Gavin Baldwin

As I stated earlier in the week, we have had an extremely busy close season but a very exciting one for all involved at Doncaster Rovers. We have missed league football here at the Keepmoat this summer and are all looking forward to our first home game of the campaign this afternoon. It is important that we start well in the league at home and use that momentum, along with your support, to

make the Keepmoat a difficult place for teams to come and play. It was a pleasure to attend various supporters meetings during the off season and chat with a number of you about the club and the upcoming season. On top of this myself and the board were all pleased to see so many of you turn out for our biannual Meet the Owners event. Fan engagement is something we pride ourselves on and will continue to do so.

07

I was proud to see so many of you on the packed terracing at Accrington last weekend. Having studied the stats from the game, despite the result not going our way, the signs are there for a very positive season. With the calibre of players we have at this level, and with your dedicated support we are all very excited about the season ahead.

Chief Executives Comments

Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to the Keepmoat Stadium for our first home league game of this new and exciting season. Today we welcome our friends from Crawley Town and we head into the game on the back of a very good performance against Nottingham Forest earlier in the week. I thought we were the stronger side in the second half and showed great character to come from behind against a good Championship side. We were unfortunate not to take something from the game, however our focus now switches to the League and getting our season up and running.

Please enjoy the game and thank you for your support. Gavin

Sweetman-Kirk heaps praise on new boss Coates

Courtney Sweetman-Kirk has hailed the impact manager Emma Coates has had upon the Doncaster Rovers Belles. The Belles boss is only a handful of games into her managerial career and in that time has helped steer the club towards a Continental Tyres Cup quarter-final with Manchester City this Sunday.

10

And Belles striker Sweetman-Kirk, who has been cruelly forced out of action because of a broken leg sustained in a friendly earlier this season, was full of praise for the new Belles boss.

Box Office: 01302 762576

"It’s been fantastic working with Emma," the free-scoring forward told Radio 5 live. "She was the assistant manager and was in and around the camp so I think

the transition in that way has been quite easy. "Everyone really respects Emma, you can see the girls play for her on the pitch and it has been a really positive improvement. Long may that continue." Meanwhile, midfielder Kasia Lipka believes it's only a matter of time before the Belles' fortunes turn this season and the squad's togetherness is key to that happening. She said: "The team spirit is still very high. We are really together behind the scenes and training is going really well so it's only a matter of time before we pick up points. "One game will come and something will go our way. We can push on from there and start getting points on the board."

Matty BLAIR BLAIR’S ON PITCH PROJECT Matty Blair gets it. He understands, first and foremost, who he is and where he’s come from and then where he wants to go. “Without my family I wouldn’t be half of where I am now,” he says as a marker. It’s a massive part of my life, I love them all to pieces, and I adore them! It’s one of those though isn’t it? Everyone loves their family don’t they?

His rest and recovery aided by less time on the road. “I used to go day-to-day (from the house in Coventry to training in Mansfield) but now I’m staying more and that’s giving me the opportunity to rest better, catch up on recovery sleep and basically have downtime rather than driving. ”Touch wood I keep myself relatively fit. I look at myself and think I’d never had a serious injury before that and (touch wood again) I haven’t since. I jumped over a slide tackle and came down full force on the wrong angle on my knee. is expected. “I will try and put that shift in every week. If it means I have to come off because I’m blowing up then so be it but that’s what we as footballers should be giving at least. If the quality isn’t there at times then people can accept that but they can’t accept you not working hard and that’s something you can guarantee from yourself every week, he said. “I like to think that the gaffer has me in his plans as well and I feel like I’m welcome here and no one has made me feel awkward in any way. Its only been a month but it feels like I’ve been here a couple of years – in a good way – in so far as I’ve come in and settled straight down and that can only benefit the football side of things. I work well with the football club and everyone and they all work well with me so it’s good. ”I was at Fleetwood when we won promotion and I think it’s naïve in general for people to look too much in to the first six games of the season –

“You want to play in the big games with the big moments in front of the people who are supporting you. Those 1200 fans aren’t there to boo you, they're there to support you and they want to win as much as you do so if you give them everything, they’ll give you everything back; it works both ways. You do well and the fans will back you all the way, he said. ”Not only is it (Mansfield) a good one for the football club then but it’s a good one for me too so I’ll have to make sure I’m on it for that game. I’ve noted the league and (EFL) trophy game which means I get to face them twice and I’m sure we’re excited to go there and face them. “My personal aim is to play every minute and be part of a team that gets promoted, wins the league even. Personally I want to stay as fit as possible and pretty much be Darren Ferguson’s first name on the team sheet.” He’s going the right way about getting that, too.

DEFENSIVE ROCK Republic of Ireland national Mark Connolly is back for his second spell at the Checkatrade.com Stadium after leaving for Kilmarnock in 2014. During his first season with the Red Devils he made 35 league appearances scoring twice, those goals came against New Years Day in 2013 in a 3-0 win over Colchester United before adding his second in a 2-1 loss against Oldham Athletic. Dermot Drummy is somewhat of an unknown quantity when it comes to first team management, the 55 year old spent majority of his football career playing non-league football with teams such as; St Albans City and Wealdstone. He did however make five league appearances for Blackpool Football Club during the 1979/80 season. Since 2009 Drummy has been heavily involved with Chelsea Football Club, firstly managing the Academy side before moving onto the reserves in 2011. At the end of the 2013-14 season he lead Chelsea Reserves to the U21s Premier League title, Drummy was appointed Crawley manager in April 2016.

A pacy and diminutive player, Dumbuya was a real prospect who struggled to flourish as a right back and would have perhaps fared better as a wing back. Following Championship relegation in 2012, the Sierra Leonean went on to play for Portsmouth before making 15 appearances in Sussex for today’s opponents. He departed in the summer of 2013 and, after a stint with Notts County, now plies his trade for Partick Thistle.

Ian SNODIN

LEGEND Where are they now?

Ian Snodin made 216 appearances for Doncaster Rovers, scoring 27 goals. An impish midfielder, the local lad made his debut in 1980 at the tender age of 17 and would earn rave reviews for his performances in the same side as his elder brother Glynn. At the same time that Glynn left for Sheffield Wednesday, Snodin jnr headed to Leeds United and was reunited shortly after with Billy Bremner. His impressive performances for the cash strapped Whites led to Everton acquiring his services and, despite returning to Rovers as a player/manager in our hour of need in 1998, found his calling as a pundit for Radio City on Merseyside and an occasional columnist for the Liverpool Echo.

GOTHIA CUP PART I

Rovers were represented at the annual Gothia Cup tournament in Sweden once again by the U18’s and U16’s teams with both acquitting themselves extremely well.

44 Box Office: 01302 762576

Youth Team Manager Paul Stancliffe led the touring party and gave his verdict on a successful week which saw the U18’s reach the semi-finals as the last non Swedish team in the tournament and the U16’s reached the last 32 out of a staggering 240 teams that entered!

“We fared very well,we said before we left was the one thing they always do is surprise me,” said Stancliffe.

clubs in it so its what they call the ‘elite’, the blue riband event so its competitive and everyone goes to win it.

“We reached the semi finals which is as far as we’ve got in eight years so it was a good week for us.

“As coaches you have to monitor the tiredness of the players, it does form part of our pre season and is used to get them match fit so you do have to be wary of players that are tiring more than others. At the end of the day its all about getting the fitness. At the start of the week they're excited, the adrenaline is flowing, you cant shut them up but after a few games they start to settle down a bit!

“Obviously you’re playing every day so an hour long game is just about right, you don’t want to be playing 90 minutes. They're intense games, they're competitive as our section (U18’s) is the only one that has professional

45 Box Office: 01302 762576

“Hopefully, the players can use it to their advantage. They’ve gained an experience of football with different styles and different techniques. We want to put it in the locker and move on. We played a Brazilian team (Osasco) that for their age were probably the best team I’ve seen – even I was learning from it, it took me more than a few minutes to grasp what formation they were playing! We got a 1-1 draw so from a results point of view we effectively combatted it, but they were so good I expected them to win it

and was surprised that they didn’t every outfield player found themselves all over the pitch in every position. If the striker dropped back in to the back four it was no priblem and a defender would go up front. “The U16’s were marvellous, they could have ended up playing a lot more games than we did. Out of more than 240 teams they got through to the last 32 which was a terrific acheivmeent and that was despite their numbers being down too!”

THE RECORD BREAKERS: DONCASTER ROVERS 70 YEARS AGO. Part 1 - By John Coyle On Saturday 2nd September 1939, Doncaster Rovers lost 4-2 at Sandheys Park, the home of New Brighton, in a Football League Division Three (North) contest. A day later the British Prime Minister, Neville Chamberlain, announced that the country was at war with Nazi Germany. It would be seven long years before Rovers contested another Football League match.

50 Box Office: 01302 762576

Football did go on during wartime, though, and interim League and Cup competitions were established. Players who remained in their local area played for their old clubs, while those serving in the forces nearby could appear as guests. After an initial fall in attendances, people returned to watch football as a welcome relief from military service or the rigours of wartime production. With players working and being paid appearance money only, clubs like Rovers made decent profits. By April 1944, with the war turning in favour of the Allies, the Rovers board started thinking about a peacetime future might look like. The first step was to engage a manager and the former Sheffield Wednesday and England player Bill Marsden was recruited. Assisting him was another

ex-England man, Jackie Bestall, a former stalwart of Grimsby Town. The pair began putting together a team that could not only compete in wartime football but also could succeed whenever football returned to normality. Some of the 1939 vintage remained: half backs Bob McFarlane, Cecil Stirland and Sid Bycroft, as well as forwards Les Owens

THE RECORD BREAKERS: DONCASTER ROVERS 70 YEARS AGO. Part 1 - By John Coyle and Jackie Kirkaldie. Others came to Doncaster for work or via local military service. Paul Todd, from Middlesbrough, was a star performer in the RAF’s football team and luck would have it that he was stationed near Doncaster. His comrade and team-mate Ralph Maddison was a local man anyway. Half back Cecil Heydon also joined while

serving locally in the Army. Local youngsters in Ernie Swallow and Jim Wooldridge, both full backs, and winger Bert Tindill, joined Rovers. Clarrie Jordan, a coal miner from South Kirkby, was drafted in and showed immense promise at centre forward. A team with potential was gradually being established.

War in Europe ended in May 1945, but there was not sufficient time for the Football League competition to be restarted until the following season. For 1945-46, Rovers played in the League Division 3 North East, the Division 3 East War Cup and the FA Cup, which did return albeit as a two-legged affair. They reached the latter stages of the War Cup before losing to Rotherham United, who also knocked them out of the FA Cup. In February 1945 Rovers also experienced a change of manager. Bill Marsden was offered the role on a permanent basis, but wanted to combine this with his other job as a licensee in Sheffield. The Rovers board would not agree to this, so Marsden departed and Jackie Bestall took over as the new manager. Bestall made two important additions before the 1946-47 season. Goalkeeper Archie Ferguson, a veteran of the retreat from Dunkirk with pre-war experience in the Scottish League, was signed after demobilisation from the Army. Jackie Thompson, a skilful inside-forward with

an eye for goal was acquired from Sheffield Wednesday. The scene was set for a successful season, although no-one had any idea of just how successful it was about to be. The divisions had the same composition and the same fixture list was used. As in 1939 Rovers would start their campaign at home to Rochdale on Saturday 31st August 1946. War was over and football was back.
