NEVER MISS OUT The Arts Council’s new, upgraded CULTUREFOX events guide is now live. Free, faster, easy to use – and personalised for you. Never miss out again.

A note from our Artistic Director JULIE KELLEHER Here we are again on the brink of summer – it seems the early part of 2016 passed in the bat of an eyelid! The past few months have been awash with commemorative events, and our programme was no different – we hope you enjoyed the range of shows on offer, and the various perspectives they put forth. For our part, we’re taking something of a break from the centenary for the coming months and bringing you a season of such strong theatre titles, we can’t quite believe it – we are spoiled for choice! This season showcases the work of some of Ireland’s finest established and emerging playwrights. All this theatre has been generously seasoned with plenty of variety in comedy and music, and the additional spice of circus and puppetry shows. Two fantastic highlights bookend the season, the first of which is Cork Midsummer Festival. Festival time is always hotly anticipated, but this year’s Cork Midsummer brings a palpable sense of promise. We’re delighted to be presenting a range of work in conjunction with the festival, including an unmissable update of a classic with Jungle Book from Metta Theatre (UK) (clue: it has street dance, circus and beatboxing!), a visit from award-winning queen of counter-culture Penny Arcade (USA), and a welcome return for Cork’s favourite chanteuse, Camille O’Sullivan. At the opposite end of the season, in September, you can look forward to the much longedfor return of Druid, with their anniversary production of Martin McDonagh’s The Beauty Queen of Leenane, starring company stalwarts Aisling O’Sullivan and Marie Mullen. I’m thrilled to say that I am returning to the rehearsal room this summer to direct a new production of Frank McGuinness’s superb debut play, The Factory Girls. Thirty-odd years on, this play and its themes continue to resonate: recession, redundancies, lay-offs and the power of collective action. We’re putting together a superb ensemble cast who will deliver every ounce of wit and banter that gives this wonderful play its real joy. As ever, we’re supporting the finest local theatre talent and bringing you revivals of two of the most interesting new works made in Cork in the past 6 months. Both pieces have the fact of a real-life central character in common, but beyond that are hugely different. In Alice Barry’s Violet Gibson: The Woman Who Shot Mussolini, we bear witness to the hopes and aspirations of a fiercely intelligent and

deeply misunderstood individual whose obscure adventures are well worth the watch. And perhaps slightly better known are the public exploits of Michael Collins and his diplomatic efforts in London during the War of Independence, but in A Great Arrangement we have the intriguing addition of his private correspondence with Kitty Kiernan. Hearing the real words of such monumental historical figures gave me goosebumps and I’m sure you’ll be no different. We’re also tickled pink to announce that we will premiere the music of John O’Brien’s new opera, The Nightingale and the Rose, based on the Oscar Wilde story of the same name. This will be a very special, one-off concert event, featuring Cara O’Sullivan and many other bright lights of Irish opera. And in amongst all of that there is: Music! Circus! Look out for Karen Underwood and Friends, Des Bishop, Two and a Half Tenors, Don Baker & Clara Rose, A Night in Venice, Circus Of Horrors, Tales of the Unseen, Cork Puppetry Festival and the Everyman debut of Cork Comedy Festival. Last but by no means least, we’re bringing the finest touring theatre from around the country. Decadent returns with Conor McPherson’s The Weir; the wonderful Mary McEvoy and Jon Kenny reprise their hilarious turns in John B. Keane’s The Matchmaker; Belfast-based Prime Cut Productions bring us the Irish Times Theatre Award Winner for Best New Play: Scorch by Stacey Gregg, Keegan Theatre Company visit with American Buffalo, and an old Cork favourite Disco Pigs by Enda Walsh, an exciting new production all the way from London. We can’t wait for you to see it all.

Decadent Theatre Company, in association with Town Hall Theatre Galway, the Everyman Cork, and Pavilion Theatre, Dún Laoghaire presents

The Weir BY CONOR MCPHERSON On a stormy night in Brendan’s pub, isolated above a Leitrim town, the men are gathering for their daily pint. The arrival of a stranger in their midst – a beautiful woman – spurs them to impress her with stories. They are stories of souls past, spirits present and spectres unforeseen. One story, however, is more haunting, more sinister and more real than any of them could have foreseen. Quietly compelling and strangely chilling, The Weir is the perfect story for a summer’s night. Decadent’s production marks a major Irish revival and national tour of this undoubted modern classic.

The Everyman presents

The Factory Girls BY FRANK MCGUINNESS The Factory Girls tells the story of five working women: hardy ringleader Ellen and factory veteran Una, sharp-tongued Vera, dark horse Rebecca and baby of the bunch, Rosemary. Under the threat of devastating job loss, the “girls” take matters in to their own hands. During the course of their adventure, they discover who and what really counts when the chips are down. Set in the recessionary early 80’s, the play still resonates with so much of what affects us politically, socially, and personally; recession, redundancies, lay-offs and the power of collective action. The play was the stunning debut of Frank McGuinness, one of Ireland’s greatest living playwrights, and was first produced in 1982. Presented by the same team that brought you Brian Friel’s Lovers in 2015, The Factory Girls will feature a superb ensemble cast who will deliver every ounce of wit and banter that gives this wonderful play its real joy.

Violet Gibson

The Woman Who Shot Mussolini

Tue 16 – Sat 20 Aug 8pm

BY ALICE BARRY In 1926 Irish aristocrat Violet Gibson (aged 49) shot Benito Mussolini, the Italian Prime Minister. ‘Fancy, a woman!’ Benito exclaimed, making light at having been shot by this insignificant little old lady. Everyone except Violet thought it was madness. Her fate hinged on whether she would stand trial as a political criminal or be declared insane. We hear Violet’s account of her absurd life governed by illness, death and the shackles of a male-dominated Victorian society. Her questioning nature will not let her fiddle and twiddle her days away with nosegays and needlepoint, and like Florence Nightingale she strives to achieve something meaningful in her life. Psychological exploration brings her to religion and moral obligation. Is Violet mad, bad or neither? Can society benefit by listening to the people who stand alone and bold? The play explores the dangers of demoralizing citizens by creating minorities, and the instability of moral judgement.

The Everyman is one of Ireland’s leading middle scale presenting and producing theatres. Originally opened in 1897, it is the oldest purpose built theatre building in Cork. A jewel of late Victorian architecture, the theatre is steeped in history and is a favourite with audiences and performers alike for its intimacy and atmosphere.

THE PALACE BAR

The Palace Bar is the perfect venue for your pre-show drink and opens each performance night at 7pm. Enjoy a beverage of your choice in the intimate surroundings of this beautiful little gem. Please note we take interval orders before the show to avoid any rush at the break. And don’t worry if you don’t finish your drink in the time allowed, we will look after it until the end of the show or you can choose to take it with you in the plastic cups on offer. Don’t forget us after the performance as we remain open after every show to give you the chance to chat and rub shoulders with the actors and directors.

EXCHANGE & REFUND

Tickets can only be refunded in the event of a show being cancelled or a change of date and time. Tickets can be exchanged, subject to availability, for another performance within the same run up to 24 hours before the original performance booked. Exchanges are subject to an 80 cent charge per ticket up to a maximum of €4.

WEDDINGS

Would you like to get married on the stage of The Everyman? For civil weddings, give us a call and we can talk you through the possibilities.

DONATIONS You can now donate to the Everyman when booking tickets online. Every donation no matter how small can make a really big difference. The Everyman is a not for profit organisation. We rely on grant aid from government bodies, box office revenue and the generosity of individuals and business to enable us to do what we do and do it well.

PLEASE NOTE: The Everyman reserves the right to vary the advertised programme or cast if necessary. Latecomers may only be admitted at a suitable break in the performance and at the discretion of management.
