"OUR FOCUS WAS ON SATURDAY’S GAME AND TONIGHT’S BECAUSE WE KNOW TWO GOOD RESULTS COULD REALLY SET US UP HEADING INTO THE FINAL 15 GAMES"

GRANT McCANN GOOD EVENING AND WELCOME TO TONIGHT’S GAME AGAINST SOUTHEND UNITED. I’D LIKE TO WELCOME CHRIS POWELL, AS WELL AS THE SUPPORTERS, PLAYERS, STAFF AND OWNERS OF THE SHRIMPERS WHO HAVE MADE THE TRIP UP TODAY. We were very professional in our performance against Peterborough on Saturday, especially in the second-half when we turned the game to secure the three points. We showed the determination to win which I see every day in training, and it means we are full of confidence going into tonight’s game. I know there is a lot of excitement among supporters about Sunday’s Emirates FA Cup game against Crystal Palace, but our focus was on Saturday’s game and tonight’s because we know two good results could really set us up heading into the final 15 games. While we’ll be ready for Palace, the league is our number one priority for the season. Your backing in recent games has been fantastic, it is a real motivating factor for the players and staff and you can help us achieve what we want from the season. Enjoy the game.

"WITH YOUR HELP WE HAVE A REAL OPPORTUNITY TO CEMENT OUR PLACE IN THE END OF SEASON PLAY-OFFS, AND WHO KNOWS WHERE THAT COULD LEAD US"

GAVIN BALDWIN GOOD EVENING AND WELCOME TO THIS EVENING’S GAME AGAINST SOUTHEND UNITED. I’D LIKE TO WELCOME THE OWNERS, SUPPORTERS, PLAYERS AND STAFF OF THE SHRIMPERS WHO HAVE MADE THE TRIP UP TODAY. WE KNOW THE VISITING FANS WHO HAVE TRAVELLED UP FROM ESSEX MAY NOT GET BACK UNTIL THE EARLY HOURS OF THE MORNING, AND WE APPRECIATE THE EFFORT THEY HAVE MADE TO GET UP TO DONCASTER. I would also like to thank everyone who is here tonight supporting Rovers - home games are coming thick and fast at the moment and everyone appreciates the challenges that poses financially and on your time. But the backing we have seen at recent home games helps motivate everyone at the club to keep going and giving that little bit extra. Saturday’s result was an important one for us, and sets us up heading into the final third of the season. With your help we have a real opportunity to cement our place in the end of season play-offs, and who knows where that could lead us to for next season. We also have the exciting challenge of testing ourselves against a Premier League side in Crystal Palace on Sunday - and again we are expecting a good crowd, and there are a number of fans-led initiatives around the match.

I’d like to thank the supporters who stayed behind after our Meet The Owners event last Thursday to discuss Season Membership plans for next season with our group head of communications Shaun Lockwood. We will take the feedback into consideration before announcing the plans. Enjoy the game.

N O R A A S I W E L AARON LEWIS TOOK A BIG STEP IN HIS FOOTBALLING DEVELOPMENT WHEN HE WAS ALLOWED TO LEAVE SWANSEA CITY ON LOAN IN JANUARY. He moved more than 240 miles from home to join Rovers, and be a part of the play-off push in Sky Bet League One. “The first few weeks have been brilliant and I’ve settled in quickly so it’s been a nice transition for me,” he says. “The boys here are a great bunch and they’ve made it easy for me, it’s a close-knit group so I never felt any pressure. “There are always the nerves when you go out on loan for the first time but that is normal, I just had to get on with it. “The only difference for me is the location, I’m in a team with a group of lads who are desperate to do well for each other.”

DONCASTERROVERSFC.CO.UK

As part of Lewis’ growth as a player, he wanted to test himself as a person off the field. The move to South Yorkshire has taken him out of his comfort zone in terms of location. “Coming in and understanding what everyone was about was important for me, the manager made it clear what the goals were for the rest of the season,” he says. “Being from Swansea I’m used to having football and family very close by, so this is something I wanted to try as part of my development. “Not every player does it but it can be a big part of growing up and being able to look after yourself on and off the pitch. “Being able to get my league debut after going out on loan shows it’s been worth it, and it’s a great club to do it at. “I had to think about what was best for me, I wasn’t getting games at Swansea so the best thing to do was to come out and get some league experience.” Lewis already knew fellow loanee Herbie Kane before joining the club, which made it easier for him to settle in in South Yorkshire. He now shares a house with Kane and Kieran Sadlier, which has made him feel more at home while away from family. “I spoke to Herbie before I came here and he sold the club to me, I’ve known him for a while and now I’m staying with him it stops me from getting bored,” he says.

10

ISSUE 20 v SOUTHEND UNITED

“Both lads are good to share with as we’re of a similar age, so it’s a good place to have away from the football side of things. “Now I’m settled my motivation is to keep my place in the team, I had to bide my time and work hard but now I’m in I want to stay there.” His Rovers debut came in a well earnt 1-1 draw at promotion chasing Portsmouth earlier in February, with a solid team performance enough for a point on the road. Lewis settled into the side seamlessly at right-back against one of the league’s best wingers in Ronan Curtis, earning him praise from manager Grant McCann.

"THE BOYS HERE ARE A GREAT BUNCH AND THEY’VE MADE IT EASY FOR ME, IT’S A CLOSEKNIT GROUP SO I NEVER FELT ANY PRESSURE"

“I believe I delivered a good account of myself on my debut and the manager seemed to be happy with me so it’s a good start from myself,” he says. “I relished the chance to go up against one of the best teams in the league in Portsmouth, I prepared well and felt good going into it. “It was a great atmosphere to go into, I thrived on that and knew when we stepped out onto the pitch that it would bring out the best of me. “There are no easy games in this league and everybody has their own agenda to fight for, so I’m looking forward to the different challenges that will come up. “The important thing is to keep working hard, the manager and Cliff demand that from us because we know that will bring us results on the pitch.” This evening’s game against Southend United is the second of three in the space of eight days in league and cup for Rovers. Lewis has been impressed with the support of the Rovers fans since his arrival, as they continue to follow the team up and down the country. “It’s a massive week for us, all it can take is a couple of good results on the bounce and you’re right up there because momentum is massive in football,” he says.

"WE’VE GOT SOME MASSIVE GAMES COMING UP, AND IT’S GREAT TO KNOW THAT THEY WILL BACK US WHOEVER WE COME UP AGAINST" “We’re coming off the back off of some good results recently so we’re using that to keep us going for the rest of the season. “The fans all get behind us particularly when we’re playing well, we saw at the Oldham game just how good an atmosphere they can create. “We’ve got some massive games coming up, and it’s great to know that they will back us whoever we come up against. “They have travelled everywhere with us this season, seeing so many of them make the long trip down to Portsmouth was great.” Before he had made his first appearance in a Rovers shirt, the 20-year-old was made to feel a part of the squad by travelling to away games when he wasn’t involved. Now he’s in the team, he will have family making the long trip up from South Wales to watch him every week. “You get the overnight stays and the team atmosphere at any club, but it was great to travel with the boys even when I wasn’t in the matchday squad,” he adds. “It got me involved with them and I had to do with initiation on my first away trip which is always a laugh. “I’ve done a couple of initiations now and it never gets any easier, but it’s always fun and something everyone has to do. “It’s tough for me to go back home and it’s new for me to be so far away, but I’ve got good people around me to help me. “My family come up and see games when they can, but whether they’re here or not I know I’ve got their support.”

FOUR TO SOUTHEND UNITED

NATHAN BISHOP TOP STOPPER

13

The 19-year-old shot stopper came up through the youth ranks at Roots Hall, making his Shrimpers debut in December 2017 against Scunthorpe United. The form of usual first-choice goalkeeper Mark Oxley saw Bishop’s opportunities limited this season, however Bishop has enjoyed the last few weeks between the sticks following an injury to the former Hull City man. Breaking through into the first-team set-up at a young age has seen Bishop attract the attention of a number of top-flight clubs, meaning that the Shrimpers have a very hot prospect on their hands.

SAM MANTOM MIDFIELD MAESTRO

18

The central-midfielder was installed as Shrimpers skipper upon his arrival at Roots Hall in the summer. After starting out in Walsall’s academy, Mantom would then begin his career at West Bromwich Albion, with the Baggies paying £20,000 for the at the time. However, he would make his move back across the West Midlands and back to Walsall, initially on loan in 2012 before a permanent move to the Banks’s Stadium a year later. His time with the Saddlers was largely successful, helping them to the final of the Football League Trophy in 2015, whilst helping to guide them to a third-placed finish in League One the following season. Mantom moved on from Walsall after defeat in the play-off semi-final, joining Scunthorpe United and spending a season-and-a-half with the Iron. Mantom made his switch to Essex, initially on loan for the second half of last season, before making his move a permanent one, signing a two-year deal.

14

ISSUE 20 v SOUTHEND UNITED

TO WATCH MICHAEL TURNER DEFENSIVE ROCK

06

The experienced centre-half is a man with a wealth of Premier League experience, and he signed a one-year contract extension with the Shrimpers back in the summer. Lewisham-born Turner began his career with Charlton Athletic before a move across London to join Brentford. Turner is perhaps best known for his time with Hull City, being voted as the Tigers’ Player of the Year during the 2007/08 season in which they won promotion to the Premier League. After three years with Hull, Turner moved further north to Sunderland in 2009, before a move to his third Premier League side in Norwich City. Turner found opportunities limited however at Carrow Road, spending time on loan at Fulham and Sheffield Wednesday, before signing for the Shrimpers in the summer of 2017, linking up with then-Southend boss Phil Brown, with whom he’d achieved play-off success at Hull.

SIMON COX DEADLY STRIKER

10

The Shrimpers main man up top is a forward with plenty of Premier League and international experience, with a trip to Euro 2012 with the Republic of Ireland under his belt. Cox began his career with Reading, though he spent much of his time at the Majdeski Stadium away out on loan, including spells at Brentford, Northampton Town and Swindon Town. The latter of those loan switches was made permanent in January 2008, and his impressive form for the Robins over the next season-and-ahalf saw him earn a move to West Bromwich Albion, helping the Baggies to promotion in his first season. Cox made a step down to the second tier, firstly with Nottingham Forest in 2012, before a second spell with his first club Reading two years later. His move to Essex with the Shrimpers came around in 2016, scoring 16 goals in 44 games in his first season. And after a prolonged spell out with injury last term, he has hit the ground running at Roots Hall once again already well into double figures this campaign.

DONCASTERROVERSFC.CO.UK

15

TWO STRIKERS MAKE UP THE CONNECTIONS BETWEEN ROVERS AND THE SHRIMPERS, WITH THE FIRST OF THOSE STILL ON THE BOOKS AT ROOTS HALL, ALBEIT NOW ON LOAN AWAY FROM SOUTHEND. THEO ROBINSON is currently with League Two Swindon Town, joining up with former teammate Richie Wellens at the County Ground. He began his career with Stoke City and then Watford, though he spent much of his time away from Vicarage Road out on loan. One successful spell saw him join Hereford United for the 2007/08 season, finishing as top scorer with 16 goals as the Bulls secured automatic promotion from League Two. Another loan spell saw him sign for the Shrimpers in January 2009, scoring seven goals in 21 games and forming a strong partnership with Lee Barnard, which then saw him secure a permanent move to Huddersfield Town the following summer. Once again, Robinson ended the season with 16 goals and this then earnt him a move to Millwall, initially on loan, before making the move a permanent one in January 2011. However, his time with Millwall would be ended just a month later as he joined Derby County on a three-month loan deal, which would then be made permanent at the end of the 2010/11 season. Robinson would spend two seasons with the Rams, becoming joint-top scorer in his first full season, before his move to the Keepmoat Stadium in 2013, where he would score on his debut in a 2-0 win over Blackburn Rovers. The Jamaican international forward spent two seasons with Rovers, scoring 12 goals in 63 league games, with one of the most notable being his equaliser in a South Yorkshire derby against Barnsley in December 2014. Robinson would move on to Scunthorpe United on loan, where he would score just a minute in to his debut in March 2015, before permanent spells with Motherwell and Port Vale, eventually joining the Imps in October 2016. He was a key figure in the Imps’ attack during their famous FA Cup run which saw them become the first non-league side in over 100 years to reach the quarter-finals of the famous competition. His stunning FA Cup form saw him make a return to Southend on the final day of the

16

ISSUE 20 v SOUTHEND UNITED

January transfer window in 2017, making his second Shrimpers debut against Scunthorpe United, whilst scoring his first goal in his second spell with the second goal in a 2-0 win away at Oxford. In that 2-0 win at Oxford, the second connection between the two sides was the man who opened the scoring at the Kassam Stadium, with MARC-ANTOINE FORTUNÉ leading the line at both the Keepmoat Stadium and Roots Hall. A man with experience in no less than four of the top leagues in Europe, as well as appearances in both the Champions League and Europa League with Celtic, Fortune arrived at the Keepmoat Stadium on loan from West Bromwich Albion in 2011, making his debut in a goalless draw with Watford, scoring his first goal for the club in a 2-1 defeat away to Birmingham City. After two seasons with Wigan Athletic and then a season with Coventry City, Fortune joined Southend, making his debut in a 1-1 draw with Peterborough United in League One, scoring his first goal in the next game in a 1-0 win over Leyton Orient in the EFL Trophy. He left the Shrimpers at the end of his second season at Roots Hall, and in August 2018, he linked up with Martin Allen at National League side Chesterfield as he looks to help the Spireites return to the EFL as soon as possible after last season’s relegation. Alex Gibbings

MEMORABLE MATCH SOUTHEND UNITED

MAY 16 2008

Rovers emphatically secured a place in the League One play-off final with a 5-1 home win over Southend United in May 2008. James Coppinger’s hat-trick followed an early own-goal and a Brian Stock penalty to seal a Wembley showdown with Yorkshire rivals Leeds United nine days later. It was the visitors who started brightly, and they could have taken the lead inside the opening eight minutes of the game, with James Walker somehow striking the bar from six yards, and it would be a miss that his side would rue just three minutes later as Jason Price went down in the area. He was felled in the box by Peter Clarke, and captain Stock stepped up to slot the ball home and hand Rovers the lead on the night and on aggregate, following a goalless draw in the return leg at Roots Hall. Things would get even better for Rovers just over ten minutes later, with Price again involved, and he forced Shrimpers’ defender Adam Barrett to turn the ball into his own net, leaving Southend with a huge task with 70 minutes left of the game.

Five minutes before the break, Coppinger would take control of the game completely, cutting inside from the right, twisting and turning around four Southend defenders before slotting into the far corner, effectively sealing Rovers’ place at Wembley before half-time. After the interval it would be more of the same from Coppinger, and he doubled his tally on the night with an almost identical finish to his first. This time he cut in from the right, took on what seemed like the whole of the Shrimpers’ midfield and backline, and curled into the far corner with his weaker left foot to make it four with just under 40 minutes of the second half left to play. Coppinger’s hat-trick would be sealed with 10 minutes to go, as he earned a free kick on the edge of the area, and his neat routine with Paul Green saw him loop the ball over the despairing Daryl Flahavan, sending the Keepmoat crowd into raptures, as well as firing his side to Wembley to face Leeds United. Nicky Bailey did score a late consolation goal for the visitors with two minutes left to play, but the game would purely be remembered for one of the greatest hat-tricks Rovers fans would ever be likely to see.

WHAT HAPPENED NEXT? As if Rovers fans would need reminding of what happened next, they did of course go on to beat Leeds at the national stadium nine days later, with James Hayter’s headed goal just a couple minutes after the break all that would be needed to seal Rovers return to the second tier of English football after a 50-year absence. Their first game in the Championship saw them travel to Derby County, a team that had just been relegated from the Premier League, but Lewis Guy’s winner saw them pick up an opening day three points. That win would be the first of just four in the first 24 games of the season, however an eight-match unbeaten run saw them rise up the table, and they consolidated in 14th place at the end of the season. They would then finish 12th the following year, with an early season play-off push being thwarted late on, but in all, Rovers would spend five seasons in the second tier, before bouncing back from relegation immediately with the League One title in 2013. For Southend, they were relegated two years later, but would return to League One with a play-off success of their own, defeating Wycombe Wanderers on penalties in 2015 at Wembley Stadium, going on to finish in a respectable 14th place in their first season back in the league.

THE

NUMBERS GAME LIKE ITS PREDECESSOR, THE NO. 17 SHIRT HAS BEEN PASSED AROUND A LOT ALTHOUGH IT HAS BEEN WORN BY SIX PLAYERS WHO HAVE WON FULL INTERNATIONAL CAPS. WHEN ROVERS INTRODUCED SQUAD NUMBERS AT THE START OF THE 2002-03 SEASON, DEFENDER KEVIN SANDWITH (2002),WAS THE FIRST NO. 17, MAKING ONLY TWO APPEARANCES THAT SEASON BEFORE MOVING TO HALIFAX TOWN. HE WAS SUCCEEDED BY CHRIS BEECH (2002-05), A LEFT-BACK, WHO HAD THE UNFORTUNATE EXPERIENCE OF MAKING HIS DEBUT IN A 0-8 DEFEAT AT CREWE ALEXANDRA IN A FOOTBALL LEAGUE TROPHY MATCH. USUALLY AN UNDERSTUDY TO TIM RYAN, BEECH MADE ONLY 35 APPEARANCES IN TOTAL BEFORE JOINING CARLISLE UNITED. Much-travelled striker RICHARD OFFIONG (2005-06), who began his career at Newcastle United, had a brief spell in the No. 17, and for 2006-07 it passed to JONATHAN FORTE, in his second spell on loan from Sheffield United. Forte, who had previously worn 24, scored in the first minute of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Final at Cardiff, in which Rovers eventually beat Bristol Rovers 3-2. Forte, who had been capped by England at junior levels, went on to play international football for Barbados. Scottish midfielder MARTIN WOODS (2007-10, 2013-14) joined Rovers at the start of the 2007-08 season after showing impressive form for Rotherham United. Initially he struggled to earn a place in Sean O’Driscoll’s side, and had a spell on loan at Yeovil Town. However, with Rovers in the Championship for 2008-09 he became a regular and appeared in 41 League games. All told he had six seasons with Rovers, making 133 appearances, although he took over the No. 7 shirt at the start of the 2010-11 season. That allowed RYAN MASON (2010-11), signed on loan from Tottenham Hotspur, to have No. 17. Mason impressed in his loan spell and returned the following season although he was hampered by injury. His form with Spurs earned him an England cap in 2015. Another player who earned international recognition after leaving Rovers was GILES BARNES (2011-12). Having impressed as a youngster at Derby County his career had stalled somewhat by the time he arrived at Rovers and he was unable to prevent the club being relegated from the Championship. Subsequently he has played in the USA with some success and in 2015 he won his first cap for Jamaica. Although born in Edinburgh, IAIN HUME (2012-13) was capped 43 times by Canada, earning international recognition during his season with Rovers. The former Tranmere Rovers, Leicester City and Barnsley

forward arrived on loan from Preston North End and made a valuable contribution to Rovers’ League One title campaign. He scored six times in 33 League appearances and provided a valuable foil for strikers Chris Brown and Billy Paynter. After another spell in which the shirt was held by Martin Woods, the No. 17 moved on to the Romanian international defender GABRIEL TAMAS (2014). Having represented his country in Euro 2008, the former West Bromwich Albion centre-back was signed on a short=term deal after injuries to Rob Jones and Bongani Khumalo. He made 14 appearances for Rovers but couldn’t prevent relegation from the Championship. Left-back ENDA STEVENS (2014-15) had been with Rovers in that 2013-14 campaign, wearing the No. 31. He returned for a second spell on loan from Aston Villa the following season and made 32 appearances, scoring once. Moving on to Portsmouth and Sheffield United he was capped by the Republic of Ireland this year. Scottish centre-back GARY MACKENZIE wore No. 17 for 2015-16, and since then the shirt has been the property of midfielder MATTY BLAIR (2016-date). Unlike some others international recognition may not come his way but he remains one of the most popular players at the club. JOHN COYLE

ACADEMY

Paul Stancliffe heaped praise on his young players for their strong mentality during their victory over Scunthorpe United on Saturday morning. Rovers’ U18s secured a comfortable victory against the Iron, despite most of the team having already played the day before in the U23s Premier League Cup. He said: “The mentality was something we’ve gone on about – the mental toughness they needed out there. Back in my day it was like that where you used to get two or three games in a few days, but they proved they could do it and that it wasn’t a problem. “We had to contest with a bobbly pitch, we had howling wind and the conditions weren’t perfect, but it was the same for both teams. I thought we won the battles more than they did and it was one of those games we had to grind out and I thought we did, and our lads really stuck to the task. “The first 20-minutes I thought we were a bit too open for my liking but once they sorted out the problems themselves we had a chat at half-time and in the second-half it was never going to be a footballing game but we showed we could do the other side of the game as well so I was really pleased with them.” The result means Rovers move back to the top of their table, but Stancliffe prefers to take it one game at a time. He added: “It’s good to have a run and the boys are enjoying it – it’s good to be a part of – we’ve just got to make sure that as coaches we analyse everything and them as players are able to analyse their own positions to help them learn. “If we can come out of the rest of this season with this run-in intact, we’ll just have to see where it takes us. For now, we just need to remain focused on winning games and developing the players. “It’s always good to get a win whether its Scunthorpe or whoever but it was pleasing the way we got it – we adapted to conditions today and we stuck at it.”

Hello everyone! Welcome to our evening game against Southend United and thank you for making the journey. Last week I was lucky enough to be taken to Sparken Hill Academy to meet the winners of the Trax FM competition. The children came to our last match and lots came for the first time so I am hoping they keep coming back and get as hooked as us. Our next game is against Crystal Palace in the FA Cup and I am delighted to know the stadium is going to be rocking again

Enjoy the game! Donny Dog DONCASTERROVERSFC.CO.UK

COMMERCIAL GOOD EVENING AND WELCOME BACK TO THE KEEPMOAT STADIUM AS WE HOST SOUTHEND UNITED UNDER THE LIGHTS. It has been a manic few weeks at Rovers with three home games in quick succession, but it has created some fantastic atmospheres here in the Jibba Jabba Restaurant. Looking at this evening fixture and our visitors are in mid table, but anything can happen at this stage of the season though, so Grant McCann’s side cannot be complacent as they chase down the play-off spots and beyond. We are delighted to welcome tonight’s match sponsor, Stadium Stars. The nursery based at the Keepmoat Stadium offers high quality early years education for your little ones and is open five days a week, all year round from 7.30am until 6pm. The nursery has places available for children aged from three months to five-years-old. For further information please visit www. townrowtinytots.co.uk or give them a call on 01302 590880. Also joining us today is Bidfood, food wholesalers, suppliers and distributors, who are this evening’s matchball sponsor. One of the largest food wholesalers in the UK, Bidfood are one of Club Doncaster’s Official Partners and work together to forge a mutually beneficial relationship. We wish both our sponsors the warmest of welcomes and hope that they enjoy the experience whatever the result There are a range of exciting commercial opportunities available at Club Doncaster, whether you want to advertise your business, become an Official Partner or just celebrate a special occasion with your loved ones. For more information on any of the packages available, contact the team on 01302 764665 or email commericial@clubdoncaster.co.uk.

SAFETY Three points is not the only priority today. Making sure everyone goes home safe is the most important result. Over recent months we have been working closely with the police and the EFL to review security at the Keepmoat Stadium. Now we are asking you to do your bit. It is vital that everyone - players, staff and supporters - remains vigilant and reports any concerns to stewards or police. Attacks might be rare, and the chance of you being caught up in one unlikely, but the message is ACT #ActionCountersTerrorism. Rovers safety officer Sam Ramsden said:

AD-105x148-Football Foundation.indd 1

"We want everyone to enjoy today’s game at the Keepmoat Stadium but if you see anything that causes you concern, tell a steward or staff member. Please do not worry that you might be wasting our time. "The stewards are here to help keep us all safe so please be patient and cooperate with their instructions. When it comes to security it has to be a team effort and we are all players." Here's a quick reminder of what you can do to help keep yourself and others safe: • Arrive early, allowing more time for security checks • Minimise what you carry, fewer bag searches will speed up entry to the ground

• Be vigilant at all times and if you see anything suspicious, tell a steward right away • If you see anything that could pose an immediate threat to safety, call 999 • In an emergency, listen to the public address instructions and follow them • If told to evacuate, do so immediately, do not wait around to film events on your mobile • Move right away from the stadium as quickly as possible for your safety and to allow clear access for any emergency vehicles • Once you are safe, follow the local police force on Twitter for updates To find out more, visit gov.uk/ACT or @TerrorismPolice

SUPPORTER LIAISON OFFICER DEAN MEDCALF GOOD EVENING LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, AND A WARM WELCOME TO THE KEEPMOAT STADIUM, INCLUDING THE VISITING FANS FROM SOUTHEND UNITED.

I would like to thank all the 480 Rovers fans who made the recent trip to Portsmouth, I hope you all had a safe journey and enjoyed the game. It has been a great couple of weeks for Rovers, especially in the FA Cup. The game against Oldham was a ‘proper’ FA Cup tie; it had it all, end to end football, goals, red cards and late drama. What an atmosphere we had for this game as well, an attendance of over 11,000 made it even more special. Now we have been drawn at home against Premier League side Crystal Palace and let’s hope we can get the same crowd, atmosphere and result in the fifth round. Tickets for this game are now on general sale.

I recently attended the Supporters Club AGM at the Intake Social Club; the main focus of this meeting was to discuss safeguarding of young fans travelling on the supports coaches to away game. Following this meeting, there will be a few changes made to the rules and regulations for young fans travelling. I would like to stress that these changes are not being made to put our young supporters off from travelling on the coaches, but it is to make sure that they are safe and looked after. Finally, I would like to take this opportunity as well to wish my granddad, Keith, a very happy 74th birthday for last week! Last Sunday

also marked the anniversary of his very first Rovers game 70 years ago! The day after his fourth birthday, he attended his first Rovers game at Belle Vue which saw Rovers beat Bradford City 2-0 and 70 years later let’s hope for a similar result today. As always I hope you all enjoy today’s game, if you have any questions then please contact me on the usual SLO social media accounts, @SLO_DRFC on twitter, DRFC SLO on Facebook or you can email me at dean.medcalf@ clubdoncaster.co.uk. If you are a loose end and have any programmes or football books that you want to get rid of, we can collect and take them to the supporter’s club shop. Hope you enjoy the game. Rovers Till We Die Paul Mayfield

VIKING SUPPORTERS CO-OPERATIVE Football is the national game, and football supporters are the lifeblood of the game. While many privately owned football clubs are well run, ours included, there are numerous examples over the years where this model of ownership has failed the supporters of that club, and has led to a number of clubs becoming either partly or fully owned by those supporters. The Minister Of Sport set up the Expert Working Group with the intention of looking at ways to improve engagement and dialogue between clubs and fans, and therefore to improve transparency and trust. The detailed recommendations from the EWG led to the government instructing the EFL and the Premier League to enter into structured dialogue with those supporters, and especially with the supporters trust at that club. As you may be aware the club hold two Meet The Owners events each year which meet the criteria set down by the EFL. On top of that the club have a Supporters Board which meets on a regular basis during the season to discuss a very broad range of topics. Suffice to say that DRFC have not only met the requirements but have exceeded them in both frequency and content, and that is something we can once again be proud of. Martin O'Hara

FOUNDATION UP

Sky Bet Championship referee Darren England visited Club Doncaster Sports College students to offer an insight into life as a professional referee. The match official, who has refereed 48 Sky Bet Championship games, spoke with Year 13, BTEC Level 3 learners about his development into refereeing and the sacrifices involved in refereeing at an elite level. Along with questions surrounding their assignment topics, learners we offered a unique opportunity to pitch questions to Darren about all facets of life as a referee. In-depth discussions took place around VAR, dealing with teams and managers and issues around respect, whilst also looking into the values of working in harmony with a group of officials to produce the best officiating possible. BTEC L3 Sport Lecturer, Ben Thompson said: "We’re extremely grateful to Darren for taking the time out of his busy schedule to give our learners a unique insight into the world of an elite referee. "As part of our commitment to learner enrichment, Club Doncaster Sports College strive to offer all of our learners real life experiences which will enhance their learning; Darren’s input is invaluable to the learner’s Unit 25 assignment on Rules, Regulations and Officiating in Sport."

"CLUB DONCASTER SPORTS COLLEGE STRIVE TO OFFER ALL OF OUR LEARNERS REAL LIFE EXPERIENCES WHICH WILL ENHANCE THEIR LEARNING"

DATE Pupils from local primary schools were given tickets for today’s match - and they got a personal invite from first-team players as part of the Rovers Roadshow. Tyler Smith and Alfie May visited Hawthorn Primary School, Andy Butler and Herbie Kane travelled to Bessacarr Primary,Ali Crawford and Danny Andrew made the trip to Willow Academy, and Marko Marosi and Matty Blair called Auckley Primary School. The players answered questions from pupils focusing on resilience, explaining how hard they had to work to become professional footballers, and how they have had to overcome obstacles and challenges. Club Doncaster Foundation school sports development officer Kelly Jackson-Powell said: “It was great to have the Rovers players down at the schools to talk about their own experiences with resilience. “The pupils always ask really good questions and hopefully will take on board the advice from the players. We hope to continue working with schools to deliver this sort of opportunity for everyone involved.” All pupils at each school were given complimentary tickets for this afternoon’s game.
