Booking. com PREDICTS THE TOP TRAVEL TRENDS FOR 2020 From tech-generated recommendations, to ‘second city’ exploration taking a front seat - here is a look at what will be big in travel in the year ahead As we enter not just a new year but a new decade, our travel needs, behaviours and wants continue to evolve. The world today, like the explorers themselves, does not sit still. With a mission to make it easier for everyone to experience the world, Booking.com predicts that 2020 will be a year of travel exploration like never before, fuelled by technology as well as a growing sense of responsibility and deeper connection with the people and places we visit. Drawing on its expertise as a leader in travel and technology coupled with research among more than 22,000 travellers across 29 markets and insights from over 180 million verified guest reviews, here are the travel trends we can expect to see come to life in the year ahead - and beyond.

alternative or lesser known destinations in their chosen country or region. Likewise, increasing collaboration across the travel eco-system will see more awareness campaigns and infrastructure improvement drives to entice visitors to take the road less travelled.

2. Tech-spect the unexpected 2020 will see travellers put key aspects of their decision-making process even more firmly in the hands of technology. It can be overwhelming to decide which corners of our incredible planet to visit or what excursions to choose, but the coming year will see inventive tech inspiring and enabling us to overcome this hurdle with ease. Smart, trusted tech-led recommendations will connect us to a myriad of new experiences that might not otherwise have crossed our path, while also saving time (as well as screen-time) and enabling us to max out every minute of ‘now’ while on vacation.

1. The rise of the ‘second city’ traveller Second-city travel, meaning the exploration of lesser known destinations in a bid to reduce over-tourism and protect the environment, will take a leap forward in the year ahead. Over half (54%) of global travellers want to play a part in reducing over-tourism, while 51% would swap their original destination for a lesser known but similar alternative if they knew it’d leave less of an environmental impact. And to pique their interest, 60% of global travellers would be keen to have access to a service (app/website) that recommends destinations where an increase in tourism would have a positive impact on the local community. Expect to see companies respond to this demand by introducing functions that make it easier for travellers to identify second-city/neighbourhood destinations through understanding traveller’s trip preferences and matching these with

This will be music to the ears of the almost six in 10 (59%) people who say they want tech to offer them ‘wildcard’ and surprise options that would introduce them to something entirely new in the coming year. Additionally, almost half (46%) of global traveller’s state they will use an app that makes it fast and easy to explore and book activities in real time while travelling, and a similar number (44%) plan to use an app that allows them to pre-plan activities, so they always have the answers in one place. Meeting that demand, 2020 will see even more applications of Artificial Intelligence offering tailored suggestions of destinations to visit, places to stay and things to do based on your current preferences, previous trips and key contextual factors such as weather and popularity.

11

3. Slo-Mo is the new #FOMO Instead of experiencing the constant fear of missing out (FOMO) and trying to speed through as much as possible, travel in 2020 will be all about taking it slow. In 2020, almost half (48%) of traveller’s plan to take slower modes of transport to reduce their environmental impact and six in 10 (61%) would prefer to take a longer route to experience more of the journey itself. Types of transport that play into our desire to take the pace down a notch will also come into their own - from peddle bikes to trams, sleds and boats, as well as our own two feet. In fact, over half (57%) of travellers already don’t mind spending more time travelling to reach their destination if they’re taking a unique mode of transport. Likewise, 64% would be interested in feeling as if they are going back in time by taking a historical train journey (e.g. Flying Scotsman, Orient Express). Look forward to a year of slow and special travel.

When imagining a destination that has it all - from outstanding natural scenery that can be admired from the balcony of your villa, to historical sights, stunning parks and beaches to cool off and relax on after a day of exploring, followed by dinner at a fantastic local restaurant - Booking.com travellers identified Montevideo (Uruguay), Ilhabela (Brazil) and Naha (Japan) as top destinations, amongst others, that offer these all-amusive experiences.

5. Pets in the priority lane With more than half (55%) of global pet owners saying that their pet is as important to them as their child/ren, it’s no surprise that 2020 looks set to herald a new era in pet-centric vacations. We’ll see travellers putting the needs of their beloved pets well before their own when it comes to selecting where to go, where to stay and what to do.

4. Discovering the all-amusive escape A fast-paced world means that most of us are often time poor – a notion that doesn’t start or stop with vacations. Travellers will want to be as time-efficient as possible on vacation, so instead of settling into one theme for the entire vacation, 2020 will see a rise in travellers exploring the ‘all-amusive’, by visiting destinations that offer an array of enriching experiences and attractions. Over half (54%) of global travellers say they want to go on one long trip to a place that has all of their favourite activities and sights close together, and 62% agree that they would choose a destination that offers all of their favourite activities and sights near each other to save travel time. Recognizing this, expect to see the industry continue to make it even easier for travellers by curating itineraries full of variety, deals and routes to allow them to get the most out of these all-amusive destinations.

42% of global pet owners agree that in the coming year they would choose holiday destinations based on whether they can take their pets and 49% would be willing to pay more to stay at an accommodation that’s pet-friendly. Reflecting this trend, the number of pet-friendly properties continues to rise on Booking.com while savvy to this appetite, accommodations around the world will continue to look for innovative ways to up the ante when it comes to pet-tailored offerings and amenities, such as complementary dog day beds, pet spas, dedicated room service menus and even specially designed pet restaurants. Animals on vacation can definitely expect a five-star experience.

12

6. Making great memories with ‘grand’ getaways

8. Fast track to long-term travel

2020 will be the year of the ‘grand’ as more grandparents will take epic vacations with just their grandkids, leaving the middle generation behind. Almost three-quarters (72%) of grandparents agree that spending time with their grandkids keeps them feeling young and 71% believe that parents need alone time without their children. Pair that with the fact that today’s older generation is healthier, more adventurous and more keen to stay young and active than ever before, we’ll see ‘grand’ vacations that offer an array of active experiences for both generations to take part in becoming even more popular in the year ahead.

As retirement looks set to become less and less about reaching a certain age and leaving the workforce, and with increasing numbers actively planning to retire earlier, we’ll see this moment become surprisingly synonymous with ‘adventure travel planning’. Nearly one quarter (23%) of 18 to 25-year olds are planning to retire before they turn 55 and what they plan to do is also changing. 2020 will see travellers shift their mindset and start to plan big for their future golden years, with nearly two thirds (65%) of global travellers seeing travel as the perfect way to spend that free time. Nearly half (47%) of global travellers plan to be more adventurous in their travel choices once they’ve retired, and almost a fifth (19%) of those who are already retired are planning a gap year making time to travel for several months without interruption, something that over half (52%) of all travellers agree that you can do at any age. With retirement and travelling going hand in hand for so many different age groups, expect to see products that help travellers kick-start the planning process through ‘retirement travel’ saving pots, allowing travellers to put money aside that will go towards the longest vacation of their lives.

7. Race to the reservation The coming year will see travellers put culinary ambitions at the forefront of their travel decision making, with the race to snag that all important restaurant reservation truly on. For many, where and when they travel will start with - and depend on - whether they can reserve a table to enjoy highly coveted cuisine, in many cases at places whose waiting lists stretch months long. And with appetites whetted by an abundance of social media content and recommendations, it won’t just be the bigname restaurants at which travellers are desperate to nab a seat. Hidden gems - those places which have long been favourites amongst the locals and offer sought-after homegrown flavours, sometimes well off the beaten track - are the ones most likely to tickle the taste buds of travellers looking for a local gastronomic experiences, especially the seven in 10 (71%) of global travellers who say that eating locally sourced produce is important to them when on vacation. So, get your calendars at the ready because next year travellers will pivot their holiday plans around these destinations dining opportunities, looking to indulge before everyone else gets there first, or before the next must-book table appears on the scene.

Arjan Dijk, Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer at Booking.com comments: “As we enter a new decade, we’ll see the travel industry respond to a more sustainable, inquisitive and technologically-advanced traveller through the development of products, services and functions that make it easier for everyone to experience the world. From identifying second cities to help combat over-tourism, to providing ever-more tailored travel recommendations and ensuring the most diverse selection of places to stay for customers across the globe, we want to ensure travellers are prepared, supported and excited by the prospect of travel into 2020 and far beyond.” To delve deeper into Booking.com travel trends for 2020, visit http://TravelPredictions2020.com.

FOUNDERS LODGE by Mantis

In 2000, Adrian formed the award-winning Mantis Collection that today owns or represents 88 hospitality establishments situated on every continent across the globe and has become a symbol for standards and value.

Founders Lodge offers one of the best locations to see Africa’s Big Five and was founded by Adrian Gardiner in October 2016. The story begins with the Shamwari Game Reserve which he founded previously in the Eastern Cape. It was then that he discovered that the region was once teeming with wildlife and it became his vision to restore a vast tract of farmland to its former glory. With this in mind he successfully re-wilded this part of the Eastern Cape and brought explorers and discovers from all over the world to enjoy luxury accommodation and intimate encounters with nature.

He now offers a small, select number of guests the opportunity to stay over at his original residence, the secluded Founders Lodge, and to experience all of its serenity as well as viewing the Big Five at the adjacent Shamwari.

FOUNDERS LODGE With 19 staff members working at Founders Lodge looking after guests, the property was designed to provide a sense of belonging. The lodge itself was designed and built around a completely indigenous garden courtyard which leads to all the social spaces and guest rooms.

THE LEGACY Adrian is regarded by many as the founder of conservation tourism in the Eastern Cape and has left a deep footprint in the global conservation and hospitality community. His original vision connected the Garden Route with the Big Five, all within driving distance from Cape Town and Port Elizabeth and in a malaria-free region.

Each suite has a private verandah that opens onto lush lawns and the never-ending vista of bushveld and open skies. As a destination, Founders stands alone.

NTH APARTMENTS

When it comes to renting luxury, central city apartments some of the key differentiators is the location, comfort and how at home it makes you feel. NTH Apartments (Natural Tech Holland) was founded in 2015 by Gurol Celikkol, , after he realized that on business trips people are far more comfortable staying in an exclusive, well supplied apartment than a hotel room.

came to him.

Now, business and executive men and women travelling to Rotterdam seeking high-end, luxury apartments to rent can work with a business inspired and founded by someone who knows what business travellers are looking for.

Since then, he now has 30 apartments that he works with and the number is growing. Impressively, he works exclusively as a sole trader and makes use of valuable outsourced services whenever he needs to.

THE PHILOSOPHY

THE FLATS

“I realised it would be much more comfortable to stay in an apartment, and to be able to have my family come visit if they wanted, and a kitchen to cook in, as well as other home comforts,” he explains, “Obviously you don’t get these in a hotel room, but on long trips it makes all the difference.”

The stunning properties are located in the heart of Rotterdam, within walking distance of the best bars, theatres, cafes, key historical landmarks and museums that this beautiful and old city has to offer. The central station is ten minutes away on foot, connecting guests with the rest of the country.

Gurol’s passion for the tourism and hotel industry began whilst he was studying and working in hotels. According to him, the aspect he loves most is meeting people from all over the world and ensuring his guests feel at ease. It was while he was on a work trip and staying in a hotel for three months that the inspiration to create a business focussed on providing executive travellers what even the plushest hotels could not,

with beautiful parquet floors, light interiors and plush furniture. All of the designs are to make the guest feel that this is a place where they can relax and settle into and feel right at home.

“Guests should know that they are being treated well and have people on their side throughout their stay in Rotterdam,” he says, “People should never feel alone.”

RELATIONSHIPS Gurol believes it is very important to have good connection with the guests, hosting them regularly and basing the business on principles of trust, good communication, good service and honest pricing.

As was covered when we reviewed them earlier this year, they are the chosen pit-stop for many tourists coming to the region for work, leisure or to embark on a tour up Muhavura mountains to enjoy the myriad of wildlife available.. Indeed, two of the more popular attractions in the area are gorilla trekking in Mgahinga National Park which is only a two hour drive away and visiting the second deepest lake in Africa, Lake Bunyonyi.

Most of the linen is sourced in local stores in Kampala but some is imported from Dubai and China. In-room entertainment includes Multichoice (DSTV Africa) which includes international sporting and local news channels. The rooms all enjoy a great deal of natural light and from the windows guests can see the hilly landscape of Kabale.

THE ACCOMMODATION Boasting superb accommodation facilities, the hotel offers guests numerous rooms ranging from singles all the way through to executive suites.

GUEST EXPERIENCE

For those seeking to explore, management would suggest Lake Bunyonyi which is a beautiful lake formed in the valleys of Kabale. Also visiting Mgahinga National park and climbing Mountain Muhavura in Kisoro should definitely be included in any visit.

The hotel is not rambunctious. There is a breakfast buffet in the morning on the lower ground floor which does get quite busy and during the day there are usually swimmers at the pool or people sitting in the gardens enjoying lunch. Otherwise the hotel is quite peaceful.

PRICE: USD $68.00 per night.

While the native language of the area is Rukiga, all official communication is conducted in English. Among the regular amenities guests can request morning wake up calls and room service is available at a charge. WIFI is available but a range of local newspapers can be found at reception.

KASBAH DU TOUBKAL (DISCOVER LTD)

Due to its unique location and it’s singular backstory, guests staying at Kasbah du Toubkal, are in for a real adventure. In the literary sense of the word.

It is quiet up here, with the only animal sounds coming from the inquisitive birds or from the domesticated cats that prowl the premises at night and lounge about in the shade during the day. Birds are the main form of animal life that can be seen here, not including the domesticated sheep and goats grazing the mountain side. While rare, it is not impossible to see mouflon, a subspecies of horned sheep along the hills and owls hunting at night.

As regular readers will recall from when we reviewed Kasbah du Toubkal earlier this year, this destination is located on top of a mountain, 100m above the reception and the only way to reach the hotel doors is via a 15 minute walk with mules carrying your luggage.

During winter the mountains are snow-capped, and the air becomes fresh and crisp while during the springtime the walnut trees, cherry trees and apple orchards farmed in the valleys fill the air with a fruity scent. The lack of pollution is a big factor in the air quality of the area and it also means that at night, the sky is alive with stars.

This unique positioning promises great chestfuls of fresh mountain air and expansive views of the surrounding land. Additionally, when considering the challenge that the proprietors overcame to get the construction materials, furniture, decoration and even the food for the kitchens up the same track, it adds to the overall sense of value.

EXPANSIVE CULTURAL EXPERIENCE

ACCOMMODATION AND STAFF

The Berber culture, defined by its pride and it’s simple lifestyle, has remained unchanged for centuries and a stay at Kasbah is an opportunity to learn more about it. Five separate settlement areas create the nearby village of Imlil which has a population of only 1500 and is located at the end

At the award-winning hotel there are fourteen comfortable en-suite rooms, three of which can be used as a private self-contained house. In addition, there are three family rooms and the garden with large terraces that offer unparalleled views of the surrounding mountains.

“… beyond its food and unabashed luxury is the friendliness of its staff.”

Or as the Financial Times put it,

AWARDS As we covered in our last review, Kasbah du Toubkal has won numerous travel awards due to its unique approach to tourism. And, while it is certainly a stand-alone example of providing the best location and comfort, it was also restored very sympathetically to its original design so that guests often believe it to be a hundred years old. This approach of maintaining strong ties to the past without necessarily influencing it has been followed in Morocco since His Majesty, King of Morocco set it as a regional standard, ensuring other developments follow but do not sever the connection to the past. After all, in this quiet realm, on the edge of the world the past defines the present. of the main road system, beyond that point the only channels of communication to the outside world is via narrow footpaths and precarious mule tracks where the Berbers call home.

THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND Guests should allow as much time as possible when booking because Kasbah du Toubkal’s popularity amongst visitors to this location speaks for itself. Bookings can be made on their website or via telephone.

CONFERENCES Offering a location that inspires and captivates, Kasbah du Toubkal has formed quite the reputation as being a conference centre for businesses seeking to create a sense of majesty. NILE SAFARI LODGE The New Nile Safari Lodge In Murchison Falls National Park. Uganda

According to Nathalie, once you understand that the thriving abundance of life in this area is nevertheless reliant on a fragile eco-system, wanting to protect it becomes second nature. And, sharing the experiences that can be had here with international visitors is the surest way to inspire people from across the globe to do the same.

One of the first tented lodges along the Nile River in Uganda, the Nile Safari Lodge was founded in 1993 by Zahid Alam. Opened under the name Geo Lodges it was designed to be a place of natural beauty, where the presence of guests would have little or no impact upon the thriving wildlife of this legendary area. It was a worthwhile legacy, so in 2017 when the camp had begun to succumb to the marathon of time the family owned company NOVAM Ltd took over the premises. Their aim was to uphold the legacy, restore the lodge to its former glory and add some tailored appeal for the discerning modern-day traveller.

“Enjoying the beauty of nature has never been academic,” she points out, “People need to make the journey and see what this world is like. They need to experience it with all of their senses and allow themselves to be changed by it. This is the truth of travelling to Africa, you do not leave the same person as you arrived.”

We spoke with Nathalie Van Pée of Nile Safari Lodge regarding what the lodge stands for and why this legacy is worth maintaining. She explains, “Having grown up in Uganda and having lived here for over twenty years, we want to both share the beauty of the country and conserve it for future generations.”

THE LODGE There are thirty locally employed, highly trained staff members at the Nile Safari Lodge which is located at the limit of the national park and right on the riverbank. But what is truly unique about

34

THE IMPORTANCE OF SPACE While often understated, a sure way to determine the standard of luxury at any accommodation is the state of the ablutions. In the same way that a restaurant can be immediately judged on the state of its kitchen, so too can a resort or lodge be lauded or condemned by the state of their guest bathrooms. Bluntly, the kings of the Nile would feel quite at home here. Imagine sinking into a tub in one of these spacious rooms, soaking the activities of the day out of your muscles while watching the steam dance across the thatching. Or, languidly peering out the window at the Nile and imagining yourself drifting lazily upon those currents, while all the creatures in the grass and leaves surrounding you buzz and sing and chirrup just for you.

the location is that the lodge is elevated from the mighty Nile River and this offers guests an uninterrupted view of the wildlife that congregates upon its shores, drawn in by the life giving waters.

The clever use of space in the sleeping areas and the bathing areas has created another aspect

There are eight bandas in total. These include six standard bandas, a Family banda that includes a very popular private child-friendly nine person pool and one exclusive Honeymoon banda which comes with a private plunge pool and an outside star bed. According to Nathalie, with little or no light pollution in the area, the available opportunities for night-time gazing at the cosmos are quite spectacular. The lodge is built using eucalyptus poles and grass thatch as the dominant materials. Stilts have been used to deal with slopes and these have created spectacular views from the various cantilevering decks. Meanwhile, the steep geometry of the roofs allow the impressive structures to sink organically into the surrounding trees as if they had sprouted from the branches themselves.

which sometimes goes unappreciated. Uncluttered living space. Nothing feels as luxurious as having a lot of uninterrupted room to move around in; be it to slow dance to some romantic music with a lover after sunset, or to chase your children around before tickling them to tears. Africa is all about dancing and laughter after all.

With a unique selection of Rampel designed furniture, the bandas are a combination of comfort and simplicity with a big dose of luxury. The interiors offer the calming smell of thatching and eucalyptus, along with providing an exclusive style and ambiance that immerses the guest into the spirit of the location.

CUSTOMER SERVICE

“This is important to us,” Nathalie explains, “We wanted an eco-lodge that would blend seamlessly with nature, hence the architectural design of the lodges that has allowed us to provide spacious accommodation for our guests while keeping them in touch with the ever-inspiring Nile.”

While there is no denying that the lodge is certainly an impressive sight providing the most breathtaking and Instagram worthy views, the team understand that the real strength of hospitality comes from the attention paid to the smallest details of guest satisfaction.

35

THE LODGE Since NOVAM took control of the lodge in 2017, it has been fully renovated to its current status and 2019 has been a new start for them. “We believe that each year is an opportunity to offer something new, exciting and worthwhile for the guests,” Nathalie says, “This includes not only things pertaining to guest comfort and the general luxury of the lodge but also making sure we are doing everything in our power to protect this remarkable and vibrant area we’re lucky to find ourselves.”

“Understanding that many of our guests will have certain expectations,” Nathalie explains, “We make sure to keep lodge and suite cleanliness above the usual standard one would expect. With this in mind we implement a daily procedure sheet designed to effectively train our employees and ensure they always have the best resources and equipment to maintain the highest standard of cleanliness.”

As a National Park, the area is protected. However, the modern sensitivity of global travellers to their own impact on the environment is growing and this is something that NOVAM plan to encourage. “This is without a doubt one of the most mesmerising and humbling places of beauty you will ever find,” she says, “It’s beauty never lessens whether it’s your first night here or your twentieth year and guests always leave with a great sensibility to their place in this eco environment.”

Relationship building is also a key aspect for them, and Nathalie reveals that to build these relationships they focus on exceptional communication. As mentioned, many of their clients come from faraway lands and different time zones.

“Seize the opportunity to escape the ordinary,” Nathalie adds.

“To exceed the expectation of our guests and ensure their comfort during their stay,” Nathalie says, “We make sure that we are present at the lodge and are open to guest enquiries or complaints. It makes it easy to address any problem and find the solution.“

MICROLIVING HOMEWARES

Vanessa Cohen began her company in 2018 after building her brand of stylish, bespoke and above all comfortable hammocks and swing chairs for ten years.

before launching her official brand were well spent as she tapped into the strength of social media and the internet to promote the quality and style of her products instead of the brand name.

Authentic, handwoven hammocks from Thailand coming in a range of colours and styles and guaranteed to last a lifetime, these are only one of the items that Microliving Homewares has on offer, but they are the ones that have gained the strongest following online and with good reason.

The result was an engaged pool of clients and customers eager to share their enjoyment of their products and the novelty of knowing a supplier for their hammocks. Like owners of classic cars or expensive furniture, connoisseurs of chilling out like showing off their hammocks, and when asked where they got it from, being able to wink and say, “I know someone.

Whether it is the gentle swaying motion they create, or the feeling of being weightless or even the indulgent and roguish sensation we get when we sling ourselves with abandonment into one of them, hammocks are synonymous with chilling out, relaxing, taking it easy and admiring the world as it passes by. Of all of the furniture in history that humankind has created, this one is uniquely able to achieve this.

This kind of connection is particularly important for the small and medium enterprises that are propelling the incredible growth of the glamping, eco-lodge and eco-tourism industries. As they look to build relationships with people and not necessarily with brands, businesses that demonstrate a priority with customer relations and satisfaction will take the lead over bigger, more boring brands.

THE HAMMOCKS

In fact, there is very little scientific evidence available to suggest that it is even possible to be stressed about anything at all while lying in a hammock. Especially one that is hand woven, authentic and of the highest quality.

COMPETITIONS With a swath of new designs coming in the new year and currently all products on sale, there is a new competition that Microliving Homewares is offering. When purchasing a hammock, you get automatically entered into a chance to win a holiday to North Stradbroke Island in Queensland Australia for seven days! Not including flights.

THE STYLE Easy to carry and pack for travellers and stylish enough to adorn the veranda, porch or living room of any household, Microliving Homewares have gone to great lengths to ensure that their products have all the peripheries such as hammock stands, colours and designs necessary to be used anywhere.

That would be an awesome place to spend some time in a hammock. WEBSITE: https://microlivinghomewares.com.au FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/ vanessacohen13/

VERTICAL VEG HOME GROWN In the early days of the business Marcelle sold many of her pocket panels at various markets like the Saturday Neighbourgoods Market at The Old Biscuit Mill to people who loved the idea of being able to grow their own food but did not have the space in the form of a garden to do so. Many pockets are now adorning balconies and kitchen walls, providing organic food and oxygenated air to their owners. To date the company has been represented at many Expos and Vertical Veg is sold online through many outlets.

MORE TO IT

When space is a premium, growing up is the only option. Vertical Veg (Pty) Ltd manufactures easy to install and ready to use pocket panels that only require a wall. Large enough to grow most herbs, vegetables and flowering pot plants these pockets have combined gardening with hanging around to create a brand new functional aesthetic

Marcelle explains that she loves growing her own food, loves cooking, loves feeding people and believes everyone can benefit from growing their own fresh food. Not just for the nourishment but also for the sense of accomplishment gained from knowing you grew something delicious. Or beautiful for that matter, as the Vertical Veg pocket works just as well for flowering plants! But there is more to it.

GLAMPING AND ECO-LODGING Vertical Veg was founded in 2013 when Marcelle Warner, who has a BSc Hons degree in Zoology and a Diploma in Natural Medicine, was approached by the prestigious Westin hotel in Cape Town to erect a vertical garden for them. She had to create a business to win the contract, and what it did was give her the chance to rethink the manner in which we grow our food. While, it may have had its first start in the plush hotel industry, it is in the glamping and eco-lodge sector where Marcelle’s designs have really taken off. As these hospitality industries seek to deliver on their promises to bring guests closer to nature, the Vertical Veg pocket offers an option that does not require people to be down on their hands and knees to do the gardening.

“I believe that it will go a long way to aiding with sustainability of our present environment,” she says, “I endorse movements like Slow Food and am a great fan of organisations like Soil for Life. As a wife and mother of three wonderful women, I feel that small useful ideas can change the world and that everyone needs to look at what they are doing to help or hinder global food sustainability.”

“Not only does it provide the chance to get into growing your own vegetables and herbs conveniently,” says Marcelle, “But it also creates an engaging and inviting aesthetic to any wall. Especially in areas that are over developed.”

WHAT GROWS BEST The pocket system works best for leafy veg like spinach, chard, pak choi, tat soi, and most of the popular herbs such as thyme, marjoram, oregano,

40

basils, rocket, chives etc... Marcelle has seen people grow cabbages, literally one per pocket! Very tall and heavy herbs like lavender and rosemary require far more depth for their roots so are not really suitable. Also veg like tomatoes, peppers, potatoes and very tall plants are not easy to grow in small pockets as the weight of their growth tends to pull them down. Dwarf varieties can be grown such as some chillies and trailing tomatoes. “We do manufacture grow bags to accommodate taller veg such as tomatoes, beans, potatoes and brassicas,” she says, “And our product range has grown substantially since we started.”

2020 At the moment, Marcelle reveals that they are launching a new addition to their range of Veggie Pots. There are two sizes a 5 litre and a 10 litre fabric plant ‘bag’ or pot and a new 20 litre pot. These ‘bags’ are useful additions to place below wall mounted panels to grow bigger plants in. They are of the same fabric which allows water to percolate through and drain away and allows the roots to breathe.

PRICE: A tiny single pocket costs R95.00 A 4 pocket panel costs R255.00 The bigger pocketed panels go from R395.00 for 5 pocket panels to R650.00 for 15 pocket panels. The bags go from R75.00 (5l), R115.00 (10l) to R185.00 for 20l

“The 20 litre pots have been specifically designed to accommodate large and top-heavy plants and to appeal to the new ‘grow-your-own cannabis market,” she adds.

KAROO LAVENDER LTD The bottles and packaging are recyclable, the products themselves are completely biodegradable and nothing in the range is tested on animals. In the spirit of the Karoo, buying from Karoo Lavender means buying a breath of fresh Karoo air.

ORDERING PRODUCTS Having outsourced the production of the products, delivery time of orders depends on area and product volume. For example, local orders can take up to three weeks and international orders up to ten. Each product is different in terms of delivery time but having worked with many of their customers for multiple years they know how to mitigate this with early orders and keeping on the ball.

With such prestigious customers as Boschendal Wine Estate in Franschhoek, Kwandwe Game Reserve in Grahamstown and Gondwana Game Lodges in Mosselbay, Karoo Lavender has a reputation for supplying a concise and elegant range of room amenities. Offering the most popular products favoured by the top guesthouses, the owner-driven company operates out of the Great Karoo in South Africa, providing those special touches to a range of businesses, from boutique one-bedroomed guest houses up to larger game farms, expansive hotels and wine estates.

CUSTOMER SERVICE As the company offers room amenities to the hospitality sector, Annemarie is well aware of the stakes involved in customer satisfaction. Her customer’s customers use her products and so her quality counts for a great deal.

Formed in 1998, Karoo Lavender Ltd has an interesting backstory. Annemarie Kroon, who has a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Cape Town, founded the business herself after she moved into the sparsely populated area of the Karoo. Wanting to grow and develop a business and bring in a paycheque for herself, she found she had the opportunity to train and employ the local women of the area who had very little formal education, no work experience and next to no other opportunities. Since then, the business has grown to become the trusted and “indemand” supplier it is.

As such she explains that customer service focusses on building personal relationships, “Karoo Lavender is an owner-driven business,” she says, “A customer talks to me, the owner, personally and not to a call centre, this means that any changes or issues can be dealt with immediately. This ability to act immediately is crucial not only for the relationship but for the business’ workflow.”

BUSINESS Beneath the shadow of an ancient mountain range and working with a team consisting of up to ten local men and women from the Karoo valley, the distinctive lifestyle products are sourced from trusted, hand-picked suppliers which are vetted by a professional cosmetics specialist. This is an ongoing process as each year they bring in a new range of products and upcycle the old.

As an example, preparations for Exit Festival which is held in July, begin in April with meetings with all relevant decision makers involved. Actual work on site starts 10 days before festival camp needs to be functional.

Kamper Planet was founded in April 2005 by Silvester Domonji, Chairman of the Scout organization of Vojvodina in the northern province of Serbia. It was a business born from the desire to prove himself as an entrepreneur and to capitalize on the many years’ worth of experience he had gained as the head of a regional Scout organization.

KAMPER PLANET In 2005, campsite accommodation support was needed by the Exit music festival which is held every year in Serbia’s second city Novi Sad. During the twelve year association with Exit, Kamper Planet has provided campsite accommodation to over 100,000 festival goers. It has since expanded its festival activities to include the Seadance Festival Montenegro and other festivals in the region. It has also developed its own campsite in the village of Bezdan in northwest Serbia and additionally offers campsite services to the film and television industry.

STAFF AND PARTNERS Since Kamper Planet is mobile and flexible, allowing it to provide services to various clients and festivals the number of people engaged can vary widely from ten people to over three hundred.

Answering the need for festival goers for security for their personal items, Kamper Planet offers not only rent-a-tent but also the basic renta-locker options. Over and above these items they have other turn-key services such as setting up a camp with the whole infrastructure and personnel, including admittance point, security, safekeeping of personal items, keeping campsite clean and tent set up assistance.

The Head office is located in City of Novi Sad, northern Serbia and most suppliers are sourced by visiting other festivals and fairs, scouting competition and conducting Internet research. Most of the equipment is purchased from Belgium and they have partnerships set up with reliable local vendors.

They can even get a hot shower at any time. Chill out spaces are available for those who want to relax and exercise and dance areas for those who want to be more active. On-site food and drinks vendors cater to a wide variety of tastes. Kamper Planet blends all these facilities and services together to produce a unique, friendly and entertaining ‘campsite village’ atmosphere

ECO FRIENDLY APPROACH 2020

Kamper Planet cares for the environment. Its campsites are designed to fit the natural features of their landscapes and have no negative impacts on them. Campsite cleanliness and ecofriendliness, alongside safety and service, are the company’s highest priorities to which the work of all staff and service vendors are dedicated.

In 2020, Kamper Planet will team up with Prosperity Works, the region’s leading adventure sport event company to host Highlander, a fiveday, 100km international challenge hiking event, in the picturesque Stara Planina (Old Mountain) region of eastern Serbia. Highlander Serbia will form a component part of a sequence of Highlander events taking place in Austria, Croatia, Greece, Bosnia and Hercegovina and Slovenia.

Campers are requested to keep their own personal campsite spaces clean as well as to respect the general campsite environment. The sites are left in pristine condition after the campsites are dismantled and all rubbish and waste collected and disposed of in environmentally friendly ways.

ATERRA GLAMPING

Aterra Eco Camping is especially popular with families and offers everything that guests can expect of a successful glamping site. Francisco and Claudia seek to provide guests with a taste of the freedom, peace and tranquillity that they enjoy themselves. And, to achieve this goal they have approached it with a holistic, healthy philosophy.

Offering a unique and wholesome glamping experience aiming to reconnect guests to nature and themselves, Aterra Glamping is an ecological campsite located on the Southwest coast of Alentejo in Portugal. Founded in 2012 by Francisco and Claudia de Brion, avid travellers themselves, and surrounded by grass and woodlands, guests often comment on the immense, inescapable beauty of the location and the warm and welcoming hospitality.

“Aterra is a chance to reconnect with nature and has been carefully designed to reflect our experiences,” Francisco says, “Having lived abroad and travelled widely, Aterra reflects the influences and inspirations that we have had from different cultures and styles.”

“Aterra offers guests a unique combination of comfort and contact with nature,” Francisco says, “They get to have an ecological experience surrounded by animals and nature whilst relaxing in very comfortable and beautiful surroundings.”

It is thanks to this that the resort has a hybrid element that combines Portuguese and regional specialties with other stylings and flavours of the world. Such as the strong and immediately recognisable Indian connection and affection.

THE GUEST EXPERIENCE Located in an oasis, Aterra is a paradise teeming with vibrant life. Secluded and yet close to the local town and beaches it possesses an exotic feel, combining aspects from Asia and other destinations around the world that the couple have travelled to and been influenced by.

THE ATERRA ENVIRONMENT

ACTIVITIES

Accommodation at Aterra includes romantic Rajasthani tents, stunning yurts and stylish tipis. Each one of these abodes offers a unique experience for the guest which colours the visit in a deeply personal fashion. Considering that, when many of us wake most mornings in drab rooms with right angled walls and flat expressionless ceilings, it sets the entire day on a fresh tone to wake up somewhere unexpected, airy and beautiful.

Days can be enjoyed participating in one of the many activities on offer, such as horse riding, cycling, yoga and kayaking. Or, guests can enjoy the calmness of this secluded sanctuary with a massage or chilling at the large freshwater lake or surfing at the nearby Vicentina Coastline. As Aterra is surrounded by gardens, fruit trees and a mixed forest, the only sounds that guests hear come from the trees or the animals from the free range farm. They have a range including ducks, chickens, peacocks and geese, horses, donkeys, and of course resident dogs and cats. So, upon returning from a day’s activities you can chill and relax and not be disturbed by sounds of traffic, noisy neighbours, loud music or cities.

“It’s a happy surprise first thing in the morning that gets the mind excited for what other unexpected but beautiful things are to come,” Francisco explains, “For some of our guests who have come to us for breaks from their busy professional lifestyles, this is enough to change their entire outlook.” Then of course there are the views. The camp is near Sao Teotonio near the Vicentina Coastline, an area of outstanding natural beauty that offers stretches of beautiful beaches and headlands. It is a marvellous view which does deserve a moment to pause and be appreciated.

THE SITE With a maximum capacity of thirty five guests spread across eight tents and one chalet, Francisco says that while their minimum stay is two nights, some guests stay for two weeks. “Aterra provides a luxury camping experience where guests are able to hear the sounds of animals, yet relax in a comfortable, beautiful environment,” he says, “You can enjoy good food with an international menu, participate in activities, meet people, make friends and fully unwind. All surrounded by fresh air, beauty and nature.” All of the construction is made from natural materials, mostly sourced from the surrounding area including wood, earth, stone, bamboo and cane and the architectural aesthetic of the camp blends perfectly with the surrounding lands, increasing that feeling of being included in nature and not separate from it.

AN ECO TOURISM SITE

smells, sounds and sights of nature while knowing they’ll be able to lay their heads onto good pillows and sink into a comfortable mattress at night.

As an ecological destination, much has been done in the background to ensure that the site has next to no impact on the surrounding land. Francisco explains that while most guest mostly don’t even realize the infrastructure that has been assembled in the background, a great deal of work has been put into the site to ensure that their footprint is particularly green.

“A huge amount of maintenance is required from our team of ten,” he says, “As all the natural materials need constant care and treatment to maintain them. For example, in the spring we need to re-wax, oil or varnish all of the wooden surfaces and if anything gets damaged it needs to be repaired as soon as possible. At the end of the season, all of the tents are taken down, washed and carefully stored.”

“There are a number of outstanding features that have been introduced to engage the guests more with nature,” Francisco says, “These include compost toilets, solar heated water and all of the structures are made from natural materials and as they are open to the nature, full of fresh air.”

UPKEEP According to Francisco, something that often goes unappreciated at eco-neutral glamping sites like Aterra, is the balance between being completely eco-focussed but still offering hotel standard comforts. Guests are looking for the best of both worlds when they arrive. Being able to enjoy the

This is over-and-above the daily routine of cleaning and maintaining the general parts of the site. Toilets and showers are cleaned daily and all communal areas are maintained constantly to keep them welcoming and tidy. Francisco tells us that part of the upkeep is also the calm, social respect between guests with considerate etiquette. “Guests are asked to remove shoes when entering the main reception and dining areas,” he says, “An ideal paradise does not include muddy footprints on the floor.”

RECOGNITION Their overall approach has been noticed and they were awarded the coveted Green Award by Trip Advisor and were ranked in the top 20 best sites for Glamping by The Times UK! “We regard our business as an open house and therefore our relations between our staff and with clients is of upmost importance,” he says, “We introduce ourselves to every guest, I serve the breakfast every day and always like to have contact with everyone staying with us.” For Francisco and Claudia, the real reward is for guests to leave feeling refreshed and renewed and wanting to return.

TRANSPORT: It is advisable to hire a car to be able to explore the surrounding area and local beaches. There is parking on site.

Then, romantic evenings out with their Lakeside Dinners, where diners can have a view over the lake and onto the boundary of Kibale National Park, or the excursions to the Fishing Village Kyantambara which is a scenic village on the lakeshore. Peter explains that Kibale National Park is renowned for its diversity of monkeys and great apes, of which the best known is the chimpanzee. Sadly, deforestation in the past 20 years has led to habitat degradation and endangerment of biodiversity. Thankfully, tree planting activities at Rweteera Safari Park in conjunction with work done with the local community will be able to restore this area.

ANABEZI CAMP

In 2010 the Davy family got involved in Ana Tree Lodge with the idea to harness its remote location and build a luxury tented camp that was both classic and comfortable. Anabezi opened in 2013 and was soon joined by Amanzi Camp which is also situated on the Lower Zambezi River about three kilometres downstream.

Indeed, despite leasing the land for 25 years, the Americans left in 1974 and until 1983 the Lower Zambezi was a private hunting ground for the President of the Republic of Zambia, Dr Kenneth Kaunda. What remains of this retreat can still be seen up the Kulefu channel. In 1983, this area was finally declared a National Park and six years later G&G Safaris, of the Cumings family, arrived with plans to establish a tourist camp. They are still involved in the park to this day as owners of Chiawa and Old Mondorro. Some years later in the 1990’s Ana Tree Lodge was erected but the lodge only opened in 1997, providing guests with a rustic, authentic bush experience which was perfectly suited for this remote location and quickly became popular.

Since the construction of Anabezi Camp, the company has also assisted with the creation of Kulefu base which has positively impacted the level of poaching in the Eastern part of the park.

THE LOCATION Until Independence in 1964 when Northern Rhodesia became Zambia, the Lower Zambezi National Park had been used mainly for hunting and was largely unsettled. In 1973, under an US AID Programme, Wildlife Conservation International came to the region with the intention of setting up an International Park, however due to the civil war that broke out south of the river in Southern Rhodesia, which is now Zimbabwe, the park never came into being.

UNIQUE POINTS Built on the former Ana Tree Lodge in the Lower Zambezi National Park in Zambia, the Anabezi Camp is 3km upstream from their sister camp, Amanzi. With 60 locally employed staff members, it is the most remote camp in the most exclusive park in Zambia. It is a destination worthy of any traveller seeking to connect or reconnect with Africa in a personal manner.

52

2020 In 2020, Anabezi Camp will have another sibling. The four chalet Kayila Camp (www.kayilacamp.com). Kayila Camp will combine tradition with comfort. Situated on a ridge on the banks of the Zambezi, it boasts sweeping views of the Mana Pools National Park on the opposite bank. The camp has a beautiful outdoor lounge area that overlooks the fire-pit deck and swimming pool, providing an excellent vantage point to experience the magic of the Zambezi River which is a meeting spot for hundreds of species of animals. Luxury that is not over the top, coupled with easy viewing of the natural wildlife. This will be a very worthy new addition to the family and for the family wanting to explore the Zambezi. NIMMU HOUSE

ACCOMMODATION

For those seeking to explore the Himalayan paths and discover the culture and beauty within this region, Nimmu House has been providing the ideal spot to stay since 2012 and proving that, as we covered last time we featured them, there is much more to the Himalayans than just mountains.

There are five heritage rooms that are perfectly designed in respect of the Ladakhi culture and seven deluxe glamping tents in the resident orchard. Each accommodation has its own private bathroom and wherever possible everything is supplied by local regional businesses.

Ten thousand feet above sea level and less than an hour from the capital of Ladakh, this beautiful establishment has become an emblem of the region and an ambassador for the protection and preservation of local heritage. With a rich story of its own and boasting the most spectacular views from its rooftop, Nimmu House should be near the top of everyone’s bucket list.

The star gazing here is quite amazing thanks to the altitude and the lack of air pollution. There are lights in the garden at the property, not only to show off how beautiful it is there after the sunsets, but also for anyone going for a night-time stroll. Also, flashlights are provided in rooms and tents for when guests have to cross the garden to get to the restaurant. Nevertheless, this small countenance to light pollution is not enough to impede the appreciation of the heavens at night. Apricot and apple trees fill the air with their aromas and guests will no doubt appreciate the freshness of every breath at over three kilometres above sea level.

54

THE GUEST EXPERIENCE Staying here is an experience that allows guests to immerse completely into the local culture while enjoying an unbeatable comfort in this remote region of the Himalayas. During the day, guests will hear birds, Tibetan ceremonies, locust in the trees and the sound of the river that passes by the house garden. The sorts of animals that can be spotted are marmot, yaks, cows, goat, eagles (you have to look up for them), and in wintertime snow leopards which guests can see while enjoying the nearby nature

trails. Fortunately, thanks to the altitude, there are no mosquitoes or spiders so many city dwellers will be relieved about that. During high season, which is July and August, in the early morning the temperature is between 10 to 12 degrees Celsius and in the afternoon around 20 to 25 degrees Celsius. During this time the environment is green and beautiful with the water coming down from the mountains and pouring into the rivers and lakes. During this time the sediment build up makes the lakes brown, whereas when compared to wintertime (November to April), the mountains are full of snow and the lakes are sparkling blue. POUSADA DO PARQUE ECOLODGE

EARLY START

Since 2003, Pousada do Parque Ecolodge has been an inspiring example of eco-tourism done right. The creation of lawyer and environmentalist Oswaldo Murad, the lodge has become a symbol of how tourism and hospitality can be done in such a way as to give back to nature instead of taking away. And the experience of staying here is quite something.

The days start early with a 5.40am sunrise which is accompanied by a symphony of birds, featuring a diverse range from black birds, macaws and many others. Each morning their songs pour through the trees with great merriment at the start of a fresh day. Whereas, when night falls, the shadows come alive with owls, nightjars, crickets, frogs and many, many cicadas.

THE LODGE EXPERIENCE

A recommendation to all guests from Oswaldo himself is to take advantage of the wonderful views that can be had from their observation tower. This stands 10 metres tall and offers a 360° view of the surroundings. Thanks to it being on top of an 800 metre hill away from the main house and with next to no nearby light pollution, at night-time the sky becomes a bottomless ocean of stars.

Pousada was created to be a sanctuary for native animal life and there are over 282 birds species, guinea pigs, lizards and crab-eating foxes. There are also a number of other mammals that frequent the area; however, these are more difficult to spot and are usually only registered by camera traps. Those captured on film include wild pigs, peccary, armadillos, porcupines, maned wolf, tapir, tayra, puma and even jaguars.

THE LOCATION

For city dwellers suddenly finding themselves surrounded on all sides by wildlife, the sensory onslaught experienced during the first days are guaranteed to induce the deepest and most effortless sleep ever. Even those guests with an already established love of nature will find themselves stirred by the immensity of it all.

Strategically located on the border of Chapada dos GuimarĂŁes National Park and at an altitude of 750m, the lodge sits in 500 hectares of private land. Here there are many treasures for guests to discover including two seasonal waterfalls, amazing views and several hiking trails available for those who always travel with their boots. There

58

WHAT GUESTS CAN EXPECT Guests will find comfortable beds, sterling hammocks that are perfect for hanging around in, gorgeous views and breathtaking walking trails. But they won’t find televisions or minibars in the rooms because Pousada do Parque Ecolodge is not suitable for people wanting to stay inside! This is the place for nature lovers to indulge and get their boots dirty. Also, the food served is all real, organic and produced by the lodge.

GETTING THERE are no fences between the Lodge and the 35,000 hectares of the National Park so guests will find themselves truly in the thick of it.

The closest airport is in Cuiabá, 70 Km away from the lodge, from there guests can either drive to the lodge which is 15 km from the city of Chapada dos Guimaraes, or by bus. Either way it is important to let the ecolodge staff know when you will be arriving so that they can arrange access to the National Park, as the gate is otherwise closed.

There are also archaeological sites nearby with rupestres (rock paintings) which have been explored by the Natural history museum of Paris.

PRICE: R$ 490/ US$ 125 Average price range per person, double room.

THE ECOLODGE As we covered the last time we spoke with Oswaldo, the whole idea of the lodge was to use the local material and craftmanship to promote sustainable preservation among the region and eco-construction.

VIDA BY SELINA Changing the world, one person at a time. Rebounding from the fast paced event industry of NYC, Ed explains that he turned to integrative medicine for body and mind wellness which led him to the decision to follow his passions. These passions still included event management but were now combined with his newly discovered interest in health and wellness. “What I do now was born from a deep desire to prototype a better, more abundant way to live,” he says, “That can focus on true wellness, longevity and quality of life.” The next few years were invested in meeting top doctors, healers and practitioners of various wellness modalities while visiting the top wellness centres around the world. In 2015, he launched Experience Vida, a boutique Event and Retreat company. Then, in 2018, just three years later, Selina Hotels came in and partnered with them to create and operate VIDA by Selina, in Costa Rica.

Dedicated to hosting one-of-a-kind retreats for guests with a taste for the extraordinary, VIDA by Selina is a retreat centre with a purpose. A solemn goal of transforming their guests into the greatest possible version of themselves in an environment that offers the best of eco-tourism. “When people feel alive and connected to others, they create a positive impact on the planet,” says co-founder Edward Zaydelman who founded VIDA twelve years ago, “When you feel good you naturally want to create a healthy environment around yourself, affecting the people and your small part of the planet.”

“This was a major milestone,” he says, “From here I set out to create something that I had wanted to do for a long time. Helping entrepreneurs and teachers in the retreat by sharing some of the knowledge I had gained over 18 years in the event business. Retreat Lab became a yearly course and a live event which did just that.”

THE BIRTH OF A GREAT IDEA

THE LOCATION

When Ed and his family moved to Costa Rica, they were in search of land to create a unique retreat centre to help bring their wellness vision to life. It became open to the public in 2012 and partnered with Selina hotels in 2018 to join its new Lighthouse Collective, which is a collective of similarly focussed retreat centres.

Overlooking the ocean and nestled just below the cloud forest of the Montes de Oro, Vida sets on 65 acres of pristine land in the quiet seaside town of Miramar.

“I grew up in New York City,” Ed tells us, “And my professional background was major event production and management ranging from events with seven thousand people to boutique gatherings for performers like P.Diddy and Britney Spears. The pressure and stress involved was taking a toll on my body and I knew a change was needed.”

60

we always want to convey at Vida. The tepees are spacious and allow you to disconnect from the ordinary aspects of life. You’re close to nature but have the creature comforts of mattresses and great showers.”

A ninety minute drive from the San Jose Airport and close to a wide array of popular destinations and eco-adventure attractions, including some of the top beaches in the country, as well as Cloud Forests and Rivers, the location is concurrently secluded but not isolated. And, for beach lovers, it is only a ten minute drive from the Costa Rica Yacht Club which allows easy access to the secluded white sand islands of the Gulf of Nicoya. Vida is an off-the-grid property away from the bustling hubbub of civilization and offers the perfect place for retreats and meditation, surrounded by forest animals, chirping birds and the sound of the wind.

ECO CONSTRUCTION All the materials used for construction are ecofriendly and inspired from the surrounding areas of the property. The main material used is wood, sourced from local trees and bamboo as it is a very sturdy and attractive material. Some areas are built with cement out of necessity, but this doesn’t damage the natural look and feel of the property. “We are located in a mountainous area overlooking the coast, so we have a mixture of beach and mountain vegetation surrounding us,” Ed says, “There are rivers around the area as well as lush natural areas. Inside our property, there is a

ACCOMMODATION There are 30 spacious, five metre tall glamping bell tents on site and while most of them can sleep two people they also offer triple occupancy tents, allowing them to host up to 90 people per event. For larger events, Vida can expand to hold up to 250 people and even provide accommodation for staff members to get a good night sleep on site. Generally, for events, guests stay for up to a week to get the full experience. “These tents allow our guests to be the most connected to nature,” Ed says, “They are comfortable and yet feel a sense of adventure that

huge banyan tree which we call the Vida tree, and this is where we conduct several ceremonies and events.” The location is also alive with animals and some of the animals that can be spotted and definitely heard in the area includes the howler monkeys, a lot of birds, ant eaters and sloths who are fantastic at just hanging around and chilling out. “We also have a full permaculture system with over five hundred exotic fruit trees,” Ed says, “Which encourages many insects to visit the site which in turn attracts more animals to visit.”

“Our main rancho offers laptop friendly working space for those busier guests to work from,” he says, ”We also have put power points on the main rancho and inside all guest tepees so that their devices never run out of battery.“

THE TEAM At Vida, there is a team of 12-15 people working on the property. However, if there is a request for a big event, their staffing can adjust in order to best accommodate their guests. Their staff are fully trained to the Selina standard and follow the Standard Operating Procedures which all of the Selina locations around the world adhere to.

THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND: Vida is a retreat centre and mainly works with groups of ten people or more that are looking to host special events. Partnering with a variety of teachers, mentors, yogis and people in the wellness industry to offer their guests exceptional programming and a worthwhile stay.

“These are very well regulated and standardized throughout all the properties including Vida,” Ed says, adding, “Each employee is instructed through the use of manuals and checklists on how to maintain the general standards of cleanliness and hygiene in our site. Training all staff on procedures and protocol is naturally of the utmost importance to the success and comfort of our guests.”

“Each group no matter the size and length of time is a unique production for us, so we take pride in both the small and big details to make this a one of a kind experience. We are here to co-create this with you,” Ed Zaydelman, Co-Founder PRICE: Prices start from $110 USD per person per night and includes double occupancy accommodation in their glamping tents, three meals a day and snacks from their delicious, organic farm-to-table restaurant.

AMENITIES Understanding that we live in a hyper-connected world, Ed explains that they provide guests with high-speed internet connection that is accessible throughout the property.

LA FORTUNA SELINA “There is a range of rooms available,” Allan reveals, “We have community rooms for groups of people or people travelling on a budget, private rooms and suites and a gorgeous Teepee area.”

After living in the United States for ten years, Allan Bado Jimenez, a 29 year old Costa Rican, returned home to travel and explore his country and fell in love with the wealth of culture, history and lush nature he found. He began a new journey that would see him working in tourism and hospitality and three years ago he was introduced to Selina for the first time. La Fortuna Selina, one of the most attractive destinations in the country, opened soon after on July 28th, 2017.

THE LOCATION

Since opening, La Fortuna Selina has provided many solitary travellers and digital nomads with a community of friends to tap into and be involved with. They also provide a number of community activities to further make each guest feel at home, like nightly bonfires under the stars near the Teepees where guests meet up and share stories.

Surrounded by lush rainforests, jungle waterfalls and one of Costa Rica’s most active volcanoes, the famous Arenal Volcano, the diversity of life and colour here is quite amazing. The proximity to this hot mountain, makes the area the centre of the best thermal springs and attractions. It also has some of the best hiking trails offering the most dazzling views of the area and other activities ranging from ziplining, trekking and mountaineering.

Rooms are clean and secure, communal kitchens are stocked and leisure areas have an array of inhouse activities. The teepees are very stylish and cosy and beautifully designed, and there is always the possibility that guests may see some of the frequent informal residents which include monkeys and iguanas. Even sloths.

Out of the jungle, in the spirited mountain town, visitors will find themselves surrounded by a variety of shops, bars, cafés and restaurants. All brimming with the wonderful vibe that this area is famous for, and all under the imposing gaze of the neighbouring volcano. Days are usually hot, wet and lazy and the nights come alive with nightlife music, restaurants clubs and bars.

Their unique offering, standards of cleanliness and excellent customer service ensure that La Fortuna Selina receives a steady flow of positive commentary and reviews online from happy and enamoured guests. Their approach has also won them several awards from Booking.com and TripAdvisor.

“Selina is a lifestyle, travel and hospitality platform,” Allan says, “Born out of a desire to celebrate the nomadic lifestyle and to experience our planet’s most incredible destinations. This town incapsulates that spirit perfectly.”

“For La Fortuna Selina the most important thing is to forge connections with our guests by creating the best unique experience with the community,” Allan says.

ACCOMMODATION Hosted in the centre of town, La Fortuna Selina offers an ideal platform to launch explorative expeditions for those who are new to the area. Be these adventures to a local coffee house or restaurant, or a hike up the mountain; whatever the size of the adventure it is better to be in the thick of it and not on the periphery.

64

ACTIVITIES

about it and that’s not even including the food, bar and shopping scene which can be explored with as much vigour as any mountain or jungle. For those seeking an even deeper cultural experience, La Fortuna Selina offer workshops on the local culture, to fully immerse those seeking to tap into the history of the place. This has proved very popular as many travellers find the spirit of a location can be better understood when you know what the backstory is. In this way, places are just like people.

“Activities are a reliable way to create communities,” he adds, “They make opportunities for guests to communicate and chat with each other, hang out and become friends and even travel companions.” While travelling alone can be exciting, it does get lonely. In fact, it is fairly common knowledge that loneliness today is a major problem, not only for digital nomads who frequently flit across border lines, but even for those who are settled in one location. Thanks to hyperconnectivity many interactions and communications take place digitally without any of the important social interaction which we, as humans, need.

According to Allan, many of their clients are digital nomads in one form or another, attracted by this call to a community that they can finally call their own, and on average mostly they stay three to four nights at a time.

“So, to remedy this, La Fortuna Selina is designed to nurture that connection,” he says, “Guests can hang out with fellow travellers in the common areas which includes a garden with a pool. We have a library, a cinema room and a shared kitchen where guests can save on cash while learning new recipes or enjoy some great local meals at our restaurant prepared by our local chef.”

“Many either return or seek out the next Selina site along their way,” he adds, “But we stay in touch with all of our guests and keep them updated on new developments across social media. Once you’re in the Selina family, you’ve got a friendship community for life.”

WHAT IS SELINA?

Activities include tours through the treetops of Los Cañones, plunging off the waterfall, rafting the rapids of Rio Celeste and spelunking in the Venado Caves. This area has a palatable buzz

Understanding that exposure to new ideas, different ways of thinking and different lifestyles are the reason why many people travel, Selina is a hospitality network targeting young travellers

65

A shift in the modern priorities is taking place. Many people from many countries and across many ages now calculate value by the number of experiences and human connections rather than just numbers in the bank. A happy irony of this is that this can prove to be an incredibly lucrative lifestyle to adopt, not only fiscally but also in the sort of adventures one can have, but it isn’t always easy and sometimes people just need to recharge.

“Selina La Fortuna is like a power socket for your soul,” Allan says happily. with a holistic approach to the travel and work experience. Founded by Rafael Museri and Daniel Rudasevski in 2014, who after traveling the globe and staying in many places believed they could change the world of hospitality.

PRICE: Depending on room $15 to $100 TELEPHONE: +50624797259 EMAIL: reception.lafortuna@selina.com

Through the platform, Selina’s staff of travel professionals select only the most incredible places across Latin America, North America, the Caribbean and soon the rest of the world. Combining the natural beauty and elements of their locations with the best of local activities, food, community and work. In essence, Selina is a nomadic ecosystem.

WEBSITE: www.selina.com/es

DIGITAL NOMAD HEAVEN As their main client base are not simply students on a gap year, but professionals in their fields who work hard every day, the other part of La Fortuna Selina’s attraction to the digital nomad community is the coworking space and the great WIFI. “Selina La Fortuna started offering co working space in March 2018 for guests and visitors and this quickly became a haven for digital nomads,” Allan says.

PUERTO VIEJO SELINA

Possessing a unique vibe unseen elsewhere in the world let alone the rest of Costa Rica, Puerto Viejo is a city that is proud of its multiculturality and its flavour. With over fifty different nationalities calling it home it’s a city alive with vigour.

THE IDEOLOGY The founders of Selina Puerto Viejo have managed to create a place that can forge authentic, meaningful experiences between staff, guests and locals. This is the spirit of Selina, which owns many sites, and is focused on the current generation, encouraging creativity and free thinking and a sense of community and giving.

Quiet and peaceful during the day, at night it erupts with live music, reggae, dancing and partying in the streets and on the sands. While the smells of a globe worth of different cuisines and flavours of drink envelop the city in a cloud and drift down the streets in a flood.

For example, guests are invited to participate in beach cleaning days and other activities that contribute something to the place and to local residents. In the Selina family, the ideology of sharing and giving aims to unite and solidify a new generation of travellers who can hold these ideals to heart. And, through this do their part in creating a new and exciting world to explore.

Puerto Viejo is also famous for its stunning beaches, where the Caribbean ocean and the jungle meet and some of the finest surfing in the world can be found. This is the paradise where Selina Puerto Viejo was founded in February 2017.

As part of this approach, Selina believes in employs locally and Selina Puerto Viejo has twenty nine incredible staff members and all of them are Ticos (native Costarrican), while 85% of them are also locals who were born in the Puerto Viejo area.

ACCOMMODATION

ECO CONSCIOUS CONSTRUCTION

Two main categories of accommodation are available at Puerto Viejo.

Many local materials were used in the construction of the buildings, including wood and native stone. All the exterior parts of the teepees use local dry leaves called Suita, which is a little palm tree.

Private, which includes thirteen Micros with a shared bath, thirteen Uniques, which are tepee tents, eight Standards, five Deluxes, three Suites, one Studio Apartment and four Apartments. And Community, which includes three dorms which sleep between six and sixteen people and are perfect for large group trips.

But the most important thing here is the meaning behind the structure, Tepees are inspired by the traditional houses of the Bribris Indians, who have lived in the area for hundreds of years. It is said that the Tepee was conceived under a cosmovision and is a place to rest where all knowledge and spiritual energy work together in perfect harmony, connecting the mind and the world. Locally, they are known as Casa Cรณsmica.

ACTIVITIES With such a vibrant community there is no shortage of activities to enjoy at Selina Puerto Viejo. From bonding with your fellow residents to integrating with locals, enjoying the delicious AfroCaribbean food and listening to the local music. For the more activity-eager traveller, they are spoilt for choice here as this region was made for the outgoing, outdoorsy type. There is kayaking, snorkelling, paddle boarding, reggae nights and the very, very best surfing.

All of them enjoy a Caribbean style of decoration and most have been built with big balconies and windows to let the breeze and sunshine in. WIFI, USB adapters and power points are readily available for charging devices and updating socials.

In fact, this destination is known in the surfing community for the biggest and most powerful wave in Costa Rica, known as Salsa Brava. TRAVERSING AFRICA Your Perfectly Tailored Adventure

Africa calls to the adventurer with an unmistakable challenge to seek what is over the horizon, to explore, to discover and to embrace the remarkable beauty of this incredible continent. This is the case even for natives like South African born and bred Kirsty Perring who founded Traversing Africa in 2018. After earning her diploma in travel and tourism and spending twenty three years working in the industry, her safari tour company is the embodiment of her avid belief in the value of travel and its ability to transform the way a person sees and interacts with the world.

Having grown up in SA, Kirsty goes on to explain that she has spent her life travelling and exploring the continent and as a result possesses an intimate knowledge of the destinations and is able to offer firsthand advice and insider information. “Nobody wants to think they’re on an average safari,” she points out, “When people commit to come to Africa, they want to believe it’s going to be an adventure. They want to be surprised, they want to be captivated and enthralled. So, I make sure I’m able to offer those secrets that others may not know and that are not readily available on the internet.”

“When I started Traversing Africa,” Kirsty explains, “I was determined to offer something that was unique and give clients the chance to see their Africa through tailor made journeys that were inspiring and memorable.”

THE SAFARIS The immersive quality that Kirsty offers in her safari tours is something that has made her a go-to for families, solitary explorers and groups. Typically, the safaris can last between two days and three weeks and offer a range of involvement for all kinds of people. The tailored tours cater for those who are a bit timider and more cautious, seeking to explore Africa from an almost academic approach of look but don’t touch, all the way to those who want to taste Africa on the wind and feel the soil between their toes.

70

“While some clients will tell you everything, they want to see in such detail that you need to manage their expectations at the start so as not to disappoint them,” she says, “Others are hesitant to mention what they really want to see and because of this they miss out. So that’s why we build up a relationship where they feel that they can talk about what they’ve always dreamt of seeing in Africa.” Kirsty adds that these relationships are the most fundamental part of her business and they’re not just limited to her and her clients. There are also the relationships she has with her safari and accommodation partners, where the exchange of information and constructive feedback are vital for the smooth running of the business.

“For those who don’t grow up here,” Kirsty says, “Africa represents a once in a lifetime journey. Each client has dreamt about what their adventure will be like and these expectations need to be respected and, wherever possible, exceeded.” She goes on to explain that there certainly is enough variety in Africa to achieve this, but it takes that personal approach which is something she has been so dedicated to producing. According to her, the only way to gain access to a client’s list of “must sees”, is to build the sort of relationship with them where they feel they can share.

MATCHING THE SAFARI TO THE CLIENT According to Kirsty, who has seen the industry shift and morph over the last two decades, every person has a safari or tour that is absolutely perfect for them. And, as she and her business represent a number of countries in Africa, all which offer unique and exciting safari options, it’s important to match the country with the clients. To do this there are a few ways to narrow it down and they involve getting to know the client and asking questions. “Are they first timers to safari or have they been on one before? Are they travelling with children, and if they are what are the ages? What time of year are they travelling, are they looking for the best price or are they solely interested in the best viewing experience?” she says, “These are the kinds of things we need to know.”

71

Then, what are their interests and are they aware of the scale of viewing and safari options available? Do they want to explore Africa by trail, water or air? Are they wanting to see birds or buffalo? Migrating herds or predators? Are they looking for adventure or opportunities for photography? Kirsty makes sure that these questions are asked because, as mentioned earlier, she never wants a client to be disappointed because they’ve missed something, they really wanted to see but didn’t mention.

away from home where they can kick of their shoes, put their feet up and help themselves to a drink. Others want to be waited on hand and foot by a fleet of butlers. “One of the important things to know,” Kirsty adds, “Is if the client needs access to strong WIFI or if they’re looking for a digital detox. And, if it is the latter, how extreme do they want it. For example, are they wanting to go completely cold turkey without any connectivity at all or would WIFI in their rooms still be a good idea? You just need to get to know them.”

“For those wanting to be hands on there are a number of conservation opportunities for clients to get involved such as rhino darting for research purposes,” Kirsty reveals, “Or the safaris can be mixed with some culture, city life, history or even combined with a beach. All of this goes into deciding where to send clients and how to partner them with their perfect adventure.”

IMPORTANT CAUSES Always one to add value, to her client’s experience, to her industry and to the environment that she works within Kirsty has become a familiar face in important causes. Always involved in something worthwhile she is an ambassador of how more businesses should strive to be. Recently she held a fundraiser in Toronto regarding Saving The Last Rhino Fundraiser, to help raise awareness and finances for Project Rhino. There are some incredible safari prizes up for grabs including safari trips and awesome accommodation stays. https://www.charityauctionstoday.com/auctions/ Saving-the-Last-Rhinos-Fundraiser-8784 PRICES: see website WEBSITE: www.traversingafrica.com

ACCOMMODATION

COMPANY ADDRESS: 55 York Street #1103, Toronto, Ontario, M5J 1R7

Traversing Africa uses a variety of accommodation depending on budget and tastes, ranging from affordable three star to five star deluxe luxury tents, to villas, to bungalows, to hotel type lodges. The average length of stay is three to four nights at each property and Kirsty explains that like the safari, the accommodation must suit the client.

TELEPHONE: +1 6479240674 EMAIL: kirsty@traversingafrica.com

“Smaller boutique properties suit couples and honeymooners while lodges with incredible kids safari programmes are always a win for families,” she says, “Then, lodges that incorporate dining at one big table with all guests and guides are a good option for single travellers, so they don’t eat alone.” Concurrently, first time safari goers may be wary of staying in tented accommodation regardless of how secure it is, and some people want a home

ORGANIC PARADISE TOUR

and soon became a very popular brand and a successful enterprise.

A family business, Organic Paradise Tour was founded in January 2015 by Rolando Soto Soto, an auditor who worked many years in the banking industry in Costa Rica. After he retired from work, he decided to dedicate his time to organic agriculture with a belief that this sector is the future of humanity.

THE INSPIRATION

Many years later, Organic Paradise Tour was created as a complementary business to engage and educate more people about local organic agriculture, to open more doors for networking and development and to bring more employment to the area. Managed predominantly by Rolando, his wife Lidieth and his eldest son.

Rolando has always loved the beauty of this part of Costa Rica and so twenty years ago he returned here to begin his agricultural business. Starting with organic pineapples, he founded PiĂąas OrgĂĄnicas SOGO which employed locally

For guests this is an amazing opportunity to get involved with the local agricultural industry, learn something new about your food and enjoy some tasty treats at the end.

THE TOURS A team of five locals help with the tours which last about 90 minutes at a time as they travel across the 33 hectares. These tours are engaging and an excellent rural adventure across a beautiful organic pineapple plantation. The journey is on a specially designed tractor that pulls a cart with a capacity of 45 people. While on tour, their bilingual expert provides information about the area and production,

growth of the organic pineapple and tips to choose the best pineapples at the supermarket. At the end of the tour, while surrounded by their paradise and listening to folkloric music, they offer a delicious piĂąa colada, homemade pineapple jelly and fresh pineapples for guests to enjoy. The tours happen in a working organic plantation so they are as authentic as they can get. Tours take place in the mornings 8am - 10 am and afternoons 1pm - 3pm all year round. Also, certified by Kiwa BCS OkĂś Garantie, Global Gap and Bio Suisse the entire operation is completely committed to recycling and composting. Clients need to make a reservation either via telephone or email, and they can also do so through the different agencies that Organic Paradise Tours work with. Capacity of the tour is 90 people total in separate carts.

CUSTOMER SERVICE Since they started in 2015, they have built up relationships with their customers and have grown reliably with each year bringing more people interested in their tour. It has also become very popular with agencies who are always looking to offer travellers and tourists something different to enjoy on their trips and some of these agencies engage bookings up to two years ahead.

experiences to create an intimate travel journey that will make lasting memories.

Offering unique vacation experiences to revitalize mind, body and soul, Walker Wellness Retreats offer an individualized experience focused on improving health and wellbeing. Founded in June 2016 by Amy Walker, a mental health therapist and self-confessed world travel addict, she and her husband wanted to share their love of globetrekking and having a pro-active, positive impact on the lives of others.

A SENSORY EXPERIENCE Wanting their clients to be able to self-reflect and hit the reset button while on their retreats, Amy and her husband have come to understand the importance of engaging all of the senses while removing as much of the unnecessary stress that travelling can sometimes create.

Enlisting the expertise of local workshop teachers, yoga instructors and massage therapists, Amy and her husband offer small group adventures that are fully organized and prepared inhouse. All that a client needs to do is turn up and they find that everything has been taken care of. They even research the best locations and potential

82

As such each trip includes transportation throughout the retreat, accommodation at hotels, resorts or cabins that come with a 4- or 5-star rating, a variety of activities and healthy meals as well as breathtaking scenery on tours that are off the beaten path and sublime. Participant groups are usually under twelve people and everyone is at least over the age of eighteen.

Understanding the customer needs is very important to Amy and she explains that they send a questionnaire to every client to learn what is most important to them in a retreat. “This is a superb way to get them to take the time and truly consider what it is that they want to get out of their journey,” she says, “It also prompts questions so that we are able to plan in the right direction.”

HELLO TANZANIA Known for tours and safaris that are off the beaten track and always rich with discovery, Sylwia Boniecka has been hand-crafting Tanzanian adventures for clients since 2010. With each product being a reflection of her love and passion for this country, 2020 will see a range of new products available and will no doubt see clients finding new and amazing sights on their epic adventures.

“Iddi drove up close,” Sylwia describes, “Perhaps five metres away from them and I found myself face to face with a wild lion. So close that our gazes locked.” Indelible to all other safaris, she admits that it wasn’t the last time she would get to catch the glance of one of the big cats in the wild, but she’ll always remember it as the moment she knew she belonged in this country.

A true adventurer and horizon seeker herself, who spent many years exploring the country before she set up her business, we caught up with Sylwia to find out which safaris met her list of favourites.

PERSONAL FAVOURITE SAFARI After almost a decade of touring, Sylwia reveals that her favourite safari route is the three to four day Selous Game Reserve trip. She describes it as being not as crowded as some of the northern tours, offering nice rustic camps that still provide full privacy such as private showers and toilets. “It’s one of those back to roots safaris,” she explains, “Less about the luxury and more about the experience.”

THE LIONS EYE Beginning with Sylwia’s most memorable safari, which was also her first. She explains that it was during her second stay in Tanzania when she had a day off and decided to use it to see the animals. With her driver Iddi, who it is worthwhile mentioning is now the company’s manager, they went to Mikumi, which was the nearest park. “I didn’t know too much about tourism at the time,” she admits, “And being Polish and having grown up in Europe I was still a little green.” She and Iddi travelled to Mikumi at 4am and immediately started seeing animals. Elephants are notoriously early risers and giraffes only sleep roughly two hours in any given day, so this was a thrilling start to their journey. Then they came across a pride of lions.

84

Selous offers different activities to what can be found in another tour location like the Serengeti. There are boat safaris, more history as it is near to Kilwa, fishing locations and bushwalking. It is also easily accessible from Zanzibar, either from a direct flight from the island or by car from Dar Es Salaam. “It is a good option as an addition to a holiday in Zanzibar and can be connected with a few days on the Kilwa Beach,” she says, “It’s a great tour for elephants, giraffes, hippos, and predators like lions, crocodiles, cheetah and African hunting dogs.”

Maasai with overnight stay and mountain hiking in the Uluguru mountains with a look at the local communities and historic places.”

FUTURE TOURS These favourites have had an influence on the pace of her own tours, and she always makes sure that there is time during the day to stop for lunch in the bush so guests can soak in the surroundings and allow the mind to process the sheer volume of sensory information. In terms of new and future developments to what Hello Tanzania is offering there are a couple of things taking shape.

BECOME A LEADER This programme is being developed and is aimed at travelling in groups, mainly for younger people who have a limited budget. Become A Leader is an offer for people who can organize something by themselves. The leader builds his or her group and we offer discounts and guidance in preparing a travel plan.

“For some new tours I’ve put a little more emphasis on culture and history,” she explains, “For example, I added cultural and history places to the current safaris, like the ones in Selous and Kilwa and a couple of new destinations to visit. These include a daytrip to Bagamoyo, a visit to the

Having shaped many life-changing safaris around his client’s desires, Elisa, founder of Elisomi Tours, opens up regarding his favourites. As it turns out, when it comes to his own favourite excursions, Elisa counts a wildlife safari to view the Great Migrations in the Serengeti, and a relaxing holiday on the blissful beaches of Zanzibar Island to be some of the best.

sites that are located near enough together to be seen in one trip. Namely the Ngorongoro Crater, which formed millions of years ago when a volcano died and imploded, and the great expanse of The Serengeti.

“I’m drawn to the great and authentic experiences of such locations,” he explains, “And find it incredibly humbling to witness the extremely complex ecological systems that generate such beautiful phenomenon.”

HIS CHOICE OF SAFARI He explains that a wildlife safari in the Serengeti offers multiple opportunities including the chance to experience two world-renowned heritage

These locations are flooded by a multitude of wild species and the available tours offer a great chance to witness the world’s largest mammal migration firsthand. The Great Migration involves up to 1.5 million wildebeest and other wild species including zebras, antelopes, lions, leopards, hyenas, and other predators and herbivores as they follow the herds across the land.

86

The shortest possible safari lasts three days but to maximise experience although five to ten days are usually recommended depending on the availability of the client. According to Elisa, five to ten days is a good length of time to get a taste of the diversity of vegetation and the regional climates that can be observed from the cool climates of the highland forests and Ngorongoro to the warm grasslands of the Serengeti. Within this time, a client can also visit other wildlife areas in the northern ecosystem such as Tarangire and Manyara national parks.

“It is an awesome experience to witness so many animals together at one time,” Elisa says, “It is scary, beautiful and awe inspiring.”

HELPING RHINOS How we can all help Pejeta Conservancy, which is home to the last two northern white rhino and the largest black rhino population in East Africa.

Based in the UK and USA with support projects in Kenya and South Africa, we spoke with the organization known as Helping Rhinos. They are doing everything possible to pull this incredible animal back from the brink of extinction and we can all contribute and help. Jill Inglis, fundraising director of Helping Rhinos, spoke with The Logbook regarding what is being done and what can be done to help save these animals from extinction. The charity is specifically involved in antipoaching operations which include dog patrols, air surveillance and a rhino orphanage in Zululand. “Working since 2012, year on year it has increased its partnerships in Africa and increased the working income in support of those partnerships, she says.

THE SUPPORTERS BEHIND THEM

Some of the groups that they work with include the Black Mambas, an all-female anti-poaching unit that also includes a robust educational programme to local community schools. The Zululand Rhino Orphanage which offers care and protection of baby rhino orphans who have lost their mothers due to poaching incidents and Ol

Their cause has attracted prominent support from a number of places. Such as internationally acclaimed wildlife artist Karen Laurence Rowe who helped them secure vital funding for Ol Pejeta Conservancy through the sale of and auction of some of her work.

This comes from those governments who are supporting unscientific and redundant claims, such as China’s consideration of lifting their rhino horn ban, which is frankly so distressing that information about that can be found at the bottom of this article. And poaching is not only done in the dead of the night or in secret. There are organized hunts sponsored by foreigners who pay money to be taken out on safari to shoot a rhino for no other reason than for the joy of killing an endangered and rare animal. Rejoicing at the bloodshed their mentality can be summed up simply by: “I want to kill one before they’re all gone.”

ALL HOPE IS NOT LOST Anti-Poaching efforts are not about fighting fire with fire. You cannot take up a rifle and hunt the hunters because all you are doing is creating a cycle. Instead, anti-poaching is about removing the support for poaching by eliminating the demand. Educating people so that they know what the situation is, making them aware of the consequences and empowering them to make the correct decisions.

CHALLENGES

To change the situation, awareness is vital and is one of the areas where each and every one of us can help. All of us can show our support on social media, all of us can educate ourselves and in doing so help educate others on the situation.

Raising awareness of the plight of the rhino and raising funds to support their work are two constant challenges. These are being overcome by creating partnerships and developing innovative ways to engage with their supporters and the general public.

THE FACTS ABOUT RHINOS

“The more people made aware directly impacts their effectiveness,” Jill says, “The charity is ably guided by CEO Simon Jones and nominated trustees who together ensure a strategy and budget that keeps up to date with the newest and most effective methods of engaging with donors.”

Rhinos have been poached to the point of extinction for their horns. Because of the indifference and ignorance of those who should know better. Raising, spreading awareness and exposing those responsible for the poaching are some of the things that we can do to help. If we remain indifferent, then one day all we will have are images to show future generations. And when they ask where this peaceful, gigantic, beautiful animal went we’ll have to say, “We let them be hunted to death because we believed in magic rhino horn.”

A QUICK RANT FROM THE WRITER Poaching remains the most pressing issue facing rhino. Whereas rhino habitats are shrinking due to climate change and expansion of human populations, this does not come close to the damage inflicted to their numbers by poaching. And this is specifically related to a demand of rhino horn by the ignorant and the idiotic. It is ludicrous that people still believe rhino horn has any medicinal value at all.

HOW ENDANGERED ARE RHINOS? Rhinos are labelled as a critically endangered species. According to figures from Helping Rhinos there are less than 30,000 living in the wild today. At the start of the 20th century, there were

89

WHICH SPECIES OF RHINO IS THE MOST ENDANGERED?

possibly 200,000. Human activity has caused this dramatic decline in rhino numbers. Initially numbers dropped due to hunting, but today the main threats to rhino are poaching and habitat loss.

There are five species of rhino surviving today – Black, White, Greater One-Horned (or Indian), Javan and Sumatran and several sub-species within these groups.

POACHING AND ILLEGAL TRAFFICKING OF RHINO HORN

There are three species of rhino in Asia, two of which are ‘critically endangered’ the Javan and Sumatran rhino. There are only around 65 Javan rhinos left in the world and around 100 Sumatran rhinos. The Javan rhino is one of the rarest large mammals on earth and was declared extinct in Vietnam in 2011.

Poaching and illegal trafficking of rhino horn has increased sharply since 2007 and remains one of the major reasons why rhinos are still endangered today. Poaching is big business, and well organised criminal gangs are now well-equipped to track and kill rhinos. One rhino horn can fetch in excess of an incredible £200,000. Political and economic instability within countries can increase the threat of poaching too.

The Greater One-Horned rhino has increased in numbers up to 3,550 from only 200 in 1900 and is the third Asian species that is listed as ‘vulnerable’. Numbers have increased due to successful conservation efforts, though the species is still poached for its horn in India and Nepal.

Rhino horn trade has been banned under the Convention of International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) since 1977, yet the blackmarket demand for horn is high. Driven by Asian countries, particularly Vietnam and China. It is used in traditional Asian medicine, though there is no scientific evidence at all to suggest that horn is beneficial as a remedy to anything.

The remaining two species are found in Africa. The Black Rhino is ‘critically endangered’. With only around 5,000 remaining. Numbers of Black rhino dropped by a staggering 96% between 1970 and 1995 but thanks to concerted conservation efforts, their numbers are now rising.

More recently, and particularly among the middle and upper-classes of Vietnam, the purchase of rhino horn signifies someone’s wealth and success. It is used as a status symbol.

White rhinos are classified as ‘near threatened’. There are now around 20,000 living across Africa, yet the increase in poaching levels is once again threatening these populations.

www.helpingrhinos.org/rhino-poaching/

The subspecies Western Black rhino and Northern White rhinos are now extinct in the wild. The only two remaining Northern White rhinos live at Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya. The last Northern White male, Sudan, died in March 2018 of agerelated issues. You can read Helping Rhino’s heartfelt tribute to him here: www.helpingrhinos. org/sudan-tribute/

LOSS OF HABITAT Habitat loss is the other major threat to rhino populations. As more and more land is cleared for agriculture there is less available space for rhinos to thrive in. Rhinos need a large area in which to feed and roam. If rhino populations end up fragmented, with no safe ‘corridors’ to travel through, chances of successful breeding and recovery will decline further.

CHINA’S INEXCUSABLE CHANGE OF LAW AND QUICK WITHDRAWAL For the last 25 years China has imposed a ban in the domestic trade of rhino horn and tiger bone. This means that any rhino or tiger product sold or prescribed by a medical official is done so illegally. On 29th October 2018 China’s General Office of the State Council issued a notice that is to allow a controlled trade and use in rhinoceros and tiger parts.

90

The notice goes on to state that

strong potential to increase the level of poaching of wild rhinos in Africa and Asia at a time when official poaching statistics are showing that things are finally improving!

“Except in special circumstances prescribed by law, the country bans all actions involving sales, purchase, use and import or export of rhinoceros, tigers and their related products.”

Having recently been praised internationally for their moves to make illegal any domestic trade in ivory, this announcement came as a shock to many, not only in the conservation world, but within the Traditional Chinese Medicine industry too. In a recent statement, the Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture UK (ATCM) stated that all of its TCM practitioner members (over 700) do not use animal parts in their practices.

But importantly the report also states “Under the special circumstances, regulation on the sales and use of these products will be strengthened... Rhino horns and tiger bones used in medical research or in healing can only be obtained from farmed rhinos and tigers, not including those raised in zoos... Rhino horn and bones from dead tigers can only be used in qualified hospitals by qualified doctors recognized by the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine.”

ATCM has written to Chinese Government to express their concerns over this new policy, as they also believe that the ease of ban on medical use of farmed rhino horn and tiger bone will potentially put wild animals at risk.

WHAT ARE THE NEXT STEPS? Due to public outcry the Chinese Government has halted its plans to lift the ban. However, that in this day and age, a decision like that could even be rationally considered reveals how wide the divide has become between those creating the demand and those trying to save animals from becoming extinct.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR RHINOS? It is important to note that the State Council’s notice clearly stipulates that only horn from farmed rhinoceros within China can be used by the qualified and recognized individuals. It points out that zoo animals cannot be used under the new law, meaning that not all captive bred rhinos can be used to supply the new, legal demand.

The only logical way forward is to completely ban the trade of any endangered animal parts, including those animals that are “nearly” endangered.

But this would not mean it is good news for rhinos (or tigers) China claims that by making this change in the law they would be able to better control the use of wildlife parts in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and consequently reduce the demand for illegally harvested body parts of rhino and tiger.

Helping Rhinos will maintain a collaboration with organisations around the world to bring an end to the current rhino poaching crisis. Despite this announcement from China they firmly believe that the innovative approach of our projects in the field will ensure that they create a future for rhinos in their natural habitat.

But history tells us that even a carefully controlled legal market will not reduce demand for wild animal parts. We have consistently seen a price premium for TCM that uses wild animals. Legalizing even a potentially small market legitimizes the use of rhino horn far more than has been the case for the last 25 years and provides a loophole for the black-market to exploit.

Without doubt, any legal trade opens up the possibility of laundering illegally poached rhino horn into the legal stockpiles. This new law has the
