Darren Ferguson Good afternoon and welcome back to the Keepmoat Stadium for the visit of Colchester United. I’d like to welcome manager John McGreal, the players, staff and directors of the visitors. This is our third home game in little over two weeks, and there is some real momentum building. We are unbeaten at home in Sky Bet League Two this season and that is earning us respect from other teams – you saw that with Barnet last Saturday.

Everyone has a real desire to win. We showed that at Portsmouth, where we went on the back of a loss at Luton and draw here with Carlisle. We went to Fratton Park with a real belief, a complete determination we were going to win – and that belief will stand us in good stead for the rest of the season. Enjoy the game

The long throw from Sam Muggleton was something I have never come up against before – it was unplayable at times. No matter where the ball went off the pitch, it came back into the box – on reflection, we actually dealt with it well. I hope Barnet play like that against some of the teams around us in the table, because if they do then they are sure to pick up some points.

Three great goals won us the game. It was probably, because the way the game transpired, the best three points of the season. Our fans will have gone home happy and conversation afterwards will have been about the last-minute winner from Andy Williams. It got a bit scrappy in the second-half and we had to work hard, but it was a deserved win.

Gavin Baldwin Welcome back to the Keepmoat Stadium. I’d like to extend a warm welcome to the fans, directors, players and staff of Colchester United. Last Saturday’s win over Barnet showed the character in our side in standing up to the aerial bombardment that was the long throw and winning the game in injury time; it certainly made Darren proud and showed that the team will not give up when trying to win games for the fans.

The aim is to do something unique to Doncaster Rovers that our players look forward to and that intimidates opposition players every week to turn as many results in our favour as possible, we will be in touch with details as soon as we are able. That was our third victory in a row and the results we have produced despite an injury list as long as my arm has been incredible, and a lot of that has been down to the composed way young players have come into

We have two more additions to the youth ranks on the pitch before today’s game. Cameron Barnett and Brandon Horton will be signing on under apprentice terms. Both have been on our books for some time – Cameron has been with us for six years – and we all look forward to following their progress. I’d like to remind you that Rovers season ticket holders can get a discount on ticket prices for the England Woman’s international against France on 21st October meaning you pay just £5. There are also discounts for group bookings and Charter Standard football clubs – these are all available via our Box Office on 01302 762576. We also recently confirmed our Big Bang on 4th November will be back for a seventh consecutive year here at the Keepmoat Stadium. Last year’s was the best yet and we are confident of improving on that this time round. You can also buy in advance via the Box office on the above number. Enjoy the game

Gavin

07 Chief Executives Comments

There was a collective air around the ground in the last five minutes that we would find a way of winning and that was largely as a result of your efforts to bring the team home. Such was the difference made by the fans and the noise that was generated that we are hoping to explore with the Supporters Board and the Black Bank how we can make the last 5 minutes of every game extra special.

the team. Those of you who have seen our Checkatrade Trophy games will have seen first hand just how well our academy is doing – 14 of the 18 players in the matchday squad against Derby County were under 21 and five were current youth team players.

The Health and Wellbeing department of Club Doncaster Foundation are delighted to sponsor the College Academy football sides for the 2016/17 season. Donating a generous heap of training kit and equipment, the department have given the squads a great incentive to reach their targets as well as forging a vital link between themselves and education. The new female side, which have been introduced this year, were the first to compete for prizes in one of their training sessions run alongside their studies at the Keepmoat Stadium. England youth international and Club Doncaster Sports College student Beth O’Donnell plays in the College Academy side and says that the incentive of rewards means so much more than just the buzz of winning. “The prizes are great because there’s a reward for all your hard work but also it will inspire other girls to come and join the team too when they see how high quality the stuff is,” she said. “It’s hard to get girls involved with football, I’ve grown up with not many other girls around me playing the sport so we need to do everything we can to change that.” Club Doncaster Community Officer for Health and Wellbeing Nick Gillott has shaped the sponsorship and believes it will benefit both sides. “We as a Foundation want to make sure that we have excellent links between all our key areas and by offering this sponsorship it does just that for Education and Health and Wellbeing, “ he said. “It is important that the players and students are rewarded for their achievements throughout the year. They work so hard both in the classroom and on the pitch so it’s great that they know it’s not going unnoticed.” He added, “The sponsorship of course is also a way of promoting our Health and Wellbeing project to a younger audience. It is vital we drill home the importance of keeping the mind and body healthy at a young age. “I think it could also recruit potential volunteers and Health and Wellbeing ambassadors, which would be great to get them involved.” For more information on Health and Wellbeing visit www.clubdoncasterfoundation.co.uk

Foundation AMBASSADORS Rovers player Matty Blair is delighted to become the new Girls/Women’s football ambassador, just in time for FA Girls’ football week which concludes this weekend

“I think it is so important to give something back given the powerful position footballers’ have and hopefully we can build a great relationship to help the projects thrive.”

As part of his new role the winger will support female football across Doncaster and become the main face at any events run within the theme.

John Marquis becomes the ambassador for Health while Niall Mason is the face of Social Inclusion, Prince’s Trust and National Citizen Service. Also an ambassador for National Citizen Service is Joe Pugh, who also joins Prince’s Trust.

The role pairs perfectly with the FA Girls’ football week - a project used to engage with females across the country to encourage them to get involved with the sport - which concludes this weekend.

He joins seven other Rovers’ players who have become player ambassadors for their club for a variety of projects. Andy Butler becomes the ambassador for Sports Participation and Education. He said: “I’m delighted to support Sports Participation and Education by becoming an ambassador.

Club Doncaster Foundation are delighted with the enthusiasm from the players and Coordinator for Women and Girls’ sport, Heather King says the support cannot be underestimated. She said: “Having the support from the Football Club with the ambassadors for this project means a great deal. “It really helps in getting the word around in Doncaster, and having the support of the whole club is a great way of getting more girls involved."

09 Box Office: 01302 762576

Blair said: “I’m proud to be an ambassador for Girls/Women’s football; the growth of the sport has been massive these last few years and by supporting it, we hope to grow it even further.”

Cedric Evina and Joey McCormick share the responsibility for Kick it Out and Show Racism the Red Card, while Andy Williams is the ambassador for Equalities, Disability and Charities.

Jordan HOUGHTON MADE AT CHELSEA Jordan Houghton leans across the table and grins. Sporting a black eye from the punishing tussles of the League Two engine rooms, he anticipates our first question. And, it’s not until you get close to the twenty-year old, that you begin to appreciate his immaculate pearly whites. They’re reminiscent of his midfield play; neat, tidy but durable. The Chelsea loanee – who has been with the club for over thirteen years now – accepts representing his boyhood club at first team level is one challenge

even he may not be able to complete without suffering.

Box Office: 01302 762576

“I’ve got to be realistic and I know it’s a near on impossible task to do but it doesn’t mean I’m not giving it everything when I’m out on loan or training. You want to make it to the first team, that’s the aim,” he says. “Ruben is doing it at the moment and it’s hard to compare because he’s a slightly different position but that’s the aim at the end of the day. “I think looking at Ruben, he’s the highlight and same age group as me. There’s only me and him left from our age group at Chelsea but he’s made that step in to the first team and hopefully he can get some more minutes because he deserves it and when he has played he merits more minutes.” Casually namechecked by Houghton, Ruben is England U21’s starlet Ruben Loftus-Cheek; a highly rated midfielder who has become a reference point for many that bemoan a stockpiling of young talent in Premier League and the limited opportunities which have forced close to 40 players out of Stamford Bridge on loan.

Another youngster in the U’s ranks, who has been with the club all the way through the youth system. The energetic forward broke into the squad during pre-season ahead of the 2013/14 season and appeared eight times as a substitute in that campaign. Having signed a three year contract last season, Sammie went on to be a regular in the first team in 2014/15, before he spent time out on loan at Braintree Town in the 2015/16 season. He missed the latter part of the campaign with injury, so will be chomping at the bit to make an impression this season.

John was appointed First Team Coach in charge of the senior side in May 2016. He brings with him vast experience of the professional game, having enjoyed a 17 year playing career with Tranmere Rovers, Ipswich Town and Burnley, playing over 400 games before hanging up his boots in 2007. Joining the U's in 2009 as part of the coaching staff at the club, he progressed to become U21s manager. An uncompromising centre half, John has brought that defensive nous to his role in the U's academy. His coaching has also helped provide a springboard into senior football for a number of the U's academy graduates and the last couple of years have seen the likes of Frankie Kent, Tom Lapslie, Kane Vincent-Young, Sammie Szmodics, Macauley Bonne, Cameron James, Femi Akinwande and Louis Dunne all make their first team break through.

Tom joined the U's from near neighbours Ipswich Town on a free transfer in May 2011 and went on to enjoy a fantastic first season. The switch to the U's was to prove to be a great decision by the young centre half, who romped home to win the Young Player of the Year award with some outstanding performances at the back. The 2013/14 season saw him continue his progress, winning the Player of the Year title as he became a mainstay in the U’s defence, and he completed a hat-trick of awards when he won the Player of the Year title for the second season running after an ever present campaign in 2014/15. He has now played over 200 games for Colchester at the heart of the defence and will be aiming to add to that total this season.

LEGEND

Gregg, with nine international caps while playing for the club, is third of all time international appearance makers while with Rovers behind South Africa’s Dean Furman (17 caps) and Northern Ireland’s Len Graham (14 caps). A terrific goalkeeper who played 99 times in all for Rovers, he made a £23,000 move to Manchester United as the most expensive stopper in the world and a year later would be named the best ‘keeper at the 1958 World Cup! Alongside his former Rovers teammate Graham, Gregg was ranked higher than Lev Yashin of Russia.

Hello everyone, Welcome to our game against Colchester United. When we played Derby County ( October4) I went up to the Legends Lounge and had a few photographs. The food looked tasty, so no wonder nobody shared with me! At the end of the game I bumped into the players from Doncaster Belles and they gave me a really big cheer (thanks ladies and good luck in your remaining games).

Rovers youth team inflicted a first defeat of the season on their Notts County counterparts last Saturday, running out comfortable winners. After a scrappy start to the game Rovers took control with some good passages of play, culminating in a 2-0 half-time lead with goals from Reece Fielding and Lewis Scattergood. Coaches Paul Stancliffe and John Schofield made use of the half time interval to remind the players of the need to build consistency in their performances and to build on the control they had earned via their first half performance. An excellent finish by one of two trialists in the team gave Rovers a 3-0 lead before Notts County scored what turned out to be a consolation. Another goal for a trialist gave Rovers a very comfortable and fully deserved 4-1 victory. Academy Manager Kieran Scarff said: “The players gave a good account of themselves and retained good control of the game throughout. After playing so well the week before and losing so unfortunately it was great that the boys got the result their performance deserved. The challenge for them individually and collectively is to continue to strive for improvement. The youth team are back in action when they travel to Accrington in the final group game of the opening stages of the Youth Alliance Cup on Saturday October 22 (KO 11am). All four teams in the group are level on three points so it has all the makings of an exciting finish to the group stages of the competition.

THE RECORD BREAKERS: DONCASTER ROVERS 70 YEARS AGO. Part 7 - By John Coyle

50

On Saturday November 2nd 1946 Rovers travelled to Darlington in search of a club and Football League record. Never before had a team won seven away games on the trot and the victory at York a fortnight earlier had been the sixth away win in succession by Jackie Bestall’s side. Bestall was able to name an unchanged team at Feethams as follows:

Box Office: 01302 762576

Archie Ferguson; Ernie Swallow, Jim Wooldridge; Cecil Stirland, Sid Bycroft, Bob McFarlane; Jackie Kirkaldie, Jackie Thompson, Clarrie Jordan, Paul Todd, Ralph Maddison. Rovers began in the style that their position as league leaders suggested and could have built up a healthy lead before they scored. Jordan had a shot cleared off the line, Todd saw a header

ruled out for pushing and Kirkaldie lifted the ball over an open goal. After 38 minutes skipper Todd finally put them in front from close range, and this goal looked to have sealed the game until Darlington equalised in controversial fashion three minutes from time. In fading light, Varty turned in a shot from close range and despite appeals from the Rovers defence that he was in an offside position, the goal stood. So Rovers had surrendered their 100 per cent away record, and, although they were upset about the circumstances of the home side’s goal, they really had to blame some uncharacteristically poor finishing for the loss of a point. Maybe the solution lay close to home, because while Rovers’ forwards were misfiring in the North East, back in Doncaster 16-year-old Gordon Turner was banging in 20 goals as YMCA beat the Methodist Youth 32-0 in a Youth League game. Clearly back in 1946 it was fun to play for the YMCA. Rovers’ visit to Darlington had attracted a crowd of 9,989, a ground record at the time, to Feethams and a big gate was anticipated a week later when Rovers

Victory over Hull meant that Rovers maintained a two point lead over Chester, then seen as their nearest challengers. The Cheshire side had only drawn at Bradford City, although Rotherham United, with games in hand over their rivals, were emerging as a danger following a good victory at Barrow. With only the champions being promoted from Division Three North, Rovers’ excellent record of 25 points from 14 games with only three dropped was no guarantee of eventual glory.

Box Office: 01302 762576

faced Hull City. An excursion was laid on for Hull supporters and it was estimated that around 1,500 made the relatively short journey west. In the end, a crowd of 17,626, the best of the season to date assembled at Belle Vue. They saw an unchanged Rovers side get straight into their work. After four minutes Todd and Maddison combined to set up Kirkaldie who put Rovers ahead. Five minutes later, Jordan, who otherwise had a quiet game, scored a spectacular goal, letting fly while on the run and beating the visiting goalkeeper Hannaby all ends up. Then on the quarter-hour, Kirkaldie made it three after being set up by Todd. Rovers could have been further ahead by the break, but Thompson had a goal disallowed for an infringement. The home side continued to dominate matters in the second half and it came as a surprise when Hull’s Chadwick made it 3-1 with a goal twelve minutes from the end. However Maddison then restored the three goal margin, squeezing a shot under the diving Hannaby, and Kirkaldie was only denied a hat-trick by an offside flag. Rovers had enjoyed a comprehensive win and put the disappointments of Darlington well behind them.

Doncaster

BELLES

Manager Emma Coates revealed plans are already in place for next season and the future of the Belles continues to shine brightly.

Belles future is bright SAYS BOSS COATES

remains optimistic about the future of Doncaster's historic women's football club. And with the format of the women's game reverting to a winter league as opposed to a summer version next year, the Belles boss has plenty of time to work with her troops and get ready for the 2017 campaign. "It’s important next season to have that time to shape the squad," said 25-year-old Coates. "I’ll be working hard now to prepare for the future. We’ll get it right in the Spring Series [FA WSL's 2017 pre-season tournament] to ensure we hit the ground running."

52 Box Office: 01302 762576

Despite the defeat to the travelling Reds, Coates added: "I was happy with how we started the game. "I thought we were in control for the first half an hour but I was disappointed we didn’t manage the game better when we were 1-0 up. A much-improved performance last weekend saw Doncaster go 1-0 up against Liverpool Ladies following a superb Rhiannon Roberts header. a stunning comeback from the Reds - which included a sublime brace from Caroline Weir and Natasha Harding's pinpoint curling strike - helped Scott Rogers' side secure a 3-1 victory at the Keepmoat Stadium. Despite another Belles setback in what has been a tough return to FA WSL 1 football, Coates

"It’s the story of the season for us, we lacked that efficiency, they [Liverpool] were very fluid in attack and we were quite predictable." The Belles have the chance to get their first points on the board in their final home match against Notts County on Sunday, October 16, kick-off 2pm. Rovers Family Doncaster Rovers Supporters Club A warm welcome to all the Colchester fans who have made the trip up the A1 from Essex for todays’ game, they are a team we have crossed paths with over the past few seasons, Hope the fans have an enjoyable day with us at the Keepmoat, but let’s kick on and get three points. The victory at Portsmouth, their first home defeat of the season, was one of ourmost exciting games for years. It felt a bit like the Alamo in the last 20 mins, and how Andy Butler back heeled the ball of the line was amazing. Our bus had the joy of having Buseoke (karaoke on a bus) on the journey home… for nearly three-and-a-half hours. It’s away days like this that make it all worthwhile!

54 Box Office: 01302 762576

community supporters club shop situated in the community changing room area, (North Stand) Rovers till we die Paul Mayfield Viking Supporters Co-Operative Football is the national game, and football supporters are the lifeblood of the game. While many privately owned football clubs are well run, ours included, there are numerous examples over the years where this model of ownership has failed the supporters of that club, and has led to a number of clubs becoming either partly or fully owned by those supporters. Recently the Minister Of Sport set up the Expert Working Group with the intention of looking at ways to improve engagement and dialogue between clubs and fans, and therefore to improve transparency and trust. The detailed recommendations from the EWG led to the government instructing the Football League and the Premier League to enter into structured dialogue with those supporters, and especially with the Supporters Trust at that club. The EFL issued a new league rule informing clubs of the minimum requirement for meeting with supporters and the kind of topics that should be included. That new rule came into force for the 2016/17 season. As you may be aware the club hold two ‘Meet The Owners’ events each year which meet the criteria set down by the EFL. On top of that the club have initiated a ‘Supporters Board’ which meets on a monthly basis during the season to discuss a very broad range of topics. It is early days for this new Board, but so far the signs are very encouraging in that nothing has been held back and the trust between club and supporters is evident. As the meetings progress we hope to be able to announce the progress that has been made. Suffice to say that DRFC have not only met the new requirements but have exceeded them in both frequency and content, and that is something we can once again be proud of. IRWT
