"IT MAKES A HUGE DIFFERENCE TO THE LADS TO KNOW WE HAVE SUCH BACKING, AND YOU REALLY CAN BE OUR 12TH MAN HELPING US TO SUCCESS THIS SEASON"

GRANT McCANN GOOD AFTERNOON, AND WELCOME BACK TO THE FIRST OF TWO HOME GAMES IN FOUR DAYS. THESE ARE TWO IMPORTANT GAMES AS WE LOOK TO MAINTAIN THE MOMENTUM OF THE SEASON START. We can feel really encouraged by where we are, but this is still very early in the campaign and we are a long way to go - though we are all ready for the challenge. I was happy with the result at Rochdale. The boys really had to dig in at times, we know we have to do that no matter who we play every week and Spotland is a difficult place to go. Coming through a tough game like that will help the lads. I have been really impressed with our travelling support all season, with almost 800 braving the rain and making the trip to Rochdale last week. It makes a huge difference to the lads to know we have such backing, and you really can be our 12th man helping us to success this season.

players like Will Longbottom and Issam Ben Khemis got good runouts in a behind-closed-doors friendly with York City on Tuesday so we know we have good strength in depth. Gillingham are a good side, and Steve Lovell has done a good job since taking charge at Priestfield. They have had a tough start to the season, but their 2-0 win at Portsmouth a couple of weeks ago showed how dangerous they can be and why we need to be focused if we want the points today - as we need to be every week. We’ve had a good week in training and are ready to go. Enjoy the game.

I was pleased for Ali Crawford and Jermaine Anderson getting their first goals for the club last week, while

"AS MUCH AS WE APPLY BUSINESS PRINCIPLES TO ENSURE THE LONGTERM VIABILITY OF THE CLUB, WE ARE ALL PROUD TO BE PART OF THE ROVERS FAMILY"

GAVIN BALDWIN IT WAS PLEASING TO SEE US BOUNCE BACK FROM THE LOSS TO FLEETWOOD WITH GOOD WINS OVER GRIMSBY TOWN AND ROCHDALE. WE SHOWED AN ABILITY TO CONTROL THE PACE OF A GAME AGAINST THE MARINERS, THEN SHOWED OUR RESOLVE AND DETERMINATION AT SPOTLAND ON SATURDAY. Those results mean we strengthened our place in the playoff positions, setting us up nicely for the two home games against Gillingham and Sunderland. I received an email from supporter Derek Daniels earlier this week. Many of you will know Derek, either personally or recognise his face from games, who sent me a picture of four generations of his family who were at that game. His message summed up for me why those of us privileged enough to work for the club relish what we do for a living. Rovers runs through the blood of generations of Derek’s family, as it does many others. As much as we apply business principles to ensure the long-term viability of the club, we are all proud to be part of the Rovers family. We have a number of special guests

at today’s game. Students at Carr Lodge Academy received a visit from Donny Dog and Trax FM on Tuesday, with everyone receiving a goody bag as well as ticket vouchers. We also have more youngsters who play in local football leagues than usual, as part of our partnership with DDJSFL meant we discounted child tickets to just £1. Plus our work with Women At The Game sees their second event at a Rovers game designed to ensure as many people

as possible feel comfortable coming to games. We have been pleased with the interest in this year’s Big Bang. Don’t forget if you are a DNA Card holder then you can get a price reduction of one third on tickets purchased in advance. Enjoy the game.

ISSUE 09 v GILLINGHAM

NIALL N O S A M NIALL MASON HAS STARTED EVERY LEAGUE GAME UNDER MANAGER GRANT MCCANN SO FAR THIS SEASON. After being used in several positions during his first two years with Rovers, he has found himself earning plaudits in the right-back role for his ability to defend solidly and create chances going forward. “I played a lot in midfield when I was younger and then at centre back, so the full-back role is fairly new to me,” he says. “I have featured at left-back in different spells during my time here, but that hasn’t been as much of an attacking role as I am in now. “I’m enjoying having a settled position, I’m always happy to play anywhere for the team but it’s nice to be able to focus on one position. “There is a bit more balance to the team now that Danny Andrew is fully fit at left-back, and I can concentrate on doing my job on the right. “It can be difficult to find a good level of consistency as a younger player when you’re playing in different positions. I think I did well wherever I was used, but when you’re settled in one area you can be a bit more adventurous and be positive within a game.”

DONCASTERROVERSFC.CO.UK

09

The way Rovers have set up so far in the 2018/19 campaign relies on the full-backs to play high up the field and cause problems for the opposition. Mason feels he has improved as the season has gone on, after initially taking some time to get used to the new system. “I’ve really enjoyed the system, it requires us to do a lot of work and take on a lot of responsibility, which can only improve us as individuals,” he says. “It took some work to get used to with the intensity of it, you can do all the work in pre-season but it takes time to get up to speed in league games. “To be fair now we’ve had a few games where it’s very competitive we’re starting to perform better each week. “The manager has kept me in the same position even when we’ve had injuries elsewhere which is credit to him.” With 13 games gone, Rovers sit in fourth place and just three points off of the automatic promotion places in Sky Bet League One. Mason believes the good start made is down to a change in the mentality of the squad, after a year of consolidation last season. “I think it’s been a good start, we’re probably still a couple of points short of where we want to be but that shows how far we have come,” he says. “It says a lot about the shift in mentality that we’re in

10

ISSUE 09 v GILLINGHAM

the play-off places but we’re still disappointed that we’re not even higher. There are players like myself, Joe Wright and Ben Whiteman have had another year’s experience under our belt and I think we’re better players for it. “Our targets have been clear from the start of preseason, we’ve had a couple of defeats but it’s about how you react to that. “You can always tell the difference between good and bad teams in terms of how they react to defeats throughout the season. “When we lost at Burton we went a few games unbeaten, winning breeds confidence and that has shown with the results we’ve picked up.” Another key to the good start Rovers have made has

"WHEN YOU’RE SETTLED IN ONE AREA YOU CAN BE A BIT MORE ADVENTUROUS AND BE POSITIVE WITHIN A GAME"

been the belief within the dressing room, according to Mason. That is something which Grant McCann made sure Rovers had in abundance going into the season, and has held them in good stead. “The belief has grown a lot over the past few months and that is down to the start we’ve had, the manager has made sure we’re aware of how good we can be,” says Mason. “He believes we’re capable of challenging for promotion from this league and everyone is pulling in the same direction to achieve that. “I think we’ve had quality all the way through me being here but now we’ve added even more experience to that. “We’ve set our own standards for how we need to perform, we’ve shown in games throughout the opening part of the season how much we can hurt teams.” The only competitive game Mason hasn’t featured in so far was the Checkatrade Trophy win against Grimsby Town, where he was an unused substitute.

"I THINK IT’S BEEN A GOOD START, WE’RE PROBABLY STILL A COUPLE OF POINTS SHORT OF WHERE WE WANT TO BE BUT THAT SHOWS HOW FAR WE HAVE COME" He understands that the squad will be rotated from time to time, but wants to play as often as he can do. “The sort of player I am I want to be playing as many games as possible, it’s my job to play football matches and that’s something I enjoy massively,” he says. “I’m not really the type of player who wants to be rested, I want to play every game no matter what the competition is. “Everybody has to understand the choices the manager makes when he changes things, he has a squad for a reason and he has to use different players.” Rovers return to the Keepmoat Stadium this afternoon after bouncing back from a defeat against Fleetwood with a hard-fought victory over Rochdale last weekend. Mason says the squad were keen to make sure the loss was a one-off, and show why they’re challenging at the right end of the table. “The Fleetwood result was disappointing for everyone but we’re keen to make sure it was a bump in the road, it can happen to any team every so often,” he adds. “The way we play can be risky if you don’t take your chances in front of goal, because you can sometimes be exposed at the other end. “When teams do get chances it’s down to us as defenders and as a unit to make sure we make it as difficult as we can for them to score. “We have a lot of one-on-one defending to do and that is something which we’re trusted to do, so we need to make sure we repay that faith.”

TOMÁŠ HOLY TOP STOPPER

01

The former Czech international stopper was given the number one shirt by manager Steve Lovell ahead of this season following impressive performances between the sticks last term. Holy made a total of 12 appearances for his country from under-16 level through to the under-18s, having come through the academy at one of his country’s biggest sides, Sparta Prague. It would be from Sparta’s B side that Holy joined the Gills last year, and he would go on to feature in 42 League One games last season, including on the opening day against Rovers at the Keepmoat Stadium, where a string of fine saves saw him ensure the game finished goalless.

MARK BYRNE MIDFIELD MAESTRO

33

The Irishman is in his third season with the Gills, having joined from Newport County back in 2016. Byrne began his professional career with Nottingham Forest. Much of his time was spent away on loan, with a season with Rushden & Diamonds proving to be his most fruitful spell, earning both the Players’ Player and Fans’ Player of the Year awards there in 2010. Byrne also made more than 120 appearances for Barnet following his departure from Forest, before two seasons with Newport after joining the Exiles in 2014. Byrne linked up with the Gills on a two-year deal following his departure from South Wales, and he was rewarded for his fine form last year with a new deal over the summer.

O WATCH GABRIEL ZAKUANI DEFENSIVE ROCK

06

The Congolese defender retired from international duty just last month following 30 appearances for his country. Zakuani is a former teammate of current Rovers duo Tommy Rowe and gaffer Grant McCann following eight years with Peterborough United across two spells, twice helping them to win promotion to the Championship, with Rowe and McCann both scoring in the Posh’s play-off final win at Old Trafford in 2011. Prior to that, Zakuani was part of the Stoke City side that reached the Premier League in 2008, finishing as runners up, having been on loan from Fulham for that season. Zakuani joined the Gills last season, and like Holy, made his debut against Rovers on the opening day.

TOM EAVES DEADLY STRIKER

09

The towering front man joined from League Two Yeovil Town back in 2017, going on to score 17 goals in the third tier last season. After spells with Oldham Athletic, Bolton Wanderers, and various other loan spells across the EFL, Eaves finally found his feet at the Priestfield Stadium, scoring two hat-tricks last term, including one on the final day in a 5-2 victory over Plymouth Argyle. He has picked up from where he left off this year as well, having notched six goals in 12 League One games so far.

DONCASTERROVERSFC.CO.UK

15

TWO POPULAR ROVERS STRIKERS MAKE UP THE CONNECTIONS BETWEEN THE TWO CLUBS, WITH MARK McCAMMON BEING THE FIRST. AFTER BEGINNING HIS CAREER WITH CAMBRIDGE UNITED, CHARLTON ATHLETIC AND BRENTFORD, MCCAMMON SIGNED WITH MILLWALL IN 2003, SPENDING TWO YEARS AT THE DEN. IN HIS FIRST SEASON WITH MILLWALL, HE WOULD BE A PART OF THE SIDE THAT MADE IT TO THE FA CUP FINAL IN 2004, COMING ON AS A SUBSTITUTE AT THE MILLENNIUM STADIUM IN THEIR 4-0 DEFEAT BY MANCHESTER UNITED. After spells with Brighton & Hove Albion and Bristol City, McCammon made the move north, arriving at Belle Vue in 2006, during Rovers’ final half-season at their former ground. Upon their move across the lake to the Keepmoat Stadium in January 2007, McCammon wrote his name in Rovers’ folklore, becoming the first player to ever score at the new ground, grabbing the opener in the 3-0 win over Yorkshire rivals Huddersfield Town on New Years Day. During his time with Rovers, McCammon would take part in the 2007 Caribbean Cup with Barbados, scoring four goals in five games whilst on international duty. McCammon would be involved in Rovers’ successful Johnstone’s Paint Trophy campaign, as well as scoring eight goals in his second season with the club, propelling Rovers to the League One play-offs, coming on for the last 20 minutes of the 1-0 victory over Leeds United at Wembley Stadium in 2008. He left Rovers following their promotion, heading back down south and signing with Gillingham on a three-year deal. With the Gills, he would secure his second promotion in two seasons, this time from League Two, as he scored five times despite an injury during the early part of the 2008/09 campaign. Following his departure from the Priestfield Stadium, McCammon would see out his career with Braintree Town and Lincoln City in non-league, retiring in 2012 following his spell at Sincil Bank. The second connection is a man currently on the books at the Keepmoat Stadium, with none other than JOHN MARQUIS also spending time with the Gills during the 2014/15 season. Marquis’ loan spell with the Gills was one of nine temporary moves away from parent club Millwall, signing in January 2015 for Gillingham, scoring eight league goals in 21

16

ISSUE 09 v GILLINGHAM

games, including the equaliser in a 1-1 draw at the Priestfield Stadium against Rovers in March 2015. Of Marquis’ nine temporary switches away from The Den, three of those were at Northampton Town, with his final move to the Cobblers resulting in a League Two title triumph in 2016, scoring six goals in 15 appearances. Following this, Marquis would make a permanent move away from Millwall, signing with Rovers upon their return to League Two. Marquis would go on to be a star man in the Rovers’ attack, scoring 26 goals in 45 league games in his first season at the Keepmoat Stadium, being named as League Two Player of the Year, as well as being named in the divisional Team of the Year. After signing a new contract the following summer, Marquis would again be a shining light up top, scoring 14 goals in League One, including the opener in the 3-1 win away at Blackburn Rovers in August 2017. Marquis started off this current season brightly, scoring Rovers’ opening goal of the season in the 3-2 victory away at Southend on the opening day, before returning to the Keepmoat Stadium a week later, grabbing the final goal in the 3-0 win over Wycombe Wanderers. Alex Gibbings

MEMORABLE MATCH GILLINGHAM

JANUARY 16 2016 Late drama at the Keepmoat Stadium saw Rovers come from behind to snatch a point against Gillingham in League One. The Gills went into the game sitting in the second automatic promotion place after a brilliant first half of the season, and they were in front inside the opening 10 minutes, with Rory Donnelly grabbing the opener. Ryan Jackson crossed the ball into the area, with Donnelly at the back post, and his stunning volley found the top corner, handing the visitors the lead after nine minutes. Bradley Dack then went close to doubling the Gills’ lead, as he nearly finished off a counter-attack that he started inside his own half. He dispossessed Aaron Taylor-Sinclair before clipping the ball out wide for Bradley Garmston. The left-back carried the ball down the wing unchallenged before crossing in for the on-rushing Dack, but although his header looped over Thorsten Stuckmann, there wasn’t enough dip on it to get under the bar, instead hitting the frame of the goal and bouncing into the German’s clutches. The Gills made an even quicker start to the second half, as within two minutes of the restart, they and Donnelly doubled their tally. Donnelly played a one-two with Dack, with

the midfielder carving open the Rovers defence, leaving the Northern Irishman with the simple task of slotting past Stuckmann, with which he duly obliged. The introduction of Cameron Stewart off the bench for Rovers galvanised them, however, and he got one back with 15 minutes still to play. His freekick from 20 yards out was up and over the wall and placed out of the reach of former Rovers’ stopper Stuart Nelson and into the top corner, giving the home side hope of getting an unlikely point. Stewart himself would be replaced after a nasty looking injury, but it would be Andy Williams who stole the show,

as he grabbed an equalising goal two minutes from the end of normal time. Cedric Evina’s hopeful ball forward was collected by Williams, and he took a touch to take him away from Max Ehmer, with the Rovers man baring down one-on-one with Nelson. The Gills stopper rushed out, but Williams was able to slot under the keeper and into the corner to bring Rovers level. Williams and Evina both missed chances deep into the 10 minutes that were added on at the end of the game, but they were unable to snatch the three points at the death, but they would be more than happy to steal a point from a strong Gills side.

WHAT HAPPENED NEXT? The game with the Gills would come at the start of Rovers’ 16-game winless run in the league which would culminate in their eventual relegation from League One. Rovers drew 0-0 away at Fleetwood Town, before losing 11 of the next 12, drawing just once during that time. Rovers saw relegation all but confirmed after a 3-1 defeat away at Crewe Alexandra, despite Tommy Rowe putting Rovers ahead, with the final day goalless draw with Burton Albion condemning Rovers to the fourth tier. Gillingham would collect just 18 points from their remaining games of the season, slipping away from the promotion and play-off picture dramatically towards the end of the campaign. They would finish with 69 points in ninth place in League One, with the draw at the Keepmoat seeing them slip out of the top two, and ultimately a poor end to the season, with just four wins from their last 19 games, would see them drop out of contention for a place in the Championship.

THE

NUMBERS GAME TRADITIONALLY NO. 7S WERE RIGHT WINGERS AND WHEN THINKING OF THIS PARTICULAR SHIRT NUMBER ONE THINKS OF THE LIKES OF STANLEY MATTHEWS. SINCE 2002 AT ROVERS A MIXTURE OF WINGERS, MIDFIELDERS AND STRIKERS HAVE WORN THE NO. 7 SHIRT, THOUGH NOONE IS PERHAPS BETTER REMEMBERED THAT THE FIRST MAN TO BE ALLOCATED THIS SQUAD NUMBER. FRANCIS TIERNEY (2002-2004) is seldom referred to by Rovers fans without the prefix ‘Sir’ Indeed, 10th May is always remembered as ‘Sir Francis Tierney Day,’ on which the man named scored the ‘Golden Goal’ which gave Rovers a 3-2 victory over Dagenham & Redbridge in the 2002-03 Conference Promotion Final. That goal took Rovers back to the Football League after an absence of five seasons. A player seen as a future star after progressing through Crewe Alexandra’s youth system, Tierney had rather lost his way when Steve Wignall signed him during the 2000-01 season, but his cultured wing-play soon made him a favourite. Nevertheless, Tierney was badly hampered by injuries and only made 68 senior appearances for Rovers, scoring 12 times. One of those twelve goals, though, was utterly priceless. He retired from the professional game in 2004, having earned a Division Three winners medal in the 2003-04 season. The No. 7 shirt passed on, in 2005, to a young striker signed from Newcastle United. LEWIS GUY (200510) was a quick forward who sometimes struggled to find the net. Nevertheless he played a part in Rovers’ Johnstone’s Paint Trophy success in 200607 and the following season he helped Rovers gain promotion back to the second tier of English football for the first time in 50 years. Perhaps his finest hour came when, on 9th August 2009 he scored the goal which gave Rovers a 1-0 victory over Derby County at Pride Park in their first Championship fixture of the 2008-09 season. He also scored a week later, in a 1-1 home draw with Cardiff City, although this was to be his final goal for Rovers before he moved on to MK Dons in 2010. For the 2010-11 season the No. 7 shirt was acquired by MARTIN WOODS (2010-13) who had worn No. 17 since arriving from Rotherham United in 2007. The change of shirt did him little good as he made only 40 appearances in three seasons before moving on to Barnsley. In 2013, the shirt passed to MARK DUFFY (2013-14), signed from Scunthorpe United. Duffy, who played on the wide right of midfield, certainly fulfilled the profile of the No. 7 and showed some promise during Rovers’ brief foray back into

the Championship. However, following relegation he moved on to Birmingham City. During 2014-15 the No. 7 was worn briefly by loanee JONSON CLARKEHARRIS (2014-15) and at the start of 2015-16 RICHIE WELLENS (2015-16), who had always previously sported No. 19, surprised everyone by moving to No. 7. He didn’t remain at the club much longer, moving on to Shrewsbury Town. For the remainder of 2015-16, No. 7 was worn by loan players EDDIE LECYGNE (2016) and GARY MCSHEFFREY (2016-17). When McSheffrey’s loan from Scunthorpe United became permanent he retained the No. 7 shirt, but a serious knee injury restricted his contribution to Rovers’ successful promotion campaign in League Two in 2016-17. McSheffrey remains the last permanent signing to be allocated squad number 7. Last season it was worn by RODNEY KONGOLO (2017-18), a midfielder on loan from Manchester City who has now joined SC Heerenveen in his native Netherlands. For this season, MALLIK WILKS (2018-19), on loan from Leeds United, has the shirt, and after scoring in his first two outings hopes are high that he might go on to wear the 7 with distinction. "OUR YOUNG PLAYERS CERTAINLY ENJOYED THE OUTCOME AND THOROUGHLY ENJOYED THE CELEBRATIONS WITH THE TROPHY"

KIERAN SCARFF IT WAS GREAT TO WITNESS OUR YOUNG PLAYERS TAKING ON EVERTON IN THE U23 PREMIER LEAGUE CUP. GOALS IN THE 88TH AND 94TH MINUTES GAVE A SOMEWHAT UNFAIR REFLECTION OF THE GAME. WE WERE CERTAINLY VERY COMPETITIVE THROUGHOUT THE GAME AND THE 3-0 DEFEAT WAS HARSH ON OUR YOUNG PLAYERS. Everton have a pool of 54 players outside of their first team squad. The average age of our team was just below 18 and a half years of age, while Everton’s average age was just below 21. The two-and-a-half years of development and experience is massive at this stage of a player’s career and we played the last 20 minutes with seven youth team players on the pitch. Elliott Walker gave an impressive performance at right back and, at 16 years of age, he was three years younger than Everton’s youngest player!

coaching young players and the annual trophy game is a fitting way to remember him.

This type of experience and opportunity should provide our young players with real belief as they look to fulfil the potential we believe they have.

Good luck to the gaffer, staff and players ahead of today’s game.

It was brilliant to see our youngsters triumph in a nerve-jangling penalty shoot-out. The game was played with real quality from both teams. Our young players certainly enjoyed the outcome and thoroughly enjoyed the celebrations with the trophy. Well done to all involved in continuing the memory of Ian through this annual fixture.

Our under 14s competed against Barnsley in the annual ‘Kenno’ Cup, in memory of Ian Kennedy. Ian was someone who gave so much to both clubs in relation to

Hello everyone! Welcome to our game against Gillingham and special mention to Carr Lodge Academy who were the lucky winners to get tickets for today’s game with thanks to Trax FM. I have to give a huge thank you to Cooplands who keep supplying us with my gingerbread dog biscuits. Congratulations to Finlay who won a copy of Fifa 19 at our last league game. With the delight on our last Pukka Pie winner’s face and everyone else sat around him, I had to share this photo.

Enjoy the game! Donny Dog DONCASTERROVERSFC.CO.UK

GOOD AFTERNOON AND WELCOME TO THE KEEPMOAT STADIUM AS WE HOST STEVE LOVELL’S GILLINGHAM IN THE HOPE OF ANOTHER THREE POINTS.

MATCH SPONSOR:

COMMERCIAL It was a thrilling game at Crown Oil Arena last weekend as we got back in winning form – Ali Crawford, Andy Butler and Jermaine Anderson all found the back of the net to secure a 3-2 win. Grant McCann’s side will be looking to continue that winning feeling today, and go one better on Gillingham, having shared the spoils in our past three encounters with them. We are honoured to be joined by today’s match sponsor, Albemarle Homes. Committed to exceptional design, quality building techniques and high specification interiors, Albemarle Homes offer premium quality residences for the most discerning buyers.

OUR MATCH SPONSOR AT THE FLEETWOOD TOWN FIXTURE WAS BAWTRY SPORTS VILLAGE. THEY COLLECTED THEIR FRAMED SIGNED SHIRT FROM CHOSEN MAN OF THE MATCH JAMES COPPINGER. WE THANK THEM FOR THEIR SUPPORT OF THE GAME.

The company boast a range of stunning developments across South Yorkshire and beyond, designed to facilitate modern day family life. We wish them the warmest welcome and hope that they

have a great time with us today, with hopefully a win to witness too. We are well underway with the season now, and last Thursday we hosted our 2018 annual Club Doncaster Golf Day. Sixteen teams of four entered the shot gun competition at Wheatley Golf Club, including our very own Doncaster Rovers management staff and of course, our committed partners, who we hoped enjoyed the day as much as we did. There are a range of fantastic opportunities to get involved with Club Doncaster on a commercial level, whether that be through an Official Partnership, sponsorship or advertising.

SAFETY Three points is not the only priority today. Making sure everyone goes home safe is the most important result. Over recent months we have been working closely with the police and the EFL to review security at the Keepmoat Stadium. Now we are asking you to do your bit. It is vital that everyone - players, staff and supporters - remains vigilant and reports any concerns to stewards or police. Attacks might be rare, and the chance of you being caught up in one unlikely, but the message is ACT #ActionCountersTerrorism. Rovers safety officer Sam Ramsden said:

AD-105x148-Football Foundation.indd 1

"We want everyone to enjoy today’s game at the Keepmoat Stadium but if you see anything that causes you concern, tell a steward or staff member. Please do not worry that you might be wasting our time. "The stewards are here to help keep us all safe so please be patient and cooperate with their instructions. When it comes to security it has to be a team effort and we are all players." Here's a quick reminder of what you can do to help keep yourself and others safe: • Arrive early, allowing more time for security checks • Minimise what you carry, fewer bag searches will speed up entry to the ground

• Be vigilant at all times and if you see anything suspicious, tell a steward right away • If you see anything that could pose an immediate threat to safety, call 999 • In an emergency, listen to the public address instructions and follow them • If told to evacuate, do so immediately, do not wait around to film events on your mobile • Move right away from the stadium as quickly as possible for your safety and to allow clear access for any emergency vehicles • Once you are safe, follow the local police force on Twitter for updates To find out more, visit gov.uk/ACT or @TerrorismPolice

SUPPORTER LIAISON OFFICER DEAN MEDCALF GOOD AFTERNOON LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, AND A WARM WELCOME KEEPMOAT STADIUM TO THE VISITING FANS FROM GILLINGHAM. I would like to thank all the Rovers fans who made the recent journey to Rochdale, I hope you all had a safe journey and enjoyed the game. On Monday October 8, I travelled to Blackburn Rovers’ Ewood Park for the annual EFL SLO seminar. There was a jam-packed agenda of things to discuss and these events are always a good way to network with other SLOs. I was joined on my table by representatives from Carlisle United, Tranmere Rovers, Grimsby Town, Wigan Athletic and Leeds United. I have worked with the SLOs from Wigan before, but it was my first time meeting the representatives from other clubs. We started off the day with a presentation from the representatives from the EFL which looked at supporter engagement, the Family Excellence scheme and away fan experiences. We discussed different topics such as the challenges and the rewards of working with away fans and clubs. It was interesting to see that many of the SLOs have very similar issues when it comes to contacting clubs and fans. One of the hardest parts of this role is getting responses from other clubs, I believe the main reason behind this is that every club carries out the role differently and some do not put as much effort into the role as we and other clubs do. We then had a presentation which was looking at matchday safety

and security. This was looking at many different topics from alcohol being served at games to safe standing. We then discussed the new agreement by all the EFL clubs relating to the banning orders that will be given out for pyrotechnic offences. This is a three-year banning order for anyone who is found to be in possession or use of flares, smoke bombs etc. After lunch more discussions were held looking at supporter surveys, the Checkatrade Trophy and the new streaming services that are being offered to fans. The EFL will also be relaunching their away fans survey to gather feedback on how well clubs welcome supporters to their clubs. This is something that I will share on my social media accounts in the coming weeks. We then got to have a look around Ewood Park and the main part of this I was looking forward to seeing was the Family Stand. Blackburn

were last season’s League One Family Club of the year, so I was interested to see what they do so that I could feedback to the Rovers to help improve our family stand. Overall it was an enjoyable and interesting day, there were a lot of topics that were discussed and a lot of good best practice stories to consider. Listening to the other SLOs discuss their matchday roles it is always a good chance to pick up new and fresh ideas to help improve my own role here at DRFC. As always I hope you all enjoy today’s game, if you have any questions then please contact me on the usual SLO social media accounts, @SLO_DRFC on twitter, DRFC SLO on Facebook or you email me at dean.medcalf@ clubdoncaster.co.uk. VIKING SUPPORTERS CO-OPERATIVE Football is the national game, and football supporters are the lifeblood of the game. While many privately owned football clubs are well run, ours included, there are numerous examples over the years where this model of ownership has failed the supporters of that club, and has led to a number of clubs becoming either partly or fully owned by those supporters. The Minister Of Sport set up the Expert Working Group with the intention of looking at ways to improve engagement and dialogue between clubs and fans, and therefore to improve transparency and trust. The detailed recommendations from the EWG led to the government instructing the EFL and the Premier League to enter into structured dialogue with those supporters, and especially with the supporters trust at that club. As you may be aware the club hold two Meet The Owners events each year which meet the criteria set down by the EFL. On top of that the club have a Supporters Board which meets on a regular basis during the season to discuss a very broad range of topics. Suffice to say that DRFC have not only met the requirements but have exceeded them in both frequency and content, and that is something we can once again be proud of. Martin O'Hara

FOUNDATION UP Club Doncaster Foundation will be working with the Yorkshire Smokefree Doncaster to support members of the community give up smoking during October. Stoptober is an NHS campaign aimed at supporting people who want to quit and helps thousands of people annually. Head of Foundation John Davis said: “We’re delighted to be working with SmokeFree Doncaster to support this important campaign. It’s widely reported that you’re more likely to quit with the right support and that’s what’s on offer with just the click of a button. “There are many benefits to quitting smoking, such as feeling healthier, protecting your family and saving money. The simple fact is that no matter how long you've smoked for, quitting can help improve your health straight away. “In addition to the associated health benefits quitting helps protect your loved ones from harmful second-hand smoke – reducing their risk of developing

asthma, meningitis and some cancers.” Stoptober is a great opportunity for smokers to quit and the most successful way to quit, by far, is with support from your local NHS stop smoking service. Yorkshire Smokefree Doncaster offers free expert support and free nicotine replacement products or Champix which means that smokers are five times more likely to quit compared to willpower alone. Yorkshire Smokefree provides flexible support to suit you, either through face to face or telephone sessions or through an innovative online quit programme. To get the right support for you click on the link below or call 08006120011. https://yorkshiresmokefree. nhs.uk/pages/callback-request As an added incentive for Doncaster residents in October, all participants that sign up and complete the programme will be eligible for a free ticket to watch DRFC at the Keepmoat Stadium in December. Terms and conditions apply.

Matty Blair was on hand to help the newest inductees to Club Doncaster Foundation’s Fit Rovers course. The Rovers player, who as ambassador for the course regularly stops by the sessions held at the Keepmoat Stadium, spoke to those starting out and helped take their initial measurements. Matty said: “I’ve been coming down to Fit Rovers sessions now for something like 18 months, and it is amazing to see the transformation that has taken place among those who are on the course. “I’m sure some of the new guys are wondering what they have let themselves in for, but there are veterans of the course who have come back for more than 50 further sessions since completing it which just shows what an incredible family it has become.”

DATE

Health and wellbeing officer Nick Gillott said: “Matty has been brilliant for us, coming down regularly to our sessions - and we had a bit more to talk about this time with his three goals in four games for the first-team which he kept getting asked about. “It is inspirational for the guys to have real buy-in from a first-team player, it is down to the participants themselves to put in the hard work but they could not ask for a greater role model.” For more information about the Fit Rovers project and how to get involved in the future courses contact the team on 01302 764663 or go to clubdoncasterfoundation. co.uk.
