Dr. Azita Ahmadi

certified aesthetic skin specialist

Here’s how to Summer-proof yourself with this 5 proged approach From real tips on how to protect your skin and eyes, to knowing what to eat, drink, and wear, here’s a look at how to stay cool as the season sizzles.

Pamper your skin It’s summertime and as the mercury rises, it’s time to apply generous amounts of sun block cream for effective protection from ultraviolet rays (UV), to help prevent premature aging and keeping a cool eye on hydration. Seasonal factors such as humidity and dust have an adverse impact on the skin, leaving it dry, irritable, and prone to acne breakouts and rashes.

Unfortunately, the answer isn’t to pile on the cream - this just blocks pores and gives bacteria a warm, welcoming place to fester. The right routine becomes imperative, especially if you want that just-offthe-beach glow. Wondering how to go about it? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered.

Dr. Azita Ahmadi, American Board certified aesthetic skin specialist, with a fellowship from the American Academy of antiaging, and proprietor of Serenity Aesthetic and Slimming Polyclinic, Dubai feels residents of UAE and other countries in the Middle East, need to be conscious of following a proper skin care routine, especially during the summers. “Strong sun rays, both the UV rays A and B, have a damaging effect on the skin and during summers, one must minimize sun exposure which can trigger premature aging. Prolonged exposure can cause deep sunburn as well as malignant sunspots. Wearing an effective sunblock cream is essential and in the peak of summers, I would recommend at least a SPF 50 cream which provides effective sun protection for up to two hours in a single application. The inorganic compounds in some good creams break up the UVA and UVB rays, preventing it from being absorbed by the skin:’

Here’s how you can protect your skin Dr. Ahmadi adds that following a proper skin care routine, especially during the summers, will preserve youthfulness and freshness.

Wash your face twice a day, for best results Choose a gentle, hypoallergenic cleanser or even one that is home made with natural, organic ingredients. Heat means more oil production, which can lead to acne. Choose one that works for your skin, by first identifying whether you have dry or oily or combination skin. If you have oily skin, it is prone to breakouts, try one with salicylic acid. But ensure that you don’t clean’ your face too often as this will strip it of essential oils and do more damage than good. Toner is a friend: Use a gentle toner after your wash to close those pores, once again fighting the odds of a breakout. Add a serum: With free radicals being part of our natural aging process, a serum that’s high on antioxidants can help you stem the free radicals and protect your skin. Try a water-based serum for skin that can get you hydrated without becoming oily. Moisturize: It’s easy to forget to moisturize during summer but do so often with a light potion that won’t cause breakouts but will hydrate. Don’t forget the SPF: Slather on sunscreen and reapply every two hours or so. It doesn’t matter whether you are indoors

or outdoors, what matters is you have a healthy layer of protection against the sun’s harmful rays. Choose SPF 50 as dermatologists recommend. Exfoliate: Once or twice a week. This will unclog your pores and keep you from breaking out. But don’t overdo it - exfoliating more than once or twice a week will dry skin out and cause it to crack. Similarly, don’t exfoliate if you have sunburn as this will damage the already hurting skin.

How to stay hydrated? And while experts recommend 11 cups of water for women a day and 16 for men, this doesn’t mean overdoing it; we also get water from the foods and beverages we consume. Looking for easy ways to get your 11 cups? Al Mahmoud suggests the following tips:

Hydration becomes a watchword every year as summer strikes - and for good reason. Consuming enough water is imperative to regulate body temperature, keep joints lubricated, prevent infections, deliver nutrients to cells, and keep organs functioning properly, explains a US-based Harvard University blog. Nour Al Mahmoud, clinical dietician and nutritionist at Prime Health Care Group seconded that. She adds, “Being well-hydrated also improves sleep quality, cognitive alertness, and mood:’

Begin your day with a couple of cups of water: After a long night without water, this will replenish your reserves and wake you up better than coffee ever could. Always keep a water bottle by your side: Nowhere is the adage ‘out of sight out of mind’ truer than when you are busy and don’t have a visual reminder to drink. Use an alarm for a reminder to take a sip: It’s easy to get wrapped up in the day’s events and forget to take care of yourself. Set an alarm so you don’t forget. Drink a glass of water before each meal: Often, the body signals hunger when we are thirsty - know your signals and drink a glass of water before starting your meal; it’ll keep you hydrated, and it’ll keep youfrom eating empty calories.

Try an infusion: Cucumber and mint, strawberries and other fruits make for a delicious way to up your water game. Keep an eye on the color of your urine: Dark yellow means dehydrated. Ideally, urine should be colorless. Say no to sugary drinks: Replace it with things like lemonade or buttermilk. Eat fruits high in water content: think watermelon, oranges, grapes. Set a daily goal: And see if you are up to the challenge. Signs of dehydration If you observe any of the following signs, you may be suffering from dehydration. • Feeling thirsty •

Muscle cramps

A decrease in normal volume of urine

Dark-colored urine

Dry skin

Feeling fatigue and lethargy.

Fainting

Confusion

How nutritive is your plate? craving a quick and easy snack. Melon: With a host of Vitamin B, magnesium, potassium, and fiber, not to mention water content, melons are a sweet option. Buttermilk: This cool drink with yoghurt will keep the heat at bay perfectly. It is also gut friendly, as it is rich in probiotics. Add roasted and powered cumin for extra flavor. Skin reflects inner health, so what you eat and drink- is just as important as what you put on your face.

Leafy greens: Light on the stomach and high on nutrients, these make for the perfect summer food.

Frozen sugary treats litter supermarkets and proliferate advertisements on all media - but beware, this may do more harm than good Looking for a refreshing something to keep heat at bay while cooling you down? Fahmida Jafri, dietician and head of nutrition, Thumbay Hospital, Ajman provides a list of nutrition rich summer foods to stay cool. ((Check out healthy alternatives that’ll cut out the extra calories while taking care of perfect nutrition;’ advises Jafri.

Lemon: Jazz up that glass of water with a squeeze of lemon. Rich in vitamin C, this will not only boost your immunity but also help your skin glow.

Cucumber: Rich in water content and low in calories, cucumber makes for an excelling munchy, especially if you are

Yoghurt: Packed with probiotics and cooling impact, add a little yoghurt to your meal. Mint: This herb has cooling properties. Besides, it tastes delicious.

Jafri adds, «It’s not just what you are eating, it’s also about how you are cooking it. Take advantage of the heat to change the way your meal is prepped. Choose raw, go for more salad, garnished with seeds and nuts which requires less stove work, grilling food and adding cool soups or cold dishes to the menu can help you not only save time, but also effort while making the spread more nutritious.

5 tips for healthy, summertime cooking: 1.

Plan ahead: This will save you time in the kitchen while also ensuring less waste.

2.

Keep it simple: No one wants a heavy meal on a warm summer day, a light easy-to-make one will suffice.

3.

Use your appliances: To chop or combine ingredients and give onepot or crackpot meals a try.

4.

Add salads and cold soups to your repertoire.

5.

Grill or air fry instead of trying to save on oil and heaviness.

Coconut water: Nutrient dense and filling, coconut water is a lovely replacement for a cold drink. Chamomile: A cup of chamomile tea before bed can help you get a great night’s sleep, but it has so many other benefits as well - these include digestion, relieving anxiety and even soothing inflammation.

THE 10 BEST FOODS TO HELP FIGHT STRESS

PRIORITY LISTINGS

1

HERBAL TEA HELPS PROMOTE FEELINGS OF WARMTH AND CALMNESS Sometimes it's the feeling that food or drinks induce, not their nutrients, that helps reduce stress. Drinking a warm cup of tea is one way to help make yourself feel calmer, says Sandra Meyerowitz, MPH, RD, an online nutrition coach and owner of Nutrition Works in Louisville, Kentucky. Past research has suggested that holding and sipping a warm beverage increases feelings of interpersonal “warmth” and friendliness. There's a soothing effect of sipping a warm drink, regardless of the flavor — but certain herbs, like lavender and chamomile, have been shown to have a relaxing effect on their own, Meyerowitz says. Figueroa agrees herbal tea is great for winding down but says green tea is perfectly fine when you need a small jolt of caffeine because it’s full of flavonoids, which studies show support brain health. They can help protect neurons against injury induced by neurotoxins, suppress neuroinflammation, and promote memory, learning, and cognitive function, according to previous research. According to the Mayo Clinic, a cup of brewed green tea contains between 25 and 29 milligrams (mg) of caffeine versus black brewed coffee’s 95 to 165 mg per cup. Therefore, green tea can also be a preferable choice compared with coffee if you’re looking to chill out. Flavonoids are a class of good-for-you plants and fungi also found in dark chocolate, citrus fruits, and wine. Despite green tea’s green light, Figueroa says to cut the caffeine in the afternoon to increase your chances of a good night’s rest.

2

DARK CHOCOLATE OFFERS AN ANTIOXIDANT-RICH INDULGENCE Dark chocolate in the diet can reduce stress in two ways — via its chemical impact and its emotional impact. Chocolate feels like such an indulgence that it can be a real treat to simply savor a piece of it, and that feeling alone can help to reduce stress, says Meyerowitz. Dark chocolate, which is rich in antioxidants, may also help reduce stress by lowering levels of stress hormones in the body, according to a study that followed participants who ate about 1.5 ounces (oz) per day for two weeks. But be sure to enjoy dark chocolate in moderation, advises Meyerowitz. That means you should aim to eat only one-fourth of a small dark chocolate bar (about 1 oz). Also, make sure the bar doesn’t contain an unnecessary surplus of added sugar, says Figueroa. It’s also important to choose high-quality dark chocolate, she says. You may have heard about the “bean-to-bar” movement, which focuses on high-quality ingredients and in-house responsibility for every aspect of the chocolate making process. This “farm-to-table” approach ensures the bar is packed with pure components and no hidden additives or chemicals. Look on the label for two or three ingredients only, such as cacao beans, cane sugar, and cocoa butter.

3

WHOLE GRAINS PROVIDE A MOOD-BOOSTING WAY TO CARBO-LOAD According to prior research, carbohydrates can temporarily increase levels of serotonin, a hormone that boosts mood and reduces stress. Once serotonin levels are increased, people under stress have better concentration and focus. Just make sure to choose healthy, unrefined carbohydrates, like sweet potatoes and whole grains, for better nutrition, and limit simple carbs, such as cookies, cake, and “white” foods, including white pasta and white bread. Unrefined carbs cause a quick spike and crash of blood sugar, while complex carbs contain vitamins and minerals as well as fibre, and so take longer to digest and have less of an immediate impact on blood sugar, according to Harvard School of Public Health.

PRIORITY LISTINGS Avocados Offer Stress-Busting Omega-3 Fatty Acids

4

Avocados are not only delicious mashed into guacamole or sliced and added to a salad — they also offer omega-3 fatty acids. These healthy essential acids are known to reduce stress and anxiety, boost concentration, and improve mood, according to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health. Meyerowitz emphasizes the importance of getting the right amount of omega-3 fatty acids in your diet for overall health — in addition to the benefit of helping reduce stress — which the federal government’s dietary guidelines define as 1.6 g of ALA (alpha-linolenic acid, a form of omega-3 fats) for adult men and 1.1 g of ALA for adult women. The possible superpower of avocados goes beyond their omega-3 fatty acids. They also consist of phytochemicals, fiber, and essential nutrients, according to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The survey, which was published in January 2013 in the Nutrition Journal, suggested that avocados have been linked to better diet quality and nutrient intake as well as a lower risk of metabolic syndrome, which is a group of conditions that include high blood pressure and obesity. It's important to note, however, that the survey only suggested an association, not a cause-and-effect relationship, between eating avocados and these improved health markers.

CAN BOOST YOUR HEART HEALTH WHILE 5 FISH FENDING OFF STRESS Fight stress and help prevent heart disease by adding seafood to your plate. Fatty fish in particular are a great option because they’re heart-healthy, and their omega-3s may help ease depression because the nutrients easily interact with mood-related brain molecules, according to the Harvard Health Blog. Fatty fish include tuna, halibut, salmon, herring, mackerel, sardines, and lake trout, according to the American Heart Association. Not a fish fan? There are other whole-food options, like seaweed, chia seeds, flaxseeds, walnuts, and fortified food, such as certain brands of eggs, milk, soy milk, and nut milk. You can also try omega-3 supplements in the form of fish oil, which can be found at your local drugstore or grocery store. The Harvard Health Blog noted they’re tied to a lower risk for heart disease and stroke. Figueroa says fish oil is fine if you’re not eating a balanced diet that is rich in omega-3s and includes eating fish at least twice a week. But she cautions that it’s important to check with your doctor or registered dietitian before beginning a supplement routine, so you can figure out the best brand and dosage for your health goals.

Even as she gave the baby a name that means “God’s WITH THE COVID-19 WHEN idea,” a pregnancy during the pandemic tested her. “I had just been fired from my job because the company I was working for closed down due to the coronavirus. I was also scared I FEED HIM?- MOTHERS because I knew that my pregnancy meant I was at high risk of contracting the virus and other diseases because my immune SHARE THEIR FEARS system was weaker. Although the immune systems of children and infants are resilient against contracting the coronavirus, moms who are exposed to the virus on a daily basis fear transmitting it to their new-born babies through breastfeeding. Doctors and experts agree that breast milk is the best source of nutrition for most infants. It also builds the baby’s immune system, protecting them against illness. However, the coronavirus has brought new fears for mothers and their new-borns.

SAFE TO BREASTFEED The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends that mothers with suspected or confirmed cases of COVID-19 should initiate and continue to breastfeed. In a scientific brief the WHO said breastfeeding a new-born for the first six months of life and early and uninterrupted skin-to-skin contact are recommended as two of the most important factors for an infant to thrive. MOTHERS CAN STILL BREASTFEED DURING COVID19. A recent study by American Society for Microbiology looked at whether mother-to-infant transmission of COVID-19 is possible through breastfeeding. To conduct the study, the researcher analysed 37 milk sample from 18 women diagnosed with COVID-19. The results showed that no SARS-CoV-2 was detected but the antibodies were able to neutralise the virus detected. This means that the research showed that breastfeeding mothers do not transfer the coronavirus through their milk.

maternity photoshoot. I stayed indoors and couldn’t be as excited as I should have been,” she said. Moshoeshoe said that while she continues to breastfeed, she is practicing all the safety regulations to protect her and Cebolenkosi from the virus. “We don’t just let anyone into our house and into our space because most people may not be as careful as I am and we don’t know who they interact with. I’m still very worried because the pandemic isn’t over and contracting the virus still means that I can infect my baby, especially while I am breastfeeding,” Moshoeshoe said.

Good hygiene practices like routinely disinfecting and cleaning surfaces and baby items such as bottles and breast pumps, washing hands frequently and wearing masks will limit the chances of infecting your baby or yourself, Affinity Health recommends. New moms who test positive for COVID-19, are advised to remain isolated with their babies at home for 14 days.

TIPS FOR MOTHERS During the initial vaccine trials, pregnant women were not included due to limited data on the safety of COVID-19 vaccines for expecting women. Recently, however, professionals in the American Journal of Obstetrics Gynaecology Health found that the vaccines should not pose a risk to pregnant women. “Mothers who become infected while breastfeeding produces immune antibodies in their milk to protect their baby and improve the baby’s own immune system. This means that breastfeed is the best way to protect your baby from the virus,” said the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF).

EVIDENCE MILK CAN’T TRANSMIT COVID-19

As the world adapts to the pandemic, the international NGO provided three tips for mothers breastfeeding during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Murray Hewlett, CEO of medical insurance company Affinity Health, adds that there is research evidence that shows that the virus is not found in breast milk, nor is it transmitted through breastmilk from a mother who is confirmed or suspected to have COVID-19 to her baby.

1. Continue to breastfeed while taking care with hygiene, including wearing a mask during feedings washing hands with soap before and after touching the baby, and wiping and disinfecting surfaces regularly.

2. Continue to breastfeed if you fall sick but take extra hygiene measures. “Because the coronavirus is still fairly new, guidance from experts continues to change. But, so far, it’s safe to breastfeed your baby. However, we know that COVID-19 3. In the event of falling seriously ill with COVID-19, use a “cup and spoon to feed is spread through direct, indirect, or close contact with infected people through babies with expressed breastmilk when too sick to breastfeed.” infected secretions such as saliva and respiratory droplets. We also know that you can pass the virus on before you get symptoms but are carrying it. That means that if mom has the virus, she can transmit it to her baby through close contact, and Medi-Mag | Brought to you by : Dotcom Africa (Pty) Ltd vice versa,” 38he said.

Stress reduction

Heart stimulation

You’ve probably heard of cortisol. It’s known as the “stress hormone” because your body releases it when you’re stressed. Cortisol is good in balance because

True laughter increases the amount of oxygen in your blood and picks up your heart rate, as well as stimulates your lungs and muscles. All of

responses at critical times. But too much cortisol results in a feeling of stress.

Muscle relaxation

When you laugh, your oxygen intake increases, and that stimulates body circulation, which in turn decreases cortisol levels.

Pain relief Endorphins are a type of hormone that increases our tolerance of pain when released in the body. When you have a good laugh, endorphins are released at a high rate – thus your pain tolerance is improved.

Enjoy more of what makes you laugh! • Hanging out with your "funnier" friends • Binge watching a good comedy series • Reading a new book of jokes • Going out to a comedy club • W atching funny videos of people and animals doing silly things • Sharing other things that tickle your funny bone

When you laugh, your circulation is stimulated, which relaxes your muscles. The stress that causes your muscles to tense is lowered when you chuckle. In fact, a good laugh can relieve muscles of extra stress for up to 45 minutes.

Overall happiness When you see or hear something funny enough to make you laugh, it lightens your mood. This can really help when you’re facing a challenging situation. Laughing also helps calm chronic depression and anxiety.
