DARREN MOORE Darren Moore has told the Rovers players to relish the moment as they prepare to face Premier League opposition on Saturday – many of them for the first time. A resolute, dogged performance away at Blackburn Rovers earlier this month, which was underpinned by a defensive masterclass, earned Rovers an away tie at top-flight West Ham- a side who, like Rovers, have had a winning start to 2021. “They’re in great form in the Premier League and we’re in good form at League One level so we’re looking forward to it,” said Moore.
“These are the moments they were visualising as kids, so I’ll tell them don’t waste the opportunity,” he added “They should go out Saturday and express themselves as much as they possibly can. “When the players were aspiring to be professional footballers, these are the games they would have pictured and on Saturday, they’ll have that chance to show what they can do.” Everyone in the lower leagues dreams of a cup upset, but the manager admitted that his side were facing a big challenge in David Moyes’ Hammers.
“We know it’s a great cup match and a great cup tie. “The key for us is focusing on playing the game, not the occasion. It’s an opportunity for the players to push themselves to a level that’s going to ask real questions of them – but they should relish the moment, relish the challenge and relish the opportunity.” These kind of games are a rarity with many players with long careers in the lower leagues never getting the chance to test themselves against the quality of Premier League players and Moore has told his players to grab the tie with both hands and leave everything out on the pitch.
04
“They’re a top opposition so we know that whatever team we pick on Saturday, we’re going to have to give 10 out of 10 performances,” he admitted. “We know the level and standard of player we’ll be playing against. We know the qualities they have and they’ve got a top, top manager who has brought a lot stability, cohesiveness, and confidence to the squad. “We know the type of game it’s going to be, and how difficult it’s going to be because of the level of the opposition and the level they play at. “We’ll focus, we’ll be the best we can be and we’ll see where that takes us on the final whistle.”
They should go out on Saturday and express themselves as much as they possibly can
05
CAMERON JOHN As a squad, we just want to play against the best especially while we’re on a good run ourselves. It gives us confidence in our ability to go and cause an upset.
06
Cameron John is excited to return home and test himself against West Ham United – a team most of his friends support. The defender was born in that area of London and has grown up supporting The Irons’ rivals Tottenham Hotspur, which has made Saturday's draw more appetising for the 21-year-old. “My group chat which has all my friends from home in it was nonstop the night we drew West Ham as we were all excited,” he said. “As a Spurs fan it will be nice to play against them it makes the occasion just as enjoyable for me.
“Being able to keep our winning streak alive has been valuable for us as a team - it has shown we can stick together which will be important against Premier League opposition. “We know we are going to come under pressure against West Ham but having the tenacity which we’ve shown over recent games where we’ve defended well will help. “As long as the whole team give our all then I don’t think we can complain about anything. We must play the occasion but enjoy the opportunity. Not many teams in our league will get to play against Premier League opposition in a season.”
“It’s a free opportunity for us as underdogs because it allows us to express ourselves and show everyone what we can do.
At the back of many people’s minds is the prospect of facing either Liverpool or Manchester United in the fifth round of the cup – should Rovers beat West Ham.
“I can’t wait for the game. It will be like going back home for me with all my friends and family still living down there."
For John, it would be a dream to face one of two of the teams who are fighting it out for the Premier League title this season.
Rovers come into the game on form having won seven of their past eight games – which includes beating Championship opposition Blackburn Rovers in the third round of the FA Cup.
“It is a mouth-watering tie in the fifth round, and you would be stupid not to dream or have a quick look and imagine the greatness of being in that draw and going to Anfield or Old Trafford,” he smiled.
John believes that good form and a great team spirit will shine through and give Darren Moore’s team the best chance of getting a result. “As a squad, we just want to play against the best especially while we’re on a good run ourselves. It gives us confidence in our ability to go and cause an upset,” he added.
“Arguably they are the top two teams in the country right now. “The gaffer doesn’t let us get too far ahead of ourselves so we just have to take the West Ham game first before we can even think about the games that could follow that. “You can dream, but the gaffer has made sure we’re all focused on this Saturday’s game.”

WEST HAM UNITE
IN OPPOSITION
ONES TO WATCH
LUKASZ FABIANSKI The Polish international has recently returned to the Hammers side after a short period out of the squad through injury. He missed his teams last outing in the FA Cup where they beat Stockport 1-0. Darren Randolph deputised in that game. The 35-year-old – who cost £7m when he joined from Swansea nearly three years ago – has kept six clean sheets in the Premier League this term from 18 games.
VLADIMIR COUFAL Regarded a shrewd signing by David Moyes last year, the right back joined for a fee of £5.4m from Slavia Prague and has impressed since making his debut in a 3-0 win over Leicester City in October last year. He has played 16 games for West Ham since joining the club has kept clean sheets in six of those games and has three assists to his name.
DECLAN RICE Rice was snapped up by The Irons from Chelsea’s Academy in 2014 and went on to make his professional debut against Burnley on the final day of the 2016/17 season. The deep lying midfielder – who has led his team out in most of the Hammers’ games this season – has featured 13 times for England since receiving his first call up from Gareth Southgate in 2019.
MICHAIL ANTONIO The 30-year-old is currently The Hammers only out-and-out striker and has managed to bag five goals this season from 12 games in all competitions. Four of them goals have come in the last five games proving he is in top form currently. Throughout his career he has played at right back, right midfield but has recently found his calling up front. During the first lockdown, Antonio was able to focus more on developing his strength. .

MANAGER DAVID MOYES
ABOUT THE OPPOSITION Rovers travel to the London Stadium to take on in form Premier League side West Ham United in the fourth round of the FA Cup. The Hammers are currently on a six game unbeaten run with their last defeat coming against Chelsea at the back end of December. Their home record this season has been impressive with them only
The Scotsman is currently in his second spell at the London Stadium after he was reappointed in December 2019 with West Ham looking like they were heading towards relegation. Moyes comfortably guided them to safety and has the London side dreaming of a potential top six finish this season. As a manager in the 1999/00 season, he won the old Football League Second Division with Preston North End and in 2013 he won the FA Community Shield with Manchester United. In terms of personal accolades, he has won LMA Manager of the Year on three occasions and picked up the Premier League Manager of the Month Award 11 times throughout his career. Overall, he has a 42% win ratio from a combination of all seven of his management jobs since 1998.
losing two out of 10 games on their own turf. At the beginning of the season, Moyes set his team up in a 5-4-1 formation but switched to a 4-2-3-1 against Leeds United in December which has stuck ever since. The last time Rovers played West Ham was in March 2012 when Rovers travelled to London to collect a point after Jamie Coppinger’s second half strike cancelled out Kevin Nolan’s ninth minute opener. Since both teams first met in the old League Division Two in 1935, Rovers have won 8 out of 24 games against The Hammers, drawing 6 and losing the other 10. West Ham have won the FA Cup three times; in 1964, 1975 and 1980. They were runners up in 1923 and 2006. This will be the first time both sides have met in the FA Cup.
