The northeastern corner of Minnesota shares an international border with Canada. To the east, the rugged shoreline of Lake Superior’s North Shore is awe-inspiring. Four distinct communities dot the shoreline; SchroederTofte-Lutsen (the West End), the quaint harbor village of Grand Marais, historic Grand Portage, and further inland lies the Gunflint Trail. No matter how you travel, your journey here is part of the adventure.

Getting Here

By Car

From the Twin Cities (240 mi) and Duluth (80 mi) Head north on Interstate 35 through Duluth. Then Highway 61/North Shore All-American Scenic Drive through numerous beautiful communities until you reach Cook County.

From Thunder Bay, Ontario (100 mi/160 km)

Follow Highway 61 south to the Canada/U.S. border and continue until you reach Cook County.

By Air

Fly directly to the state-of-the-art regional airport near Grand Marais, or utilize the nearby seaplane base. For commercial flights, fly into Minneapolis/St. Paul (MSP), Duluth (DLH) or Thunder Bay, Ontario (YQT) and enjoy the drive.

By Water

Take the path less traveled and navigate by boat or sailboat to Cook County. The Lake Superior Water Trail extends 150 miles from Duluth to the Canadian Border.

A LIVING HISTORY

TheNorth Shore of Lake Superior is rich with scenic beauty and human history. Located within the traditional cultural homelands of the Lake Superior Ojibwe, the landscape balances the waters that surround us. Before gravel roads and paved highways, the people traveled by water. The design and use of Kevlar canoes today originate from the birchbark jiimaanan handbuilt by Ojibwe people, and the metal fishing boats that pull in fresh catches of herring are related to the wooden herring skiffs that early European settlers built to harvest Lake Superior fish from spring to fall. The lake trout, herring, coho salmon, steelhead, menominee and

whitefish from the waters of Gichigaming (Lake Superior) have been nourishing families and visitors for centuries. It is just one of many North Shore resources that continue to sustain our way of life and contribute to the living culture of this region.

Early industry on the North Shore was in the fur trade, with operations centered at Grand Portage (Gichi Onigaming), referencing the “great carrying place,” an 8.5-mile portage that circumvents the tallest waterfall in Minnesota--High Falls and the upper Partridge Falls on the Pigeon River. This ancient travel route used by

Indigenous people for thousands of years allowed French Voyageurs access to the interior lakes and river systems known as the Border Route. From 1784 to 1803, the North West Company’s inland headquarters was located at Grand Portage, the largest fur trade depot in the heart of the continent. And every year in late summer, the Grand Portage Ojibwe host an annual Pow-Wow and Rendezvous to celebrate the significance of Gichi Onigaming and the resilience of the Grand Portage Anishinaabeg. The chain of lakes and rivers that straddle the U.S. and Canadian border, from Lake Superior inland to Saganaga Lake and beyond, continue to serve as travel routes for visitors to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and are enjoyed by cabin owners and visitors to the many outfitters, lodges and retreats on the Gunflint Trail. Gichi Bitobig is the Ojibwe name for Grand Marais, a town built at the intersection of two beautiful bays. A seasonal fishing village for hundreds of years, Addikonse (Little Caribou) was a pre-colonial leader who lived at Grand Marais in the mid-1800s. He was the last of the Ojibwe chiefs to sign the Treaty of 1854, which ceded approximately 5.5 million acres of Ojibwe homeland to the U.S. Government. By the mid-1800s, local industry shifted from the fur trade and into logging, land acquisition and mineral prospecting. For many years, the North Shore harbors served as export hubs for massive amounts of timber, with thousands of acres of old-growth White Pine sold to help build the cities of Chicago, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, St. Paul, Duluth and Superior. Today, the forest continues to provide resources for area loggers and builders, while also being an endless source of inspiration for writers, photographers and other artists—from Plein Air painters and potters to jazz guitar virtuosos and puppeteers—the North Shore arts community has it all. In winter time, the slopes along the Superior Highlands provide downhill and cross country skiers and snowboarders with extraordinary views of Lake Superior, and snowmobile trails connect riders with the winter landscape from Lutsen to Grand Portage. Here on the North Shore, visitors can experience the small and friendly places that carry on the rich traditions of people who have lived on the North Shore for thousands of years—communities shaped by the waterways, rugged landscapes and unique beauty of the remote, boreal forests that surround us. From the Sugar Maple stands that flourish on the ridges of the Superior Highlands to the majestic White Pines that stand guard over rocky outcrops all along the ancient water routes, this is a place where stories and histories are alive with beauty, cultural diversity and the lure of what is around the next corner.

Whether you’re in the Boundary Waters—which, at 1.1 million acres, is certified as the world’s largest Dark Sky Sanctuary—or along Lake Superior, you can make your stargazing experience extra memorable with these tried-and-tested tips.

CHECK THE FORECAST

The best viewing is during clear nights with little to no moonlight. Once your eyes adjust to the soft starlight, you’ll be amazed at the wonders of the night sky. You can also check specific aurora forecasts to know when you have the best odds of catching a glimpse.

BUNDLE UP

Heads up! Northern Minnesota nights get chilly. We highly recommend dressing in layers. During summer, your favorite fleece will do. Come winter, pile it on! The dark skies last longer in the winter, so it’s worth bundling up to brave the weather.

LOOK NORTH

Find a spot with a clear view to the north, a place without hills or trees blocking your line of sight. When in doubt, use a compass to be sure you’re looking north, and don’t be afraid to ask a local for recommended viewing spots. We’re always happy to share.

NO LIGHTS

Your eyes need time to adjust to the natural darkness, so be sure to turn off car lights, house lights and flashlights, and keep your cell phone screen dim. If you need light, a red-colored glow will protect your night vision and won’t disrupt others.

EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED

If you’re hunting auroras, you’re likely to see green-yellow or smoke-like white-gray displays, but deep purples and vivid reds also appear in Cook County from time to time. You may also see clear views of the Milky Way, orbiting satellites, faraway planets and stars you’ve never seen before.

GUNFLINT TRAIL

NatiOnal GeOgraphic has named the BWCAW as One Of the wOrld’s “50 Places Of a Lifetime.” It’s nO wOnder the area is a key attractiOn.

Take a drive up the Trail is a message repeated to many visitors who stop by our information centers year after year. The Gunflint Trail National Scenic Byway (County Road 12) is a 57-mile paved roadway that begins in Grand Marais and skirts the Canadian border at its most northern points. Originally, the Gunflint Trail was a footpath developed into a dirt road in the late 1800s. Now a paved byway, the “Trail” winds its way inland, following the path created long ago.

The Gunflint Trail is most notably known as a gateway into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW). Iconic Gunflint pines stand majestically as nature’s archway and while paddling draws many visitors, the vast wilderness is accessible to all with many bordering cabins, lodges and resorts to book your stay. The wildlife, the forest, the water and the quietness are waiting for you any time of year.

Getting to the Gunflint Trail is easy. Drive the North Shore Scenic Byway of Highway 61 to Grand Marais and with one simple turn, you will find yourself climbing over the Sawtooth Mountain ridgeline into the vast boreal forest. With every season, the Gunflint Trail offers different adventures. Spring wakes slowly in the northland, and as the last tentacles of ice pull away from the shorelines and stubborn snow drifts melt, the green of summer makes a grand entrance.

Chik-Wauk Museum and Nature Center near the end of the trail opens on Memorial Day and offers historical and nature exhibits, outdoor hiking trails and children’s programs.

Make sure to set your alarm and enjoy the grandeur of the Milky Way and the dance of the northern lights. Most visitors choose spring, summer or fall to paddle in the pristine waters of the BWCAW, but those who brave a winter trip into the wilderness come out with experiences unlike any other.

Warm summer nights under the dancing northern lights are magical, and winters on the Gunflint bring a dreamlike snow globe to life. With over 180 km of groomed Nordic ski trails on three major trail systems, numerous lakes for ice fishing, snowmobiling or dog sledding, you’ll find adventure at every turn. At the end of the day, return to a toasty fire at one of the many lodges dotting the Gunflint Trail.

Our parks are home to countless miles of trails that take you into the wild heart of Cook County. For most of the year, you can hike, bike and OTV/ATV

through rugged terrain, and when the snow falls, our trails transform into a winter wonderland for cross country skiing, snowshoeing, fat tire biking, dog sledding, skijoring and snowmobiling. Further inland, in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW), you can paddle a canoe or kayak and portage through our state’s most remote wilderness area.

TEMPERANCE RIVER STATE PARK

Just one mile northeast of Schroeder on Highway 61, this park boasts incredible trails for hikers of all abilities and stunning views of the Temperance River Gorge. CASCADE RIVER STATE PARK

Eight miles northeast of Lutsen on Highway 61 lies the Cascade River State Park and endless opportunities for adventure. View the beautiful waterfalls that create Cascade Falls, then trek to the dramatic, multi-tiered gorge section known as the “Cascades.” Stop often to take in the gorgeous views or to cast a line out for fish.

JUDGE C.R. MAGNEY STATE PARK

Head northeast of Grand Marais on Highway 61 for 14 miles to find this wonderful state park. Go birding, fish for trout and hike the 2.5-mile loop along the Brule River to see Devil’s Kettle Falls, a spooky split waterfall that pours into a hole that was once thought to be bottomless.

GRAND PORTAGE STATE PARK

Located right on the border between the U.S. and Canada, this state park is also home to High Falls, the tallest waterfall in Minnesota. At 120 feet, High Falls is one of the most incredible features of the Pigeon River, and it’s accessible via a half-mile barrier-free boardwalk.

GRAND PORTAGE NATIONAL MONUMENT

Explore the history of the fur trade and the original native peoples (Anishinaabe) of our region through the historic fort and interpretive center supported by the national parks service. Hike the Grand Portage, an 8.5-mile trek from the wilderness interior to Lake Superior that was historically used to bypass the high falls and cascades of the Pigeon River, or take in the view of Grand Portage Bay from the Mount Rose Trail.

ISLE ROYALE NATIONAL PARK

While Isle Royale National Park is technically in Michigan waters, the island archipelago is just 22 miles from Grand Portage. Known as Minong to the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, the archipelago is ancestral land with deep cultural connections. Visitors are welcome to take a day trip by ferry or embark on a multi-day adventure on the island for fishing, kayaking, hiking, boating, birding and more. Explore historic sites, including lighthouses, copper mining sites and shipwrecks.

NORTH COUNTRY NATIONAL SCENIC TRAIL

The North Country National Scenic Trail is the longest in the National Trails System, stretching 4,800 miles across eight states from North Dakota to Vermont. Cook County’s portion traverses along the north shore of Lake Superior via the Superior Hiking Trail and inland on the Border Route and Kekekabic Trails in the BWCAW.

BOUNDARY WATERS CANOE AREA WILDERNESS

Over one million acres of pure wilderness bordering Canada, the BWCAW is Minnesota’s largest wilderness. No traffic or ringing phones, just nature. Traveling by canoe or kayak connects visitors with the area’s rich history. Designated as a Dark Sky Sanctuary, it offers some of the darkest skies in the world.
