NEVER MISS OUT The Arts Council’s new, upgraded CULTUREFOX events guide is now live. Free, faster, easy to use – and personalised for you. Never miss out again.
A note from our Artistic Director JULIE KELLEHER Though we have endured a particularly miserable summer, I must say that it has felt as if the sun has been shining here at the Everyman as you have come out to support us in such numbers this summer, and in particular to support the home-grown efforts of some brilliant Cork artists. This coming season is absolutely bursting with as broad a range of delights as you’ll see on a Cork stage this Autumn. That’s because this is your theatre, The Everyman, and we’re doing everything we can to make sure there’s something for everyone to enjoy. So without further ado – the season highlights! Sligo’s finest Blue Raincoat Theatre pay a visit with their acclaimed production of The Playboy of the Western World. Fishamble returns after another award-winning run at the Edinburgh Fringe with Cork’s own Pat Kinevane and his trilogy: Forgotten, Silent and Underneath. This will be the first opportunity to see all three shows in a single week – they are truly unmissable. And for the best in singalong and laughalong entertainment, we look forward to a brand new production of Menopause The Musical, starring Mary Byrne, Linda Nolan, Niamh Kavanagh and Sue Collins. We are hugely grateful for your support which enables us to offer opportunities to local theatre artists to show their excellent work on the Everyman stage. Kicking off our Autumn season, in our 25th year is the Everyman Theatre Company’s production of The Outgoing Tide by American playwright Bruce Graham which stars Michael Twomey and is certain to impress. We are delighted that playwright Liam Heylin has allowed us to produce the premiere of his whip smart new comedy, Hung Juror, which combines Liam’s intimate knowledge of the Irish court system and his brilliant way with the Cork turn of phrase! We’re getting in the festival spirit with the Guinness Cork Jazz Festival and new kid on the block Sounds From A Safe Harbour, and music fans can also look forward to visits from Honor Heffernan, John Spillane and the much-loved Sunday Songbook
series. Comedy lovers should get in line now for the cracking new show Separated at Birth from PJ Gallagher and newcomer Joanne McNally, and watch the worlds of improv and ventriloquism collide with hilarious results as Live At The Apollo favourite Nina Conti makes her first appearance at the Everyman. There are some sparklingly special treats for small people and their grown-ups this Autumn. Join us during the midterm break for a magical new production of Frances Hodgson Burnett’s classic tale of transformation, The Secret Garden, brought to us by superb local company BrokenCrow. And of course, it just wouldn’t be Christmas without our annual panto – the genie granted us our wish and this year’s show is family favourite Aladdin! Last but by no means least, there is a jam-packed calendar of the best of touring theatre, including the exciting new Decadent production of awardwinning novel-turned-play, Vernon God Little, the sharp wit of Alan Ayckbourn in the London Classic Theatre production of Absent Friends, and a highly recommended gem, straight from taking the Edinburgh Fringe by storm, is Rough Magic’s How To Keep An Alien written by and starring Sonya Kelly – you’ll be hard pressed to find a funnier or more heart-warming 70 minutes all year. So now it’s over to you – to treat yourself and get booking!

MEET OUR TEAM
Sean Spillane / Technical Crew Favourite thing about working at The Everyman
What I do: I am a jack of all trades really. Over the past ten years I have dabbled in various areas of the production side of theatre including lighting, sound, set building, stage management. I have even appeared on stage myself in walk on parts during CADA’s annual pantomime as a henchman, a village helper and even as a palace assistant dressed head to toe in luminous dungarees and a wig. However, my main work is as backstage crew and I love it. The comradery amongst the crew is always a delight and I have worked with some great and talented individuals over the years. I am normally responsible for the fit up of shows which includes unloading the stage trucks and building many different and exciting theatrical worlds. During the run of many shows I would also work backstage assisting in the set and scene changes which is always an exciting time.
I particularly enjoy assisting in the building of different stage sets – from old rural Irish cottages to Italian/German opera spectaculars and from the battlefields of the War of Independence to the magical lands of pantomime. I have seen many different worlds come together on the Everyman stage and I am proud to have been part of their construction. Overall though, it is the people that I get to interact with, help and share the creative process with that makes my job worthwhile. I have worked with many exciting production companies including CADA, Abbey on Tour, Triangle Productions, Druid and Corcadorca as well as many exceptionally talented home grown and international actors and singers. Every day is a different day working in the theatre and you never know what colourful world you’re going to be immersed in next which is always exciting and invigorating. Best Moment My cameo roles in the Everyman panto. Favourite show It’s The Real McCoy
