"THOSE KIND OF GAMES ARE ALWAYS DIFFICULT FOR EFL CLUBS - THE NONLEAGUE SIDE PLAYERS ARE RUNNING ON ADRENALIN AND CAN FIND A BIT EXTRA THAT IS NOT NORMALLY THERE"

GRANT McCANN

WELCOME BACK TO THE KEEPMOAT STADIUM AFTER A LONG RUN OF GAMES ON THE ROAD. YOUR SUPPORT FOR US IN ALL THOSE GAMES HAS BEEN BRILLIANT AND REALLY APPRECIATED, AND HOPEFULLY NOW WE CAN PUT ON SOME PERFORMANCES TO BACK THAT UP. We have had a little break from the league with the FA Cup game at Chorley followed by the trip to Notts County in the Checkatrade Trophy. It has given us a chance to refresh and re-focus a little bit ahead of today’s game. Herbie Kane showed his class in the game at Chorley last Sunday - he has shown a fantastic attitude since joining us in the summer and helps set an example to his team-mates every day in training. His second goal caught the attention of the national media, but it the commitment we see every day that ensures he could have a really good career in the game.

Tuesday’s replay feeling that we are capable of going through. I’d like to wish a warm welcome to pupils from St John’s C of E Primary School in Worksop, who are at today’s game as the latest school where every pupil has won a ticket through our partnership with Trax FM. We had around 350 kids at the Gillingham game who had a brilliant time, and I’m sure those present today will have just as much fun with all the activities that take place in the Family Stand on every matchday. Enjoy the game.

We felt we had enough chances at Chorley to have won the game outright, but those kind of games are always difficult for EFL clubs - the non-league side players are running on adrenalin and can find a bit extra that is not normally there. So we will take the draw and go into

GAVIN BALDWIN GOOD AFTERNOON AND WELCOME BACK TO THE KEEPMOAT STADIUM. I WOULD LIKE TO WELCOME THE OWNERS, SUPPORTERS, PLAYERS AND STAFF OF AFC WIMBLEDON WHO HAVE MADE THE TRIP NORTH. We had two close games with Wimbledon last season, and I’m sure this afternoon’s encounter will be similarly contested.

Thanks to research from fan and Rovers historian John Coyle and our communications team, we know at least four Rovers players were lost in World War One.

There was great backing from the 500 or so supporters who were at Chorley last Saturday. We were frustrated to only come away with a draw given we had a shot cleared off the line, a clear penalty given as a free-kick outside the area and twice had the ball in the back of the net only for an assistant’s flag to be up.

They are Ernest Edgar Ellis, Major Booth, Frederik Waterson and Henry Birkett Shields. Everyone associated with Rovers knows we are only able to follow in their footsteps thanks to the ultimate sacrifice they and millions of others made.

It means we have another match to fit into our busy schedule, but we will go into this week’s replay with every belief we can progress - so long as we show the same determination we did in the second half last week.

Enjoy the game.

We saw Rovers fans impeccably observe moments of silence prior to the games at Charlton and Chorley.

E I B R HE E N A K HERBIE KANE’S IMMEDIATE IMPACT ON THE ROVERS SQUAD MAY BE PARTLY DOWN TO LEARNING FROM ONE OF ENGLISH FOOTBALL’S BEST EVER MIDFIELDERS. The 19-year-old has been coached by Steven Gerrard in recent years during his development at parent club Liverpool, and Kane says he learnt a lot from the former England captain. “He was our U19s Champions League coach so I worked with him quite a lot, and he was one of my heroes growing up so it was great to work with him,” he says. “Personally it helped me quite a lot with playing in a similar position to him, just his presence around the place helped all of the players. “He’s a great coach and improves players a lot, he’s been there himself and can work with people when they’re playing in different scenarios. “If I asked for advice then he’d work with me, on the training pitch he gets involved which is great to be a part of. “His work ethic and concentration is the biggest thing I learnt from, he demands the best from himself and that is key to success.”

Prior to his loan spell at the Keepmoat Stadium, Kane had never been out on loan to an EFL club before. He settled in seamlessly though, and has earnt plaudits from Rovers fans and the local media who have watched him week in, week out. “It’s been really good, I’ve played a lot of games which is the main thing for a young player to keep gaining that experience,” he says. “I didn’t expect to get in the side as soon as I did but I trust myself and I back myself to perform well once I got my chance. “The plaudits are nice but I try not to look on social media, it’s good that the fans are taking to me and I want to keep impressing. “It helps having the fans on your side and I just try and do my best every week to help the team do well. “Coming out on loan has helped me in terms of my personality in a different environment to what I’m used to which helps build my character.” The midfielder is one of a number of players out on loan from Liverpool this season, as they look to mature in the lower divisions before returning to Anfield as better players. Kane believes while being at a top club will develop players on the pitch, moving to an EFL club on loan can help to improve them off it.

10

ISSUE 11 v AFC WIMBLEDON

“It’s good seeing other players getting a similar experience to me and doing well, they’re good players so it’s natural that they do that,” he says. “It is a really professional environment, the standards are high and you have to make sure you work hard and demand the best from yourself. It’s a great club to be at and they have a history of producing good young players, so hopefully that can continue. “I was excited to come here and get some experience under my belt, I wanted to work on certain areas of my game and the lads have been good to me. “It’s a good opportunity really not just to do well for Liverpool but also to put yourself out there so other teams are aware of you. I’ve matured a lot in the short

time I’ve been here, learning from the senior players here can help me to toughen up as well. “Hopefully I can keep progressing and play as high as possible, but at the same time my mind is focused on doing well for Doncaster.” Kane scored his first two Rovers goals in the Emirates FA Cup first round tie at National League North side Chorley last weekend. He has been looking to add goals to his game for a while, and believes extra work on the training ground is starting to pay off. “I have been working on my finishing a lot after training, working on the way I strike the ball and thankfully I managed to get two in this game,” says Kane. “It didn’t matter how I scored, all that was important was to get on the score sheet and as long as it helps the team out, that is all that matters. “When I was younger I was a goal scorer, I was always trying to score and assist when I was first starting out and it was good to get back amongst the goals. “Now I’ve got my first goal that I’ve been working hard

"WHEN I WAS YOUNGER I WAS A GOAL SCORER, I WAS ALWAYS TRYING TO SCORE AND ASSIST WHEN I WAS FIRST STARTING OUT AND IT WAS GOOD TO GET BACK AMONGST THE GOALS" for I want to kick on, hopefully more will follow in the next few weeks.” After a tough run of results in Sky Bet League One, Rovers return to the Keepmoat Stadium to take on AFC Wimbledon. Grant McCann’s side are still within touching distance of the play-off places, and Kane believes they have the ability to get back to winning ways sooner rather than later. “We’ve been through a bit of a tough spell and struggled to pick up results, but overall I don’t think the performances have been too bad,” he says. “We had a good start to the season and it is important that we go back to doing the things that got us that success. "The key for us is that we need to be starting games better than how we have done in recent weeks, it all boils down to concentration and not conceding goals at key times. “When we get the first goal, we show we can go on and score one or two more, but the simple thing is we need to start better and make sure we’re ruthless in both penalty areas. “It’s been a tough month or so for us but the mentality in the group is really good and we’re still close to the play-off places and we need to make sure we keep putting the pressure on the teams above us.”

FOUR TO AFC WIMBLEDON

JOE McDONNELL TOP STOPPER

24

The Dons stopper joined from hometown club Basingstoke Town back in 2014. McDonnell came up through the youth academy at Basingstoke, making a handful of appearances for the first team, whilst also spending time out on loan at Hendon. McDonnell made his switch to the Dons in the summer of 2014, though he would have to wait until the following February before he made his debut. He had to be patient to get his chance in goal, with loan spells as Hampton & Richmond Borough and Harrow Borough in 2016, and this season has seen him start to establish himself between the sticks at Kingsmeadow.

MITCH PINNOCK MIDFIELD MAESTRO

11

The former Arsenal youth player joined from Dover Athletic over the summer. After seven years with the Gunners and a further four with Southend United, Pinnock dropped down into non-league with Bromley, Tonbridge Angels and Maidstone United, before making his first move to Dover. He joined Kingstonian during the early part of 2016, before re-joining Dover that summer, and after 12 goals in 65 league games from midfield, he signed with the Dons ahead of this season. He scored his first goal in a Wimbledon shirt last week, scoring in the 90th minute of their 1-0 win away at non-league outfit Haringey Borough in the first round of the FA Cup.

14

ISSUE 11 v AFC WIMBLEDON

O WATCH DEJI OSHILAJA DEFENSIVE ROCK

04

The powerful central defender was named as Dons captain ahead of the start of this season. Oshilaja joined the Dons permanently before the start of last season from Cardiff City, having previously spent time on loan with Wimbledon in 2015. He made just three appearances in the FA Cup and League Cup for Cardiff, instead spending most of his time away on loan in spells at Newport County, Sheffield Wednesday and Gillingham, as well as his previous switch to Kingsmeadow. He signed a two-year deal upon his return to the Dons, and after an impressive season at the back which saw him help them stay in League One, he was given the armband by his manager.

KWESI APPIAH DEADLY STRIKER

09

The Ghanaian-international forward represented his country at the 2015 African Cup of Nations. A prolific spell in non-league with Margate saw Appiah picked up by Crystal Palace in 2012, though much of his time with the Eagles was spent away from Selhurst Park on loan, particularly enjoying time spells with Cambridge United, the Dons, and Norwegian side Viking, before making a permanent move to Kingmeadow in 2017. The first goal of his permanent spell with the Dons came in the fixture between these two sides back in August last year, with Wimbledon running out as 2-0 winners over Rovers in the early part of the League One season.

THE FIRST CONNECTION BETWEEN THE DONS AND ROVERS IS A MAN WHO BECAME THE FIRST PLAYER TO PLAY FOR BOTH THE NEW WIMBLEDON AND THE FORMER OUTFIT. NEIL SULLIVAN began his career with the original Wimbledon, making over 220 appearances over 12 years for the Dons, also making his debut for Scotland during that time. Sullivan became famous during his time at the Dons for conceding a goal by David Beckham on the opening day of the 1996/97 season, with the former England captain scoring from the halfway line. Sullivan left the Dons in 2000, firstly signing for Tottenham Hotspur where he would make 64 league appearances across three years, before another move across London, this time joining Chelsea. After struggling to break into the first team at Stamford Bridge, Sullivan opted for a move north, joining Leeds United in 2004 following their relegation from the Premier League. His first season saw him win the club’s Player of the Year, and in his second season at Elland Road, he helped the Whites to the Championship play-off final, ultimately losing out to Watford at the Millennium Stadium in 2006. The season after, he would make his move to Rovers, signing initially on loan, helping Rovers to win the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy at the Millennium Stadium, assisting Rovers’ second goal in the 3-2 win after a long kick out from the edge of his area. Sullivan made the move permanent that summer, becoming Rovers’ number one and helping them to beat his former club Leeds in the League One play-off final in 2008, keeping a clean sheet. Sullivan would return to Wimbledon during the 2012/13 season whilst AFC were in League Two, making 20 appearances for the Dons. He returned to the Keepmoat Stadium for the final part of the campaign, playing on the final day at Brentford where Rovers would clinch the League One title, in what would be Sullivan’s last ever game of professional football. The second connection has been more recently on the books at AFC Wimbledon, with HARRY FORRESTER spending last season on loan with the Dons. After beginning his career with Aston Villa, he broke through with Brentford following his move to the Bees in 2011. One of Forrester’s most notable moments at Griffin Park came during the

16

ISSUE 11 v AFC WIMBLEDON

fourth round of the FA Cup in 2013, converting a penalty to equalise against Chelsea in a 2-2 draw, forcing a replay back at Stamford Bridge. Forrester would sign for Rovers in 2013, weeks after playing in Rovers’ dramatic win against Brentford on the final day of the season. Injuries restricted his appearances during his first season, but his second campaign at the Keepmoat Stadium saw him score nine goals in all competitions, including a late winner in a South Yorkshire derby at home to Barnsley. Forrester’s first goal of the 2015/16 would be a bizarre one, scoring from near the halfway line when attempting to play the ball back to Bury goalkeeper Christian Walton after an injury, with Leon Clarke being allowed to walk the ball in down the other end. He joined Rangers during the early part of 2016, helping them to complete a Scottish Championship and Challenge Cup double in his first campaign at Ibrox. After another season with the Gers, he joined the Dons last season, scoring three times in 36 league games, helping them to avoid relegation in the game at the Keepmoat Stadium in May. He left Rangers this summer, linking up with former Wales boss John Toshack in the Persian Gulf Pro League, signing a two year deal with Iranian side Tractor Sazi. Alex Gibbings

MEMORABLE MATCH AFC WIMBLEDON

MAY 1 2018

Rovers battled to a goalless draw at home to AFC Wimbledon in a game that saw limited opportunities for both sides. The visitors had the game’s opening opportunity after 10 minutes, Callum Kennedy stepping up to take the freekick on the edge of the area which was struck into the wall, with the ball falling back to the feet of Parrett on the edge of the box, but he could only strike over. Rovers went on the attack not long after, with good work down the right between Matty Blair and John Marquis opening up space for Issam Ben Khemis. The midfielder took a touch before shooting on goal, however his effort from the edge of the box fizzed just over the bar. The Dons came forward with intent as the half neared to a close, with Parrett swinging the ball over, finding Andy Barcham over on the far side. Barcham laid the ball back for Jon Meades, however his right-footed curler went just wide of Lawlor’s far post, leaving the Rovers defence relieved not to have been caught out by his effort from distance. After the interval, it was the Dons who had the first opportunity, with George

Long punting the ball forward looking for Lyle Taylor.

however Long got across to tip past the post and away for a Rovers corner.

Taylor let the ball bounce before striking on goal, however Niall Mason got a vital touch on the ball to deflect the shot over the crossbar.

Kwesi Appiah then had two great chances to hand the visitors the lead as the game ticked on, the first attempt being deflected just over the bar, after hooking Taylor’s ball back over the bar.

Marquis had the next opportunity to score, heading on goal following a flick on by Tom Anderson, however he could only direct the ball into the arms of Long. Blair was next to try his luck as he cut inside onto his weaker left-foot, but he couldn’t keep his effort down, shooting well over. Ben Whiteman then stepped forward with an effort on goal, looking to curl low past Long from 25 yards out,

That combination almost proved to be Rovers’ undoing not long afterwards, as Jimmy Abdou crossed in, and Taylor flicked on to Appiah. Appiah hit the ball first time, but with the ball looking destined for the bottom corner, Anderson got in front of the ball to put the ball behind for a corner, in what was the last action of a largely uneventful encounter.

WHAT HAPPENED NEXT? Rovers, who had sealed safety in Sky Bet League One for another season the Saturday before away at Oldham, faced alreadypromoted Wigan Athletic at the Keepmoat Stadium. The Latics needed just a point to seal the league title, with Blackburn Rovers hoping that Doncaster would do them a favour. Will Grigg had been on fire throughout the season, and he maintained that on the final day, scoring the only goal of the game in the second half to seal the title for Wigan. For the Wombles, the goalless draw would ensure that they would be in League One once again this season. Wimbledon faced already-relegated Bury at the Cherry Red Records Stadium on the final day of the season, going 2-0 up thanks to goals from Dean Parrett and Kwesi Appiah, before the Shakers salvaged a point with Neil Danns and a late George Miller strike. This would see the Dons finish their season with four consecutive draws, clear of the relegation zone by three points in 18th position, meaning that this will be their third season in League One this term.

THE

NUMBERS GAME THE ICONIC NO. 9 SHIRT, THE CENTREFORWARD’S TRADITIONAL NUMBER, IS CELEBRATED THROUGHOUT FOOTBALL AND COVETED BY ALL STRIKERS IN THE GAME. SINCE SQUAD NUMBERS WERE FIRST ALLOCATED BY DONCASTER ROVERS IN 2002-03 IT HAS BEEN WORN BY TWELVE DIFFERENT PLAYERS, PERHAPS A TESTIMONY TO THE PRESSURE THAT ACCOMPANIES THIS PARTICULAR SHIRT NUMBER. The first wearer, PAUL BARNES (2002-03) was typical of the breed of player associated with the No. 9 shirt. A powerful striker and a fine finisher, Barnes had a wealth of experience with Notts County, York City, Burnley and others before joining Rovers in 2001. He scored 25 goals in the Football Conference in 2002-03 as Rovers finished third, earning promotion via the play-offs, where he added a vital strike in the semi-final at Chester. His goal return was the best until John Marquis in 2016-17. Barnes left Rovers early in the 2003-04 season to join Tamworth. He was succeeded in the No.9 shirt by on-loan striker PETER HYNES (2003) and then by ADEBAYO AKINFENWA (2003). The latter, signed from Rushden & Diamonds, made a significant contribution to Rovers’ Division Three title push, scoring four times in nine appearances. For the 2004-05 season, the shirt passed to the former Scunthorpe United striker GUY IPOUA, and then to NEIL ROBERTS (2005-06). Roberts, who had previously worn No. 33, was a hard working forward who didn’t score many goals but who created plenty of openings for the likes of Paul Heffernan and Lewis Guy. His brother, Stephen, also played for Rovers between 2005 and 2008. The next No. 9 fitted the physical profile of the centre-forward even if he did his best work out wide. MARK MCCAMMON (2006-08) was tall and powerfully built andscored 13 goals in 70 senior appearances over two seasons. He had the honour of scoring the Keepmoat Stadium’s first goal after nine minutes of a 3-0 win over Huddersfield Town on 1st January 2007. He also contributed to Rovers’ promotion to the Championship, via the play-offs, in 2007-08. For the 2008-09 season the No. 9 shirt passed to DARREN BYFIELD, who failed to score in 16 appearances. Rovers then signed STEVE BROOKER (2009-11) a tall and strongly-built forward who was badly hampered by a chronic knee injury. Brooker missed the whole of the 2009-10 season and played

only 16 times in 2010-11, but he marked his final game with a well-taken goal in a 1-1 draw with Leicester City that secured Rovers’ survival in the Championship. In the summer of 2011 Rovers welcomed back CHRIS BROWN (2011-14) who had scored 10 times in 2003-04 when on loan from Sunderland (then he wore the No. 26 in the B.C. – Before Coppinger- era.) Injury prevented him making much of a contribution in 2011-12, but the following season he scored eight League goals and offered tireless work as Rovers won League One on the final day of the season. With Rovers back in the Championship for 2013-14, Brown enjoyed a fine season, scoring nine times in 40 League appearances but he couldn’t prevent relegation back to League One and he moved to Blackburn Rovers in the summer of 2014. The No. 9 passed to THEO ROBINSON, previously No. 22, for 2014-15 and then to the former Middlesbrough man CURTIS MAIN (2015-16). For 2016-17, with Rovers in League Two for the first time since 2004, the club recruited JOHN MARQUIS from Millwall. Marquis proved an instant hit, scoring 26 League goals, the best return by a Rovers striker since 1965-66 when Laurie Sheffield contributed 28. At the time of writing Marquis had an impressive return of 43 goals in 105 senior games for Rovers. That iconic No. 9 shirt currently has a worthy owner. JOHN COYLE

"WITH THE IMPRESSIVE COACHING AND COACH DEVELOPMENT ALREADY HERE, AN EFFECTIVE RECRUITMENT DEPARTMENT IS GOING TO PLAY A HUGE PART IN ENSURING WE CONTINUE PRODUCING YOUNG PEOPLE WITH EXCELLENT VALUES AND PLAYERS WHO WILL GO ON AND REPRESENT THE CLUB AT SENIOR LEVEL"

KIERAN SCARFF OUR ACADEMY PROGRAMME CONTINUES TO DEVELOP AND MAKE POSITIVE STRIDES FORWARD. While we place obvious priority on the development of our young players (both as footballers and people), we also place a huge emphasis on the development of our coaches. Our coach development programme, written and implemented by our had of coaching Tony Cook, is very, very impressive. The quality of the programme is being talked about and held up as best practice among staff at the EFL. We have a very committed and knowledgeable staff who consistently strive to provide the best opportunities for our players by placing high expectations of themselves and each other. The energy and support in this area really is very impressive.

appointed somebody to the post of head of Academy recruitment. Kevan Wildes has joined us, bringing with him years of experience in the role. Kevan will make a huge impact to the programme. Recruitment is, in my opinion, the most important job in the club. With the impressive coaching and coach development already here, an effective recruitment department is going to play a huge part in ensuring we continue producing young people with excellent values and players who will go on and represent the club at senior level. Good luck to the gaffer, staff and players ahead of today’s game.

An area of the Academy that we have highlighted internally in terms of making improvements is recruitment. I am delighted to say that we have recently

COMMERCIAL GOOD AFTERNOON AND WELCOME BACK TO THE KEEPMOAT STADIUM FOR OUR FIRST HOME CLASH IN THREE WEEKS. It seems so long ago since our last home encounter against Sunderland, so we are excited to open the doors today as we welcome AFC Wimbledon. Today’s visitors have failed to take points from their past seven league games, but Grant McCann’s side will be taking nothing for granted this afternoon as they look to recover from a bad patch of their own. We are delighted to welcome today’s match sponsors, Bidfood, one of the largest food wholesalers in the UK. Bidfood’s mission is to deliver service excellence, making life easier and helping customers to grow, whether that’s researching into food trends that help menus stay ahead of the curve, or into the latest technological advances. Also with us in hospitality today is Paul Bytheway, who is celebrating his 50th birthday with us by sponsoring today’s

matchball. We are honoured to host his birthday celebrations, and hope Paul and his family have a fantastic time with us. Finally we wish a warm welcome to match programme sponsor, SD Civils. Based in South Yorkshire they carry out civil engineering works throughout the UK to an extremely high standard, serving a range of different clients. We hope that all our sponsors

enjoy their time with us at today’s game. We are fast approaching Christmas, and there are a range of ways you can celebrate the season with Club Doncaster, whether that be through sponsorship, dining or an Official Partnership. SAFETY Three points is not the only priority today. Making sure everyone goes home safe is the most important result. Over recent months we have been working closely with the police and the EFL to review security at the Keepmoat Stadium. Now we are asking you to do your bit. It is vital that everyone - players, staff and supporters - remains vigilant and reports any concerns to stewards or police. Attacks might be rare, and the chance of you being caught up in one unlikely, but the message is ACT #ActionCountersTerrorism. Rovers safety officer Sam Ramsden said:

AD-105x148-Football Foundation.indd 1

"We want everyone to enjoy today’s game at the Keepmoat Stadium but if you see anything that causes you concern, tell a steward or staff member. Please do not worry that you might be wasting our time. "The stewards are here to help keep us all safe so please be patient and cooperate with their instructions. When it comes to security it has to be a team effort and we are all players." Here's a quick reminder of what you can do to help keep yourself and others safe: • Arrive early, allowing more time for security checks • Minimise what you carry, fewer bag searches will speed up entry to the ground

• Be vigilant at all times and if you see anything suspicious, tell a steward right away • If you see anything that could pose an immediate threat to safety, call 999 • In an emergency, listen to the public address instructions and follow them • If told to evacuate, do so immediately, do not wait around to film events on your mobile • Move right away from the stadium as quickly as possible for your safety and to allow clear access for any emergency vehicles • Once you are safe, follow the local police force on Twitter for updates To find out more, visit gov.uk/ACT or @TerrorismPolice

SUPPORTER LIAISON OFFICER DEAN MEDCALF GOOD AFTERNOON LADIES AND GENTLEMEN AND A WARM WELCOME KEEPMOAT STADIUM TO THE VISITING FANS FROM AFC WIMBLEDON.

If any of you have brought children to a match and you have been to visit our family stand, you will know that there is a range of different activities that the children can get involved in. Activities such as skillbased football drills and shooting practise drills with the foundation coaches, face painting and game consoles where the kids can play the new Fifa game, sometimes with a first-team player. These activities are all available for free in and around Donny Dogs Kennel. Many clubs have similar activities available in their family stands, but this year Rovers have offered these activates to the away fans as well. Since our first home game of the season against Wycombe Wanderers, the club has had members of the foundation coaching staff in the North Stand overseeing different activates

such as different football drills, a games console and face painting all available. We also added something a little different by offering a young fan the chance to paint a brick in the away end in their clubs colours to leave a lasting impression of their club in the Keepmoat Stadium. As well as this, families of the visiting club are able to purchase tickets for a specific block that will be reserved for families and young children, just like the option available for the home fans in the East Stand. This is something which I have received a lot of positive feedback from since its introduction. A lot of families from the visiting side have expressed how unique this is, how much the children have enjoyed being involved in these activities and how they have seen it as

something that would make them want to visit the Keepmoat again. From my personal experience, I have not seen any other club offer such activities to our fans; therefore it is great to see that what we offer may encourage other clubs to offer such activities in the near future. We hope that this new initiative will make peoples visit to the Keepmoat even more enjoyable and more memorable. As always I hope you all enjoy today’s game, if you have any questions then please contact me on the usual SLO social media accounts, @SLO_DRFC on twitter, DRFC SLO on Facebook or you can email me at dean.medcalf@ clubdoncaster.co.uk. SUPPORTERS CLUB PAUL MAYFIELD

A BIG WELCOME TO THE FANS, PLAYERS AND MANAGEMENT OF THE WOMBLES OF WIMBLEDON. I HOPE THEIR FANS HAVE HAD A GOOD TRIP UP FOR TODAY’S GAME, AND HOPE THEY ENJOY THE KEEPMOAT STADIUM EXPERIENCE.

It was brilliant to have 4,000 Sunderland fans in the away end for our last home match, which helped create a very good atmosphere. Since then we have had tremendous backing at Coventry, Charlton (great to have nearly 700 fans at the Valley) Chorley and Notts County. Wimbledon have lived the dream going from non-league, winning the FA Cup and getting into the Premiership then like the phoenix they have had to rise from the ashes, making their way back up the leagues, to where they are today. Our next away game is at Barnsley next week. Coaches depart Retford 12noon, Harworth 12.05pm, Bawtry/ Rossington 12.15pm, Punches 12.20pm, Infirmary 12.30pm, and the Keepmoat Stadium 12.45pm. Fares are £12 adult member and £11 under 16s, please add £2 for nonmembers. This is followed by Bristol Rovers on Saturday December 8. Coaches leave Retford at 8am, Harworth 8.05am, Bawtry/ Rossington 8.15am, Punches 8.20am, Infirmary 8.30am, Keepmoat Stadium 8.45am. Fares are £25 adult £23 concessions, add £2 for non-members.One of the buses s from Retford will be leaving earlier as we are making a stop en route for chipp butties and a pint at the Old Badger Inn at Easinington in Gloucestershire, if you want to book on the coaches

call Paul on 07961727769 or Len on 01302 817347 after 6pm. The cut off point is Wednesday. You can join on the coaches and get your discount straight away. Please see bus times and prices in this programme. Our North Branch also run coaches to away games from the Carcroft, Adwick A19 corridor, if you live from that side of town travel with a goods set of fans, call 07780-316923 Also if you travel to home games from the Retford, Harworth, Rossington area we run a coach to the Keepmoat Stadium. Departure time 1pm/6pm from Retford, Harworth 1.20pm/6.20pm and Rossington Styrupp and Labour Club 1pm/6.30pm. There is no need to book on this service. It’s nearly time for the Supporters Club Christmas draw tickets to go on sale, if you would like to sell on our behalf please don’t hesitate to get in touch with Paul. Or if you have a raffle prize you would like to donate. We will be selling tickets outside the Belle Vue Bar and at away games. The Supporters Club handbooks are now ready for collection from the Supporters Club Shop, situated in the Club Doncaster Academy. Hope you enjoy the game. Rovers Till We Die Paul Mayfield

VIKING SUPPORTERS CO-OPERATIVE Football is the national game, and football supporters are the lifeblood of the game. While many privately owned football clubs are well run, ours included, there are numerous examples over the years where this model of ownership has failed the supporters of that club, and has led to a number of clubs becoming either partly or fully owned by those supporters. The Minister Of Sport set up the Expert Working Group with the intention of looking at ways to improve engagement and dialogue between clubs and fans, and therefore to improve transparency and trust. The detailed recommendations from the EWG led to the government instructing the EFL and the Premier League to enter into structured dialogue with those supporters, and especially with the supporters trust at that club. As you may be aware the club hold two Meet The Owners events each year which meet the criteria set down by the EFL. On top of that the club have a Supporters Board which meets on a regular basis during the season to discuss a very broad range of topics. Suffice to say that DRFC have not only met the requirements but have exceeded them in both frequency and content, and that is something we can once again be proud of. Martin O'Hara

FOUNDATION UP

This year marked a new partnership for the Club Doncaster Foundation as we embarked on our first Autumn National Citizen Service (NCS) programme with Doncaster College, taking 40 learners for a two week programme where they experienced the three NCS phases of adventure, discovery and social action. The adventure phase saw participants travel to the Pennines

ISSUE 11 v AFC WIMBLEDON

for four days, where they pushed themselves out of their comfort zones, overcame fears and bonded as teams, doing activities such as abseiling, caving, hiking and rock climbing in an area of outstanding natural beauty. In discovery, the Dame Kelly Holmes Trust sent former European skateboarding champion Neil Danns and former world champion BMX racer Kelvin Batey to share experiences from their careers and help the groups make goals and raise their aspirations. We also welcomed Doncaster’s former WBA and IBF World Bantamweight Champion Jamie McDonnell – who held a Q&A presentation and gave the participants the opportunity to

wear the gloves and get coached by one of the world’s best. For social action the participants helped in the Doncaster community where their projects ranged from groundswork at Potteric Carr, taking care of rescue greyhounds and renovating a children’s play area. College tutor Kevin Neary said: “It’s been an incredible experience for us all, we are so grateful for the Club Doncaster Foundation putting this together”. NCS Coordinator Dale Tomlinson added: “It’s been an amazing journey, and even though the programme has been short, we can see a real change in the participants, they’ve made memories that will last a lifetime.” NCS is open for all 15-17 year olds who have not done the programme before. We are running 6 waves over the summer, and you can sign up for a three week experience for just £35. For more information or to sign up head to www.ncsyes.co.uk now!

DATE As part of its mission to grow understanding around health and wellbeing Club Doncaster Foundation pledged its support of World Diabetes Day, the world’s largest diabetes awareness campaign. The day, which took place on Wednesday, centres around raising awareness of the impact that diabetes has on family life, while also promoting the role of the family in the management, care, prevention and education of the condition. The campaign signifies the unity of the global diabetes community in response to the diabetes epidemic, something which the foundation promotes through their programmes. Club Doncaster Foundation already promotes healthy living across Doncaster, with the Fit Rovers campaign one of the many successful programmes ran by the foundation throughout the year. A staggering 80% per cent of type two diabetes cases are preventable through the adoption of a healthy lifestyle, according to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF). Health and wellbeing officer Scott Copeland understands how important raising the awareness of diabetes is,. He said: “Ninety per cent of people who are living with Diabetes have Type 2, the condition heavily linked with lifestyle factors. It is no secret that people who are overweight, carry a lot of weight around their middle and who have high blood pressure, are at an increased risk of developing the condition. “The work of our team on Fit Rovers has helped more than 200 men lose weight, reduce their waistline, improve their blood pressure and live generally healthier lives. “One session of the eight-week course is geared towards diabetes awareness where we highlight the signs and symptoms of the condition and encourage people to have a test if they feel the need. “Recently two graduates of our course have reported positive news that their diabetes medication has been reduced as a result of the changes they have made to their lifestyles.” The IDF and the World Health Organization, in response to growing concerns about the escalating health threat posed by diabetes, created World Diabetes Day in 1991. It has since become an official United Nations Day and it is marked every year on November 14, the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting, who co-discovered insulin along with Charles Best in 1922.
