"WE CANNOT AFFORD TO GET AHEAD OF OURSELVES AND KNOW TODAY WILL BE A TOUGH TIE"
GRANT McCANN GOOD AFTERNOON AND WELCOME BACK TO THE KEEPMOAT STADIUM FOR THE VISIT OF OLDHAM ATHLETIC IN THE FOURTH ROUND OF THE EMIRATES FA CUP. I’D LIKE TO WELCOME THE SUPPORTERS, PLAYERS AND STAFF OF THE VISITORS WHO HAVE MADE THE TRIP ACROSS THE M62 TODAY. The FA Cup is a fantastic competition and today’s match provides a fantastic opportunity for both sides to write their names into the history books. Rovers have not reached the fifth round since 1956, when more than 30,000 people were at Belle Vue to watch us take on Tottenham Hotspur. Both sides are dreaming of a similar tie in the next round, but we cannot afford to get ahead of ourselves and know today will be a tough tie. The beauty of the FA Cup is how hard you have to work to get through rounds, and we know which division you are in counts for little at times - as we saw at Chorley, then again at Preston in the previous round. I am told we are expecting a large crowd here today, your support all season has been magnificent and this is just the latest example. Please get behind the lads today and help make it a real cup atmosphere - it could just be what gives us the edge.
people taking a real interest in all levels of the club. Those who were here saw an entertaining game where we could count ourselves very unlucky to have to settle for a point in a 3-3 draw. There will be real benefits to the younger players who tested themselves against a Premier League U23 side, which is the best bit of the night. We also confirmed a new contract with Joe Wright this week, which is fantastic news for him and the club. Joe has been brilliant for us this season and deserves his new deal, it has been frustrating for him with his injury but we’re hopeful he can return very soon - leaving us with a group of talented centre-backs battling for a place in the team. Enjoy the game.
We had a good number of fans down here on Monday night as our Development side took on Everton’s U23 side in the Premier League Cup, and it is great to see

ISSUE 18 v OLDHAM ATHLETIC
F F I L C E N R BY CLIFF BYRNE WAS RE-UNITED WITH FORMER TEAMMATE GRANT MCCANN WHEN HE WAS APPOINTED AS ROVERS ASSISTANT MANAGER LAST SUMMER. Since the pair arrived, they have brought out the best in the Rovers squad and turned them into play-off contenders in Sky Bet League One. “I’ve been enjoying it, it’s been a good six months or so and I’m really enjoying working hard with the boys every day,” he says. “It always helps when the staff around the football club are so enthusiastic to do well, that makes it easy to settle in. “It’s been good working with Grant again, we’re challenging each other and challenging the group to be better each day. “It’s a working progress as everything is, we’re always learning and looking for ways to tweak things to enhance what we’re doing. “The manager has brought me into the role because he sees characteristics in me that he wants to work alongside.”

After a 15th placed finish last season, there was a lot of work done during pre-season to ensure the squad were ready to go for their second campaign back in the third tier. That work is now paying off, and Byrne says that is a result of ensuring the belief is high within the dressing room. “We’ve got different demands and expectations on the players this year, and they’ve taken to that and stepped up to the challenges,” he says. “The gaffer has sprinkled a couple of loan players into the squad, but the biggest thing has been making sure they have that belief. “The biggest thing we can do is make the right additions to compliment what we have here, and make sure the squad is fresh. “The players have shown the belief throughout the season, we give them that freedom and then once they cross that white line the onus is on them. “Individually they’ve been doing it, and then as a team the performances and results are coming off the back of it.” The team spirit within the group is there for all to see, with a good blend of youth and experience throughout the squad. While every player wants to do well personally, Byrne says there is a genuine determination to win games for the success of the team. “Everyone here understands that people working
08
ISSUE 18 v OLDHAM ATHLETIC
together is going to bring more success than individuals doing things themselves,” he says. “It’s important that you’re doing the best you can for yourself, but also that you’re giving everything for the football club. “We don’t tend to look too much into where we are at the moment, the focus for us is winning games and making sure our performances are good. “We’ve got a lot of belief in the group and a very hard working group at that which I think the fans can see in every game we play.” This afternoon’s Emirates FA Cup fourth round tie against Oldham Athletic represents an opportunity to reach the fifth round of the competition for the first time since.
"SOME MANAGERS SEND OUT FULL STRENGTH TEAMS AND OTHERS DON’T, BUT I’VE EXPERIENCED GAMES WHERE YOU CAN LIVE THAT DREAM"
They reached this stage after an impressive win against Sky Bet Championship side Preston North End earlier this month, a result which Byrne says is a sign of how far the side can go. “The FA Cup is something else we can work towards, it’s a game we want to win which is the same as any club,” he says. “It’s thrown up one of my old clubs in Oldham so we’ll all be looking forward to the game when it comes around. “We’ve faced different challenges throughout the season and the Preston game was one of those, but we stood up to it. “We conceded a goal early in the second-half but didn’t let that affect us, we dusted ourselves down and showed good character to get the win. “We’ll have players at this football club who believe they can play at that level and they displayed on the day that they can, but the trick is to find that consistency. We’re raising the standards here day in, day out and we want the players to push themselves as much as possible.” Despite Rovers going into the game as favourites due to league standings, Byrne believes they have to approach the game in the right way in order to progress. “People will see us as favourites for the tie but we know how tough Oldham will be, but we were underdogs in the last round and got the result,” he says.
"WE’VE GOT A LOT OF BELIEF IN THE GROUP AND A VERY HARD WORKING GROUP AT THAT WHICH I THINK THE FANS CAN SEE IN EVERY GAME WE PLAY" “They’ve had a good bounce effect since they changed the manager, Peter Wild has gone in and is a local guy who is working wonders there. “With the drama of the FA Cup, whether you’ve got a glamour tie or one you see as winnable the most important thing is to win the game. “It will benefit the club in terms of financially and just the profile of the club in general being in the fourth round. “We’ve had some of our games moved to a Sunday where people can watch us play, which helps to push the brand of Club Doncaster and reap the benefits.” The 36-year-old was part of an FA Cup giant killing with Oldham in 2013, when they knocked Premier League side Liverpool out at the fourth round stage. “It was fantastic to be a part of, that is a game where nobody gives you a chance and it goes to show the magic of the cup will always be there,” adds Byrne. “Some managers send out full strength teams and others don’t, but I’ve experienced games where you can live that dream. “Nobody would have given Oldham a chance of beating Liverpool at the time with the group of players on show, and the position we were in at the time. “Every cup game is exciting for one reason or another, so it’s important that we approach the game as we would any other. “It’s something that any player can put on their CV when they’ve progressed further in the competition because not many people get the chance so that is a big motivation.”

FOUR TO OLDHAM ATHLETIC
DANIEL IVERSEN TOP STOPPER
01
The Danish goalkeeper is currently on a season-long loan from Premier League side Leicester City, and he has gone on to establish himself between the sticks at Boundary Park. The Latics number one has represented his county at every youth level from under-16 level through to the under-21 side, though he is yet to pull on a shirt in the senior set-up, currently sitting behind his parent club teammate Kasper Schmeichel. Iversen made his professional debut on the opening day of this season against Milton Keynes, and he has played in every round of the Emirates FA Cup so far for the Latics.
GEVARO NEPOMUCENO MIDFIELD MAESTRO
27
Another international amongst the Latics’ ranks, the winger has represented his home country Curacao 36 times, scoring eight goals. Nepomuceno signed a one-year deal at Boundary Park in September 2017, with the option of a further year, following his departure from Portuguese top-flight side Maritimo. Nepomuceno began his professional career in the Netherlands, making his debut for FC Den Bosch in 2011, before signing for fellow Dutch side Fortuna Sittard a year later. He enjoyed a season playing in Romania with Petrolul Ploiesti, before his move to Portugal. Nepomuceno made his Latics debut against Fleetwood Town and scored his first goal for the club in a 5-1 victory at home to Northampton Town in December 2017 in League One.
12
ISSUE 18 v OLDHAM ATHLETIC
O WATCH PETER CLARKE DEFENSIVE ROCK
26
The central defender is a very experienced head across the Latics’ back-line, with the captain edging ever closer to his 700th senior appearance. Clarke began his career coming through the youth ranks at Everton, playing eight times for the England under-21 side during his time at Goodison Park too. More recently, Clarke is probably more well-known for his time playing in leagues across the EFL, with two spells at Blackpool sandwiching time with Southend United and Huddersfield Town, helping the latter to promotion from League One in 2012. Clarke joined the Latics in July 2016 on an initial one-year deal, going on to win the club’s Player of the Season at the end of his first year at Boundary Park.
CALLUM LANG DEADLY STRIKER
19
The man on loan from current League One champions Wigan Athletic is the reason the Latics are into the fourth round of the Emirates FA Cup, having scored the winner against Premier League side Fulham at Craven Cottage in round three. His header two minutes from time completed a remarkable turnaround for the Latics who were 1-0 down with 15 minutes left to play. Lang made his temporary switch to Boundary Park back in the summer, recently extending his loan to run until the end of the season. He spent last season in League Two with Morecambe, scoring 10 goals in 30 appearances as he helped the Shrimps to survive relegation on the final day of the season.

HAVEN’T WE MET SOMEWHERE BEFORE?
DONCASTER ROVERS AND OLDHAM ATHLETIC IN THE FA CUP
Doncaster Rovers and Oldham Athletic have met 45 times in total, six of these coming in the FA Cup. Unusually, five of those meetings have come in the last 12 years. This is the story of those six encounters, two of which have been won by Rovers and three by today’s opponents. Oldham and Rovers for the first time in the FA Cup in the second round in 1946-47. On December 14 1946 the Third Division North leaders Rovers travelled to Boundary Park to face their mid-table opponents. On a heavy pitch, Oldham took the lead after 44 minutes via a header from Jack Bowden. Rovers levelled on the hour when Bob McFarlane’s low shot was turned in by Clarrie Jordan. With eight minutes left, Rovers went in front. Les Owens crossed from the right and Ralph Maddison headed home. Even then, the drama was not over. Frank Tomlinson was fouled in the Rovers’ box and a penalty was awarded, but Bill Waite shot wide from the spot. Rovers then had the ball in the net, but Owens’ effort was ruled out for offside. A breathless Cup tie ended in a 2-1 win for Rovers, who eventually lost to Portsmouth in Round Three but went on to seal the Division Three (North) title.
14
ISSUE 18 v OLDHAM ATHLETIC
That was that as far as the FA Cup was concerned until the 2007-08 season, when the teams were drawn against each other in the First Round. Oldham took the lead through Neal Trotman’s header and soon after half time they were 2-0 up thanks to a splendid strike from Craig Davies. James Hayter pulled one back after 63 minutes and then four minutes from time he netted again from a cross by Richie Wellens. The replay saw Rovers take the lead through Mark McCammon, but Neil Kilkenny equalised just before half time and soon afterwards Gary McDonald capitalised on a defensive error to put the visitors 2-1 up. That was how it ended, but it wasnot the end of the saga, not by any means. In December 2012 the teams were paired together again, this time in the second round at Boundary Park. Rovers, who had beaten Oldham in the League a week before, went ahead through Robbie Blake after four minutes but they were pegged back by Reece Wabara’s equaliser on the stroke of half time. Matt Derbyshire then put the hosts ahead after 70 minutes and settled the tie seven minutes later. Rovers, though, had the last laugh, going on to win the League One title on a dramatic final day in April 2013.
Two years later the teams met again in another second round tie at Boundary Park. Rovers were managed by former Oldham boss Paul Dickov and he emerged the victor as the visitors won 1-0. With four minutes left Enda Stevens’ cross was punched away by Oldham goalkeeper Paddy Kenny only for the ball to strike defender George Elokobi and cannon into the net. Rovers were knocked out in the next round by Bristol City after a replay. The final FA Cup meeting of the sides before today’s game came in November 2016. Rovers were in League Two under Darren Ferguson’s management while Oldham were struggling near the foot of League One. Ferguson showed where his priorities lay by making eight changes from the previous League game and Rovers were distinctly second best. They fell behind when Ryan Flynn scored on the stroke of half time and went further behind through Billy McKay after 53 minutes, Liam Mandeville’s stoppage time penalty was no more than a consolation for Rovers who went away to concentrate on earning promotion, which they subsequently achieved. So today’s game will be the sixth meeting in the FA Cup in the space of 12 years. Will Oldham maintain their 100% FA Cup record at the Keepmoat Stadium or will Rovers summon up the spirit of 1946 and 2014 and level the series at three-all? It should make for an intriguing game with a place in round five at stake. JOHN COYLE

SAFETY Three points is not the only priority today. Making sure everyone goes home safe is the most important result. Over recent months we have been working closely with the police and the EFL to review security at the Keepmoat Stadium. Now we are asking you to do your bit. It is vital that everyone - players, staff and supporters - remains vigilant and reports any concerns to stewards or police. Attacks might be rare, and the chance of you being caught up in one unlikely, but the message is ACT #ActionCountersTerrorism. Rovers safety officer Sam Ramsden said:
AD-105x148-Football Foundation.indd 1
"We want everyone to enjoy today’s game at the Keepmoat Stadium but if you see anything that causes you concern, tell a steward or staff member. Please do not worry that you might be wasting our time. "The stewards are here to help keep us all safe so please be patient and cooperate with their instructions. When it comes to security it has to be a team effort and we are all players." Here's a quick reminder of what you can do to help keep yourself and others safe: • Arrive early, allowing more time for security checks • Minimise what you carry, fewer bag searches will speed up entry to the ground
• Be vigilant at all times and if you see anything suspicious, tell a steward right away • If you see anything that could pose an immediate threat to safety, call 999 • In an emergency, listen to the public address instructions and follow them • If told to evacuate, do so immediately, do not wait around to film events on your mobile • Move right away from the stadium as quickly as possible for your safety and to allow clear access for any emergency vehicles • Once you are safe, follow the local police force on Twitter for updates To find out more, visit gov.uk/ACT or @TerrorismPolice

SUPPORTER LIAISON OFFICER DEAN MEDCALF GOOD AFTERNOON LADIES AND GENTLEMEN AND A WARM WELCOME TO THE KEEPMOAT STADIUM TO ALL THE VISITING FANS FROM OLDHAM ATHLETIC FOR OUR TRADITIONAL FA CUP MEETING.
I would like to thank all the fans who travelled to our away games over the Christmas and New Year period. The turnouts at Gillingham, Fleetwood and Preston were fantastic and, as always, your support was magnificent. The club this year prepares to celebrate its 140th anniversary. There are many events planned to celebrate this milestone over the coming months and the club will be announcing these in the very near future. I would like to invite the Rovers fans to get involved and give your ideas on ways in which the club could celebrate this event. If you have any ideas or suggestions then please get in touch, my contact details can be seen below and are also available on the official website.

ISSUE 18 v OLDHAM ATHLETIC
The fan park will again return today, but this time will be taking place in the much warmer Belle Vue Bar, this was also the home of the last fan park which took place for the Oxford game. I am also looking for feedback on the fan park and what your opinions are on the events taking place inside the Belle Vue Bar. The Fan Park will again take place in its original location towards the end of the season. If you have any ideas on how the Fans Parks could be improved, again please get in touch. As many of you who follow me on social media may already know, before each away game I produce an away guide to pass on information to the Rovers fans that are travelling to our next away game. The club and I
are looking at new ways in which these guides could be improved and also how to make them more accessible to fans. For instance, these will hopefully soon be available to fans via the clubs official website. So if you have any suggestions or feedback on the Away Guides then please contact me or the club. As always I hope you all enjoy today’s game, if you have any questions then please contact me on the usual SLO social media accounts, @SLO_DRFC on twitter, DRFC SLO on Facebook or you can email me at dean.medcalf@ clubdoncaster.co.uk. Unfortunately after an incident at the recent Bristol Rovers away game, which spoilt the win and marred the day, the culprit, is now serving a ban from the club, and hope teaches him a lesson, we are a family club. We are hoping to get a programme fair organised, so watch out for more details. Hope you enjoy the game. Rovers Till We Die Paul Mayfield
VIKING SUPPORTERS CO-OPERATIVE Football is the national game, and football supporters are the lifeblood of the game. While many privately owned football clubs are well run, ours included, there are numerous examples over the years where this model of ownership has failed the supporters of that club, and has led to a number of clubs becoming either partly or fully owned by those supporters. The Minister Of Sport set up the Expert Working Group with the intention of looking at ways to improve engagement and dialogue between clubs and fans, and therefore to improve transparency and trust. The detailed recommendations from the EWG led to the government instructing the EFL and the Premier League to enter into structured dialogue with those supporters, and especially with the supporters trust at that club. As you may be aware the club hold two Meet The Owners events each year which meet the criteria set down by the EFL. On top of that the club have a Supporters Board which meets on a regular basis during the season to discuss a very broad range of topics. Suffice to say that DRFC have not only met the requirements but have exceeded them in both frequency and content, and that is something we can once again be proud of. Martin O'Hara

FOUNDATION UPDATE
NCS graduates and ambassadors from this summer’s programme have put together a mini NCS programme, which will run when Rovers face Peterborough at the Keepmoat Stadium on February 9. The graduates have, as one of their projects for the year, come up with the idea to showcase to Rovers fans and the young people who attend what NCS is all about. They have decided to do this via a mini NCS experience of the three main waves during the summer: adventure, discovery and action. Graduates will be on hand to speak about their experiences on the programme and have coordinated all the activities on the matchday, which will take place around the East Stand. The NCS team will also be leading the graduates and ambassadors on a half time parade around the pitch.

ISSUE 18 v OLDHAM ATHLETIC
EVERYONE KNOWS THEIR CLUB COLOURS... DON’T THEY? NORMAL VISION
Approximately one in 12 men inherit colour blindness. It’s carried on the X-chromosome, so only one in 200 women inherit the condition. It can be a real issue in football, whether you’re watching, playing, managing or officiating. Imagine not being able to tell the difference between kit colours, and how that would affect your enjoyment of watching the game – either live or on TV. There are three types of colour blindness – and myriad colour combinations which cause problems. The common perception that colour-blind people only confuse reds and greens is a myth.
COLOUR-BLIND SIMULATION (PROTANOPIA)
The FA has been working closely with UEFA and specialist organisation Colour Blind Awareness to highlight the issue. The intention is to positively influence decision-makers at every level of the game and improve the experience of colour-blind people – whatever their involvement in football. This work has seen the production of a comprehensive guidance booklet. You can read and download it at TheFA.com/colourblindness And please visit the Colour Blind Awareness website: colourblindawareness.org for ways you can help maximise awareness.
Together, let’s make sure football’s future is FOR ALL.
