Tommy Castro and the Painkillers will open the 2016 Peg Egan Performing Arts Center summer concert series at 7 pm on June 19. If you like shaking what you’ve got to classic rock, a bit of country and a few polka tunes, check out three-piece rock ‘n roll veterans Rocker. Doug Cayer and Rick Schilke have been rocking the Midwest music circuit since May 1974 and were joined by Kim Slye in 2009. Together with their keyboards, bass keyboard, guitars and vocals, they have shared their love of ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s tunes with thousands of music lovers across the region. Rocker will rock the crowd at Stone Harbor Restaurant & Pub on June 10 from 4 – 8 pm and July 1 starting at 8:30 pm.

Spreading an appreciation for the American-born bluegrass genre is frontand-center in the mission of Door County’s own Highland Road. With Tad Gilster on guitar, Andy Coulson on banjo, Rick Gordon on bass, and Tony Gebauer on mandolin, this foursome has been playing traditional and contemporary bluegrass together under the name Highland Road since 2007.
After several years leading the critically acclaimed, platinum-selling alt-rock band Ben Folds Five in the ‘90s, singersongwriter and record producer Ben Folds has established a successful solo music career, bringing his genre-defying music to the masses through multiple studio albums, live performance and remix records, TV and film scores, and collaborations with stars like Regina Spektor and William Shatner. His latest project was a piano concerto composed with the Nashville Symphony Orchestra, which has inspired a new direction toward performing with symphony orchestras and creating music that overlaps pop and classical worlds, which he has dubbed “chamber rock.” Ben Folds will take to the Door Community Auditorium stage on July 7 at 8 pm.
VANDOLIERS
With few performances on their yearly schedule, you’ll want to catch them live at 7 pm on June 23 at The Cookery in Fish Creek.
Considered “one of the best brass bands, anywhere,” by New Orleans Jazz legend Bob French, the eight-piece Mama Digdown’s Brass Band pays homage to classic NOLA-style street parade sound while also incorporating shout choruses, jazz influence and hip hop inspired riffs into their repertoire. Started in Madison by two former University of Wisconsin music students, they have spent the past two decades spreading the “gospel of New Orleans brass band music” across the globe with five studio albums and another – an album of Michael Jackson covers called Brass Jackson – in the works for a 2016 release. Mama Digdown’s will make its way north for two shows in Door County on June 18, first at the Door County Beer Festival from noon until 2 pm followed by a post-fest party at Door County Brewing Co. from 7 – 9 pm.

The road is home for San Francisco-based blues, soul and West Coast rockers Tommy Castro, Randy McDonald, Michael Emerson and Bowen Brown, of Tommy Castro and
The Zimmer Effect, a rock band founded in January 2015, is one of the musical groups featured in Milwaukee’s Summerfest. The band, which takes its name from its guitarist and songwriter Emily Zimmer, claims to “serve audiences a hot plate of grungy, proggy, groove rock.” The Zimmer Effect takes its inspiration from a wide variety of genres, from metal to R&B. The group’s debut album Hear it Now showcases each of its three members while also creating a blend of drums, bass, guitar, and vocals that produces an entrancing, rhythmic sound. The Zimmer Effect will perform on the Waterfront Park Main Stage as part of Sister Bay’s Concerts In the Park at 6 pm on July 27.
MAL-O-DUA
DEAD SOLDIERS
Forged in the mixing pot of musical styles that is Memphis, Tennessee, American roots rockers Dead Soldiers draw inspiration from rock, soul, outlaw country, bluegrass and blues to “carve out their own dark perspective on what it means to live and die in the American South.” Their songs are peppered with lyrics about anxiety, poverty, politics, history and death, and are lifted up by vocal harmonies, detailed instrumentation, energy and irreverence. Since 2011, the group has included Michael Jasud (lead vocals/guitar), Benjamin Aviotti (vocals/banjo/guitar), Clay Qualls (vocals/bass/mandolin), Krista WrotenCombest (vocals/violin/keys), Nathan Raab (guitar/mandolin/bass/keys), and Paul Gilliam (drums). The Dead Soldiers will make their mark on Door County a few times this summer: at 11 pm on July 2 and Aug. 4 and 5 at Husby’s in Sister Bay, and on Aug. 12 at Door County Brewing Co. in Baileys Harbor.
Ameri-Kinda may not be an actual musical genre, but it seemed to be the best way for the Vandoliers to describe their blend of honky-tonk bar rock. Hailing from Dallas, Texas, the Vandoliers consider themselves a “bunch of tatted up bottom dollar boys making an honest racket for the common man” with the help of electric guitars, fiddles, trumpets and banjos. Their 10-track debut album Ameri-Kinda was released in August 2015. The Vandoliers will perform at Martin Park at 7 pm on July 13 as part of the City of Sturgeon Bay’s Harmony By the Bay concert series.
MULATSÁG
The finger picking duo comprised of Madison residents Cedric Baetche and Christo Ruppenthal takes their name from the French “mal aux doigts,” meaning sore or weary finger from working. MalO-Dua draws on the sounds of Kentucky fingerpicker Merle Travis and French jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt, mingled with other styles including Hawaiian slack key and Parisian waltz. The band is currently working to release a swing album, which follows closely behind their 2015 album Mahalo Dua. The pair’s broad acoustic style and historic anecdotes create a highenergy atmosphere. Mal-O-Dua will make their way up the peninsula to Camp David for their Fishstock Music Series on July 31 at 7 pm.
AURORA BAER Comprised of Marisa Balistreri, Gillian Evanoff, Jordan Koel and Tyler Rindo, Mulatság seeks to recreate the feeling of a night in Paris during the late 1930s. The jazz ensemble plays jazz standards of the ‘20s, ‘30s and ‘40s as well as jazz manouché, or “gypsy jazz” compositions, taking inspiration from Angelo Debarre, Tchavolo Schmitt, Olli Soikkeli, and Lollo Meier. The band’s sound, self-described as “vibrant but intimate,” grants them the ability to play both upbeat dance numbers and romantic ballads.
Aurora Baer, a singer-songwriter from Aitkin, Minnesota, has played with a variety of artists, including violinist T. Bruce Bowers of Big Top Chautauqua. Her

‘ festivals ’ music, which she describes as Americana, draws on folk, blues and jazz influences as well as classic artists such as Johnny Cash and Loretta Lynn to produce soulful ballads. Baer’s haunting voice, sweet harmonica and accompanying guitar showcase her musical aptitude and versatility. Her songs explore love in its various forms and one’s sense of belonging. Aurora Baer will share her talents in Door County during a number of performances in August: at 8 pm on Aug. 8 and 9 at Husby’s, 6 pm on Aug. 11 and 7 pm on Aug. 13 at Kitty O’Reilly’s Irish Pub in Sturgeon Bay, and at noon on Aug. 14 at The Garage at Husby’s.
RADIO FREE HONDURAS
A diverse collective of Chicago musicians, Radio Free Honduras plays the original music of Charlie Baran, who was a founding member of the renowned Honduran musical group Banda Blanca. The group presents Honduran-influenced music with “lively percussion, eclectic instrumentation, and rich harmonies.” Described as “a guitar slinging showman and a gifted songwriter whose skill transcends all genres,” Baran’s talent and passion for music is highlighted as he performs with a rotating band of seasoned musicians. The band will play on Aug. 19 at the Door County Brewing Co. in Baileys Harbor at 7 pm. They will then head to Washington Island to perform at the Trueblood Performing Arts Center on Aug. 20 at 7:30 pm.
WHITE CHOCOLATE
White Chocolate, a five-piece dance band, plays a collection of rock, pop, funk, Motown, swing and contemporary music to keep toes tapping and heads bopping throughout their shows. Every member of White Chocolate has been performing professionally for at least 20 years, and they have played with local acts such as Big Mouth and Bay City Swing as well as national performers like Bobby Vinton and Dizzy Gillespie. The Nashville band is comprised of Terry Iattoni, Craid Hanke, Greg Pagel, Andy Pagel, and David Deon. Catch White Chocolate at Wave Pointe Resort & Marina in Little Sturgeon at 8 pm on Aug. 20.

STEEL BRIDGE SONGFEST
Wisconsin native Katie Scullin describes her sound as a combination of Amy Winehouse, Ann Wilson and Gotye’s Kimbra. Her music and lyrics seek to “deconstruct, reinvent, and refine,” taking a new approach to the indie-pop ballad. The singer-songwriter has received numerous awards, including Summerfest’s Emerging Artists Series Competition Award in 2009. Scullin recently released her new song “Whitney” and is in the process of putting together Pieces, her first full-length album, which will include original songs written over the past eight years. See Scullin live on Aug. 22 from 6 – 8 pm as part of the Evenings in Ephraim series at Harborside Park.

Back for a second year on the grounds of the Door Devils Motorcycle Club in Sturgeon Bay is Burning Cow Music Festival from July 21 – 23. The three-day music and camping fest will showcase 17 emerging and established southern rock, blues, alt-country and jam bands. The summer music festival scene kicks off with the 12th annual Steel Bridge Songfest in Sturgeon Bay from June 9 – 12. Take in freshly created tunes courtesy of more than 100 different musical acts at venues across town. The fest also offers a pub crawl (with Safe Ridge Program) and a two-day “Take It To the Bridge!” outdoor celebration of original music, food and drink. Whitewater-based The Brothers Quinn is fronted by Wisconsin Area Music Industry award-winning fiddle player Blaine McQuinn. Founded in 2011, the fourpiece folk ensemble features washboard, bodhran and harmonica in addition to instruments such as bass and guitar. The group combines elements of bluegrass, Celtic, soul, rock, hip hop and ragtime to create their own distinctive sound. McQuinn is joined by his brother Timothy McQuinn as well as Peyton Lencho and Brian Lucas. The vibrant Brothers Quinn will perform at Juniper’s Gin Joint in Fish Creek on Sept. 2 starting at 9:30 pm.

BLUES ON THE BAY Grammy Award-winning blues legend Billy Flynn returns to the lineup of Ellison Bay’s annual Blues on the Bay festival on Saturday, Aug. 27. Flynn will be joined by contemporary Delta roots-R&Bsoul bluesman Jimmy Burns and swingblues-jazz singer Oscar Wilson, along with Door County favorites Mighty Mouth and Billy Flynn Dirty Deuce. The free concert invites people of all ages to bring lawn chairs and a picnic, and settle in for an afternoon and evening of blues from 3 – 9 pm, Jimmy Burns rain or shine. Freewill donations collected during the event will benefit Door County Secret Santa Inc., a nonprofit organization that helps struggling Door County families Oscar Wilson with their home heating costs.
