationship with Doncaster College and University Centre launches the next chapter for one of the EFL’s leading educational providers. Kathryn Brentnall, acting principal Doncaster College, said: “Together we are able to enhance our existing offers of high-quality learning opportunities for students wishing to pursue a career in sport all the way through from level two to full honours degrees. “There are real synergies between our respective values and ambitions for education in

Doncaster and this cements a relationship that also aligns with the borough objectives of anchor institutions working in partnership. Adi Turnpenny, Club Doncaster Sports College principal, said: “It’s been a great start to the academic year, to have two leading education providers in Doncaster working together is really exciting. "By combining the strengths of both colleges, it will be of great benefit to existing and prospective sports students throughout the region." Applications for 2020/21 courses are now open. More than 500 young people from across the Doncaster borough celebrated their NCS graduation at the annual Club Doncaster Foundation event. An evening filled with awards, laughter, music and memories recognised a fantastic summer of success for NCS participants. Since the beginning of July these young people have spent three weeks taking part in physically and mentally enduring challenges, along with volunteering up to 30 hours of their time to make a difference in their local community. They were joined in their celebrations at the Dome by Rovers player Cameron John, who was on hand to present the special recognition awards on the evening. The Wolverhampton Wolves loanee also stuck around to mingle with the young people, posing for photos and talking to the participants about their NCS journeys, something which he feels was truly inspiring. He said: “After speaking to a few of the young people, I can see how much of a lasting impact NCS has had on them. “Learning about all the community

work and how they’ve given back to Doncaster is fantastic, I can’t do anything but endorse it.” Plenty of special guests were invited to share in the success of the young people, including representatives from the Foundation’s project partner Frenchgate, alongside members of the EFL Trust, YHA, Expect Youth and Teenage Cancer Trust, the latter winning an award on the evening. Head of Impact Doncaster Jan Budtz said: “This has been one of our most successful NCS summers to date, so I am extremely proud of all my staff and participants for making it one to remember. “It was great to see so many people not just take part in the programme but have a strong commitment to social action.

"To have 606 young people deliver more than 15,000 hours of community work and raise £16,728 in the process for local charities, is an absolute credit to all those who have taken part this summer.” The NCS summer programme allows young people to escape their comfort zones, embarking on an adrenaline-filled adventure in a variety of adventure locations. They try their hand at activities such as rock climbing, kayaking, hiking and archery. They then spend a week learning new skills and enhancing their CVs, taking part in a wide range of workshops, before volunteering in a range of social action projects to impact on the community of Doncaster. 606 participants contributed to 43 social action projects, delivering 15,630 hours of community action and raising £16,728 for charities across the borough. NCS is open to all 15-17-year-olds in the region and Club Doncaster Foundation will begin recruiting in November for the next adventure, taking place in summer 2020.
