A Run in the Park It is not often, but now and then the question is asked of those of us who live here – “Why do you live in Door County?” Depending upon the time of year, time of day, or mood the answer is slightly different, but it always seems to come back to the same thing – we love it here. There is the natural beauty, the history, the arts, the social programs, the educational opportunities – but those are just over-arching themes that would not be as splendid or successful as they are without the Door County community. When a historical building is in disrepair, when a natural wonder is threatened, when our economy is in decline, when art and culture are needed, and especially when a member of our community is sick, Door County comes together. From the construction of health care facilities, to the maintenance and preservation of vast open spaces, to the raising of money to pay hospital bills and medical care, the combined accomplishments of this community are immense. The first Saturday in May is no different. The community comes out in force to volunteer at the aid stations, pack packets, hand out registrations and shirts, cheer louldly along the course and finish and run. The races would not be possible without the generosity of this community. Enjoy our community, enjoy the run! David Eliot Co-Founder, Door County Half Marathon Publisher, Peninsula Pulse

HALF MARATHON The Door County Half Marathon will start at 10 am on May 7. The entire half marathon is run on paved surfaces in Peninsula State Park. The U.S. Track and Field certified course starts and finishes near Nicolet Beach. The course takes runners past breathtaking views of Green Bay, shaded areas through the woods, challenging hills and everchanging scenery through one of Wisconsin’s most beautiful and historic parks. MP3 players are allowed for the race, but sorry, no dogs or strollers are allowed on the course due to space and safety concerns. Walkers are welcome and should plan to finish by the time the course opens to traffic at 1:30 pm. Walkers should be aware that if your pace is slower than 16 minutes per mile, not all course amenities may be available later in the race, since time constraints require us to break down aid stations to re-open the park roads. All half marathon participants receive a longsleeve t-shirt, a finisher’s medal, and food and drink in the Runners’ Concourse area. Runners also receive a drink ticket good for a beer or root beer at four of our sponsor restaurants (see post-race party details).

Hannah Knurr of Madison dominated the 2015 Door County Half Marathon on the women’s side. Not only did she top the previous course record by 1:10, but her time of 1:24:20 was more than six minutes faster than her closest competitor.

Southern Door native Brian Finnel returned to the Door County Half Marathon in 2015, winning the race for the second time in 1:11:26. Finnel also won the race in 2012.

NICOLET BAY 5K The Nicolet Bay 5k begins at 10:15 am, just after the start of the half marathon. The starting line is also on Shore Road, but a few hundred yards from the start of the half marathon. Runners will follow the out and back course to the Eagle Bluff Lighthouse, where they will turn around for the finishing kick to the same finish line as the half marathoners. MP3 players are allowed, but sorry, no dogs or strollers are allowed on the course due to space and safety concerns. Walkers are welcome in the 5k. All participants will receive a t-shirt as well as food and drink in the Runners’ Concourse areas. Runners also receive a drink ticket good for a beer or root beer at four of our sponsor restaurants (see post-race party details).

We’ve assembled a fantastic team of medical personnel, Emergency Medical Responders, and athletic trainers to make sure every runner has access to the best assistance and care possible. In order to facilitate care by our staff in case of an emergency or other event we ask that you provide some basic medical information on the back of your Bib Number. In the case of an emergency, seconds count! Please take a moment to write your name, address, and emergency contact information on the back of your runner’s bib. If you have any significant health issues, allergies, or are taking medications, please list them as well. This is an important first step in providing pertinent information that will expedite decision making and care on your behalf. We hope we never have to make use of this information, but if we do, it will help our staff provide you with the best care possible. Thank you for being a part of the Door County Half Marathon!

OFFICIAL GUIDE 2016 DOOR COUNTY HALF MARATHON & NICOLET BAY 5K | SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT PENINSULA PULSE
After you arrive in the park • The Runners’ Concourse is located near Nicolet Beach, just look for the big tents. Here you will find packet pickup, runner bag drop-off area, concessions and gear sales. • Porta-johns will be located in the Runners’ Concourse as well as at the starting line and just before each aid station. • Take a moment to locate the starting line for your race. (see map) • Your cell phone may not work in the park. Designate a location to meet with family and friends after the race.
On the course • Porta-johns will be located at the starting line and just before each aid station. • The safest place to warm up for the half marathon is on the course from the finish line to the two-mile mark. This section of the course will be closed early to all traffic. Photo by Len Villano.
Getting to the Park • There are two ways to get to Peninsula State Park, carpool or ride the shuttle. • If you carpool you must have an annual or daily Wisconsin State Park parking sticker. Annual stickers are available at both the Fish Creek and Ephraim park entrances. The Fish Creek entrance is only open until 9 am. We suggest that you purchase your annual sticker before race day to avoid delays. Daily stickers are available at packet pickup on Friday or at the Fish Creek or Ephraim entrances. Parking is limited! • Both participants and spectators may ride the shuttle to the park. Sorry, dogs are not allowed on the shuttles. Please see the schedule for details.
• Aid stations will have water and original Gatorade. Caffeine-free vanilla and berry Clif Shot Gel packs will be available at the aid station located near mile 8. Medical personnel will be on site.
Important race notes • Running with another person’s bib is not allowed. You are, however, able to transfer your bib - please contact the Registration Director. • Your timing chip is affixed to your bib. To ensure that your race time is recorded, bibs must be affixed to the front of your torso and should not be covered by another layer of clothing. Affixing your bib to the side of your shorts or your back greatly reduces reliability of the timing chip. • If you do not run in the race that you signed up for, your results will not be valid.
• Plan to arrive at Peninsula State Park between 8 and 9:15 am to avoid delays getting to the starting line. You may use the Fish Creek entrance until 9 am. The Ephraim entrance will remain open. Park Greeters will assist you at each entrance.
• If you have any questions regarding your registration, please ask at packet pickup.
• At 9:45 am all course roads inside the park will be closed to all traffic except shuttle buses and emergency vehicles. All roads will re-open at 1:30 pm.
• For the safety of all runners, strollers and dogs are not allowed on the course in either race. Runners on the course with strollers or dogs will be removed from the course by race officials.

Bikes, Beer, and Brass at 5th Door County Beer Festival
The Door County Beer Festival and Peninsula Century Spring Classic are creating an even bigger party this June 18 in Baileys Harbor. Kyle Cherek, host of Wisconsin Foodie, will return to host a Beer Breakfast and forum for VIP ticket-holders at the Door County Beer Festival, held in conjunction with the 28th annual Peninsula Century Spring Classic bicycle ride. The ride starts and finishes on the grounds of the festival and includes fully supported routes of 25, 50, 62 and 100 miles. “Our VIP ticket-holders will explore the world of breakfast and coffee stouts and ciders over breakfast with Kyle, who will lead a discussion of the state of local sourcing for brewers and restaurants,” explains co-organizer Myles Dannhausen Jr. “Then we’ll give them exclusive access to the tasting tent before the crowds roll in.” Dannhausen also announced that Madison-based Mama Digdown’s Brass Band will parade through the grounds to bring a new sound to the event. The festival has quickly become a favorite of brewers and beer aficionados who love the curious and

Pace team on hand to guide runners The 2016 Door County Half Marathon pace team will be led by experienced marathon pacer and Baileys Harbor resident Krista Eliot. Eliot has added a 2:20 pace team this year due to demand. Eliot has paced for both the New Balance and Nike Pace teams for 10 years, which has included pacing the Chicago Marathon each year since 2005. A veteran of 36 marathons (including 12 Bostons), Eliot’s PR is 3:09. Our team includes many runners who have paced the half marathon in the past, as well as Chicago, Fox Cities, Green Bay and many other major marathons and half marathons. At the starting line the pacers will hold signs with finish goal times on them so runners can find their pace, slotting runners in a more organized fashion and avoiding confusion. This helps spread out runners at the start and alleviate the problem of slower runners lining up too close to the front of the pack and getting run over by faster runners behind them. Here are the goal finish times and team members who will be there to help you from start to finish. Meet some of our pacers at Packet Pickup at the Ephraim Village Hall Friday from 1 - 9 pm, and look for their signs on race day and use them to help you meat your race goal! 1:45 1:50 1:55 2:00 2:05 2:10 2:15 2:20 2:25

My TEAM TRIUMPH is a non profit athletic mentoring program created for people with disabilities who would normally be unable to participate in endurance events. Teams of “Angels” help their Captain athlete complete races by pushing them in specialized wheelchairs, pulling them behind bikes, and swimming with them in rafts to complete half marathons, triathlons, cycling events, and endurance events short and long. The Door County Silent Sports Alliance, in cooperation with the races of the Door Peninsula, presents the 2016 Run the Door Points Series. Participation is free. Sign up to have your points tabulated throughout the year by e-mailing your name, hometown, age, gender and e-mail address to runthedoor@gmail. com. For complete information, go to www. runthedoor.com.
How it Works Registered runners score points in two ways each time you participate in a race on the circuit. You still register for individual races the way you always have. 1. You score 10 points for participating, no matter what place you take in any given race. 2. You score 3, 2, or 1 points if you take first, second or third respectively in your age group. The Door County Silent Sports Alliance will keep track of points. The top 10 men and top 10 women overall at the end of the year will receive awesome pottery awards. The top three Out-of-County men and women also will win awards. Remaining registered runners will be eligible for other prizes. Lace up those shoes. We’ll see you at the races!

Behind the Scenes Running Your Way to Better Mental Health We all know the physical benefits of a half marathon or 5K training regimen, but what about running’s effects on mental health? Barb Johnson-Giese, LCSW, behavioral health coordinator at Ministry Door County Medical Center, says exercise is a key component to maintaining and improving mental health. Research shows people who exercise regularly benefit from a positive boost in mood and lower rates of depression. What’s more, the training process itself can benefit athletes’ mental health, especially during the dark days of winter and Door County’s late-coming spring.

Our Volunteer Team They Inspire Without Ever Crossing the Finish Line By MYLES DANNHAUSEN JR., Assistant Race Director
“There are many runners who look forward to this event as the kick-off to the silent sport season,” says Myles Dannhausen, assistant race director for the Door County Half Marathon. “Wisconsin winters can be mentally tough, and events like this can be huge for pulling people through them.”
The “runner’s high” athletes often describe is real. Exercise triggers the release of endorphins, natural painkillers that also trigger positive feelings. Regular exercise has been proven to not only reduce stress and anxiety, but improve sleep and boost self-esteem. Runners who train with a group have the added benefit of social connection – also a proven factor in preventing depression. The scenic beauty of Peninsula State Park adds another level to this natural approach to mental health. A recent study in the Journal of Environmental Science & Technology showed green exercise (exercise in the presence of nature) can lead to positive mental health outcomes too. “There are so many reasons why Ministry supports silent sporting events,” says Johnson-Giese, “and improved community mental health is just one of them.”

One of the best parts of working the Door County Half Marathon is coming together with such a fantastic group of volunteers each year. From Girl Scouts to high school track teams and from business owners to visitors who just want to be a part of the event, we get to spend the week with some of the best people in our community and beyond. More than 200 volunteers help us put this event together each May,
and no matter what we throw at them, they respond with enthusiasm and a smile. Some work from dusk till dawn, and we can’t thank them enough. They are the reason this race has such an incredible feel to it, why runners come back year after year, and why we have so much fun putting it together. Please thank them every chance you get!

I couldn’t work either, and the pain was bad.” All that has changed since Schaufer had both knees replaced at the Bone and Joint Center of Door County at Ministry Door County Medical Center. Dr. Dan Tomaszewski performed the surgeries, and Schaufer couldn’t be happier with the results. With the encouragement of his family, doctor and therapists at Ministry’s Sister Bay Rehab facility, he did just that. All the hard work paid off.
