Print deadlines mean these notes were written before the Good Friday trip to Sunderland, but we headed into the Easter fixtures in good spirits after four straight wins. No one at the club is taking things for granted, and we’ll be giving our all in these final games of the regular season to ensure we make the play-offs and go into them with some momentum. I know we were expecting a good following at Sunderland on Good Friday, and your fantastic backing of us has been a real theme of the season right from the opening day of the campaign at Southend United back in August. That can really help us in the final few games.

really pleasing thing is the players who have come into the side to cover injuries or suspensions have really stepped up. We've still got players to come back like Tom Anderson, Joe Wright and Ian Lawlor and the young boys are pushing for places too. It really is appreciated by everyone at the club and can make a difference in these final few matches of the regular season - and the three further games we hope to have.

I would like to congratulate Doncaster RLFC on their Challenge Cup win over Batley Bulldogs, which set them up for an amazing last-16 tie at holders Catalans Dragons. The game is the same weekend we hope Rovers are playing in the first leg of a play-off semi-final, so it could be a memorable few days for Club Doncaster and local sport. Enjoy the game.

K I L L A M S K L I W MALLIK WILKS HAS BEEN A REVELATION SINCE JOINING ROVERS ON A SEASON-LONG LOAN FROM LEEDS UNITED LAST SUMMER. Before the Good Friday fixture at Sunderland, Wilks had scored 16 goals in all competitions and become an integral part of Grant McCann’s side. “When I first signed and came into training I knew it was a good squad and we could fight for promotion,” he says. “From the day I arrived I clicked with people and they all made me feel welcome, it’s a great group of lads and we’ve got the best out of each other all season long. “The gaffer brought me in and made things easy for me, he explained what he wanted from me with the system he likes to play. “The whole football club is very comfortable to be at and there is a family feel, which is something I wanted. “I appreciated his belief in me, in League Two last season I was in and out of the team no matter how well I was playing. “Grant has faith in me and trusts me to do a job on the field, so for me it’s about taking that into my game and building my confidence.”

After making the perfect start to life in a Rovers shirt with goals in his first three appearances for the club, Wilks has gone from strength to strength.

“It means a lot to us because we know how hard the fans work to be able to afford to come to watch us home and away,” he says.

As the season has progressed, the 20-year-old has found a good level of consistency in his game, with eight of his goals coming since he extended his loan spell at the turn of the year.

“Our performances and where we are in the table is what they deserve, it’s about us giving something back to them.

“I was nervous in my first few games but I got a few goals early on and I don’t think defenders knew what to expect from me,” he says. “When things are falling for you it’s easier to try more things on the pitch, we have developed as the season has gone on. “I feel like I always have an option when I’m on the ball, I love to run at people and take them on with my pace. “I know it’s hard for anyone to knock me out of my stride, the Rochdale game on New Year’s Day was one of my favourites so far. “From the first minute I felt good and got an assist early on, I carried it on and every time I got the ball I wanted to be positive.” Wilks’ performances on the pitch have seen him strike up a good relationship with the Rovers’ fans that watch him every week. Hearing his name being sung at the Keepmoat Stadium brings out the best in him, and gives him an extra spring in his step.

“The song made me laugh and I thrive on that sort of thing, when I score I run over to them and it’s great to see them cheering. “The fans give it their all and travel up and down the country, wherever we’re playing they travel in their numbers.

I think having the fans on side has been one of the reasons why we’ve been very good at home as well, we’ve put a lot of results together and taken momentum from every win. “At this club we rarely lose back to back games, we always show a reaction and that is something we take pride in.” As well as developing as a player, Wilks believes he has matured as a person with the help of the people around him. Still one of the younger players in the squad, he says he has learnt to put his trust in people who have his best interests at heart. “The older lads helped me and being in and around them made me grow up quicker seeing how they go about things,” says Wilks. “When I was younger at Leeds I wouldn’t do things that I’m doing here, now I’m focused on playing well and looking after myself. “I like to have banter with the lads but I’ve learnt now to have it at the right times, because I know how important it is to work hard.

"THE THOUGHT OF PLAYING AT WEMBLEY IS WHAT WE’RE ALL STRIVING FOR, IT’S EVERY YOUNG KIDS’ DREAM AND WE KNOW WE CAN DO IT" “People around my age in the group all like to have a laugh and a joke but we show good maturity when we need to. “I’ve developed massively as a person, I feel more mature with my character and I’m much friendlier with different people. “Being here has allowed me to open up more and put my trust in people because I know they’re here to help me. “It can help me not only in my career but in my day to day life, I like to chat to people but it’s not always something I’ve been able to do.” With Rovers and Wilks’ parent club Leeds both in good positions in their respective leagues, it could be a double celebration for him come the end of the season. His focus though is helping Rovers get into the top six in Sky Bet League One, and then looking to finish the job with the potential of a trip to Wembley at the end of May. “It’s a good situation to be in with Leeds and Rovers doing well, my priority is making sure we get in the play-offs and kick on from there,” he adds. “It would be life changing if we can get into the Championship, we’re all aware of how big an achievement it would be. “The thought of playing at Wembley is what we’re all striving for, it’s every young kids’ dream and we know we can do it. “I’m still young so to do it early in my career would be good for me, it’s something that stays with you forever.”

FOUR TO ACCRINGTON STANLEY

JONNY MAXTED TOP STOPPER

The 25-year-old is a product of the Rovers youth academy, having spent a number of years here at the Keepmoat Stadium. Initially starting out in non-league with Collingham and hometown side Tadcaster Albion, Maxted was picked up by Rovers and signed his first professional contract in 2012. He would then spend time on loan at Goole and Gainsborough Trinity, before a permanent move to Hartlepool United. Time with Forest Green Rovers followed, as did a return to Yorkshire with Guiseley, and he played a key part in the Lions run to the second round of the FA Cup in November 2017, with his penalty shoot-out heroics against Accrington then earning him a move to the Wham Stadium the following January. He made his Stanley debut towards the end of last season, keeping a clean sheet in a 1-0 win at home to Notts County.

SEAN McCONVILLE MIDFIELD MAESTRO

The attacking midfielder is in his second spell with Stanley following a stint between 2009 and 2011. He was picked up by Accrington following time in non-league with Skelmersdale United, making 76 appearances in the league over his two seasons there before his move to Stockport County. McConville would join Barrow in 2012 enjoying a season in Cumbria, before a season each with Stalybridge Celtic and Chester. McConville would make his return to league football with Stanley in 2015, helping them to the League Two play-off semi-finals in his first season, before scoring 12 goals last season as Stanley won the League Two title in the last campaign. Following last seasonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s success, McConville was also named in the 2017/18 League Two Team of the Year after his superb form.

O WATCH MARK HUGHES DEFENSIVE ROCK

The experienced centre-half came through the ranks at Everton before signing for Northampton Town in 2007. Hughes would spend two years at Sixfields before a move to Walsall in 2009. After a season with the Saddlers, Hughes’ next move would be to Australia’s A League, signing a contract with North Queensland Fury, winning their Player of the Year, Fans’ Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year awards in his only season with the club. A return to England in 2011 saw him spend two seasons with Bury, also enjoying a brief loan spell with Accrington in 2013. Time with Morecambe and Stevenage would follow his departure from Gigg Lane, before a return to Stanley midway through the 2015/16 season. He would help them to promotion as League Two champions last season, playing every league game for John Coleman’s men in their title-winning campaign.

BILLY KEE DEADLY STRIKER

The forward has been one of the EFL’s most prolific goal scorers in recent seasons. Kee began his career with Leicester City, though he would make his professional debut in a loan spell with Stanley in 2009. A permanent move to Torquay United in 2010 would follow, quickly becoming a fan favourite at Plainmoor during his time with the Gulls, also playing for the Northern Ireland under-21 side whilst with Torquay. Kee would then move on to Burton Albion in 2011, spending three years at the Pirelli Stadium before his switch to Scunthorpe United. It would be a permanent return to the Wham Stadium though where Kee would find his feet again, being a part of the side that reached the League Two play-off semi-finals in 2016. Last season would be Kee’s best in professional football, scoring 25 goals as Stanley raced to the League Two title, with Kee also winning the Player of the Year award for the division.

TWO PLAYERS CURRENTLY PLAYING HERE AT THE KEEPMOAT STADIUM MAKE UP THE CONNECTIONS BETWEEN THESE TWO SIDES, WITH JOE WRIGHT THE FIRST TO PLAY FOR BOTH TEAMS. Wright began his career with Huddersfield Town, coming up through the youth ranks at the West Yorkshire side after joining them at under-16 level in 2010, before signing his first professional contract there three years later. He featured regularly on the bench for the Terriers during his early years there after signing his deal, signing an extension in 2015 for a further year, though it wouldn’t be long before he made his first move away from the John Smith’s Stadium. Wright would join Accrington Stanley on loan during the summer of 2015, spending a full season at the Wham Stadium, making his debut in a 1-1 draw with Luton Town in August. Wright went on to play 20 games in the league as Stanley made the League Two play-offs in 2016, losing out to eventual play-off winners AFC Wimbledon after a twolegged semi-final. The central defender, who also made two appearances for the Welsh under-21 side in 2015, would make a permanent move to Rovers following a successful season with Accrington, as he looked to help Rovers to promotion back to League One at the first attempt. He made his debut in the League Cup defeat at home to Nottingham Forest and he consolidated his place in the side for the first half of the season, going on to make 27 appearances in all competitions as Rovers were promoted from League Two after a 1-0 win over Mansfield Town in which he featured. Wright became a mainstay in the Rovers’ backline last season upon their third-tier return, forging a good partnership with Andy Butler before injuries in both February and March curtailed his progress. Wright scored his first league goal for the club in a 3-0 win over Wycombe Wanderers in the first home game of the season, scoring again in a 2-1 defeat away at Coventry City, and he was rewarded for his good start to the 2018/19 season with a contract extension until the summer of 2021 at the very least. Another connection who has enjoyed his time at both clubs comes in the form of MALLIK WILKS, who has spent the duration of this season on loan from Leeds United.

ISSUE 27 v ACCRINGTON STANLEY

Wilks made his Leeds debut in the FA Cup in January 2017, just a few weeks after signing his first professional contract at Elland Road, though the following season would see him sent out on loan to Accrington. He introduced himself in the best way possible, scoring a 95th-minute equaliser on debut away at Notts County in August 2017, and going on to score five goals in 23 appearances for Stanley, earning a championship medal following their League Two title win last season. He would spend the second half of the last campaign on loan at Grimsby Town, however injury saw him make just six appearances for the Mariners. Wilks joined Rovers ahead of the start of this season, and he has gone on to be one of the star performers in the charge for the League One play-offs. He started superbly, scoring three goals in his first three games, all in wins against Southend United, Wycombe and Scunthorpe United, as well as winning multiple Man of the Match awards as voted by the fans throughout the course of the campaign. He scored his 15th goal of the season in March’s 3-1 win at home to Walsall with a trademark Wilks’ finish, weaving his way down the right-hand side before shooting with his left, and he looks set to play a big part for Rovers as they head towards the biggest stage of the season so far. MEMORABLE MATCH ACCRINGTON STANLEY

FEBRUARY 25 2017

Rovers played out a second draw in a row at home to Accrington Stanley, with both sides having great chances to win the game, however a late goal from the visitors would see both walk away from the Keepmoat Stadium with a point. It would be the visitors who had the brighter start of the two, taking the lead after just four minutes. Conor Grant was dispossessed by Jordan Clark in the opposition half, and he played the ball across to Shay McCartan. McCartan ran from inside his own box towards the edge of the penalty area, taking the ball past Andy Butler before slotting the ball into the far corner beyond Ian Lawlor to give Stanley the lead. Alfie May, on his full debut, and John Marquis both had shots blocked by the Accrington defence in what was a very quick start to the game, and just before the 20-minute mark, Rovers would find themselves level. Grant’s ball into the box was met by Tommy Rowe, and he looped the ball over Marek Rodak at the second attempt to put Rovers on level terms. After the interval, Lawlor had to be alert to keep McCartan at bay, with the Accrington man striking from distance; the Irishman was at his best to tip the ball behind from a corner, with the ball looking destined to hit the back of the net. Rovers took confidence from this, and

with a swift counter of their own, they took the lead on the hour. Matty Blair won the ball down the right, playing it forward to James Coppinger who swung the ball across to May. May flicked the ball into the path of Marquis, with the striker taking his time to compose himself before slotting into Rodak’s near post to hand the home side the lead. Rowe and Coppinger could have put the game out of sight, with the pair

both flashing chances just wide of the post, and with 10 minutes to go, they would be left to rue their missed opportunities. Stanley’s Clark swung a free kick into the area that was headed on by Matty Pearson, tapped in on the line by Jonathan Edwards, ensuring that both sides would share the points, despite Rowe being one-on-one with Rodak in injury time and poking the ball just wide, but Rovers maintained their unbeaten run at home in the league.

WHAT HAPPENED NEXT? Rovers would go on to win four of their next five games, including a 3-1 win at home to Notts County and a 4-1 win away at Leyton Orient. The unbeaten home run would come to an end against Plymouth Argyle at the end of March, but in their next home game they would seal promotion to League One with a 1-0 win at home to Mansfield Town. Rovers would finish in third place in League Two, narrowly missing out on the title on the final day, losing 2-1 away at Hartlepool United, but an instant return to the third tier would be seen as a success at the Keepmoat. For Accrington, the 2-2 draw would come in the middle of a brilliant end of season run that would see them pull away from the bottom end of the table, losing just two of their final 17 games, finally finishing in 13th after being 22nd on Boxing Day. Last season would be very successful for Stanley, as they were crowned League Two champions, finishing five points clear of nearest challengers Luton Town. Billy Kee was a standout performer for Stanley, scoring 25 goals in the league and going on to win the League Two Player of the Year.

THE

NUMBERS GAME THE NO. 23 SHIRT HAS HAD ONLY SEVEN OWNERS SINCE ROVERS INTRODUCED SQUAD NUMBERS IN 2002. PERHAPS IT IS BECAUSE THE NO. 23 IN SPORT HAS TAKEN ON AN ICONIC QUALITY SINCE IT WAS WORN FIRST BY BASKETBALL LEGEND MICHAEL JORDAN AND THEN BY DAVID BECKHAM, WHEN HE JOINED REAL MADRID FROM MANCHESTER UNITED IN 2003. AT LEAST A COUPLE OF ROVERS’ WEARERS OF THE SHIRT MIGHT BE ABLE TO CLAIM LEGENDARY STATUS TOO. One of those was the first wearer of the shirt, central defender STEVE FOSTER (2003-06). Foster had experience at Mansfield Town, Telford United, Woking and Bristol Rovers and it was from the last named club that he joined Rovers in August 2002, initially on a short-term deal. His impressive performances soon earned him a long-term contract and he became a key member of Dave Penney’s side which won back-to-back promotions. Foster played in the Conference Play-Off Final at Stoke in May 2003 when Rovers beat Dagenham and Redbridge 3-2 with Francis Tierney’s Golden Goal. The following season, with Rovers back in the Football League after a five-year absence, Foster played 44 League games as Rovers secured the Division Three title. In total he made 134 appearances for Rovers, but his time at the club ended abruptly in January 2006 when he was released by mutual consent to join Scunthorpe United. The No. 23 was not vacant for long, as JASON PRICE (2006-09) joined from Hull City just after Foster’s departure. He soon gained a cult following among fans for his hairstyle and all-action play. Price earned legendary status in February 2007 when he scored a last-minute goal as Rovers beat Crewe Alexandra to reach the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Final. The final itself, played at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium, was a bitter-sweet occasion for Price. He helped Rovers overcome Bristol Rovers 3-2 in extra time to lift the trophy but he sustained a snapped Achilles tendon which kept him out of action for some time. Nevertheless he returned to action in the 2007-08 season and his seven League goals helped Rovers reach the League One play-offs. Price featured in the 1-0 Wembley win over Leeds United that took Rovers up to the second tier of English football for the first time in 50

years. His time at Rovers was drawing to a close and after a loan spell there he joined Millwall at the start of the 2009-10 season. Price’s successor was a player who appeared to have potential for greatness. KYLE BENNETT (2011-15) joined Rovers at a difficult time and soon saw the man who signed him, manager Sean O’Driscoll, lose his job. Bennett was part of the side relegated from the Championship after four seasons at the end of 2011-12, but he started the following season’s League One campaign in excellent form, scoring in the first two League games. However, Bennett scored only one more League goal that season. Bennett missed most of the 2013-14 season through injury before enjoying his best season with Rovers in 2014-15, playing a total of 50 games and scoring eight goals. He opted to move on to Portsmouth at the end of the season, his potential largely unfulfilled. Since then the shirt has been worn for a season apiece by goalkeeper MARKO MAROSI (2015-16) and ALFIE BEESTIN (2016-17) before passing to its current wearer ALEX KIWOMYA (2017date). The pacy young striker has not enjoyed the best of fortune since joining Rovers from Chelsea, missing much of the 2017-18 season with a serious illness and then spending most of this season on loan at Chesterfield. Over recent months we have been working closely with the police and the EFL to review security at the Keepmoat Stadium. Now we are asking you to do your bit. It is vital that everyone - players, staff and supporters - remains vigilant and reports any concerns to stewards or police. Attacks might be rare, and the chance of you being caught up in one unlikely, but the message is ACT #ActionCountersTerrorism. Rovers safety officer Sam Ramsden said:

At our recent home game against Walsall, Rovers hosted our annual Junior Takeover Day which is always a highlight of the season. For the second time, we had a junior supporter liaison officer as Lucy and her dad joined me for the day. The day started with members of the Rovers staff being introduced to their junior staff member and once I had met Lucy, we headed off for a chat to discuss what the SLO role was and what our day would include. We then took to twitter to post a welcome message to the

The Minister Of Sport set up the Expert Working Group with the intention of looking at ways to improve engagement and dialogue between clubs and fans, and therefore to improve transparency and trust. The detailed recommendations from the EWG led to the government instructing the EFL and the Premier League to enter into structured dialogue with those supporters, and especially with the supporters trust at that club. As you may be aware the club hold two Meet The Owners events each year which meet the criteria set down by the EFL. On top of that the club have a Supporters Board which meets on a regular basis during the season to discuss a very broad range of topics. Suffice to say that DRFC have not only met the requirements but have exceeded them in both frequency and content, and that is something we can once again be proud of. Martin O'Hara

FOUNDATION UP Club Doncaster Foundation took a team of Kicks participants to the University of Warwick for the Premier League Kicks Cup on Monday April 8. The players, who represented Rovers, took part in an under 16s six-a-side tournament, facing off against some of the best teams in the UK.  The latest staging of the competition had more than 700 young people representing 65 professional football clubs coming together to play football and form friendships.

Fit Rovers have made an exceptional start to the Club Doncaster boot drive which aims to provide boots to a local refugee football team by donating more than 50 pairs of AstroTurf trainers and football boots in one evening. The Fit Rovers vets have joined Doncaster Rovers and the Club Doncaster Foundation in supporting local football team Doncaster Conversation Club United (DCC United), which was set up to give asylum seekers and refugees access to team sports in Doncaster. As well as donating their own unused shoes, Fit Rovers have hosted a boot drive and will continue to do so at Rovers’ remaining Saturday home match against Coventry City on the final day of the regular season. Supporters have been encouraged to join the boot drive and help out where

possible. The Fit Rovers vets will be based at each of the four corners of the stadium on the above date and will provide drop-off points for supporters to donate AstroTurf trainers and football boots. Asylum seekers are granted a stay in the country while their case is looked at, if their case is approved, they will then reach refugee status, but this can take years. Asylum seekers are not allowed to work and are given just £35 a week to live on, these conditions make it very difficult for people to enjoy playing and taking part in sport. Club Doncaster Foundation staff recognise the positive role that football can play in maintaining physical and mental health and helping with social integration. A number of partnerships between Club Doncaster Foundation and DCC United have been established to help with this.

Teams from across the UK featured, including Manchester United, Liverpool and Newcastle United. The Doncaster Kicks side faced off against Hull City, Crystal Palace, Blackburn Rovers, Manchester United and Stoke City, securing victory over Hull and pushing Palace all the way in an entertaining draw. Palace went on to contest the final, losing out narrowly to Watford. As well as the action on the pitch, there were plenty of other activities for the young people to take part in. Freestyle world champion Liv Cooke was on hand to show the skills that led to her claiming the Freestyle Football World title and encouraged other players to join in. Sport development officer at the Foundation Mark Cooper said: “The entire event was a great experience for our team. They really enjoyed it and had the chance to test themselves against some really good Premier League sides. “A huge thank you to the Premier League for allowing young people to take part in events like this.”
