"THAT FAMILY FOCUS WHICH RUNS IN THE CLUB'S DNA WAS ONE OF THE BIG REASONS WHY I WAS DESPERATE TO COME FOR THAT INTERVIEW IN THE SUMMER"

GRANT McCANN GOOD EVENING, AND WELCOME BACK TO THE KEEPMOAT STADIUM. YOUR SUPPORT OVER THE TWO HOME GAMES THIS WEEK IS VITAL AND GREATLY APPRECIATED BY EVERYONE AT THE CLUB. Your support is a real help and can be the difference for us in the five home games to push us into the top six. It was really pleasing to see us pick up two awards last week for our work off the pitch, with Matty Blair named PFA League One Community Player of the Year and the club as a whole taking the League One Family Club of the Year prize. Both are well deserved, and I will be keeping my fingers crossed as we head to the main EFL Awards next month to see if we’ve won any overall prizes. The awards are no surprise to me. That family focus which runs in the clubs DNA was one of the big reasons why I was desperate to come for that interview in the summer. It's what I'm about, I'm a family man and the club do so much work behind the scenes to make things like that possible - I’m regularly asked

by our communications team if they can bring down a supporter to the training ground to meet players and have a look behind the scenes. I've never been anywhere where the players want to be so involved with the community work. It's a credit to them for that - I was at the EFL Awards two years ago when Andy Butler was named PFA Community Player of the Year and Paul Mayfield was Supporter of the Year, and with Blairy collecting the League One Community Player of the Year in the two seasons since it shows how much that culture is built into the club. Enjoy the game.

"THE GROWTH WE HAVE SEEN OVER THE PAST FEW YEARS AS WE’VE DEVELOPED THE CLUB DONCASTER PROJECT IS GENUINELY INSPIRING AND SOMETHING WE CAN ALL BE VERY PROUD OF"

GAVIN BALDWIN GOOD EVENING AND WELCOME BACK TO THE KEEPMOAT STADIUM FOR TONIGHT’S VISIT OF BRISTOL ROVERS. I’D LIKE TO WELCOME THE SUPPORTERS, PLAYERS, STAFF AND BOARDROOM GUESTS WHO HAVE MADE THE LONG TRIP UP AND WISH THEM A SAFE JOURNEY HOME AFTERWARDS. Sometimes you have to hold your hands up and say you were beaten by a very good team, and I think that was the case at Luton on Saturday. In both their games against us this season they have been excellent, and they are deservedly top of the league. But the home games tonight and on Saturday are real opportunities for us to set our stall out as play-off contenders as we head into the final eight games of the regular season.

Part of that off-field growth is seen in the Club Doncaster Sports College now celebrating its 10th anniversary, we have a number of former students back at tonight’s game who have had a bit of a reunion and celebrate their successes. The growth we have seen over the past few years as we’ve developed the Club Doncaster project is genuinely inspiring and something we can all be very proud of.

It was confirmed last week that we had won two divisional EFL Awards, with Matty Blair being named the League One PFA Community Player of the Year and us also being named Family Club of the Year for League One.

Tonight we also welcome Kick It Out, football’s equality and inclusion organisation, as we dedicate our fixture to their work campaigning for equality football, in their 25th anniversary season.

These means great deal to us, because we pride ourselves as being more than just a football club. We want Rovers, and Club Doncaster, to be central in making Doncaster and the region the best it can be through sport. Congratulations to Matty, who has made an incredible impact on our Fit Rovers course at Club Doncaster Foundation as well as being central to the club’s mental health efforts. Congratulations also to the many people involved in pulling together our remarkable family offering which is now officially the best in the division.

If you are a victim or witness any form of discrimination while attending a Rovers game please contact your nearest steward or report it via our safe text number which is on the back of the programme. Enjoy the game.

ISSUE 24 v BRISTOL ROVERS

E I B R HE E N A K DESPITE NOT BEING INVOLVED THROUGH INJURY, HERBIE KANE HAS MORE OF AN INCENTIVE THAN MOST TO WANT TO TAKE THREE POINTS OFF BRISTOL ROVERS AT THE KEEPMOAT STADIUM THIS EVENING.

Growing up 20 minutes from the Memorial Ground as a Bristol City fan, the midfielder will have family and friends from the red side of the city cheering Rovers on to victory. “Coming from Bristol and being a City fan it’s fair to say I’m not a massive fan of them, we had a great result down there which was nice,” he says. “We need to make sure that we focus on getting the three points because they’ve started to pick up some results. “A lot has changed since we went there so it will be different, a new manager has gone in which always brings new ideas. “The performance at their place was probably our best of the season so far, we were so dominant from start to finish and scored some really good goals. “I think the way we passed the ball and how strong we were strong defensively made it a really good complete team performance. “I feel that on our day we can beat anyone, so we won’t be focusing too much on them and doing what we can to win the game.”

The personal allegiances will only be thought of after the game according to Kane, who believes the focus is on getting the win on the night. With Rovers' play-off push entering the final straight, the on-loan Liverpool man says the squad are confident of securing a top six finish after their hard work this season.

Kane says that despite going a few games without a win, the group remain positive with a good team spirit having a key part to play throughout the training ground. “There is a positive vibe in the camp, we’re trying really hard to get into the play-off places and taking each game as it comes,” he says.

“I reckon there will be a few messages from my family and friends telling me they’re all backing us to get the win,” he says.

“It’s the business end of the season so results matter, we need to carry on doing what we’ve been doing all season.

“A lot of my mates and family are big Bristol City fans as well, so of course it is a game that has an extra edge to it personally.

“We’ve had games against the top two recently and Wimbledon before that who were struggling, so it’s going to be tough whoever we come up against.

“It’s disappointing to be missing out through injury, I’ll try not to think about it too much until afterwards but if we get the victory it will taste that bit sweeter. “At this stage of the season getting wins is all that matters, it might look ugly at times but we’ll take as many points as we can get.” After a frustrating run of results in the league for Rovers, this evening’s game is one in hand which gives them a chance to go ahead of Peterborough United and into sixth place. At this stage of the season the majority of teams have something to play for, with this evening’s opponents just three points above the relegation zone.

"IT’S THE BUSINESS END OF THE SEASON SO RESULTS MATTER, WE NEED TO CARRY ON DOING WHAT WE’VE BEEN DOING ALL SEASON"

“A lot of us haven’t experienced something like this where there it’s possible to achieve something special, but it’s a pressure we’re all thriving on as each game comes up. “We play some really nice football and produce good performances so it’s important that the results follow that.” Rovers face two home games in the matter of five days which could leave the league table looking a lot clearer with six games remaining once the week is out. Unbeaten at the Keepmoat Stadium since October, Kane believes they have done well to make it a really difficult place to play for opposing sides this season. “We know that people don’t like playing here, it is a really big pitch and the football we play means it’s tough for teams to match our energy,” he says. “Our home form has been really good, it’s our place to play football and we want to make sure teams don’t get it easy here. “Momentum is always key in football, and we’ve manage to get that going at home, it’s our home and somewhere we love to play.

"A LOT OF US HAVEN’T EXPERIENCED SOMETHING LIKE THIS WHERE THERE IT’S POSSIBLE TO ACHIEVE SOMETHING SPECIAL, BUT IT’S A PRESSURE WE’RE ALL THRIVING ON" “The crowds have naturally improved as the season has gone on and we’ve been doing well, this is the stage of the season now where we need our supporters to stick with us and be the extra man out there on the field. “We’ve got some massive games coming up and we’re in the middle of a tough run, we want to try and build the gap over seventh and put ourselves in a commanding position.” Away from the playing side of things, Kane currently shares a house with teammates Kieran Sadlier and Aaron Lewis, with all of them relatively new to the South Yorkshire area. While they all share responsibilities around the house, he says it is good to have people of a similar age to relax with when they arenot either playing or training. “Living with the lads is good, they’re two great lads and we all get on so it gives us a chance to switch off when we’re not training or playing,” he adds. “Me and Sads do the majority of the cooking and take it in turns, Aaron can be a bit messy so we have a cleaner come round to tidy the place sometimes but we keep it generally clean. “It’s helped us all to feel at home up here, we’re all from different places so it’s nice to be able to settle in and help each other along the way. “As a young player you need the time away from football, but make sure you do things properly away from the game as well.”

FOUR TO BRISTOL ROVERS

JACK BONHAM TOP STOPPER

13

The 25-year-old stopper is on loan until the end of the season from Championship side Brentford. A product of the Watford youth academy, Bonham also spent time on loan at Harrow Borough before his move to the Bees, signing an initial two-year deal at Griffin Park. Bonham has also spent time at non-league side Arlesey Town and League Two outfit Carlisle United, making 49 appearances in all competitions for the Blues last season. Bonham joined the Pirates at the end of August on a season-long loan and he has gone on to cement his place as the side’s number one. Bonham has also represented the Republic of Ireland’s under-17 side five times, and after some good form for the Pirates, he has been linked with a senior call-up in recent months.

ED UPSON MIDFIELD MAESTRO

06

The former England youth international joined the Pirates from Milton Keynes back in the summer. After coming up through the ranks with Ipswich Town, Upson also spent time on loan at Stevenage and Barnet going to make a permanent move to Yeovil Town in 2010. He spent four years with the Glovers, helping them to promotion from League One alongside Rovers in 2013, as Yeovil beat Brentford 2-1 at Wembley Stadium to reach the Championship for the first time in the club’s history. After half a season in the second tier however, Upson moved to Millwall, spending the next 18 months at The Den, before joining Milton Keynes following their relegation from the Championship in 2016. After two seasons at Stadium:MK, Upson stayed in League One and joined up with the Pirates, and he scored his first goal for the club in their 3-1 defeat away at Queens Park Rangers in the second round of the Carabao Cup in late August.

TOM LOCKYER DEFENSIVE ROCK

The Pirates’ skipper is a Welsh international defender, making his senior debut for his country in 2017. Born in Cardiff, Lockyer came up through the youth academy at Bristol Rovers, and he has since gone on to make close to 250 appearances in the blue and white quarters. He was a part of the side that went from the National League to League One with back-to-back promotions, winning the National League play-offs before finishing third in League Two in 2016. Lockyer made seven appearances for the Welsh under-21 squad, before first being called up to the senior side in June 2017, being an unused substitute in a game against Serbia. He made his debut just a couple months later, coming on as a half-time substitute in a 1-1 draw with Panama in a friendly in November of the same year.

JONSON CLARKE-HARRIS DEADLY STRIKER

19

The striker joined the Pirates in January from Coventry City and hit the ground running, scoring six times in his first five games. Clarke-Harris began his career with the Sky Blues, coming up through their academy, before a brief stint with Peterborough United. He joined Oldham Athletic in 2013, spending one season with the Latics, scoring seven league goals. He then joined Rotherham United the following year, spending four years in total with the Millers and scoring his first goal for the club in a 2-1 win against Leeds United. He also spent three loan spells away from the club, including time here at the Keepmoat Stadium, scoring once in a 3-1 away win at his former club Coventry City. Clarke-Harris returned to the Ricoh Arena on a permanent deal in 2018, helping them to promotion back to League One via the play-offs. After a year with the Sky Blues, Clarke-Harris headed for Bristol Rovers, and he has been in fine form of late, including a hat-trick for the Pirates in just his fifth game for the club, in a 4-0 win at home to Blackpool.

THE PERIOD BETWEEN 2002 AND 2004 WAS A VERY SUCCESSFUL ONE FOR THOSE CONNECTED WITH DONCASTER ROVERS, AND THE MAN WHO WAS THE SPEARHEAD FOR THE SUCCESS PROVIDES US WITH THE FIRST CONNECTION BETWEEN BOTH CLUBS. DAVE PENNEY enjoyed a period of eight years in total in South Yorkshire as both a player and a manager, making his move to Belle Vue in 1998 from Cardiff City following Rovers’ relegation into the Conference. After beginning his playing career with Pontefract Collieries, Penney joined Derby County in 1985, spending four years with the Rams helping them rise from the Third Division to the First Division, earning himself a Second Division championship medal in 1987. After his time at the Baseball Ground, Penney moved further south and signed for Oxford United, making over 100 league appearances for the U’s across a five-year spell, spending a brief period on loan at Swansea City in 1991. It would be to Swansea where he would make his next permanent move three years later, returning to their then home of Vetch Field in 1994. He enjoyed success with the Swans during both his loan stint and his three-year spell in that part of South Wales, winning both the Welsh Cup and the West Wales Senior Cup in 1991, before winning the latter again in 1995. Penney would cross the South Wales divide in 1997, spending a season with rivals Cardiff City before his move back to Yorkshire, signing for Rovers. After two years as a player, Penney took the manager’s job on in 2000, initially combining it with his playing duties before solely focusing on his managerial role the following year. He masterminded Rovers’ return back to the Football League in 2003, with Francis Tierney scoring a golden goal at Stoke’sBrittania Stadium in a 3-2 win over Dagenham and Redbridge, a goal which was the only golden goal ever to have secured a promotion in football history. Upon Rovers’ re-entry into the league, he then steered them to even more success, flying to the top of the Division Three table and winning the league title ahead of Hull City, Huddersfield Town and Torquay United, securing back-to-back promotions and capping off a remarkable rise from non-league. Penney then over saw Rovers’ record breaking league cup run in the 2005/06 season, in which they beat top-flight side Manchester City 3-0 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in 120 minutes, before beating another Premier League side in Aston Villa on their way to the quarter-finals where they ultimately lost another shoot-out to Arsenal, though they were just one minute away from a historic place in the semi-final. Penney would depart Belle Vue in the early part

16

ISSUE 24 v BRISTOL ROVERS

of the 2006/07 season, though he returned to Doncaster for the first time with his new club Darlington later on that season, spending three years in all with the Quakers. After a season in charge of Oldham Athletic, Penney took charge of Bristol Rovers in 2011, though he only spent just a couple of months in charge of the Pirates. More recently, Penney has been involved with another Yorkshire club, helping out with National League North side York City as their sporting director. KYLE BENNETT is the second connection between the two clubs, currently on the books at the Memorial Stadium, though he is currently on loan at League Two side Swindon Town. He joined the Pirates in January 2018 from Portsmouth, winning the League Two title with Pompey the year before. Bennett helped Rovers to the League One title in 2013, playing 35 times in the league during their title-winning campaign, and went on to make 136 appearances in all competitions during his time at the Keepmoat Stadium, before his departure to the south coast in 2015. The attacking midfielder scored on his first start for the Pirates in February last year, scoring the equaliser in a 2-1 win over Oxford United in League One. He joined up with former Rovers teammate Richie Wellens at Swindon Town in the last transfer window, making a temporary switch to the County Ground, and made his debut in a 2-0 win over Forest Green Rovers. Alex Gibbings

MEMORABLE MATCH BRISTOL ROVERS

APRIL 1 2007

Rovers won the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy deep in to extra time thanks to a header from captain Graeme Lee in a battle of the Rovers at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium in April 2007. Bristol Rovers had not conceded a goal on their route to the final, however that would all soon change as Doncaster got off to the best possible start, as they went into the lead inside the opening minute of the game. Paul Heffernan’s determination to get to the ball ahead of Pirates’ keeper Steve Phillips saw him nick the ball away and into the path of Jonathan Forte who volleyed into an empty net after 49 seconds, leaving Rovers in dreamland in the Welsh capital. Things would get even better just four minutes later, as Rovers doubled their lead, stunning their lower league opponents. Neil Sullivan’s long punt forward fell straight into the path of Heffernan, and his first time half-volley was fired across Phillips and into the far corner, extending Rovers lead and seemingly cruising to victory after five minutes of the game. Not to be outdone, however, the Gas came out inspired after the break, and shooting towards their own fans, they earned themselves a penalty with four minutes of the

second half gone. Sammy Igoe was brought down, and Richard Walker stepped up to fire the ball into the corner, despite Sullivan getting a hand to the ball, and 15 minutes later they would be level. Igoe would be the man to force extra time, as he stabbed home from the centre of the goal after Rickie Lambert lofted the ball over Sullivan, leaving the Doncaster goal completely empty, and the Pirates midfielder had the simplest of tasks to score the equalising goal. Both Rovers would head into an extra 30 minutes, with neither side able to find a winner in normal time, but it would be skipper Lee that would step forward and be the Doncaster hero. Lee’s first header from a Sean Thornton corner was blocked behind for another corner, and with the second set-piece, the Scottish defender rose highest to steer the ball into the corner, with Phillips unable to get anywhere near the ball. Doncaster had their work cut out as the game entered its final 10 minutes, but they saw it out and the full-time whistle sounded to ensure that Rovers would secure their first Football League Trophy.

WHAT HAPPENED NEXT? Doncaster would go on to finish in 11th position in League One that season, before going on to reach the Championship in their first full season playing at the Keepmoat Stadium. They won the League One play-offs against Leeds United in May 2008, securing their place in English football’s second tier for the first time in 50 years, going on to spend four seasons in the division. Bristol Rovers on the other hand wouldn’t have to wait as long to bounce back, as they returned to Cardiff for the League Two play-off final, after finishing sixth before defeating Lincoln City 7-4 on aggregate in the semi-final, setting up a Millennium Stadium showdown with Shrewsbury Town. Walker and Igoe would get on the scoresheet once again, with Walker scoring twice and Igoe scoring in the last minute to seal promotion to League One for the Pirates in a 3-1 win over the Shrews. Gas striker Rickie Lambert played in both Cardiff finals, and he went on to play for Southampton, Liverpool and West Bromwich Albion in the Premier League, as well as scoring on his England debut against Scotland, and featuring in the Three Lions’ 2014 World Cup squad in Brazil.

THE DYNAMIC MIDFIELDER FORCED HIS WAY INTO THE SIDE AND SCORED IN THE CONFERENCE PLAY-OFF FINAL AGAINST DAGENHAM AND REDBRIDGE WHICH ROVERS WON 3-2 WITH A GOLDEN GOAL. THAT RESULT TOOK ROVERS BACK INTO THE FOOTBALL LEAGUE AFTER A FIVE YEAR ABSENCE. Green’s impact and his tendency to score important goals continued in 2003-04. He made 43 League appearances, scoring eight times, as Rovers swept their way to the Division Three title. He was one of the scorers as Rovers beat Cambridge United 2-0 at a packed Belle Vue to confirm promotion. He played a key part in Rovers’ run to the Quarter-finals of the League Cup in 2005-06 and he was a member of the team that won the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy at Cardiff in 2007. In 2007-08 he struggled to earn a regular place initially, Mark Wilson being preferred, but when he was restored to the team in December he helped transform their fortunes. Rovers reached the League One play-offs and Green was in the team that beat Leeds United in a dramatic final at Wembley in May 2008, securing a return to the second tier of English football for the first time in 50 years. That Wembley outing was to be his final game for Rovers. His contract had expired and he opted to join Derby County, ironically making his debut for them in August 2008 against Rovers, who won 1-0. He left with a record of 278 appearances and 34 goals and must be considered one of Rovers modern greats. He went on to be capped by the Republic of Ireland in 2010 and has won 22 caps, appearing at Euro 2012. He is still an active player and is currently with Crewe Alexandra. The man signed to replace him, JOHN SPICER (2008-09) had a disappointing 2008-09 but fared better when taking the No. 10 shirt the following season. Central defender JASON SHACKELL (2009-10), signed on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers, proved to be a classy performer and Rovers were interested in signing him permanently before he opted

to join Barnsley. OSCAR RADFORD (2011-12), a former Sheffield United youngster, joined Rovers from the unlikely source of Hungary’s Ferencvaros, but was unable to force his way into the first team. In 2012 manager Dean Saunders signed JAMES HARPER (2012-14), a midfielder who had made over 300 League appearances for Reading and had also played for Sheffield United and Hull City. Unfortunately he made little impact, although Rovers still succeeded in winning the League One championship on a dramatic final day. He left the club during the 2013-14 season and joined Barnet. His successor at No. 20 was Ivorian international defender ABDOULAYE MEITE (2014) who performed well after being signed to address a defensive crisis. However, he could not prevent Rovers slipping back into League One at the end of the 2013-14 season. Since then the No. 20 has been worn by Watford loanee UCHE IKPEAZU (2014-15), who rather flattered to deceive and two left-sided defenders. Firstly AARON TAYLORSINCLAIR (2015-17), whose time at Rovers was disrupted by a serious knee injury, and then by the current incumbent TYLER GARRATT (2017- date), currently on loan at AFC Wimbledon. It’s fair to say that no-one has quite matched Rovers’ first No. 20, Paul Green. JOHN COYLE

Hello everyone! Welcome to our evening game against Bristol Rovers. We recently had our first young fans panel, I have been looking through the ideas and they are brilliant. I am now working with my friends at the club to see what we can introduce. A big thank you to James for sending the photos of him with me and Erik the Viking.

Enjoy the game! Donny Dog DONCASTERROVERSFC.CO.UK

DONCASTER ROVERS

COMMERCIAL GOOD EVENING AND WELCOME BACK TO THE KEEPMOAT STADIUM. THINGS ARE HEATING UP IN SKY BET LEAGUE ONE AS WE ENTER THE FINAL STAGE OF THE SEASON, AND TONIGHT WE HOST BRISTOL ROVERS AS WE LOOK TO SECURE A PLAY-OFF SPOT.

Tonight’s visitors have impressive away form, though, bringing back all the spoils in four of their last six trips on the road. It’s back to business for Grant McCann’s side, who will be hoping that three points here tonight can set them up for a tough remainder of the season. We are delighted to welcome our main match sponsor and Official Partner, Stoneacre Motor Group. The UK based car dealership group, founded in 1994, is a family-owned business that has steadily evolved to become one of the UK’s fastest growing and most successful car dealers. Now with over 40 dealerships nationwide, Stoneacre offers an amazing range of nearly 200 new car models and more than 3,000 new and used cars from leading manufacturers such as Ford, Mazda, Vauxhall, Jeep, Suzuki, Fiat, Peugeot, Citroen and many more. We hope Stoneacre have a fantastic time with us here tonight in the Jibba Jabba Restaurant, and let’s hope we can get three points on the board. We are coming up to the end of the season now, but there are still a range of commercial opportunities to take advantage of until May

including matchday hospitality and sponsorships, which allow you to entertain clients or celebrate with friends If you would like further information on how to sponsor or advertise with Club Doncaster, or how to become one of our Official Partners, please contact the team on 01302 764665 /commercial@ clubdoncaster.co.uk.

SAFETY Three points is not the only priority today. Making sure everyone goes home safe is the most important result. Over recent months we have been working closely with the police and the EFL to review security at the Keepmoat Stadium. Now we are asking you to do your bit. It is vital that everyone - players, staff and supporters - remains vigilant and reports any concerns to stewards or police. Attacks might be rare, and the chance of you being caught up in one unlikely, but the message is ACT #ActionCountersTerrorism. Rovers safety officer Sam Ramsden said:

AD-105x148-Football Foundation.indd 1

"We want everyone to enjoy today’s game at the Keepmoat Stadium but if you see anything that causes you concern, tell a steward or staff member. Please do not worry that you might be wasting our time. "The stewards are here to help keep us all safe so please be patient and cooperate with their instructions. When it comes to security it has to be a team effort and we are all players." Here's a quick reminder of what you can do to help keep yourself and others safe: • Arrive early, allowing more time for security checks • Minimise what you carry, fewer bag searches will speed up entry to the ground

• Be vigilant at all times and if you see anything suspicious, tell a steward right away • If you see anything that could pose an immediate threat to safety, call 999 • In an emergency, listen to the public address instructions and follow them • If told to evacuate, do so immediately, do not wait around to film events on your mobile • Move right away from the stadium as quickly as possible for your safety and to allow clear access for any emergency vehicles • Once you are safe, follow the local police force on Twitter for updates To find out more, visit gov.uk/ACT or @TerrorismPolice

SUPPORTER LIAISON OFFICER DEAN MEDCALF GOOD EVENING LADIES AND GENTLEMEN AND A WARM WELCOME BACK TO THE KEEPMOAT STADIUM, AND A VERY WARM WELCOME TO ALL THE VISITING FANS FROM BRISTOL ROVERS.

I would like to thank all the Rovers fans who made the recent trips to Blackpool and Luton, I hope you all had a safe journey. I would like to discuss our recent FA Cup fifth-round match against Crystal Palace and share with you some of the feedback that myself and the club received from the visiting fans. As many of you may know, before and after each game, I communicate with the away clubs SLO and with the away fans on social media, forums and via email. Following all our home games, I ask the away fans for feedback on their experience visiting the Keepmoat Stadium and ask for any suggestions they may have on how the club could improve the match day experience for away fans. The feedback I received was

fantastic: all of the people I communicated with could not speak highly enough about their visit. A lot of the Palace fans had high praise for the Belle Vue Bar and about the warm welcome they received from the Rovers fans that were in there. The Rovers stewards were also praised for how welcome they made the Palace fans feel and how friendly and helpful they were throughout the visit. The atmosphere created by the Rovers fans was highly commended by the visiting fans and they were also very impressed with the organisation of the display in the Black Bank. On the football side, the Palace fans applauded the Rovers display on the pitch and they admired our style of play, with many of them

saying that if we continued to perform as well as we did that day then they would expect us to be up there at the end of the season. Many also said that they would be cheering on the Rovers and they would be supporting us in our push for the play-offs and wished us all the best for the rest of the season. As always I hope you all enjoy today’s game, if you have any questions then please contact me on the usual SLO social media accounts, @SLO_DRFC on twitter, DRFC SLO on Facebook or you can email me at dean.medcalf@ clubdoncaster.co.uk. VIKING SUPPORTERS CO-OPERATIVE Football is the national game, and football supporters are the lifeblood of the game. While many privately owned football clubs are well run, ours included, there are numerous examples over the years where this model of ownership has failed the supporters of that club, and has led to a number of clubs becoming either partly or fully owned by those supporters. The Minister Of Sport set up the Expert Working Group with the intention of looking at ways to improve engagement and dialogue between clubs and fans, and therefore to improve transparency and trust. The detailed recommendations from the EWG led to the government instructing the EFL and the Premier League to enter into structured dialogue with those supporters, and especially with the supporters trust at that club. As you may be aware the club hold two Meet The Owners events each year which meet the criteria set down by the EFL. On top of that the club have a Supporters Board which meets on a regular basis during the season to discuss a very broad range of topics. Suffice to say that DRFC have not only met the requirements but have exceeded them in both frequency and content, and that is something we can once again be proud of. Martin O'Hara

FOUNDATION UP

Club Doncaster Sports College celebrates its 10-year anniversary this month, with a number of events taking place to mark the occasion. Former students have been invited back to the Sports College before tonight’s game to reminisce about their experiences. The occasion acts as a great opportunity for the former students to catch up with old friends and staff while watching the football unfold, as well as seeing how the College has grown over the past decade. There is also a legends game planned for the summer, where former students can see if they still

have the ability and skills on the pitch which they showed during their College days. The College’s social media platforms will also be taking a trip down memory lane, with photos and videos of the students who have helped make the College the success it is today featuring heavily throughout. Chief executive of Club Doncaster, Gavin Baldwin, said: “The Sports College has been a huge success story for Club Doncaster. “It has grown rapidly over the past ten years and now has more than 150 students studying sport with us in our Stadium of Education. We are

already looking forward to the next 10 years.” The College offers Level 2 and Level 3 sport programmes for 16-19 year-olds, as well as a degree programme, which will see its first ever graduates in 2019. Football and Rugby Academies run alongside all courses and see teams compete in the EFL’s Community and Education Football Alliance Leagues and the Association of Colleges League. For more information on the tenyear anniversary and Club Doncaster Sports College, please visitwww. clubdoncastersportscollege.co.uk or call 01302 764663.

DATE Club Doncaster Foundation have been celebrating National Apprenticeship Week by highlighting the achievements of one outstanding apprentice per day. The Foundation’s apprenticeship scheme allows people interested in coaching and teaching from a variety of different backgrounds to gain experience without the pressure of attending higher education and National Apprenticeship week has given the Foundation the opportunity to raise awareness of the ongoing work of its apprentices and the impact they have in both schools and the wider community. Apprenticeships have, over time, become a suitable alternative to university studies, with many apprentices being able to gain valuable, practical work experience along with their studies. Mitch Barnett, for example, came through the Premier League Kicks programme and Coaching Academy before applying for an apprenticeship at the Foundation, while Maia Smith took up an apprenticeship after realising university was not for her. Recently the Foundation has seen its apprentices reap the rewards of hard work, with Josh Bucknall finishing runner-up for Apprentice of the Year at the Selby College Apprenticeship Awards, while Josh Gelder has now secured a full-time job after completing his apprenticeship in 2018. Apprentices are a credit to any organisation, as they set the foundation for a successful pathway for young people. Jordan Sheridan stated how the “experiences it has offered have been amazing.” To find out more about the work of the Club Doncaster Foundation, visit www. clubdoncasterfoundation.co.uk
