ZEN-OUT
“Many urban youth experience significant and unremitting negative stressors, including those associated with community violence, multi-generational poverty, failing educational systems, substance abuse, limited services for success, health risks, and trauma.” These significant, recurrent, and chronic stressors may overwhelm the capacity to cope acutely and chronically, which is required for healthy development and positive trajections in children. Mind-Body therapies are ranked among the top 10 complementary and integrative medicine practices. Mindfulness Meditation aims to enhance an individual’s innate capacity to be purposefully aware of their present-moment emotional, cognitive, and sensory experiences. When tasked with designing a multi-purpose program, Knoxville demographics were studied. Specifically highlighting the educational deficits, it became easy to determine the necessary program for this space. With only 39% of students functioning at or above their grade level and a lack of mindfulness-based after-school programs in Knoxville, it became clear what the program of this space needed to be. By designing a space that prioritizes the emotional wellness of children could be a lifechanging experience for Knoxville’s demographic.

Yoga is more than the practice of asana or physical postures. In Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra, the eightfold path is called ashtanga, which literally means “eight limbs” (ashta=eight, anga=limb). These eight steps, commonly known as the 8 limbs of yoga, basically act as guidelines on how to live a meaningful and purposeful life. They serve as a prescription for moral and ethical conduct and self-discipline; they direct attention toward one’s health; they help us acknowledge our nature’s spiritual aspects. By integrating these principles into the program, we are adding a layer of foundational depth to the purpose of including yoga and meditation in the program.

“Meditation offers a break to children to relax and focus by ‘unplugging,’ helping kids to function more effectively and clearly.” Research on structured meditation programs for children and youth is suggestive of benefits, including improvement in mental health, coping skills, and self-regulation, as well as decreasing the presence of hypertension and negative school behaviors. Journaling helps communicate ideas through writing. Sometimes kids find it easier to express themselves through writing versus oral communication. ... Children have to draw from their vocabulary bank to select precise words to communicate their thinking. Plus, they practice handwriting skills. Therapeutic yoga is the practice of uniting the mind, the body, and the spirit through mindfulness of breathing and body postures to improve stress coping, lessen pain, and improve specific health conditions. Incorporating stress management programs improve academic performance, self-esteem, classroom behaviors, concentration, and emotional balance.

BIRTH OF RE-SALE
About twenty and a half billion garments end up in landfills yearly. With each garment weighing an average of about 3 pounds per item, that yields 61.4 billion pounds of waste into the landfills each year from garments alone. A significant portion of this waste accrues from a horrible habit that many have participated in, single-use. The fashion industry has become one of the most globally pollutive industries, directly contributing to global warming and the environmental crisis. This is where the resale industry could swoop in like the superhero it has the potential to be. If people instead bought one used item this year, it would save 5.7 billion pounds of CO2, which is the equivalent to 66 million trees planted, 25 billion gallons of water, the equivalent of one and a quarter billion showers, and 449 million pounds of waste about 19 thousand garbage trucks full of waste. Only a few companies have started to tap into the resale industry’s potential, with research showing that 52% of people will buy more secondhand fashion than any other sector. Traditional brick-and-mortar retail has value in providing a sense of space and place for consumers; the idea of uniqueness and wanting to stand out has a long-standing reputation in the fashion industry. Goodwill and Salvation Army are some of the earliest examples of resale and donation in retail. The horrifyingly drab and musty warehouse interior norm often is why many people turn their noses up to the resale sector. Resale deserves the aesthetic that draws consumers in, in the way that high-end luxury retailers pull in audiences that often cannot afford to contribute to consumerism because of the astronomical price tags. Resale deserves an exciting and engaging spatial quality while eluding an elegantly pleasing aesthetic, most importantly, using the most sustainable options to accompany the projected market growth of resale.

If everyone bought one item used instead of new this year, it would save:
5.7 B lbs of CO2e = 66M trees planted
25B gallons of water = 1.25B showers
449M lbs of waste = 18,700 garbage trucks full
Fashion is one of the most pollutive industries in the world.
75 lbs of CO2e to produce the average pair of jeans
700 gallons of water to make one new T-shirt
SITE ANALYSIS
1 in 2 people are throwing their unwanted clothes straight in the trash.
64% of the 32B garments produced each year end up in landfill

Fashion production makes up 10% of humanity’s carbon emissions, dries up water sources, and pollutes rivers and streams. What’s more, 85% of all textiles go to the dump each year while washing some types of clothes sends thousands of bits of plastic into the ocean. The fashion industry has become one of the most globally pollutive industries, a direct contribution to global warming and the environmental crisis’; This is where the resale industry could swoop in like the superhero it has the potential to be. Brick and mortar resale deserve the aesthetic that draws in consumers while eluding an exciting and engaging spatial quality while eluding an elegantly pleasing aesthetic. Most importantly, using the most sustainable options possible to accompany the green initiative behind it.

AMAZON PRIME-AIR
biogeographic profiles created by naturally occurring coral reefs were extensively studied, allowing for new generative ways of thinking about and conceptualizing interior space for an Amazon Air Fulfillment Center. In Phase 01, I began by studying the topographic phenomena, the biogeographic profile formed by coral reefs, specifically barrier reefs. Coral comprises thin-plated layers of calcium salt, a byproduct of soft-bodied organisms called polyps. Hard corals form the rigid exoskeleton of these polyps. Concepts of layered growth and exoskeletons as components providing structure, protection, and physical attributes of coral, such as highly textured surfaces and coral’s complex forms, were applied in later design phases. Coral is known to provide shelter to other organisms defining a symbiotic relationship. When designing an Amazon Air Facility, it was essential to understand the complex relationship between the drones, employees, and visitors as a coinhibitory scenario. The complex contour intervention provides a unique exploration of the workspace. Environmental factors, including sun-path and site-lines, played a role in the orientation of the intervention. The contoured forms have acoustic properties to buffer sound from drone activity areas with work and public gathering spaces. A symbiotic relationship was thus developed between the drones, people, and interior structural components- the plated contours and structural steel rods. I began to think about the intervention as a shelled void that is inhabited rather than a volumetric solid defining space. The contoured and layered nature of the intervention reflects the layered compositional personality of coral.

The exploration of two design principles, hierarchy, and rhythm, began at the textile exercise, carrying over into additional progressive phases. Hierarchy is a noun defined as a system or organization in which people or groups are ranked one above the other according to status or authority, which can be seen through the differing floor planes within the space, specifically the small changes in elevation on the upper level. Rhythm is a noun that is an active, regular repeated pattern of movement or sound. In the chosen textile from the initial phases, a relationship began to form between planar objects and linear forms; this principle can be seen through the implementation of light tubes within the space that are represented in a consistent pattern-like manner. A connection can be made between the similar placement and rotation of the tables on the first floor with the angle of the highest secondary level. The decision to place these components in this way was pulled from geometries created in the large physical model from phase two. The light cuboids are arguably this design’s most essential and prominent aspect. The repetition of these large rectilinear luminaires and the partitions implied by their presence also helps communicate concepts of hierarchy and rhythm within the space. The interactions between sub-spaces indicated connections made from one-floor plane to the next, and the overall feeling of continuity and linkage throughout the space developed into an overall concept of transparent connections.
