Notes on the Program By Aaron Grad String Quartet No. 2 in A Minor, Op. 13 [1827] FELIX MENDELSSOHN Born February 3, 1809 in Hamburg, Germany Died November 4, 1847 in Leipzig, Germany Piano was Mendelssohn’s primary instrument, but he could comfortably handle violin and viola parts as well, and string quartets were an important part of the musical life in his family’s Berlin mansion. By the time he wrote his String Quartet in A Minor at the age of 18, he had already tested out the format in a dozen fugues for quartet (written as a 12-year-old), a fledgling String Quartet in E-flat (penned at 14) and the miraculous Octet that combined two quartets (surely the greatest music ever composed by a 16-year-old). When Mendelssohn published his first pair of quartets in 1830, he released his newer example first, which is how the earlier work in A-minor came to be known as the String Quartet No. 2. In the slow introduction that begins the first movement, a quotation from a recent song by Mendelssohn establishes this quartet’s central motive, with an upward inflection of three notes that asks the question, “Is it true?” As he explained in a letter to a friend, “You will hear it—with its own notes—in the first and last movements, and in all four movements you will hear its emotions expressed.” In the placid slow movement, episodes of austere counterpoint underscore the formative influence of Bach, whom Mendelssohn encountered through his tradition-bound composition teacher at a time when that old-fashioned wisdom was all but forgotten. The memory of another hero colors the Intermezzo third movement, with its echoes of the light-stepping Allegretto from Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony. The towering composer had died earlier in the year, and his late string quartets had just been published when Mendelssohn took up this quartet. With a return to opera-like recitative, the rapid finale dissipates into a rehashing of the quartet’s original introduction.
