THE MANAGER

THE MANAGER

DARREN MOORE Good afternoon. I’d like to welcome the supporters, players and staff of Accrington Stanley who have travelled over today. Last Saturday’s game at AFC Wimbledon was frustrating, and to be honest we should have been out of sight at half-time. To then come away without any points felt like a kick in the teeth - especially with the nature of the two goals conceded.

Niall Ennis is back fit and raring to go

05

We have had a good week down at the training ground in Cantley Park and we have been working hard out on the grass. We’re also looking a bit stronger in terms of squad numbers, with Tom Anderson back from suspension today and both Cameron John and Niall Ennis both back fully fit and raring to go. That is good news because we are going to need everyone we can get our hands on as we enter a busy festive period - games come thick and fast and there’s not a lot of time for recovery between matches. As this is the last game before Christmas I would like to extend my best wishes to everyone in the Club Doncaster family. May God bless you and your family with peace this Christmas and for the year to come. As we end 2019 we inevitably look back on the past 12 months. For me it has been a year of change: the most significant being given the opportunity to return to Doncaster and manage this special club. I have been made to feel so welcome

back in South Yorkshire it felt like I had never been away.

be our 12th man, we need you all behind us - we all appreciate it.

The support from Rovers fans has been magnificent this season and your continued backing is going to be vital as we face four games in the next 12 days. You really can

Merry Christmas and enjoy the game.

THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE

CHIEF EXECUTIVE

GAVIN BALDWIN Good afternoon and welcome to the Keepmoat Stadium. I’d like to welcome the supporters, owners, staff and players of Accrington Stanley who have made the trip across the M62 today. On behalf of the owners and staff here at Club Doncaster I would like to wish you all a merry Christmas. I have been watching the videos produced by our communications team for their 12 Days of Christmas project where we set out to reward fans who deserved a little thank you. It is the people that make up any football club, and we pride ourselves on having staff who take the time to acknowledge that. We were not happy with the second half at AFC Wimbledon last weekend, though there were a lot of positives to take from the first half and had we been more clinical in that spell it could have been a different story. There can be no questioning the commitment of players and staff, though, and I’m sure you will see a reaction this afternoon. We know that with the January transfer window approaching there is going to be some work to be done, and our newlyappointed talent identification manager Adam Henshall has been working hard with Darren

BRAD HALLIDAY After signing for Rovers in the summer, Brad Halliday has gone on to start every game the club have played in all competitions this season. His consistency from the right back role has seen him become one of the first names on the team-sheet when Darren Moore selects his side. He has enjoyed getting up to speed at Sky Bet League One level, having spend the majority of his career prior to this season in the league below. “It’s been great for me, I settled in quite quickly and I managed to hit the ground running in pre-season and gone on to play a lot of games,” he says. “It was strange for me signing for one manager and then coming in to work with another, it’s not something that’s happened to me before. “I was looking forward to coming in anyway and the gaffer has given me an opportunity to play games at this level. I can’t fault him and he’s been brilliant working with myself and the other lads over the past few months. “It’s nice to have him believing in me and

how I play, I feel like I’m already learning a lot from him in a short space of time. “Throughout my career I’ve always played quite a lot of games throughout each season so the longevity and ability to stay fit has always been there. “I try to be as consistent as I can every week, everyone has an off day but I push myself to be as good as I can in each game.” As one of several new arrivals in the summer, Halliday admits it took him a couple of weeks to get up to speed with things. The appointment of Darren Moore gave him that time to push his body to it’s limits while trying to impress the new manager. Moore has given Halliday and fellow full-back Reece James the licence to get forward down the flanks, a system which often sees the pair popping up in opposition side’s penalty areas.

“When I first came it took me a couple of weeks to adapt to the system, but I think that was the same with everyone having had a new manager come in,” he says. “That probably helped me because it gave me that time and breathing space to get myself up to the standard required. “Pre-season enabled me to get myself fit and make sure I was capable of playing to a good level week in, week out. “The manager gives us freedom to go and play, myself on Reece on the other side have got that freedom to get forward and join in with attacks. “That’s what I want to do and why I came here, I’m still looking for that first league goal and hopefully when it comes I’ll get a couple more.” Having had several changes alongside him in the back four this season, Halliday says Rovers have had to adapt to injuries problems at different points in the campaign. The defender knows whoever plays in the heart of the back-line will be easy to play with though, as a result of extensive work put in on the training pitch. “There have been a few changes in the back four this season but I think we’ve adapted to them really well,” says Halliday. “It’s been unfortunate with quite a few centre-halves getting injured and missing chunks of the season up to now. “In the main though we’ve dealt with it quite well, the players who are coming in are good players which makes things easier.

HALLIDAY

F E AT U R E I N T E R V I E W

“We have the understanding with whoever is playing because we work every day in training to build that. “Hopefully from now until the end of the season we can have a more settled back four and climb up the table.” After picking up just one win in their past nine games in all competitions, now is the time for Rovers to put a run of victories together in Sky Bet League One. This afternoon’s game against Accrington Stanley at the Keepmoat Stadium is their first of four they will play in just 12 days over the festive period. Having experienced the busy schedule before, Halliday says he doesn’t sacrificing time with his family for the career he has. “Over the Christmas period it’s important to pick up points, you play a lot of games in a short period of time. It is a fair chunk of the season played over those weeks and if you do well then it can shoot you up the table.

If we get some wins then it will stand us in good stead for the rest of the season and we can look forward to that. “Some players might disagree but personally I don’t mind it, some boys might have children but I haven’t so it’s not as much of a sacrifice. “We’re all fortunate to have the career we do so we can’t complain that we have to cut back on the festivities while the family are enjoying themselves. “Personally I think it’s the best job in the world so coming in a couple of days over Christmas doesn’t effect me.” Having spent a season on loan at Stanley in the 2015/16 campaign, Halliday is looking forward to reacquainting himself with some familiar faces. “I’m looking forward to going up against them, I worked well with the coaching staff there and they gave me a great chance” he adds. “It was my last loan before I joined Cambridge permanently so that sort of put me in the shop window for a move. “We did well in the season I was there so it will be nice to see some familiar faces, but I hope we get the job done on the day. “A win will send everyone into the Christmas week with a smile on their face, so hopefully we can get that and get ourselves back in the winning groove.”

ACCRINGTON STANLEY:

FOUR TO WATCH D I M I TA R

EVTIMOV The Bulgarian international was handed the No.1 jersey by manager John Coleman when he signed for the club in January 2019 after Connor Ripley was recalled by Middlesbrough. Standing at 6ft 3in, he is a goalkeeper who has great presence in the area.

SEAN

MCCONVILLE A steady level-headed figure who has ran the midfield at Accrington since he joined them in 2015 from Chester. For the three seasons he spent in League Two with Stanley he appeared a combined 126 times. He was part of the team that won the League Two title in 2017/18 – the club’s first promotion to League One since reforming. The 30-year-old does have an eye for goal. Prior to this season, over his first four terms at the club he had a combined 37 strikes to his name – his most prolific season coming last year in League One.

ROSS

SYKES The Burnley-born defender made the switch from his hometowns Academy to Accrington’s in 2015, signing a professional deal with the club a year later. He was loaned to Southport during the 2017/18 season to get more experience of men’s football. That worked out for the 20-year-old who, upon his return, was given the green light to grace Stanley’s first-team.

OFFRANDE

ZANZALA

The striker went to school with current Rovers forward Kwame Thomas and the pair both begun their careers at Derby County together. When Zanzala was released by the Rams in 2018, it instigated a move to Accrington. Not only is the striker well known to a Rovers players but fans will remember him for scoring a late goal against Grant McCann’s side in October 2018 at the WHAM Stadium to snatch a 1-0 win.

15

IN OPPOSITION

ROSS ETHERIDGE

Former Rovers manager Darren Ferguson recruited Etheridge, who had enjoyed an impressive spell at Accrington, as he looked to rebuild his side to push for promotion from League Two in 2016/17. During his one season at Stanley he kept nine clean sheets in 21 games. He started the season as first choice at Rovers, making his debut against his former club on the opening day of the campaign, but faced stiff competition from Marko Marosi then Ian Lawlor. Injury then hit his chances and, after loan spells at Alfreton Town and Lincoln City, he joined non-league side Nuneaton in January 2018 after clocking up eight competitive outings for Rovers.

JOE WRIGHT

16

The centre-back had been a team-mate of Ross Etheridge at Accrington and was reunited with him at Rovers in the summer of 2016. He joined on a Bosman transfer after leaving Huddersfield. His first season at Rovers brought a promotionwinning medal as he helped his side finish in the top-three in League Two, and he has now featured in 93 first-team games for Rovers . A tally that would have certainly been higher had it not been for frustrating injuries which kept him out of large periods of last season and this. His former club Huddersfield loaned Wright out to Accrington in the summer of 2015. Later he made his debut against Luton Town and forged his way into the team for the remainder of the season.

BRAD HALLIDAY

A new recruit who joined the ranks at Rovers this summer after spending three-years with Cambridge United in League Two. Prior to that he was in the youth set-up at Middlesbrough, which was near to his home town of Redcar.

SHARED 5-A-SIDE To get a taste of first-team action he was loaned out to York City and Hartlepool United between 2014 and 2015. A season-long loan in 2015/16 came at Accrington where he played in the same defence as Ross Etheridge and Joe Wright - his bond with Joe was close on and off the pitch, as they shared the same hotel room during their loan spell.

DANNY WEBBER

The striker retired from the professional in 2016 after two-years firing Salford City up the pyramid. Before then he was an Accrington player for one season - he represented them 22 times, scoring three goals. His move to Stanley came after his very short stint at Rovers where he joined the club on non-contract terms in 2013 – but never featured at the Keepmoat Stadium.

GREGG BLUNDELL

Was a Rovers player between 2003 and 2005, shooting on all cylinders under Dave Penney where he scored 28 goals while in red and white. This triggered a move to Chester, but injury really hampered his time at the Deva Stadium. A move to Darlington followed two-years later where he was reunited with Dave Penney, and from there he had a loan spell at Accrington. He studied for a degree in physiotherapy and is currently a physio with Premier League side Liverpool.

PAST RECORD PAST PASTRECORD RECORD

17 Historically Rovers have had the edge in this fixture, but since Accrington Stanley’s return to the EFL it has been the side from Lancashire who have the better record. A 2-0 Football League Trophy win for Rovers in November 2006 was the first meeting since the 1960s, with Paul Heffernan and Sean Thornton the goalscorers, but it is also the last time Rovers recorded victory in the fixture - with five meetings since. Prior to Accrington's reformation and return to the league, you have to go back to the early sixties for previous meetings. Rovers last league win over Accrington came in March 1961 when Albert Broadbent's goal sealed a 1-0 success at Belle Vue. Trips to Accrington have been less fruitful for Rovers - you have to go back to 1947 for the last time it yielded three points. Rovers in fact recorded two victories in Accrington that season - with a 5-0 FA Cup second round replay win followed by a 1-0 success in the league.

ROVERS MANAGERS

IN THE HOT SEAT:

DONCASTER ROVERS MANAGERS FROM 1920

BILLY BREMNER (1978-1985; 1989-1991) In November 1978 Rovers’ Board made an ambitious appointment. The man chosen to succeed Stan Anderson was to be Billy Bremner, the former Leeds United and Scotland captain. Not since the appointment of Peter Doherty had Rovers chosen such a famous personality to manage them: not since Doherty’s appointment had they chosen so well. Bremner’s record at Leeds included League Championship and FA Cup winners’ medals and he had also won 54 full caps for Scotland. A small, skilful player, Bremner was most noted for the passion, spirit and determination he brought to his play. In short, he was a winner and he was determined to be a winner as a manager. Bremner’s strategy was to blend youth and experience: he gave opportunities to youngsters like Daral Pugh, Steve Lister, Shaun Flanagan and Ian Snodin. At the same time, he signed veterans including Hugh Dowd, Alan Little, Ian Nimmo and Alan Warboys. The strategy took time to bear fruit, but in 1980-81 Rovers won promotion from Division Four, finishing in third place. The team was neither the best nor most exciting to grace Belle Vue, but its spiritwas unquenchable. 11,373, Rovers’ biggest League gate since 1975, saw the 2-1 win over Bournemouth in May that clinched promotion. The next two seasons, in Division Three, were difficult and after just surviving in 1981-82, Rovers were relegated a year later. Bremner regrouped and rebuilt for 1983-84, keeping the core of young talentthe Snodins, Lister, Billy Russell, Glenn Humphries and Colin Douglas- and adding the experienced Bill Green, Ernie Moss and Andy Kowalski. Moss and Douglas formed a fine partnership, netting 30 League goals between them. Rovers were defeated only twice at home and after a thrilling battle with eventual champions York City, they went up in second place. Bremner was helped by the

financial backing of Peter Wetzel, a clothing manufacturer who had recently joined the Board. He financed the signings of defender John Philliben, plus midfielder Jim Dobbin and striker Alan Brown. Those signings suggested Rovers were serious about making progress in Division Three and they did so, finishing 14th but at times threatening to break into the promotion places. Highlights of the season came in the FA Cup, with a 1-0 home victory over First Division QPR followed by defeat to eventual League Champions Everton in the Fourth Round. Events off the field conspired to halt Rovers’ progress. The club had to sell the Snodin brothers (Ian to Leeds, Glynn to Sheffield Wednesday) in order to finance urgent ground improvements. Bremner reinforced his defence and Rovers began 1985-86 unbeaten in seven games. However, in October 1985 Bremner was offered the job at his former club Leeds United and left Rovers after seven years in charge. His second spell came with Rovers in different circumstances, having been relegated to Division Four in 1988 and having endured a dreadful couple of seasons under Bremner’s former playing rival, Dave Mackay. The mood at the club was lifted but results were slow to follow. Rovers reached the Northern Final of the Football League Trophy in 1989-90, just missing out on a first trip to Wembley, but finished only 20th in Division Four. The next season was better, and Rovers led the table on three occasions before falling away in the second half of the season. After a disastrous start to 1991-92, Bremner decided enough was enough, resigning in early November 1991. That was the end of his managerial career, although he worked as a radio pundit before his early death, aged 54, in 1997. He deserves to be remembered as one of Rovers’ finest managers. John Coyle

THE ACADEMY

Rovers U16s defeated Northampton Town in the EFL U16s National Final to be crowned national champions. The final, which was played at Derby County Academy, saw the winner of the Northern Regional Final (Rovers) take on the winner of the Southern Regional Final (Northampton) to find out who would take home the trophy. Rovers saw off tough competition from seven Category 3 Academies to finish top of the table in their EFL mini league to qualify for the Northern Regional Final. They progressed with a convincing win over their opponents – Shrewsbury Town – to book their place in the National Final.

The weather conditions and strong wind made for a difficult afternoon for both sides but – despite going behind early in the match – Rovers were able to cope with the challenges better than their opponents, regain their composure and come from behind to claim the victory.

"While player development is at the forefront of everyone's work, this competitive element to the programme gives the boys a taste of what is required as they go through the levels"

The final was a good battle between two very strong U16s teams and was evenly contested for much of the 90 minutes. Both defences and goalkeepers were busy throughout but Rovers proved more clinical in the end.

Lead Youth Development Phase coach and U16s head coach Tony Mee said: “Everyone in the Academy is very proud of the achievement. While player development is at the forefront of everyone's work, this competitive element to the programme gives the boys a taste of what is required as they go through the levels.

“We are also extremely grateful to the families who make great sacrifices to allow our young people the opportunity to participate at this level".

Hello everyone!

Happy Birthday MALC 50 years young!

Welcome to our game against Accrington Stanley. First of all can I wish you all a very Merry Christmas. It is my Christmas party after the game and I am looking forward to seeing all of you who got a ticket. I might even have a special guest joining me this year (I can’t wait). The 12 Days of Christmas videos have started to go out on our club social media and I do like my appearances. The videos are fantastic and even I got emotional. Well done to everyone involved. See you all at our next game on December 29. In the meantime, four more sleeps!

Enjoy the game, Donny Dog

DONCASTER BELLES

The Belles rounded off 2019 with a win as they overcame stern opposition in AFC Doncaster in the third round of the Sheffield and Hallamshire FA County Cup on Sunday. Nadia Khan’s ninth minute effort was all the Belles needed to seal progression through to the next stage of the local cup competition, though it perhaps should have been more in blustery conditions at Club Doncaster Sports Park. The woodwork was hit three times by Lily Wishart alone during the game, with Tori Thomas also striking a post, though visiting keeper Sophie Brown also proved difficult for the Belles to beat, but ultimately it would be the Belles who claimed town bragging rights. It was the visitors who got forward first, with Gemma Harte looking to pull the ball across goal; her ball in was a dangerous one but no one in luminous yellow was able to get a definitive touch. Wishart went close down the other end as she looked to lob the ball over Brown, only for the ball to get caught in the wind and end up in the arms of the AFC Doncaster goalkeeper. The Belles took the lead on nine minutes, with Wishart cutting inside on to her left foot to shoot, only for her effort to bounce away off the post. Khan was quickest to the rebound ever, beating Brown to the ball to tap into an empty net and hand the Belles an early advantage. Brown was being kept in the opening stages and she was on hand to deny Chloe Bethell a goal 10 minutes later, with the Belles’ No.8 cutting inside to shoot, only for Brown to get down well to make a save. Khan was in the mood to add to her tally and she broke through into the area in search of her second goal, only to be thwarted by the onrushing Brown once more. Two minutes later Brown would be

called into action once again with the lively Wishart looking to get on the scoresheet for the first time this season, though the visiting stopper held her effort well. The visitors almost got back into the game with two efforts in quick succession from Jessica Andrew, firstly seeing an effort deflected wide across goal, before diverting her next shot from Natalie Tomkins’ corner just past the post.

Brown was being kept as busy as ever with Gill next to test her as she looked to score with a free-kick from a tight angle, only to see the AFC Doncaster number one beat the ball away. Thomas then had Brown stranded as she took aim from 20 yards out after getting into space, though her shot struck the outside of the post and went behind with the goalkeeper’s feet firmly planted.

Charlotte Gill was next to go close for the Belles as she fired over from close range following a cross in from the left-hand side by the returning Kirsty Smith.

The woodwork was struck for a fourth time with Khan fizzing a ball across the six-yard box for Wishart who once more found the crossbar from close range.

Wishart hit the woodwork for a second time in the first half as she took aim from the edge of the area, only for her effort to come crashing away off the crossbar, before Harte fired one over the bar down the other end following another Tomkins corner.

Bethell went close with a header late on for the Belles, whilst the visitors also piled pressure as the clock ticked towards full-time, but the Belles held on for the win and they progress through to the last eight of the County Cup.

After the break, the Belles continued to search for the allimportant second goal, with Brown alert to divert Bethell’s low cross away from any danger.

The Belles are without a game now until the new year, with their first game of 2020 to come in the form of a FAWNL Division One Midlands game away at Leafield Athletic on Sunday January 12.

SAFETY Three points is not the only priority today. Making sure everyone goes home safe is the most important result. Over recent months we have been working closely with the police and the EFL to review security at the Keepmoat Stadium. Now we are asking you to do your bit. It is vital that everyone - players, staff and supporters - remains vigilant and reports any concerns to stewards or police. Attacks might be rare, and the chance of you being caught up in one unlikely, but the message is ACT #ActionCountersTerrorism. Rovers safety officer Sam Ramsden said:

"We want everyone to enjoy today’s game at the Keepmoat Stadium but if you see anything that causes you concern, tell a steward or staff member. Please do not worry that you might be wasting our time. "The stewards are here to help keep us all safe so please be patient and cooperate with their instructions. When it comes to security it has to be a team effort and we are all players." Here's a quick reminder of what you can do to help keep yourself and others safe: • Arrive early, allowing more time for security checks • Minimise what you carry, fewer bag searches will speed up entry to the ground

• Be vigilant at all times and if you see anything suspicious, tell a steward right away • If you see anything that could pose an immediate threat to safety, call 999 • In an emergency, listen to the public address instructions and follow them • If told to evacuate, do so immediately, do not wait around to film events on your mobile • Move right away from the stadium as quickly as possible for your safety and to allow clear access for any emergency vehicles • Once you are safe, follow the local police force on Twitter for updates To find out more, visit gov.uk/ACT or @TerrorismPolice

SUPPORTERS CLUB

SUPPORTERS CLUB A big warm welcome to all the supporters for today’s game. We would like to welcome to all the Accrington Stanley Supporters who have made the trip over the M62 to the Keepmoat Stadium - I hope they enjoy their day out with us and like the Rovers experience, besides the result, and have a safe return journey. Accrington are having a fair start to the season, and have had some notable scalps the main one being league leaders Ipswich Town 2-0 and recently beat Bolton 7-1 - they have a very loyal fan base and in John Coleman, they have an excellent manager so we can expect a close game today. We have had some long away games recently, and credit to the fans who made the trip to Wimbledon for the second time in a month. And with the busy festive period coming up, and now we have the Sunderland away game put on to a Friday night, and the Tranmere game re arranged for Tuesday February 4. We still have Shrewsbury, Portsmouth and Bolton games to reschedule so it is going to be a busy period. Again this season we will be running coaches to all home and away games, thesheet with times and prices on are included in the programme but are subject to change. We have tried to keep the prices as low as we can but had to introduce a travel policy for under 16s who have to have a responsible adult travel with them.Fans who are 16-17-years-old need a consent form from their parents or guardiansto travel. These can be downloaded from the Supporters Club website, on the bus or at the Supporters Club office based in the Club Doncaster Academy. As always we will run the home match bus from Retford, Harworth and Rossington Styrupp and Labour club, times are 1pm (6pm) 1.20pm (6.20pm) and 1.30pm(6.30pm). Times in brackets are night games, and there is no need to book. For fans’ safety we will be picking up on the inner circle adjacent to Car Park 2 this season, so

you can leave your car there. You can join the Supporters Club on the bus and get discount straight away, or join online or at Supporters shop located in the ClubDoncaster Academy. The price is £7 adult and £5 concessions. Call Paul on 07961727769 or Len on 01302 817347 for more details and bookings. The North Branch also run coaches to most away games, from the Adwick, Carcroft, A19 corridor area. If you wish to travel with them call 07780316923. They are a great set of lads and lasses, and do a lot of raffles to support local charities. As in previous years the Supporters Club are having weekend trips away, the North Branch will be stopping in Blackpool for the Accrington game and the Retford Branch will also be stopping in Blackpool for the last game of the season at Bloomfield Road. Call Paul on 07961727769 if interested. Both trips will be £150 inc. two nights bed, breakfast and evening meal. Not many places are left. Hopefully by the time you read this I will have delivered most of the prizes from our Christmas Draw, the full list of winners is in today’s programme and on the Rovers official website. Thanks to everyone who sold or bought tickets for the raffle. The VSC and the Supporters Club are now involved the IAG in conjunction with the South Yorkshire Police, In a supporters led initiative, to cut down on anti-social behaviour at games, how the policing of matches come about, trying to make it a more pleasurable experience going along to the games. The Rovers show on Trax FM has now moved to a Friday night spot from 6pm til 7pm, with me and Mellony Shepperd talking all things Rovers and local nonleague football, well worth a listen. From everyone at the Supporters Club, we wish you all a merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Enjoy the game. And get behind the team. Rovers Till We Die Paul Mayfield

VIKING SUPPORTERS CO-OPERATIVE Football is the national game, and football supporters are the lifeblood of the game. While many privately owned football clubs are well run, ours included, there are numerous examples over the years where this model of ownership has failed the supporters of that club, and has led to a number of clubs becoming either partly or fully owned by those supporters. The Minister Of Sport set up the Expert Working Group with the intention of looking at ways to improve engagement and dialogue between clubs and fans, and therefore to improve transparency and trust. The detailed recommendations from the EWG led to the government instructing the EFL and the Premier League to enter into structured dialogue with those supporters, and especially with the supporters trust at that club. As you may be aware the club hold two Meet The Owners events each year which meet the criteria set down by the EFL. On top of that the club have a Supporters Board which meets on a regular basis during the season to discuss a very broad range of topics. Suffice to say that DRFC have not only met the requirements but have exceeded them in both frequency and content, and that is something we can once again be proud of. Martin O'Hara

Students at Club Doncaster Sports College were treated to a visit from Rovers player Matty Blair last month. Having already seen James Coppinger and Alfie May pop into the Sports College in September, the students were given more exposure to the Rovers’ first team in the shape of Matty. With the new academic year in full swing, students at the Sports College took part in a Q&A session, learning all about the day-to-day routines of being a professional footballer. Blair, who is in his fourth season at the club, highlighted some of the best moments in his career to the students, including playing against Premier League side Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium. He said: “I have a lot to thank my dad and brother for. They really did look after me.

"Whatever I decided to do, they supported me and made me the man I am today. It wasn’t just in football that they guided me with, it was all aspects of life.” Blair has once again been chosen as a Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) ambassador for Club Doncaster Foundation in 2019/20, continuing his involvement in community projects like Fit Rovers. The current EFL League One Community Player of the Year named teammate Coppinger as his favourite footballer, stating how his commitment and dedication to the sport is a credit to the sport. He said: “A lot of people say Messi and Ronaldo, but on a personal

level for me, Coppinger is one of my favourite players. “I’ve had the pleasure to play with him since I joined Doncaster and he is just next level.” Blair will be working closely with health project Fit Rovers again throughout 2019/20 but has expressed a desire to have a larger part in the education set up, helping expose the Sports College when he can. He added: “It’s always a pleasure to visit the college. The staff do a fantastic job and have done great things for education in Doncaster.” For more information on Club Doncaster Sports College, please go to www. clubdoncastersportscollege.co.uk.

A total of 28 participants from local Premier League Kicks sessions were invited to celebrate the programme relaunch during Rovers’ home game against Burton Albion last month.

41

All those involved were present at the Keepmoat Stadium to celebrate the commitment from the Premier League to fund the community programme for another three years. This investment will enable more than 175,000 young people to access Premier League Kicks sessions across England and Wales by 2022. Before Rovers’ entertaining 2-2 draw with Burton Albion, the Kicks participants were treated to a matchday experience including a stadium tour, skill challenges and flag-bearing while the players walked out onto the pitch. At half-time, the participants were invited back onto the pitch to take penalties against Rovers mascot Donny Dog, before celebrating in front of the black band stand. Jo Evans, parent of participants Oliver, said: “I just wanted to say a big thank you to the Kicks staff for inviting Oliver along to the match day experience on Saturday. “It was a fantastic experience for all the kids and parents. Oliver had the

most amazing day; he loved every single minute of it.” Premier League Kicks gives young people access to free football sessions, sports sessions and workshops, providing them with opportunities, support and pathways to achieve their full potential. It sees club community staff working closely with young people and authorities in their local area to create stronger, safer and more inclusive communities. Aimed at eight-to-18-year-olds, Kicks engages young people in positive activities through their passion for football, while also addressing topics covering everything from equality and inclusion to youth violence and knife crime.

The Foundation has been running Premier League Kicks sessions for the past seven years and encourages nearly 1000 participants to take part in positive activity each year. Mark Cooper, sport development officer at the Foundation, said: “Our Kicks programme has allowed us to engage with young people in hard to reach areas across Doncaster. “This Kicks relaunch went really well. The amount of positive feedback we have had from parents and from the Kicks participants is fantastic. We look forward to the next three years of sessions.” To find out more about Premier League Kicks or to find a local session, head to www. clubdoncasterfoundation.co.uk
