AMAZON PRIME-AIR

Components and operative modalities enabled by the biogeograpic profile created by naturally occuring coral reefs were extensively studied, allowing for new generative ways of thinking about and conceptualizing interior space for an Amazon Air Fulfillment Center. In Phase 01 I began by studying the topographic phenomena that is the biogeographic profile formed by coral reefs, specifically barrier reefs. Coral is composed of thin plated layers of calcium salt which is a byproduct of soft bodied organisms called polyps. Hard corals form the rigid exoskeleton of these polyps. Concepts of layered growth and exoskeletons as components providing structure, protection and physical attributes of coral such as highly textured surfaces and the complex forms that are coral, were applied in later design phases. Coral is known to provide shelter to other organisms defining a symbiotic relationship. When designing an Amazon Air Facility it was important to understand the complex relationship between the drones, employees and visitors as a cohabitory scenario. The complex contour intervention provides a unique exploration into the work space. Environmental factors including sun-path, and site-lines played a role in the orientation of the intervention. The contoured forms have acoustic properties to buffer sound from drone activity areas with work space and public gathering space. A symbiotic relationship was thus developed between the drones, people and interior structural components as well- the plated contours and structural steel rods. I began to think about the intervention as a shelled void that be inhabited rather than a volumetric solid defining space. The contoured and layered nature of the intervention reflects the layered compositional nature of coral.

ACCLI-MONY

The conceptual basis for this design is rooted in the basic human desire for safety, and with safety comes to comfort. Both clients are traveling unfamiliar paths regarding the domestic environment. Sleeping, meditation, and using the toilet were the ‘typical’ behaviors that were investigated amidst Phase I. All of these behaviors can be considered very private intimate experiences that one may use to fulfill an alternate purpose to that of what would typically occur. When the deviating typology was introduced during Phase II an interesting contrast arose between the conclusions from Phase I and the implications from the typology. With a divorced couple that continues to live together this notion of intimacy and privacy vanishes. Recently divorced or separated couples tend to stay together for a few reasons: financial barriers, and children. Cohabitating with an ex can be extremely difficult and often creates an uncomfortable environment for every party involved- parents and children as well. The goal for the design of each unit is to encourage significant and efficient acclimation of the clients into their new, and what some would consider uncomfortable. Acclimation is achieved through different approaches to harmony within each unit. In ‘The Standard’, the interweaving of different accounts into a single narrative is communicated through the change in floor height. Acting as transitions from one zone to another within the environment. The positive stimulus of light is investigated to help counteract negative emotional responses from the feelings of unfamiliarity and discomfort. In ‘The Deviation’, a systematic arrangement of spatial divisions equals between spouses, allowing for optimum flexibility in occupiable spaces, not just public shared space but also private space (the office). By applying a constant congruency within the unit helps in eliminating negative emotional responses from the stimulus of simply living together.

WINK;

TAPAS & WINE BAR

The exploration of two design principals, hierarchy and rhythm, began at the textile exercise, carrying over into additional progressive phases. Hierarchy is a noun that is defined as a system or organization in which people or groups are ranked one above the other according to status or authority, which can be seen through the differing floor planes within the space specifically the small changes in elevation on the upper level. Rhythm is a noun that is an active, regular repeated pattern of movement or sound. In the chosen textile from the initial phases, a relationship began to form between planar objects and linear forms, this principle can be seen through the implementation of light tubes within the space that are represented in a consistent pattern-like manner. A connection can be made between the similar placement and rotation of the tables on the first floor with the angle of the highest secondary level. The decision to place these components in this way pulled from geometries created in the large physical model from phase two. The light cuboids are arguably the most important, and prominent aspect of this design. The repetition of these large rectilinear luminaires and the partitions implied by their presence also help in communicating concepts of hierarchy and rhythm within the space. The interactions between sub-spaces implied connections made from one-floor plane to the next, and the overall feeling of continuity and linkage throughout the space developed into an overall concept of transparent connections.
