Sonja Schwedersky
Soon various compositions were commissioned, including one for six-year-old pianist Klara Khomskii: Little Hands, for piano and small ensemble. It had its premiere in 2015 during Klassiek op het Amstelveld in Amsterdam. By the request of Maarten Oomes, winner of the Prinses Christina Concours 2014, she wrote a concert for guitar and orchestra. An amateur clarinettist commissioned her to write Dense Sticky Content, a composition particularly suited for clarinettists' B/C examinations. Her other works include Emomo, in the unusual combination of eight cellos and piano. Its premiere was in 2017 during Klassiek op het Amstelveld.
Selected compositions of Sonja Schwedersky
Caprice: for violin and piano, 2008 A little story of grief: for piano, 2010 Thoughts: for piano, 2010
Special projects
Sonja Schwedersky was born in 1963, in nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel, The Netherlands
Education and career Even as a young girl she could often be found at the piano making her own compositions. From age 14 she studied the violin at the Rotterdam conservatory, with Liesbeth de Monchy-Kuiper and Jan Hulst as her teachers. Simultaneously she studied law. Until age 30 Schwedersky played in various ensembles and orchestras, combining this with jobs in lawyers' offices. A carpal tunnel syndrome forced her to stop playing the violin at the highest level. She took composition lessons with Henri Gerrits and since then has focused fully on composition.
A Slice of Pizza: for string orchestra, 2011
Schwedersky publishes study materials: One Two Play. These booklets are intended for two musicians who want to play together at an equal level. The most recent edition is for piano four hands.
The Unfaithful: for cello and strings, 2010
In cooperation with Quirijn de Lang, the baritone, who is in charge of the libretto in English, Schwedersky is working on an opera based on Tolstoy's Anna Karenina. Act II has almost been completed and she expects this major work to be published by Donemus in 2019.
Chicken Dance: for wind ensemble, 2013
Other projects in progress are a tango commissioned for a clarinet quartet and a composition commissioned for violin and orchestra.
Psalm 42: for mixed choir and string orchestra, 2013
5 Canciones sobre poemas de Pablo Neruda: for baritone and ensemble, 2011 Ziganette: for viola and strings, 2010
Blue Ragone: for piano, 2013 Emomo: for 8 cellos and piano, 2013 Psalm 23: for mixed choir and string orchestra, 2013
Psalm 118: for mixed choir and string orchestra, 2013 One Two Play (Volume 1): 12 pieces for violin and easy piano, 2014 Spring Song: for baritone and piano, 2014
Compositions
Lullaby for the beloved: for soprano and piano, 2014 It is fairly recent that Schwedersky started presenting her work to the public. In 2013 her first CD was released, Pablo Neruda. Apart from five canciones sobre poemas de Pablo Neruda it contains The Unfaithful for cello and strings, Ziganette for viola and strings, Caprice for violin and piano as well as several other of her compositions. The CD was launched during a concert in the Rotterdam Doelen concert hall in April 2013. Schwedersky's works have subsequently been published by Donemus, publishing house of contemporary classical music.
Little Hands: for piano and small ensemble, 2015 One Two Play (Volume 2): 9 pieces for piano-four hands, 2015
Award
Dense Sticky Content: for clarinet and piano, 2016 Guitar Concerto: 2016
Schwedersky was awarded the Signature Music Prize 2016-2017 by the 7 Arts Foundation (USA).
