Odeya Nini | ODE “Nini gave a (performance) of the sheer power of her vocal prowess, reaching notes deep as the earth and reaching twinkling harmonics meant for dog’s ears.” – Mark Swed, LA Times
Album Notes Armed only with her incomparable voice, Los Angeles-based vocalist/ composer Odeya Nini has crafted ODE, a sonic adventure of visceral impact. ODE vividly displays her startling range, commanding technique, and keen ear for layered vocal textures. The six-track album will be available digitally and on vinyl LP from Populist Records. ODE was recorded and produced by Lewis Pesacov at Barefoot Studios in Los Angeles. All sounds on ODE come from Odeya Nini’s voice, except for a crystal bowl on Submerge and an electronic drone on See Ma Tou. Aside from those two tracks, signal processing is minimal. Writes Nini, “The pieces on ODE are both compositions and improvisations. They have road maps and guidelines, but what happens in each performance is led by the moment’s inspiration. As I sound, I seek to stay in a state of discovery, and these pieces are essentially real time excavations in sound and texture, a deep dive into their theme.” Ultimately, her mission is to “reclaim the voice as a conduit to higher states of consciousness.”ODE is an ideal gateway to the work of this singular artist.

At the locus of her interests are performance practices, gesture, textural harmony, tonal animation, and the illumination of minute sounds, in works spanning chamber music to vocal pieces and collages of musique concrète. Her solo vocal work extends the dimension and expression of the voice and body, creating a sonic and physical panorama of silence to noise and tenderness to grandeur. Odeya's work has been presented at venues and festivals across the US and internationally, such as the LA Philharmonic, Merkin Concert Hall, Resonant Bodies Festival, The Broad Museum, and MONA from Los Angeles to Tel Aviv, Australia, Mongolia, Madagascar and Vietnam. She is a member of the Los Angeles-based ensemble Wild Up, and has also presented work through The Industry. She leads vocal sound baths, workshops and retreats exploring the transformative and healing qualities of embodying the voice.
