THE MANAGER

THE MANAGER

DARREN MOORE Good afternoon and welcome back to the Keepmoat Stadium. I would like to welcome Mark Robins as well as the supporters, players and staff of Coventry. They have been impressive this season and gave us a good game when we drew at St Andrew’s earlier in the season, so we hope to see a good game today. It was really pleasing to see our gameplan come to fruition in style at Bristol Rovers last Saturday, we put in an accomplished away performance and although we had to wait for the goals which won the match I felt we were in control throughout. It was a real team performance and the players deserve the plaudits. Results like we have seen so far in 2020 don’t come out of nowhere: everyone at the club is working hard - players and staff down at our training ground in Cantley Park as well as here at the Keepmoat Stadium. We have incredibly hard working staff who were straight back in this week looking to improve. We are not the finished article by any means, but we look to get better week in week out and will see where that takes us. It was pleasing to have Matty Blair back with us in Bristol last weekend, and for him to get some gametime was a real bonus for him. I know he’s kept himself busy while injured helping out with our media team doing commentary, but it was a real boost to have him back with us on a matchday. He got more minutes under his belt in midweek as the U23s beat Shrewsbury Town and is ready to feature for us more prominently when needed. Enjoy the game.

THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE

CHIEF EXECUTIVE

GAVIN BALDWIN Good afternoon and welcome back to the Keepmoat Stadium. I’d like to welcome the supporters, owners, players and staff who have made the trip up from Coventry today.

Three straight wins will come as no surprise to those who see the amount of work going on at Cantley Park

It is fantastic to be writing these notes on the back of three straight wins, all of which came with clean sheets. These results will come as no surprise who sees the amount of work that goes on at the training ground down at Cantley Park, with the players and staff working hard to get better every day. Although I know supporters are keen to hear updates from the club about transfers, rest assured that we have got a team of people identifying targets, speaking to clubs and agents and trying to make sure we get the right additions. Let’s be clear that the players we think are good enough

to improve us are in demand, and at this time of the year every club, player and agent is playing a cat and mouse game. As a club we have never commented on speculation and are not about to. The NCS team based here at the Keepmoat Stadium are busy with their recruitment of staff for this summer’s activities. We have a significant number of roles for people who experienced or looking to gain experience within the youth and community work setting. For more information go to clubdoncasterfoundation.co.uk. I would also like to place on

record day thanks to Zoey Shaw, who coached the Belles for the first half of this season but has moved on. She oversaw a tough 18 month period as head coach from the withdrawal of the Belles’ previous main sponsor prior to this summer’s move into Club Doncaster. We’re grateful she stayed onto settle the club into our model and wish her well in the future. Enjoy the game.

FEATURE:

MATTY BLAIR After missing the majority of the 2019/20 campaign to date with a groin injury, Matty Blair’s return has been a welcome boost to the Rovers squad in recent weeks. The midfielder made a cameo appearance in last weekend’s victory at Bristol Rovers, his first since being sidelined in September. “I’ve felt really good after a bit of time on the pitch, I’m lucky that I’m naturally quite fit so I was always confident I would come back in good condition,” he says. “I came on against Bristol Rovers and it was nice to get out there and dust off a few cobwebs in terms of being in and around it on a matchday. “Being on for the second goal was a brilliant moment not just for myself but for what it meant in the context of the game. “It basically meant it was game over, it was a great finish by Rakish and it really killed the game off and we had three points in the bag.

“That was a big part of relief and enjoyment for myself as you can’t replicate that feeling anywhere else.” Despite the injury coming early on in the campaign and under a new manager, Blair used his experience to take the setback in his stride. The focus was immediately on coming back stronger than ever, with a strong second-half of the season always the focus in his mind. “Being a bit older now I probably managed the disappointment of the injury a lot better than I would have done previously. “I didn’t let it get to me and just accepted that sometimes these things happen in football without anyone to blame. “I was given a time frame of how long I would be out for and I managed to shave a couple of weeks off that which is pleasing.

09

F E AT U R E I N T E R V I E W

“Looking at last year, Tommy Rowe was a great example as someone who was out for a long time but remained professional.

10

“He was always around the group and a great lad to have around the place as well so hopefully I can do something similar. “He had a big part to play and I feel I can do the same, I’ve ticked the first box in terms of the professionalism and now I want to back that up on the field.” One positive of not being involved during the festive period was that Blair got the chance to spend Christmas with his family – something which incredibly rare for a footballer in the modern era. Having missed that quality time in recent years, he made the most of the time around those closest to him. “For me personally away from football it’s been one of the best Christmas’s I’ve ever had, for the fact that we spent so much time together as a family,” he says. “We enjoyed the build up to Christmas and had the whole period together and that was something I was really grateful for. “I know I will get the time back anyway when I finish playing but from a personal side of it I loved it. “Our jobs as footballers is to sacrifice that time and everything else and nobody wants to be injured but it gave me a unique opportunity to spend some quality time with those closest to me.

F E AT U R E I N T E R V I E W

ATTY BLAI

“Now I’m back I want to stay in the squad for the rest of the season, it’s almost like the start of a new campaign for me. “Fingers crossed I can keep myself as fit as possible, and be a part of the next few months with us hopefully winning games.” While out of the team, Blair’s voice could regularly be heard as expert summariser on iFollow Rovers at both home and away games. He says that gave him the opportunity to experience the game from a different angle, and see areas for improvement for when he was back involved. “I’ve watched a lot from the stands and it has given me the opportunity to see how things are done from a different angle,” says Blair. “Seeing it work most of the time has been very beneficial for me in terms of understanding the role that I would have to play without actually playing it because I’ve been injured. “It has helped a lot watching the games and learning about everything to do with the team and not just the playing side of football. “I’ve said it before that even when we went through a tough period the performances were always there without the results at times. “Now what we are seeing is the results starting to flow and apart from a couple of tiny tweaks we’ve been largely the same in planning.

“If you can build a base on the back of a solid defence then you give yourself a great chance of winning games. We’ve kept a few clean sheets recently and I think that shows how well the lads in there understand their roles. “We are looking very good as a team at the moment and that is echoed by our results over the past few weeks.” Blair’s first appearance back at the Keepmoat Stadium could come against his hometown club Coventry City this weekend – a team who sit just four points above Rovers in the Sky Bet League One table. The 32-year-old is expecting an entertaining game, and believes Rovers have what it takes to close the gap on their opponents. “Coventry were one of the better teams we’ve faced this season, the lads who were involved that day were very complimentary about them,” he adds. “Having said that on the day we could have quite easily have walked away with all three points given how well we performed. “As a team now we have improved a lot since October and we fancy ourselves against anybody in the league. “It should be a really entertaining game and I’m thoroughly looking forward to it for plenty of different reasons.”

FOUR TO WATCH MARKO

MAROSI The Slovakian-born goalkeeper was given his first chance as a professional with Wigan Athletic after joining them on trial from Barnoldswick Town. After a year’s service and no opportunities between the sticks with the Latics it instigated a move to Rovers providing competition for loan goalkeeper Jed Steer. Last summer the 6ft 4in keeper moved to League One rivals Coventry City on a free transfer and has taken the No.1 spot following Lee Burge’s transfer to Sunderland.

LIAM

KELLY Before joining the Sky Blues Kelly played in the Premier League, Championship and League One but dropped to League Two in 2017/18 to help guide Coventry to promotion in his first season. The 29-year-old was appointed captain of the club in February 2019 after the departure of his midfield partner Michael Doyle who headed to then League Two strugglers Notts County. Kelly has represented Scotland at U18 and U21 level and has also made one senior appearance for country in 2012 when he replaced Charlie Mulgrew during a 2-1 win over Luxembourg.

KYLE

McFADZEAN An experienced centre-back who was born in South Yorkshire and came up through Sheffield United’s Academy before his release in 2007. His longest run of senior appearances came at Crawley Town as he starred in their defence for four years, racking up 133 games for the Sussex club. After spending time at MK Dons he signed for Nigel Clough’s Burton in their maiden season in the Championship. He spent the following season with the Brewers back in the third division but left last summer to join Mark Robins’ side.

M AT T

GODDEN Godden’s career started at Scunthorpe United and was loaned out eight times in his five years as a pro with the Iron. To pursue regular first-team football he joined Ebbsfleet in 2014, but swiftly returned to the Football League with Stevenage twoyears later scoring 43 goals at the Lamex Stadium over two seasons. His inspiring form in front of goal led to a move to League One for the first time in his career, joining Peterborough for an undisclosed fee in 2018. He had an amicable goal return in his maiden season scoring 14 league goals from 37 games. Godden moved to Coventry where he remains their top goal scorer for the current campaign and is one goal away from entering double figures.

15

IN OPPOSITION

MARKO MAROSI

GOALKEEPER Marosi clinched the No.1 spot during Rovers’ 2016/17 League Two promotion campaign when he replaced Ross Etheridge in goal at the start of the season. Last season the Slovakiaborn player guided Rovers to a sixth place finish and featured in the two-legged play-off final games against Charlton which Rovers narrowly lost in a pulsating tie.

ELLIOTT WARD

16

DEFENDER The former West Ham United youth product had his big break through in the Football League at Coventry City where he became a regular figure in their back line in the Championship. During his fourth season at the club opportunities came few and far between which led to him joining Rovers on a one-month emergency loan in February 2010. On his debut he scored an over-head kick in a South Yorkshire derby against Sheffield Wednesday. Once his loan at Rovers expired he joined Championship rivals Preston. At the age of 34, he is currently at Cambridge United,

GERRY DALY

MIDFIELDER The former Manchester United midfielder joined Coventry in 1980 where he remained for four-years, appearing 84 times. Towards the end of his time with the Sky Blues he was loaned out to Leicester City. He later left permanently for Birmingham. He featured for Rovers towards the end of his career, playing for one season at Belle Vue, featuring 39 times and scoring four goals.

SHARED 5-A-SIDE ROBERT BETTS

MIDFIELDER He made his debut for Rovers at the age of 16 during the 1997/98 season in a team which largely consisted of youth team players. Throughout the season he made a further two appearances which was enough to catch the eye of Premier League side Coventry. Opportunities in the Premier League were sparse for him but their relegation in 2001 provided more chances more chances. Towards the end of his time in the Midlands, loan spells at Plymouth and Lincoln City followed, but after his release from Coventry he dropped down to non-league before eventually ending his playing career in 2008 at Quorn at the age of 26.

GARY MCSHEFFREY

FORWARD McSheffrey started his career at his hometown club when he came through their Academy and made his first-team appearance for them in 1998 and went on to make 143 appearances for the club over eight years. A move to Birmingham followed where he a bagged a hat-trick on his debut against Preston.

During the 2015/16 when Rovers were struggling in League One, Darren Ferguson drafted him into the squad to help fight relegation on loan from Scunthorpe. Despite getting off to a goal-scoring start he failed to keep the club up. He joined on a permanent basis from the Iron that summer, helping Rovers instantly bounce back. In 2018 he returned to Rovers coaching in the U18 and U23 set-up.

PAST RECORD PAST PASTRECORD RECORD

Rovers’ meeting with Coventry today is unlikely to be as dramatic as the first time the Sky Blues came up to Doncaster - with the home side running out 8-1 victors on January 23 1926. That result was suitable revenge for Rovers, who had been beaten 4-0 in the reverse fixture earlier in the season - the first meeting between the two sides. Results since then have been much more sedate, with an overall record which has been very evenly balanced. Rovers hold the edge with 10 wins compared to nine for Coventry, with eight matches finishing level. This includes the meeting earlier this season, where Ben Whiteman fired Rovers ahead at St Andrew’s but Amadou Bakayoko's late leveller ensured a share of the spoils. Recent meetings have favoured Rovers, with Kieran Sadlier and John Marquis sealing a 2-0 win in this fixture last season. Coventry have not won any of the past seven meetings.

ROVERS MANAGERS

IN THE HOT SEAT:

DONCASTER ROVERS MANAGERS FROM 1920

SAMMY CHUNG (1994-1996) Steve Beaglehole’s successor was Ian Atkins, a former Everton player who had managerial experience with Colchester United and Cambridge United. Atkins steered Rovers to midtable safety. However, after the end of the season Atkins fell foul of self-styled “Football Consultant” Ken Richardson and was dismissed. Richardson claimed it was because Atkins refused to move home from his base in the Midlands, but subsequently it emerged that the source of the disagreement was Atkins’ choice of assistant manager. The man Richardson had earmarked for the role of Atkins’ No.2 was now appointed to the managerial vacancy,62-year-old Sammy Chung. Chung, christened Cyril by his Chinese father and English mother, had played professionally for Reading, Norwich City and Watford before moving into coaching. After working at Ipswich Town and Wolves he became manager at Molineux in 1976. He lasted there just over two years before going on to coach abroad. Later he was assistant manager at Stoke City and Colchester and manager of non-League Tamworth. The veteran coach used his knowledge of the non-League scene to acquire midfielders Gary Brabin from Runcorn and Sean Parrish (Telford United). The new look team began 1994-95 well, winning its first three League games and not conceding a goal until the seventh match. Rovers kept in the top three of Division Three throughout the autumn. Even a dismal run over Christmas and New Year did not cause Rovers to lose touch with the leaders, but the Belle Vue scene in early 1995 was dominated by off-field issues. Ken

Richardson threatened to take the club out of the Football League if Doncaster Council would not agree to build a new stadium. The threat was taken down to the wire as the deadline of 31st March 1995 passed and no resignation letter was received at Football League headquarters. Many felt that the quiet diplomacy of Chung had persuaded Richardson not to take such a drastic step. Having finished 9th in his debut season, Chung brought in some fresh faces, including the Torquay United pair, striker Duane Darby and defender Darren Moore. Again, Rovers made a decent start, but they soon fell away and a brief flirtation with 4th place in January was as good as it got: they ended up in 13th position. The summer of 1995 had been notable for a serious fire in the Main Stand, which had only avoidedtotal destruction through the prompt actions of the fire brigade. Arson was suspected and in March 1996 Richardson was arrested following an evening game. Chung prepared the squad for the start of the 1996-97 and on 17th August 1996 he turned up at Belle Vue to take charge of the team for the opening game of the season with Carlisle United. On his arrival, Richardson told Chung that his services were no longer required, and that Kerry Dixon was the new manager. Chung had known that Dixon was coming, as a player only. Dixon had been told that the manager’s job was vacant and would be his. So, a popular and respected manager was removed in the shabbiest possible circumstances. Sammy Chung had always given Richardson staunch support in public and he had even praised the “football consultant” for his knowledge of the game. Chung’s reward was summary dismissal followed by a long battle to gain a fraction of the compensation he was owed. It was a sorry episode in the history of Doncaster Rovers. John Coyle

Niall Ennis says he is looking to add more goals to his tally. Ennis returned to scoring ways with the opener in last Tuesday’s 2-0 win over Shrewsbury Town, and the man on loan from Wolves is looking to keep his shooting boots firmly on in Sky Bet League One.

“I’m feeling a lot better, it’s good to be back playing, and it’s really enjoyable, it’s a long season and I had to make sure that when I came back I felt right, there’s a lot of different games that I will face,” he added.

“I’m here to score goals and I haven’t been happy with my ratio, I want to get a run going and hopefully it can start now, it doesn’t matter where it is, scoring goals is a great feeling and it’s good to do it in a professional game,” he said.

“It’s all about learning and how I figure out where to position myself, whether that’s playing against a two or a three in the middle of defence,

“Scoring goals is my job and I enjoy doing it, I just have to keep doing what I’m doing, the team has picked up their results and it’s about me contributing by adding some goals and assists along the way. “We want to keep this run going and hopefully we can do that, I want to try and be a big influence on the team, obviously I want to score, but if I’m setting up a goal too then that can be a help, but I want to get more goals on the board.” Injury has seen game time limited for Ennis over recent weeks, but after five consecutive starts in the league, the forward says it is good to be back involved and learning more about the professional game.

I just want to do my best in order to get the beating of the opposition. “It’s only been half a season that I’ve been here but I feel like I’ve learnt a lot already, there’s things I’ve done which I’ve never done before, I just can’t wait to keep improving, it’s just about being confident in my ability and helping the team further.”

Chief executive Russ Green says progress is being made to strengthen the squad further as the Belles look to make improvements in 2020. Green said: "Everyone at the club is working around the clock to make sure we get the right players in for the Belles and enhance the committed squad we already have in place. "We've had a tough first half of the season and we are now working hard with positive steps being made into the recruitment of skilful, dedicated players who can take us forward, not only for the remainder of this season but the future as well. “We also have some great young players coming through the RTC who will be looking to make the step up to the first team, and are more than capable of doing so too. "We're looking forward to a brighter

2020 and building the foundations of a strong squad." Zoey Shaw has left the club, with Green and the Belles board starting the process of recruiting a new head coach. She said: "This was not an easy decision for me to make, however I've given my absolute all over the past four years and it's time for me to take a new challenge. "I've never been in this for me, I'm in it for the players, and his current team are no exception - they have the belief and determination to succeed. Thank you to the Belles family that come week in week out, you are amazing."

Good afternoon and welcome back to the Keepmoat Stadium, as we welcome Coventry City. Darren Moore’s men are absolutely flying at the moment, with another great win on the road last Saturday at Bristol Rovers. We are now looking very much up the table, with games in hand on the teams around us. Today, we are delighted to welcome our match sponsors, Acorn Timber. They offer a personalised design, manufacture and supply service, ensuring each project is managed efficiently and on budget. Acorn Timber Engineering specialise in the design, manufacture and supply of timber engineered roof and flooring projects. We hope they have a fantastic time with us here in the Jibba Jabba restaurant and legends lounge. Also joining us are Full Circle Packaging, who are here today as our matchball sponsors. Full Circle Packaging can trace its origins to a backyard packaging business in Mexborough, sourcing, sorting and

selling-on cardboard from a local dairy. Today, Full Circle Packaging is a well-established provider of metal and plastic drums, bulk bags, pallets and cardboard – along with waste management services – to a wide variety of industries. Finally, a big welcome to RESG Bus and Coach Ltd, who are today’s associate match sponsor. RESG Bus & Coach Ltd are a mobile auto

electrical diagnostic service who specialise in PSV vehicles. They come to you and diagnose and repair any electrical fault and travel UK wide. We hope all of our sponsors have a great time with us today. You too can become a match sponsor in 2020, contact the commercial team on commercial@clubdoncaster. co.uk / 01302 764665.

SAFETY Three points is not the only priority today. Making sure everyone goes home safe is the most important result. Over recent months we have been working closely with the police and the EFL to review security at the Keepmoat Stadium. Now we are asking you to do your bit. It is vital that everyone - players, staff and supporters - remains vigilant and reports any concerns to stewards or police. Attacks might be rare, and the chance of you being caught up in one unlikely, but the message is ACT #ActionCountersTerrorism. Rovers safety officer Sam Ramsden said:

"We want everyone to enjoy today’s game at the Keepmoat Stadium but if you see anything that causes you concern, tell a steward or staff member. Please do not worry that you might be wasting our time. "The stewards are here to help keep us all safe so please be patient and cooperate with their instructions. When it comes to security it has to be a team effort and we are all players." Here's a quick reminder of what you can do to help keep yourself and others safe: • Arrive early, allowing more time for security checks • Minimise what you carry, fewer bag searches will speed up entry to the ground

• Be vigilant at all times and if you see anything suspicious, tell a steward right away • If you see anything that could pose an immediate threat to safety, call 999 • In an emergency, listen to the public address instructions and follow them • If told to evacuate, do so immediately, do not wait around to film events on your mobile • Move right away from the stadium as quickly as possible for your safety and to allow clear access for any emergency vehicles • Once you are safe, follow the local police force on Twitter for updates To find out more, visit gov.uk/ACT or @TerrorismPolice

Happy New Year ladies and gentleman. Welcome to the Keepmoat Stadium and a very warm welcome to all the visiting fans from Coventry City. SLO SEMINAR During December I attended the annual EFL SLO seminar which is held at EFL House, in Preston. It is an opportunity for all the SLOs in the north of the country to get together, discuss our roles and share best practice. The day started with a presentation from the Independent Football Ombudsman (IFO), this was to discuss the process of raising issues and complaints with the IFO. Following on from this we had an update on match day safety and security by the EFL’s security and operations advisor, this is always an interesting

discussion as it is around how the SLO’s work with the safety teams at different clubs. The day finished with a workshop on safeguarding and looking at different reallife scenarios. Safeguarding is something that we take very seriously here at Rovers, if you ever come across any safeguarding issues please get in contact with myself, the stewards or our safeguarding officer. As always it was an enjoyable event and great to discuss many aspects of the role with my fellow SLOs. EFL NEWSLETTER Following the meeting, the latest edition of the SLO newsletter was released by the EFL and included in the newsletter was a great piece on the clubs new first time fans / away fans video guide. Many people on the day of the meeting came to chat with me about the video and all had great things to say about it. As far as I am aware, we are currently the only EFL club who has such a video

and hopefully following the meeting and the release of the newsletter it will encourage a few other clubs to produce a similar video. If you have not yet seen the video, it is available on my social media pages, the club’s first-time fan page on the official website and the club’s YouTube account. I am always looking for people opinions on the video, so if you have any feedback then please get in touch! CONTACT DETAILS As always if you have any questions or feedback then please contact me on the usual SLO social media outlets, @SLO_DRFC on twitter, DRFC SLO on Facebook or you can email me on dean.medcalf@ clubdoncaster.co.uk. I hope you all enjoy today’s game and have a safe journey home. Rovers Till I Die Dean Medcalf Supporter liaison officer

SUPPORTERS CLUB

SUPPORTERS CLUB A big warm welcome to all the supporters for tonight’s game. Especially we would like to welcome to all the Coventry City supporters who have made the trip up to the Keepmoat Stadium, I hope they enjoy their day out with us, and like the experience besides the result. Again this season we will be running coaches to all home and away games, the sheet with times and prices on are included in the programme but are subject to change. We have tried to keep the prices as low as we can but had to introduce a travel policy for under 16s who have to have a responsible adult travel with them. Fans who are 16-17-years-old need a consent form from their parents or guardians to travel. These can be downloaded from the Supporters Club website, on the bus or at the Supporters Club office based in the Club Doncaster Academy. As always we will run the home match bus from Retford, Harworth and Rossington Styrupp and Labour club, times are 1pm (6pm) 1.20pm (6.20pm) and 1.30pm(6.30pm). Times in brackets are night games, and there is no need to book. For fans’ safety we will be picking up on the inner circle adjacent to Car Park 2 this season, so you can leave your car there. You can join the Supporters Club on the bus and get discount straight away, or join online or at the

supporters shop located in the Club Doncaster Academy. The price is £7 adult and £5 concessions. Call Paul on 07961727769 or Len on 01302 817347 for more details and bookings. The North Branch also run coaches to most away games, from the Adwick, Carcroft, A19 corridor area. If you wish to travel with them call 07780316923. They are a great set of lads and lasses, and do a lot of raffles to support local charities. As in previous years the Supporters Club are having weekend trips away, the North Branch will be stopping in Blackpool for the Accrington game and the Retford Branch will also be stopping in Blackpool for the last game of the season at Bloomfield Road. Call Paul on 07961727769 if interested. Both trips will be £150, including two nights' bed, breakfast and evening meal. Not many places are left. Hopefully by the time you read this I will have delivered most of the prizes from our Christmas Draw, the full list of winners is in tonight's programme and on the Rovers official website. Thanks to everyone who sold or bought tickets for the raffle. The VSC and the Supporters Club are now involved the IAG in conjunction with the South Yorkshire Police, In a supporters-led initiative, to cut down on anti-social behaviour at games, how the policing of matches come about, trying to make it a more pleasurable experience going along to the games.

VIKING SUPPORTERS CO-OPERATIVE Football is the national game, and football supporters are the lifeblood of the game. While many privately owned football clubs are well run, ours included, there are numerous examples over the years where this model of ownership has failed the supporters of that club, and has led to a number of clubs becoming either partly or fully owned by those supporters. The Minister Of Sport set up the Expert Working Group with the intention of looking at ways to improve engagement and dialogue between clubs and fans, and therefore to improve transparency and trust. The detailed recommendations from the EWG led to the government instructing the EFL and the Premier League to enter into structured dialogue with those supporters, and especially with the supporters trust at that club. As you may be aware the club hold two Meet The Owners events each year which meet the criteria set down by the EFL. On top of that the club have a Supporters Board which meets on a regular basis during the season to discuss a very broad range of topics.

The Rovers show on Trax FM has now moved to a Friday night spot from 6pm til 7pm, with me and Mellony Sheperd talking all things Rovers and local non-league football, well worth a listen.

Suffice to say that DRFC have not only met the requirements but have exceeded them in both frequency and content, and that is something we can once again be proud of.

FOUNDATION UPDATE

41

The Fit Rovers sessions run by Club Doncaster Foundation have been relaunched after working with the EFL Trust, Doncaster Council and Doncaster NHS CCG to deliver an inclusive, free to access pathway for all adults that are wanting to change their physical or mental health. Fit Rovers is one of similar schemes at 62 clubs across England and Wales who will deliver these sessions as part of the EFL Trust’s Fit Fans project. The partnership will provide the opportunity for a minimum of 540 Doncaster men and women to access the support over the next three years. Fit Rovers was launched in January 2017 at Rovers’ home game against Portsmouth, places on the first course were quickly snapped up and Fit Rovers began its journey of improving the lives of Doncaster men. January 2019 saw the official launch of Fit Rovers ladies, this time live on Sky TV when Barnsley visited. Having secured funding from Sport England to run these session,s female

participants were quick to register their interest, resulting in additional sessions being added and a clear demand for provision beyond what had already being agreed. Throughout 2019, 176 women took part in Fit Rovers sessions achieving fantastic improvements in mental wellbeing, physical activity levels, reductions in weight and a reduction in their waist circumference. John Davis, chief operating officer at the Foundatiom, said: “What we have seen with Fit Rovers is that it is a project that has the ability to engage both men and women in important areas around their physical and mental wellbeing. What the team have built is a community of people that are wanting to positively improve their health, while also helping others.” Collectively male and female participants of Fit Rovers have contributed to the following: • 1028.6kg weight lost • 2,223.8cm reduction in waist circumference • 12,780 additional hours of exercise completed at follow on sessions

• 1,190 blood pressure checks completed • 80% of participants significantly improved their mental wellbeing On top of these headline statistics the development of the Fit Rovers project has provided the following opportunities for participants: • 80 participants have played an 11-a-side game on the Keepmoat Stadium turf • 12 participants completed the Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge with another 36 registered to take part in 2020 Scott Copeland, health and wellbeing officer, added: “We have already seen the effects of having the EFLT supporting us with the amount of enquires generated through national publicity. “The new format will allow us to offer free sessions for a total of 12 weeks and in addition, through our partnership with Doncaster Council, we will have an inclusive offer along with community outreach support – taking Fit Rovers into the community.”

CLUB DONCASTER AMBASSADORS

BACKGROUND

The Club Doncaster Ambassador programme was launched in August 2016. The role has changed over the past few years and has had varied degrees of success.

42

WHAT IS AN AMBASSADOR?

The scheme is about connecting with your local area. Your local area being where you live, where you socialise and maybe even place of work. An ambassador is a volunteer, approved by the club and tasked to simply distribute promotional materials from the club on a monthly basis. The ambition is to have at least one ambassador representing each recognised Doncaster and District village. We know our supporters base is vast so anywhere from Goole to Retford, Tickhill to Moorends, Thorne to Edlington.

HOW CAN I GET INVOLVED? AND WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO? HOW DO I GET STARTED? Please express your interest by one of the following options:

Contacting the lead ambassador Lee Rourke via supporterservices@clubdoncaster.co.uk, the Club Doncaster Box Office or speaking the the club SLOs. You will then be given more information on the role and asked to sign a disclaimer protecting you and the club.

COMMUNICATION

We meet as a group once per quarter, which is attended by key operational stakeholders within Club Doncaster, including Commercial, Marketing and Ticketing. You also receive the opportunity to attend other forums on a case by case basis such as Fans Forums, Supporters Boards and Meet the Owners.

YOUR REWARD

A free home ticket to all Rovers league games during the season (subject to your ongoing commitment to the scheme and providing regular proof of distribution.
