Darren Ferguson Welcome to Carlisle United's manager Keith Curle, directors, staff and fans who have made the trip down to the Keepmoat Stadium tonight. They have started the season well and are sixth in the table having yet to lose a league game, they are a good footballing team and we know we will be in for a tough game.

Everyone at Rovers was relieved to learn that Cuthbert's injury was not as serious as we feared it may have been, and we wish him a speedy recovery. I am sure Luton will be right up there come the end of the season as they are clearly a good side.

I've been pleased with our reactions to defeat this season, when we have come out and played well in the next game. We will regroup and go again tonight. It is also great to see the Keepmoat will host a senior England women's international against France on Friday October 21 - I hope Rovers fans who are not already in Blackpool for our fixture on the Saturday consider coming down to watch what should be a great match. Enjoy the game.

Saturday was a disappointing day for us. I thought we were outstanding at the start of the match and could have been 2-0 up inside the first five minutes. The break when Scott Cuthbert got injured didn't help and broke up the rhythm of the game for us - they regrouped and dug in well, even though I felt we should have done better with their goals.

But we are on a good run, three points off the top and only nine games into the season. It is still early days, we are a really good team and a match for anyone in this league when we get it right. We need to be as ruthless in front of goal as we showed in the wins over Yeovil Town and Morecambe - but it is not easy to be at the top of our game every week, especially with so many experienced players still out through injury.

Gavin Baldwin currently disagree with the introduction of B teams into the pyramid structure - so it was pleasing to see an agreement that if we introduce eight further teams into the EFL it would only come via promotion from the English pyramid structure.

Carlisle fans were able to take advantage of reduced prices after we agreed a reciprocal deal with them ensuring that no travelling fan at either Sky Bet League Two fixture between the sides this season is asked to pay more than £15 to watch the game.

We are delighted to be given the chance to host a senior England Women's international, as they take on France on Friday October 21. I'd like to thank the Football Association for choosing us, and for agreeing to discounted tickets for our season ticket holders at £5/£2.50. There are also discounts for groups and Charter Standard football clubs - the forms for these can be found on our website.

There is a confidence around the club after a good start to the season which leaves us in a position to build from. We have averaged just under two points a game, which is going to leave us there or thereabouts come the end of the campaign. Last week I joined other chief executives, chairmen and football secretaries at an EFL meeting where we discussed the Whole Game Solution among other topics. Rovers have been open in our concerns over the restructuring proposals and clear that we

Enjoy the game.

Gavin

Club Doncaster Sports College opened its doors to the new 2016/17 students, who have enjoyed their first taste of life studying at the Keepmoat Stadium, this week. Taking part in a variety of team building exercises to introduce them into student life, the group of more than 140 have kicked off their academic year with a selection of challenging and engaging tasks ahead of their busy year of work. The college provides outstanding post 16 opportunities in partnership with Selby College, including Active IQ L2, which allows students to achieve a Gym Instructor and/or Personal Trainer status. A BTEC Level 3 course is also on offer to students, which creates a pathway into higher education or alternatively a Traineeship, which is a work experience programme based around Doncaster Rovers FC and its partners. Students also have access to specialised extra-curricular sessions ran by ex pros and the opportunity to play overseas football as well as play at the Keepmoat Stadium itself - all on top of the vocational qualifications delivered by the highly experienced tutors. With a pass rate of 100 per cent across the board last year, Club Doncaster Sports College have set the standards, completely surpassing the national pass rate. In addition, eight per cent of BTEC L3 Extended Diploma leavers last year were in the top 1.7 per cent in the country, which they hope to emulate with this year’s students. Principle Adi Turnpenny said: “We are delighted to welcome students to the college for the new academic year and are looking forward to helping them achieve their potential.” Alongside all education programmes, the College has five Academy teams which students can be involved with. Academy co-ordinator and former Rovers player, Tim Ryan runs the teams. He said: “We have four teams that compete across various levels including the National College League and new for this year we are delighted to be introducing a Women’s team. With current Dons player Connor Scott coaching the Dons Academy, the College have a great team outside the classroom too.” If you would like to apply for the 2017/18 academic year or want more information please visit www.clubdoncasterfoundation.co.uk email education@clubdoncasterfoundation.co.uk or phone 01302 764663.

Club News England Women will take on France at the Keepmoat Stadium as they begin their UEFA Euro 2017 preparations.

“We’re pleased that France have agreed to come over and play us. We haven’t beaten them for a long time so we’re looking to change that.

The Lionesses will entertain France, third in the FIFA world rankings on Friday 21 October (8pm).

“They are the third best team in the world so it is a great test for us and if we’re going to do well at the Euros we’ll have to beat teams like France on the way.

Tickets for the game are on sale priced £7.50 for adults and £3.50 for concessions. A family ticket (two adults and two children) is available at £15 and group booking and Charter Standard discounts apply.

Tickets can be purchased via the Club Doncaster Box Office in person, by calling 01302 762576. The two sides last came together in March, in a closely-fought 0-0 draw at the SheBelieves Cup. England have already sealed qualification for next summer’s tournament, which will take place in Netherlands, following a 7-0 win over Serbia back in June. England head coach Mark Sampson said: “We want to focus on playing European opposition between now and next summer’s Euros. ”There are some excellent nations who will be at the tournament and the more experience we can have playing them, the better prepared we’ll be.

“We’re looking forward to playing at Doncaster. The area has such a big women’s football history and the Keepmoat is a great stadium so it will hopefully make for a great game.” Gavin Baldwin, Chief Executive of Club Doncaster added: “We are delighted to welcome Mark Sampson and the England Women’s team to the Keepmoat Stadium as they take on France in what should be a fantastic game. “Our area has a long association with the women’s game, with the Belles side one of the most iconic names since their formation in 1969. I am delighted that we can build on that by hosting this game and hope we get a good crowd to support the Lionesses.”

09 Box Office: 01302 762576

Season ticket holders for Doncaster Rovers or Doncaster Rovers Belles can gain tickets as a discounted price of £5 for adults and £2.50 concessions.

“Although it’s a friendly we’ll be approaching this game in a very competitive way as part of our tournament preparations.

News ROUND-UP Doncaster Rovers can confirm details of a very special event planned with team captain James Coppinger.

10

Joining the club in 2004 from Exeter City, Coppinger has gone on to become a Rovers legend and is now into his 13th season at Doncaster. The 35-year-old became the first Rovers player ever to make 500 appearances for the club earlier this month and capped off a memorable day with a goal in the 5-1 victory away at Morecambe.

Box Office: 01302 762576

A free and exclusive event for 2016/17 season ticket holders, supporters will be able to meet and quiz the Rovers icon in an open forum. The evening will be held in the Legends Lounge at the Keepmoat Stadium on Thursday 6th October (7.30pm), with refreshments available and bars in operation.

So whether you wish to ask James about his hat-trick against Southend, the Johnstone's Paint Trophy success or that famous day at Brentford, you can get all of the insight from the man himself. On the evening we will endeavour to take as many questions as possible, alternatively you can send your questions in advance to jordan.owens@clubdoncaster.co.uk There are only 300 tickets available for the evening which will be distributed on a first come, first served basis. To secure your place visit the Club Doncaster Box Office with your 'Exclusive Season Ticket Holder Event Voucher 1' which will be exchanged for a ticket.

Cedric

EVINA

Cedric EVINA ‘GUNNING’ FOR PROMOTION Twenty years on from the arrival of one Frenchman at Highbury, one of Arsenal’s Youth products - also a Gallic speaker - feels as fit and as strong as he ever has done. Arsene would be proud. “It’s been the best spell I’ve had since I’ve been at the club,” Cedric Evina assures us. “It’s the first time ever since I’ve been at the club that we’d won three consecutive league games. We’re on a good run, we want it to continue.

12 Box Office: 01302 762576

“I've matured, Arsenal seems a long time ago. Physically I’ve developed and I’ve matured in my game. I’ve concentrated on things that I’m good at and, the older I get, the more reliable I’ve become. “I just want to keep on doing what I’m doing, keep solid, keep clean sheets and keep winning games. I wouldn’t mind keeping this run going; I just want to do my job quietly but efficiently. “We’re together, everyone knows their roles and we're all trying to help each other pull through in the games because for the spectators it may seem easy but they’re really not. This year especially I feel like we're stronger mentally, tougher and a lot more focused than what we have been previously. “The physicality is a lot greater than in the Championship or League One and we had a good pre-season. I believe we are one of the fittest teams in the league, if not the fittest. Teams have tried to bully us but they can see that it's not going to work. Obviously we all work on our gym programmes and you always have to be strong no matter if it's the Premier League or Sunday football but the physicality is greater than it's been before.”

The twenty-four year old is speaking ahead of a run of games that sees Rovers travel to Luton and Portsmouth with tonight’s game against Carlisle United shoehorned in between. A tough ask? You bet. However, having won the League One title with Charlton Athletic when the Addicks only lost two home games, Evina is keen on maintaining the unbeaten start at the Keepmoat and says that home form is the bedrock for success. He said: “This is a big week, three big games, massive games. I think the three teams that we're playing are going to be around the top at the end of the season so it's a week where we have to look at our real competition for promotion. If we can come out with a few wins it'll be great. “We look at it game per game, each game at once. I feel like maybe last year, when we had a bad run, we were thinking about how many points we needed from a certain amount of games rather than focusing on each game in hand. “Once that Luton game is finished on Saturday at 5pm then we'll think about Carlisle. We want to win every game, we've got 38 games left, and we want to win all 38! “Home form is crucial. Teams have to come to the Keepmoat and we want them to come here and be scared and be beaten when they get off the coach. We want to make the Keepmoat a fortress and take maximum points every game at the Keepmoat if possible. At Charlton when I won the league, when we won at home it was massive towards the points tally at the end of the season. If you could win 20 out of 23 games at home then that'd go a long way!”

Teams have tried to bully us but they can see that it's not going to work

Symbolic of Rovers’ revival is a rejuvenated James Coppinger, who has taken home more gongs than Rovers appearances (well, nearly), and the Captain is testament to a squad which has stood up in the face of adversity and injuries, according to Evina. He said: “Copps is our leader, he’s playing really well at the moment, and he’s on top form. He deservedly got his Player of the Month award. It’s a team game, we all do our bit and obviously one person sometimes has to take the credit and, with everything that’s going on around him such as the 500 appearances, he deserved

“The injured players, when they do come back, will keep us - the guys in the team - on our toes because they're really good players. They’re not players who are going to be happy sat on the bench, we'll be pushing each other and I think that only benefits the team. The injured boys have been really good this year, they've come to all the games - home and away - and supported the boys, we're all trying to look after each other. “It just felt like every time we went out to train or play, someone was getting injured and I think that's made us stronger. At the start of the season we had a big squad and then when it came to the opening game we barely had 16 players! A lot of people would have looked and said "That's it, they're going to crumble because they've got so many injuries and become makeshift," but the gaffer has done well to make us believe in what he wants us to do and we've stuck to it.”

Keeper Mark Gillespie came through the Youth ranks at Brunton Park and was rewarded for his efforts at U18 and reserve level with a one-year contract. He made his debut when he came off the bench to play the last five minutes of the game against Norwich at Carrow Road in May 2010. A successful loan spell in the north east with Blyth Spartans led to a second year within the ranks of the professionals at Brunton Park, with his deal extended yet further, until June 2015, following more impressive displays. He made the number one spot his own in season 12/13 and was the regular starting choice until a knee injury left him on the sidelines. He became the club’s longest serving player when he was offered a new contract at the end of the 14/15 season, taking him into a sixth year with the Blues. More solid displays earned him a further deal which keeps him at Brunton Park until the summer of 2017.

United signed midfielder Mike Jones on a two-year deal which keeps him at Brunton Park until at least the summer of 2018. Jones came through the ranks at his hometown club of Tranmere and signed a professional contract with them in 2006. A loan spell with Shrewsbury preceded a permanent move to Bury where he made over 150 appearances in just over three-and-a-half years. He signed for Sheffield Wednesday in the January 2012 transfer window and made the move south to Crawley in August that year for a very successful two-year stay. He joined the Latics in June 2014 and scored 10 goals in his 86 appearances.

Carlisle United appointed Keith Curle as first team manager in September 2014. Curle, 51, made than 700 appearances in a senior career which spanned more than 24 years for the likes of Wimbledon, Manchester City, Wolves and Sheffield United. He started his managerial career as player-manager with Mansfield Town and has also held the reins at Chester City, Torquay United and Notts County. A distinct improvement in performances and results led to Curle signing a new deal with the club in February 2016 which keeps him at the club until the summer of 2018.

Carlisle signed experienced striker Jabo Ibehre on a one-year deal, with an option to extend (which was triggered last season), ahead of the first day of pre-season in the summer of 2015/16. Ibehre started his career with Leyton Orient where he turned down an offer to join Spurs, at the age of 15, to stay with the O’s. He progressed through the youth ranks at Brisbane Road to make his debut at the age of 17 and went on to make almost 250 appearances during his eight-year stay with the club. He joined Walsall on a free transfer in 2008 and scored 11 goals in his 43 games for the Saddlers. Roberto Di Matteo took him to MK Dons the following season and he had loan spells with Southend, Stockport and Colchester during his three-year stay at stadium:mk. Four goals in 15 appearances with the U’s persuaded Joe Dunne to make the move permanent in January 2013 and Ibehre left Essex with a record of 17 goals in 76 appearances, having had loan periods with Oldham and Barnsley.

Experienced left back Danny Grainger became the first summer signing of 2014 when he returned to his native Cumbria to join the club on a one-year deal. His attitude and approach earned him a new contract which keeps him at Brunton Park until the summer of 2017. Grainger had played exclusively north of the border since turning professional but spent his formative years with the Blues as part of the Centre of Excellence programme. The Penrith-born defender has enjoyed spells with Gretna, Brechin (loan), Dundee United, St Johnstone, Hearts and St Mirren during his 12-year stay in Scotland and had a short trial period at Brunton Park in pre-season in 2013 before joining Dunfermline. Popular in the dressing room, he enjoys the club captain role.

Raven came through the ranks at Belle Vue from the Youth Team and made more than 60 appearances under Dave Mackay. He went on to forge a highly successful career with West Bromwich Albion (making over 300 appearances at the Hawthorns), and then moved to Carlisle via a short stint at Grimsby Town. While at Brunton Park the defender played in the Football League Trophy loss against Bristol City in 2003 before hanging up his boots less than a year later. He now works for the PFA.

Fred EMERY

LEGEND

Lincoln born Emery was a wing half that arrived from Bradford City in 1924 and made 439 appearances in his thirteen seasons with the club. Having scored 32 goals during his time at Belle Vue, Emery took to the dugout and boasted a reasonable 37 per cent win ratio. Following the war, aged 51, Emery headed to Cumbria and took the reins from Bill Shankly at Carlisle United. He spent seven years at Brunton Park and retired a year prior to his death in 1959.

OCTOBER Sat 1 H Mansfield Town 11am Sat 8 H Notts County 11am Sat 22 A Accrington Stanley 12noon Sat 29 H Bradford City 11am

Rovers suffered defeat against local rivals Scunthorpe thanks to a deflected goal. George Barmby’s shot after 14 minutes, which looped high over goalkeeper Louis Jones, proved the difference at Cantley Park. The goal came moments after Jones had pulled off a good penalty save, diving low to his left to keep out James Dean-Atkinson’s spot-kick after the Iron forward went down under a challenge from the keeper. 30 seconds prior to this Rovers had a strong penalty claim accepted by the assistant referee but overruled by the referee. Rovers play for the remainder of the first half was very good, dominating possession for long spells and forcing Scunthorpe to defend in numbers. The second half was far scrappier and Rovers became increasingly frustrated as the half wore on.

NOVEMBER Sat 5 A Hartlepool United 11am Sat 19 H Chesterfield 11am

Rovers did hit the crossbar through Lewis Scattergood before the break, with Nate Sithole going close for the visitors with a late effort which deflected off Reece Fielding.

DECEMBER Sat 3 H Rotherham United 11am Sat 10 A Burton Albion 11am Sat 17 A Mansfield Town 11am

Academy boss Kieran Scarff said: “It was a really frustrating morning. We started slowly and went behind to a heavily deflected effort.

“For the remainder of the first half some of our play was very good and showed the standards we need the players to reach. “The frustrations are based around the second half performance. Scunthorpe worked very hard to make the game difficult for us and our young players need to learn to retain composure be able to influence the game in the way we expect them to. It is important they begin to develop a greater level of consistency in their play.” The youth team are back in action when they host Mansfield on Saturday (KO 11am), with spectators welcome to join us at Rovers’ training ground.

Kieran SCARFF Education plays an important role in the development of our young players. As a club we ensure this is a main priority. Our Youth Team players attend college for one and a half days per week. The partnership with Doncaster College has been a very productive one. The results achieved by last year’s cohort were the best academic results in the football league. The apprentice framework includes a Level 3 Btec qualification (equivalent to 2 or 3 A Levels), a NVQ in Certificate. This framework is monitored and supported by League Football Education. They do a superb job in ensuring the education framework meets the needs of the players and also provides excellent support for the players at the end of the apprenticeship. Via League Football Education our players also get access to life skills workshops such as social media, personal finance, emotional health and the dangers of substance misuse and gambling.

some and it is absolutely vital we provide the opportunity for the players to gain qualifications and skills that can take them onto university and/or into careers of their choice. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Doncaster College, in particular the lead tutor Stewart Sanderson, and Paul Bartlett who is our regional officer from League Football education for their ongoing support. In addition, Tony Morton our Academy Education and Welfare Officer, does a great job of building very positive relationships with all the schools attended by players in our younger age groups. It is very important to our club that we work in a way that develops the person as well as the player and we ensure we fully support the schools by having high expectations of the way each of our players conducts themselves in their education.

THE RECORD BREAKERS: DONCASTER ROVERS 70 YEARS AGO. Part 5 - By John Coyle

50 Box Office: 01302 762576

The first of Rovers’ four October fixtures took them on a six hour railway journey to Barrow. The home side had taken five points from their first four home games and would offer Rovers a stiff test. Jackie Thompson was fit again and was recalled to an otherwise unchanged side at the expense of Frank Mitcheson. The prospect of a visit by the League leaders drew in a crowd of 11,371 to Holker Street, the biggest home attendance of the season. Rovers came close early on, with home goalkeeper Roxburgh saving well from a Bert Tindill header, but Barrow began to gain control and only a goal-line clearance from Bob McFarlane kept the scores level at the interval.

Jackie THOMSON

Paul TODD

The second half initially followed a similar pattern, with Sid Bycroft forced to marshal his defence, but Rovers gradually came more into the picture. Roxburgh had to make a smart save from McFarlane, and then with eleven minutes remaining, Rovers found a winner. Paul Todd’s pass sent Ralph Maddison away down the left and his low cross was slammed home by Clarrie Jordan. Rovers 100% away record remained intact. A feature of the Barrow victory had been the staying power of the team and it was perhaps with this in mind that Rovers made a change to their personnel for the visit of Bradford City on October 12 1946. 19-year-old Bert Tindill had been outstanding at outside right, contributing seven goals in nine games, but he was rested for the game, the more experienced Jackie Kirkaldie taking his place. In fact, Tindill was not to be seen again in the first team this season. Tindill’s military commitments, which restricted his availability and the excellent form of Kirkaldie, meant he was unable to regain his place, although he was to make a huge contribution in seasons to come.

Kirkaldie’s seasonal debut was the only change to the side that had won at Barrow. A crowd of 13,054, one of the biggest to date at Belle Vue in 1946, were treated to one of the games of the season. Rovers looked hungry for goals and struck the crossbar twice in the opening exchanges. There was little surprise when their sustained pressure told after 27 minutes.

Rovers started where they had left off and Thompson soon had the ball in the net only to be pulled up for offside. However they found themselves behind for a second time on 69 minutes when George Murphy converted Woollett’s

51

Clarrie JORDAN

cross to make it 3-2 to the visitors. Since his opening goal, Jordan had been well policed by his opposite number, the coincidentally named Bradford, but on 77 minutes he got free and controlled the ball superbly before beating Middleton. Two minutes later Jordan completed his second hat-trick in successive home games as he shot Rovers into a 4-3 lead which proved to be the final score. Once again, Rovers’ staying power had been decisive, as had their refusal to be knocked out of their stride by adversity.

Box Office: 01302 762576

Todd slid the ball through the City defence to Jordan who ran on and shot past Middleton. Rovers lead was short-lived though, and after 34 minutes Bill Murphy stunned the home crowd, beating a flat-footed Archie Ferguson with a low shot. Matters got worse just before the interval, when the Bradford centre-forward, George Murphy, got on the end of a cross to head past Ferguson. However, from the kick off, Rovers swept up the field and Maddison shot home to send the teams in level at the break.

just sit and watch my team as I'm so eager to get back out onto the pitch,” the Auckley striker admitted.

The hot-shot striker was in impressive form for the Belles until a cruciate knee ligament injury against Birmingham City cruelly cut short the England youngster’s FA WSL 1 campaign for 2016.

“I've had a good month of rehab now and my physios have been great in working closely with me.

However, the 21-year-old is remaining positive despite the setback and believes she’ll come back stronger and ready to impact Belles’ 2017 fortunes.
