THE MANAGER
DARREN MOORE Good afternoon, I’d like to welcome Karl Robinson as well as the supporters, players and staff of Oxford as we start 2020 off with a home game. Oxford were really impressive in the reverse fixture down at the Kassam Stadium and have proven themselves as a quality team. Today we are pleased to be able to confirm a new contract for Tom Anderson, news which gets the year off to a brilliant start for us. Tom has been a key player for us this season, and a real leader for us on and off the pitch.
Tom Anderson has been a real leader on and off the pitch and has put pen to paper on a new deal
He still has plenty of years left in the game, has good experience for his age, and is a really important player for us. I hope supporters see this as the next step in our long-term squad building, following on from the new contract we agreed with Ben Whiteman before Christmas. Both have been fantastic players to work with, they deserve their new deals and will hopefully continue to play big parts for us for the rest of this season and beyond. Enjoy the game.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE
GAVIN BALDWIN Good afternoon and welcome back to the Keepmoat Stadium as we kick off 2020. And it is great to be able to start the year off with some fantastic news as part of our long-term planning with confirmation Tom Anderson has signed a new contract to keep him at the club until the summer of 2022. Big Tom has been a rock for us in the centre of defence this season, and fully deserves his new deal. He has looked calm and composed, whomever he has played alongside at the back, and is a real leader on and off the pitch. He is a really popular character around the club with players and staff, and with confirmation of the contract following on from the one signed by Ben Whiteman prior to Christmas we can feel pleased that we are shaping a squad to give us a good chance of reaching the play-offs this season but also beyond. January will be busy for us behind the scenes, there is a lot of work that goes into every potential signing that supporters don’t get to see. Adam Henshall who joined us recently as talent identification manager, has been very busy since his arrival speaking to clubs about players - and his remit includes both the immediate needs of the firstteam, but also succession planning, the U23 and Academy squads and strengthening links with clubs for future transfer windows. Enjoy the game.

TOM ANDERSON Tom Anderson’s performances in Sky Bet League One this season have made him a firm fans favourite at Rovers. 08
His passion and ability to get into the right positions on the field have often made it difficult for opposition strikers to get the better of him. The club have therefore acted quickly to tie the centre-back down to a new deal until the summer of 2022. “It’s very pleasing to get the new deal signed, I’m happy to be staying here because I’ve loved my time here so far,” he says. “It’s good to have worked for the extension, and now I’ve got the security which is nice for me and my family. “I’m almost 27 now and to get a contract where my future is set out for me is a weight off my mind and now I can concentrate solely on football. “It’s been in the process for a few weeks now, I had a good start to the season
after not getting much game time last year. “I didn’t get much of it last season but felt that whenever I did play I did well, so the club knew what I was capable of.” After a stop-start campaign last season, where he was in and out of the team under former manager Grant McCann, Anderson admits entering the final year of his contract put more pressure on him to perform. He believes that is something he has taken in his stride though, and had no hesitation when the club first approached him about extending his stay in South Yorkshire. “Even when I first came here on loan two years ago the club felt like home so it was an easy decision to stay and something I really wanted to do,” he says.

“Since the manager and Jamie Smith came in they’ve done a lot of work with me and I feel like I have really benefitted from that. “You think of all sorts sometimes when you’re in the last year of your contract and that was the case for me during the summer. “As a footballer if the final year of your deal goes wrong then it can make your next career move a very difficult one. “You just have to work hard and try to put a good run of performances together, and then contract talks will take care of themselves. For me I set short and long-term goals as an individual and as a team, that needs to be the case if you want to get better.” Anderson’s new contract sees him follow in the footsteps of his good friend and team captain Ben Whiteman, who recently put pen to paper until the summer of 2023. He hopes that will convince other players to stay, as well as having an impact on players that manager Darren Moore may look to recruit. “Seeing Ben sign his new deal was good for me, he’s a key player for us and had an unbelievable season last year,” he says. “It’s quite a big statement from the club to tie him down for a long period of time, he will kick on now and keep improving. “Hopefully to the players the club want to keep and bring in, seeing players agree contracts will push them to do the same.

NDERSO
“A lot of the time seeing a settled squad can attract players and make them want to come here to improve us. “We’ve got a lot of good players and good people here, so hopefully over the next couple of transfer windows we can add to that and complement what we’ve got.” Anderson and Whiteman are part of a car school along with Reece James and Jon Taylor, travelling in together from Lancashire every day. That has added to the team unity within the group, meaning that relationships build on and off the field. “The car school should be safe for a good couple of years now, Alex Baptiste is set to be a part of it as well so we may have two up and running soon,” he says. “It’s always good when you have a few good lads in there with you to travel in with in the early mornings. “You get a lot of team bonding done on the journeys to and from training and that helps with relationships on the pitch. “It’s not very often you get
a group of lads all from a similar area so we’re lucky to have that friendship going. “If lads are close off the pitch it can only improve you on it, you know how to get the best out of each other.” After his red card at Wycombe Wanderers in November, Anderson was forced to miss three games leading into the Christmas period. While it was frustrating time to come out of the team, he enjoyed getting minutes in the
Leasing.com Trophy and in reserve team games. He returned ahead of the game against Accrington Stanley on December 20, in a much needed boost for Darren Moore heading into a run of four games in the space of 12 days. “It seemed like my suspension went on for a while and I’ve been ticking games off as they have gone by over the past couple of weeks,” he adds. “I managed to get 90 minutes in against Leicester U21s in the Leasing.com Trophy and then played a couple of reserve games which kept me ticking over. “Those games really helped me and made sure I didn’t get rusty, and once it had come to an end I was raring to go. “It was disappointing to come at the time it did as I felt my performances had been good, but it’s part of football and you just have to get on with it. “It wasn’t something I did intentionally and I couldn’t do much about it, but I served my ban and made sure I was ready to come back in.”

OXFORD UNITED:
FOUR TO WATCH JORDAN
ARCHER Archer is a new face for Oxford who was brought in on a short-term deal in December 2019 to provide cover for regular keeper Simon Eastwood, who picked up a knee injury. The former Millwall goalkeeper got off to a blazing start, keeping a clean sheet against Shrewsbury on his debut. Rewarding manager Karl Robinson for putting his faith in him after spending the previous six months as a free agent following his release from the South London Championship club.
TA R I Q U E
FOSU
An addition to Oxford’s ranks this term made an instant impact on the opening day of the season as he scored on his debut against Sunderland during their 1-1 draw. His scoring form continued with him netting his first U’s hat-trick when Oxford thumped Lincoln City 6-0, and a couple of days later, scoring in the clubs remarkable 4-0 win in the Carabao Cup against Premier League side West Ham. Last season Fosu played an integral role in Charlton Athletic’s play-off success which has seen them grace the Championship this season.
JOHN
MOUSINHO The 33-year-old was appointed Oxford’s captain just three months after joining them in November 2017. The defender has plenty of EFL experience under his belt, having played for the likes of Brentford, Preston and Burton throughout his 14-yearlong professional career. His biggest success in League One came with Burton in 2015/16 when he helped guide them to a second place finish, earning the clubs first ever promotion to the Championship.
M AT T Y
TAYLOR Taylor was drafted into Robinson’s squad this summer on loan from Bristol City, a club where he struggled to find then net across 67 games. However, since his move to the Kassam Stadium he has reignited his goalscoring form. His last spell in League One before this summer was with Bristol Rovers between 2014 and 2017 which saw him score 61 goals in 118 games. His move to Oxford was welcomed by supporters after Taylor started his career in the U’s Academy ranks.

HARRY FEARNLEY
Born and raise in Penistone, Fearnley started his playing career at his local non-league side Penistone Church – who currently operate at level nine in the English pyramid. In 1963 he moved to Oxford United where he spent two seasons in goal for the U’s before Rovers came calling in 1967. He won silverware at the club, as Rovers were crowned champions of the old Fourth Division.
SHARED 5-A-SIDE
IAN ATKINS
Atkins enjoyed a pleasant playing career representing the likes of Sunderland, Everton and Ipswich and ended his career with Rovers in 1994 after spending a season as the club’s player-manager.
16
Later down the line he would end up as Oxford’s director of football in 2001 and less than one year later was appointed manager after the U’s found themselves in a battle against relegation. After keeping them up, the next season Atkins turned his team into promotion contenders. Currently he is responsible for overseeing Premier League side Aston Villa’s European recruitment.
LES ROBINSON
The defender joined Rovers from Stockport County for a fee of £10,000 in 1988 but two-years and 82 appearances later he joined Oxford. As far as the U’s were concerned, he went on to be a cult hero, becoming the club captain and playing 459 games for them over his 10-year spell. In May 2018, the Kassam Stadium hosted a testimonial match for Robinson as Oxford played a Liverpool Legends XI - Oxford won the match 1-0.
CRAIG NELTHORPE
Nelthorpe got the opportunity to play for his boyhood club when he signed for Rovers in 2004 from Frickley Athletic. He went on to spend five years at Rovers. He linked up with Oxford in the Conference on a deal which ran until the end of the season. After 16 games and two goals for the club, he left Oxford and returned up north to join York City.
LEWIS GUY
The forward was initially loaned to Rovers from Newcastle in 2005 and made such a good impression that Dave Penney signed him permanently after Newcastle released the forward. He formed an iconic striking partnership with Paul Heffernan, although Guy did not score a lot of goals his nifty footwork proved troublesome for most clubs defenders to deal with. Once he left South Yorkshire in 2010, he moved to MK Dons. During the early part of the 2011/12 season, Guy was sent on two separate one-month loans to Oxford to help add to their attacking flair up front.
IN OPPOSITION
PAST RECORD PAST PASTRECORD RECORD
Given Rovers and Oxford have a long history in the EFL, it is perhaps surprising that today is only the 20th competitive meeting between the two sides. A fairly balanced record has been skewed in favour of the visitors in recent years, with three wins and three draws since Rovers last claimed victory back in September 2003. Tim Ryan and Paul Green were on target in that 2-0 league win at Belle Vue. Oxford dropped briefly out of the league in 2006 and since their 2010 return to the EFL they remain unbeaten in five meetings - all coming in the third tier. Oxford were particularly impressive in a 3-0 victory at the Kassam Stadium earlier this season, with both of last season’s meetings finishing level at 2-2. Encouragingly for Rovers, three of the four wins over Oxford have come in South Yorkshire with a 4-2 Division Four win in the first meeting, in September 1962, and the aforementioned 2-0 success in 2003 the only times there has been a winning margin of more than one goal.

IN THE HOT SEAT:
DONCASTER ROVERS MANAGERS FROM 1920
DAVE MACKAY (1987-1989) Legend has it that Dave Mackay gained the Rovers job via a chance appearance on television. He had just completed a stint managing in Dubai when he was interviewed during a live broadcast from Derby’s Baseball Ground. Mackay said he was looking for a job back in England: Rovers chairman Bernie Boldry saw the interview and a few weeks later Mackay had replaced Dave Cusack at Belle Vue. Mackay was a football legend and as such his appointment was something of a coup for Rovers. He had been a member of the Tottenham side that won the Double in 1960-61 and had won 22 caps for Scotland. He had replaced Brian Clough as manager of Derby County in October 1973,and he had taken them to the Football League Championship in 1974-75. No Rovers manager had boasted such a CV, although after leaving Derby in 1976 Mackay had spent much of his time coaching in the Middle East, away from the English game. As his assistant, Mackay appointed his former Spurs teammate Joe Kinnear, who had been coaching in Malaysia and Dubai before moving to Belle Vue. Mackay took over a Rovers side struggling at the wrong end of Division Three. His first game was a 4-1 defeat at Southend and his team enjoyed only three wins between then and the end of the season. Rovers were relegated in bottom position, and Mackay’s response was to place all his squad on the transfer list. Those who departed included goalkeeper Andy Rhodes and striker Brian
Deane, two players around whom a team might have been built. 1988-89 saw Mackay make some useful acquisitions in striker Paul Dobson, the returning Colin Douglas and the experienced Eire international midfielder Gerry Daly. Rovers were in the top six in October and they were still in touch with the leaders at New Year. However, Dobson had asked for a transfer and was sold to Scarborough. Without him the goals dried up and Rovers slid down the table. A run of only two wins from 12 games put promotion out of the question and Mackay seemed unable to do anything to stop the rot. Certainly, his options were limited: the club was £500,000 in debt and losing £3,000 a week. So limited in fact that on 17th March 1989 Mackay resigned, claiming that he was being forced to sell the club’s young players. Although he remained to take charge of the next day’s game- a 3-1 win over Colchester- he then handed over the reins to Joe Kinnear. Kinnear’s job was to steer Rovers clear of the foot of Division Four and relegation. He managed this, but only by a whisker. Rovers won only once during his eleven games in charge and only Darlington’s failure to win their final two games kept Rovers out of the Conference. At the end of the day, boardroom politics rather than results did for Kinnear. In June 1989 Wetzel, backed by fellow businessmen Mike Collett and John Ryan, forced chairman Boldry to resign and formed a new board. Kinnear was the next casualty, sacked to make way for the returning Bremner. The Mackay era marked some dark days for Rovers. Under his stewardship the club not only dropped into Division Four but also nearly fell out of the bottom of the Football League. Although Mackay was constrained by Rovers’ desperate financial plight, he seemed unable to motivate the players at their disposal. John Coyle

THE ACADEMY
Teams from Rovers Youth Development Phase (13-16) and Foundation Phase (9-12) travelled to Manchester to face teams from the red side of the city. Rovers youngsters enjoyed another amazing learning experience when they took on teams from Manchester United’s Academy testing themselves against one of the best academies in the world in some of the best facilities. The Youth Development teams (13-16) played mixed aged Manchester United teams and were able to register some very positive performances and results. The younger age groups closely matched their opponents and played some fantastic and highly competitive games. The U10s and U11s fared particularly well with some stand out performances from some members of the Rovers teams. Head of Academy coaching Steve Welsh said: “Overall it was a fantastic experience for our young foundation players and it gave them an insight into what life at a Category One Academy looks like. “Manchester United coaches were very complimentary about the way all our players conducted themselves and we are now looking to arrange another fixture with them before the end of the current season.” Rovers U9s, U10s and U11's will make the trip to Merseyside at the end of January 2020 to face academy teams from Champions League holders Liverpool FC.

Club Doncaster Official Partner Eric Twigg Foods have donated two signed Doncaster Rovers shirts to the children’s ward at Doncaster Royal Infirmary (DRI) for the second year in a row. The well-established family run company, famous for their distribution of Pukka Pies, handed over two signed Rovers shirts to the children’s ward at Doncaster Royal Infirmary for the annual Club Doncaster festive visit before Christmas. The gesture has become a lovely tradition for Eric Twig Foods, who offered the same donation this time last year, and members of the Rovers first team were on hand to present the shirts to the children. Matthew Twigg said: "This is the second time we have donated the shirts, because I just think it’s a lovely way to give back to the community and show our support. They seemed to really enjoy the signed merchandise last year, so we were more than happy to do the same. “The Official Partnership that Club Doncaster offer is a brilliant way to get your brand out there, but we wanted to make the most out of the smaller add on items and donating

A summer restructure of the Professional Development Phase at Rovers is already paying dividends according to U23s coach Gary McSheffrey. 28
While Paul Stancliffe is continuing his great work with the U18s, McSheffrey is now overseeing the U23s squad with John Schofield taking on a role with the first-team. Now the changes have had time to bed in, McSheffrey believes he has given a boost to the players who are looking to bridge the gap between U18s and senior football. “In the summer they were perhaps a bit unsure as to where they were with the changes - that is a natural reaction, but something they have to deal with as footballers. We needed that stability the gaffer has put in place. We’re really seeing the benefits now,” he said.
D N A Q U A R T E R LY
“They are training with Darren Moore every Monday morning and they can all see there are spaces on the bench every week and that the opportunity is going to be there. “They have to step up, play adult football and show they are ready - there’s never been a better time at the club to stamp your authority on a game like this and get in the manager’s vision.” Manager Darren Moore was instrumental in putting in place the new structure for Rovers U23s and believes it’s a programme the club can be proud of. "The U23s have been given a new programme and structure that we believe will make them more competitive," he said. "At this club they can achieve as little or as much as they want it won’t be for the want of an opportunity. “When those opportunities do come, they will need to seize them with both hands and move forward with them. “We feel proud of the programme we’ve put together because the U23s are an important group - this session plan will help bring them on and get them nearer to the first team." Happy new year everyone! We’re so excited to kick 2020 off in style, and so we are pleased to welcome you back to the Keepmoat Stadium as we host Oxford United. It was a consistent first half of the season for Karl Robinson’s side, who linger just on the outskirts of the play-off spots, and they will be eager to continue their impressive form. Darren Moore’s boys are in fantastic spirits, though, and with a big calendar year ahead of them are itching to climb the table. Today we wish a very warm welcome to our match sponsor DC Training & Development Services. DC Training specialises in delivering training and development
programmes including forklift truck, health & safety and customer services. DC Training delivers training solutions locally and across the United Kingdom, making government funded
training available to a range of businesses. We hope everyone with DC Training has a fantastic time with us today in the Jibba Jabba Restaurant. There are a range of exciting commercial opportunities available at Club Doncaster, whether you want to advertise your business, become an Official Partner or just to celebrate a special occasion with your loved ones. For more information on any of the packages available, contact the team on 01302 764665 or email commercial@clubdoncaster.co.uk.

SAFETY Three points is not the only priority today. Making sure everyone goes home safe is the most important result. Over recent months we have been working closely with the police and the EFL to review security at the Keepmoat Stadium. Now we are asking you to do your bit. It is vital that everyone - players, staff and supporters - remains vigilant and reports any concerns to stewards or police. Attacks might be rare, and the chance of you being caught up in one unlikely, but the message is ACT #ActionCountersTerrorism. Rovers safety officer Sam Ramsden said:
"We want everyone to enjoy today’s game at the Keepmoat Stadium but if you see anything that causes you concern, tell a steward or staff member. Please do not worry that you might be wasting our time. "The stewards are here to help keep us all safe so please be patient and cooperate with their instructions. When it comes to security it has to be a team effort and we are all players." Here's a quick reminder of what you can do to help keep yourself and others safe: • Arrive early, allowing more time for security checks • Minimise what you carry, fewer bag searches will speed up entry to the ground
• Be vigilant at all times and if you see anything suspicious, tell a steward right away • If you see anything that could pose an immediate threat to safety, call 999 • In an emergency, listen to the public address instructions and follow them • If told to evacuate, do so immediately, do not wait around to film events on your mobile • Move right away from the stadium as quickly as possible for your safety and to allow clear access for any emergency vehicles • Once you are safe, follow the local police force on Twitter for updates To find out more, visit gov.uk/ACT or @TerrorismPolice

Happy New Year ladies and gentleman. Welcome to the Keepmoat Stadium and a very warm welcome to all the visiting fans from Oxford United. SLO SEMINAR During December I attended the annual EFL SLO seminar which is held at EFL House, in Preston. It is an opportunity for all the SLOs in the north of the country to get together, discuss our roles and share best practice. The day started with a presentation from the Independent Football Ombudsman (IFO), this was to discuss the process of raising issues and complaints with the IFO. Following on from this we had an update on match day safety and security by the EFL’s security and operations advisor, this is always an interesting
discussion as it is around how the SLO’s work with the safety teams at different clubs. The day finished with a workshop on safeguarding and looking at different reallife scenarios. Safeguarding is something that we take very seriously here at Rovers, if you ever come across any safeguarding issues please get in contact with myself, the stewards or our safeguarding officer. As always it was an enjoyable event and great to discuss many aspects of the role with my fellow SLOs. EFL NEWSLETTER Following the meeting, the latest edition of the SLO newsletter was released by the EFL and included in the newsletter was a great piece on the clubs new first time fans / away fans video guide. Many people on the day of the meeting came to chat with me about the video and all had great things to say about it. As far as I am aware, we are currently the only EFL club who has such a video
and hopefully following the meeting and the release of the newsletter it will encourage a few other clubs to produce a similar video. If you have not yet seen the video, it is available on my social media pages, the club’s first-time fan page on the official website and the club’s YouTube account. I am always looking for people opinions on the video, so if you have any feedback then please get in touch! CONTACT DETAILS As always if you have any questions or feedback then please contact me on the usual SLO social media outlets, @SLO_DRFC on twitter, DRFC SLO on Facebook or you can email me on dean.medcalf@ clubdoncaster.co.uk. I hope you all enjoy today’s game and have a safe journey home. Rovers Till I Die Dean Medcalf Supporter liaison officer
SUPPORTERS CLUB
SUPPORTERS CLUB A big warm welcome to all the supporters for today’s game, especially the Oxford fans who have travelled down the A1. We hope you have all had a fantastic Christmas. Oxford under the leadership of Karl Robinson have had a cracking start to the season, winning most of their home games and reaching the last eight of the Carabao Cup where they played Manchester City recently. A big up to the Stewards at the Kassam Stadium, under the guidance of Graham Baldwin, are among the best we have encountered on our travels. We have had some long away games recently, and credit to the fans who made the trip to Wimbledon for the second time in a month. And with the busy festive period coming up, and now we have the Sunderland away game put on to a Friday night, and the Tranmere game re arranged for Tuesday February 4. We still have Shrewsbury, Portsmouth and Bolton games to reschedule so it is going to be a busy period. Again this season we will be running coaches to all home and away games, the sheet with times and prices on are included in the programme but are subject to change. We have tried to keep the prices as low as we can but had to introduce a travel policy for under 16s who have to have a responsible adult travel with them.Fans who are 16-17-years-old need a consent form from their parents or guardiansto travel. These can be downloaded from the Supporters Club website, on the bus or at the Supporters Club office based in the Club Doncaster Academy. As always we will run the home match bus from Retford, Harworth and Rossington Styrupp and Labour club, times are 1pm (6pm) 1.20pm (6.20pm) and 1.30pm (6.30pm). Times in brackets are night games, and there is no need to book. For fans’ safety we will be picking up on the inner circle adjacent to Car Park 2 this season, so you can leave your car there. You can
join the Supporters Club on the bus and get discount straight away, or join online or at Supporters shop located in the ClubDoncaster Academy. The price is £7 adult and £5 concessions. Call Paul on 07961727769 or Len on 01302 817347 for more details and bookings. The North Branch also run coaches to most away games, from the Adwick, Carcroft, A19 corridor area. If you wish to travel with them call 07780316923. They are a great set of lads and lasses, and do a lot of raffles to support local charities. As in previous years the Supporters Club are having weekend trips away, the North Branch will be stopping in Blackpool for the Accrington game and the Retford Branch will also be stopping in Blackpool for the last game of the season at Bloomfield Road. Call Paul on 07961727769 if interested. Both trips will be £150,Inc. two nights bed, breakfast and evening meal. Not many places are left. Hopefully by the time you read this I will have delivered most of the prizes from our Christmas Draw, the full list of winners is in today’s programme and on the Rovers official website. Thanks to everyone who sold or bought tickets for the raffle. The VSC and the Supporters Club are now involved the IAG in conjunction with the South Yorkshire Police, In a supporters led initiative, to cut down on anti-social behaviour at games, how the policing of matches come about, trying to make it a more pleasurable experience going along to the games. The Rovers show on Trax FM has now moved to a Friday night spot from 6pm til 7pm, with me and Mellony Shepperd talking all things Rovers and local nonleague football, well worth a listen. From everyone at the Supporters Club, we wish you all a happy new year. Enjoy the game. And get behind the team. Rovers Till We Die Paul Mayfield
VIKING SUPPORTERS CO-OPERATIVE Football is the national game, and football supporters are the lifeblood of the game. While many privately owned football clubs are well run, ours included, there are numerous examples over the years where this model of ownership has failed the supporters of that club, and has led to a number of clubs becoming either partly or fully owned by those supporters. The Minister Of Sport set up the Expert Working Group with the intention of looking at ways to improve engagement and dialogue between clubs and fans, and therefore to improve transparency and trust. The detailed recommendations from the EWG led to the government instructing the EFL and the Premier League to enter into structured dialogue with those supporters, and especially with the supporters trust at that club. As you may be aware the club hold two Meet The Owners events each year which meet the criteria set down by the EFL. On top of that the club have a Supporters Board which meets on a regular basis during the season to discuss a very broad range of topics. Suffice to say that DRFC have not only met the requirements but have exceeded them in both frequency and content, and that is something we can once again be proud of. Martin O'Hara

Participants from both Doncaster’s and Leicester’s Football Welcomes projects battled it out in an entertaining football match at Club Doncaster Sports Park last month.
40
Club Doncaster Foundation and Leicester City in the Community teamed up with Amnesty International UK’s Football Welcomes community project to put on a football match for refugees and people seeking asylum. A total of 25 Football Welcomes participants took part, donning the shirts of Doncaster Rovers and Leicester City, before sitting together in the Keepmoat Stadium to watch Rovers take on the Foxes’ under-21’s in the Leasing. com trophy in December. The Leicestershire outfit won both games, with the refugee team triumphing 3-1 against Doncaster’s DCC United, whilst Leicester’s under-21’s grabbed a convincing 3-0 win over Rovers. This was the first time DCC United, Doncaster’s refugee football team, had played a competitive football match, and found themselves level at half time. The fairytale result was not to be, as Leicester seized control of the game to run out comfortable winners. Health and wellbeing apprentice,
Lewis O’Connor, who managed the Doncaster team, said: "All the players worked tremendously hard and proved why this project works. "We had 25 participants playing a game of football, representing their clubs and being proud whilst doing it. "Hopefully Leicester will be up for a rematch, a lot of our participants are looking forward to playing again." Football Welcomes is a nationwide programme, supported by the People’s Postcode Lottery, designed to work with local organisations, including refugee groups, local charities, amateur football teams, fans’ groups and schools to bring people together in their communities. Alongside a focus on improving physical activity in the region, the three-year scheme will also include the opportunity for participants to take English classes, undertake referee or coaching training and to join local grassroots football clubs. Naomi Westland, Football Welcomes manager at Amnesty International UK, said: “The entire match was brilliant to watch. “I was chatting to the players before they went on the pitch and they were all really excited about
taking part. Life is pretty stressful for them and this opportunity allows each player to meet new people who are in similar situations. It is great work from both clubs.” In April 2019 the Foundation joined 177 clubs in the third annual Football Welcomes weekend, when DCC United were invited to take part in a football match on the main pitch at the Keepmoat Stadium. Club Doncaster will continue to support DCC United, providing them with facilities and training kit as part of the ongoing partnership. DATE Impact Doncaster have again started recruiting for the upcoming NCS Summer programme, with already more than 150 signs ups confirmed. The NCS is a once-in-a-lifetime four-week opportunity, open to all Year 11 students across the UK. Club Doncaster Foundation’s NCS team are in the process of recruiting young people for the programme across 20 secondary schools in Doncaster.
give something back to their local community. Along with thousands of other people their age, they will spend time away from home completing outdoor challenges and building their confidence. They will work with local businesses and charities, learn about issues impacting their community and develop their interview skills through a variety of interactive workshops.
The programme prides itself on allowing young people to make a difference with their summer, whilst it is also a fantastic way to build skills and experiences needed to help young people stand out in job and university applications.
Young people will then have the opportunity to plan and run their own community project to benefit their local area. After completing NCS, a graduation ceremony will be held to recognise and celebrate young people’s achievements and present them with their certificate of accomplishment signed by the Prime Minister.
They take on new challenges and adventures, make new friends, learn new skills and
NCS is a steppingstone between secondary education and employment/further
education – it is UCAS approved and would look great on employment and university applications. More than 98% of those who took part in the programme last year would recommend it to their friends and 92% of participants said they have developed more skills for their future. NCS runs across a range of dates during the summer holidays and autumn half term. The programme sees a spend of £1,500 per head, but because its programme is governmentbacked it only costs £50, which will cover all accommodation, transport and meals (during residential phases), activities and equipment. Bursaries are available and support can be provided for young people with additional needs. For more information please visit: clubdoncasterfoundation. co.uk/ncs
